Chapter 37- Epilogue- Primrose Part 2/2~ Finale

This is it. I am an emotional mess finishing the final epilogue chapter!~ This story has held such a place in my heart and part of my life so I have a lot of mixed emotions. Thank you all for reading, commenting, and bookmarking, kudos for all of that! I hope you enjoy this final chapter and maybe some one-shots in the future for these two!

Here we see, Subaru and Kamui continue to grow closer. Subaru plans to receive blessings from a certain someone important to Kamui's life.

This is a closing epilogue, a finale after the final chapter (because It is so hard for me to end stories) which makes me so very emotional! This story has been such a big part of my life, and this couple has been so precious to me for over half my life now T.T

~Journey~

Life continues to go on whether we are joyful or suffering., so even if it's selfish, why not follow the path that can bring you happiness?

And if that path didn't bring on much sadness to others, then all the better…Of course, there was no path in life to take that could make everyone happy. A lesson long learned, and a life deprived of the feeling of bliss for so long…it's a wonder how they made it this far. Yet, perhaps, they made it together because they were together.

"I know it's a cliche but…" Kamui laughs to himself, hand and hand with his precious boyfriend. The sunsetting and painting sky in beautiful shades of orange and red, only made the scene more enchanting. "I really do like these long walks-"

"On the beach?" Subaru finishes for him quietly, gazing out at the ocean waves. Their eyes gaze into one another, shimmering and rising with amusement. And like that, laughter begins to slip through their lips.

So helplessly, Subaru stops their slow little stroll, in order to come face to face with Kamui. His fingers thread so gently through his love's long raven bangs, brushing them behind his ear, and dusting off a bit of sand between strands.

"Thank you…" Kamui melts into the touch, cheek leaning in, lingering here. He places his hand over Subaru's which continues to caress and move up and down his cheekbones. "I think…I've become a sap…" He snorts, shaking his head, at what must be obvious.

"Ah…I don't think so…" Subaru hesitates on his word choice. "Perhaps it's more…like you've gotten the opportunity to just relax…and truly feel…instead of always needing to react."

"You make everything sound better…I also think, I really love hearing your voice," Kamui admits, sheepishly, cheeks heating under his lover's fingertips."I've definitely…changed…But…if it's with you…I can't mind that."

Subaru squeezes their linked hands tightly. He rests their foreheads against each other, as the sun finally begins to settle in for the night.

"I can empathize…with changing." He begins, brushing their lips ever so slightly, his hand laid firmer across Kamui's cheek and jawline. "I know I've become way more interested…in being romantic…I always thought that was more an experience for someone else…not so much for me…"

"Why not you?" Kamui questions, tilting his head slightly. His toes curled at the feeling of his lover stepping closer. That little distance between them closed, as they flushed, chest to chest.

Subaru released his hand, in favor of snaking his arm around the sleek waist, keeping him protectively close with just the right amount of 'possessive' to make his beloved shiver. All in all making Kamui feel reassured…his everything belonged with Subaru. And the feeling was absolutely returned.

"Because until…I met you…that kind of happiness…" He pauses their mouths close enough in a way, they would touch, pressing in for kisses as they spoke. "Seemed so out of reach…. I had my own obligations."

"You always have been burdened with responsibilities…enough to not allow yourself what you truly want," Kamui reflects, solemnly, and cuddles up closer, their legs brushing.

Subaru interjects with a frown, always seeing Kamui's issues more than feeling bad for his own. "You've had burdens beyond what I can imagine…so I can't speak…not knowing your pain…and a fate so-"

Kamui grasped onto his collar, tugging him down, closer. Pulled into a deeper, calming little kiss. "I can't say I understand all your pain exactly…but I do feel it's unfair…I at least was allowed a rebellious phase…"

"Ah, your rebellious phase?" Subaru repeats, gold and green orbs laced with amusement and laughter. So much beauty, drawing Kamui in closely. "It's interesting for me to imagine…though I wouldn't want you feeling less joy…having to act out…I can't help but be curious as to each part of your life. It's not a side of you I can imagine seeing now."

