The Clothes Make the Pros
"And then I shattered the boulder in midair, firing the ball even further! It went over eight hundred meters!" Toph regaled her parents in her first day of class that very night. "The we did a seated toe touch, which was stupid easy, of course."
"Of course." Her mother said indulgently. Not that Toph cared. She was having fun at this school for heros, even though this Aizawa-Sensei sounded like quite the intimidating fellow.
"Also, I need to stay at school late on Wednesdays now."
"What? You didn't get into trouble, did you?" Lao looked up from his newspaper.
"No, but Mr. Aizawa wants to take extra time to train me. 'Covering my weaknesses, he said."
Lao hummed. "Sounds like a rational man, your teacher."
"That's all he ever says, sometimes. Rational this, irrational that." Toph said.
"I see. Still, I'm glad they're taking care of you." Lao listened as he looked through the rest of the mail. "Ah! Toph, there's a U.A. letter here."
"Oooh, it's probably the costume confirmation!"
Lao opened it and read aloud. "Ms. Toph Beifong, you costume is ready for use and will be usable during your training to join the next generation of heroes. Improvements may be implemented over time based on your needs as a future pro hero. If any improvements are to be made, please contact the Support Department. Attached is the photo detailing the final product, which is currently on campus and will remain so unless you are given direct permission otherwise. Regards, U.A. Academy."
"Well?" Toph could hardly wait. "Does it look good?"
Poppy strode over to look as he pulled out the photo.
"It's certainly…simplistic." her father commented.
Toph, Momo, and her mother had gone over possible designs for their hero costumes in the last week; before beginning of term. Mrs. Beifong went beat red at Momo's design and suggested some adjustments. As for Toph, Momo and Poppy both brainstormed different designs while Toph just wanted something functional.
"It's definitely what you were going for sweetie, but are you sure that's what you want?"
Toph grinned. "Oh yeah."
xXx
"I wonder where Aizawa-Sensei is, ribbit." A hunched girl asked.
"Beats me," another girl responded. "Maybe we have someone else today?"
Toph didn't know either. The whole morning was spent on regular classes, from English, the Art & History, to Math. After getting some food, they were all in homeroom. And in all that time, Toph hadn't felt their teacher anywhere on campus.
Suddenly, he felt a large weight flit into existence outside the door.
"I…AM…HERE!"
The large man burst into the room. "COMING INTO THE ROOM LIKE A NORMAL PERSON!"
"Oh wow, it's All Might!" Midoriya exclaimed.
"Wow! So, he really is teaching here!"
"So cool!"
"Is that his Silver Age Costume, ribbit?"
Toph didn't know what frog-girl meant by that, but the power in every step he took was unmistakable. The Number One Hero was a living force of nature, seeming to activate his quirk constantly.
'So, it was you, huh.'
"AH-HAHAHAHAAA! HELLO STUDENTS! TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS, YES! I WILL BE RUNNING YOUR PRATICAL HEROICS CLASS TODAY! AND THE ADGENDA TODAY IS…" he held something up. A card? "…BATTLE TRAINING!"
"FINALLY!" Toph thought with glee. Time to see how she stacks up with the rest of her class.
"AND THE KEY TO BEING A WELL-KNOW HERO IIIIIIIS…LOOKING GOOD!" he clicked a remote, revealing 20 cases. "YOU ALL WILL BE USING YOUR HERO COSTUMES FOR THIS EXERCISE! THIS WILL SERVE AS A DECENT TEST DRIVE FOR YOU KIDS. MEET ME AT GROUND BETA IN 30 MINUTES!"
"YES, SENSEI!"
xXx
Toshinori stood inside Ground Beta, awaiting his students. As he watched them approach, he called to them "THEY SAY THE CLOTHES MAKE THE PROS, AND YOU ALL ARE THE PROOF! I NAME YOU…HEROES IN TRAINING!"
For most students, as All Might saw, they had gone for a classic skintight suit of varying degrees of color and style. Others went for a bulkier design, preferring a protective suit of armor. Some had gone for a completely unorthodox style, for better or for worse, one costume being made for an invisible girl as it was just a pair of boots and gloves. Another appeared to be a purple boy in a diaper? All in all, every costume was unique in its own right; though somewhat destined to change over time with new techniques and abilities as the wearer grows.
Toph stepped into the sunlight in her brand-new hero costume. It felt perfect. This was possibly the best thing she ever wore! The fabric was breathable, and was easily washed for when it got dirty (which was bound to happen). Her main design consisted of a beige shoulderless top, revealing her small, but built arms with range of motion in mind. She also had black clay bracers on her forearms. The bracers were Momo's idea, the formula made by her: easy to form, reform, and harden for when she needed them for protection, capture, or offense. She also wore dark green, slightly baggy pants with a wide studded belt, that cut off halfway down her shins, which also had the same clay bracers. While she preferred to be barefoot at all times, as she was now, the bracers could be formed around her feet if needed. She wore her usual green head piece with her done, but slightly wilder hair; letting her bangs partially hide her gray eyes. Was it simple? Yes. Did it need anything else? Not in a million years.
"Hey, Beifong! I love your look!" A cheery girl said.
"Thanks, uhh…"
"Ashido, but Mina's fine."
"Mina. I'd return the compliment, but I have no idea what you look like."
Mina laughed a bit, then covered her mouth. "Sorry, I didn't mean to-"
"It's ok" Toph laughed. "I joke about it all the time. You can call Toph too, by the way."
"Really! Thanks, Toph!" From what Toph could tell, Mina had odd holes in her shoes. 'Must be part of her quirk.' She remembered how she dissolved the ground and slid around during the Quirk Assessment Test.
"Oh, hey Midoriya!"
