A/N: Clearly, I found the next chapter of this story! Sadly this is the last chapter I had managed to write of this story that had made any sense, but I'll keep my eyes out for any chapters from my other stories. Thanks to all of those who have commented such kind things, and who went out of their way to review the chapters I've posted. I always felt like these chapters were bad when I was going through a hard time, which was one of the reasons I didn't post them back when I first created them. Love you all :)
Chapter 15
Rosalie was so close to destroying another phone; the only thing that stopped her was Tanya's voice on the other line.
"I know she's doing this on purpose! That cocky, annoyingly gorgeous..." Rosalie trailed off with a hiss as her gaze darted around the room, needing to find something to break. However, unless she wanted to make a very suspicious clearing by breaking all of the trees, there was nothing she could destroy.
"Deep breaths Rosalie, you need to breathe," Tanya tried coaxing, but truly felt helpless from so far away.
"I don't even need to breathe!" Rosalie exclaimed, so angry that she couldn't think about why Tanya was trying to make her breathe in the first place. "That damned mutt won't be breathing either once I finally get my hands around that infuriatingly sexy neck of hers! I thought we were getting somewhere, and now she dares avoid me like this? She even sent her little mutt followers along the border, she hasn't done it herself since we last met!"
"There may be a reason…"
"I'm sorry Tanya I have to go." With that, Rosalie ended the call, and Tanya felt herself growing even more worried. Before anyone else in the coven said anything, they knew she had decided to head to Forks immediately. Rosalie needed her too much.
Rosalie, furious and desperate, barely remembered to shove her phone into her pocket as she whirled towards the scent of wet dog. They were coming now, most likely patrolling the border. Knowing she was so closed to running into one of the wolves, even one that wasn't her mate, Rosalie had to see them. See them, and demand answers immediately.
The blonde vampire burst through the forest just in time, surprising two wolves. Jacob and Paul both whirled and snarled, mainly because they were startled, and Rosalie's emotions were so amped up she hissed right back.
Of course, that served to make things worse. Both wolves crouched, preparing for a fight, not sure how they would even explain what happened to their Alpha when they got back, not even sure how to protect themselves from the black eyed vampire in a way that wouldn't make Bella go crazier.
Despite her state, Rosalie managed to pull herself together, ending the stand off. She didn't bother hiding her anger as she said, "Where the hell is Bella? I need to see her; now."
The two wolves exchanged eye contact, not willing to completely let go of their own hostility either.
What do we say? Paul asked, not just to Jacob, but to anyone else currently wolf.
What can we say? Jacob replied, both frustrated and concerned. Bella was on such a tight leash, and regardless of his personal opinions of the bitchy vampire, he didn't want to fuck things up worse. He still hurt from the last time Bella kicked his ass for suggesting a complete rebellion against the Elders.
This is our chance to do something, Embry said thoughtfully as he and Colin ran along the other side of their territory. We can help Bella somehow, right? This could be our only chance.
Rosalie didn't like seeing the silent communication, hearing the grumbling and whining between the two wolves and who knows how many more.
"Well? Answer me," Rosalie ordered.
Paul's lips skimmed back from his teeth, and he couldn't stop himself from growling at the vampire, who growled right back. Whatever happens, I'm not dealing with the bitch. Somebody better figure out what to do, and quick.
Jared is with Bella… Jacob let out a whine, fighting between the urge to help his alpha and friend, and the need to get permission from Jared or Bella first. His love for his friend won out. Screw it, I'm gonna say something. We can't stay in this situation forever, and Bella needs help. All the blame is on me.
No Jacob, Sam said, startling everyone as he spoke the moment he shifted to wolf.
Jacob snarled in reply, and while it was at Sam, Rosalie was ready to jump across the border and wring answers out of the wolf's furry, mangy neck.
Don't try to stop me Sam! Jacob growled, tensing. Shit, the vampire looked ready to kill him, was it even safe to shift back?
You want Bella to keep suffering? Paul added with a snarl of his own.
I'm not stopping you. Sam's answer surprised everyone, enough for all of the wolves to relax. I'm heading to Jared now to update him. You do what you need to do, but the blame will fall on me if anyone gets upset we didn't wait for orders. We need to put an end to this; Bella is our alpha; not the Elders. One way or another, we need to help her and show the Elders who really is in charge of us.
Hell yeah! All of the present wolves cheered, renewed with a fire that only Bella could truly light for them.
Jacob's suddenly wolfy grin caught Rosalie completely off guard, to the point she didn't even think to protest when he went bounding into the forest. Before she could demand answers from the remaining wolf, she heard someone, no longer on four paws but on two feet, running back.
Oh, great. It was that annoying puppy from the time they met in town. Rosalie really didn't have time to verbally spar with the damned dog.
"Bella can't see you," Jacob announced as he returned to the clearing, having hurried so much he was still pulling on his pants.
Just like that, Rosalie was in a crouch, ready to launch herself at Jacob and tear into him for daring to say such a thing. She would have, too, if someone else hadn't run into the clearing at that moment.
