Chapter 23
Hogwarts.

2nd September

The next morning Harry and Ginny rose as usual, both knowing that the wards had accepted them both. Following their usual routine before they left their rooms and entered the common room to find Hermione already there, sat at one of the side tables with Neville, intently talking. The seated couple turned at the sound of the door closing.

"Morning you two." Hermione called.

"Morning." Harry and Ginny called and walked over to the table.

"What's got you two talking so intensely this morning." Harry grinned.

"Discussing if there might be anything in the Hogwarts statutes that would enable either Dumbledore or Umbridge to gain any leverage on us or you in particular." Neville replied, pointing at a copy of the document on the table.

"And is there?" Ginny asked.

Hermione shrugged. "We don't think so, but we are going to keep checking."

"Good!" Answered Harry. "We need to be certain, so there are no surprises. By the way Hermione, with all that was going on, I forgot to ask last night, is there a room here for the Granger's? I wasn't sure if it would need the agreement of your head of family for you to officially be part of the alliance to have one."

Hermione and Neville blushed, neither seemed able to speak, but Harry and Ginny both got the message and laughed. "About time." Ginny laughed. "Don't forget to take precautions though."

Hermione spluttered, glared in embarrassment, then gasped. "I think I'll go get ready for breakfast." She got up and walked back towards the Longbottom suite, Neville followed her, escaping too.

"Well they always say to watch for the quiet ones, good on them." Harry chuckled.

They went and sat near the fireplace in the centre of the room, to await the others before they all went through the door to the entrance hall and into Breakfast. They looked up through the ceiling, they could see the wards over the castle.

"I can see where the wards need reattaching and repairing, the threats from inside the castle are clear too." Ginny whispered to him.

"Yes, we need to get onto that as soon as we can. I think there have been a few changes while we slept too, I think the castle has been smartening itself up." Harry grinned. "That might surprise a few people I can think of."

It wasn't long before the others were up and about, even Neville and Hermione re-emerged, though not unnoticed by most, some of whom teased the couple affectionately. Once everyone was there, Harry and Ginny led the way down the short corridor and out into the entrance hall, where they emerged to the surprise of other students who were on their way to breakfast. Once they entered the Great Hall they split onto their house tables, under the watchful eye of Umbridge. She was sat at the staff table, next to the headmaster's empty chair, the other members of staff present sitting separately from her. Other than the fact that her eyes barely left Harry and Ginny, the meal passed uneventfully. The food was good as usual, the post owls arrived as expected carrying letters or items the recipient had forgotten to pack or even a treat or two. Those who subscribed to the Daily Prophet received their copy and paid the owl, and the students settled into gentle chatter while they ate, read or discussed their plans for the day.

Even so Harry noticed that the non alliance students were glancing cautiously, some even a little fearfully, over at the ones who were. He put it down to uncertainty of the motives of the Alliance, for now at least. After all its re-emergence was bound to worry those outside it, it was a powerful block that had not had to be considered for some time. It's presence in the school would be bound to disturb the hierarchy, the uncertainty was certain to fuel some fear. He knew that would need watching, in case it developed further. He was determined that the Alliance would not become the school bullies, or even be seen that way. They needed to be careful not to be seen as above the rules and had to become part of encouraging fairness for all students.

"Hermione." Harry attracted her attention and spoke when he had it. "Do you suppose we need permission from Dumbledore to show the first years round, after what he said last night?"

She smiled. "Way ahead of you Harry, the Head Boy and Girl have already written and asked if they can arrange it before they went to their rooms last night. They got a reply this morning, it is all set up, but some of us need to get on with the research, so we shall do that, while you help with it."

"Good, I could just see him stopping us helping them out." Harry responded.

As the meal finished and Minerva stood. "Your attention please." The room fell silent. "I know it is Saturday, and as yet, you have had no lessons to set homework. However, for those above first year who have not yet done so, this weekend is your last chance to complete any summer homework that may require brushing up or indeed finishing. Of course, you may also benefit from consulting with those who have completed all their work, either in your common rooms or in the library. This morning the Head boy and Girl have arranged the opportunity for all first year students to have tours of the school, so you can find your way round on Monday when lessons will begin. Please meet in the entrance hall where some of the prefects and older students will take groups of you round, I advise all new students to take advantage of this opportunity. Madam Hooch will be at the Quidditch pitch today where any who wish may practise ahead of team trials tomorrow. All teachers will be around the school to help those who ask, and to ensure you are not getting into mischief. I hope you enjoy your weekend settling in, school rules do apply, but you are free to enjoy the facilities of the school and its grounds."

She sat and the conversations around the hall grew, as the students rose to go their separate ways. Hermione and Neville headed up to the library where they were meeting the others researching the Heart of Hogwarts, where better to hide than in full view. Fred, George, and Lee took Ron away up the stairs, while Harry, Ginny, and a number of other Alliance members made their way into the Entrance Hall ready to guide the first years. The prefects of the different houses went to their common rooms to bring any that had returned there, down for the tours. The head boy and Girl quickly put Harry and Ginny in charge of a small group of first year, from mixed houses and sent them off quickly while others gathered waiting to be sent. The couple were out of sight up the stairs, before Umbridge emerged to watch proceedings, carefully.

Having reached the corridor on the first floor, Harry and Ginny stopped their group, to take the opportunity of introductions in the less chaotic area than the one they had left. Naturally the ones who had not met him previously, but were from the Wizarding world, were in awe when they realised that it was the Harry Potter leading the group. They were wide-eyed, with amazement, when he told them to just call him Harry. They all introduced themselves, there were people from each of the houses. Introductions done, they resumed the tour, knowing that there was far too much for them to take in and remember in one session, but at least they had the weekend to explore as well. They introduced them to any Professors they met, the youngsters amazed that Harry bothered remembering their names, it was only then that the none Alliance members began to believe their friends, that he was actually really nice. He was relieved to see any awe or fear melt away, he knew then that it was only a matter of time before what he had noticed at breakfast would fade.