"No...Only….if you want me to be…" Kamui returns, biting on his lip, feeling heat rise before his mind can process the words. If Subaru wanted him to act out…bratty…in their privacy, he certainly wouldn't deny this. He definitely didn't mind Subaru's version of discipline. "That came out…." He shook his head quickly. "No, it's not. I can't take it back…in that way…I wouldn't mind…acting out… for you"

"Oh…well…" Subaru loses his breath, going wide-eyed. With his throat going dry he swallows hard. Blushing up to his ears, he murmurs something along the lines of…being alright with the idea in their private time. "I know I'll love every side of you…"He murmurs, making Kamui go from his playful seductive side to a melting lovesick fool.

"I love all of you too…and it hurts, knowing you've had a lot of restrictions on happiness, what you want…so many expectations…" Kamui shook his head, emotion welling up inside, threatening to slip from his eyes, and sink down his chest. Lightening the mood, he adds, "I suppose it's good I'm here to let you know when you're working yourself too hard…taking on so much…otherwise I don't know if you'd ever stop working. "

The words are meant as a playful little joke. Kamui licks his lips before curling them up. But then Subaru…speaks words so direct from his heart, it makes him breathless. ` ` `

"You're completely right I'm beyond lucky," Subaru complies, entirely shameless. His words fall so seemingly easily. "You're the best part of my life…"

"I…." Kamui, never knowing what his boyfriend would say next, would shift his world. Flustered from the open, and affection, he hides his face… "You're everything…" He murmurs, letting himself slip away into the moment, as they cuddled up, in their own corner of the beach, unhurried and content to simply be.

Adventurous~

Memories were made right here between them. Even small little shops or cafes could be made into precious memories with his favorite person.

Continuing with visits to the local castles to more informal activities going for a stroll away from the crowds, allowing for plenty of privacy. Moments sparked between them, feeling so shiny and new…every kiss and touch reinvigorated their connection.

Exploring the little unknown hiding spots on the island had been a plus. For more reasons than one, they could sneak away. Feeling brought into Kamui's world, as their physical relationship grew further.

There is a hidden cavern far off from the tourist attractions. This one rather abandoned the long-hanging rocks. Their shape looked more like daggers, rather sharp and seeming to keep others away. But that was perfect for this little plan.

"Let's go inside…" Kamui insists, licking at his lips. He couldn't bring himself to do such things where others could certainly come by. But this place…fooling around here…was enticing. He wrapped his fingers around Subaru's wrist.

The water surrounded the one platform in the back. It appeared like an extra barrier, keeping others away from the time meant just for them.

"In here but there's-" Subaru questions, starting out bewilderedly. His love was insistent on getting them into the back of the hidden cavern. The harsh rocky walls hadn't hindered the excitement.

Perhaps, Kamui had gotten aroused in the past by more intense activities…but with Subaru, it was different and safe.

"There isn't anyone else here…" Kamui purrs, fingers dancing upon his lover's shirt. Intentionally, he pulls his lover in by his shirt collar. "Just us…" He speaks breathily. Insistently, he tugs him down, crashing their lips together. Burning, heated kisses they've held back on for their earlier explorations could finally come out here.

After their years together, they'd experienced intimacy in many ways. Being like that outdoors, in a public setting, was not one of them, for good reasons. "I'm certain…" He'd lived long enough to know the areas where tourists deemed….and in the back of a dimly lit cavern like this was not one of them. "So please…"

"I….m-maybe…." Subaru begins to falter. His hands flew down Kamui's sides, resting on his lower back. He begins grasping him, seeking to feel more, and slipping his hands underneath the bright summer top. The younger male becomes insistent, upon moving even further, back his beloved into the wall, and sliding his tongue inside.

Every little nook and crevice inside Subaru's mouth became explored, from the sensitive roof of his mouth and gums to tangling with his lover's tongue. The lewder and more forward their kisses became the lower Subaru's hands slipped down.

'Always so concerned for me…even when I'm the one who initiated… ' Kamui loved bringing out his boyfriend's more erotic side. There was nothing else quite like his gentle-hearted nature, so comforting and with concern.