"H-h-hi Ash-Ashido." he stuttered back. 'What's with him?' Toph wondered. Little did she know that many of the girls' costumes were rated PG-13 in places. The only really exposed parts on Toph were her arms and shoulders, and she didn't exactly have Yaomomo-level back pain, but she had a good idea of what the Sugar Queen's costume design was like (which made her laugh to no end that day). Her mom suggested a long cape to use for cover and modesty. Though Momo wore it, it was still rather revealing. The short pervert was also audibly drooling, so she made a mental note to kick his ass again after class. The only one she knew wasn't quite right was the buck-naked girl, sans boots. 'No one else is reacting, so maybe they know something I don't. I'll ask her later.'
"SHALL WE GET STARTED, YOU BUNCHA NEWBIES?" All Might announced.
"Sir!" Iida raised his hand. 'His armor feels heavy. Isn't speed his thing? Or are those boosting mechanisms on his calves?' "This appears to be the same area as the entrance exam, will we be conducting outdoor battle trials again?"
"NOT QUITE! THOUGH THE MORE TELEVISED ACTS OF HEROISM AND CRIME-FIGHTING ARE OUT IN THE OPEN, STATISTICALLY, MORE VILLIANS STICK TO THE INDOORS TO CONDUCT WRONGDOING. THINK OF IT: HOME ROBBERIES, BACKROOM DEALS, HUMAN TRAFFICING TO NAME A FEW. THEREFORE, WE WILL CONDUCT BATTLE TRIALS IN THE BUILDING DOWN THE ROAD! ADDITIONALLY, THIS TIME YOU WILL BE FACING OFF IN 2V2 BATTLES! FIGHTING HUMAN BEING IS, OF COURSE, FAR HARDER THAN SMASHING ROBOTS."
Questions started to pop up at random.
"How will the teams be split up?"
"Can we pummel our opponents into unconsciousness?"
"Isn't this a little advanced?"
"What determines victory?"
"Can we rate the girls' costumes?"
"Can we just restrain the other team?"
"Doesn't my cape sparkle glamorously?"
"HOLD ON NOW, STUDENTS; ONE AT A TIME!" He cleared his throat. "IN ORDER: WE'LL GET TO THAT, HEAVENS NO, PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IS THE GREATEST TEACHER THERE IS, WE'LL GET TO THAT, NO, YES, ABSOLUTELY!"
He dug something out of his pocket. "LISTEN UP!" 'Is he reading from something?' "THE SCENARIO IS SIMPLE: VILLAINS HAVE PLACED A NUCLEAR WEAPON WITHIN A MULTIBLE STORY BUILDING! THERE ARE TWO VILLAINS, WHO HAVE 15 MINUTES TO DEFEND THE WEAPON OR CAPTURE THE HERO TEAM. THE VILLAINS ALSO HAVE 5 MINUTES TO PREPARE. THE HEROES, HOWEVER, MUST INFILTRATE THE BUILDING AND EITHER CAPTURE THE VILLAINS OR RECOVER THE WEAPON BY TOUCHING IT. THE HEROES ALSO LOSE IF THEY CAN DO NEITHER BEFORE TIME RUNS OUT."
"Excuse me, kero," Asui asked. "Doesn't that place the Villains at a distinct advantage?"
"AS A MATTER OF FACT, YES YOUNG ASUI! SUCH IS THE WAY OF HEROISM, I'M AFRAID. SINCE THE VILLAINS ARE THE INSTIGATORS OF WRONGDOING, THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OF PREMEDITATION AND PLANNING. IT IS UP TO THE HERO TO BE ABLE TO ANALYZE THE SITUATION, AND REACT QUICKLY!"
Toph hummed. 'He may be obviously new as a teacher, but he's definitely got the practical experience to back himself up.'
"NOW, TO ANSWER YOUR PREVIOUS QUESTION, WE WILL BE DRAWING LOTS TO DETERMINE TEAMS!"
"Is that really the best way to do it?" Iida asked.
"Think about it," Midoriya answered. "sometimes heroes have to team up on the fly to take down a villain or to save people, whoever that hero is."
"I see. I apologize for questioning your methods!"
"NO SWEAT, NOW LET'S GO!"
Everyone grabbed a colored ball with a letter from All Might's box. There were two identical pairs for each team, signaling who was partners with who.
"Yeah, alright! Let's win this, Uraraka!" A burly red-headed boy yelled. "Ye-yeah!" She had been hoping for Deku, but she decided this was alright.
"Let's win, Tokoyami-chan." Asui croaked. Tokoyami regarded her with a stoic nod.
"Let's do our best, Sero-chan, to achieve our shared dream of becoming heroes!" Iida went on as he chopped the air. "Uh, yeah! Definitely!" Sero replied. He wasn't too sure about the armored guy, but he could roll with it.
"Hi! Bakugo, right?" Hagakure bounced over to the blond. "Let's do our best ok?"
"Tsk." was his response. He didn't need an extra to win. Even if she was invisible. And naked. He turned to hide his blush. 'What the fuck?'
'Yeeeeessssssss…" thought Mineta as he looked at Yaoyorozu's boo…er…ball. 'Oh, wonderful' she internally groaned.
"Hey, Yaomomo."
'Oh, thank goodness.' Toph appeared at her side. "Which ball do I have?"
"You're in Team A."
"Got it, thanks-"
"Hey back off!" Mineta put himself in front of Momo. "She's my partner."
Toph leaned down at him (she never got to do that) and smiled sweetly. "If you touch my best friend, I'll rip your arms off and beat you with them. Got it?" Mineta gulped. "Got it." He said small-ly.
"Good." She straightened up. "Now I gotta find the other 'A'."
"B-Beifong-san?"
