Beginning A/N: And we are back, faithful readers, with another chapter of The Avatar and the Ed! I've really been working out the finer details for this chapter, as this is the one where Ed begins his training to become a powerful warrior. You'll probably recognize most of the events in this chapter, as I did use an episode of Avatar The Last Airbender as a guideline. Though, there are a few differences. You'll see them as you read. So, I hope that you all enjoy!
Disclaimer: I still don't own Avatar The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, Eragon, or Ed, Edd n' Eddy!
The silhouette of a man appears. He stomps on the ground which sends a boulder up out of the earth, and kicks it away.
Earth…
A young woman performs acrobatic flips while releasing flames from her hands and feet.
Fire…
A young boy with a shaved head lands on the ground and sends out a cyclone.
Air…
A young woman uses push and pull movements to manipulate a glob of water before sending a wave of water at the screen as we cut to a large map of an entire country.
Water…
Each of the four nations, the Air Nomads, the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, and the Fire Nation was shown on the map represented by different colors. White for the Air Temples, icy blue for the Water Tribes, beige for the Earth Kingdom, and fiery red for the Fire Nation.
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked!
The camera quickly panned down to show the actual landscape of the Earth Kingdom, filled with great mountains and lush forests… but on the shore was a fleet of iron ships where Fire Nation soldiers disembarked and used their Firebending to destroy everything in sight.
Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most he vanished.
Avatar Roku is seen bending the elements of water, earth, fire, and air as he stands atop a stone pillar… before he vanishes into thin air.
A hundred years have passed and my brother and I have learned who the new Avatar is. My own twin sister, Korra. Unfortunately, like me, she's a waterbending novice. And yet… she's not alone in terms of being a bringer of balance.
Katara watches in awe as her sister enters the Avatar State, an undeniable sign that she truly is the Avatar. Both sisters look up as they hear a roar and see a young man, about their age, flying overhead on the back of a mighty dragon.
While we were exploring back home, we met a young man around our age. A man named Ed who proved to be one of the last of the Dragon Riders. An ancient group of warriors who helped the Avatar maintain the balance of the world. And much like my sister, Korra, Ed has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone.
As Korra performs the Water Whip while in her regular state, Ed goes through several fighting movements using his sword as he proves that even a nonbender can be a lethal enemy. …Right before Korra accidentally smacked herself in the butt with her Water Whip, yelping as she stumbled forward and bumped into Ed who smacked into a rock wall before falling flat on his back.
"Head stayed on, Katara." said Ed.
The odds may be stacked against them, but I haven't lost hope. I believe that, united… Ed and Korra can save the world!
Ed and Korra look out over the land as they stand at the edge of a cliff, both looking more serious than they've ever been in their lives. They had resolved then and there to stop the machinations of the Fire Lord and finally end the war.
Hatching a Dragon!
After Ed had taken a moment to gather what few marbles, he still had he stood up and noticed that he was no longer at the amusement park where he, Eddy, and Double Dee had just been accepted by the kids of the cul-de-sac after they had beaten Eddy's brother and Eddy apologized for his scam gone wrong. Now, he found himself standing in a ruined city that he vaguely remembered learning about in history class. And he was constantly failing in that class. Along with English. And Math. And Social Studies.
…Where was he going with this again?
Anyway, Ed cracked a smile as he looked around and started walking down a random path.
"This place reminds me of the Aztec temples, like the ones from episode twenty-three of 'I Was A Teenage Blood Serpent!', the second season." Ed commented.
As Ed continued his walk, he took time to stop periodically to look closer at the carvings in the stone walls and examine the various monuments that mostly seemed to revolve around dragons and fire. As he did, he felt as if the gears in his head were slowly but surely beginning to turn much smoother than they ever had before. His thinking began to become clear as he thought less and less about things like monster movies and comic books. And he honestly felt… dare he say… smarter? He knew he wasn't a genius by any means, that's Double Dee's territory, but he certainly felt smart enough to be considered normal by society's standards.
Either his brain's development is finally catching up to him, or he hit his head on those rocks harder than he thought.
Ed continued to walk through the ruins that he had found himself in and actually wished that he could write down his findings so that he could share them with Eddy and Double Dee when he finally got back home. Speaking of which, he idly wondered what that orb was and how it ended up in his jacket pocket in the first place. He had never picked it up during his and the others' trip to Eddy's big brother's place. So, where did it come from?
He would have to find answers to those particular questions later.
As the usually dimwitted Ed-Boy walked along the seemingly abandoned ruins he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. As if there were predators nearby, and he was the prey. So, he kept his guard up as best he could, but this led to a lapse in situational awareness, and he ended up pulling a tripwire that caused a large square section of the floor in front of Ed to sink and reveal sharp spikes sticking out of the ground! Ed yelped and stumbled a bit, but fortunately caught himself before he could fall forward.
"I can't believe this! The past is trying to kill me!" yelped Ed.
After taking a moment to calm down and get over his near impalement experience, Ed took a moment to kneel down and really examine the trap. It had to be at least hundreds of years old, and it still worked! That just meant that there was more to discover around here. More to learn, and maybe something that could help him find his way home. But for now, he had to get past this trap. Taking a deep breath, he took several steps back and ran at the pit before taking a literal leap of faith and landing perfectly on the other side. Having cleared that obstacle, Ed looked up at what must be the central tower.
He narrowed his eyes. People don't make traps, especially ones as deadly as that one, unless they have something worth protecting. So, he pressed on.