"Mhm, so are you~ and I promise I'm fine," Kamui reminds his love once more. He leans his head to the side letting his beloved clean around his neck and shoulders. "It's always so good with you…Did you feel good too?" He questions as though he hadn't felt the way his lover came with him.

Subaru pauses in his work, a hand towel, lying on his lover's stomach. "Very much so…" He kneels down, cleaning his lover's legs, feet, and toes. Rising again he indulges in leaving the washcloth. With several pumps of shampoo he lathers. "Right now, I want to make sure you can be cleaned up… and feeling relaxed."

"Thank you…" Violet-blue orbs closed with satisfaction, as he leaned his head back. His lover carefully cleaned and conditioned his hair until it was sparkling and smooth.

Kamui indulged in the gentle-hearted side of his beloved, which came out naturally. Happily, he leaned back between his lover's legs in the background. Feelings of fervor overcame him as arms slipped around him from behind, and a comforting, throbbing chest met with his back.

Remnants…

Properly cleaning off at the hotel, a feeling of rejuvenation kicked in. "There still are more places I want to show you~" Kamui replied happily, re-exploring childhood memories, without being struck by the painful ones to follow.

Here and now he could make new memories and look back at this place, with Subaru.

"Are you sure you're alright going down here?" Subaru had always been considerate, not wanting Kamui to feel the pressure to go out, to places that bring out more pain.

But Kamui was ready…for the most part.

"I mean…I can't quite go down that exact street…not anymore…" Not since mother died there…. The visions of haunting and deadly flames were just too much to bear. He did, however, agree to the idea that if there was something, possibly surviving the flames, those years that came after…it might be nice to have something to remember her by.

Unbeknownst exactly how, he knew Subaru had used a few connections, hiding those behind the scenes, to explore his lover's further home, see…that would be too difficult to retrieve on one's own.

But going to that old home personally would be too much. The streets surrounding the neighborhood didn't feel nearly as heavy.

"That's the book store I went by a few times…and there was the ice cream shop I used to visit with my Mothers and-" Kamui cheerily points out all the various spots in their town. Some memories are bittersweet yet still feel lighter. Subaru grasps his hand, pulling it up to his lips.

"What?" Kamui returns, only slightly perturbed by his beloved's bemused face.

"You're just…" Subaru lingers upon the moment, "Adorable…Let's go to that ice cream shop~" He insists, wanting to see the sparkling eyes, and nostalgic smile return as his Kamui, his adorable- sweet tooth could indulge in the treat.

New memories could take over those more painful. Kamui realized, his thoughts of his mother now were not solely those involving despair and pain…but the precious memories and little moments passing by where he grew up.

For so long…since the day his mother passed, he'd been searching for answers…and now he had it…Alongside someone who cherished and loved him this much. Sweetly offering to go to a place he knew Kamui would love, despite not being so interested in sweets himself.

Although, when entering the hotel, it hadn't turned into a usual night of relaxing and cuddling. Subaru received a call almost immediately, from an informant working with the Sumeragi clan…claiming they found a few hidden belongings at the old abandoned building.

Apparently, With so little known, and the mystery surrounding …no known family was left to give belongings to…or even to put resources into excavating.

After discussing details, a plane was set. A knock at the door came in, and a mysterious, suited man, bowed before the Sumeragi leader. "This was all that was found…" He reported on the findings, handing Subaru…a few padded envelopes.

Within them were just a few items. First to be seen had been an old gray leather diary. Next, they uncovered a few photo frames of a young Kamui and his mother. The glass frame was broken but memories were still preserved. The photos were kept in the padding, and plans for a new frame and restoration could come later.

This would all be overwhelming after all..he could feel it just upon touching these contents again. He could feel like the past had been so embedded within. Some even from a past he never got to know.

"This is…really hers…" Kamui hugged the book, tightly to his chest. Shimmering violet eyes began to well up. He allowed his boyfriend to spoil him, placing a comforting arm around him, after cuddling up his body in a nice warm blanket, still warm, fresh out of the hotel's dryers.

