Chapter 4
An hour later…
Steve and Catherine walked to a restaurant, ordered their food, and looked for a place to sit while they waited for their food. It was a little awkward between the two of them. Steve did not want to ruin the moment by bringing up the boy, but it was killing him inside.
"Cath…"
Catherine looked up from her menu.
"Sailor…"
"There is something that has been eating me up for the past two days and I can't wait any longer to ask you…"
"You're starting to scare me, sailor."
"No, it's nothing bad… it's just… I have a question and I don't mean to be direct."
"Ask away…"
"Do you have a kid? I'm sorry if I offend you or anything, I don't mean to."
Catherine's brain started to go into overload. She has thought about this moment for six years, but never thought she would have to tell Steve, like this, sitting right across from her, at a resort she booked for their son. Steve could see that she was starting to compartmentalize the situation.
"Don't feel obligated to answer! You don't have to answer the question right now…"
"Steve… no… I … we…"
Tears started to come out.
"I am so sorry, Steve."
More tears started to fall from her eyes. Steve knew what this meant. Steve put one hand on her shoulder and reached the other to hold her hand. He moved her head up and they looked into each other's eyes.
"You have nothing to be sorry for, okay? When the time is right, you can tell me what happened, but right now, I don't care, I just want you to know that, here and now, I am happy we are together, talking. We can discuss our child after, okay?"
"Steve… We have a son."
Catherine started to break down more. Steve tried to comfort her.
"Hey, it's okay. You can tell me all about him after. For right now, I want you to know I am not going anywhere."
Steve kissed her hand.
"I still love you, Cath, I hope you know that."
"I love you too."
The waiter brought the food
Catherine showed Steve pictures of when Steven was a baby up until now. Steve could see the resemblance between himself and Steven. Steve felt sorry for what had happened and explained what happened these past 3 years.
"Where did we go wrong Cath?"
"Steve…"
"You were my forever love and I lost you."
"I guess Steven is our connection that brought us back together."
They finished eating and decided to go to Catherine's room. Steve really wanted to be with Catherine and felt everything inside of him turn numb. He grabbed Catherine and kissed her passionately. Catherine missed his touch so much that she immediately wrapped her legs around his waist. Steve carried her to the bed and took off his shorts. He climbed over Catherine and took off her bikini. He started to kiss his way down her body until he reached her swim bottom. She slowly pulled it down and Steve pulled his off. Steve lowered his body and went inside her. Their intertwined bodies became one.
"I missed this so much Cath."
"Keep it up, sailor!"
After an hour, they both were on the bed gasping for air.
"That was amazing."
"Not so bad yourself, sailor."
They both got up, went to take a shower, changed back into their swim clothes, then headed back to the pools.
"It's getting late, I have to go pick up Steven."
"If you're ready…"
Steve took a deep breath.
"Can I come with you? I wanna meet our son."
"Of course, you can come… it's just… I'm not sure how I am feeling about this yet."
"I trust you and we can wait to tell him."
They walked to aunty's beach house and Steven was playing with toys.
"Mommy, who's that man?"
Catherine and Steve exchanged looks.
"He's mommy's closest friend that I haven't seen in many years."
Steve bent down and kneeled in front of Steven.
"Hey, buddy, what's your name?"
"My name is Steven."
"Nice to meet you Steven, my name is also Steve."
"Woah, that is so cool."
"Yes, it is buddy."
Steven turned to Catherine and wrapped his arms around Catherine's legs.
"Mommy, mommy, I am hungry."
Catherine picked him up and carried him as the trio walked outside the house.
"Okay, okay, we can go get dinner and then play at the beach for a little before we get ready for bed."
"Yayyy mommy is the best."
"Steve, would you like to join us for dinner?"
"I would love to."
The whole time during dinner Steve and Catherine were texting each other while making small talk in person. They were afraid that Steven would remember something they were saying to each other.
Catherine texted Steve: "Maybe we can tell Steven tonight."
Steve replied: "Sounds good to me, where do you want to go and tell him?"
Catherine: "After dinner."
Steve: "I'll go back and bring some supplies."
Catherine: "Mmm supplies… what supplies would we need?"
Steve: "Flashflight, net, and bucket. I want to show him how to catch fish"
Catherine: "Aww that's cute, it'll be a nice surprise for him."
Steve: "I will meet you guys at the beach."
Catherine: "I brought some toys to keep him occupied while we wait."
Steve: "Prepared as always, lieutenant."
Catherine: "You know it."
After dinner Steve went back to get some fishing supplies while Catherine and Steven walked down to the beach. Steven was so excited he took off his slippers and ran straight to the water edge.
Catherine shouted, "slow down buddy!"
Catherine eventually caught up to him and sat down on one of the chairs.
"Mommy, mommy, can I play with my beach toys?"
"Of course, buddy!"
She watched Steven play in the sand, he looked so happy. She started to think about her life and how Steven's life would have been so different and better if only Steve knew about him from the beginning. Some tears began to fall but she quickly wiped them away and smiled at her son.
"Hey, buddy, don't get too dirty please."
"Why notttttt?"
"I know you haven't showered yet, but don't get too much sand in your hair, okay?"
"But I can wash it in the water."
Steven ran to the shore and scoped some water with his hands and poured it on his head.
"See mommy, all clean."
"We are going to take a nice long bath tonight to wash everything off."
"Yayyy, bath time tonight."
Suddenly Catherine heard someone call her name. It didn't sound like Steve so she was confused until she turned around. She was not expecting to see the man standing several feet away from her.
Who is the mystery man?
