Esther raced upstairs to her room and began to read the letter. She couldn't believe her eyes as she read that there was a secret society of magic users and that there had been a war that had been stopped by the baby boy downstairs. Her eyes narrowed on the words about blood wards that would protect those of shared blood and she smirked as she began to plan. She put the letter back into the cupboard under the stairs and snuck up behind Petunia as she finished breakfast, noticing she only made enough for three.
"Good morning, mummy." She said.
Petunia startled before turning to her new daughter with a small smile, "Good morning, Esther. Did you sleep well?"
Esther enthusiastically nodded, "Yes, mummy. I was wondering, do I have any aunties or uncles?"
Petunia nodded, "You have an Aunt named Marge, she's Vernon's sister. She'll be coming over to meet you next week."
"I'm excited to met her. How about you, mummy? Do you have any brothers or sisters?" She asked in feigned innocence.
Petunia stiffened and her smile became strained, "Yes. I have— had a little sister named Lily. She passed away last night. We'll be taking care of her son from now on, he's a month younger than Dudley."
Petunia's obvious reluctance showed, but Esther ignored it. She knew what she needed to do for her new plans to begin.
"Oh… I'm really sorry, mummy. You must be very upset that your baby sister is gone, but you're very kind to take in your baby nephew. The neighbors are going to be singing your praises for taking him in. Especially since, with your loving touch, he'll end up just as smart and successful as Dudley. When he becomes someone great, like a lawyer or doctor, the women in the neighborhood will be so jealous of how superior you are to them when it comes to raising children. You're so amazing, I want to be just like you when I grow up."
Esther felt as if she had maybe laid it on a bit thick, but pushed the thought aside as she noticed the many expressions her aunt's: distaste, confusion, consideration, greed, pride, and smug satisfaction. Petunia preened at the thought of being the envy of the neighborhood. At first, she had been planning on eventually paint her sister, Lily's husband, and eventually her son in a bad light. Yet, Esther's innocent praise gave her a much better idea. She realized now that if she had gone with her original plan then the neighbors would probably gossip about her behind her back. They would have been sympathetic of course, but behind her back they would say she wasn't a good mother if her nephew grew to become a delinquent at such a young age. If she remembered correctly, Lily's husband James was part of the wizarding police force and they had been targeted by some evil wizard. It would be the prefect tragedy to spread around: James, a police officer, being targeted by a terrorist and the young couple were killed for trying to put the terrorist behind bars. Their poor son was orphaned and she quickly gained custody, hoping to protect and raise him in a way to make his parents proud. Every accomplishment the boy would make would paint her parenting skills as superior. Of course, she'd have to work on making sure Vernon was on board with her new plan. Maybe she could convince him that a more loving approach would allow for Harry to empathize with them as they told him of the horrors that the magical world had brought upon his parents. That way, when the magical world came knocking on their door, Harry would want absolutely nothing to do with them. What better revenge than to have their 'savior' reject them?
Petunia smiled softly at Esther before choosing her next words carefully, "That's true. Now, let's put this behind us for now. I need to wait to speak to Vernon tonight. Until then, why don't you go upstairs and bring Dudley down. I need to… go get Harry. I think he's playing… hide and seek."
Esther beamed before nodding, well aware that Petunia would wait until she was out of sight before getting Harry out of the cupboard under the stairs. She was glad the first part of her plan was working, it would help her for Dudley and Harry to grow close to one another and learn all she could on how to care for their needs before she killed the Dursley couple. Dudley gave her a wide smile when he saw her and made grabby hands towards her. She quickly picked up Dudley and frowned at how heavy he was, she'd slowly give him smaller and smaller amounts of food until it was a reasonable amount for a child his age. She'd need to also do her best to curb any bad habits he could be developing from Petunia's overindulgence. They came downstairs to the sight of Harry sitting in Petunia's lap as she applied some cream on his scar to help the inflammation. Dudley stared at Harry with curiosity before turning to Esther and pointing to the smaller boy.
Esther smiled before moving to sit beside Harry and Petunia with Dudley on her lap, "This is your new brother. After breakfast, we can all go play together. Okay?"
Dudley stared at Esther then to his mother before turning back to Harry. Dudley smiled and began babbling to Harry and Harry, after a few moments of hesitation, began to babble back to him. After everyone was fed, Esther played with the two babies and the two quickly became friends. Although, Esther had had to stop Dudley from poking little Harry curiously. The day went by quickly and the younger children had become inseparable. When dinner was ready, Dudley had fought against being separated from the younger baby before being bribed with chocolate. He was quickly put into his high chair before he could make a bigger fuss and Harry sat on Esther's lap to eat. Petunia frowned, she needed to go shopping for more baby supplies since Harry had been dropped off in a basket with nothing more than a blanket and letter. She scowled at the thought of the wizards, such horrible people. Now that she planned on raising Harry a bit more nicely, she imagined poor Dudley in Harry's position. How dare those wizards just drop a baby off in the middle of the night in the autumn weather with nothing more than a single blanket to stave off the cold! Petunia quickly began her weekday ritual and prepared a small cup of bourbon for Vernon. Petunia stood by the door patiently as the sound of a car pulling in was heard.
"Here you are, Vernon." Petunia said lovingly as she handed him the glass of bourbon and kissed his cheek.
"Thank you, Pet. Now, where are the children?" Vernon asked, gulping down the alcoholic drink.
"They're in the dining room, but before you go in there... Vernon, we need to talk about… the boy."
Vernon sneered, "What about the little freak?"
"I know we planned on not including Harry in the family, but I have come up with a much better plan." She said, hoping to get her idea out before he started yelling, "Magic is unnatural, but the boy can't help who his parents were and I think there's a better way to make sure the boy doesn't get involved with those freaks world. Please don't get angry or raise your voice, just let me tell you about my plan."
Vernon scowled, "Fine. I'm listening, Pet."
"If you tried to stomp the magic out of him, there's a strong possibility that his magic could turn against you to protect him or one of the neighbors could find out and think we're abusing him. It would be much better to treat the boy nicely and turn him against the wizarding world."
Vernon's face had been steadily becoming more and more angry as at each word she spoke before he paused as the last part she'd said sunk in, "Turning him against his world?"
Petunia smiled, "Think about it. If we raised him to associate the wizarding world as evil and us as his saviors from a society stuck in the dark ages, he'd never want to go to their dreadful school. Not only that, but think of the praise we'll get from our friends and neighbors! Maybe invite your boss over after we get Harry a bit more settled and show him how we took in the poor dear after his parents tragic death. He might even give you a promotion when he sees how family-oriented you are and we can have Esther perform on the new piano I purchased."
Vernon slowly began to smile at his brilliant wife, "You're a genius, Pet! We can use the boy to help me get promoted at work and I'll get paid more. Not only that, but the boy will still be kept away from all that magic nonsense. You're so good to me, Pet. Always thinking of our family and me."
Petunia preened at the praise, "Thank you, Vernon. I know it'll be... difficult at first, but this is the best way. I can't wait to see the faces of those freaks when little Harry rejects their school invitation to stay in the normal world."
The two of them smiled smugly at one another before going to the dinning room to have supper. It was stilted at first, but Vernon eventually managed to push aside his hatred of magic to help the boy realize how terrible the wizarding world was. When it was time for bed, Petunia put both boys in Dudley's crib and smiled softly at her son holding Harry possessively. She then went to go tuck Esther in, never noticing the smirk on her new daughters face as she left. Everything was going according to plan.
