Death Of A Teenage Robot!

Night had fallen over the quiet town of Tremorton and all of the day people were asleep while the night owls were just getting their routine started. All was peaceful in the slowly advancing town. Young adults were partying at nightclubs, hospital staff were on call, and those who went to night school were studying hard to earn a good quality education. But there was one denizen of Tremorton who wasn't enjoying the sights, nor was she sleeping.

XJ-9, or Jenny as she prefers to be called, sighed for the umpteenth time as she lay on her bed in her lonely room. Things had begun to go downhill for her real fast once she and her friends had graduated from high school. For one thing, Jenny was having a difficult time adapting to life outside of school. She was programmed and designed as a teenager so she didn't know how to adapt and act like an adult like Sheldon and Brad did. The two of them got part time jobs and started looking into colleges to further their education. But at least they still took the time to hang out with their old friend whenever they could, although Sheldon did get over his crush that he had on Jenny, so that was a positive in Jenny's book.

But then her life at home changed.

She had been walking home with Brad, Tuck, and Sheldon after another failed job interview. Apparently, not a lot of places were hiring robots with skills in their respective fields, and there was no way Jenny was joining the military since they'd just treat her as a weapon of war instead of the protector that she is. Which, I guess she is, from a militaristic point of view, but that's beside the point.

They got to Jenny's house and were shocked when Doctor Wakeman introduced them to her newest daughter, XJ-10, who asked them to call her Joan.

Joan is a lot like her predecessor, Jenny, in the fact that she is an earth defense robot armed to the teeth with various weapons to get the job done. But she was fundamentally different from Jenny herself. XJ-10 has a paint job that's primarily white with lavender areas where the blue parts on Jenny would be. She also had a sharper and more angular design and was taller than Jenny, standing just a few inches shorter than the now adult Brad's height. And just from her mannerisms alone, they could tell that she was meant to be what Jenny would have become had she been capable of growing to the young adult stage of life.

Brad, Tuck, and Sheldon handled the introduction really well, but they noticed that Jenny wasn't handling it so well. Even though she didn't need to breathe she had been hyperventilating as her eyes shrunk to the size of pinholes and panic set in as scenario after scenario played through her head. None of them ending well for her.

At the time she had thought things like, 'Mom actually built an XJ-10?' and 'Is she going to replace me?', and even 'Oh my god, no, she's gonna shut me down permanently and lock me in the basement with my sisters, or sell me to the scrapyard to be melted down! Or worse!'

Jenny had actually screamed in panic when Joan tried to see if she was okay before screaming "STAY AWAY FROM ME!" and flying off at hypersonic speed to try and get away from what she thought to be the inevitable all while ignoring the cries to come back. And she would have easily left the Earth's atmosphere in her panic, too, had Joan not caught up to her in record time. She managed to talk Jenny down and ask her what was wrong, to which Jenny explained how since XJ-10 was now fully functioning, Doctor Wakeman was going to deactivate her(Jenny) and lock her away in the basement in the dark with the rest of her XJ predecessors.

XJ-10, or rather Joan, merely sighed and shook her head as she realized that she should have foreseen this kind of reaction. She quickly explained to Jenny that she wasn't her replacement at all. She was built to be her partner in defending Tremorton from any threats that may arise. And more importantly than that, she was Jenny's sister, and she wouldn't let their mother permanently deactivate Jenny so long as she was around to do something about it!

That had brought some comfort to Jenny knowing that she wasn't being replaced like she initially thought that she was. Though, she was still wary around her new sister. After a brief introduction and apologizing for freaking out and flying off like she did, Jenny had begun to show her new sister the ropes on stopping criminals, alien threats, and what have you. She began by showing Joan her rogues gallery, all of the villains she's dealt with in the past and still deals with to this day. Including Killgore, the rogue demolitionists, the alien biker gang, their mother's mutated lab mice, and even Vexus herself.

Joan had been shocked at how many enemies Jenny had made over the years, and the fact that she defeated every single one of them.

The two of them worked well together, stopping bad guys left and right, which was a lot easier since XJ-10 was built to be superior to Jenny in every way. But Jenny had the experience that made her on par with her new sister. Joan even started hanging out with Jenny's friends, which was easier for her since she was programmed as a young adult. And unfortunately for Joan, she now had Sheldon as her own lovesick stalker.