Madam Pomfrey assured them all that she was there to help them, when needed, when they called at the Hospital wing. Although quiet, the library was a hive of activity with older students working away, Madam Pince took time to give brief instructions of how they might use it. They gradually worked their way round the classrooms, even showing them shortcuts and warning them of trick steps, suits of Armour to watch for and to avoid Peeves. The Poltergeist, though, seemed wary of Harry now, not polite or completely subdued, but definitely more respectful, when they met him. Eventually they emerged from the castle and went out into the grounds, first taking them to Hagrids Hut, where the half giant lived and taught. He was not there, but they saw him in the distance, heading into the forest. They warned them not to go into the trees without a teacher, then walked down to show them the lake, before heading for the Quidditch pitch.

"I know it all seems quite daunting at the moment, but you will soon get the hang of getting about the Castle." Harry assured them as they walked away from the castle to the pitch. "The best trick is to remember how to get from your common room to the Great Hall as a central spot then finding your way from there to where you need to be. Some of us will be about usually, so don't be afraid to ask us. Also, stick together and help each other, regardless of house, and you will be fine."

There was a lot of activity in the stadium, with students practising ready for the trials the next day, Madam Hooch keeping a weather eye on it all. Ginny led the group up one of the towers to the seats where they all sat to watch what was going on. It was not long before Draco and Daphne led a second group to join them and the first years excitedly compared notes and watched the older students flying round. When a third group arrived, Harry, Ginny, and Draco went down to the pitch, Dobby arrived with their brooms, and they took off. The three flew a circuit within the pitch in formation, then stopped at the tower where they had left their groups, who were cheering madly for them. At a nod from Ginny the three then flew off, performing a number of Quidditch moves, and getting used to the brooms again. After staying below the level of the top of the stands, Harry led the trio up above the stands, and continued to climb. He levelled out high above the ground, about level with the top of the Astronomy Tower, and stopped.

It was the first time he had seen the castle in daylight, since they had returned, the difference from when he had looked back at it as they left before summer was incredible. It was as if the stones were giving off a warmth in the sun, each window glistened, the tiles of the roofs seemed to almost glow. He heard both Draco and Ginny gasp as they too looked at the castle, and gasped.

"Not just me then." Harry said.

Ginny shook her head as they hovered next to each other. "Well we knew from the link it had started to repair itself."

"Celebrating our return." Harry added.

"It must have looked like this when it was almost new." Draco observed.

They gazed at the building just as they had the first time they had seen it, from the boats on the lake, just as awe struck, noticing details they had not spotted before. The carvings of the Gargoyles seemed crisper, the finials on the roof more defined, in fact every aspect of the building seemed refreshed, it was an amazing sight. Soon others climbed to join them, including Madam Hooch, curious to see what they could. Without exception, they were each awe struck, held to the view as if in a trance, only broken when the Professor spoke.

"I suppose we shouldn't be surprised, did none of you notice how fresh and new the interior looked, even the tapestries refreshed?" All of them looked at her, clearly none had noticed, she chuckled. "Were you all walking around blindfolded? Well I suppose it would be useful to give the First years a taste of flying, and satisfy the curiosity I am sure they have about what we are all doing. So fourth year and above along with house Quidditch players go offer them a lift. No acrobatics while sharing brooms though, please, we don't want them too scared for their first lesson with me."

Harry, Ginny, and Draco descended to the stand where their groups were along with some others from the Alliance, while others went to other places where groups of first years were. Relaying the offer, they helped one student onto their broom, gave them a safety talk. Then they set off round the pitch for a couple of laps to get them used to the sensation, before climbing to give them sight of the Castle. Returning them to where they had been collected, they picked up another and repeated the process, until all the first years who wanted to, had flown with them. They then led them all back up to the Castle for lunch, where Umbridge once again sat next to the Headmasters throne and observed Harry and Ginny closely.

A few minutes after they had settled for Lunch, first Hermione appeared, and sat with them, grinning madly as the other Gryffindors from her study team took their seats next to them, all looking particularly pleased with themselves. Looking round Harry noticed the rest of the group who were from the other houses appeared just as pleased, as they settled at their house tables as well.

Secondly Dumbledore arrived and struggled to his seat. He sat and like the others in the hall, began to eat. Unlike the others, though, Umbridge appeared to be speaking insistently to him while he enjoyed his meal. Most ignored the sight, the rest of the staff seemed to roll their eyes and shake their heads at their colleague, while the students talked with their friends. After pudding, but before anyone could disperse, Dumbledore stood and raised his arms for silence.

"It has been brought to my attention that contrary to my instruction last night a number of groups met this morning. I believe they met in the library and became study groups of some sort. I remind you all that groups such as this must gain permission from myself before they meet again, and I discourage you from forming them ahead of it being granted." He announced before sitting back down, next to a smug looking Umbridge.

The chatter in the hall rose again, Madam Pince and Professor McGonagall made their way to speak with the headmaster. Taking advantage of the distraction of the others around them, Hermione leant over to speak with Harry and Ginny.

"Umbridge followed a group of First years on their tour, but stayed in the library when she saw that all the tables were full and students were helping each other. Don't worry she didn't see what we were working on, and I think we have some of the information we need." She handed them a folded parchment. "These are my notes, additionally we believe we know the process needed, so we can be ready, once you know the exact location and how to get in to wherever it is. We plan to check our work on that aspect of it this afternoon, regardless of the announcement, which I believe Madam Pince was expecting and has a way round."

"Thanks Hermione!" Harry grinned. "So if that's in addition to your notes, what are they about?"

"I believe we have a way to discover where the heart of Hogwarts is, and of course only you could do it." Hermione informed them.

Harry and Ginny felt their link to the castle resonate in excitement. "Good, we shall visit it as soon as we can, this afternoon perhaps, we shall start the search at the very least." Harry said.

Ginny nodded. "Yes, I think that would be best."

"Why not tonight when you are less likely to be seen? You are exempt from the curfew, after all." One of the Gryffindors from the research team asked.