"Oh, hi Midoriya! Didn't see you there!" Maybe he'll get it this time.
"Oh, sorry! I didn't mean to-oh. Uh…"
"Relax, muttermouth. What's up?"
"Oh! We're on Team A!"
"Ah, ok. You ready to win?"
"Yeah, I guess, not sure…" Midoriya started to ramble. "It will depend on you we're up against and how we can utilize our quirks and their quirks and howwecancounterthemeffiectivelyand-ouch!"
"Stop stop stop." Toph jabbed his forehead. "Don't worry, we got this. You're going to be the greatest hero, right?"
"R-right!"
"Then we got nothing to worry about!" She grinned. 'This is going to be fun.'
xXx
"HAS EVERYONE SUBMITTED THEIR PARTNERS? GOOD! HERE ARE THE MATCH-UPS!"
The holo-display showed the match-up and the order of the matches. It also listed them verbally.
Beifong/Midoriya vs Bakugo/Hagakure
Uraraka/Kirishima vs Iida/Sero
Momo/Mineta vs Ojiro/Sato
Tokoyami/Asui vs Todoroki/Jirou
Mina/Aoyama vs Shoji/Kaminari
Toph felt Midoriya's heart stop as his legs trembled. "Hey!" She elbowed him. "Get a grip! What's wrong?"
"It's him."
She sensed "him" glaring right at her partner. 'Ok, this is getting ridiculous.'
"You two have history?"
"Yeah, we-we know each other from middle school."
She "looked" at Bakugo. He was completely focused on Midoriya, ignoring his partner.
"Glare back."
"Wh-what?"
"You heard me. We're about to fight, and he's already winning. Show him you're ready to face him. Unless you're not."
Midoriya seemed to relax a bit. 'She right. I'm not the same as I was back then.' He squared his feet, and glared right back at him.
Bakugo's eyes widened. 'That bastard. So, you think you're better than me, huh?' He growled as he glared harder. Deku didn't falter. 'That fucking bitch, putting ideas in his head.'
"Oi. See-through girl."
"Excuse me?" Toru was getting annoyed. He had ignored her completely till now.
"We're gonna win, no doubt about it." He said with his head turned towards the other team. "But I'm taking Deku. I'm not going to argue about it. You defend the weapon. Surely you can sneak up on a blind girl, right?"
"I guess? What if one gets past you? What do I do?"
"Do what you want, Deku's mine. You wouldn't understand."
Hagakure gave him a look (not that anyone could tell). 'Boys'.
xXx
"Here are your ear pieces and capture tape. Remember, for the role of the villains, you must think like a villain. Understand? If you take things too far, I'll step in." Bakugo nodded while Hagakure gave a thumbs up. The entered the building, starting their 5 minutes of prep time while the Hero Team waited outside.
Toph was crouched with her hand on the ground. "Alright, Midoriya. I've already got a good feel of the building. They're moving the bomb from the first floor, probably to a higher floor to make it harder to get. What do you thi-are you sweating through your costume or something?"
As a matter of fact, he was. Despite his small feat of bravado earlier, he was terrified at the idea of going head to head the blond bomber. "Look," Toph got his attention. "If you want, I can hold him off while you get the weapon."
He shook his head. "No," Midoriya said with certainty. "I need to do this. Besides, Kacchan will want to go straight for me. And based on what I know about your quirk, you're the best suited to both fight Hagakure and finding the bomb. We're going to let him get me while you get the weapon."
"If I know where it is, couldn't we just rush the weapon?"
"Bad idea. Then they'll both know exactly where we are and where we're going. We'd have to fight both of them at once. Not only is it risky, but we risk damaging the weapon."
Toph shifted, putting her hand on her hip. "Ok, fine. But there's one thing I don't get."
"What's that?"
"Why I am best to fight Hagakure?"
Midoriya smacked his head. 'How did I not realize?'
"Because she's invisible."
…
…
"Like…to you? To everyone else?"
"Yeah."
…
…
"Shut up, no she's not."
"Yeah, she is!"
…
…
"Crap, that must be weird."
"A bit."
"That's why she's naked?"
"N-none of us were sure, b-but yeah."
"Huh."
xXx
"Can you see the ear piece?"
"Just barely, shouldn't matter. Now shut it, I'm focusing."
"Ok, ok." The two had 2 more minutes to prepare. They had set up on the 5th floor. The way Bakugo figured, putting the bomb on the top floor would be too obvious. Blind bitch could just scale the wall if she wanted. Might as well make it hard no matter where they entered.
He stole a glance over to See-through girl. 'What is she doing?'
Hagakure was removing her gloves and boots, achieving maximum invisiblity.
'Oh, that's kinda smart. I guess. Wait, now she's…DAMMIT! FOCUS!'
xXx
"Time's up! Heroes, infiltrate the building, your time starts now!"
Midoriya dashed in while Toph ran to the side of the building and smashed her hand into the wall.
"Ok, Midoriya." She reported through the ear piece. "The weapons on the 5th floor on the eastern side of the building, with not-so-invisible girl guarding it. Sparky #2's patrolling the 2nd floor, northern side. Looks like you were right about him coming after us."
Midoriya didn't respond, as was the plan, and jumped up the stairs on the southern side. He crept through the corridors, receiving updates on Bakugo's location.
"Wait, stop." He stopped in his tracks, just ahead of a corner. "He's there, on the left corner."
He nodded to no one and pulled off his hood. Without a sound, he threw it ahead of him.
BOOOOM
Just as they thought. Bakugo had tried a sneak attack at the first sight of Midoriya's costume, which failed as it was just his hood. Bakugo whirled around to receive a sucker punch.
SMACK
Deku then sprinted for the western side. 'Gotta get him downstairs.'
"DEKUUUUUUUUU!"
