Chapter three
The journey begins
Shinji and his new companion Asajj Ventress made it back to the remains of her ship and salvaged what supplies that remained intact, food, and medical supplies.
Which were enough for both of them, after patching each other up, Shinji went in search of more suitable wear, while Asajj just scoffed, not believing the boy would find anything to wear on this seemingly dead world.
To her surprise, he came back wearing a black, and white tunic with sandshoes. (Think Luke and Anakin's Tatooine outfit)
The force works in mysterious and unexpected ways, as her dead master Ky Narec, once taught her. Night was falling, and the pair made camp by Asajj's damaged ship.
There they began to exchange histories, Asajj began to feel the similarities to herself, basically a slave all her life, first to her master on Rattataki when she was small, then basically a slave to her former Sith masters, Sidious and Dooku, and this boy. He was abandoned and recalled, only to be practically enslaved to the will of his father and others, chasing something he would most likely never have.
Acceptance and love
But underneath, Asajj sensed the boy's bitterness, his fear, his hate and anger. If harnessed properly he could become very a powerful asset.
'But should I train him in the ways of the dark side like I was? Although my own training was limited.' thought Ventress as she looked at the sleeping boy
"The light side, the dark side always in constant conflict with each other. Never in balance."
Asajj stood up and walked to the edge to peer at the dark pyramid in the distance. She felt great power coming within. Asajj sighed and went to sit back near the campfire. It was then she decided to open herself to the Force, sitting down crossing her legs to meditate. Ventress reached out to the force for guidance. Various images began to pass through her mind.
A group of dark warriors with shadow armor, wielding lightsaber pikes, fighting with other beings wielding lightsabers of different colors, losses quickly piling on both sides.
The top of the pyramid firing several energy shots, destroying large capital ships
Two figures cloaked in black and white, entering the pyramid.
A figure cloaked in Cortosis armor, igniting a red lightsaber
A beam of light coming within the pyramid
"Hmm.." murmured Ventress as she snapped from her vision looking at the pyramid in the distance.
"That pyramid, whatever is within could hold the answers to why we're here, and if I'm fortunate, it'll hold the power I'll need to exact my vengeance!"
'No Asajj, Vengeance is not the way.' a male voice suddenly echoed from the sky
"What? that voice? It could not be" the woman murmured
'Have you forgotten me already..my apprentice?"
"Master Narec." she whispered in shocked recognizing the voice
'Yes, I am here, because you are here. You've been lost in the darkness for a long, long time.' said Narec
"Master,"
At that point Ventress, felt like she was a young padawan again, training with her master Ky Narec when he was on Rattatak, training her without permission from the Jedi council. All the darkness that had been within her, was suddenly being washed away like a tide on a beach.
"How are you here? What is this planet master?" Asajj asked in a soft tone, as if she was a child again
'This planet, like any other is a conduit for which the entire Force of the universe flows.'
The Dathomirain still continued to search around still seeing no sign of her former Jedi Master.
'Asajj, the force has given you a new path to walk. You've been lost to the dark side for many years.'
"Master, the Jedi left you stranded-"
'A lie Asajj the Jedi council was not aware I was on Rattatak. The force guided me there for a reason. That reason being you. I stayed because of you.'
"Master," Asajj said softly as if she was still the same child as before "Dooku and Sidious have led me astray for so long, only to discard me when it was convenient."
'That is the way of all Sith, but now you must abandon their ways, you now have another chance, With the boy. Teach him, guide him, be patient with him, and above all care for him, and in turn he will teach and care for you. ' said Narec
"The boy, master how? Where should I begin?"
'There is a valley, to the northwest of here. It is strong with the force. There you will find what you need.'
"What lies there, master?"
'That is for you to discover. For now, rest my student, the trials you will face here, will be just as deadly as the clone wars. Beware.' Narec's voice echoing away
"Master, Master?!" Asajj called but getting no answer
She looked back at the sleeping boy and as much as she loathed it deep down, she would need help, and right now the boy was all she had.
"You do not look like much boy. But I sense you have great potential and if my old master says so," said Ventress sitting down near the campfire
"Are you really supposed to be my redemption? How am I supposed to help you?" she asked herself looking at the sleeping boy
Asajj decided to ponder these questions no longer and rested by the campfire.