As Ed continued his trek through the seemingly abandoned city, he continued to mentally document his findings. Restoration work would need to be conducted on many of the ancient carvings that were etched into the walls. Ascending a flight of stairs, he came across one carving in particular that really seemed to show something about the culture. They depicted a human facing two dragons in what must have been combat. But the human was surrounded by flames.
"I'm no expert, but I think that the people who once lived here had some sort of deep connection with dragons. But dragons are just a myth. …Aren't they?" Ed thought to himself.
These ruins were becoming more and more mysterious as the day went on. Ed just didn't understand any of it. And he couldn't really focus on anything with all of these questions burning in his mind. Where was he? How did he get there? And why was he feeling so much smarter than he should be? He knew that when he pushed the button on that strange orb that he was transported to another place, but still, he knows nothing about it. It reminds him so much about the Aztecs in terms of architecture, and yet there is clear influence from Chinese culture and mythology.
Ed took a few more steps towards another path… and screamed as the ground gave out from beneath him causing him to fall into some sort of hidden chamber! He landed with a hard thud and groaned at the pain in his back. Normally, while these types of falls would indeed hurt for a moment, he and his fellow kids of the cul-de-sac would recover relatively quickly. This time, there was still a dull throbbing in his back. He'd have to look into that later.
Rubbing his back, he stood up and looked around seeing that he was in what appeared to be an empty storage room. The light from above illuminated the room somewhat, so at least he could see. There were some old weapons that were in remarkably good condition, what appeared to be ceremonial armor that was likely worn by warriors who went into battle, but what really stood out to him was something on a large, golden pedestal. It looked like a large, purple stone that shined like amethyst in the dim light, It was oval shaped and around the size of a small watermelon. He didn't know why, but Ed was drawn to this strange stone like a moth to a flame. The previously dimwitted Ed-Boy walked up to the pedestal with curiosity shining in his eyes as he examined the 'stone' with great interest. Eventually, he picked it up and, surprisingly, could feel warmth coming from it.
"It feels… almost alive." he observed.
He kept the stone close to him as he went back to the spot where he had landed and sat down. He figured that if he stayed in one place and kept calm, he could figure a way out.
But many hours later, night had fallen upon the ruined city and Ed was now laying on his back in resignation. The stone had since rolled a few feet away from him as he just stared up at the now starry sky. Hearing a familiar rumble and the faint sound of bongo drums, Ed knew one thing.
"Yup. Belly's empty." he said.
Opening up his jacket he reached in and pulled out a bag of jerky that he had forgotten that he packed. He figured that if he rationed it out, he would last a little longer than he would without it, but he would also need clean drinking water. Otherwise, he was likely to die from dehydration. Swallowing a piece of jerky, Ed sighed and looked up at the hole in the roof as he pondered how he was going to get out.
"I sure wish that Eddy and Double Dee were here right now. They'd know what to do." Ed said to himself.
Ed was broken from his thoughts when he heard a small thumping sound. He snapped to attention and looked around as he tried to pinpoint the source of the sound. Could it have been a wild animal come to make this cavern its home? Possibly. He wouldn't rule out the possibility of bears or mountain lions making their home in a cave like this one, especially in a ruined city that's been abandoned for who knows how long. But at the same time, he thought it was impossible as he had seen no other entry or exit points to this chamber. So, how would they get in and out? He heard the little thumps again and saw movement in his peripheral. The purple stone that he had found was moving, bulging in certain places…
And with a loud 'CRACK' the 'stone' practically exploded to reveal a small creature in its place!
Small warbles could be heard from the creature as it slowly blinked open its eyes and flailed its limbs around, obviously not used to being out of its shell. Seeing this miracle of nature, Ed found himself unable to stop the big old grin that appeared on his face.
"That was no stone… it was an egg!" he gasped in awe. "Oh, just look at you…!"
He knelt down as the creature managed to flip itself off of its back and onto its belly as it stood on shaky limbs. It had a long neck on a stocky body and four limbs. A long tail grew from the base of the creature's spine, and it had a pair of wings with a familiar arm and finger bone structure, along with a pair of small stumps growing from the back of its head which the lad assumed to be the beginning of small horns. It was covered in scales that glittered like shards of the purest amethyst, and its eyes were a stunning crimson red. On its head was the beginning of three small spikes. It had tiny talons on each foot that were a very deep midnight blue that appeared almost black at first glance, its hands having three fingers and a thumb while its feet had three toes and a spur. Its head was roughly triangular in shape, and Ed could see two fangs that slightly jutted out of the upper lip and over the bottom.
The creature took a few clumsy steps forward, and looked up at Ed with big, adorable eyes.
"What are you?" he asked as she knelt down.
The creature flared out its wings with a loud, gurgly screech causing Ed to fall back on his rear, but the smile never left his face. He just kept his eyes on the strange creature as it seemed to be inspecting him.
"Well… You're not a bird." he observed.
The dragon folded its wings as it seemed to shy away a little. Ed gently made quiet shushing noises as he slowly reached his hand out towards the… he was convinced… baby dragon. The hatchling halted in its tracks and seemed able to sense that Ed wasn't a threat. As his outstretched right hand grew closer to the hatchling, the dragonling closed the distance and placed its head on Ed's palm.
A bright flash of blue light suddenly filled the cave! And that was the last thing that Ed remembered before blacking out.
***To Be Continued…***
