Chapter 31: Tagetes
Flower Symbolism: grief, jealousy, pain, passion
Summary: Despite a passionate past few days…there is little time to relish in it all, with a look inside rather difficult emotions and a yearly memorial opening up old wounds. Subaru finds more strength to attend a painful….event, one he has missed for… quite a few reasons, with Kamui coming along, for moral support. Overcoming obstacles makes them grow stronger as a couple and perhaps…a few more follow up.
(In which I say "noo not Subaru" T.T I hate him having any more pain… though there is resolution and a chance for hope. Part of the healing process can involve acknowledging and sometimes diving into past pain and trauma. Of course, this varies a lot for different people, situations, etc etc etc…but for Subaru, this will help him grow and heal through the pain…Writing this is how I cope with Canon and the eternal hiatus of X;-;
Embrace
'It's been… a rough few days.'
Kamui reflects on this, images flowing through his mind swiftly and blurred. He cradles his tired lover into his arms. Their legs entangle perfectly, as though born to entwine.
Long elegant fingers brushed through dampened, green-black locks. He shakes his head, unable to persuade his beloved to properly towel off, before falling into bed… drained… weakened.
Now though the curl of Kamui's lips can't seem to falter. Not when he sees beautiful closed eyelids, long eyelashes and soft soothed breathing.
Though there are mixed emotions with Subaru's fingers curled into his shirt, squeezing tightly. This makes Kamui's whole being ache. All too easily he recalls the countless nights being on the other, Subaru comforting him with seemingly limitless patience and compassion. These moments it's bound to occur again as reminders of a more peaceful past and belated loved ones come to mind.
He takes it upon himself to cover and fluff his lover's soft raven locks. Fingers tangled in the hair, massaging the scalp.
Fingers moving from a circular motion, then forward, back, left to right. The soothing motion calms Subaru more, his grip on Kamui relaxing.
Kamui sighs. A long exhale fell from his lips, lingering yet with deep relief.
Caught up in the mix between, the cherished lover's holidays, draining assignments, and onmyou training… It was a rather difficult time.
Kamui blamed himself for not thinking more about events in Subaru's life.
While Kamui was sure there would be some remembrance ceremony of the loss he hadn't expected it to come so soon. He never asked for the timing of it all. The day Subaru's sister died.
For Subaru, the last two years have changed its plans for the annual ceremony.
First was the promised year, a time when Subaru and Kamui would have met for the first time.
Subaru, while keeping his distance at first, still came around to fulfill his role as one of the seven seals. Without knowing it, he was already opening his heart to Kamui more and more.
The decisive battle of the earth took over time and freedom for much else. All the while, Kamui struggled to simply breathe, heart, crushed by Fuuma's shift in character and Kotori's death.
Surely, Subaru wanted to stay with him a bit longer… if nothing else but to ensure Kamui wouldn't relapse.
And last year… Subaru spent even more time comforting him and his heartache…Kamui grit his teeth, thinking back.
Subaru constantly would hold, caress and kiss away every ounce of pain he could manage. No matter how impossible that may be, he never gave up, on healing and protecting Kamui's heart. To this day he continued.
There was always a kinship between them. Connecting through touch soon became as necessary as the air around them.
You're too kind at times… selfless. Kamui recalls.
Subaru did all of that without complaint or asking for anything in return. Night after night listening to Kamui cry out his pained longing and love for another man…while being in love with Kamui all the while.
Subaru had missed the past two years, to honor his sister's life… and be at the family ritual. Kamui didn't know if that was entirely a bad thing, mental health already waning without the need to open old wounds.
This year, things could be different, there would always be a pain of the past, but together they'd always manage.
Kamui never wanted to pry nor bring out old wounds… so never did ask of the details and time when Subaru's sister perished. But now he's certain he'll never forget…
Sorrow
Briiiing. Riiiing. Riiiing.
The phone sounded off, a constant sound more than anything else this morning.
Subaru picked up the phone, answering a few client's questions vaguely, then ending the call with a dejected sigh.
Violet-blue eyes moved curiously over to his beloved. As much as Kamui tried 'studying' it couldn't hold over the concern for his boyfriend. His chest ached, seeing the glistening eyes that wouldn't tear, we weren't allowed to fall.
Briiiiii-
Subaru quickly answered the next call, if nothing else to end the excessive ringing.
This call made Kamui stop his studies entirely. Subaru's tone shifted entirely, much softer yet dejected. Beautiful gem-colored eyes began to dim.
"Alright, I understand… thank you…" Subaru ended the last call more formally. Likely being the former Sumeragi head. As the phone is placed down, the current Onmyouji leader leans forward. With a final, broken sigh and breath, he slumps forward, arms folding on the desk in front of him.
It was all worrying. Subaru rested his head down between his arms, expression is hidden between them, hands anxiously running through locks of green-black.
"Subaru?" Kamui calls voice tender, and as sweetly as possible. With an equally gentle touch, he caresses his lover's shoulder blade, feeling tension. Violet-blue eyes wince feeling Subaru go still tense from his hold.
"Subaru…" Kamui murmurs, heart sinking by the second. He leans over the back of the chair, embracing the shivering man from behind. his arms around his lover as snug as possible.
"..." Silence again, Subaru only seeming to sink deeper inside.
It crushed Kamui's spirit, hearing only broken, labored breaths.
Now, for a third try. "Subaru!" Kamui insistently cries out his name, squeezing his lover almost painfully tight. His head rests on his lover's curved back.
Changing his angle, Kamui stands a little closer to Subaru's side, now able to embrace his lover more fully. Pained, Kamui traces butterfly kisses to the back of his lover's neck, whispering sweet nothings.
"S-Subaru… M-my Subaru M-…" Kamui's heart races, cheeks certainly flaring up for his words to come.
'You make it seem so easy.'
"My love." He coos, attempting to bring out that same emotion his lover did seemingly effortlessly, affectionate pet names always slipping from his lips enchantingly.
Kamui… embarrassed and flustered beyond belief but… finding it more than worth the effort.
"My perfect Subaru," he whispers, heart exposed entirely. He seals a kiss on his lover's shoulder, finally breaking through. Subaru relaxed into his hold, leaning into wherever Kamui's hands or lips met him.
"K-Kamui…" Subaru stumbles, barely peering up from his arms, seeing his precious person torn up, lips curved down, eyes watery, shaky, and about to break.
"Subaru…" Without having a clue what was going on, Kamui went full-on protector mode. He wrapped his boyfriend up into his arms, keeping him safe, head guided to rest over his racing heartbeat.
"What's wrong?" The question falls from his lips, so patient not demanding a time or even a response. Kamui rested his cheek on the crown of Subaru's head, lips curling softly at the silky hair tickling his face.
"I…" Subaru returns, attempts to speak, yet loses his breath entirely. Stealing a glance, two shivering, glossy eyes turn up. Seeing such soft orbs of violet glossy overcome with adoration, an angelic smile lifting an expression just drowning in love…
It all builds up. Everything Subaru's felt, the countless unspoken and painful emotions overflowing, manifesting to l trails of emotions from contrasting gold-emerald eyes.
All the pain, sorrow, anguish, guilt… fell into those cold tears. Each one was Wiped away by Kamui's thumb, lips brushing. On an odd impulse, licking away tears.
Even in this context, Kamui knew he was being affected, heart running wild, blushing.
Subaru's hands squeezed Kamui's soft legs, then brushed between sensitive thighs. The young man squeaked, legs spreading on instinct, embarrassingly fast, before being led to straddle his boyfriend's hips.
'You have to know by now… how this makes me feel.'
But the thought became dangerous… lighting a fire in Kamui's lower stomach. What if Subaru did know very well what he was doing, quite purposely… relishing in the reactions they brought.
Kamui bit his lips. He goes a little weak in the hold, hands steadying him upright, clasping Subaru's shoulders.
"It's… a day of re-..." Subaru finally found it difficult to breathe, shaking and burying himself into his lover's shoulder. It hadn't felt enough.
Kamui took it onto himself to find a more proper place of comfort. He slips off his lover's lap carefully, without giving a chance to doubt or worry, he quickly grasps Subaru's hands within his own. Not realizing his own strength, he easily lifts Subaru from the chair and onto his feet.
Before he can turn on his heel - silence breaks.
"It's…" Another attempt. Kamui squeezes his lover's hand. "It's a day… of remembrance." Subaru finally calms down enough to say.
"Remembrance," Kamui returns the solemn tone, gently, kissing his lover's head.
"It will be the ninth year of…" Subaru takes in a deepening breath. "H-honoring my sister since she …" He loses his voice, a storm of emotions dying to slip out behind broken eyes.
"Subaru…" Kamui holds him even tighter, embraces him even more fully, intimate as they are standing. "If you… choose to go… I'll be there right at your side." He reassures me. "Of course… it's your choice. I want you to do what's best for you."
"Kamui…" Subaru's heart stutters, eyes widening, feeling and taking in every ounce of pure devotion, and fidelity Kamui held towards him, his happiness.
"So whatever you choose," Kamui pauses, stealing the tiniest of kisses, smiling at the gentle press back. "I will be with you."
Green and gold orbs become dazed, fluttering for just a second. Then instinctively, the older male still manages to lace his fingers within Kamui's, even lifting their joint hands to his lips.
As much pain and anguish remain there is always an overwhelming sense of love, stronger than any emotion Subaru felt. This itself seems to be a miracle. One only Kamui is capable of.
A short silent walk to the bedroom follows. Kamui found he couldn't get there soon enough. With ease, a sense of growing strength, he brings them both to lie down, turning to their sides.
He leads them to their bedroom, intentions pure… despite this, Kamui finds himself perfectly fine if things do, in fact, steer from that here.
For right now, they fall into their patterns, only with light kisses, and a slow shedding of the cloth barriers between. Subaru's arms loop around Kamui's waist, while the latter holds a hand to the back of his head and shoulders. Being held, raw, exposed, and fully undressed… brings out natural, enchanting emotion.
Comfort
As painful as the event will be. It would only make their connection as a couple that much stronger.
They'd have to leave tomorrow…
Subaru had stayed close to Kamui's side for the entirety of the weekend. He wrapped up his smaller lover into his arms, Kamui flushed and buried in his chest.
Other times, Kamui sought him out, knowing the kind of pain as empathetic as possible, and expressing his protective, comforting side.
'If only I could hold you… away from all your pain just like this….' The thought passed through Kamui's mind. Not with the intention of a wish but the desire and strength to keep his love happy, comforted, and healing.
"H-"
Quite, shaken up and broken from the images of his sister from past ceremonies haunt his consciousness.
"Hokuto…."
Subaru dove in without shame, hesitation, or control. He wrapped his arms wound Kamui, holding him like a lifeline. Their legs entangled, no space between their bodies allowed.
Needing this intimacy, he buries further into his lover's chest, seeking that ethereal heartbeat, bringing him to the present, his light, his love, his hope. His… Kamui.
Acting more on instinct, he nuzzles Kamui's chest, hands roaming all across his lover's body, seeking proof this moment was all real. He had a reason.
Uncontrolled, the natural course took place. The presses of lips, varied kisses, and touches weren't held back in the slightest. As Subaru lost himself, kissing Kamui anywhere and everywhere he could reach.
Lips lingering and brushing unintentionally over very sensitive areas. Kisses lingered, deepening. Subaru tastes his salty tears as their lips connect.
His mouth clings to Kamui's neck and shoulder, finding that curve between.
Shamelessly, he buries himself into that sleek neck, breathing in the almost sinfully sweet pheromones directly. Like a miracle cure, Kamui's scent instantly calms his nerves. Soon after, lips took over, languidly and deeply kissing every centimeter around the sensitive neck and shoulders, latching to more reactive areas. Gentle yet lingering presses of lips to a sensitive throat, alongside his explorative touch, made his lover cry out.
"S-Subaru…" Kamui mewls his name, and it may as well be a sound from the heavens. Subaru's heart is certain there's nothing more ethereal.
A deep crimson blush takes over the beautifully milky complexion. If he had the energy, he'd ravish Kamui right here and now. His heart fluttered at how the action alone left a beautiful flush on Kamui's cheeks. But… he couldn't pull himself away from here, being in this embrace, not for a second.
The touch was more than Subaru had sought for a long time… not wanting to smother or draw away his beloved. But… he needed this now, heart on the mend.
Kamui let him in for as long as needed, never a question asked or complaint made. Occasionally, he breathed Subaru's name, even… singing a lullaby, learned from his mother. It's one he hadn't yet thought of in well over a decade…yet resurfaced now.