Blasty's scream of fury vibrated the very foundation of the building. 'That guy needs therapy, seriously.'
Toph removed her hand. 'Muttermouth's got this for now, time for part two.'
She ran for the building opposite the eastern side and started climbing, creating cracks everywhere she grabbed to create hand holds.
'Ok,' she tried not to focus on how high she was. 'Here goes nothing.'
She mentally prepared herself to jump.
'Wait. Shit! She moved!' Hagakure was moving the weapon around, making it harder to figure out the best launching point into the building.
'Damn it! I'm not exactly Spiderman, here!' While she had gained some strength in her training regimen, scaling the side of the building was still tough.
xXx
"YOU FUCKING BASTARD! YOU REALLY THINK YOU CAN SUCKER PUNCH ME AND LIVE TO TELL ABOUT IT? HUH, DEKU?" Not only had Bakugo been outsmarted, but the damn nerd actually managed to hit him!
And he felt it!
'That bastard. That fucking bastard. And he's still holding back!'
He caught sight of green down the hall to his right. He was hiding in the room, which was right through this wall.
Rubbing his hands to work up a sweat, he demolished the wall separating him from his target.
BOOOOOOOM
"You're not getting away, Deku." The bastard was there, looking scared as ever. "You never changed, huh? You're even quaking in your boots, you Deku!"
It was true. Midoriya had never been this scared of Kacchan before. But he wasn't backing down, not today.
"No tricks this time," He said as he rolled his shoulder. "no tricks, no cowardness. Fight me Deku! Show me that power you've been hiding! WHAT YOU'VE BEEN HIDING FOR ALL THESE YEARS! WHY YOU'VE BEEN LOOKING DOWN ON ME ALL THESE YEARS! COME AT ME!"
'Wait," Midoriya thought. 'he thinks I've been hiding my quirk? That I've lied to him?'
'That I'm…looking down on him?'
…
"You…you idiot."
…
'HUH?'
xXx
Hagakure was waiting out the clock, almost hoping one of the hero team would show up to give something to do.
'This is exactly why I hate group projects. Can't ever get everyone on the same page!'
She tried to listen to the rest of the building. Bakugo was in combat if the sounds of explosions were any indication, which means he has at least one hero to fight.
'So, where's the other?'
She had even moved the weapon around out of boredom, trying to do anything useful. 'Sooner or later someone's got to-"
crrrrrAAAAASSHSHSH
Her answer came crashing through the now demolished wall, which she just barely dodged. There was no mistake. It was the blind girl, who had somehow crashed through a wall that was connected to the outside.
5 stories up!
She crouched down low, holding her capture tape. She was about the strike…
"So, are you…really invisible?" the girl panted.
The question stopped her in her tracks. She stayed silent. 'Can she see me?'
"I know you're there" she said dryly as she pointed right at her. She put her other hand on her knee, thoroughly out of breath from climbing so much.
'That's a first.' She'd never been so blatantly pointed like this.
"How'd you know?" she answered.
"I can sense…vibrations. I knew where you were…the entire time. Nice birthday suit, by the way."
Embarrassment. 'Also a first.'
"8 minutes remaining!"
She refocused. "Doesn't matter if you can see me or not, I'm not helpless."
"What a coincidence, neither am I."
With that, she took a fighting stance and destroyed the ground under the invisible girl.
"WAAAAAAAAAHH!"
She just barely dodged, scrambling away from the new hole in the floor.
Toph swore. 'I'm trying not to do too much damage, which limits what I can do here.'
She collapsed more floor, which Hagakure dodged again. The rest of the floor was starting to groan. 'If I keep this up, I'll collapse myself down too, along with the weapon. Time for plan B.'
See shot her hands forward, shooting the now soft clay from her arms.
"Yipe!"
Hagakure was now pinned, the improvised clay handcuffs holding her hands above her on the wall.
xXx
All Might had turned off the 5th floor monitor as fast as he could, which wasn't that fast, as he wasn't familiar with the equipment yet. The class was silent; with most of the guys beat red. In the fight, debris had been kicked everywhere by Toph's previous attacks, which covered everything in dust.
Everything.
"All Might-Sensei," Momo said as she created a blanket "please give this to Hagakure on your way there."
"Of course, thank you young Yaoyorozu." With that, All Might declared Hagakure captured and out of the fight.
"QUICK!" Mineta jumped for the remote, frothing at the mouth. "TURN IT BACK ON!"
It took Iida, Yaoyorozu, and Kirishima to hold him away from the remote as Asui held it away with her frog tongue.
All Might just stared at the rabid boy, jotting a note on his notebook.
xXx
A minute earlier…
"WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?" Bakugo demanded.
"You're an idiot." Midoriya repeated. "I've never looked down on you! Even with all the pain you've caused! You're incredibly talented and driven!"
He took a firmer fighting stance, glaring with resolve. "That's why I want to beat you! BECAUSE YOU'RE AMAZING!"
"YOU'LL NEVER GET TO MY LEVEL DEKU! GIVE UP WHILE YOU STILL HAVE A FACE!"
"WHY DON'T YOU PROVE IT THEN!?"
…
That did it.
"RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
"DELEWAAAAAAAAAARE…"
Bakugo lunged at his former victim, his right hand searing, while Midoriya stood firm with his fingers ready to flick.
"THAT'S ENOUGH!" a new voice boomed.
All Might appeared between them, taking both attacks with one hand each.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
BWWWWOOOOOOOOOOSH
The windows of the second floor shattered from the force with the rest of the room upheaved. The dust settled, revealing the three.
The soot from the explosion covered a bit of All Might's uniform, but he was unfazed by the accidental attacks. "Cool your jets, you two. Young Beifong recovered the weapon, it's over."
