"I'm having a party tonight," a male voice from behind us said as we started to leave. We turned to see two of the boys from the game behind us. "You should come by."
"Sure! I love parties!" Ty Lee exclaimed. He turned to Mai. "You can come to."
Azula put her hands on her hips. "What about me and my brother? Don't you know who we are?" she demanded.
"Don't you know who we are?" the spokesman asked, reversing the question. "We're Chan and Ruon-Jian." Azula raised an eyebrow. "So?"
"Fine, you can come to. Just so you know, some of the most important teenagers in the Firenation are going to be there so try to act normal, okay?" Chan said, giving Azula a dirty look. She rolled her eyes, "Fine."
After a while of hanging out on the beach more, we went back to the building. Lo and Li made us dinner. "Why didn't you tell them who we were?" I asked Azula. When people don't know her, she usually gets really mad and screams her royal name. This time she didn't. "I guess I was intrigued by them," she replied. "I'm just so used to people worshiping us." She paused as she put food in her mouth. "I guess for once, I wanted to see what it would be like if they treated us normally."
"Ember Island reveals the true you," Lo said.
"Like waves of the sea," Li said, waving her arms to mimic the sea. They stood. "To the party!" they said together again, pointing to the sky. Those two really creep me out. Azula leads the group the beach house. She uses the door-knocker. Chan opens the door. He looks at us. "Um...you guys are a little early. No one is here yet."
"I overheard you telling someone you will be partying from dusk 'till dawn. It is dusk," Azula said. "We are the perfect party guest and arrive on time." He gives us a confused look but shrugs it off. "Come on," Chan said, opening the door wider. Ty Lee entered first. "Okay, there is one rule. My dad doesn't know I'm having this party so don't mess anything up," he says, looking at Azula.
"That's a sharp outfit, Chan. Careful. You could puncture the hull of a Firenation battleship, leaving millions to drown at sea," Azula said. Chan gave her a confused look. "Um, thanks?" Was that supposed to be a compliment? Was she trying to flirt with him? Chan walked away and Azula went to investigate the house. Roun-Jian stops her. "Hey! First one's here, huh?" He continues talking to Azula but I can't concentrate on him. All I can think about is Ruon-Jian.
"He thinks he so great. What do you think of him?" I ask Mai. She doesn't look at me. "I can't have an opinion on him if I hardly know him." Is she saying that so she wouldn't have to tell me the truth? "You like him, don't you?" Mai didn't answer. She just walked away. I knew it! She does like him!
Eventually, more people showed up. Then the music started. It was kinda boring though. I don't even like parties that much. Why did I come? There isn't anything to do. Everyone is just talking anyway. "I'm bored," Mai said next to me.
"I know."
"I'm hungry."
"So what?"
Mai paused before answering. "So, find me some food." I stand up. "Sure." I have to push my way through the crowd because people keep getting in he way. "Move," I said to some who didn't. I grab a plate and start to get food on it. There is a wide variety but I don't want to walk all the way acroos to get some more. I look at the plate. That should be enough to calm Mai down.
I turn to walk away. Some rude person bumps me and knocks the food out of my hands. "Hey! That food was for my cranky girlfriend!" I point towards Mai. He didn't say anything. Is he ignoring me? I follow his eyes and see Mai talking to that guy. She does like him! She just didn't want to tell me! I stomp over to him. At least people moved this time. "Stop talking to my girlfriend!"
He turned around. "Relax! Its just a party!" How can he be so chill about this? He just thinks he's so good! He talks to all the ladies and he's added Mai under his spell! I shove him away from Mai and he lands on a vase. Mai turns me around. "What is wrong with you?"
"What's wrong with me?" I asked.
"Your temper is out of control! You get angry at every little thing! You are so impatient and hotheaded!"
"Well, at least I feel something, unlike you! You have no passion for anything! You're just a big...blah!" I couldn't find any words to describe it. Mai thinks I'm out of control? "It's over, Zuko. We're through." I was so busy with my own thoughts, it took me a second to realize what she said. Well, that's fine! She didn't care anyway! She likes that Ruon guy! Chan walks up to me. "That's it! You're out of here!"
"I was just leaving," I said, quietly.
"Have fun by yourself, loser boy," Ruon-Jian said behind me. I slammed the door. I didn't want to be there anyway. I walk down the beach. That good-for-nothing party was boring anyway. As I get lost in my thoughts, I stop by a large rock. This was our vacation house. The place we used to come to all the time.
Father used to come here with us. Azula and I used to play in some grass that grew. Now, it seems like it was all a dream. I take the path to the house. I remember that Uncle used to come here sometimes too. On those days, we would all hang out together, with no worries, just us.
I pull the door handle. It doesn't budge. It must be locked. I kick the door down instead. All the stuff we left, is still here. Everything. Every picture and craft we made. Its all here. Even our family portrait. I used to watch the ocean. Father would watch it with me. I look away from the portrait. I glance under the portrait. That's when I find the rock with my handprint on it. I put my hand over the print. Mother gathered sand and made it wet. I'm not sure what she was trying to make but I put my hand in it. I glance at it a little longer.
I put it back and walk back downstairs. I sit on the path outside the house. "I knew I would find you here," Azula's voice said.
"Those summers seemed so long ago. So much has changed."
"Come on, this place is depressing," Azula said. I stand to follow Azula down to the beach. Those summers, together. They were so nice. If only we could still have those. Family vacations. My thoughts pause when I glance at Mai.
"Hey," she said.
"Where's your new boyfriend?" I asked. She didn't answer. "I'm freezing," Ty Lee says.
"I'll start a fire," I said. I look up to the house. "There's plenty of stuff to burn in there."
"Are you sure?" Ty Lee asked.