Hermione rolled her eyes, but Ginny simply smiled. "Well yes, but we don't want to draw attention to that, not yet at least. Besides, we have other ways of getting about the castle without being seen." She grinned.

Harry grinned. "Thanks Hermione and to all those who worked on this. We shall go to look round after we have read your notes, but first I need a word with Professor McGonagall myself. Let's get that meeting with the alliance staff this evening, we might need their help on this in any case."

They had just finished speaking when the room was quiet again, they looked towards the top table, where a weary looking Dumbledore was once again standing. "I have been reminded that the Library is under the jurisdiction of Madam Pince, and so any study groups who wish to meet there have my permission." He announced, then turned and left the hall.

Madam Pince looked triumphant, while Umbridge looked like eaten a lemon.

"Well that was interesting." Ginny observed. "I would say that Dumbledore was given no choice, but to retract his instruction regarding groups in the Library."

Hermione grinned. "I couldn't possibly comment." She smirked, then left to gather her research group again.

Harry pocketed the parchment, then he and Ginny stood and made their way towards Professor McGonagall. She saw them coming, and rose to meet them, far enough away from the teachers' table that they would not be overheard.

Seeing that Umbridge was watching them, Harry spoke quickly. "Would it be possible for the teachers we spoke of to meet with us, in our common room this evening after dinner?"

He noticed Umbridge stand as he spoke, and walk towards them.

"I shall pass that on, my Lord." Minerva replied.

Harry nodded and with Ginny, turned and left the Hall to go to the Common room to read the notes they had been given.

Back in the hall, Minerva smiled, then turned in response to the expectant cough from Umbridge.

"Is that usual Minerva? Students approaching staff at meal times. It does not seem appropriate to me, nor does attributing titles, beyond Mr. Or Miss, to students either, by the way." Umbridge simpered.

Minerva simply smiled and ignored the second criticism, to reply. "Really Delores? It is the duty of Heads of House in this school to look after the students in their house, and it is quite customary for them to speak to us confidentially as required. Now you may have little to do, but I must get on, I must consult with some of my colleagues, on matters of import. Unlike some, I cannot afford to waste time snooping on trivialities."

She left a stunned, red-faced, Umbridge where she was and quickly spoke to those she needed to, to pass on the message, before leaving the Hall. Umbridge barely noticed the chuckling of the rest of the staff, before she mustered what dignity she could and left.

A number of Alliance students were socialising in the common room when Harry and Ginny arrived, and took seats on the sofa to study the notes Hermione had given them. They quietly discussed the contents, before checking they had what they needed, made a quick Floor call to Sirius, then set off through the door that would bring them to the fourth floor. They had plenty of time to explore before they were missed by anyone they did not want to notice them, and hopefully find the access to the heart of Hogwarts, where all the wards were powered from. The notes had suggested plenty of possible locations, and a couple of ways of finding the heart, but Hermione had added one more, adding the word "Map!" To the ideas.

They knew the heart was under attack, weakened, from curses and wards that conflicted with those placed by the founders and their students, which had made this one of the most Magically secure places in Britain. A status they hoped would be restored soon, but first they needed to find it and ensure they could recharge it, with the help of their friends. A task they knew could not be undertaken today, but could be carried out the next day, so long as the theories the research group had suggested proved to be correct.

While they were out of sight, before they emerged into the corridor, they covered themselves with the invisibility cloak, and Harry opened the Marauders map. They had confirmed with Sirius that so long as he or Ginny touched the Map with their wand, when they asked, it would guide them to their destination. Though in this case it would be with the help of the Magic of the castle as well.

Touching the Map with her wand, Ginny asked. "Guide us to the heart of Hogwarts."

They watched as the map animated, settling on their position, an arrow appeared and moved ahead of their footsteps on the parchment, as they walked along the route it showed. In their minds they had thought that the Heart would be in the very centre of the castle, but the route they were taking did not seem to head towards where they believed it might. Nor was it heading into the depths of the dungeons, as they had also expected it could have done. Instead, contrary to all the ideas on the parchment, they were guided towards, then past the Hospital wing, into a corridor they could not recall visiting before.

The directions on the Map led them to the end of the passageway, and down a long set of steps. Looking at the Map they realised they were heading towards the outer wall of the castle, on the side closest to where the arena for the first task in the Triwizard had been set up the year before. They could see two doors at the bottom of the steps, one was a tool store, while the one straight ahead led outside to the grounds. Harry realised it was a door he had seen open only once, straight after the task, when Fleur and Cedric had been taken for treatment of the burns they had sustained retrieving their egg from the dragon they had faced. He had been puzzled at the time, now he knew it had been the quickest way to the Hospital wing from the tent where they had received a preliminary assessment and treatment.

They reached the doors at the bottom of the steps and tried both, they were locked. They looked round again, the space was restricted, the map showed they were alone and had not been followed, the Arrow simply spun on the spot they occupied.

"What do you think, Harry?" Ginny asked.

"Not sure!" He replied. "Knowing Hogwarts, there is more here than meets the eye though."

No sooner had he spoken, than the stairs they had descended and the blank wall next to them parted along the joint between them, revealing a cave, within the living rock they had concealed. The space revealed, had every appearance of a large natural cavern, broadly circular in shape, and well lit, though they could not see a source for the light. They entered the space, there were white stalactites hanging from the ceiling above stalagmites building from the floor as the water dripped onto them. The walls were natural stone, dotted with crystals reflecting the light, creating a sharp contrast with the carved stone walls and wooden doors at the entrance. At the centre of the cave some of the stalagmites and stalactites had met to form four white pillars creating a single column, linking floor to ceiling. It was then they noticed a plan of the castle and grounds appear, on the stone floor beneath their feet. A dome of light rose from the perimeter, curving over the plan to meet at the top of the column. They saw that the column was at the epicentre of the plan and realised it was on the spot this room should be depicted on it. They were standing at the very centre of the grounds, the castle was built to one side of the area available, only just covering the centre point. The light dome was mainly white, but angry red and black forms swirled around it, occasionally touching the column or even the other crystalline formations in the cavern. The four pillars, Stalactites and Stalagmites, flashed when the angry looking lights touched them, sending the blotches skidding over the white surface. Leaving what looked like hairline cracks in the surface, which spread down them, before slowly fading, only to be renewed with the next attack.