Midoriya promptly plopped on the ground, clutching his hand, while Bakugo stood wordlessly. He looked at All Might's left hand, which he used to block Deku's attack, as he rubbed it a bit.
'No way.' He looked to All Might's right. It was covered in soot, but wasn't hurt at all.
'No fucking way.' He recalled the quirk test, how the nerd beat his softball score with his finger.
His breathing got faster as Midoriya left to check on his teammate.
He remembered how the other extras claimed he destroyed the damn Zero-pointer.
Even faster.
'Does this mean…that in a straight fight…" he started to hyperventilate 'I…would have LOST?'
A strong hand gripped his shoulder gently.
"Young man. This may be hard to come to terms with, but there's no shame in defeat. Victory is rewarding, but it's our failures where we find ways to better ourselves. Don't fool yourself into thinking you can't get even stronger." All Might spoke with care. The bigger the pride, the more it hurts when broken.
Bakugo's breathing slowed a bit. He looked up at the number one hero. Toshinori looked back kindly.
"Come, let's collect your classmates."
xXx
"Thanks, Sensei. I hope the class didn't see too much." Hagakure said gratefully from her blanket.
"Not at all, young lady, not at all."
Toph was highly sheepish. "Sorry about that. I didn't think the dust would-"
"Don't worry about it, Toph-san. You didn't know. Can we go back to the observation room now?"
"Sorry, young Hagakure, but I must insist on sending you to Recovery Girl. You hit your back against the wall pretty hard when you were pinned. Back injuries like that are to be taken seriously."
"Yes, All Might-Sensei." She stood up. "I'm definitely feeling it there."
"I'll take her. My finger's messed up anyway."
"I was thinking the same thing Midoriya. Be back soon, unless Recovery Girl keeps you."
"Deku." Midoriya stiffened. Bakugo had his back turned. "This ain't over. We'll fight one day, and it won't be like this farce of a battle. Got it?"
Midoriya nodded. With Bakugo's piece said, he led Hagakure out.
"NOW THEN! YOUNG BEIFONG AND BAKUGO! AM I RIGHT IN THAT NEITHER OF YOU HAVE ANY INJURIES?"
"Just a few scratches, I'm fine." Toph said.
"Yeah."
"GOOD! HEAD BACK TO THE OBSERVATION ROOM FOR THE NEXT BATTLE!"
"Right then."
"Whatever."
xXx
"AND THE MVP OF THIS BATTLE IS…YOUNG HAGAKURE!"
"But All Might, the Villains lost so…" Jirou interjected.
"…SO WHY DID I CHOOSE THE MVP FROM THE LOSING SIDE? EXCELLENT QUESTION! ANYONE CARE TO ANSWER?"
"I will, Sensei." Yaoyorozu spoke up. "She was the only one who performed with her goal in mind while only doing what was necessary to win without endangering the weapon. Bakugo, had he chosen to defend, could have been a much better match to defend the weapon from Toph-san while Hagakure was the worst match possible against her based on quirks. While her efforts would have been better put to use against Midoriya, she stalled for time for as long as possible to run the clock down, even having moved the weapon a few times."
"It's true," Toph interjected. "I had to readjust my launching point from the other building about three times before making my move."
"And concerning that move; it was an effective way to get the drop on your opponent whom you had the advantage on, but despite the advantage, you didn't act on it quickly enough. Furthermore, several of the bricks from your entrance struck the weapon. Had it been real, it would have detonated prematurely. You also destroyed much of the area, destabilizing the floor beneath yourself and the weapon."
"Ah. I guess that's true."
"Midoriya did an excellent job drawing Bakugo away from the weapon but ultimately backed himself into a corner, putting himself at unnecessary risk. Had it been a real villain, he would have died."
Bakugo rolled his eyes at that. It's not like he was really gonna kill him.
All Might cleared his throat. She had mentioned more things than he had thought of himself. Nevertheless…
"BRILLIANT! NOW, ON TO THE NEXT BATTLE!"
xXx
"Two slipped disks! You would have definitely felt that is the morning, young lady." Recovery Girl fussed. "Thank you for accompanying her, young man. Had she fallen on her way here, she'd be far worse off."
"Yeah." Midoriya agreed. He was seated in the chair next to Toru, who was dreary after taking the effects of the healing quirk. His own finger had been healed, with a bandage covering it.
BONK
"Ouch!" What was it with women hitting him?
"Now stop breaking your bones already! I know you're still getting used to that power of yours, but get it together!"
"Wait! You know about that?"
"Who do you think was part of his surgery team? Of course I know!" She lowered her cane and checked on Hagakure. Still out cold from healing.
"Very good. This young lady will be here a while, you should head back to class if you feel up to it."
"Got it."
"Oh, and young man?"
"Yeah?"
"Tell that oaf to do better and that I better not see any more injuries from you this week."
xXx
Kirishima looked up at the eight-story building. "Good thing we changed buildings, right? Those holes in the floor would have complicated things."
"Yeah." Uraraka seemed a bit worried to the redhead.
"Hey, you know Iida's an upstanding guy, and Sero seems pretty chill. Nothing to worry about" he said with a shark-toothed grin.
Uraraka smiled back. "You know, All Might's so much cooler in person than on television, right?"
"Yeah! So manly! Anyway, how do you want to tackle this?" He gestured towards the building.
She put a finger on her lips. "Hmm…are you afraid of heights, by chance?"
xXx
"TIMES UP! HEROES, INFILTRATE THE BUILDING! YOUR TIME STARTS NOW!
"And…done! Fully gifted-wrapped nuclear weapon!" Sero stood back to admire his work. The weapon was covered head to toe in his self-generated tape and was hung in the corner of the room like a fly in a spider web. "They're not getting close to that! Better coat the rest of the room, too what do you think Iida? Iida?" He turned to the armored hero-in-training. "You good, bro?"