Typical Sheldon.

But after a while, Jenny started noticing some differences in behavior from her friends. They started exclusively hanging out with Joan and we're hanging out less and less with Jenny. Now, she didn't really hold it against Brad and Sheldon. They're adults now and are no longer as interested in the things they used to do as teenagers, like going to the arcade or hanging out at the mall, preferring to do things like window shopping, taking a walk through the park, or even just feeding the pigeons on their days off from work. Except for Tuck, but that's probably because he's still a child who is uninterested in grown-up stuff. But this was all stuff that Joan could relate to since she's programmed as an adult rather than a teenager.

But even though Jenny didn't blame Brad and Sheldon for their choosing to socialize with her sister more than her, it still hurt that they did. But Jenny never said anything because she didn't want to come off as being jealous or petty. Still, bottling up her feelings like she was doing wasn't doing her any favors for her emotional health. And it didn't end there. Joan was beginning to show Jenny up every time the two of them saved Tremorton due to her superior abilities and advanced technology. Despite her experience, Jenny just couldn't keep up and was beginning to feel rather insignificant as a result. She's heard the whispers in the shadows about how Jenny should just be retired and stop 'slowing down the real hero', as they would say. And honestly, Jenny was beginning to feel like he really was just slowing Joan down when it comes to saving the day. Of course, Tuck tried to cheer her up and told her that that wasn't true, and to not listen to those people because they didn't know what they were talking about.

But even though she was glad that Tuck still believed in her, his words didn't help at all.

Jenny sighed in aggravation as she sat up from her bed. It would seem as though she wouldn't be recharging tonight. She just couldn't take her mind off of everything that's been happening, and it's been three months since it all started!

"Maybe a nice warm can of motor oil will help calm my processor." Jenny mumbled to herself.

Looking at her clock, she saw that it was two in the morning so her mother and sister would be asleep at this time. So she quickly and quietly made her way to the kitchen to get herself some oil. After her little snack run, she still didn't feel any more at ease so she decided to go out and try to have a little time to herself. Jenny flew out until she was on the far outskirts of Tremorton and landed on a hill overlooking the large crevasse that the town was built next to.

Foolish choice, if you ask her. All it took was one Cluster Warhead after many years of no earthquakes and it sets off one that almost levels the entire town! Still, she knew that the blame for that incident was hers and hers alone. She was cocky and arrogant during that fight, not taking anything seriously since she had managed to defeat the Cluster so many times in the past that she expected another easy win. Unfortunately, that would not have been the case as she was soon on another misadventure. This time on the Cluster homeworld known as Cluster Prime.

Still, at least with the help of her new robot friends, Jenny had managed to expose Vexus as the tyrant she was and caused her to lose her power base and most of her army. That was a major plus in her book, and led to her saving the earth from Smytus and finally being accepted by a vast majority of the populace.

"Now, it seems like those days are behind me." Jenny mumbled to herself. "I guess I should face the facts. I'm old tech. Functional, but old. Joan can easily handle saving Tremorton without me, and Brad and the others don't need me around anymore now that Brad and Sheldon are adults and Tuck is getting close to middle school age. Maybe it would be better for everyone if I just leave the earth for good and move to Cluster Prime and help Vega with ruling their people, or at least becoming a part of their police force. Sure, everyone here that I care about will be sad for a while if I leave, but they'll get over it."

Jenny sighed and fell on her back as she stared up at the starry night sky.

"I just wish I knew what I should do."

Jenny laid there gazing at the sky for a few more minutes before she noticed something. Something that shouldn't have been there. She gasped as it came closer into view and realized exactly what it was! It was an army of alien battleships! And from out of the ships came hundreds, maybe thousands of Cluster Drones! And leading them was none other than…

"Vexus!" Jenny gasped.

The former queen of the Cluster cackled madly as she flew out of her ship, ordering her troops to attack every human in sight! She herself flew towards the Mayor's office, most likely as a means of using a political leader as a hostage to prevent any resistance towards this hostile takeover!.

"Oh, this is not good!" Jenny said as she stood up.

"Jenny!"

"Brad?" she gasped.