Morning (or what it seemed like morning) soon broke, and Shinji woke up to the bone-white skinned woman lying on her side with her back turned to him. Getting to his feet Shinji walked to the edge to get a closer look at the dark pyramid in the distance.
"That pyramid? Why does it feel like I've seen it before," said Shinji getting an odd feeling
RUSTLE RUSTLE
"Hmm.."
Shinji looked back to see the assassin gone from her spot.
"Ventress, Ventress," Shinji called looking around
Shinji walked to the remains of her ship to see if she was salvaging anything else that she might have missed. It was then he began to feel a strange buzzing noise in his head, as if something was coming.
SNAP HISS!
"Huh?!"
Shinji whirled around and saw that Ventress, ignited her lightsaber and rushed at him. Quickly he activated his own lightsaber and blocked the unexpected assault. Ventress was slashing and stabbing with ferocity, Shinji was blocking blow after blow, mostly out blind self-defense, than actual training.
To his credit, he began to push back just a bit with vertical and underhand strikes, but there was hardly any force behind them. Almost immediately, Asajj knocked the saber out of the boy's hand and pointed her blade at his throat.
"Had I been an enemy, you would be dead now boy." Ventress hissed
The woman called his lightsaber into her hand using the Force.
"What the hell is this about?!" asked Shinji taking it back
"A test," she said
"A test?"
"I wanted to know how you were able to defend yourself, earlier yesterday, you displayed a lightsaber style that few in the Jedi order know of. I want to know how you did it."
Shinji sighed
"I..I..don't know, as soon as I touched this thing, whatever was on it suddenly came flooding to me, like an echo or something," said Shinji
"Hmm...interesting, I believe the skill is called Psychometry. Touch an object and witness events connected to it through the force. You felt its history, impressive, there's only one Jedi I've encountered that has that particular skill." Asajj explained
"Do you know what this planet is Ventress?" asked Shinji
"I don't know, all I know is it we are on a planet far removed from any star system, far from any controlled space sector, Republic or C.I.S. "
"Republic or C.I.S? Were you..." Shinji started to say
"In the midst of a large battle, yes, yes I was. I will explain later and when I'm ready, for now, we need to move." said the Dathomirain
"Where are we going?" asked Shinji
"To a valley northwest of here," Asajj answered "Hopefully we'll find something there that'll explain what this planet is, and why we're here."
The pair made their trek, through the debris-covered field, and skeletal remains of a battle fought. Shinji for some reason could sense her uneasiness around him, she was contemplating something, but couldn't figure out what it was.
He glanced up to see a small green bird, hovering in the air as if observing them. He had an odd feeling about that bird. Then again this whole planet gave him an odd feeling. The alien woman too, but yet he didn't feel any dark intent from her.
"Stay alert boy, and stay focused boy." Ventress cautioned
"Yes," Shinji acknowledge
RUMBLE. RUMBLE RUMBLE
"Hm?"
Ventress took out her lightsaber ready to defend herself, Shinji copied the same action. Then something began digging themselves out of the ground. A group of large beetle-like insects, with large pincers, burrowed their way out of the ground
"REEEE!" they screeched as they surrounded the pair.
The pair activate their lightsabers and readied themselves to fight.
Brazzz
Snap, hiss!
"REEEEE!"
Ventress used her incredible speed to decapitate one instantly. Then stabbing another on her right side.
"Ha-yah!"
While Shinji didn't have the benefit of two lightsabers, he swung around his blade causing them to step back. Some images flashed in his mind
The saber's previous wielder's techniques passed through his mind
A hooded figure, raising his lightsaber overhead and slashing his enemy. Then the image of the same figure, leaping and slashing at a similar creature
The vision quickly faded, as Shinji gripped his crossguard lightsaber tightly, he got in close raising it up.
SLASH!
Striking the beetle through its horn, killing it instantly. Shinji then focused on the others, he managed to stab one through its head, he was hit from the side.
"Argh!" Shinji grunted
"Watch your flank boy!" Ventress yelled slashing two more beetles
Shinji nodded and swung wildly, almost furiously, slicing a few beetle bugs then pulling a sudden delayed thrust stabbing a beetle in the thorax.
"Yah! " Shinji thrust forward
Ventress used a strong force push, to blow a trio of beetles to pieces. Then slash a beetle in half coming from behind.
SLASH!