Iida turned suddenly. "Behold! I am the incarnation of evil! Bwahahaha!"
…
…
"Dude."
"I know, it's too much."
"No way, that's awesome!"
"Really?"
"Yeah! But you gotta sell it, like, 'so you have outsmarted me, but I have outsmarted your outsmarting! Bwahahaha!'"
"I see! So, 'As you can see hero, there is nothing to use in the room for your Zero-Gravity! Bwahahahaha!'"
"Nice! And don't forget 'too bad, for the princess is in another' wait. What did you say?"
"The room. I removed any objects she could use to float with her gravity quirk."
"Way to think ahead, my guy."
"Thank you. And thanks to our position on the top floor, the easiest way for them to come in is through the top. So we will know exactly where they'll come in. And don't cover the entire room, it could hit me too."
"Copy."
They waited a bit longer. And a bit longer. And a bit longer too.
"Are they going the long way up?" Sero wondered aloud.
"Perhaps they've outsmarted our outsmarting."
"Good one."
"pfff"
They both whirled around at the new voice. Uraraka had been watching them for a couple minutes from behind the corner. Having blown her cover, she made a mad dash for the weapon.
"Recipro Burst!" Iida burst forth and tackled her into Sero's taping, just out of reach of the weapon. Sero shot more tape to secure her.
"Alas hero! It was a good attempt. But a foolish one, as you have walked right into our trap!"
"Indeed!" joined Sero "There is nothing you can possibly do now! Bwahahahahaha!"
"Bwahahahahahahaha!"
"BWAHAHAHAHAHA!"
"BWAHAHAHAHAHA!"
"pffffhahahahahahahaha…" Uraraka couldn't stop giggling. 'They're so serious!'
"Uraraka, now!" she heard in her ear piece.
Between giggles, she pressed her hands together. "Release!" she braced for impact.
The two mock villains stared at her. 'But she didn't float anything!' Iida thought. 'Unless…'
It took a couple moments. Then a couple more moments. 'Just how far did he go?' she thought.
Iida looked back at her. "It appears your plan has failed young her-"
CCCRRRRAAASSSSSHH
"RED COMET!"
A pincer attack! Kirishima had kept floating higher and higher until he couldn't aim his decent anymore, breaking straight through the ceiling like a meteor and slicing straight through the tape trap with his hardened body. The weapon, through sheer luck, swung to Uraraka by a few strands of tape.
"I got it!"
"THE HERO TEAM, WIIIIIIINS!"
xXx
"AN INGENIUS STRATEGY YOU TWO! YOUNG URARAKA, TRY AND KEEP IT TOGETHER NEXT TIME ALL RIGHT? BLOWING YOUR OWN COVER CAN BE DEADLY IN A REAL SITUATION."
"Yes, sir!"
Bakugo watched the observation screen, the shot of Kirishima falling from the sky was playing on loop. 'The sky drop was a gutsy move, I'll give him that.'
"Hey."
Toph sat down next to him. She couldn't watch the screen, but she was keeping pretty good track of the matches so far.
He narrowed his gaze. "The fuck do you want?"
"Just saying hi. Good match out there."
"Tch."
"I remember hearing you at the entrance exam. You weren't on the ground much, but you really killed it back then."
'Is she…mocking me?' he growled a bit.
"You were really focused then, not even stopping for the Zero-pointer. You clearly have a will to win." She leaned back into her seat. "That's why it doesn't make sense."
He decided to humor the sarcastic bat. "What doesn't?"
"Why you'd throw the match just to fight Midoriya. I get you have bad blood, but I don't really understand."
"What? I didn't throw the match! Are you mocking-"
"You should've fought me. You have an aerial advantage and more options for attack than invisogirl. Since you have such a low opinion of mttermouth, you could've let her sneak up on him. You wasted your effort. You didn't need to fight him, but you went out of your way to do so. Am I right?"
The two sat in silence. Toph was right of course, but it didn't mean he had to like it.
"I ain't got shit to explain to you, bitch."
"Whatever" she sighed, focusing on the next match.
'That diaper kid better keep it in his pants.'
xXx
'This is disgusting' Momo thought as she created the metal barriers. So far, the pervert had kept his word to Toph, but his eyes haven't. As she sealed the second to last door, she gestured to the last one.
"Huh? Why?" Mineta whined.
"Because, you're more useful out there where you can at least slow down the hero team. And you haven't stopped mentally undressing me since we started. Out." She was here to be a hero, not to be this little pervert's wet dream. He was practically shoved out by the much taller girl before she closed and sealed the door.
"Dammit!" he yelled to deft ears. He walked down the hall and downstairs where he could see the hero team making their plan. "Guy with a tail and a sword and a big guy with muscles, they must get all the girls!" he moaned. He pulled out a couple of balls. "Maybe if I completely stop them from even getting to the weapon, it'll impress her!" He immediately threw his balls all over the floors, walls, stairs, everywhere he could reach. "That'll stop them if they're not careful."
All Might blared the signal, sending the hero team in.
"Wait! Ojiro snapped. Sato had nearly stepped on a purple ball. "Close one" he muttered. "Must be the grape's."
"Most likely. They're not everywhere though, let's go. Just be careful." With the grace of a martial artist, Ojiro danced through the field of purple spheres.
'Sheesh, talk about a show-off.' Sato thought. Then again, he'd still be stuck had he stepped on that ball.
They carefully made it upstairs to find the short grape-headed boy, by himself.
"Your trap failed kid. Give up." Ojiro took a fighting stance as Sato ate some sugar to bulk up. The perv was covered in a shadow. 'Somethings not right.' Ojiro thought dimly.