With Subaru like this, the melody comes to mind, his lips gently whisper the song, striking Subaru's heart deeply, leaving him breathless, but in the best way.
Subaru was needing that connection, warmth, and solace, Kamui gave everything that he was. Heart, mind, body, and soul, whatever his Subaru desires.
Process
The 9th Year. A funeral. A ritual to honor Hokuto's life wishing her to feel nothing but peace in the afterlife.
Here they were on the road again, a lengthy drive to Kyoto upcoming.
Subaru sat up close, right against Kamui, their legs brushing against each other. Even the usual bit of distance would be far far too much on a day like this.
'But you can't be at peace… Because of me.'
Subaru's mind sinks through such broken thoughts. He rests his weary head to the side, weight sinking and supported by Kamui's shoulder. His mind's eyes long engraving the desperation in his sister's voice, all while she worked to bring him back.
'Or are you watching me now? Can you be happy, without those worries? knowing. .. I've found that precious person I needed to protect…'
Gentle little kisses press the side of Kamui's neck, shoulder, and those junctions in between. Feather-light but never failing to impact the world's savior. The beautiful flush of scarlet on light cheeks would be adored. Today he can't look up, closing his eyes and breathing in Kamui's scent.
'Even in the afterlife you still did everything to bring me back….and I… '
"Ow!" Kamui chirps, wincing, causing his lover to pause his ministrations. His hand goes paler from how tightly Subaru grasps his hand.
There's little strength to glance up, eyes still closed, Subaru breathes warmly, "I'm sorry…" A consoling, apologetic, kiss falls to his lover's neck.
"N-no…" Kamui returns, voice equally sorrowful, showing guilt. 'I didn't mean to react like that… ' He thinks on this, only wanting to let Subaru do as he likes, seeking comfort. "I'm alright just caught off guard."
Long elegant fingers thread through Subaru's long black locks. "It's you I'm worried about."
"Kamui…" Subaru whispers, breath far too warm, sweet, to his lover's body.
His usual considerations and worries are gone now. The raw need to feel, touch, and breathe in everything Kamui took over. His very own breath of life.
The younger male shivers, sensitive to kisses on his neck, shoulder, and throat. While his mind processes the reason and intentions. He blames these 'messy' feelings on teenage hormones… and it being Subaru.
Their kindly chauffeur rolled up the window long ago. Privacy between the front and back seats, one he was quite used to giving.
"We'll be arriving at the Sumeragi Estate very shortly," the chauffeur announces, calm, quiet, and sensitive to the mood.
"Okay, thank you," Kamui answers, watching in admiration at the lush and vibrant greenery, expanding into a path, as the luxurious yet very traditional estate begins to surface.
"Hey," Kamui says gently, squeezing his hand on his own. "We're here."
He relaxes, feeling a head-nodding against his neck.
"Let's go unpack our things first…" Kamui offers, providing his lover all the time and solace needed. The 'ritual' of sorts wouldn't begin for at least two more hours.
"Ok…" Subaru murmurs weakly, allowing himself to be brought to his feet. Their light packing makes the journey to the guest house easy.
Kamui urges his tired love to rest, he's resilient, not willing to lie down without his most precious person.
Subaru mimics his lover's actions closely. He takes a few clothes, trinkets, what appears to be some charms, incense… and…
"Oh," Kamui's violet orbs zero in on a small liquid bottle, buried amongst the toiletries. He hadn't expected much of anything these upcoming days…not after the ceremony began and wounds opened up.
'Although Subaru was passionate before we left…. '
"I-I'm not… expecting anything…" A tired pause falls out, and he looks at Kamui pensively. "you've already done so much for me… It's … just become a habit to..." Subaru flusters, voice breaking out, seeming to try and clear his case, as though it were something selfish.
"Subaru…" Kamui steals a kiss, hoping to reassure his love. He smiles longingly, taking pride in the flustered, vulnerable Subaru that only he could see.
It did make sense… it was a bit rare to spend more than a few days without falling into bed together. Comfort sex…was far from being new for them.
Physical touch… it's how they always connected after all. Bodies speaking, understand in ways their words couldn't convey.
"It's not like that. I'm more than okay with it…." Even right now. Kamui falls into admittance, biting his lip with a not-so-guilty curve on his lips. "I was just surprised, I know you are going through a lot and will need your rest… but if things happen then of course …I'm happy with it."
This time Kamui blushes a beautiful rose pink. Subaru brushes the back of his fingers to Kamui's cheek, gaze growing fonder by the second.
"I love you," Subaru professes, gentle, open, and full of the most emotion he can muster now. Though pained, a tiny smile forms up.
"I love you, Subaru…" Kamui leans over, kissing that tiny smile. "So so, so much you know that? " He hugs his boyfriend tightly, wishing to shield him from further storms.
For now, their lips meld, meet and linger over each other. Connecting, again and again, unable to stop the pull between. The caress fills with longing, need, and an overwhelming emotion that has bound their hearts and souls for a lifetime.
Falling back upon the plush bed, Kamui pulls Subaru along with him, letting him lay over him. Accepting and loving everything that may come between.
Ritual
Walking across the beautiful Sumeragi estate was vastly different from before. Members of the clan, wore traditionally dark funeral clothing, contrasting with the white robes many wore for their profession.
There was no way to completely take the pain or lift the somber mood away. Seeing Subaru in familiar dark clothing puts Kamui through a loop. The black coat was still different but still too closely resembled the previous Sakurazukamori style…Fuuma as well… but he pushed the thought aside. Not the time to reflect on either of their
Subaru deserved his all and complete attention. Kamui's only real desire is to be here, right now, completely in support and never letting go.
Their fingers laced perfectly, missing pieces of a broken puzzle, coming together to become whole. The clasp is natural. Kamui can see, in his mind's eye, them both holding tightly to each other's hand, many years into the future.
From the entrance to the exit, Kamui never once lets go of Subaru's hand. Caressing, soothing, and squeezing tight. A reassuring squeeze back follows, holding to Kamui needingly
Walking past the various gardens, temples, and koi ponds, they encounter numerous Onmyouji, often bowing their heads in respect, as their esteemed leader walks by.
Subaru doesn't give a response, the words of sympathy and condolences only sting. He does manage to look them in the eye, nodding slightly in response. An action deemed warmer by clan members than any year before.
Several elder members glance at the pair's clasped hands. Many eyes fall on Kamui with a sense of fondness and gratitude.
Their closeness garnered attention. Several young women were waiting, working around the shrines. They stopped immediately upon seeing the couple.
"Master Sumeragi," They had addressed, bowing very formally, and watching as their leader gave a weak smile before moving on.
Kamui tried to respond in his lover's steed with a nod or smile.
When assumed to be out of earshot, the professional demeanor slipped, and several giggles flew out.
"Oh my gosh!" The first voice squeed.
"They're adorable… " One woman spoke in a hushed voice, flushing and holding a hand to her lips.
They continued with their chatter, words not even considered by Subaru, so lost in his mind. Kamui wasn't the same.
The gossiping voices followed up.
"So that's why… Master Sumeragi seems so much lighter."
"Yep, I think the reason is obvious."
"I think it's sooo cute. The way they hold hands.
"That person must be the one being brought into the family."
The voices continued merrily, fading as the pair walked further towards their destination.
"Aw~ then he must be Master Sumeragi's wife?"
"Ah, but he's a boy right?"
"Yeah, But still!"
"Mnn…" Kamui's lips seep out a little whine, cheeks painting a beautiful pink. It brings his lover out of his rumination for a moment.
At the least, it brought a curl to Subaru's sinking lips. He squeezed Kamui's hand in reassurance, leaning close to press a few innocent kisses on the top of his head, reaching his free hand across to pet his lover's head.
Thus earning several more squeals from their admirers. All of that was simply background noise. Thankfully, they seemed to be approaching their destination, a quieter garden path leading to a tall and eloquent shrine.
The ritual ceremony breaks the expectations, Kamui held. Everything takes place outdoors, amongst the various beautiful flowers, coming into bloom as they enter spring. The sun is shining down, warm, comforting with all going on.
"I'm glad you're here," Lady Sumeragi's gentle voice calls out to her grandson. It's the first voice outside of Kamui he is responsive to.
"Grandmother…" Subaru greets, voice shaky, and unstable as he hears the name of his sister spoken by another relative. His gold and emerald orbs shift a little, finding fault in himself for Hokuto's death.
Of course, his loved ones knew Subaru had suffered greatly. One could easily feel how he loved his twin sister immensely and was absolutely not responsible for the actions and decisions leading to her death. If only Subaru could see it the same.
"Subaru," She soothes, voice softer, and more nurturing than her grandson's love has heard before. Which made Kamui wonder. Her arms reach out, and with warm emotion, Subaru leans down, to gently hug his grandmother from her wheelchair.
"Naturally, I am glad, relieved you've come to accompany our Subaru," Lady Sumeragi responds with mirth. Her arms stretch out towards the young man, not pressuring, simply a welcome gesture, accepting.
Kamui hesitates, uncertain, as he looks back towards Subaru. Closeness which came naturally around his beloved always felt different from others. Subaru smiles, an assured nod telling him 'It's alright.'.
The young man whips his head, hoping to shake off his nerves. He leans down to give his boyfriend's grandma and light hug, a small touch to show, I'm here. As they both were, ensuring Subaru would be alright.
"Young Kamui, please know, I already consider you family," She assured him, seemingly pleased and convinced of this notion.
Kamui's eyes raise his heart, skipping a beat. "You…" He squeaks, feeling a very prominent pounding in his chest. Turning back, he sees his boyfriend, coughing into a closed hand, willing the flush away, and turning to hide the melting smile, which felt inevitable at this subject.
"Kamui has been…" Everything. "An immeasurable support for me." Subaru chooses to sway the topic, towards one broader, his adoration at everything Kamui was to him.
Kamui lets out a tiny whine, one not too different from their cat. He hurriedly hides his burning face in Subaru's long coat sleeve. He clings tightly as though he could wipe away the flush.
Lady Sumeragi begins with a bit of soft laughter. "The Ritual will begin shortly. Now is a good time to see the shrine."
"Right, thank you…" Subaru softly expresses a bow of his head. He squeezes Kamui's hand extra tight as they approach.
With fondness and a sense of hope, the older woman watches the couple. The light returns to her grandson a little more every time she sees him.
"Um… so this is…." Kamui attempts to respond beyond that but loses his voice. The raw aura around the shrine everything put into it… and that old picture all of it becomes overwhelming. He shivers.
They further approach the vast and elegant shrine, surrounded by flowers… beautiful pastel shades of pink, purple, and white. The photo is framed first, with a layer of feathery yellow feathers trimmed and angled to create the perfect border around the photo. A single yellow feather, with a bright red center, sits right below. Surrounding this all is an outer layer of flowers. A blend of aster and chrysanthemums. Soft yellow Easter Lilies, snow-white Lily flowers. Roses. Peonies… a rainbow of flowers.
The colors and sheer quantity of floral decors, candles, and various incense, make it really stand out and shines. To Subaru, the exuberance, and bright aesthetic feels completely Hokuto.
'Sister…' Subaru's mind processes ruefully, again squeezing the hand in his own a little too tight.
His gaze falls to focus on the photo within the frame. It houses a photo of a young 16-year-old Hokuto, smiling cheerily at the camera. Seemingly so blissful, in her colorful yellow and pink ensemble with an elaborate hat, covered with lace and daisies, all personally designed.
Subaru briefly recalls the endless hours his sister would put into their outfits.
"Subaru…" Kamui calls out, hand loosening from the hold to tug on his lover's sleeve. The movement gets his lover's attention.
"K… amui…" Subaru breathes in slowly, quickly snatching up Kamui's hand again making said beloved's lips curl.
"I think… something is starting…" Kamui recalls, head angling off to the side, where a soft melody plays.
"Alright…" Subaru whispers, clasping the precious hand in his own tightly.
They walk towards the right side of the garden, where a few family members gathered. The pair stay back gaining more space from others. Subaru lifts their interlaced hands and turns them so the back of Kamui's hand faces him. Kisses pepper over the soft skin, every little knuckle, where they connected.
Kamui's gaze remains fixed, despite his thundering heartbeat. His lover returns affectionately, not far from his closest family members.
"I'm…so glad… having you with me," Subaru voices, finally letting their hands fall, after one lingering kiss. "With you…it feels it'll be alright."
Kamuis's eyes swirl with a watering emotion, feeling his heart tug along with his hand. He nuzzles his head on his lover's arm. "Subaru…"
The possessive way Subaru held his hand, close, brought a very pleasant warmth running down his spine. The often intense and deep gazes falling over Kamui, left him breathless, being held… precious, by the one he loves so so much.
