A/N: Since I keep forgetting to put one. Anyway this to celebrate Valentine's Day, I know it's early but Valentine's Day is next monday so the chapter wouldn't have come out in time. And just for a little visual help this is the bouquet that Bucky gives to Tessa. Light of My Life Bouquet ( )
Tessa made sure she had all of the chocolate that she had bought in a bag; she and Nat had talked about doing something special for Steve by giving him a part of his childhood/young adult life and bought chocolate that had been around during his time. At first, Tessa wasn't sure if that was a good idea or not, but after she had overheard Steve and Bucky talking about how they missed things from back then, she had gotten the list off of Nat and gone out to get the chocolate for Bucky since as far as she knew he didn't have anyone for Valentine's Day. She put the last piece of candy in the bag that she had bought for him; she didn't know how much had changed since Bucky had probably first had them, but she hoped that he'd like them either way. Suddenly there was a knock on the door; Tessa walked over and opened the door. Bucky stood there in a pair of black pants, and from what she could see about two or three hoodies underneath his coat, what had her attention, though, was the bouquet he had in his right hand.
"Hey, Tess, sorry that I'm a bit late. The flower shop was packed, lots of guys getting flowers last minute, and of course it's Valentine's day, so they had a lot of orders that they had to get to people. I um, I got these for you." He said as he held the flowers out, a slight blush on his face. She could see that there were pink lilies, orange roses, hot pink carnations and what she would later find out was lavender colored cushion poms surrounded by greens.
"Oh, thank you, Bucky. You didn't have to get me anything." She said with a smile as she took the flowers. She gave them a quick sniff, a smile spreading on her face. She walked into the kitchen with Bucky close behind her; she grabbed the vase she used for flowers from time to time from the top of the fridge and put it on the counter before pulling a pair of knives out and cutting the flowers before placing them in the vase and putting water in it. She put it on the desk by her window and turned to him; she had a pink frilly dress on, there was a hole cut out in the shape of a heart on the chest. "I'm going to get started to dinner; just make yourself at home." She said before heading back into the kitchen. Bucky took his coat and hoodies off and hung them up before sitting on her couch and turning the television on. He flipped through a few channels before letting out a sigh and turning it off.
"Nothing on but a bunch of romantic movies." He called out to Tessa.
"I have some movies that we can watch, or we can listen to music if you want." She called out.
"Music's fine. I'm not really in the mood to watch any movies tonight. I'm kind of tired." He said as he leaned his head back.
"Nightmare's again?" she asked, poking her head around the corner with a concerned look.
"Yeah. Real bad one this time, and I got maybe an hour or two of sleep." He said with a yawn.
"Buck, you didn't have to come. I would have understood if you canceled." She said while turning back to the chicken she was preparing.
"Have I ever canceled on you?"
"No, but I don't want you to think that you need to push yourself for me."
"I already ordered the flowers two weeks ago, and I had to bring them to you anyway." He said with a shrug.
"Well then, in that case, I appreciate your efforts." She said before walking out and placing a kiss on his cheek. She turned back to the kitchen to finish up the chicken missing Bucky reaching out towards her as if he would pull her back over. After a few minutes, the chicken was ready, and they sat and ate while talking about what Valentine's Day had been like for both of them in the past when Tessa remembered her gift to Bucky that was staying cold in the fridge. "I almost forgot. Give me a second." She said before getting up and opening her fridge before pulling the bag out. Bucky raised an eyebrow at her and looked up at her as if to ask her what it was, and she shrugged. "I stole the idea from Nat. She thought it would be nice to get Steve a bunch of candy and chocolate that you guys would be familiar with." She watched Bucky open the bag, and he pulled out a Payday; he looked at the chocolate bar and then up to her before looking back down at the chocolate and opening the packaging up. She watched him take a small bite of it before chewing on it for a little bit, his eyes went wide slightly, and he looked down at the chocolate bar in his hand.