Sato apparently got impatient. He rushed forward to grab the kid's shoulder. Sticky? He couldn't go!
"DECOY!" he yelled a bit late. "BEHIND YOU!"
Ojiro rolled out of the way just in time, the balls hitting the floor where he was just standing.
"I'LL TAKE YOU BOTH ON! ANYTHING FOR THE LADIES!" Mineta ran forward, balls in hand.
Ojiro, seeing the reckless rush, jumped and flipped, striking the smaller boy on the back of the head.
"OOWWWOWOWOWOW!" he kept rolling right into Sato.
"I got 'im! Go get the weapon!" Sato slurred. The sugar was getting to him, but his grip was strong and he didn't need to move to keep the ballboy in check.
Ojiro rushed upstairs, dodging spare balls that were littered about the place. He eventually found a doorway that was blocked by a steel barrier. 'This has got to be it.'
He drew his sword, aiming carefully at the weak points in the steel construction just like Master had taught him, and slashed through.
With a couple kicks to gain entry, he burst in.
Nothing was here!
"TIME'S UP! THE VILLAIN TEAM, WIIIIIIINS!"
xXx
Toph grinned at her friend's strategy. She created a decoy bunker on the 3rd floor the make the real one on the 5th. For the Villains, it was a matter of slowing down the heroes for at least 15 minutes. 'Apparently tail-boy knew how to use that sword of his though, who knew? Wonder where he learned?'

Jirou listened intently for their opponents as soon as All Might signaled. "They're on the second to top floor. But I can hear three voices in there, so be careful."
The two-toned boy stepped forward. "For your own safety, step back." She obliged at the cold voice. He placed his right hand upon the wall inside, immediately coating the entire building in ice. "I'm sure they'll want to play defensively like last time, but we've already won." He jerked his head forward. "Cover my six o'clock. Let's not underestimate them."
As they walked through the dark hallways, Jirou detected some slow breathing. "Wait." She stopped him. "Do you hear that?"
"No, we're almost there."
"I said wait. There!" It was Asui, but something wasn't right. The green-clad girl was prone on the ice. "She's ice cold!" Jirou wrapped her capture tape around her to count her out. "We have to warm her up. Can you do that?"
Todoroki nodded and placed his left hand on her. She started to awaken at the warmth. "Kero?"
"Shh, it's ok. You're captured now, just sit up."
"Alright." She sat up. "That was a cold move, ribbit."
"I did what I had to." He responded despondently.
"I'm taking her to the entrance, be careful."
"Right." He strode forward into the darkness.
As Jirou propped Asui up in the sunlight, her metabolism became healthier.
"You ok, now?"
"Yep, kero. But I'd suggest you go back to your teammate. He'll need the help."
"What do you m-"
"RRRRRROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAARRRR"
"Shit!" Inside, Todoroki was slammed against a wall by the living shadow.
"Surrender." Tokoyami ordered.
"Like hell" was the response. A glacier burst forward, crashing through the windows and creating space between him and Dark Shadow. With new room to move, he slid away from the duo and towards the weapon. 'Just a couple more meters.' Something grabbed his back.
And tossed him out of the building and into the tree the two girls were sitting by.
"Todoroki! Are you ok?" Jirou shouted. He tumbled out of the branches. "Never better." He glared at the offending building.
They ended up out of time. But that was fine. Tokoyami turned back on the lights, suppressing Dark Shadow. Though he was still frozen to the floor.
Todoroki reentered to thaw his opponent. 'Should I have? No. Never.'
xXx
"They're approaching." Shoji warned with a tentamouth. They were on the top floor, as neither Ashido or Aoyoma could quickly ascend outside the building.
"On it, stay on guard." Kaminari grinned, setting off sparks in his hand. "I got this."
…
Aoyama fumed at having blemishes on his sparkling cape as Ashido slid forward.
"Yeah! Look out Villains, here we come!" She yelled.
"I'm right here actually!"
…

BBBBBBZZZZZZZAAAPPPPPPP
xXx
"CONGRATULATIONS, VILLAIN TEAM! YOU DID VERY WELL, QUITE THE DIRECT APPROACH I MUST SAY."
"wheeeeeeeeeeeeyy…"
Toph and Jirou were both bursting with laughter at the brainfried boy, though Jirou tried harder to hide it.
xXx
"THOSE WERE SOME EXCELLENT BATTLES EVERYONE!"
"That was a refreshing change of pace, All Might-Sensei." Asui commented. Everyone agreed, remembering Aizawa's previous class.
"THANK YOU! NOW, FOR ONE MORE LESSON: HOW TO MAKE AN EXIT! LIKE A HEEEEERRROOOOOO!"
Class 1A watched the number one hero sprint out of sight. "Aw man!" Kirishima yelled "That was awesome!"
Toph nodded in agreement. She could still feel All Might sprinting. 'Time to head back.'
She turned to leave with the rest of them, but stopped in her tracks.
"Toph-san, are you alright?" Momo asked. Toph was walking with her and Midoriya and had just stopped, with wide eyes.
"What's our next class?"
"Homeroom, then we're done for the day."
"How long until then?"
"We finished early, so just over 20 minutes."
"Ok, I'll meet you there." With that, she Land Skimmed away; headed the same direction as All Might.
"Toph! Wait!" Too late, Toph was gone in a cloud of dust. Midoriya looked back. 'Is she ok? She left in a hurry, right after All-'
ding
"AAAAAAH!" Midoriya screamed and sprinted after her.
