"Kagura-chan! Lunch is ready!" Megane yelled out from the dining table.
He didn't have to yell. I can clearly smell the egg on rice.
"I'll eat later!" I yelled back.
"Eh? Kagura-chan, are you sure you're not sick?" I heard Megane's voice right outside of my closet.
"Don't even think of opening that shoji door, Pachi-boy. I'm changing." I threatened before he could disrupt my gameplay.
"Oh." He paused.
I could imagine his face turning bright red. Such a cherry boy.
"Shoo. Shoo." I told him off.
After I heard his footsteps fade, I resumed the game on my phone. I was testing out the beta version of Love Line by the same maker of the Owee. I've finally managed to reach Hidaka's last chapter after a week. I'm this close to reaching his 'Good End', I refuse to let anyone get in my way.
I looked at Hidaka's youthful face as he leaned on the railings at the stern of his grandfather's boat. I found it strange to see him in a formal suit rather than his usual attire, a two-layered, blue kimono. Right now, he seemed more mature than the first time I met him in the game—when I almost mistook him for Sadist—if not for his eyes that were as blue as the ocean in the background.
KAGURA
「Is it just me? Or out of all the guests in his grandfather's birthday party, his eyes have landed on me?」
「I moved through the guests and made my way towards his side.」
HONGOU HIDAKA
「Kagura-chan.」
KAGURA
「I looked into his deep blue eyes.」
HONGOU HIDAKA
「I've been thinking of you since the first time I met you.」
KAGURA
「…」
I held my breath in anticipation.
HONGOU HIDAKA
「Would you like to spend the rest of your life with me?」
"Yes! Yes! Did you even have to ask?" I talked with the boy on the other side of the screen as if he could hear me.
I clicked on the screen for the next scene and the background dimmed. Then, three options popped up on my cell phone screen.
「Yell and hug him.」
「Slap him with a piece of bread for being rude.」
「Walk away with disinterest.」
The choice was obvious so I quickly pressed the first option.
KAGURA
「YES! YES! Of course, I agree.」
「I ran to close the distance between us with a hug…」
Then, the screen went dark and only my dialogue box could be seen.
KAGURA
「…」
HONGOU HIDAKA
「…」
I watched an image appear on the screen. Hidaka-kun was dangling at the edge of the boat. His fingers were slipping as I watched helplessly by his side.
"How the hell did I manage to throw him overboard with a hug? This isn't real life! Look at those flimsy 2D arms? Can't even harm a fly with those." I argued.
KAGURA
「Hidaka-kun! Hidaka-kun!」
HONGOU HIDAKA
「Kagura-chan, help me!」
Once again, the background dimmed and three buttons popped up on the screen.
「Get help.」
「Pull him up yourself.」
「Leave him be.」
"Should I choose the first or second option? It might be too late if I leave and get help. But I also don't think I have enough strength to pull him up. I only managed to push him down by accident." I scratched my head.
After thinking it through for a few more seconds, I clicked on the first option. However, the screen faded to black and red liquid oozed down the screen.
「YOU ARE TOO LATE!」
「GAME OVER」
I watched the 'GAME OVER' blink in a large red font a few times, still not believing all of my effort had gone down the drain. Then, the credits rolled down.
"NOOOOO! That can't be it!" I yelled out in frustration as reality hit me when I heard the ending song play.
I want you for a lifetime.
So, if you're gonna think twice, baby.
I don't want to know, baby.
I don't want to know.
"Hidaka-kun! Is that you speaking to me from the dead?" I cried out.
Everything is just right.
But if you're gonna think twice baby.
I don't want to know, baby.
I don't want to know.
"But-but I want to knoooow! My happy ending!" I yelled, shaking not only the Yorozuya, but likely the whole world as I voiced my anguish.
Among the evacuees of the untimely 'earthquake' were the Shinsengumi officers desperately fleeing from their headquarters as all of their belongings came crashing to the ground.
Although, a certain sandy-haired officer continued to rest peacefully in his futon through the commotion. Even going as far as counting the number of Hijikatas he had slain to put him to sleep.
"Hijikata #238. "Hijikata #239-"
"Sougo!"
His dream was disturbed by the same man he had repeatedly killed.
If only I could kill the real one.
He reluctantly pulled off his signature red eye mask to glare at the man.
"Do you need something, Hiji-baka?" Sougo asked grumpily, not bothering to pay attention to the disaster zone that his room had become.
"How can you still be sleeping in the middle of this earthquake?" Hijikata pulled Sougo out of his futon.
"Eh? I thought that was just the sound of your stomach from eating all that expired mayo?" Sougo blurted out.
Hijikata recalled his late night visits to the toilet and paused to ask, "how did you know about that?"
Sougo whistled, trying to appear as innocent as he could in his favourite 'S' pajamas. "Ne, Hijikata-san. Weren't you the one who said we should evacuate?"
Sougo casually slipped through the shoji door and held the doors shut, waiting for Hijikata to meet his demise. He grinned while imagining his Vice Commander's death being labeled as an accident. He was such a genius.
Hijikata jiggled the door handle, but the door was shut tight. He had an ominous feeling. "Sougo! Sougo! Open this damn door!"
Upon using all his strength, he felt the door slowly give in and was finally able to pull them apart. To his shock, his eyes were blinded by a bright white flash of light. When the light disappeared, Sougo was nowhere to be found. On the ground, lay his signature eye mask.
Hijikata was puzzled at the disappearance of the mischievous kid. "Sougo?"
Which trick is this kid playing now?
A/N: Anyone recognize the song without googling it? The original song "Don't Think Twice" is by Utada Hikaru (in Kingdom Hearts 3) but the song that plays here is a cover by Lizz Robinett. I cried the first time I heard it. Her high notes are too beautiful.