"I'm sorry…maybe it wasn't the best idea…after everything…" Subaru attempted to explain, wanting nothing more to take the pain away. "It's all that could be found…I'm sorry I-"

"No," Kamui shook his head, leaving the diary on his lap. He favored wrapping his arms around his boyfriend's neck. After all this time…to find something like this…thank you…Subaru…"

Knowing the memories that could resurface and revelations, he wanted to at least ask. "Are you sure…you're okay?"

"I…" Kamui laughs a little anxiously, tears wanting to well up. "It's overwhelming but…I do want to take a look…"

Flipping open the first page his eyes widened, as he read…

'To my precious son Kamui…You've gone through tremendous burdens to carry in life, and I'm sorry I can't be there with you any longer…You have the power, to change the world- but above all, I wish for you to seek your own happiness-

And with that Kamui hastily closed the book. Subaru turned to him with weary, concerned eyes. He clasped Kamui's hand holding it to his lap.

"I…I…I'm not quite ready for this…" Kamui answers, honestly wearily, he needed the time. All in good time, he would read…this record being precious whether teaching about the Magami clan or his mother's perspective there was a lot that could be gained.

For now…Kamui slipped the diary into the envelope, leaving it preserved…until it became a little less overwhelming. Maybe one day…

It was all so sudden, besides they had a rather emotional meeting tomorrow. He wanted to put his best foot forward and honor, without his mind flooded with this new information…and his mother's words.

Their night hadn't ended in passion or lovemaking… but still such intimacy. Kamui shared stories of his mother he assumed he'd long since forgotten. Cradled in his beloved arms, things felt safe…

-Blessings…-

Clasping hands, they proceed to walk forward through a long grassy field before their destination would be reached. This visit was not as light-hearted as some of their earlier escapades, but this certainly held importance.

Kamui keeps his gaze down, in fear of losing control of his emotions. This place…he hadn't gotten to visit until after the promised year. His mother's gravesite…

Subaru took on the bulk of the carrying things, knowing his love would be drained enough. Holding an offered bucket, scoop, and incense to light they were ready.

Kamui held an arm full of flowers. Colorful ones, hopeful ones… even these, Subaru insisted on purchasing himself. Always, wanting to give and give…giving everything to those he kept close to his heart.

Though… Kamui could guess it hadn't mattered either way. They shared everything together now, working the same jobs together. Still, it was no secret, Subaru was well off and had the time and experience to make enough money so he and his lover would want for nothing. Subaru was the reason Kamui could get work like this, and he vowed to never take that for granted.

'I'd like to do at least this much. Honoring the life of the one who brought the one I love into the world is the least…' Subaru expresses, so tenderly, and endearingly to Kamui. Barely stepping into the floral shop, and here they were already gaining quite the attention.

And oh, did the florist flush at the smitten scene. The older woman working there held a hand to her cheek, likely imagining when she found her own special person. Kamui is quite certain, there was no one she or anyone could have found, quite as special as Subaru.

Subaru gazes upon Kamui as if he was his whole world, all the light in his life, both are exactly what he'd proven himself to be. Kamui may have found himself sniffling all the way on the walk out of the flower shop.

Crying in front of Subaru was never a worry. His beloved had seen him at his worst and loved him all the same. But… even if she couldn't see him he wanted to be presentably approaching the grave.

'Magami Tohru'

"Mother…" Kamui murmurs the word, reading the name with an aching longing. He would always miss her… he was certain, but the ache lingered more at times like this. He looked to his right, seeing such kindness, and patience in gold and emerald eyes.

Kamui squeezed his lover's hand almost painfully tight. At this time now, his pain has not stemmed from solely the loss and memories, but the what-ifs. He found sadness that his mother could never meet with Subaru. Nor could she see her son finding true happiness. At least not in this realm.

The notion alone made Kamui ache, practically falling to his knees in front of the site. Subaru sits, protectively, behind him, pulling him back. Treasuring arms wrap around the slender waist, and pull Kamui into his warmth.

