A/N: I've been reading more than writing and it shows. Took me a few tries to actually get a coherent plot out of this crossover. This also takes place in the same universe as Good Intentions, Horrible Execution. All you need to know going into this is that Iemitsu is competent, Daemon is an asshole and Massimo survived but no longer has Sky flames.
Disclaimer: I don't own Katekyo Hitman Reborn or Servamp. One of the cats in an earlier story being named Kuro was purely coincidental, I'm just not very original with pet names.
Unexpected Bonds
When Miharu had visited his cousin in the hospital, Tsuna's body was covered in bandages. He was hooked up to a heart monitor and an IV drip. His aunt Nana's warm smile was gone, holding onto one of Tsuna's hands. The teen cleared his throat. "Aunt Nana." She looked up, her eyes red and shoulders slumped. "Why? Why would someone do something like this to my Tsu-kun?" She asks, her lip quivering.
Kuro had popped his head out of Mahiru's hoodie and scrunched up his nose. The room smelled strongly of bleach and disinfectant, irritating the cat's nose. Mahiru was blunt, as always. "Did he say anything about being bullied?" He asks, Nana sniffed. "He never said anything but sometimes he would come home with a limp or he'd be insistent on doing his own laundry. I thought that he was just clumsy."
In a way, Mahiru could understand why Tsuna never mentioned it. Despite being married, Nana's husband rarely visited and she raised Tsuna all by herself. He likely didn't want to seem like a burden. "Mom?" Tsuna's voice was hoarse, if the room hadn't been silent they wouldn't have heard him. "Tsu-kun, you're awake!" Nana sobbed.
Tsuna opened his eyes, squinting at his bright surroundings. He couldn't feel anything after his brush with death and hoped it was pain medication. He tried turning his head, seeing someone from the corner of his eye. Miharu walked over to Nana's side. "Hey Tsuna. Long time no see."
The ten year old's expression brightened, his eyes taking an orange tint. "Miharu-nii!" He remembered his current condition and coughed in embarrassment. "Sorry you couldn't see us under better circumstances. How are you and Kuro doing?" He asks, Mahiru looked surprised. Now he knew how his friends felt whenever he made himself the last priority. "Tsuna, you almost died."
Tsuna flinched at the harsh tone. "I'm sorry." He muttered, wishing he could hide under the blanket. Nana's expression darkened. "No Tsuna, you shouldn't apologize for what happened. While I'm hurt you didn't say anything about the bullying, you didn't throw yourself down that ravine. It took two hours for Hibari-san to find you after your teacher failed to notice you went missing." Her frame was shaking with repressed rage. If the teen hadn't sent the children bragging about hurting her precious baby into the hospital himself, Nana would have raised hell herself.
Unable to stand his cousin's kicked puppy look, Mahiru grabbed Kuro out of his hood. They needed something to lighten the somber mood. "You can see how Kuro is doing yourself. Be careful with him." He warns. The lazy cat sniffed at the teen before giving a loud purr. So warm. Kuro thought, curling up beside Tsuna.
Much to Tsuna's surprise he actually had visitors other than his family. Kyoko had stopped by with her brother, giving him a gift basket and wishing him a speedy recovery. "What those classmates of yours did was extremely wrong. I'm not too good at school work but we can tackle it together." Ryohei offers, Tsuna eyed the school work he missed and groaned. "Can't I just be a NEET?" Tsuna complains, Kuro could sympathize.
Tsuna's swift recovery from the accident was considered a miracle by the hospital staff. His medical records from the school nurse would note that while he had a weak immune system that physical injuries healed swiftly. Doctors were monitoring his latest fever, his temperature at 101.2 degrees and climbing. As much as Nana hated to admit it, Namimori was a toxic town that was slowly killing her son. She broke down in the hospital waiting room, calling two of the most important men in her life.
Neither of them were thrilled, especially Iemitsu when he learned how his agents in Namimori had slacked off. He slammed a fist on his desk, startling one of his agents. "Something wrong boss?" Cinnamon asks, wincing at the remains of the unfortunate furniture. "It seems your fellow agents have forgotten how civilians can be just as dangerous as a criminal. My son was almost killed by a group of brats."
Iemitsu hadn't visited his family in years to prevent the only viable heir from being targeted like the others. Cinnamon knew his boss would rather be there in person to make the children that hurt his son disappear. "Is it the same Mist from before?" The culprit had shown the ability to take over even the most skilled flame users to attack the other heirs.
Iemitsu gritted his teeth. "That or the seal on my son was botched in some way. Either way Namimori is no longer the safe haven I hoped it would be. My wife suggested letting him move in with his older cousin in the city."
Cinnamon winced. As one of the few agents trusted with information about Iemitsu's private life, he knew his boss wasn't on good terms with his brother-in-law. He'd seen one of his sisters with a husband prioritizing work before family and didn't want the same for Nana. The couple had to elope to Namimori and by the time her brother learned of this it was too late to interfere.
"That's a lot of unknown variables boss." Cinnamon states, Iemitsu sighed. "I can't allow an oversight like this again. That's why I'm assigning you and Cayene to protect my son until further notice."
"But boss-" "Enough Cinnamon! You both have improved yourselves since your last failure. And with recent developments it seems Lal and I need to touch up our training methods."
Cinnamon shivered at the predatory gleam in Iemitsu's eyes. There was a reason he was called the Young Lion.