Off to the side are a series of white benches, several rows, to hold a dozen or so family members. The front is reserved for the closest family. Lady Sumeragi sits beside the edge of the bench, an empty spot, likely saved for Subaru and his (truthfully) rumored lover.
On the opposite edge of the bench, sits an elegant-looking couple. Their gaze was broken, darkened, and watering, just able to keep from spilling over the edge. On more than one occasion, Kamui can feel their gaze towards himself and Subaru, before turning away and back down sorrowfully, as though they held no right to do anymore.
Another display, smaller, holds a picture, a relaxed Hokuto holding up her latest design, delight evident.
Subaru's spare hand falls to his chest. His lips curl down, sinking with his heart…as those memories resurface. Her warmth, kindness, laughter, those over-the-topic antics all of the memories came flooding in, faster than his heart knows how to handle.
A lingering mix of sorrow, love, and longing… threatens to spill, a storm breaking out between orbs of deepening emerald and gold.
Kamui guides Subaru closer, he keeps their hands laced. His head falls to his lover's shoulder, he whispers a few soft murmurs. Relief floods when Subaru's head tests upon his own.
Standing in front were a few elders of the clan, dressed formally, surrounding and some chanting a few symbolic words, a ring of light, soft almost transparent surrounds the smaller shrine and soon the main one. Golden streams of light dispersing and rising to the air sparkling like fairy dust.
Kamui's eyes and face must have given away his confusion. He feels all too warm breath, right in the middle of his ear.
"It's… like a message…. To send wishes of good fortune for… the deceased." Subaru explains, terribly soft… and shaken. His tender voice barely breaks near the end.
Kamui takes his spare hand to guide his lover back, resting his weary head upon his own. Subaru's grandmother sits not far from them, maneuvering her way towards the front 'stage' speaking a few honoring words.
"Today… marks the 9th year since the loss of our dear Hokuto…" Lady Sumeragi begins, voice calm, eloquent, in contrast to the flood of emotion glazing over her eyes. "This time is not meant to fall to despair but meant to honor her life, and bring out hope, and love, to give her continued peace in the afterlife…"
And Gods… Kamui was relieved Subaru wouldn't be made to go up there, speak on and open up even more agonizing wounds.
There remained another couple who came up. The woman with long deep raven locks and enchanting emerald orbs. The man beside her held soft, elegant features, eyes a softer amber. Pained curls fall to their lips.
They remain silent, seemingly broken beyond belief. Once more. Again, Kamui catches the tearful gaze falling on him.
A short, concise prayer follows. The couple speaks only of the joy and brightness Hokuto brought to everyone's life.
Subaru's grandmother takes over, waving the shuddering pair to their seat. With a few more lines, speaking solely of hope, honor, and love for Hokuto to be at peace...
As they take their seat, their eyes once again fall to Subaru. The first portion of this ceremony winds down. This time Kamui turns up at his lover, whispering in his ear.
"They are… relatives right? I keep seeing them look at you…" Kamui informs tone worried, quiet…apprehensive.
"That makes sense… to myself… and Hokuto…" Subaru shakes his head, eyes closing tight. "They're our… my parents."
Kamui's eyes widen tremendously at the declaration, mind racing. Knowledge of his Subaru updating, questions forming, on another life factor assumed to be shared.
'Raised by your grandmother… living just with your sister I had assumed otherwise'
"What?" Kamui squeaks, barely keeping his voice down to detract too much attention.
"My parents," Subaru repeats, lips curling up bittersweet, dual-toned eyes quivering. He heaves a long, pained sigh.
"So… they're alive…?" Kamui whispers to his lover, blaming himself, never asking. Simply assuming Subaru and he had suffered the same parental loss, their life already shared such parallels. "I'm sorry… I always assumed…"
Subaru shook his head. "It's not your fault." A tender squeeze reassures his love. "I never said anything… our relationship is a bit… estranged."
"Oh, I see," Kamui replies as neutrally as possible, the somber feeling still slips through.
"I'll tell you more later…." Subaru promises to see the furrowed brow, pursed lips, and sense of perplexion on his beloved's face.
'I let them down as well… failing to save her. ' He can't return the sorrowful and anguished gazes. This guilt-ridden sentiment is long engraved into his heart.
Only time… and the source of hope beside him, could perhaps sway that misguided thought.
Every family member then takes their turns again, prays, and pays respects to the shrine. Subaru hangs back with Kamui, needing to break away.
"I… am not trying to pry…"Kamui breathes out, breaking the silence. Seeing that they have a bit more distance away, he leans in close. Tender, plush lips seal and caress Subaru's, innocent yet still so addicting, especially when Subaru returns the quick, discreet kisses.
"It seems things are clearing up…" Kamui notes glancing over towards the main shrine, relatives now gathering together, discussing among themselves. Leaving the place unoccupied.
"Okay…" Subaru only says, lips soothing over Kamui's temples. A tiny pained curl comes to his lips…the desire to smile in Kamui's present always rivaling the pain inside trying to prevent it.
Linking their hands, intimate, so very loving, and… honestly catching more attention than just Subaru's parents. But… the looks to them are so kind… compassionate.
Their love was not quite traditional, being the same sex, and having that age gap. While not entirely expected, neither words nor the emotion in their eyes speaks of negativity. Relief, hope, and a sense of peace takes over.
No one dares to nor wishes to take away the very source of their leader's happiness.
They are given the time, quiet, and privacy to 'speak' at the shrine.
"Hokuto…" Subaru's voice slips barely a whisper. His hand lingers towards the picture frame, hoping to touch, to reach into the past.
'I wish that… where you are…you can be happy… ' He reflects on the informal wish, knowing the dangers but still holding to this. Hoping the desire from his heart can be a reality.
'I hope you can one day, one lifetime at least… meet with Kamui, to see the happiness he gives me…' Subaru's further thoughts slip out, evident by the blush and watering eyes looking up at him.
"Please…" Subaru begins, hands pressing together in a traditional prayer fashion. A few soothing chants fall from his lips, mixed in with words of hope and love.
A spell, a prayer, offering peace. Despite not knowing the words… or methods. Kamui now closes his eyes, hoping to grant his lover's belated twin, all the happiness beyond this realm.
Subaru loses his breath, looking at the tender… sincere gesture. His heart skips a beat… reminding him he's fallen that bit harder.
Honor
The daylight seemed to end much sooner than expected. Perhaps, they had gotten lost in time, not noticing as the sun continued to set.
There were many ways to honor past loved ones. This one had a sense of beauty and maybe one day… a bit of closure. Kamui is brought further into the Sumeragi world.
He easily finds his heart further swayed and touches… wonders if he could ask Subaru to give out the same blessings…to his mother.
Now, upon the outskirts of the estate, lies a calming, deep blue river. The stars and moon reflect perfectly below, as though they have fallen there.
Even more clan members participate in this ritual. As small boats are sailed. surrounded by elegant lanterns, an unlit candle within the center. All gathered by the edge of the water.
Subaru turns to Kamui, holding his hand within his own, placing a small slip of paper, much like a charm seeming to hold enchanting energy.
"What's this?" Kamui blinks, then finds a small inked pen placed next to it.
"They are to send blessings beyond," Subaru explains, writing down the first few characters on his own. "words of love, gratitude, and blessings are written on the boats and charms. After which… they tied to the lanterns sent off… and said to be delivered…to the one whose… ."
"Subaru… " Kamui calls his name tenderly. His hand flushes over Subaru's featherlight, only parting to write out a few thoughts which come to mind.
Subaru finds his words overflowing, writing, coming out faster than his mind can process. Emotions all too raw and natural quickly fill the paper. He notices curious violet eyes peering over and decides to show the message to his beloved.
'Please, be at peace. You've been the best sister I could ever hope for. I love you immensely… I hope you find happiness, love, and be free from how I worry you…'
With a small orb of golden energy, a spell ignites binding the charm to the side of the lantern.
"You're…. Perfect," Kamui coos in a very intimate whisper, already forgetting where they were…but it wasn't as though things were a secret.
"Kamui…" Subaru's loving tone is only brought out to the way. He caresses his face, kissing his beloved soundless, the back of his hand shielding their joined lips.
For the first time today, they allow the touch to linger. With, their faces covered, and their little corner of privacy, they simply breathe each other in. Their kisses are soft, quiet, but continuous. Starving lips move needingly, melding, caressing, and pulling the other back in.
The familiar bliss takes place, like Subaru and Kamui very slowly part, eyes lost on one another glossy and sparkly.
Finally, Subaru leans in, their foreheads kissing, leaning upon each other. Soft breaths fall over the couple's lips.
After a little moment of silence…
"So what did you write?" Subaru asks with an innocent curiosity.
"Ah-ah… I…* Feeling apprehensive Kamui burns a deep scarlet, and a surprised squeak escapes.
"I just… was saying thank you… that you know… she brought you happiness," Kamui murmurs quickly, still hiding the message in his closed hand.
He knows, eventually, he has to release his grip, allowing Subaru to help bind his wishes to the other side of their lantern. Thankfully, his boyfriend doesn't pry or press for more.
"You can see it, though… it's embarrassing…" Kamui whispers, promising to share his words, and blessings soon after.
The sentiment alone melts Subaru, who wraps an arm around his lover's waist, looking towards the vast stars, shining down.
With a few resounding words and chanting prayers, everyone begins to take their place at the edge of the river bed.
One by one, the small shining boats release onto the river. Their blessings to those beyond, speaking and hoping to reach out. Eyes linger, watching them set off.
"Now there are the lanterns as well… Subaru recalls, kneeling to come back up to his feet. He pulls Kamui along. "They're all beautiful, hand-painted, I think you'll like them."
One last part remains, not far from the riverbed. Several assistants bring in carts covered with beautiful, handmade lanterns, each having its picture, painted on the side.
"The boats send blessings through the river, these lanterns…are meant to reach above to the heavens giving out love and wishes," Subaru explains then strolls over towards the cart. "They're also something… Hokuto really loved to see."
A pause renders a short silence, the feeling conveyed between the pair beyond words. The gentle, tiny smile and glistening gaze, connect them, revealing the pain, happiness, sorrow, and countless emotions blustering inside.
"Then I'm sure she'll love to see these… even now," Kamui affirms almost whimsically, feeling a ray of hope within, lighting his own night sky.
Subaru's eyes raise, shivering, feeling and hearing the certainty with those words. "I hope so." He breathes out and gestures towards the various lanterns being passed out. "You can pick one for us."
"Oh," Kamui pinkens, grasping the implication, those closely bound release their lantern and blessings as one, two hearts have become one. Several older couples gradually hold onto both sides of the lantern before releasing it, allowing it to fly. But… as far as Kamui could see… that was only couples…there was so much he didn't know, like the significance Subaru's family held for doing so…
All too flustered and nervous, Kamui quickly reaches for the design that strikes him, an array of beautiful purple butterflies painted elegantly all around. "I like this one."
"It's decided then," Subaru murmurs, already knowing his lover's choice would be remarkable. He follows with a soft glance before whispering a few sweet nothings mixed with words of gratitude in his lover's ear.
Acknowledging the lantern more carefully, he confirms with his eyes, what his heart already knows. "It's… beautiful…" He softens, guiding them near the center of the garden, where everyone gathers.
"I… guess… it is…" Kamui finds himself more connected. "It's hard to disagree when you say it like that…" He and his lover hold onto one side of the lantern. Something only done by the older married couples within their clan or those who appear devoted to each other for a lifetime.
After the sound of healing hopeful prayer, a are given the go to begin.
"Kamui…" Subaru murmurs, brushing their temples together. Slowly their fingers slip from the top of the painted shade.
"Yes?" Kamui calls sweetly, feeling Subaru's hands move to the side, gliding over Kamui's.
"Thank you…" Subaru professes, kissing the crown of his beloved's head. "For being here."
Kamui smiles at this, sliding his fingers up, pressing between the slits of his love's hands, a perfect match."There's nowhere else I'd rather be."
Kamui and Subaru release their lanterns, hopes, and blessings into the sky. Countless others decorate the night sky. A feeling of hope takes over, gradually, healing.
"Kamui…" Subaru coos, so tenderly, as he embraces his love, arms snuggly surrounding the smaller form, before. falling into him. His closed eyes rest on Kamui's shoulder, burying himself within.
"Subaru," Kamui returns the call, arms encircling protectively around his beloved. He is sensing the need for a break, to breathe, and to have that space.
"Let's head back for the night." Kamui's offer comes out, kindly yet insistently. Taking Subaru's hand, he leads them back to the 'guest home', before another word is spoken.