"I'm sure," I said, walking back up. Azula stays behind. I guess she doesn't like the memories returning to her. This house, its full of them. I grab a few paintings and then I take off the portrait. I take another glance at the stone before I leave. I throw them onto the floor and blast fire at it.
"What are you doing?" Ty Lee asked.
"What does it look like I'm doing?" I asked.
She looked into the fire. "But its a painting of your family." Of course it is. I know it is. I just don't want the memories returning. I don't want to remember. "You think I care?"
"I think you do," Ty Lee said.
"You don't know me, so why don't you mind your own business?" I yelled and walked away.
"I know you," Ty Lee said, scoffing.
"No, you don't!" I said, quickly turning around. "You are always stuck in your little 'Ty Lee world' where everything is happy all the time!"
"Zuko, leave her alone," Mai said. I ignored her. "'I'm so pretty. Look at me, I can walk on my hands. Whoo!'" I turn over to do handstand. "Yes, I'm a circus freak! Call me that all you want! Go ahead and laugh! Do you know why I joined the circus?" Ty Lee had a hint of sadness in her voice and tears were swelling up in her eyes. She's getting ready to tell a long story. I can just tell. "Here we go," Azula mumbled.
"Do you have any idea what my home was like? I grew up with six sisters who looked exactly like me. I didn't even have a name for myself!" She stood. "I joined the circus because I was scared of spending the rest of my life as a matched set. I'm different now! Everyone knows my name!"
"I guess that explains why you need ten boyfriends too," Mai said.
"What?" Ty Lee asked, annoyed.
"You have attention issues. You couldn't get enough while you were a kid so you are trying to make up for it."
"Well, what's your excuse, Mai?" Ty Lee returned. "You have been an only child for fifteen years and your aura is dingy and grey."
"I don't believe in auras," Mai said, crossing her arms.
"Yeah, you don't believe in anything," I said.
"Well, I'm sorry I can't be as crazy and as high-strung as the rest of you," Mai said.
"I'm sorry too, you know why? I wish you would be as high-strung as the rest of us instead of keeping your feelings bottled up inside! She just called your aura dingy. Are you going to take that?" I said, pointing at Mai.
"What do you want from me? A teary confession about how hard my childhood was? Well, it wasn't. I was a rich only child that got everything I wanted as long as I behaved. That included sitting still and not speaking unless I was spoken to. I had to stay out of trouble since we had my dad's political career to think about."
"That's it then," Azula said. "You had a controlling mother who had certain expectations from you. If you didn't do them, you would've been cut down. That's why you keep to yourself."
"You want me to express myself?" Mai stood. "Fine! Leave me alone!"
"My life hasn't been that easy either, Mai," I admitted.
"That doesn't excuse the way you've been acting," Mai said, looking away from me.
"Calm down, everyone! This much bad energy is bad for your skin," Ty Lee said.
"Bad skin?" I asked. "Only normal teenagers worry about 'bad skin'! I don't have that option. My father decided to teach me a lesson on my face!" I pointed to my left eye. "I'm sorry, Zuko. I-"
"For so long, I thought that if my dad accepted me, I would be happy. I'm back home and he finally talks to me. He even thinks I'm a hero! I should be happy now, finally getting what I always wanted, but I'm not! I'm just angrier than ever and I don't know why!"
"There is a question you need to answer then," Azula said. "Who are you angry at?"
"No one. I'm just angry," I said.
"She asked who you are angry at," Mai said.
"Everyone, I don't know," I said. If they keep asking that stupid question, I'm going to explode. "Is it dad?" Azula asked.
"No," I said.
"Your uncle?" Ty Lee suggested.
"Me?" Azula asked.
"No, no, no, no!" I said.
"Then who are you angry at?" Mai asked. I didn't reply. "Answer the question, Zuko," Azula demanded.
"Come on, talk to us," Ty Lee tried.
"Answer the question," Mai demanded as well.
"Answer it," Azula said.
I stand. "I'm angry at myself!" My fist slam onto the ground, causing the fire to turn into a pillar, shooting into the air. The fire died. I turned around. "Why?" Azula asked.
"Because I'm confused. I'm not sure if I know the difference between right and wrong anymore."
"You're pathetic," Azula said behind me. I know I'm pathetic. I can't choose my destiny. I can't choose my path. Uncle is mad at me. Father talks to me. He thinks I killed the Avatar. I'm a hero now but for what? Coming home? Falsely killing the Avatar? I can't just tell him!
"Well, those were wonderful performances, everyone," Azula clapped.
"I guess you wouldn't understand, would you, Azula. Because you are just so perfect," I said, turning around.
"Hm, well, yes. I guess you're right," she said, confidently. "I don't have sob stories like all of you. I can sit here and complain to you how mom liked Zuko more than me but I don't care. My own mother thought I was a monster." She paused. "She was right, of course, but it still hurt."
"What Lo and Li said were true! The beach does help us discover ourselves!" Ty Lee grabbed a rock from off the floor and rubbed it. "I feel all smoothed."
"You know what will make this vacation really memorable?" Azula asked.
"What?" Ty Lee asked. "More Kuai Ball?"
"No," Azula said. "We crash that party."
"Sounds good to me," Mai said.
"Sure," I said. "I didn't even want to go to that party anyway."
"Great, it's settled then. We crash the party," Azula said, smiling.
She led us back to the party house. She kicked the door down. "Bad news, Chan."
"Party's over," I said.
"W-what?" Chan asked.
Ty Lee knocked over a vase while I kicked a table in half. Some paintings were torn and Ty Lee knocked over two chandeliers. Chan starts crying like a baby while Azula sets the room on fire. "See ya, Chan. That was a great party," Azula smirks.