It wasn't long before the pair dispatched the remaining beetles, although Shinji had to put in a bit more effort to kill the remaining one. Asajj had observed some of his movements, they were strong yes, but raw, wild, and unfocused.
She deactivated her lightsabers and motioned for him to follow. Unbeknownst to the pair, someone in a dark cloak watched from a distance. The figure pressed a button on their wrist and vanished from the spot.
"The lightsaber technique you performed in battle, how did you know it?" Ventress asked as they walked
Shinji looked a bit surprised at the question but answered
"I...I'm still trying to figure that out myself. It just came to me, and I knew." the boy replied
"Hmm..I see." said Ventress 'His psychometry must be greater than that of Quin Lin Vos'
Nothing else was said as the pair kept onward. Passing through more debris, and remains of starships from an unknown time period. Some appear to be tanks and starfighters that looked similar to Republic starfighters at least to Asajj.
A little bit later the pair found themselves in the valley, up head was a pathway to a building and what seemed to be dark-cloaked statues with triangle helmets, dark robes with a red line going down the middle, holding a pike at their sides lined up along the pathway
"Those statues. " Shinji said getting a bad feeling just by looking at them
"I know, tread cautiously," Asajj warned feeling a dark aura emanate from them
Ventress took out her lightsaber just incase, Shinji followed closely looking warily at the statues.
"Calm your fears boy, I can feel them rising up and down," said Ventress
'How could she know that?'
As they were about halfway, the tops of the statue began to glow red, then began to move. The Dathomirain and the third child neared the entrance a force field blocked their way
"What?! A Force field! What trickery is this?"
Out of the corner of his eye, Shinji saw two objects approaching from behind, turning around, his eyes widened
"Uh, Ventress," said Shinji activating his lightsaber
Brazzzz!
Turning around herself, Asajj saw two of the dark-robed statues that they passed by had come to life, both a few inches taller than both of them, as they stepped close the dark figures activated their lightsaber pikes.
SNAP HISS!
SNAP HISS!
Asajj turned on her lightsabers and readied herself. For Shinji, more images started to flash through his mind.
A hooded figure leaping, and slashing at his opponent, slicing his staff in half.
The vision faded, and Shinji suddenly got a focused look in his eye.
"Boy, break right! Wait for an opening to strike. Do not hesitate!" Ventress ordered and he nodded
Shinji thrust forward, with a quick vertical strike, which the dark robe guard blocked with his pike, Ventress, jumped high in the air and clashed with the dark garbed warrior.
Shinji was clashing with a standard attack, narrowly avoiding getting hit. Shinji backed up a few feet, getting some distance, only for the dark guard dash at Shinji causing him to block quickly. During the battle, the small green owl-like bird was circling the air observing the battle.
'Use the force Shinji!' a soft feminine voice spoke inside his mind
"Huh?!"
Shinji clashed with the dark guard's pike again, feeling himself losing in strength. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Ventress beginning to struggle, even with her skill and experience, she was having a difficult time with the dark guard.
'Let go, Shinji.'
Shinji closed his eyes and breathed. Began to tap into something, something he had felt since he arrived here. The feeling began to rise and strengthen him.
The Third child began to push back, with surprising strength, grunting loudly Shinji pushed off the dark guard a few steps back, using a vertical forward strike, then a spin around strike, adding more force to the attack. The guard raised his pike again, intent on finishing the boy off.
"Break right, wait for an opening, and don't hesitate," he muttered
The dark guard brought his pike down, only to hit empty space, Shinji rolled out of the way and...
"Yah"
STAB!
Shinji thrust his blade directly into the hip of the dark guard, in one end out the other.
"Brahhh!" the dark guard grunted in pain
Shinji, moved forward cutting the dark guard in half like butter.
"Good work, boy!" said Asajj
Ventress was gaining ground, on her own opponent. She used the force to levitate the second dark guard then slam him on a pillar, destroying it
CRASH!
The assassin didn't stop there, using her incredible speed, she circled around, trying to catch the dark guard off balance.
WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
The dark guard stood upright, while Ventress continued to circle around the dark guard, he swung only to miss as the Dathomirain leaped high into the air, and cut through the helmet only for her one blade to suddenly switch off.