Need
From the turn of the knob to the quite literal act of falling into bed, Kamui never left his grieving boyfriend's side. Their fingers always interlace while lips connect and reconnect, over and over again. They act soft, pure, and comforting, as they wound up entangled upon the bed.
"K-Kamui!" Subaru's cries slip out, lips trembling. His lover kindly presses their mouths together, kissing and lingering until the trembling stops.
"I'm here," Kamui ensures, a promise he'd be making countless times this evening. "I'm not going anywhere."
Nestled together under the covers of the soft bed, Subaru and Kamui became tangled up. The latter cradled his lover's head, letting him lie on him. This scene mirrored the intimacy when they left for Kyoto.
"I… I…. H-Hokuto…" Cries of his sister's name flow out. Cradled delicately by his beloved, Subaru holds close, entangling their legs, bodies flushed, bound as close as possible.
Kamui's lips quiver, orbs glisten, while a pang strikes his core. His lover shaking in the hold, murmuring a few undeciphered but apologetic words… before warm tears fall slowly, then rushing out.
"She's…gone…." Subaru whimpers, the fact aching more than ever. Old wounds and memories returning.
"I know," Kamui's voice soothes.
"I… it's my f-faul-"
"Shhh," Kamui hushes before the last syllable is muttered. "You must know that's not the truth." Uncertain of what comforting and true words he could offer. It wouldn't ever truly be 'alright' nor would the pain fade out completely. He promises once again " I'm here with you now my Subaru … " Said man's Hands cling and tangle up, and already dampening shirt.
"Take all the time you need," Kamui whispers, letting his love nuzzle his chest, before tears flood. Seemingly endless drops of emotion, raining down, unable to be released until this moment. Where it was just the two of them.
Subaru was alone with the one person he knew he could trust his heart with completely. Shivering, vulnerable in Kamui's arms, he gave in, allowing the repressed tears to fall freely. His hand clutched and twisted into the cloth… but the thin fabric… felt too distancing.
"Can… I… take this off?" Subaru requests, voice so tender, honest. The very tone indicates the meaning of the request was different from the norm.
"...Y-yes…" Kamui swallows, reminding himself that this was unlikely to turn into something more… physical. His lover's hands slipped under his shirt, making him shiver, biting his lip.
With practice, nimble fingers easily undo every single button, cool air rushing in. Kamui leans up, arms back, allowing the shirt to slip off onto the ground.
Needingly, Kamui holds tightly to the front of the dark somber dress shirt. Truly, and maybe selfishly he finds himself glad to slip his hands under the fabric, undo every piece and toss the top haphazardly off their bed.
A feeling of relief encompasses him, seeing his lover's soft, warm skin… no longer cloaked in the all-black attire which spoke nothing but grief.
Subaru needed this time now, to unwind, and feel. He wasted no time, no hesitation undoing the button on the top
"Ahn… th-that's a bit…" Kamui holds a hand to his lips. He understood his boyfriend's intentions well enough. Yet, the touch was still so warm, insistent, and a little possessive… certain he belonged right here. Kamui couldn't help but react, body rocking slightly, as hands brushed down his sides, and legs and removed every last bit of clothing.
Subaru dove in completely, kissing all over Kamui's open chest and stomach, before returning to the still and tightening embrace. Intentions becoming… even more unclear.
The touch was one of a lover… but just shy of being entirely sensual. Kamui wrapped his arms around Subaru's shoulders, his head laid to the comforting chest, giving in… as they fell between being one held and to hold. The thundering heartbeat he hears makes Kamui question if Subaru is even aware of how he's reacting.
Kamui's legs went subconsciously to tangle around his lover. His nose squinted, the feeling of the dark dress pants, against his nude body, the feeling too firm and lacking the needed warmth in return.
"Let's take these off… as well," Kamui insists, sweetly, trying not to flush at how easily things could develop here. He couldn't tear his eyes off, not with the quick work his lover made of him.
Upon, moving to undress, Subaru frowned, sulking at even the few inches away he needed to be to undress. Subaru hurriedly lifted his hips, stripping away the last layer of clothes between them. Immediately, he flushed to Kamui's side, entangling their legs and resuming their embrace.
Every part of each other could be felt so so easily…. So right, and somehow, holding each other never failed to bring these heart-skipping feelings to the surface.
Perhaps that needs to truly be connected, the raw skinship, embrace…
"I love you, Subaru," Kamui professes, kissing his lover's cheeks, and nuzzling their noses.
"My Kamui…" Subaru's breath hitches the sudden affection returned and words of love rang so beautifully in his ears. "I love you…" He seals their lips together, locking them warm and firm together. "I am never letting you go." 'I… couldn't recover from losing you. '
"Subaru," Kamui whispers, eyes widened to the concern and fear with those words. "I'm here with you, yours. Nothing will change that."
Satisfied and warmed by words they remain cuddled up, bare to each other in every way, sleeping for an emotionally drained night.
The first signs of dawn drawing into the room led Kamui to wake up. Adoringly, he caressed his beloved's cheek.
"My Subaru," Kamui thinks, 'I'm glad you could get some rest. "Good night."
The thought comes fondly. Precious and silent moments maybe hours fly by. Kamui brushes through every strand of his lover's silky head.
—- Intimate:::::_
A turbulent night of emotions earned the two a good night's rest. Entirely exposed to each other, embracing beneath the sheets… it was everything.
Neither believed they could be used to such raw intimacy, closeness, and connection people spend their whole lives seeking yet never quite reach.
And so… morning reigned in like the breath of life, safety, connection, the bliss of a new beginning. Awakening leaves them becoming consciously aware of just how right this feeling can be.
"Good Morning~" Kamui greets, eyelids parting gradually. He looks up to see his lover stirring.
Subaru's eyes open slowly, greeting the dawn. Vivid gold and emerald eyes focus on Kamui. There's far more than just the light fluttering feelings of affection welling inside. Eyes explore Kamui in his natural state and see how they're tangled up as one.
No, his emotions now run far deeper. Dual colored orbs linger, tracing every curve and edge of Kamui's body. Pupils dilate, creating more and more desirous darkness, overwhelming the gold and emerald rings around it.
"I love you… are you-mmm!" Kamui loses his breath, as his lips are taken before he can utter another word. Before he can think. Without any warning, he falls completely into the feeling.
An endless storm of emotions began running rampant inside Subaru. Countless deepened emotions overflow from the last 24 hours. Anguish and longing linger on but become outshined by a deep passionate need towards the one who stayed by his side through it all.
Kamui's eyes couldn't stay open a second longer. His lover's eyes follow suit, beautifully fluttering as the kiss was taken much deeper. Though slow, there's a desire flaring, Kamui finds his mouth completely plundered, tongue brushing all along his lips before slipping deeply between plush, welcoming lips.
Connecting them deeper, and keeping that kiss intact they fall to another very intimate position. Kamui finds himself on his back, lips completely ravished.
All the sensations rush in, waterfalling through joined hearts. Quickly, deep french-kisses add upon touches, touches become far more erotic and slip lower….
"Mnnn," Kamui cries out softly. He feels his lover's lubricated fingers entering slowly. When did he manage to do that? There isn't time to overthink things…Subaru pauses his motion, fingers simply grazing the entrance, he looks up towards his lover, now realizing how lost he became in this feeling. Kamui looks fondly to his beloved, assuring him he was perfectly alright…and with everything.
At the assurances, nimble fingers dance and curl within a welcoming entrance. And before Kamui can take another breath he feels his lover entering so languidly and impossibly deep, reaching parts inside he never knew could feel this much.
"Subaruuuu~Mmmmnnn," Kamui partially mewls and whimpers, all sounds greedily being swallowed up by his lover's lips. Subaru is already 'striking' him at his most sensitive points, blissfully deep angles, and all right from the start.
This connection, touch, and kiss somehow, felt so very new, special. A very familiar and beloved position, turned even more euphoric, deep, and connecting.
The rocking of their bodies begins at a steady rate, a motion feeling like no other. Unhurried, precise, and with a rhythm contrasting with the rapid pace of their hearts.
Kamui could feel everything as deeply as possible, the motion so tenderly lingering. He couldn't decide if his heart or body were more seduced at this point.
"Sub-" Kamui begins, breathless, having the smallest of breaks before his lips are captured, ravished entirely: lower lip taken captive by a pair of insistent lips, tongues entering, entwining. Their lips keep close, moving to crash into each other again and again with new angles. Certainly, he'd feel his lips tingling days from now, his lover barely releasing them enough to catch their breaths before joining back together.
Subaru's touches only left him further into oblivion. Amorously, he felt tender hands grasping him everywhere and with such certainty. The touch is possessive and natural, hands moving without hesitation or doubt.
Kamui couldn't help any of this screaming into his lover's mouth. His lover lies on top of him, keeping his sensitive and dripping region between their stomachs, captive. The motion only added to the pleasure, Kamui felt his most pleasurable spots covered and taken by his lover's form.
"Subaru…" Kamui groans, having a break between heated kisses. Subaru catching his breath, eyes revealing such a passionate and feverish look… only added to the arousing moments.
Aside from the pace being slower than imagined, every scene from Kamui's fantasies becomes real. Now, the pace makes him reinvent his ideals of passionate lovemaking. An intoxicating blend of deepening romance, and eros build the heat inside even further. The fluttering feelings blend within a hardening intensity.
Kamui feels Subaru everywhere…. His own body felt as though it were completely taken and given to his lover to do everything he liked.
Of course, all Subaru did was devote himself to bringing out the most pleasurable emotions in his lover. For Kamui's pleasure to be placed above his own. The actions only make Kamui's eyes roll back, seeing stars, and losing himself in a world of just the two of them.
Neither could get enough. Kamui knew for a certain part of this was needed by Subaru to feel assured and attached, an emotional drive above all else. Yet, that didn't quell any of the passion or fire he felt, adoring being loved on like this.
While not in a dominant position… Kamui couldn't help but participate touch and moving with his loved one as much as possible. He kissed with a fiery passion, happily allowing his healing lover to indulge in ravishing kisses. Fingertips dug into Subaru's back, keeping him close.
Kamui felt the need to close around Subaru's hips, wrapping his legs around tight. Though hands sliding from his thighs and calves kept him open, spread for his lover to do anything he wanted. He knew he was dripping there… at just the thought. The surrendering of all control.
"Kamui…" Subaru breathes the words, breathing far too hot on his beloved's plush lips. Finally, he lifted and released his hold over Kamui's legs, bringing them to lay on his shoulders.
The younger male found himself, flexibility has further proven, as he feels his lover entering deeper than ever, hitting his pleasures spot dead on and so hard. The leisurely pace left him crying out for more.
"Kamui…" Subaru grasps Kamui's left hand, entangled with his own. Seriously, the shades of emerald and gold took on a deeper forest and amber hues. "Please…" He cried the words so vulnerable, slowing their bodies' motion further. "Don't ever leave."
The words, hushed so softly, and terrified… struck like a blade to Kamui's heart. ' Uncertain if referring to the relationship ending or Kamui physically leaving him behind… all of which were impossibilities. A future he would never let happen.
"I'd never dream of it," Kamui vows, voice determined, firm and without, wanting to chase away the seeds of doubt in his lover's mind. "Subaru, you must know how I feel?" He responded weakly, leaning up to kiss his beloved, their bodies only connecting tighter. "I'm not going anywhere… I won't let you be alone anymore."
The words of such an oath struck every chord played on Subaru's heart. The beating is now a melody played so easily by a few words… insecurities slip away, and a tender love-bound smile takes over all else.
"Kamui…." Subaru says, the last word spoken between them. "Thank you…" His kisses soften, but by no means lessen in their depth and loving motions.
"I'll always need you," Every cry, mewl, and moan greedily swallowed up by Subaru's lips. Kamui squeezed his lover's hand, an assurance everything would work out, be alright, finally.
"Ah—need you too," Kamui murmurs, between tiny breaks between deepening, never ended kisses.
His lover returned the gesture naturally, squeezing his hand in return before his hands fell to grip Kamui's elevated hips. The latter male can cling to his lover's back, as though for dear life, accepting anything to come.
For the first time that evening, the pace began to increase, desire guiding them towards a perfect release. Subaru entered Kamui just as deep and harder, pounding against the oversensitized prostate until he could feel screams reverberating on his lips.
Kiss intact, deep, and unruly, neither could voice what was to come. At this depth, pace and intensity… it only lasted a single moment, before Kamui's fingernails dug marks in his lover's back. His silent cries fell to his lover's lips as he came nearly painfully hard between their bodies. He clenches on his lover, triggering and urging all of Subaru's love and pleasure to come forth.