Sure enough, Brad, Tuck, Sheldon, Doctor Wakeman, and Joan all arrived on the scene with Doctor Wakeman carrying several weapons and portable battle vehicles to use.

"What are you all doing here?" Jenny asked.

"When Vexus invaded, an alarm was triggered. As soon as XJ-10 and I saw what was happening outside we quickly called the others and alerted the Skyway Patrol for some backup." Doctor Wakeman explained.

"But why are those drones attacking us?" Sheldon asked.

"Yeah, I thought that the Cluster was being led by Vexus's daughter now, and she's friends with Jenny. She would never attack earth!" Tuck said.

"You're right, Vega wouldn't. But Vexus would." Jenny said with narrowed eyes. "These drones must be defectors of the cluster who are still loyal to Vexus. So they won't listen to reason, especially with Smytus commanding them."

Joan hummed and put a hand to her chin.

"If that's the case, then they should retreat if we disrupt their chain of command." Joan theorized.

"So all we have to do is defeat Vexus." Doctor Wakeman said.

"No. I'll deal with Vexus on my own." Jenny said, shocking the others into silence. "Think about it. This whole thing started years ago when mom was in the Skyway Patrol, but then Vexus became my archenemy and tried more than once to either force me to join the Cluster so she could enslave the human race or just outright destroy me. She's not just doing this to take over the earth, she's doing this to lure me out and take me out for good. And I can't let anyone suffer her wrath because of me. I know what I have to do now."

Jenny eyed Vexus as the sun began to rise over the horizon. Her eyes narrowed with determination, her resolve firm as she realized what must be done to truly put a stop to the threat to the universe that is Vexus and her rogue Cluster army.

"Vexus and her Cluster defectors must be stopped. No matter the cost." Jenny said with narrowed eyes.

She engaged her pigtail thrusters and took flight towards Vexus's armada fully intent on stopping the evil robot from enslaving the human race. Joan and the others were still too shocked to stop her so Jenny actually made it to the armada and engaged her more defensive battle armor, bowling right through the unfortunate Cluster drone stragglers. Oh sure, they all tried to stop her by shooting her with their hyper advanced laser blasters, but Jenny's armor was too strong and held true. She jettisoned the armor and did a flip into the air before drawing an external weapon that she had Doctor Wakeman make for her after watching the Transformers movie. An Ion Cannon which she can one-hand like a boss!

And she used it well as she shot down three drones before landing. She kept shooting and taking down as many of the drones herself as she soon found herself face to face with her archenemy, Vexus!

"So, we meet again, XJ-9." growled Vexus.

"Like a popular character from a robot movie once said; one shall stand, one shall fall." quipped Jenny.

"Why throw away your life so recklessly?" Vexus asked.

"That's a question you should ask yourself, Vexus." Jenny replied as she clenched her fists.

Vexus growled and threw the mayor to the ground.

"No! I'll crush you with my bare hands!"

And so Vexus flew at Jenny and rammed her out of the building and into the main yard, both robots landing hard as electrical sparks arched from their bodies due to the damage. But Jenny wasn't going to be alone in stopping the Cluster Renegades. Doctor Wakeman, Sheldon, Brad, and Tuck quickly sprang into action as they were flying in on battle drones of their own. And the Skyway Patrol was acting as backup.

"I've got to help Jenny!" exclaimed Joan as she tried to get to her sister.

"Stay away, XJ-10! That's XJ-9's fight!" ordered Doctor Wakeman.

Back at the fight, Vexus was thrown hard against a wall which damaged her wings and made her incapable of flight until they were repaired. She fought through the pain and picked up a sharp piece of rubble. With the precision of a huntress she threw it like a spear and nailed Jenny in her abdomen as the teenage robot charged. It caused her to stumble and pause for a minute or two, but it was long enough for Vexus to grab a discarded blaster and shoot her! Jenny barely managed to dodge by a tilt of the head and ran at Vexus who shot her again at point blank range and missed, resulting in her getting slammed into a wall as more debris fell and destroyed her blaster. As Jenny pulled the sharp spike out of her body, Vexus grabbed an external weapon of her own. A plasma sword that she quickly ignited and slashed Jenny across the stomach area with!