"The heart of Hogwarts." Ginny breathed in amazement.

Harry nodded. "We need to repair it and the wards from here, we need a way to get everyone here without it being noticed."

"Perhaps if we speak to Professor McGonagall, the staff in the Alliance may be able to help us as well." Ginny agreed. "We shall add it to the discussions for tonight, let everyone know what we need to do."

Harry agreed, and they turned to leave, still under the invisibility cloak. They reached the two doors and again turned, to watch the wall and stairs close.

"We shall be back soon." Harry said, before the stonework covering the cave had closed completely.

They made their way back the way they had come, they would speak with the staff in the Alliance that evening, the sooner they could get this done, the better for everyone in the school.

That evening dinner passed almost as usual, a little louder perhaps as the students discussed the days activities. Umbridge resumed her habit of glaring at Harry and Ginny, it had already become expected. The Muggle born first year students were curious what they would find to fill the evenings, they had realised that there were none of the activities they were used to. However, the older students were keen to help them get to know some of the activities in the castle, as well as the Quidditch trials there would be taster sessions of the activities on the approved list the next day. By pudding, talk was mostly about what they could expect of life in the castle.

Once the meal was over, most of the Alliance students gathered in their common room to try to plan how they would restore the school to how it should be. The only ones missing were the prefects on duty until curfew, when they would join the rest of them, when the staff in the Alliance would also join them. They also learned how the resurrection of the Alliance had been received in all the houses, by the other students. The Hufflepuff students had gathered in the house common room after lunch, where they had all been quick to accept the re-emergence of the Alliance. Although there had been some questions about conflict of loyalty between house and Alliance were raised, which had been answered to the satisfaction of all, at least for now. In Ravenclaw a similar gathering had been held, where the Alliance and Harry had been discussed. The two-seventh year Prefects from that house had undertaken to conduct research and report back, but none could see a particular problem, so long as there was no preferential treatment, or fresh rivalries caused. Both those two houses had done far more than either Gryffindor or Slytherin, although the former were to hold a meeting later that evening, organised by Fred and George. There were to be no meetings in Slytherin, where there were fewer members than in any of the other houses. However, under Draco's leadership, those few were gradually assuming control of the house. As was the way in the house of the snakes, persuasion was the way to gain consensus and learn opinion, none would be volunteered between students, unless they perceived a threat to the way the house worked. This was easier than it sounded. In part due to the deference paid to Draco in the past by many, forming a habit that the Slytherins found hard to break, although there was suspicion of his friendship with Harry as well. This helped them to be able to engage with many, before those children of Death eaters who remained loyal to those ideals realised what was going on and made it more difficult.

They all agreed that they should not spend all their time in these quarters, but needed to be present in their own house dormitories as well. Most of them had friends who could not access these rooms freely, and did not want to lose them simply because their families were not part of the Alliance. Harry assured them that they could come and go as they please, within the school rules, just because they had this place did not mean they should isolate themselves from their house mates or others. The Prefects who had been on duty arrived quickly after the curfew, followed by the staff, who arrived through the doors from various parts of the castle. First to arrive were Professors McGonagall, Flitwick and Sprout, soon followed by Professor Hooch, Madam Pince, Madam Pomfrey and Professor Babbling. The room fell silent on their arrival, Harry and Ginny stepped forward.

"Welcome all of you, thank you for coming." Harry greeted them.

"That is quite alright my Lord, my Lady, thank you for inviting us." Professor Flitwick responded.

Ginny nodded in acknowledgement. "Please come and sit down, and please, all of you, we are Harry and Ginny here at least. In the school we are just students and with all of us we should not be treated any differently, just because we are all in the Alliance. That said, there are things we need to discuss."

The staff and some of the students sat round the fire with Harry, Ginny, Neville, Hermione, Draco and Daphne, while others turned their chairs to face into it from the surrounding space. With all of them present Harry and Ginny described what they had found that afternoon. They also described what they had seen and sensed of the wards and the attack they were under.

Professor Babbling asked the first question. "So I take it that you intend to try to restore the wards just as the school has been?"

"Yes!" Ginny replied. "But, we shall need all you to help to achieve it."

One of the first years behind her piped up. "All of us, but we haven't had any lessons yet."

Flitwick chuckled. "Not to worry young lady, I think all that may be important is a wand and a voice when the time comes, at a guess."

"Yes sir!" The first year shrank.

"Don't worry, I don't bite." The professor smiled.

"Not often anyway." Professor Sprout Grinned.

Flitwick cocked his head to one side, grinning. "True I suppose."

The staff and senior students all chuckled.

Harry smiled. "All of us will have a role, including the first years. If we can, it would be good to get this done tomorrow, before lessons begin, and we all become too busy with work and what activities are allowed."

"Harry, if there are dark spells involved perhaps we should have the assistance of a curse breaker." Madam Pince suggested.

"Good idea, I am sure Gringotts can supply one for us." Harry replied.

Draco stood. "I shall go Floo Griphook, is there anything else we may need from them."

They all looked at each other, before Professor Sprout asked. "Don't we need to get Albus permission for Goblins to enter the castle?"

"I don't think we need to worry about that." Neville assured the teacher of his favourite subject, who looked puzzled until he spoke again. "The owners of the castle will be more than pleased." He grinned.

"What?" She said, then realised. "Oh yes, of course, sorry Harry, sorry Ginny, somehow I missed the link."

Again the rest of the staff chuckled, then Madam Pomfrey spoke up. "I think that solves that one, and I shall have medical supplies with me just in case."

"Good!" Ginny nodded. "That will be very useful, especially knowing how these things happen to Harry."

They all laughed and Harry said. "Call Griphook Draco, before this lot get worse." He grinned.

Draco nodded and left to his rooms to make the call.

"Now the next problem." Harry sighed. "How to get us all there without it being noticed?"

