Chapter Three
Dazed and Distracted can't you Tell
Here is a short but informative chapter.
The bell rings as a set of triplets enter the shop.
"Bonjour mademoiselles, and what can I do for you today?" greeted Adam.
"Bonjour, we are here to pick up an order of fabric." answered the eldest, Claudette. As Adam went to retrieve their order, Belle came up from the workshop to see the transaction take place.
"That's a lot more fabric than you usually order." She notes
"Yes, well mother expects to be drowned in orders with the ball coming up." Laurette idly replies.
"The ball?"
"Well surely you've heard." insisted Paullette.
"Of course she hasn't, she is always too busy with her nose buried in a book." Claudettte said snidely.
"King Claude-Francois has sent out an invitation to his nephew, the neighboring King Christopher, and his new bride, and is holding a ball upon their arrival, where he will make an announcement." Laurette informed her.
"An announcement?" Belle asked intrigued.
"If you ask me, the King is going to officially name King Christopher as his heir." Paulette leaned in.
"Doesn't he have children of his own?" Belle asked
"He had a son and daughter with the late Queen Maria-Eleanor (1), may she rest in peace." Claudette confirmed.
"But they haven't been seen in ten years." continued Laurette
"And rumor has it that they succumbed to the same illness as their mother." finished Paulette.
"A stable boy we dated, told us that the King has been searching for a new wife for years."
"But no one wants to marry off their daughters to him because he is seen as cursed."
"So why arrange this now?" Belle asked
"He doesn't view his nephew as his ideal heir."
"Not that we blame him."
"Marrying a serving girl honestly."
"Here you go ladies." Adam returned. Though this time his politeness seemed slightly forced. "Do you need any more help with that?"
"No, thank you." answered Claudette as she set down the money. "Our mother's workers can handle everything else. Good day monsieur."
"Good day." he returned, leaving Belle to ponder everything she had heard.