It hit her in the same spot as that spike, resulting in a sparking open wound that was very painful to Jenny. And she doesn't even have nerves so she shouldn't be able to feel pain in the first place! Jenny backed up clutching her wound as she tried to get some breathing room, but Vexus jumped into the air and tried to bring her sword down upon her only to get an uppercut to the chin that sent her falling flat on her back! Jenny charged and Vexus tried to sweep kick her feet out from under her, but Jenny dodged that only to get a springboard double kick to the chest by Vexus. Soon the two robots were locked in a grapple with Jenny trying desperately to fend off Vexus who was as determined as a wild predator trying to bring down its prey.

"I'LL RIP OUT YOUR OPTICS!" she screeched.

After a brief struggle, Jenny got the upper hand and threw Vexus off of her, sending her crashing into a stone pillar. By this point, both robot combatants were very badly damaged and weakened, neither having very much left to give should the fight continue to drag on. But it appeared as though the fight wouldn't last much longer. This was the scene that Doctor Wakeman came across as she observed from the sky.

"Finish her off, XJ-9! Do it now!" exclaimed Doctor Wakeman.

Jenny walked to her discarded Ion Blaster and picked it up before walking back over to Vexus. As the former queen of the Cluster rose to her hands and knees, Jenny took aim. But Vexus noticed something close by. It was a plasma pistol that, while small, packed quite a punch! As much as Jenny's Ion Cannon!

And it was right within her reach!

She just needed the right distraction in order to grab it.

Time for her to put those acting lessons to good use!

"No more, XJ-9! Grant me mercy, I beg of you!" exclaimed Vexus.

"You… who are without mercy… now plead for it?" Jenny asked while breathing hard, even though she doesn't breathe. "I always thought you were made of sterner stuff."

"No you don't, Vexus!"

The former Cluster queen had just managed to grab her weapon when XJ-10 rushed her and dogpiled her. But this proved to be a boon for Vexus, and a detriment for Jenny. Because she couldn't shoot at Vexus without risk of hitting her sister!

"Out of the way, Joan!" exclaimed Jenny, who was unable to get a clear shot.

Vexus held Joan in a chokehold before shooting at Jenny. And this time, she hit her mark as the blast hit the open wound in Jenny's torso, resulting in an explosion that caused Jenny to drop her weapon and stumble backwards!

"Fall! Fall!" roared Vexus as she kept shooting.

Jenny was hit twice more in the same spot as she finally fell to the floor from all of the damage, oil leaking from her mouth and various other wounds on her body as though it was blood. But Vexus wasn't much better. Still, she was in better condition than Jenny was at the moment, and as she shoved Joan away, she got to her feet and stalked towards her longtime adversary who struggled to her hands and knees.

"Hah… I would have waited an eternity for this." sighed Vexus as she kept her weapon poised to shoot. "It really is a shame you wouldn't join the Cluster when you had the chance all those years ago back when I was in charge. We would have made the perfect team to enslave the human race. But now… it's over, XJ-9."

Jenny reflexively took deep breaths as she tried to get her bearings, but as she gazed into the optics of the one robot that may be capable of enslaving all of humanity, she managed to pull through her pain and launch a final attack.

"NEVER!"

Using all of her remaining strength, Jenny landed a solid two-handed strike to Vexus's chestplate! It cracked like glass from the impact and Vexus was sent falling from the small cliff that the two robots had been fighting on. What's worse for Vexus is that the strike also destroyed the Golden Chip within her, leaving her completely vulnerable. Jenny tried to look over the cliff to make sure that the job was done for good, but her injuries proved too great as she fell once again only to be caught by her adult stage sister.

"Oh, Jenny… forgive me…" Joan said as she cradled her practically lifeless sister in her arms.

Vexus lay sparking at the bottom of the cliff where she was found by Smytus and his fellow renegades. Seeing that their leader was out of commission, he hastily ordered a retreat as two drones gathered up Vexus and started flying back to the mothership with her. All while dodging lasers and missiles from the Skyway Patrol and the rest of Jenny's crew.

"The renegades are retreating!" exclaimed Sheldon.

"XJ-9 did it! She turned the tide!" said Doctor Wakeman.