Ginny agreed. "There are only two ways to the location, the hospital corridor, which is blocked when we open the cave, and the door through the wall to the grounds."

"Well I can ensure the door is unlocked." Madam Pomfrey offered.

"So just to get people to it without being noticed." Professor Flitwick observed.

Neville perked up. "How about after the trials, a couple of us older ones take a first year under our wing to help guide them round again, and steadily end up going that way in?"

"Good idea and the rest could simply casually wander that way, meanwhile if we staff spot Albus or Delores about we shall distract them." Professor Flitwick added just as Draco reappeared.

"Griphook will arrive tomorrow with a team of trusted curse breakers and Goblins to help as needed, we just need to give him the time in the morning." He told them.

"Well that all seems to be coming together nicely, curse breaker booked and a reasonable way to get everyone there." Harry observed.

"While we are all here, and although I know many students here, Harry, I think I am the member of staff present who knows you the least of us." Professor Babbling observed. "I have yet to teach either of you, though I believe you are on my class list this year Ginny."

Harry nodded. "Yes I think that is true, though I was going to see if I could swap divination for Runes. After a year in a classroom, hearing I am doomed, I believe I have had enough and Runes appears to be far more useful in my situation. However, I am not aware of how I go about arranging the change, do I simply speak with you, Professor McGonagall or is there a different system?"

His head of house and the Professor looked to each other, nodded and Professor McGonagall answered. "That is not a problem Harry, your timetable will be amended."

Professor Babbling agreed. "It will be a pleasure to have you in the class Harry, though you will need to catch up which means more work for both of us, not that I mind. As for tomorrow, I believe we might get help from most of the other staff, if I read things correctly. Umbridge and Albus would naturally be exceptions to that, and we would prefer them to be unaware of what we are doing."

"Agreed!" Replied Ginny.

"I am not sure where Snape or Hagrid stand." Added Harry. "The former does not seem to have any particular loyalty to Dumbledore, but neither has he any to us. I think Hagrid may have divided loyalties, but I am yet to speak with him about any of it to find out for certain of course. He was a little standoffish with us the other day, I am not yet sure what that was about though."

"Hagrid is a puzzle Harry, I would agree." Professor Sprout responded. "He is feeling torn I think, he still believes Albus to be a great man, but he also cannot understand why he is behaving as he is lately, especially towards you. The same could be said the other way round though. He is overjoyed about you having a family, and can understand why you would be upset with Albus, but has difficulty with what he has seen done to the headmaster in your name. I think Hagrid is seeing a man he has hero worshipped, prove to be flawed and that is hard for anyone, especially Hagrid who owes his life and livelihood to that man. "

Harry nodded. " I can see that, but I am not sure what to do about it. Hagrid was the first Wizard I can remember knowing, he has been a loyal friend and I really don't want to lose that."

Minerva looked at him thoughtfully for a moment. "I suggest that you treat him as you always would, but let him approach you. I know he has barely seen the Headmaster this summer, he returned from a mission he had been given, earlier than expected, one he had undertaken with Madam Maxime. He says they heard what was happening with you, which raised questions in his mind about the mission and if it would really help. They apparently discussed it between them, then diverted their efforts to matters they believed were more helpful to Albus' fears of a forthcoming war. I know he was delighted to be invited to your events, he returned from France just the day before that event and thoroughly enjoyed himself with the petting zoo. He also said he was disappointed he could not have spent more time with you, but knew you were busy. I also know that Albus has made it clear how disappointed in Hagrid he is, and has planted a fear that his failure to complete the mission could jeopardise you. I believe that to be a ploy to keep him from approaching you, so Rubeus may not approach you if you appear too upset with him."

"He was a star at the event, we ought to personally thank him for that." Ginny observed.

Professor Sprout nodded. "I think that might be a good way to test the water with him. Sorry Minerva, I know what you mean, but I think that on this occasion that would be the best way to approach him."

Harry looked to the other staff and even Professor McGonagall nodded their agreement.

Harry nodded thoughtfully, knowing that the Professor worked closely with his friend. "I shall need to speak with him soon." He concluded.

They then briefly discussed expectations of Alliance students and staff outside this room, before they all dispersed for the evening.

When Harry and Ginny reached their suite, it was to find Kreacher with a letter from Sirius and Bella. They had arranged a meeting of the adults of the alliance, to gather information. This letter outlined what had been discussed at that meeting and the conclusions reached. The economic influence of the group was enormous, which also meant its political sway was as well. That said, the group as a whole was not on the side of the light or dark factions, it took the view that such considerations should not have influence on how the Wizarding world should be run. It had been shown that neither faction was good for growth in the community, both slowing the economy and diverting official attention from what it should be doing. This would be the first time they had met since the Wizangamot at which Harry had revealed himself, so it would be an opportunity to formally gauge reactions. Certainly the social functions of the summer had allowed some chance, but it would only be now that there would be a chance to discuss the events of the summer properly. It was traditional that the meeting was held in a club in London that the Alliance owned and so it was to be this time, although it was unknown if Harry and Ginny could attend. That would depend on if they could leave the castle so soon, they doubted Dumbledore would authorise it, although he should not prevent it, they all knew that had not prevented him before. They would not act against the headmaster until he breached the rights of anyone, Alliance or not. They knew that Harry wanted to use the Alliance students to protect others in the school if needed. Now knowing Umbridge was in the Castle as well, they guessed it was likely that it would be, the Professors who were part of it would help mitigate her influence as well.

Having read the letter, Harry and Ginny retired for the night, it had been a long day, hectic at times, and they were both exhausted and were swiftly asleep. They would reflect carefully on what it said and discuss it with Sirius and Bella when they next spoke.

Sunday 3rd September.

As the sun rose the following morning and not for the first time, Voldemort was trying to work out at what point after he had regained his body it was that everything had begun to fall apart. He could not pinpoint it, had it been when his followers stopped answering? Had it been sooner? He was not sure, but he knew this was not what he had planned. He had made no progress rebuilding his support base, he had ceased marking the few new recruits now, those he had, had soon disappeared thanks to the wards now placed in most Wizarding properties. Inexplicably they had also been placed on most sensitive Muggle locations too, so as soon as any marked Death eaters encountered them they would disappear into Ministry custody. Now he had so few left to serve him, all of them compared unfavourably with Wormtail.