"What? Cortosis?!" she went before moving to dodge a strike
"Rarggh!" Asajj yelled using a hard force to push the dark guard back again, knocking him into another pillar, causing him the dark warrior to drop his pike
Ventress quickly took advantage, she spun around gracefully reigniting her other saber.
STAB! STAB!
"Brahhh!" the guard moaned before slumping down dead.
Ventress turn off her lightsabers looked at the other guard that was also dead, and the boy himself who looked in shock, at what he had just done. The force field around the entrance of the ruins then disappeared.
"Boy," she said, "Come."
Ventress walked forward into the steps of the ruins, Shinji slowly steadily followed after looking at the corpses to make sure they were dead.
(Inside the ruins)
The pair entered the ruins which looked like to Shinji Egyptian ruins, if the odd hieroglyphs were any indication. Asajj recognized some of them to be of ancient text. Perhaps pre-dating the Jedi and Sith. As they were walking Ventress thought back to their earlier struggle with those dark guards. He barely managed to hold his own, despite having no sense of formal training.
The force was strong with him, if Asajj was going to survive, if they were both going to survive she would need to train him properly with that in mind.
"Boy." Asajj stopped short with Shinji stopping behind her
"Yes," Shinji answered
"In this unfamiliar world, far removed from any star system, far from any controlled, space sector Republic or C.I.S. We are on a dangerous planet, filled with untold terrors. Those birds, insects, and guards that attacked us were just the beginning. I sense there's more dangers on this planet, that you're nowhere near ready to face head-on, if we are to survive, you must become more than what you are now." Asajj finished
"Are...you..saying that you want to train me?" asked Shinji
There was some reluctance in the eyes of the Dathomirain. How can she be an effective teacher, to a boy from a no-name backward planet no one has ever heard of? Moreso his potential could surpass, not just her own, but that of the Jedi and her former master.
Shinji could indeed sense her uncertainty and he didn't need this 'Force' Ventress speaks of to tell him that. The only teacher he had was back on earth, and he only taught the basics of living. The man hardly encouraged anything else besides the cello.
But Ventress was offering to teach him to use this ' Force' but only because she needed him and he needed her, even though they spent the latter part of last night exchanging some histories (Although for Shinji it was his whole history) Shinji didn't know her completely.
'Still, we'll need each, other if we're going to survive and find a way off this world. I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away.' thought Shinji
"If you are willing to teach me, I will learn, Sensei or Shujin," stated Shinji
"Sensei, Shujin?" questioned Asajj
"It means "teacher" and "Master" in my native language," Shinji explained
"Hmmm, very well, you may call me Sensei, apprentice, come," Asajj instructed walking forward.
The pair proceeded onward deeper into the building, creaking pipes, dripping water echoed all throughout the chamber. The ground was scorched, and littered with debris, armor, and skeletal remains. A metal pipe suddenly collapsed right in front of them.
CRASH!
"Mind your surroundings apprentice, this place, as it appears is very unstable," Asajj said stepping around the pipe
"Yes, sensei," answered Shinji watching the walls carefully
CREAK!
CREAK!
The pair continued on for a good six minutes, carefully, until they saw something up ahead behind a large door that was half torn off.
Using the force Asajj carefully moved it away, entering with caution they walked to a vast room with empty shelves, broken monitors, broken tables, and destroyed statues. Skeletal remains and debris littered the floor. In the center of the room stood some sort of module.
"What was this place?" asked Shinji looking
"Hmm. it might have been some sort of command center. Or a library." Ventress guessed observing the room
Shinji walked over to the module and touched it attempted to feel something.
Tap!
Tap!
Tap!
"Hmm, strange," Shinji said aloud touching it
"What?" His new sensei asked
"I thought if I touched it I-" Shinji said touching a button
Whrrrip
The module suddenly spurred to life as the hologram of the entire planet came to life.
"Whoa, amazing" Shinji gasped "A real live hologram."
"Doesn't Earth have holo-networks?" asked Asajj with a raised eyebrow
"No, my planet isn't even close to this level of technology."
"Ancient technology to be exact, your planet sounds more primitive than I first thought apprentice, " the Dathomarian scoffed walking to the console
She clicked some more buttons to examine the holo-map, she clicked another button on the side opposite her apprentice and pulled up a recording of a large scale battle that was taking place. Much like the recordings of the clone ships attacking the Trade Federation on Genosis. She clicked again and found nothing. Furrowing her brow, Asajj clicked again, an empty file, she click one more time another blank file
"Grrrr." she growled in frustration
She click several more times and stumbled across a recording. On the projector was a man, in a cloak, his face obscured in shadow.