"This is good! I haven't had chocolate in forever!" he said before taking another bite. Tessa watched as he devoured it with a laugh and dug in his bag for more "M&M's. I only got a chance to eat these a few times." He said as he opened the bag up. She watched him dump a handful in before he popped them all in his mouth.
"Did the chicken not fill you up?" she asked; usually, she'd give him the biggest helping of whatever she made since he burned off what an average person did before leaving her apartment.
"Did, but you're going to tell me that you don't have room for candy?" he asked before looking for more. He pulled out two Baby Ruths and held one out to her.
"Those are for you."
"Yeah, but I didn't get you any chocolate, so I'm going to share these." For the next half, an hour or so, the two of them sat there and munched on the chocolate before there were a few left that Bucky was going to take home with him. While they were talking, Bucky had told her stories about growing up during that time, and he even said to her that he was sure that the chocolate had gotten better since then. Bucky and Tessa were sitting on her couch watching the animated version of The Lion King; Bucky had an arm around her as she sat there and sniffled while Simba called out for help upon finding his father's body. "How many times have you watched this?" he asked as he gently rubbed her arm.
"Too many to count. But this always gets me." She said as she wiped the tears away. He had to admit that it was sad, and then Scar walked over and guilted Simba into running away before sending the hyenas after him.
"What the hell?" Bucky said as he watched Simba run for his life.
"Scar wants to be king, and Simba's in the way because technically Simba's the new king. You realize that the male lion will kill all of the cubs in real life because they want their bloodline to be the only one, and they don't want the male cubs to challenge him later."
"Well, Simba's going to get his revenge, right?"
"Just watch the movie, Buck."
Tessa laughed as she saw the look of shock on Bucky's face. "The hyenas ate him." He whispered.
"They were hungry." She said with a laugh. Bucky slowly turned and looked at her.
"Tessa, this is supposed to be a kid's movie!"
"You don't see them eating him."
"I'm sure any kid knows what just happened to Scar. It doesn't take someone with a big imagination to figure it out."
"Am I hearing this right? The guy that lived through World War II is freaking out over cartoon hyenas eating a cartoon lion."
"I saw a bunch of shit during the War but not this." He said, waving his hand at the screen that now had the credits running.
"Well, you weren't in Africa. Maybe you would have seen that then." She said as she finished up the glass of champagne she had bought for the day.
"If I had, I would have gone home after Steve rescued me."
"If you did, you wouldn't have met me and Nat and Sam and everyone else." Bucky stopped when she said that. She had a point, what would his life have been like if he hadn't fallen off the train? Would he have gotten married, would he have had children and grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren? What about a job? "Bucky? Bucky? Hey. Earth to James Barnes." Tessa said as she waved a hand in front of his face; he blinked and turned to her with a grin.
"What?" he asked, and she laughed.
"You zoned out on me. Again." His smile faded, and he looked down.
"I'm sorry."
"It's fine. I didn't want you to have a flashback or anything."
"Nah, just daydreaming." Tessa let out a gasp and put her head and her hands.
"Really? Bout what?"
"Nothing. Doesn't matter. It's never going to happen." He said while shaking his head.
"How do you know?"
"Really, Tess? Come on. We both know that with my history, it's never going to happen." She stared at him in confusion before it slowly dawned on her. "It's getting late. I'm going to get headed home." He started heading toward the door before he stopped and turned back to the kitchen, mumbling something about his chocolate and candy before opening the fridge and pulling the bag out. He held it close to his chest, giving Tessa the stink eye the whole time before walking back to the now open door. She just rolled her eyes and held the door open for him.
"Well, I don't know about you, but I had a nice night. Thanks for the flowers, Buck."' She said before getting up on her tiptoes and kissing his cheek. He cleared his throat and quickly pulled his hoodies and coat back on.
"Yeah, it was nice. Thanks for the candy." He said while waving the bag. He walked out into the hallway and down the stairs. Neither one of them took their eyes off of each other, and both of them had smiles on their face.