His current crop of acolytes were really useful for little more than domestic help, they brought little magical power, wealth, or even skill. Certainly they were pure bloods and had the right attitude, but lacked ability and position, not one was from an influential family. He had lost influence and could see no way of regaining it, especially through these few, who were not worthy of his mark, even if it were wise to give it now. They had failed to bring truly useful recruits to the cause, none he would have accepted to his presence except that he was in such a desperate situation.

His only reassurance was that he was alive and, thanks to all he had done, it was virtually impossible that he could be killed. Time was on his side, much more than for anyone else. It may be passing, but at least it was no longer an enemy, he did not need to concern himself with its relentless passage. He need not worry, no one knew the steps he had taken, not all of them. He knew of the loss of one of his safeguards, Lucius had carelessly lost that one, but the others were intact, he was sure he would know if any of them weren't. Although he did not know how, he was certain that due to their very nature they could not be eliminated without his knowledge. It was inconceivable that parts of himself could be destroyed, without him feeling it, even if they were separate from him physically.

There was excitement in the air in the Great Hall as the students ate breakfast, it was the first time any of them could remember Quidditch trials being held so soon after their arrival at the school. The older students informed the first years that normally they would have had at least one formal flying lesson before any team trials were held, though any who could already fly could try out in any case. Most saw that this change could be seen as a means to exclude any Muggle born, or raised, first years from trying out. Indeed, had the headmaster not been so discredited over the summer, they would have dismissed the thought as ridiculous. Conversation round each of the tables revolved almost entirely round the trials and the forthcoming Quidditch season. Harry was hoping that the trials for Gryffindor would be early, so they would have time to prepare themselves for restoring the heart. Although he realised that would give the teams that followed after them an advantage.

As the food was cleared from the table, Madam Hooch rose, the headmaster had not appeared for the meal. "Your attention please." She called firmly, and the Hall fell silent in anticipation. "I expect most of you will want to watch the trials this morning, which will begin in half an hour. They shall start with all those who wish to try out demonstrating basic flying skills, which I shall supervise. Only those who show they have adequate skills to safely play shall progress to team trials, which shall proceed in the order of an independent draw by team captains. They inform me that they are quite happy for existing team members to continue if they wish and need not try out, but are expected to assist with testing potential new players. As such Gryffindor requires a keeper, but Miss. Johnson informs me that she will also consider candidates for reserves. Hufflepuff requires a seeker, some Chasers and again are looking for reserves, Ravenclaw are looking for a chaser, beaters, and a keeper. Finally, the Slytherin team require two chasers and new beaters. Those of you wanting to try out for your team must report to the Pitch with their broom, if they have one, or if not then the school brooms shall be available in the shed next to the pitch. For those who do not want to try out, but want to watch please make your way directly to the stands, do not enter the pitch itself, unless particularly asked to do so. Spectators, please respect all those who are participating and do not distract them. I shall see you at the ground in twenty-five minutes, late arrivals will not be able to participate."

The rumble of chatter rose again, and some hurried out to get ready. Harry and Ginny left calmly and retrieved their brooms and along with the Gryffindor team were on the pitch with the other teams. Ginny was going to try out for reserve chaser, and was talking to Angelina, along with other candidates. Soon Madam Hooch called for the captains to come forward, she held a bag in her hand. One by one, the captains drew a token from the bag, Harry was reminded of selecting his Dragon for the Triwizard. Angelina returned content, but they noticed that Montague, the Slytherin Captain was furious.

"We are third in line, Slytherin are first." She grinned, then looked at the new candidates. " Get ready to show your skills, listen for instructions and do your best."

They nodded, as Madam Hooch called the candidates to gather near her. While she briefed the hopeful students, those already on one of the teams took seats on the edge of the pitch to watch.

The briefing lasted a few minutes, before the students spread out and mounted their brooms. Madam Hooch moved among them, checking their grip, before telling them to take off, she watched as each one completed a circuit of the pitch. All of them completed this first test, and she mounted her own broom and flew up to join them where the students were hovering above the centre of the pitch. She spent the next hour putting them through various flight tests, starting with simple manoeuvres, building steadily to the more complicated and high speed variations they were likely to use in a game. It was during the later stages that she eliminated a few, who were not able to complete the tasks or did so in a careless manner, rather than safely, but still there were not many who did not make the cut.

It was time to watch the Slytherin selection process, the Students from the other houses all settled on seats to watch. There was quite some speculation as to how Montague, the Slytherin captain would deal with the process, after all the house team had never held such trails before. In the end it was quite disappointing, the team and candidates flew round a little, then all the players landed and walked off, followed by the candidates.

"I expect they will be deciding the team in their common room again." Angelina observed, as Madam Hooch called the Hufflepuff team and candidates to the pitch.

They watched the Badgers start with some warm-ups, before they would start the tests, then Angelina caught their attention again. "We shall be selecting based on performance today, not just on flying, but also how well you will fit in with the rest of us. The existing players will all have a say, but we won't announce anything until we are safe in the common room." She told them all, then resumed watching the Puffs selection process.

The Gryffindors found themselves guessing which of the Hufflepuff's they would have on the team, but they did not discover who was chosen. The Captain and team simply thanked the candidates, before they headed for the stands at the end of their time.

The Gryffindor team and candidates swiftly entered the pitch. The hopefuls quickly dividing into groups, one for each of the positions available. Ginny was trying out for the reserve team, she played Chaser or seeker, not Keeper, so was not trying out for that position. There were three strong candidates for the vacant place, a second year Muggle born named Shilton was the surprise one of them, she was a natural with an uncanny ability. Although the other two showed equal amounts of skill and were older, both had attitude problems. McLagan was arrogant and tried to direct the other players, rather than leaving it to Angelina. The third was Ron, whose sulky demeanour and attitude towards his brothers, Harry and Ginny would spoil his chances.