"Who is this Sensei?" asked Shinji looking at the hologram
"This is Master Jago Zala. If you are playing this recording, then our battle with Rav...zzzzz ...has been lost, and the Pyramid was not taken" he said sadly
"Hmm, so a battle did take place here a millennia ago." Asajj mused
"To whoever played this recording, you must know this one of the few planets in this unknown region of space far from Republic and Sith empire sectors. This planet is a conduit between the light and dark side of the force, only those seeking true balance find their way here. A great power rests here, hidden in the temple. And like with all great power, some wanted it for good, others for evil.
An army of dark side wielders, separate from the Sith empire found their way here and captured the temple in the north, in a vain attempt to use its power for their desire to conquer the known galaxy." Spoke Jago
Shinji and Asajj both remained silent taking this information all in.
"Fortunately their efforts were for naught. A group of young force wielders under my command managed to gather the five sacred relics connected to the temple and scattered them throughout the planet. "
Before either one of them could ask, an image popped up to reveal the objects in questions, to be a set of small stone Obelisks, each with specific markings in front.
"These Obelisks, are the keys to vast knowledge, to the past, present and future, and possibly give access to different worlds, different timelines, that only the force could show."
"Hmm..interesting," Ventress said intrigued
'Wow, so these things may have a possible way, of getting me back home.' Shinji thought taking this information
'Do you really wish to return home?' the same feminine voice echoed in his head
Shinji glanced around a bit, to find the source of the voice, before turning his attention back on the hologram.
"If these Obelisks fall into the wrong hands, star systems and entire galaxies will descend into chaos and ruin," stated Jago in a grave tone.
"I may not know who you are, but if you are here, then it must be through the will of the force that you have come to this planet. So the task now falls to you." Jago said
"In this chamber, you will find a map that will guide you to each location to where Obelisks are hidden, but beware, this planet is strong with the light and dark side of the force. You will be challenged like never before by all manner of trials of this planet, My time is running out, the enemy is approaching, so I leave you this final word: Trust in the force." Jago stated emphatically
The recording ended with the pair digesting what they've just learned. A myriad of thoughts were running through Asajj's mind. This has just confirmed what she had suspected. Those relics, those ships were of the ancient Jedi Order and ancient the Sith Empire.
But these Jedi seemed, different than the ones she had fought and killed during the clone war. Now she was here in an unknown region of the galaxy. A mysterious sector of space, that many dare not enter into, for any reason. Alongside a young boy, strong in the force.
Even now she could sense his thoughts, the poor boy was very easy to read. These Obelisks contain knowledge that Lord Sidious had sought, and the fact that even he was not aware of this, brought a brief smile to her face. Shinji placed his hand on the console and the center of it opened up, to reveal a small silver cube-shaped device. Cautiously Shinji picked it up to examine it further, he glanced at his Sensei and asked;
"Sensei, so what do we do now?" asked Shinji
The Dathomirain looked deep in thought before replying.
"We begin the search for these Obelisks my apprentice." She replied
End chapter
Endnotes: I wanted to update this in honor of the Mandalorian S2, but it looks like I missed my window, sadly real life gets in the way. But anyway there it is. Shinji and Asajj begin their journey as Master and Student, sure at first Asajj will just want to use Shinji to gain the power of the Obelisks, but over time she will care for him. Think of it like Piccolo and Gohan their relationship as Master and Student. Evolving into something else, not gonna lie, it's been weighing heavily on my mind but only if that's what you all want. As for why Shinji took up being Asajj's apprentice so easily cause, he gets through life by people telling him what to do, which is a lousy way to live. And I like to thank Serpentemperor707 for his Chaos guards idea, I apologize if I didn't get their description right. Also, I decided to save the identity of the big bad on the planet for the next chapter. Serpentemperor gave me one, but I am open to other ideas. Next chapter Shinji and Ventress officially began training while searching for the Obelisks, along the way they get an unexpected companion. That's it, and on another, note I'm seriously considering a title change. Let me know if that should happen. Read and Review and leave ideas and suggestions, also there's a poll on my profile. May the Force be with you and stay prime