Another soft cry falls through, Kamui finding his body filled with his lover's white and hot essence, finding a home inside of him. Every drop and an almost violent burst of cum, hit the younger man's private spots as though with an intention to leave some mark, a sign they'd united.
Coming himself and reeling in his own orgasm while being filled so completely overstimulates. There was no chance his mind could keep up. Everything went entirely white. While meaning to be a comfort and source for Subaru, he couldn't help it, soon falling into a slumber, body and heart content.
"I love you, Kamui…" He murmurs the words, an assurance, a promise before falling into the world of dreams.
"I love you too…and I will always be with you," Kamui assures, promises to slip right from the heart.
Subaru took in the beautiful smile, kissing sleepy lips, before lingering… to pull out and clean his perfect beloved.
The need for connection goes above and beyond. Enrapturing.
Parting
The Sumeragi memorial service lasted for the majority of the weekend, though the following days were more relaxed. Mostly, lighting candles and chanting different spells and prayers to send off the spirit world. Plenty of time to simply breathe and take breaks remained.
The gleaming lights of ki were beautifully cast off into that final evening. Bursts of shimmering trails painted the sky in every color of the rainbow, honoring and inspiration for Hokuto's eccentric and colorful tastes.
While the sight itself was gorgeous. Kamui's attention while entranced fell on his lover numerous times. The glossy, shivering gold and green eyes, made his chest tighten. Never letting go of his lover's hand for the ceremony was the least he could do. Near constantly, Kamui would give reassuring caresses or squeeze his beloved's hand, even nuzzling up to his side, finding the light display of affection being a 'surprise' to no one at this point.
Their time alone consisted entirely of cuddling up in bed or on their couch, and the same soft, slow and sensual lovemaking. As beautiful as it had been, Kamui could still see tears in his lover's eyes as he would whisper, 'I need you, I can't lose you.' with such worry, fear as though letting go of Kamui's hand for a second would make him drift away, like the petals of the Sakura in the wind.
Subaru gently hugged, leaving parting greetings to his grandmother. The motion feeling unique, the Sumeragi family (outside of Hokuto) were not usually ones for affectionate/kind goodbyes. Even when he was little, he was already seen as the soon-to-be Onmyouji leader, looked at as one before his age could even reach the double digits.
Kamui could sense a rather familiar presence watching from a distance away. The couple before, whose deep emerald eyes were unmistakably that of Subaru's. There was apprehension, despite him being their son, they gave Subaru his space, seeming uncertain to even come closer.
Kamui could see his boyfriend's family shared a trait or two. They're keeping distance and blaming themselves for actions of the past, even if they weren't the ones to cause harm.
Subaru was finishing a conversation, mostly light and personal, which was a relief. Softer topics to help bridge the relationships back together. Kamui had some ideas about the topics, he heard his name and matrimony coming up on several occasions and many left him and his boyfriend razzled, and flustered.
When his lover finished talking, Kamui thought it right to tell him about his estranged family.
"Kamui?" A tug on a long black sleeve, earner a tiny little curl on Subaru's lips, he tilted his head gently waiting for an answer.
"I know I'm… not one to talk with my own family…" Kamui begins taking a deep breath. His chest clenches, seeing how Subaru looks into his eyes, taking in every word with the highest degree of compassion and consideration. "... But Maybe you should talk with them a bit more before we head out."
A gentle and discrete wave flows in the direction of his parents.
"Oh," Subaru responds, voice clearly pained and melancholy.
"You don't have to do anything you don't want to," Kamui states, releasing any notion of the pressure away. "I just… thought I'd say something before we go back to Tokyo."
"I…" Subaru's avoidant instincts had been to offer an excuse, delay, or follow through as quickly as possible. But… his hand moves with him realizing, cradling the side of his lover's head. 'I don't think I could say no, even if I really wanted to.' "Perhaps… It may be a good change..."
Though the voice is clearly uncertain, and anxious, Kamui feels a swell of relief, heating his chest. Fondly he watches his lover walk gracefully to his parents, contrasting with the clear anxiety one could feel.
Subaru gives one last lingering look before approaching his mother and father. A pang hits his chest, looking in his mother's emerald orbs.
'In your eyes… I can always see Hokuto. ' He reflects, bittersweet to see a soft reminder of his sister. Their mother held the closest resemblance to them both, along with their powers.
"Subaru!" His mother cries out, hands moving to cup her son's cheeks. Her eyes were almost studying, checking if this was real. To see Subaru again, and openly approach them. The light, having been gone nearly a decade, returned more than anything. Their only surviving child housed true emotion, hope, and brightness in his eyes, really feeling.
Subaru's father holds a hand to his shoulder, clasping it caringly. His lips press together as though trying to process a shiver.
And the last few years… there wasn't even that much.
"I am so happy to see you," She whispers out. Sees her child only briefly during Hokuto's remembrance ritual. "I…"
"I'm… so Sorry!" Her arms wrap around Subaru's shoulders, as though he were still a child, lost, broken… and internally… there was something. making up for the lost time. Hesitated in even hugging, but when she did, it seemed as though she'd never let go. Protective, maternal instincts take over hesitations.
"You…don't need to apologize," Subaru mentions, slowly but surely returning the hug, to the best of his ability. "If anything I'm the one…." He shakes his head, all too fondly, knowing what Kamui would say at this moment. "No, I…" He doesn't finish, taking a breath.
"Seeing you like this," Subaru's father begins, tears falling out openly. "It's been too long." This went beyond just the two years missing the memorial… no far far longer.
"You seem… much lighter," Subaru's mother adds on further gently touching her son's cheek, featherlight, nurturing.
"Ah well," Subaru immediately turns back to Kamui, his hand waves in the same direction. His smile melted and was mushy over his lips. "He would be why."
Kamui had watched patiently. Subaru's mother broke down crying, father clearly close to doing the same. The soft exchange of words… and a compassionate atmosphere.
'It might be nice…', Kamui thinks, a future ahead, one where after so much loss, he can regain a family, surrounded by such warmth. He quickly shakes it off, literally shaking his head.
"Kamui?" Subaru calls out, tone falling between a coo and a murmur. His hand curves waving to his lover to come over.
Kamui swallows, taking this into account. He assumed he'd met… his lover's family now… but with a deep breath, he follows up. 'I need to be your support. ' He thinks fondly, 'As you have been mine.'
When Kamui came over, he found his hand stolen, fingers lacing with Subaru's. So open and the beaming smile, made his heart skip. "Ah…" 'How should I introduce myself…? They don't know our relationship yet…what do I even say?' Worries multiply the longer he dwells on was no reason to overthink, as his lover spoke openly, even full of pride…
"This is the person I love. Whom I'm going to spend my life with." Subaru's bold and assured declaration comes as a surprise. For the first time in his life, or at least a long time… he holds absolute faith.
'Well, that takes care of introductions.' Kamui relaxes, breaths calming. If he hadn't reddened before, by now he was doubly blushing hard. Deep dark traces of red and pink, and he has to look down because Subaru gives him this look.
A brief second of surprise widened the parent's eyes, more hearing words spoken so openly, and by their very quiet, private, and reserved son at that. When they looked from Kamui and back to Subaru's softened features… it all fell into place.
"I-It's nice to meet you." Kamui stumbles over his words, only making his beloved brighter.
"Kamui…" Subaru coos, quietly... A tender gaze, smile, and gentleness that comes before a kiss or gesture of love. This time a gentle squeeze on his hand. The younger male bows his head.
From there, things feel lighter. Words came easier as well as a sense of freedom being open and natural. Nothing but compassion, joy and renewing hope, and acceptance shined in either parent's eyes.
"It's so nice to meet you."
Time rushed on by. Their private care is ready and waiting to head back to Tokyo. Kamui and Subaru bid their goodbyes.
A clasping on his shoulder stopped him mid-stride. Subaru's mother elegantly smiles, eyes softening, and she bows her head. Her words ring and stir through Kamui's heart.
"Thank you for bringing Subaru's light back."
-Change of Plans-
The Slow ticking of the clock…quiet, and dampened feeling, all of this seemed to linger through the room. The TV across from them plays a low, sorrowful movie from some TV drama all too fitting.
'The day was meant to be perfect for you…' Subaru laments, eyes downcast, crestfallen as he recalls the call from earlier. His perfect plans to further woo and spoil Kamui shattered.
"It's okay, Subaru," Kamui ensures, smiles, handing a warm mug of coffee to his lover. He holds his cup over his lips hiding the smile beneath, his lover's pouting actions, far too endearing to go admired. "With how important your work is this was bound to happen one of these days…"
"You are very popular," He reminds, tone and eyes lingering flirtatiously, attempting to alter the mood of their situation. Usually, this would be the case. Now, though the words didn't sway the feeling away.
"I'm still… so sorry," Subaru apologizes, looking down, a pang of long guilt-ridden sigh. His lips curved into a deep sulk, as he attempts to glare daggers at the phone in hand-the one who moments ago announced a new job from a very influential client in Japan. "I had everything reserved too…"
The threat of a poltergeist potentially harming such an influential client, tied closely with the prime Minister… wasn't something to go ignored. Nor could just any Onmyouji be sent out for it.
Thus… They'd have to leave, first thing in the morning. All date plans were quickly canceled.
"It's not your fault." Kamui shakes his head cuddling closer on their couch, legs brought contently over his lover's lap. "We can always celebrate the next day. *
"Yes, but it's our first as a couple!" Subaru responds, insistent. Tender blue-violet eyes raise in surprise at the outcry, before calming, eyelashes fluttering.
"Subaru," Kamui calls so tenderly. "It's okay…You already did so much for our Valentine's Day," he reminds, tenderly clasping his beloved's hand between his own. He finds how deadly serious Subaru takes every event and milestone with his lover. "I'm happy just being with you. And as far as going out… there will be other times… maybe even later in the day." Not that he could guarantee how long this particular exorcism may take.
"But still…" Subaru lulls, eyes downcast, closing almost painfully. I'll try to finish the job as soon as possible then-"
"We are going together," Kamui insists, leaning up, so his lips cover his lover's. With a bemused smirk, he supplies. "Maybe not the most romantic White Day plans but we will be together."
Subaru peered up, gold and emerald eyes glimmering as they focused further on Kamui.
"I'll make this up to you," Subaru promises with certainty, gazing directly into amorous violet eyes. Their fingers laced together nearly.
The words were tender and meant to be assuring. The younger man couldn't help but ponder what 'making up' could potentially lead to.
"I-If you want to…" Kamui stumbles, cheeks flush and stomach heats up. He inwardly curses his hormones, the mind immediately going there but seeing such a passionate side of Subaru lately… he couldn't sway the thought from his mind. "I might… really like that."
Thoughts slip out… Kamui shakes his head, avoiding his lover's curious gaze, which only amplifies the fire in his cheeks.
Accomplished
While the timing of the task could have been better, there was a positive side to all of this. At least there was, in the mind of the soon-to-be Onmyouji.
Hands laced together, index fingers press tightly, as enchanting violet orbs keep closed, concentrated. "Om…Bazara, Datuma, Kiri, Souka" Kamui chants slowly at first, anxious to ensure he pronounces every word and breaks up all syllables perfectly.
'Please, be at peace from here…' The hope so strong, infused by immeasurable power, creates a heavenly ray of light, casting over the apparition. Soothing light cascades across the night sky.
The figure of a ghostly woman begins to fade, her soul once tied to their client's mansion. A long held-feeling tying her to the client's, more so his ancestor's home. She'd been deceived and betrayed long ago. The details, for better or worse, obscured over the years…decades…. Just how long had this restless spirit resided? To get to the point where only the anger, and resentment remained and the real meaning behind them slowly faded with the passage of time.
Perhaps, it was because her appearance, long dark hair, and expressive eyes reminded Kamui of his mother. Perhaps, the circumstances of one being lost for so long, made him feel this way. But today he found himself caught up in the pains of sympathy.
The need to free, and exorcise the long-lost spirit came about strongly. The pure ki simply surrounding Kamui's form was enough to finish the task. The aura around him kept growing stronger, frames of golden light encase his figure. Emotions about the present and past familial connections made the light surrounding Kamui almost blindly.
Biting hard on his lip, and with a shudder seeing so much power piling up, Subaru approaches his 'pupil' carefully.
"Rin. Pyo. Tou. Sha. Kai. Chin…" Kamui pauses, power wavering, too unruly to process. He feels a gentle tug on his hand, warm breath upon his neck.
"It's alright Kamui," Subaru assures, affectionately, squeezing Kamui's hand tightly. "Take a breath from here…keep yourself calm, and start again. You can do this."