They were the leading three for Angelina to choose from, out of all the candidates. As far as the reserve team selection went, she was delighted that she would have more than one reserve for most positions, although only Ginny showed an ability for Seeking. It was, by far, the strongest place the team had been in for many years. It had taken an hour for Angelina to have a short list, Lunch would start soon, so she called the session to a close, leaving time for them all to clean up. Ravenclaw would make their selections after Lunch, while the Gryffindor first team discussed who would be the new keeper.

Needing most of the team replacing, the Ravenclaw Captain had little support from existing players to help select from the candidates, though in the event selecting Beaters was simple. Two third years proved they would be almost as strong as the Weasley twins. The Keeper post was more tricky, only two applied, neither were particularly skilled, so it would be down to which could most easily be brought up to speed. They had most difficulty finding a chaser, though. There were plenty of candidates, but not one who had the skills required. In the end the existing chasers flew with each of them, assessing how easily they would fit into their group. Some were too forceful, some not enough. Some were seeking the glory, others almost scared of the Quaffle. Eventually they borrowed it down to a second year girl, who fit into the team extraordinarily well almost instantly. She lacked the ball control, and was not the best player of the bunch, but she was committed, and fitted in well with the rest of the team, confident, but not arrogant. She was eager to learn, and they had plenty of time to train her before their first match.

As it had turned out, theirs was the only team named at the end of the session, the rest would be announced in their common rooms, not that the secrets would be kept for long. All of them knew that the first practise of each team would be watched by members of other houses who would report back. The trials over most of the students dispersed, though some remained and took turns with the brooms. Harry and Ginny walked hand in hand towards the lake, as if going for a romantic walk together. They did walk a short way along the shore, before making their way back up the grass towards the door at the end of the Hospital wing corridor. They took a seat on the grass, before, laying next to each other, just as many couples their age would do on a fine warm day at the school. Indeed, there were other couples spread round the area reclining in different positions. Other students sat in circles chatting with each other, none of it appeared unusual. It was common to see students behaving in this way in this part of the grounds, o sunny days, just as it was in several others. They smiled as they heard Professor Babbling greet Umbridge.

"Ah Delores, making the most of the grounds before the Fray begins tomorrow. I don't blame you, we won't get much chance to enjoy them after tomorrow, and if the weather turns not much chance before Easter if things go as they usually do here." She said Jovially.

"No, Bathsheda, I am keeping an eye on the students, especially those with ideas above their status, ensuring they keep to the rules. We really cannot afford to let discipline slip, we have a responsibility after all." Umbridge replied.

"Oh I certainly agree, we must keep an eye on all the students. However, I should tell you that experience tells us that this is one of the areas traditionally frequented by those least likely to be a problem, and is in fact one of the safest parts of the grounds. It is an area many like to just sit and chat, quiet enough for couples to enjoy, yet sufficiently public that they can do no more than kiss and be in each other's company. We don't want to discourage that, or they may go to more private places instead, and that is harder to monitor of course. We keep an eye on it of course, but as it is so close to the castle, those who want to cause most issues or mislead others into it are usually to be found elsewhere. They favour places furthest from the castle, where they are least likely to be seen. At least so they think, of course it is not quite so."

"Really, well I am afraid I must keep an eye on certain elements here."

"Oh well in that case perhaps I could show you a less obtrusive place in the castle where you can keep watch over a wider area than here. I have no doubt one of our colleagues will be there already, I am surprised Albus didn't tell you about it, it would save you wandering around so much too."

There was a pause, before they heard Umbridge again. "That is most kind Bathsheda, I was beginning to wonder why there were so few staff out keeping watch, that may well explain it, lead the way."

They heard them chatting as the two teachers walked away. Unsure what the professors had in store for Umbridge, but it had got her out of the way, and a moment later they heard the lock in the door clunk back, it was now unlocked.

Quite casually Harry and Ginny rose and made their way to the door, which they opened and went through, closing it behind them. Inside a little up the stairs Poppy stood, she turned as they entered.

"Griphook is waiting in the hospital wing, with Bill Weasley and some other curse breakers in case needed." She told them. "Minerva, Pomona and Filius will join them to aid them in navigating the school, the others will all join you."

"Good plan, are you staying with us or standing by in the Hospital wing?" Harry asked. "Dobby can transfer any of us to you if need be, he will relay any messages as well."

"I am remaining at my post, until you are done." She replied. "Good luck, though I have a feeling all will be well."

They nodded, and the healer continued up the stairs, once she reached the top, Harry opened the cave. It was not long before alliance students began to arrive through the door from the grounds, Harry and Ginny guiding them further in, arranging them around the perimeter of the space. Every time the door opened they had to get those who arrived in quickly, as they stopped to gasp at the first sight of the heart of Hogwarts, moving them out of the way of the next arrivals. The first Alliance staff members to arrive took on this task, Professor Babbling arriving after a few minutes.

"I left Delores on the astronomy tower, on the gallery level. She is delighted to be able to watch over the grounds secretly, she will be up there the rest of the day I expect." The teacher grinned.

Soon they were all assembled and Harry instructed them all to place their hands on the wet mineral columns, it was time to restore the power of Hogwarts fully.

Dumbledore was feeling isolated, sitting at his desk in his office. He could feel his control over the Wizarding world slipping further and further by the minute, or at least, so it seemed. He had no way of regaining control of even the Order, the members of which seemed energised more than he had ever seen, by their new training and roles. Each one of them were acting as if to prove their usefulness to the cause, rather than simply relying on the leader for direction. Of course that leader should be himself, but he despaired at the poor reactions his suggestions received from the members he approached.

It was no better at the Ministry, now he no longer had an office in the building and no base to build from. He had no credibility left in any department, not even in the Wizangamot, where it had been proposed that his hard paid for family seat be removed from him. It had even been suggested that it be given to Aberforth, if not removed completely. His political influence had dissolved, but he was still headmaster, this was still his school. Just!