"I want to help," Leah announced as she burst out of the trees, right between the two boys and the vampire. Leah glanced over at Jacob and Paul with a glare, looking ready to fight them herself. "I don't give a damn what Sam or anyone else tells you to do, the leech needs an explanation. Or do you want Bella to keep being a moody pain in the ass? Because she's only going to get worse, and—"
"Leah, we're trying to help too." That was all Jacob had to say, and Leah shut up. "Sam encouraged us. We all decided we had to do something, damn the consequences."
"Oh." Leah's muscles relaxed, and she looked around in embarrassment as she realized how foolish she had to look. Doing her best to shake it off, she squared her shoulders and said, "I'm still here to help, damn it. Everyone knows you can't leave it to you two block heads anyways."
"Can someone just fucking explain already?" Rosalie demanded, on her last shred of patience. The wolves took one look at her, and realized just how insane the blonde had become. They really had better start explaining.
So they did. They explained about the Elders and their attitude, how frustrating the old bastards were being, their belief system, how that and Bella's building unstable emotions, stemming from how she was fighting the bond, had led to Bella being put on watch. They made sure to explain how much the Elders hate vampires, and how the news of Bella's mate being a vampire wouldn't go over well. They told Rosalie absolutely everything.
The entire time, Rosalie had grown inhumanly still. She didn't even blink as her eyes turned to the blackest black any of the wolves had ever seen. If their wolves hadn't recognized Rosalie as their Alpha's mate, they would've been struggling not to react to what was clearly an extremely emotional, dangerous vampire.
"I never thought Bella was the type to put up with that," Rosalie said at long last, her voice emotionless. "She doesn't seem the type to listen to anyone." Maybe Bella was going along with this simply so she wouldn't have to risk seeing Rosalie? After their last encounter, Rosalie hoped she was wrong, but the idea still seemed credible...and it hurt. The idea that Bella would avoid her to that degree made Rosalie's dead heart hurt in a way that shouldn't have been possible.
"You're mostly right," Jacob said with a shrug, trying to play off how uncomfortable and tense the vampire made him. "But there's one thing Bella would do anything for."
"Who?" Immediately, unwillingly, Rosalie immediately believed it was another girl. Her possessiveness flared at the idea, and she wanted to tear into this hypothetical woman with a hatred Rosalie had never felt before. Thankfully, Jacob's next words derailed her.
"Charlie. That's her dad," Jacob explained. How much should Jacob say now? He felt like he had to explain why Bella would do anything for her adoptive dad, so they would understand how much Charlie meant to Bella. But the story of the two's meeting was something only Charlie, Jacob, and Bella knew; no one else had ever been told about that day. The reservation only knew that was the day Charlie adopted Bella. The Elders only knew that Bella had been found by Charlie. He just couldn't tell anyone, even Bella's imprint, without Bella's permission. So he just said, "her adoptive dad, actually. Charlie is an Elder too, and Bella doesn't want to cause unnecessary trouble for him." Well, too much unnecessary trouble, anyways. There was a limit of trouble, a line she won't cross. When Bella was only seven years old, she had made a promise to Charlie; no committing felonies.
Two years later, another incident happened, and Bella had to make her father another promise; no tribe uprisings, no coups, no attempting to overthrow any kind of government. And, of course, the final promise; never do anything that would make Bella unable to stay at the Rez. It had been a promise made out of love, out of fear that Bella would do something that would make her banned from the Rez the moment she was of age, possibly even earlier. Charlie didn't want Bella to lose the one place she felt stable, the one place she considered a home. Sadly, in moments like this, it had become shackles for Bella.
"I see." Rosalie didn't understand at all, but she could tell, even in her fury, that she couldn't push it. "So. Does this mean you're going to help me kidnap Bella? You better at least stay out of my way."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Jacob exclaimed, completely caught off guard. He wasn't the only one.
"What the hell made you jump to kidnapping, Blondie?" Leah demanded, just as stunned.
Holy shit. This girl might actually be a badass, Paul thought, thoroughly impressed.
"You can't honestly expect me to stay away from her, can you?" Rosalie crossed her arms over her chest, glaring back at the mutts who were supposed to be helping her. "What else do you expect me to do?"
"Not that!" Leah retorted. "Gods, of course Bella would be mated to a psycho." After a roll of her eyes in response to Rosalie's hiss, Leah added, "How about this?. I'll give you my number so we can stay in contact. For now, just cool the hell down. We can try to think up something together."
That's when Jared came out of the forest, Sam at his side. Both looked serious, troubled, and both were sporting a few obvious, already healing bruises. Both boys looked like shit. "How about we try my idea first?"
All it took was one sniff, and Rosalie could smell it; Bella. For whatever reason, her scent was all over the two boys, and she almost shivered with the longing that overcame her. Instead, she closed her eyes. Remembering Tanya's words, Rosalie took a deep breath, calming herself down. When she finally opened her eyes, they were back to a golden hue.
"I'm listening."
