Chapter 5 Abby
Seattle wasn't the best place, Abby knew that when she convinced everyone in her group to head there, but she just couldn't give up on potentially saving both Lev and Yara. She also hoped she could be a more positive influence on Isaac this time around, last time she had been his more than willing enforcer. Though her group had been impressed with her fighting skills on the road, Isaac still demanded that she went through training. No doubt it had been due to her fathers' influence. Isaac had been immediately happy that a doctor of his quality showed up and would do everything he could to ensure Dr. Jerry Anderson willingly stayed. The same went for her dad's star pupils, Nora and Mel. Abby enjoyed the training though, she excelled in every way. Her relationship with Owen had reached the next level, especially after he discovered the Aquarium this time around. It became their secret little love nest, well until one day her dad had followed them there and then proceeded to give them both the most embarrassing safe sex lecture one could possibly imagine. Since he seemed to enjoy it Abby just knew he did it on purpose.
Seattle wasn't any different, there had been a fragile peace at best a few years before they arrived. Abby felt conflicted about the killing at first. While her notoriety as a fighter against the infected grew, she was also known to avoid fighting against the seraphites. It caused her plan to positively influence Isaac to backfire. Increasingly it was Jerry that had to be the voice of reason. At least major conflict could be avoided which kept the people generally safe. As the years passed they all got more integrated into the WLF, just like last time. Oftentimes due to the fact that they remained close, they were still referred to as the Salt Lake crew. Ellie and the dark haired goddess stayed on Abby's mind, so much so that it had started having a negative effect on her relationship with Owen as time passed. Owen had started remarking on it that she made less private time for just them. Abby felt guilty about it, she wanted to make it work but couldn't get those two women out of her mind. They didnt have sex as often anymore, mostly because she rarely was in the mood for having sex with him, when they did have sex then lately her thoughts were elsewere. Regardless she was surprised when she arrived back from a mission to clear infected from an area to find Owen waiting in their stadium suite with seemingly his stuff packed.
"Owen what is this?" Abby asked.
"Who is this Ellie girl you are seeing?" Owen asked, ignoring Abby's question.
"I'm not seeing anyone but you." She said but it was clear Owen didn't believe her, likely due to her blushing when he said Ellie's name.
"Don't lie to me Abby you've said her name when we had sex before you left on your mission. We've been growing apart for a while but I'm not going to stand by while you see other people, I just can't." Owen growled, "You should have told me when you started questioning your sexuality instead of cheating on me."
The break up had been hard for a while but Abby found it difficult to stay angry at him, not even when he started dating Mel after a couple of months. The first time around she had revenge on her mind, this time she had Ellie and the other girl on her mind. She really had thought they could make it work this time around but saying Ellie's name in her sleep was pretty bad. Manny had moved into the suite in Owen's place. Given she had extra time on her hands now that she was no longer in a relationship, Abby started making preparations for leaving Seattle and started caching supplies outside the city along with a truck she got working. It would be a tight fit but they would just have to manage. She couldn't risk raising suspicion by stealing more parts from the motor pool along with asking more advice from the mechanics. The sensible thing would be to leave as soon as possible and maybe she should get her dad and friends out now. But the overwhelming part of her couldn't leave until she rescued Lev and Yara. She wish it would be an option to head to the Seraphite island but knew that it would be a suicide mission.
It was by now early summer 2037, the WLF had just fought a series of battles that allowed them to gain the upper hand against the Seraphites. Abby was eating dinner with her dad in the canteen area when they heard a familiar voice.
"Well hello Jerry, I did not expect to find you here. Imagine my surprise when I found out." Marlene said.
Abby's eyes grew big and she tried to hide the shock on her face by looking back at her tray.
"Marlene, this is a surprise." Jerry said, clearly also shocked.
"I was disappointed when I got back to St Mary's that you left us along with all those others." Marlene said, her tone hostile.
"You have to understand Marlene, morale was low and then we heard about this place where we could make a difference." Jerry said, trying to be diplomatic.
"Oh I know we can make a difference here, that's why I'm in talks with Isaac." Marlene said before walking away with a smug smile on her face.
It didn't take long for the news to be announced officially, even though the WLF was winning the war currently, there was no way Isaac could say no to the amount of trained experienced fighters Marlene was bringing him. Isaac remained in command of Seattle, Marlene was in command of operations outside Seattle, which would increase once the scars were dealt with they announced. Abby suspected that Marlene still managed to heavily influence Isaac, her and her friends were increasingly sent on more dangerous missions. Even they started noticing it and felt like they were being punished by Marlene. She had reached her breaking point in December when they in the previous timeline would have left to go search for Jackson. Isaac had decided that the lower floors of the lake view hospital needed to be cleared. Manny had been the most vocal about it, especially voicing his opinions while they got ready..
"What is it lately that we are being sent on suicide missions?" he grunted.
"Marlene has Isaac wrapped around her finger and she wants us dead." Abby replied with a sigh.
"But why?" Manny complained.