In fact his position, even here, was becoming shaky. He knew he had lost control of the wards, many of the portraits and Ghosts would no longer keep him informed. The past headmasters, who had no choice but, to advise him, were not reassuring at all. It was certainly much harder to find out what was going on in the school. He no longer had young Ronald keeping him informed, could not even get a message to the boy to set up a line of communication, no matter how indirect. Hi only lifeline was Umbridge, and her actions so far had shown she was more likely to damage her own ability to gain information.

He was still physically weak and no longer powerfully magical, but he had information that ensured he held the key. Potter needed him, even if he was yet to realise it. Only Albums and Riddle knew about the Horcruxes, only he knew how many the dark Lord had made, only he knew about the one in the boys scar. The time was coming when Potter would need him, and he could be quite gracious in his victory. It was the one reassurance he seemed to have, he knew it was not enough, especially with the ascension of the wretched alliance interfering and his staff resisting his instructions regarding it. His plans were in tatters, and he could see only one course, he still needed to regain Potter, that in itself could restore so much to him.

Having Potter by his side again would give him control of the Alliance, restore his position both at the Ministry and here at the school, not to mention in society. He moved to his window and looked out over the lake, pondering his problem, attempting to find a solution. He watched as some of the students took to the water to swim, the Giant Squid teasing them from below with its tentacles, using another to splash others on the shore. His eyes wandered in contemplation, until his eyes fell on a hut, smoke rising from its chimney.

"Hagrid! Of course." He breathed as an idea formed.

His wand in hand, he cast a detection charm at the door of the gamekeepers home, pleased to see that it hit its target he quickly returned to his chair to recover from the effort. He would know the moment Potter visited his friend, know where he was, then he would confront the boy in the hut, Hagrid would not mind, the half Giant may not be the sharpest, but he was completely loyal. Potter would be forced to accept what Albus demanded, he knew that Hagrid would be furious if the boy had the nerve to defy him.

The minerals in the columns throbbed and glowed as the magical power poured into them strengthening the wards over the school, overcoming the effects of the attacks on them, and repairing themselves. As they gained in strength, drawing from those touching them, the section of the dome gained strength, the red, and black lights fading, for the most part, until they impacted one of the columns, when they blew apart and disappeared. They reduced in number quite quickly as the wards regenerated, and the dome grew brighter.

"It's working!" Ginny called. "It's getting easier already."

The others nodded in agreement! It had been like wading through thick mud as they had pushed with their Magic at first, but the resistance reduced each time one of the red lights was destroyed, more so when a black one was reduced to nothing.

"What's that?" One of the first years asked.

There was a hard black scar on the floor, that had appeared as the wards were gaining strength, Harry turned to look. It gave off an evil looking mist, which was confined to a room on the map, he watched as the mist swirled angrily, suddenly a shaft shot up from it and attacked the Dome, smoke pouring from it. Their task instantly became harder, and they strained to maintain what they had gained.

"It's there!" Harry cried out. "Dobby, tell Griphook it's in the come and go room, room for hidden things, hurry."

The Elf nodded seriously and popped away.

Dobby appeared next to Griphook. "Master Harry says there is another Dark fragment in the castle, it is in the room of hidden things created by the come and go room. It is fighting back, it must be dealt with quickly."

"This way!" Filius commanded and hurried to the door.

Griphook nodded and instructed a team to follow. "Weasley, Thorgun, it is as feared, take the container, the abomination shall require destroying urgently."

The two nodded and hurried away with the box that held the means to detect, summon, and remove the Horcrux from the object.

Griphook turned back to Dobby. " Tell them it shall be done, then wait in case further stubborn matters require direct action."

The elf nodded and popped away.

Arriving next to his Master, Dobby relayed the message.

"Good, let's hope it won't take long." Harry responded, concentrating on the tasks.

"Harry, Hogwarts has located other dark objects already." Ginny told him, knowing he was concentrating on trying to battle the Horcrux attack. "They shall be removed once the wards are fully restored, if they cannot be rendered useless."

He nodded. "Where will she send them?"

"The Chamber, for us to ensure they are destroyed."

"Hermione, ask Fawkes if he would take curse breakers there to destroy them."

The Phoenix appeared and sang, heartening them all.

Hermione nodded. "She says she will, Harry."

"Thank you, Fawkes. Dobby will you inform Griphook please?"

Once again the elf popped away, while Fawkes swept up, out of the cave and soared into the corridor, to arrive in the hospital wing, just in time to collect Minerva and two curse breakers. She Flashed away with them to the chamber of secrets, to await the objects.

The Horcrux was fighting hard, through the wards, Harry was fighting back while the rest poured their power into restoration to full strength of the protection of the area. He had told them all that if they became exhausted they were to relinquish their task, he felt, rather than saw, two of the first years collapse. Winky reappeared and whisked them off to the hospital wing where Poppy would look after them while their Magic replenished itself.

"Remember what I said, don't push until you collapse, break off and rest before you need the hospital wing." He reminded them, knowing they were keen not to fail this task.

Suddenly Harry felt the Horcrux increase its attack, as if desperate to be rid of him. He felt weak at the knees, almost losing concentration, had it noticed his momentary distraction? He felt a surge of power, the soul fragment fighting harder than ever against its destruction, but it also felt easier to fight back as if it was distracted and fighting more than those in the heart of Hogwarts. Although it felt easier, it was still tough relentless work to resist the soul fragment, he had to hold his focus now, he redoubled his efforts, then felt every thing around him begin to shake.

Authors notes:
Many thanks for your patience while I got this chapter ready, I do feel guilty that it has been so long and I am afraid to say I cannot predict how soon the next will be out. I have one more chapter in an advanced stage to work on and two more roughed while the rest are just outlined. Depending how I do with them and cope with the medical side of my life this year will dictate how soon I am able to get them completed to be published.
My thanks also for all those who have read and responded to this story so far, especially for the reviews, they cheer me up no end. I hope you have enjoyed this chapter and look forward to reading any reviews you leave.
Until next time.
Best wishes.