The encouraging words seep deep into Kamui's heart and mind, powers calming to a manageable rate. Kamui reminds himself. 'Right, start again…calmly.'
He nods, feeling his lover and mentor's belief in him stirring him on. Lighting a fire within while simultaneously, keeping the storm of emotions in check.
"Rin. Pyo. Tou. Sha. Kai. Chin. Retsu. Zai. Zen!" The words fall perfectly, emotion, tone, and intention clear to set the spirit job finishes. With a ray of light casting off to the night sky, an indication of a tempered yet anguished spirit finally going free.
Barely a second after their job's completion, Kamui lunges forward. His arms, not realizing his strength nearly toppling his lover over, before he steadies them both against the front wall of their client's home.
"Thank you, Subaru!" Kamui breathes the words, softening into his lover's neck. Nuzzling his cheek to his boyfriend's neck he feels a shiver. "You always know…how to reach me…"
"Ah…" Subaru clears his throat, gently, patting the top of his lover's head. The purring sensation of warm breath on his neck did not help the situation. He takes a step from the wall, slightly distancing their bodies, keeping himself in check from losing himself to Kamui, with so little privacy. "You already possess the ability to manage your power. I merely offered a reminder.."
"Mmm," Kamui fondly, hums, before he finds himself. A realization clicks in, just how quickly their mentor/student relationship turned back to lovers if it ever really changed that much. His cheeks flush, and quickly he follows Subaru to a more private location, which wasn't a problem this late at night.
Curiosity springs in, the young man, grasping for his lover's wrist.' 11:50 pm'- were the numbers gleaming from Subaru's watch.
Well, they still had… ten minutes until the day officially ended. Their first 'White Day' celebration as a couple.
"You know…There are still some cafes or restaurants open for late nights," Kamui offers, rather purring as he does so. His hand waves vaguely in the direction of the lit-up shops around them.
Subaru raises an eyebrow, curious about his lover's enthusiastic interest.
"We still have time left for our date today," Kamui further elaborates, a playful curving of lips, making his lover's eyes follow.
"That's right," Subaru realizes they did, in fact, still have time left. His heart is stirring to see his lover committed to celebrating this day-well evening, seeming so jovial and excited even after such a long workday. On a technicality, their first couple's 'White Day' wasn't entirely over with. "We should celebrate."
"Happy White Day, Kamui," Subaru whispers, feeling unprepared, no usual flowers, gifts, or even a card to follow up with. His contented lover pays this no mind, and dashes back into Subaru's arms. Kamui leans up to his tiptoes, offering a quick peck on his lover's lips.
"Let's find a place," Kamui reminds, hoping to at least find their destination before the next day begins. Subaru shook his head, quite fondly, as he walked with Kamui down the small shopping district.
While plans had changed for the holiday, they were able to be together. The workday only brings them that bit closer and makes the well-earned celebration worth it.
They enter a quaint, mostly empty, 24-hour diner. Immediately, they find their seat, and Kamui starts their order with a grandiose Sundae, drizzled with white chocolate.
Seeing those beautiful violet-blue eyes sparkle, that sweet little smile leaves him breathless.
"I'm glad I could be with you today," Kamui's voice sounds nothing short of ethereal to his lover's ears.
Kamui's smaller hand reaches across the table to his own. Subaru is sure, that today would make for another cherished memory.
Lovelorn
Though feeling petty… and guilty, Subaru can't fight the unsavory feelings coming when thinking of another loving Kamui so deeply… He keeps recalling the last visit they made to a mysterious woman having worked alongside a few of the Magami clients.
They visited a mysterious older woman, gifted with divination abilities, in her home, a cottage far away, cloaked in a sheltering forest.
At the least, Kamui was able to voice his curiosities, and confirm things here and now.
"The duties of a Magami… being a shadow sacrifice… are they truly inescapable?" Kamui can't help but the question was it an inevitability.
"It's said to be …the Magami family, possessed more than enough power to change the course of other's fate," She continues, reciting the words, gently, feeling the tension as the topic persists. "But most would never dare to go against their fate… which is why in the least… they chose the one they'd protect."
But being free of that duty… Is that why his mother had to sacrifice herself for the world? Because she ran from her cruel fate, never devoting herself to a client, always on the run to keep Kamui safe until that promised year.
"At the least, I've heard my f- the Magami line were able to choose the one they'd work for."
She nods and continues furthering on. "To be a shadow sacrifice required much more than having the will to live and die for one person…your entire heart. A love…in one way or another…would always be present."
"A love, where one lives according to their heart's wishes…The same could be said for anyone sacrificing themselves for a Magami."
"Has that been possible? For someone outside of the Magami to take on… their sacrifice."
She looks at the young man, seriously, careful of her chosen words. "That person would have to love beyond all reason. To live with their heart and soul. If they lived in a way traitorous to their heart's desire… the strength to protect, and take on the duties of a Shadow Sacrifice could be… delayed… but not truly stopped."
"A love would have to go beyond all measures… giving up all means and paying the cost no matter how painful… then they could be saved."
"So…" Kamui feels the stitches of pieces of his heart, being torn at. Your wish… all that time… never once changes. His twin star, best friend, and belated love… held to the desire to set him free. A part of him understood though he'd grasped it… plenty of times. "That's how it was…"
Returning to the present, recalling the lost, vulnerable expressions… those emotions of the past stirring up. He knows he's in no place to talk but the feeling won't fade. An insecure notion flows through Subaru, making his eyebrow raise and twist, as he tries to suppress it enough.
It's to no avail. All of this makes him want to take Kamui away somewhere, pin him down, Leaving fresh love marks everywhere, impossible to miss. A desire flows to make love to Kamui until he's overflowing with his erotic essences. And Knowing his Kamui… he likely would be a little into that.
That very proof of Kamui was taken beyond any doubt. (Not taking into account just how enamored Kamui always was at his side. The raw emotion in violet eyes, tender touches, Kamui's voice going softer and sweeter were clear signs, that his heart had been taken for some time… even most onlookers could see it)
In an ideal world…. Maybe he could have met Kamui earlier. His mind conjures up a 'perfect' romance scenario. The age gap is gone or lessened, with Kamui being born earlier or himself being born later on… maybe they could go to the same school, become instantly close, and avoid falling in love with traumatizing men. They'd go out on dates like any other couple, and fall in love in a peaceful way, become boyfriends… attend college, get married…? There were far too many 'If only…'
But….that was an impossibility. The past was unchangeable, lingering there for so long would only deprive him of the present. The very gift of Kamui being in his life. The person he's madly in love with loves him back. Kamui has never taken the life of someone precious to him and was approved of by his family. His beloved even wants to work beside him in this insane line of work (truly improving Subaru's lifespan). Never in his life had he thought about seemingly frivolous concepts of 'marrying for love. Now he couldn't imagine a future where he wasn't bound to Kamui in every way possible…
For the present, he wouldn't dare ask for more. Even if the road was treacherous, he still reached this peaceful destination. What else could he possibly need? So long as Kamui, even the darkest of days held that faint ray of light.
Life was nothing…. Like what it had been.
If anyone were to tell him his life could brighten, that he would fall for someone so very deeply and enjoy life again… he'd think they were fools, an impossibility.
But Kamui did that, making the impossible possible.
Kamui loved him and didn't cause him pain, never purposely…nothing like what he'd felt before.
Though Subaru knows himself well… enduring any pain Kamui could bring him… and honestly, it's hard to even imagine.
He did everything possible to convince himself, his heart, to fall out of love with Seishirou. Nearly a decade his heart was just as damaged as it had been as a sixteen-year-old betrayed so terribly.
In less than a year…with the presence of one incredible young man, the shattered pieces began to be restored. This time in life, Subaru could count himself beyond blessed, and finally, experience what it means to live and not simply survive.
Growth
Sitting on the outskirts of an abandoned temple, the young onmyouji in training, sat cross-legged. Soft eyelids closed and relaxed.
In front of Kamui were five candles, meaning to represent a key element in Onmyou… or at least, according to the textbook he borrowed on their last visit to the Sumeragi estate.
Though why all five elements were represented when he'd only be working with fire magic… was uncertain. And technically water would be needed to put out the candles post-training. But… These elements were a big focus in a lot of the Onmyou arts and Kamui wanted to get it down, to prove himself a worthy partner to the Sumeragi leader.
A soft ringing fills the silence Kamui realizes he's forgotten to turn the sound off his phone. Curious, and certain of who the sender could be, he takes a meditative break (having only been five minutes in).
The message on his phone read out. 'Might be back late, jobs are taking longer than expected.' Leaving Kamui on his own to train a bit longer.
'Please, be safe.' Kamui responded, lips pursed, hoping his often selfless lover would care for his safety.
'I'll come back to you as soon as I can.' That line made Kamui's heart flutter, chest warming up. Not simply, 'I'll be home' or 'I'll come back soon, which we're reassuring on their own. No, this was to ensure Subaru would come back to him personally and, as soon as possible.
"You had better," Kamui says with a gentle laugh, into the silence. 'Now I need to concentrate, just like I learned back in Kyoto.'- he reflects, seeking as much determination as he could muster.
Nimble hands reach out to sort out the candles, keeping them all an equal distance apart.
'Now I merely need to close my eyes, focus…. '
He imagines his lover's words being spoken before him. His mind projects the image of his mentor sitting cross-legged across from him, patiently guiding him along.
'You only need to tap into that power within yourself… just start with a small amount, like you have when working with the ofuda spells.'
Kamui nods, recalling those rare free evenings, afternoons where they trained.
'I think I've got it…' Kamui breathed in, eyes closed. His mind conjures that internal image, of a door, bursting to come open, powerful golden light seen within the cracks.
'Gently and you'll- "
Opening that door, Kamui starts summoning what he assumes to be an a' bit' of power. The fire can be felt clearly between them…and not a pleasant one of passion.
"Please Stop," Subaru requests, voice tender and far more patient than any instructor Kamui can recall.
Still, the creepy anxiety and worry slip through his tone. He doesn't need to open his eyes to sense how wild the flame grew upon the very tiny wick.
Kamui still did open his eyes with worry.
With a quick swish, no more strength than one swatting away a fly, Subaru stopped the flames. a Small mystical orb surrounded the flame quelling it and swallowing it up until no traces are left.
"That's a bit much," Subaru gently reminds his pupil.
Kamui flushes, looking to the ground, partly wanting to hide away, "Sorry."
During actual Onmyouji jobs, surely this much power would be fine. Managing to control and focus the precise amount of power was proving more difficult.
"Let's try again, bring out even less power than you think you'll need." Subaru gently reminds him. Habits are hard to break, as he reaches to tenderly caress his lover's cheek.
"Okay," Kamui warily responds, looking anxiously at the surrounding candles burned on the edges from the fire of a single one, out of control.
"I know you can do this, Kamui." Subaru ensures his trainee, reaching across for the younger male's hand. Immediately, his hand calms, reaching a perfect stillness. Kamui takes a deep breath, determined to prove himself.
"Right!"
It had been a long road. Kamui now focuses more precisely, on the mental image, the source of his power more defined. Instead of a vague burst of light, he's able to see his ki in smaller particles.
Opening that metaphorical door, tapping into his energy, he reaches. Now accustomed, the energy brought out remains in his control a small spark of gold light plays at his fingertip.
Calmly, Kamui relies on the sense of touch, closed, relaxed, not wincing as in the past. The tiny spark forms an orb no bigger than a marble. The controlled energy streams from the tip of Kamui's finger to the wick of the candle.
A precise, manageable flame begins to spark. Again the same motion repeats, energy-focused moving a little slower, working towards lighting a flame of an identical size… then another… again, and finally the fifth.
'I can do this…' Kamui psyches himself up, breathing a soft lingering exhale. 'Subaru believes in me… I can't let the training go to waste.'
The final candle, lights aflame, the wick brushing against the source of energy. The flare starts smaller than the others, frustrating the caster. But he doesn't give up, focusing on the feeling, the energy, and light, needing to match with the rest in perfect sync. While not on a first try, he gradually grows the flame, now perfectly aligned with the others.
'And now I only need to put them out…'
Tapping into his ki, Kamui reaches for a different form of energy. A cooling mist formed through his hand, dousing a single flame from each candle, one after the other, from left to right.
A curl rises to Kamui's lips, he peeks out to the candles, in pristine condition as when he started. Not a sight of a flame remains, even the smallest bout power being fully controlled.
"You've improved," Subaru's voice calls from a distance. Fondly, he follows up, gold and emerald orbs glistening at the sight of his favorite person.