The renegades quickly boarded their mothership after gathering their wounded and made a hasty retreat back into space as the humans began celebrating their victory. But the celebration didn't last long as Joan slowly and sadly walked up to them holding her sister in a bridal carry as she tried not to make things worse. Doctor Wakeman gasped in horror at the state that her, technically, oldest daughter was in. She's been badly damaged before, but never this badly! They needed to get her back to the lab, and quickly!

***Sometime Later…***

Sheldon was monitoring Jenny's vital signs as she was hooked up to what was essentially a life support system for robots. Using special tools, Doctor Wakeman examined the damage done by Vexus… and came to a very grave conclusion. She put down the device she was using and with a heavy heart, she relayed the news to Brad and the others.

"I fear the wounds are fatal." Doctor Wakeman said in sadness.

And her sadness was felt by everyone who was gathered. Brad and Tuck couldn't believe it. Jenny had been damaged very heavily in many of her past fights and always bounced right back, so why couldn't she this time? And poor Sheldon felt his heart breaking at the fate of his high school crush who lay on that lab table dying. Joan could only bow her head and close her eyes, feeling regret that she couldn't get to her sister fast enough to prevent this.

"Jenny, you can't die!" Tuck cried through his tears.

Brad and Sheldon looked especially ashamed. When Jenny's new sister came along the two of them easily gravitated towards her due to how mature she acted and how easily she could relate to them as adults. With Jenny, they just felt like they were handing out with their teenage sister instead of a longtime friend, and they subconsciously began to push her away. Now she's dying and they'll never get to make up for lost time. Never get the chance to truly make things right between them!

Jenny opened her eyes slightly, filled with sadness at having to leave her loved ones behind. But at the same time, they were filled with acceptance at what was about to happen. Jenny didn't know if robots had an afterlife to go to, but if she had to die then she was glad that she died saving her friends and family from a fate worse than death.

"Please don't grieve… soon… I'll pass on from this world." Jenny wheezed.

"Jenny…" mumbled Brad.

"J…Joan… it is to you, my sister… that I entrust… the safety of earth and its people… as their guardian." Jenny said to her newest sister.

Which shocked and humbled her.

"Me? But… but I'm still too new. I don't have the same level of experience that you do, I'm… I'm not worthy." Joan said in denial, expressing her insecurities.

As Jenny's eyelids began to quiver, artificial tears pooling in her optics and beginning to trail down the side of her face, Joan took her sister's hand in hers and tried to offer her some form of comfort in her final moments.

"I wasn't either. But… one day… a warrior shall rise from the ashes of defeat… and use the strength of their heart… to light… our… darkest… hour…" Jenny said.

And it was at that moment, she felt the need to do something important. She reached up and with great effort on her part opened up her chest cavity to reveal a pulsing white light. It was something that shocked and amazed Doctor Wakeman, as she knew that that wasn't there when she first built and activated XJ-9 all those years ago. Had she somehow been gifted with a soul of her own?

But how? And why?

"Until that day comes… know that… I will be watching over… all of you…" Jenny said softly as she closed her eyes for the final time. "Goodbye, everyone… I… love you… all…"

Having breathed her last metaphorical breath, Jenny went limp on the lab table as the light in her chest began to disburse skywards in a shower of sparkles that was both beautiful and saddening for all. As that light represented the life energy of the XJ Defense Droid, Jennifer Wakeman. And now, it was gone forever.

The life support system showed that Jenny had flatlined as the last of that light left her body. Everyone watched in anguish and horror as the vivid colors of Jenny's body faded into dull shades of gray. Tuck started crying harder than he was before and buried his face in Brad's shoulder as the young man tried to comfort his little brother. They all knew that things would be different without Jenny, but they didn't know one thing. And that Jenny's journey wasn't over.

Not by a long shot!

***To Be Continued…***

Ending A/N: Hoo boy, this was a doozy to write. For those of you who are longtime fans of Transformers, you can probably tell that I based the fight between Jenny and Vexus on the final battle between Optimus Prime and Megatron from the G1 Transformers movie. But, uh, yeah, Jenny's dead now and it looks like Vexus might not be too far behind from all the damage she took. What adventures await Jennifer Wakeman now? Find out on the next exciting chapter of Dragon Ball Z: Saga of XJ-9!