"Midoriya! What are you doing?" Momo called after him. Too late, again.
xXx
"Shit." Toshinori Yagi spat out more blood into the sink, still in his hero costume. 'That was too close. Had to dismiss class early.' He took a few more breaths, straightened up, and changed into his civilian attire. 'Glad no one saw me; I'm running shorter on time every day since I transferred my power to young Midoriya.' He wiped the blood of his chin and stepped out of the bathroom.
"Hi, All Might."
"Blakk!" More blood. He coughed a bit and leaned against the doorframe.
"Who? What? I don't, I don't see any All Might young lady!" 'Nice recovery, Toshi.'
"That's nice. I can't see you either."
'Shit!' Aizawa had warned him that she was clever. And a lie detector at that. He fell into another coughing fit.
"You're about 400 pounds lighter than before and you're hacking up a storm, you should sit down." Toph said plainly. She guided him to a bench. "Need some tissues?"
"No, I've got some. Thank you, young Beifong." He pulled his handkerchief from his coat pocket. He calmed down his cough and regarded the short girl. "I suppose you'd like some answers."
"I'm curious, but it's not really my business either." She admitted. She had gotten over her initial shock on the way and while she was waiting outside the door. From his demeanor, he'd probably been dealing with this for a while and while it wasn't her place to pry, he was clearly in pain.
Toph was never really good at minding her own business anyway.
And that's it for Chapter 5! Let's see: omnidirectional sense of direction, lie detection, and a stubborn attitude? All Might never stood a chance.
A bit of a longer chapter with everyone's battle trial, I can see why they chose to split it up in the anime. I thought to myself, do people really want to read through every single students' battle?
Heh.
Her hero costume took a lot of thought and was rewritten a bunch of times. The bracers stayed constant though, they're a bit like the Dai Li's earth gloves and shoes and can be used as such. They soften on command and harden to a state just less durable than metal, allowing her more variety on unfamiliar ground. The costume itself is a mix of her normal green outfit and her Fire Nation disguise, with a bit more modernity for the times she's in, in terms of design and fabric. Highly breathable with full range of motion. The headpiece is exactly the same as canon though.
Literally everyone is aware that Hagakure is naked in her hero gear. Except Toph. To her, Hagakure has no advantage whatsoever. I so wanted Bakugo to make the strategic decision and fight Toph instead, but I knew his ego wouldn't allow for it, especially now. Also, Bakugo is relentless and brutal. He's also a hormonal teenager partnered with a naked girl. Don't me.
Once again, Toph is hyping Midoriya up; encouraging him to stand up to Bakugo and trusting him to strategize and execute his part of the plan. Midoriya reminds me a bit of Aang (maybe because they're both the protagonist or something).
Some pairings are starting to form. Nothing is set in stone, and most are friend ships anyway. Uraraka and Kirishima are both rays of sunshine and they fit together I think, at least as friends.
Honestly, I don't really know if you can slip two disks after being slammed against a wall that hard. If there are any doctors out there, do correct me. I'm not even certain that one could walk after that sort of injury, so let me know.
Ugh, I can already tell the USJ is going to be hard to write. I've got this chapter and another written, so I've got time. Still, though, I want to make it awesome.
And now for those reviews:

Aizawa is tough as nails and definitely has a plan in mind. You'll see what he's got in store soon enough.
As for your question: she should be able to sense through the concrete and whatever bendables are touching it. But sensing through concrete, through wood, then earth? I wouldn't think so, but I didn't write the show. Toph never ran into something like that in canon, but she can make out shapes very well through any object's vibrations (referring to when she kicked the sand-sailor in the desert that one time).

Thanks! Me too!

Toph, I would think anyway, wouldn't go by her regular name. While she any her parents are on good terms, she'd want to make her own name for herself; separate from Beifong. As for the title, I just wanted people to know what it's about. So no, not her hero name. Sorry ;P
I don't think wood bending would happen tbh. Gazan, from LoK, was imprisoned on a wooden prison in the middle of the ocean for 16 years before being broken out. If there was a way to wood-bend, with his talent, he would have found it. Sand, mud, and metal though? Definitely one day.
Iroh and Zuko do exist (long and shaggy btw) but they won't be getting involved anytime soon. As for Azula, I would love to tell you I know exactly what to do with her, and where and when she'll turn up if at all. But alas, I don't yet. Didn't even think of it before today. Lol. I'll figure it out, but with all the similarities between Todoroki and Zuko, there are just as many similarities between her and Dabi (ok, maybe just the blue fire and villainy, but you see my point). She deserves the spotlight if she's going to be in at all.
I love that fic and wish there was more!
So many possibilities, my guy. They may need better writers than me though.
In short, the Sports Festival will be fun. No doubt.
To Sebecca:
Thank you! I'm glad it's meeting expectations and more. Sadly, you're right. I ended up cutting Koda Koji, as much as I love his character. Don't worry though, I'd say he's currently pursuing a career in rehabilitating abused animals. That's a hero in my book.
You're also right about your concern. Only Nezu and Recovery Girl know about OFA in canon. But I decided to change that here because Midoriya's success has much to do with mastering his quirk. It didn't make sense to me for Aizawa, his homeroom teacher, to not be in the know on his own student's power. Does it change how the story works? Yeah, it does. But I'm sticking to it. Aizawa has also been working as an underground hero for years, if anyone can keep a secret, it's him. Unless Tsukautchi or Toph is on call.
She needs to be aware of her shortcomings in order to grow into the greatest earthbender in the world. And no matter what, a terrible match-up is a terrible match-up. If she needed help against those buzzard wasps, imagine her having to go up against Hawks, for example. The more prepared she is for that, the better.

No, not a reincarnation type deal. More like a mash up: if she were to grow up in the world of BNHA. Sorry for the confusion :)
That's it for now! Thank you for the reviews and always feel free to send your reviews, comments, concerns, gripes, critiques, and artwork. Peace.