"Subaru!" Kamui calls, dousing the flames, before turning back, and seeing his tired lover walk towards him. The younger man stands up, closing their distance. He wraps his arms around his lover, glancing out to the sky, seeing the sparkling night sky… evident he'd been at this practice for longer than expected.
"I'm sorry it took so lo-mnn-" Subaru attempts to finish, but his lips are stolen into a tender, indulgent kiss. Dual-toned eyes flutter closed, arms surrounding the slender waist earning a purr.
Dazzling violet-blue peer into emerald-green. "You came back," Kamui ensures with a gentle smile kissing the corner of his love's mouth. His eyes glance around, inspecting his lover's body for injury, only mild scratches remaining. "And you're not hurting, right?
"Right," Subaru confirms, petting the top of Kamui's head. Fingers tangled in the silky locks, the younger man leans into the touch. "And I made it in time to see your progress first hand. It might be a little late to rain now though…" He ducks his head apologetic.
Kamui shakes his head, stealing a few brief kisses. "You being back with me is what matters. There will be other chances to train… and you saw… .so I have improved right?*
"You have," Subaru assures, carding fingers through Kamui's head, kissing all across his forehead. "You've become quite natural at this." He praises, melting at the beaming grin Kamui gives off.
'Though sometimes… I wish that weren't the case.'
April 1st
Coming from hectic work assignments to resuming student life in such elaborate but peaceful classrooms was different. It proved to Kamu there would be a change come graduation.
Most of my school-age friends and classmates were heading to or planning to attend CLAMP University. There had always been the chance, an opportunity granted to do the same. But for Kamui living a 'normal life' at this point seemed impossible and at the least unfitting.
To have such power and finally… beside the person he loves most… there was nothing he'd find more fulfilling.
Still… I might miss this more than I realized I would.
Not so much the group projects, exams, and time-consuming homework assignments… but simply being on campus, seeing familiar classmates and passionate, often charismatic teachers…it was nice.
Celebrations came along for just about every reason. Many events created irreplaceable memories, cherished within the depths of his heart's vault. Today there's an unofficial one, with many of the students and staff alike celebrating their birthday.
A sense of Deja Vu comes this year, Kamui attends CLAMP school, the start of a new month. Similar bustling chats and exclaims of 'Happy Birthday' are heard from several rooms across campus.
Normally, Kamui would see the day as being entirely positive. At least until he heard a tidbit of details of his lover's ex…. Which brought out a sour feeling in his stomach.
"There sure are a lot of birthdays today," Kamui voiced, casually, looking up at their wall calendar.
Sensing his tired love behind him, Kamui smiles. He holds a hand up to stop- the sound of the coffee machine churning.
Taking one of their S+K cups out, he delivered the drinks.
Continuing what he thought would be an upbeat conversation. "CLAMP school goes above and beyond with celebrations. It's like every classroom has someone born April 1st, ya know?"
There was a half-second when Kamui caught a glimpse of a broken expression. This brief stir of, reflected in the rich coffee. He seemed to hide it, looking down at his cup and shaking it off by the time his eyes met Kamui.
"What's wrong?" Kamui asks, feeling warm at the way his lover's eyes widen. Subaru's glimmering eyes still shine in awe, when his lover reads him so well. Never missing a beat.
"It was just a thought. Not really much-"
"I still want to know!"
"... Ok." Subaru reaches up, patting the crown of Kamui's head. His hand slips down cupping a tender, heating cheek.
"Just when I was younger… I went to a fortune teller with…" Subaru begins, eyes darkening, near trembling as he thinks of a past that seems so hopeful yet… full of lies.
"With the former Sakurazukamori?" Kamui supplies, using the title instead of the name, Subaru seemed a little less hurt that way… keeping the past distant.
"That's right," Subaru breaks out, free hand anxiously clasping the side of his coffee cup. "I… was more dragged into it… but we went for compatibility test-"
Subaru broke off with a light laugh. The near-automatic pout scrunched eyebrows, nose, and beautiful violet-blue shadowing over.
Of course, his reaction made Kamui sulk more.
"Come here," Subaru says, extra sweetly, gesturing for Kamui to come close.
"Ah-" Kamui gasps, feeling the sudden grasp on his hips and being placed neatly on Subaru's lap.
Subaru pecks his lips, and his lips curl fondly. "Any-way… we had to give a birth date for the test, going off astrological signs and all… so I simply gave my own, far too trusting."
"Subaru.." Kamui whispers, leaning their foreheads together. "You have a very kind heart, it's not on you if others choose to take advantage of that…"
"I… suppose…" Subaru replies unconvinced, still slightly after earning a barrage of kisses across his face.
"So…I'm guessing he didn't have that same honesty?" Kamui solves the issue, putting the pieces together easily.
Subaru holds that enchanted gaze, his lover's intuitive nature, and genuine compassion strike him.
"Right… and the day he chose was April 1st…though I learned soon after that was another lie…"
Lies upon lies.
Kamui's eyes firmed, steely as he glared at the table…image of the Sakurazukamori surfaced from his mind. A near growl escaped soft lips, his facial features scrunched up tightly.
Subaru grasped for Kamui's hand, a bittersweet smile turning to one of amusement as his lover's expression shifted between the darker feeling of hatred and lightning back to one more envious…
Kamui is made to realize more history his lover shared with his twisted ex. Though looking towards his lover, caught in a web of emotions bittersweet and torn… he breaks himself out of this.
Kamii cups his lover's left cheek, leaning in as he promises, "I will never let you feel that hurt again… I won't lie to you, and work harder even on little things too so-"
His rambling becomes cut off with a sweet kiss word understood.
Now, at the moment, Kamui comes back down to the present. He takes an exam sheet, and despite the high marks, his face remains a scowl.
'Yet, another reason I hate him… ' Kamui's bitter thoughts form. He didn't want to make a habit of hating others and those he hadn't known personally… but the one who betrayed Subaru so badly… he can't find another feeling to resurface.
'It's in the past…' Kamui reminds himself mentally, several times before he can brighten. "Things are different now…" He whispers to himself taking in the lighthearted mood of CLAMP school.
-Okinawa-
"You are sure… you want to come along?" Subaru asked, despite predicting the frustration it would bring. As much as he wanted to feel bad, his overprotective habits seeping out, his lovesick brain could only focus on how cute Kamui looked sulky. Even with that slight glare cooling, his hand would reach out to caress. To kiss those sullen lips, deep and intense, until they could do nothing but melt the way his sense of rationality had for such moments.
Oh, he was helpless, far far beyond any hope of recovering from this.
"Subaru!" Kamui whines, arms crossing under his chest. A sound between a growl and groan kept resurfacing under his breath.
All the too far gone man can do is smile a little softer, apologetic. God…. The way Kamui's cheeks reddened, clearly putting effort in to stay upset was too precious.
"Of course, I'm sure!" Kamui retorts, hands on his hips and frowning. Irritation spread from the curve of his eyebrows to his pouting mouth. But he knew he was just as helpless. A touch, a few short words, and a tender look were all it took to undo that feeling. Unfairly, he knew he'd melt into, so he had to express himself now avoiding the intensely loving gaze.
"I would go with you everywhere if I could! So at least I…" Kamui finds his traitorous eyes craving to gaze back at Subaru. "I want to work with you when I have the time off."
``We'll be partners, full time once I graduate… at least I hope I will… so…' Kamui reflects on his frustrations.
Thankfully, as overprotective as his boyfriend could be, he had a weakness… when it came to trying to deny his lover anything.
Kamui looked up so hopefully, with his sparkling doe-eyes. Subaru felt the critical attack on his heart.
"Just..stay close to me then," Subaru returns, voice softening, pained. His younger lover feels a sharp pain in his chest, hearing the worry and sorrow. "I… know you grew up there and…with your.. ."
'Oh…'
Those final memories with his mother. Before his heart, mind, and body became overcome with anguish and trauma for those final moments….
Burning….
Kamui had mentioned those years of his life…. Among everything else to Subaru. So of course, his lover would be extra concerned.
"I'll be alright Subaru," Kamui returns, tenderly as his hand reaches out to caress a worried face. "It's been a few years now…" The pain would always be there but… he wasn't the same person as when he first left Tokyo. "I will be alright, I won't push myself too far, and.. I'll have you with me…" And maybe if there's time… we could go to her resting place.
Subaru places a hand over the one on his cheek. "Kamui," he soothes, the tenderness in his voice, making the small male shiver. "So long as you'll be alright."
"I'll be with you," Kamui returns so sweetly, eyes glossy and heart-sinking further to this feeling. "So I will be fine." words never through his lips seeming this sure…
The depth of the admission and faith must have broken through to Subaru, who took Kamui's lips captive, an arm slinking around and pulling his lover right against him.
-Trip -
The flight to Okinawa went smoothly enough. It seems like a normal workday. As normal as their profession can be.
There were several potential plans: to visit his mother's graves, see the oceans he went to as a child, and maybe explore the town… all of this would be if they had the time.
Kamui's lips stretched for a long lion-like yawn. His older lover fondly pets his head.
As with everywhere, they go, the beautiful pair attracted quite a lot of attention. Which was fine… at least until a young staff member got too friendly, for simply checking a ticket.
An obnoxious, too high-pitched laugh to be natural, over complimentary… and Kamui was seconds from leaving the check-in and at least half of the airport in ruin as her hand brushed playfully at Subaru's arm, then over his left hand. Violet-blue orbs are even beginning to shift from their usual violet-blue to a more ominous gold.
Subaru quickly removed his hand, irritation clear through his normally calming features. "Thank you but I am quite taken," He politely but very directly confirms.
"Oh? The woman's eyes become a bit more steely as she attempts to laugh it off… as though it were a joke,… embarrassed? Or simply having no boundaries… regardless she realizes the blunder… feeling near-fatal daggers coming from piercing violet-blue eyes.
"Oh, s-sorry for that. We'll have a nice day," She all too quickly plasters a smile at Subaru, while falling to a frown, to Kamui as she checks his ticket.
This led the young man to quite haughtily beaming. Ensuring he caught her attention he runs up the short distance to grasp Subaru's arm holding to it and leaning in, a manner far too close for mere friends.
"Subaru~" Kamui coos, a tone sickeningly sweet. He nuzzles the side of Subaru's arm, making him flustered at the quick display of affection, though he leans into it easily enough. The young man turns his head, smirking victoriously at the quite envious young woman.
"I thought we might have to change airports," Subaru teases once they remain out of earshot. His tone is all too adoring, even as he adds. "I wasn't quite sure the airline would stay in one piece. "
"Yeah. Well... For people like that… it can't be helped," Kamui grumbles, weakly defending himself. "Maybe you should start… wearing it like a ring or something…" he reddens, mumbling to himself. Even at the stage, they were in… as boyfriends… lovers….
'It might be nice to have… some kind of proof. ' Whether matching rings or another kind of symbol…, tying them together.
"What was that?" Subaru asks softly, kissing the top of his lover's head.
"Nothing…" Kamui shakes it off, taking his lover's hand, grasping it unnecessarily tightly to the point where even his patient beloved winces hard. "S-sorry… I just… didn't like that…"
"I noticed," Subaru's lips curl, wryly. "You don't need to worry, I did mention I'm very taken…and I'll gladly say the same to any other who assumes differently."
"Well, yeah… I was really happy you said that…" Kamui admits, a little sheepish turning his gaze to the side. "It's still embarrassing being so direct like that… But it is still way better than what you did…"
"Sounds like there are conflicting feelings," Subaru responds with a chuckle. He can't help but comment, "You were quite direct yourself. *
Kamui averts his gaze, cooling the flush on his cheeks before turning right back… because the lighter side of Subaru, playful and flirtatious affectionate… 'You're way too cute like this. '
His mind tells him he shouldn't find it cute while being the subject of teasing… but he was in too deep.
The flight remained a nice solace before the day ahead of them. Thankfully, no incidents occurred like before… no one dares to speak a second too long… not with Kamui's icy eyes on them.
'Well that went smoothly,' Kamui mentions exiting the plane.
Subaru jokes 'They probably don't want a plane crash.'
Kamui attempts to sulk but ends up laughing along after a few seconds of weakly 'glaring'. The warm atmosphere feels right.
The scenery of Okinawa is beautiful. Memories stirring up, both happy and… incredibly anguishing. The bitter mixed with sweet tugs tight on the heartstrings, Kamui becoming even more snuggly than before.
Unpacking, at the hotel seeing the beautiful beach view from their window… Kamui feels all too familiar butterflies, potential memories made by the romantic scenery come to mind.
But first…
Riiiing. Riiiing.