"Revenge for leaving the fireflies? It's obvious she hates our guts. Look I have a bad feeling about this, let's pack extra ammo and explosives." Abby said as she grabbed her shotgun and loaded it with slugs, knowing what was awaiting them in those lower floors needed to be hit hard.
She packed the heaviest loadout she could, knowing that they'd have to deal with the abomination that lived in the lowest floor, carrying small caliber weapons was pointless. That abomination was something she truly feared, the first time she dealt with it, she had barely made it. This time around there had been more infected, as best as she tried she had been unable to protect everybody. Nick had gotten bitten by a clicker that came out of nowhere after they were leaving through the parking garage cheerful from defeating the rat king as Manny had dubbed that abomination. Killing somebody who got bit was often easy, unless of course it's one of your friends. Abby volunteered to stay behind to ensure their friend wouldn't turn into a clicker. She had to get everybody out, maybe she could come back later for Lev. She decided to talk to her dad about it after burying Nick.
When she arrived at the FOB they didn't let her leave there for a week, on Marlene's orders. Finally she was allowed to return to the stadium in a truck with some other wolves, her dad was waiting for her when she arrived.
"I'm sorry about Nick Abs." he said and gave her a hug.
"We need to talk somewhere privately." Abby whispered to him after he let her go.
Jerry could see that she was serious and told her to meet him at the aquarium. It was the best option they had even though Owen might not necessarily be enthusiastic about it. She went to unload her stuff after checking in with Mike, showered and ate something before she snuck out. It took her a while to get to the aquarium, needing to make sure she wasn't being followed. When she entered the lobby area an arrow flew at her making her flinch to the side.
"Sorry Abs, Owen has this bow challenge I was trying." Jerry said as he came over laughing.
"It's ok." She said and punched his shoulder lightly.
He pretended that it really hurt and got her to laugh too, despite everything and the fact that he still worked way too much she was happy to still have him. Talking to Owen quickly got awkward. Even this time around where he left her because he thought she cheated on him, well she did at least mentally cheat on him, it was clear he was still hung up on her even though he'd been dating Mel for quite some time now. Owen gave them space, choosing to go to that sail boat that was sheltered in the old pool of the aquarium but did ask them to be gone before Mel would arrive.
"Dad… I… we…" Abby started, lost for words already. 'This entire situation is insane, how do I tell him this without him thinking I'm crazy?
"Abs, is it about Marlene?" He asked and she nodded, "I've been trying to get her to stop, Isaac has also been thinking she's been going too far, especially now that we lost Nick."
"Dad this is going to sound crazy but…" Abby sighed. "We need to start getting ready to leave Seattle. For all of our sakes."
"Abby where would we go? I know things are rough right now but it'll pass. There isn't much left out there. I don't want to live in a QZ or with bandits." Jerry said.
"I know a place, filled with good people. It's a peaceful place, unlike here. Dad I'm going to be leaving sooner rather than later. Please come with me." Abby said.
"Abs we are needed here, we can't just leave." Jerry said.
"Dad we are being led to our death's. We need to go." Abby pleaded.
"Just give it some time, Isaac will listen to reason." Jerry said, "Before you know it peace will return and hell maybe we can even do some rebuilding."
"Dad… This is going to sound crazy." Abby started and looked at her father terrified of what he'll think, "Several years from now I was killed and instead of dying I ended up in the past. Don't ask me how, cause I have no idea, but it was like a second chance. I just woke up the day we freed that zebra and Ellie arrived. The first time that man Joel slaughtered half the hospital and killed you so he could take Ellie away. Marlene also died, probably because you weren't alive to save that bitch's life. We're now nearing the time I would have killed him to avenge you."
Jerry started laughing, frustrating Abby.
"Oh come on Abs, that's crazy." Jerry said once he recovered.
"No dad I'm serious, it never happened as far as you know because we changed things when we helped him get her out. After I killed Joel, Ellie came here with a few others and butchered her way through the city killing most of our group. Lev and I ended up tracking them down to where they stayed and I ultimately let her go because of him. As soon as I get Lev and his sister, I'm leaving this city and I hope you'll be coming with me along with the rest of our group." Abby said dead serious.
"Abs this is crazy talk, who is this Lev supposed to be anyway?"
"He's a seraphite kid that is wanted dead by them, because he's." Abby started, "I suppose it is his story to tell you one day if he wants to."
She spent a while trying to convince him, when it was time to head back Jerry was still on the fence about leaving and was clearly wondering if Abby popped a gasket. Regardless she had to start planning to intercept Lev and Yara and increase the collection and storing of supplies. She couldn't take them to the truck now, it was too risky if she got caught. For some time she was conflicted about going to Jackson, it would put Ellie and the small one in danger, where else would Joel have taken Ellie. But the selfish side of her wanted to see them again, hoping that it would end better than last time. Her inner conflict was resolved when she found out that Marlene had dispatched a squad to find Joel's brother Tommy. Probably working off the same information they had worked off in the original timeline. Abby hoped that they could get there in time or that Joel would remain alive for Ellie's sake.