"Our client," Subaru supplies quickly answering the phone, eyes narrowed, annoyed despite the polite greeting.
"All right, we will head out now," Subaru informs, finishing the call.
Kamui looks over expectantly.
"We're heading out near an old shrine…about ten minutes from here. Something is causing a lot of trouble… for a large part of the area."
"Oh…it seems like it'll be a tedious job…" He notes, a little downcast, though feeling bad for letting his fantasies take over. This was their career and he understood…. There would always be time to be alone together.
-Sakura -
They finally arrive, near the abandoned shrine. The presence of nearly countless restless auras surrounds them from the moment they step foot on the grounds.
"Stay close to me," Subaru advised, clutching Kamui's hand, instinctively walking a bit ahead of his love.
'I hadn't expected there would be this many of them… ' Subaru reflects, gritting his teeth as he prepares for a rather tedious exorcism.
"There's… a lot…" Kamui vocalizes his thoughts, looking toward every lost soul despite his vision not being fully developed. He remained a bit calmer… there was something… familiar in the area.
Sensing the… abnormally large amount of ki worries set in. Not unjustified in the least. Subaru begins to pull out ofuda, he tosses one to Kamui and begins infusing power into the slip. The Signaling for his lover to take one doing the same. Energy seeps in, casting a protective spell… enough to at least lighten the impact of this much energy.
' It's almost suffocating…' Subaru finds a little relieved Kamui's senses were in progress… not having to be overwhelmed by the raging emotions of those beyond the grave. Outside of Tokyo… where so much of the destruction occurred… for this many souls to gather… anguished and angered… What could be causing it?
The answer was realized a bit late, not that they were given a chance. As a vast beam of energy strikes out… casting fire to the brush beneath, quickly Kamui sends a drop of energy dousing the flames.
The wild onslaught of attacks shows there will be little chance for conversation. Subaru and Kamui take on a more offensive stance, hands folding and forming various signs to quell off the rampant strikes.
Kamui's energy even suppressed quite easily, takes out a barrage of spirits, with a single casting of light. Though more swarm in… energy and power levels are different…yet somehow seem so connected.
Voices begin to stir, ominous both Kamui and Subaru hearing them crystal clear. One by one sounding off.
'So he still doesn't know?'
'It's only to be expected… that foolish 'girl' ran away with him before he could understand a thing.'
'What about honoring one's destiny?'
'No regard for any of it. She corrupted that' boy' as well…'
'To think she'd been hiding him here for so long… knowing where his fate lies…'
The voices mixed in, so many… it became more and more maddening. And the feeling of dread… a familiarity despite the unknown took place.
'There's nothing fair about this… We accepted our fate, losing their lives as a sacrifice, an honorable life… and yet there those running away…'
'Just as his mother did…. '
' With such power still so young… you have the chance to serve your purpose.'
All these voices are haunting. The voices, masculine, feminine, low and high, young and old… all conversing, many talking over each other to the point of deafening madness. There was such anger… and the earlier attacks, rays, and beams of ki started striking everywhere.
'As a Magami… she should have known there would be no escape as a sacrifice. "
Those words struck a cord to the pair…
"Magami…" Kamui speaks the name as a sort of curse… which perhaps most had adhered to.
He spent countless hours training for this. His breathing composed, mind still, body at ease… Kamui shakes off the words…finding there would be little talking or learning from such violent forces.
But… one foolish soul damns themself beyond all hope.
'Only trying to escape fate… create change in the world…a foolish errand. It only seems fitting Tohru would die, burning for the sake of the world…'
"Mother…" Everything went red. Kamui's violet-blue orbs began burning, heating to a tempered shade of reddish gold. The feeling now is so different. The younger savior remains conscious, while enraged by all in his control. So he proudly amplifies the growing aura around his form… a large sphere of energy strikes the one who spoke such words about his mother.
Subaru felt his heart nearly stop, he rushed to Kamui's side, grasping for his lover's hand, not wanting this power shift to continue any further."K…amui…"
"Subaru," Kamui manages to reply, mind and body in dull control. Perhaps all of it is more frightening… "I won't lose myself here… I promise I'll finish this job, so just stay back a bit?"
The promise, a twisted mix of unhinged anger and pleasure… left Subaru frozen. Perhaps, this was the rumored 'dark' persona of Kamui towards the other seals, before accepting his fate.
"But… Kamui!" Subaru shouted voice drowned out by the rushing waves of energy. Sensing some distress.
Despite the overflowing power willing him to rise to the skies…Kamui deemed it best to remain himself back on solid ground, feeling his lover's nerves.
Shaking off a vast amount of power emanating from him, he rushes back to his weary lover. Those days where Subaru believed he lost him, the terror, anguish, and despair his lover felt…he could never allow his rage to cause such a scene again.
"Subaru, trust me," Kamui breaks out again, heart feeling his lover's fear and seeking to assure, even at such a point. His rage is far from fully gone… but he can-no- he needs to, do this much, sparing his lover such pain and worry.
"Let me handle things," Kamui assures protectively. He quickly lifts and deposits his lover out of the way before returning to his battleground. "Trust me."
Subaru falls to his knees, watching the scene… feeling his legs giving out and heart… torn… unsure even how to feel, having hoped this power, even if stabilized, would remain dormant
"I do trust you…" he says despite himself, he can't believe in his precious Kamui. Faith holds out there won't be a repeat, and that things will be just as his lover states.
'Thank you. 'Kamui manages a small smile turning back, eyes slowly turning closer to their natural color. Subaru finds his heart beating soundly again.
"Now where were we?" The true 'Kamui' vindictively taunts the darkened spirits, connecting them as 'family' holding no water to stop him. They may as well be strangers. Souls with such twisted logic- finding it just his mother had to die brutally?
"Unforgivable…" he growls, snapping his attention. "But I can't…lose control here…" His tone and personality turned a complete 180 looking from his assailants and back to his lover, his inspiration. Something like that of a wolf baring its fangs at all opposing, but at the sight of its owner, turning to a doting puppy.
Though this time there was far more control, and precision, making it terrifying for all aside from Kamui and his beloved.
The scenery went a bright white, an almost heavenly dome of light surrounding the area, capturing and exercising the tarnished souls within seconds. And the end of it… Kamui comes walking out, a prideful smile, nothing but a scratch on his cheek… after all that. Subaru rushes out, embracing Kamui's impossible close.
Kamui frowns, feeling his lover's apprehension. "Sorry… I… didn't think I'd become affected." He awkwardly laughs, "I guess we won't find out more about the Magami clan this way…"
Subaru breathed a relieving sigh, honestly and relief flowed through his lips. He tucks Kamui into him, resting his chin on top of his lover's head. "All that matters is you're okay."
At the end of it all… as tired as Kamui was… he kept conscious, speaking with and assuring Subaru things would be alright.
"... Controlling that much power… you are incredible." Subaru's voice, like his heart, calms to a normal rate. 'Just please, always, keep that control.'
Kamui converses. Quite confident and feeling satisfied with his work, keep his control even in his true Kamui state, emerging, "Since we're… heading out maybe after some rest we could go to the beach and-"
Subaru instinctively rushes his arm out to the side, in front of his lover. "We're not done yet…"
Could they not catch a break? Kamui's icy glare toward the surviving spirits seemed enough to burn the remains of the shrine out of existence.
Subaru closes his eyes, cautious to read into, and not overestimate their aggressors. The eerily quiet atmosphere began to shift. A few stray spirits… nothing to fear… they could easily handle but-
As several apparitions cowardly try to strike Kamui from behind… Subaru instantly returns to the offensive, not a moment of hesitation nor patience to hold mercy beyond completely expelling the vicious soul.
Kamui is strong. Kamui is powerful. Kamui is incredible and indescribable. So why? Why does this irrational feeling take over, the burning desire to protect, keep his lover from the slightest harm?
'To think… others were so weak going out quickly…"
'His mother fulfilled her duty… isn't it fair the boy too shall do the same? To die for
Not another syllable slips from the spirit or any around it. Completely vanishing in but a heartbeat.,
The words create a catalyst, building up to something deeper and darker inside than Subaru imagined.
"You will not ever take my precious Kamui from me!" Subaru a voice unlike himself, enraged yet eerily calm, cold, and startling.
His fears come to the surface before he can realize his actions. The surrounding area becomes encased by a soft pink hue. The mirage of a fatally beautiful garden approached a tall, lush tree, in full bloom, cherry blossoms falling like drops of rain, endlessly.
"Never." Subaru breathes the words cooly. His tone is not quite sinister, yet dangerous all the same. My heart remains completely consumed by one true wish, to keep Kamui safe and happy.
The influx of scattering petals became far too overwhelming. The Sakura blossoms twist and rush around every remaining spirit, closing in…. Dissipating the souls from their human shape to dust… wisps of energy feeding into the tree before the illusion slows.
All the while Subaru feels arms strongly tugging around his- lover's waist from behind.
"Subaru?... Please?" Kamui pleadingly asks hands tangled tightly to the labels of his lover's coat. "Come back… " Tears begin staining the back of his coat, trailing down his neck… the drops of emotions and the words… tear at him.
"Kamui…" He trembles reality crashing in… "I'm sorry to think I'd use such a pow-"
His younger lover allows not a millisecond more. Quickly spinning his lover around, Kamui reaches at the back of his lover's neck, almost violently kissing him, before turning to face him, terrified, tearing up.
"I don't give a damn about that! I care about you…." Kamui cries out, near-hysterical as a rainstorm floods his expression. "I kept calling and… y-... You… wouldn't respond to me… and I was so scared… "
"I…" Subaru loses his words, his heart sinking further. To be the cause of such a heartbreaking look.
Everything went … white… trails of pink scattered away, as a concerned Kamui hugged his lover as though to never let go.
"I'm…. So sorry…Kamui… " Subaru laments, pulling his beloved close… mind running a million miles an hour…
His fear became reality… relying on such a power… losing control at the mere words implying his lover's demise… That was a future he would never allow to come to pass… no matter what. And so… that led him here.
End
So many endnotes here: Oh no Subaru! I had an event like this planned for a while now but I found it may add a more climatic-ish ending to a later chapter. Things will be tough, mental anguish taking far longer to heal than physical… but don't give up hope. Surrounded by genuine love and compassion, has a strength of its own.
This ending moment is seen very differently from Subaru and Kamui's pov. Subaru is not doing wrong… not sacrificing the life of innocents… and is still fulfilling the mission m, Albeit sending spirits off in a harsher exorcism… they sealed their fate wishing to take away Kamui.
For Subaru, his action/impulse to a darker power/not his own would be much deeper and larger than life. Kamui's only concern if that his lover is safe and sound… but Subaru holds (and likely always will) a fear he could become like Seishirou and cause the same damage to Kamui…the way Subaru perceives himself is blurry at best… and usually plain self-deprecating (even when he's done nothing wrong) …so Kamui is an absolute necessity for healing and finding a new life with happiness.
Also from earlier segments: I debated on mentioning anything about Subaru's parents….and when/if to make a scene regarding Hokuto's passing [and the 'ritual' Subaru misses during 1999 due to everything going on then). But I want Subaru to feel support, and have Kamui as he attends these events, so I finally added this on.
From an interview of CLAMP and I believe a page of X where Subaru first talks about how his "wish will hurt my loved ones" we can see his and Hokuto's parents are alive. I'm certain there's a strain to their relationship, living apart, and perhaps guilt having their son leave for intense and brutal Onmyouji training at a young age. Meanwhile, Subaru likely feels guilty holding himself responsible for not being able to save his sister. Hokuto and Subaru live in Tokyo on their own, and. The Sumeragi clan seems very serious and= follows traditions. So when your child is deemed the successor to the clan you follow along diligently and send them to whatever training is necessary.
Seeing his parents may feel more like being with a distant relative, they are estranged for so long and I'm sure had less of a connection than with Subaru and his grandmother. So Subaru introducing Kamui as his love would not hold the same nerves, not that he holds anything but pride in having Kamui as his love.
Kamui is seen as an angel (not Dragon or Earth kind haha) by most of the Sumeragi clan. He brings the light back to Subarus' world and slowly but surely restores the broken familial ties. So there is nothing but acceptance and happiness that Subaru finally has gained a will for living.
The next chapter… (maybe? 2 depending on how overly long I write the scenes) will be a finale for the story and more hopeful/lighter. Subaru will rely on and let himself fully lean on Kamui healing from the pain/apprehension of his curse.
I will follow up with a fluffy epilogue as well. I'm sure more story ideas will come for these two, likely one-shots. Thank you to everyone for reading so far on this long journey and hope you stay around till the end!