"My sweet…Kamui…" Subaru calls for him so very sweetly. His hands soothingly brush up and down Kamui's arms before kneeling beside him. "I'm so sorry…" These words that could come out readily by many feel so earnest and novel… Subaru expressing them demonstrates he truly meant every word. Leaning close, he buries his face in his lover's shoulder, kissing where it met Kamui's neck. "If I could… I'd take on your pain for you but I…"

"Subaru…" Kamui murmurs…feeling a tightness in his chest and feels the need to grab hold of shakes his head. Beautiful eyes are surrounded by a puffy red frame. "I'd do the same for you… so I don't want you to feel pain either…you have had plenty enough pain for one lifetime."

"But you… you mean the most to me… and I…" Subaru stumbled, searching desperately for the words. Nothing seemed good enough. He felt his lover lunging towards him, he took in everything, allowing Kamui the closure and sanctuary needed.

"It's… not…. Just the loss… I… I was…" Kamui has to steady his breathing, tears dampening his lover's shirt.

"Shhh… my love," Subaru coos, softly, sweetly, and with more than enough sincerity to make a new bout of tears stream down.

"It's that… I know she would love you if…" Kamui swallowed, returning to his safe haven. He clutched tighter at his lover's shirt, turning and wrinkling the fabric, desperately. "If…only…" Streams of rapidly flowing emotions spilled from violet eyes.

Sheltering arms kept him tucked away safely until the storm could calm down. "It's alright, Kamui… I…." Subaru starts feeling his chest tighten, his core feeling heaviness. "It's alright… being here with you now… I'm honored… and ah…."

Now Subaru found the storming sense of sorrow slip from his lower eyelids. He never allowed himself hope… before Kamui. But he did know he worked with the deceased so many times there was a chance something more was out there beyond death.

"I will spend all my life ensuring you never feel alone," Subaru professes, words ripping right out from his heart. Kamui whimpers, heart flooding with strong breathtaking emotion.

"I love you… so so much… I…" Kamui buries his eyes beside his boyfriend's throat. "I need you."

"I'm here…." Subaru assures tightening the embrace and allowing his pained lover all the time he needed to feel. "Always" While Kamui slipped out, in an attempt to clean his mother's resting place, the tears started falling again.

"Let's… get some more water…" Subaru offers to grasp Kamui's hand and lifts them both to their feet. A little movement and space seemed necessary. The younger male stays quiet but follows closely, clutching to the side of his lover's shirt.

Their emptied bucket is soon filled with clear water from a fountain off to the main building on site. Taking the weight for Kamui he grabbed the bucket and carried it over as they made it back to the burial site.

"We'll get started then…" Subaru hums, taking a scoop and pouring the clean water over the site. Kamui clasps a towel, dipping it into the water, ringing it out, and cleaning off any dust or dirt around. He and Subaru take turns as they clean until the memorial space feels entirely clean.

One last scoop of water is poured down at the top of the stone; it feels cathartic. The task was done. Even if she couldn't be here now, Kamui liked to think he did something good to honor his mother's resting place.

"Thank you…" Kamui whispers shakily, his lips quivering. His precious person helps him down so they both sit together, before the tall memorial. Spreading out the beautiful assortment of flowers and lighting the lavender incense finalized their work.

"Anything for you…." Subaru ensured, eyes deepening with such sincerity. Gold and emerald locked onto violet and blue. Slowly, needily their lips found each other. The soft comforting kisses gave a needed breath of life amongst the suffocating grief.

'You'll never be alone… ' were silent words spread between the pair. While things remained innocent and sweet, it hadn't sunk in that they were displaying such affection here.

"Mother, I miss you so much...I want you to know..wherever you are, I hope you are happy..." Kamui begins speaking, the feeling cathartic, even if the conversation could not be given a reply. On the chance, his mother could see them… Kamui felt the need to clarify. "But..I want you to know...Subaru… He's… the one I'm going to spend my life with…. So… we can't help but…" He blushes a wild cherry red, recalling the languishing kisses given in comfort. "I love him. He makes me so happy… Mother, I hope one day… wherever you are… you can see that."

The earnest profession took Subaru''s breath away. His lips parted, mouth slightly open, whilst his eyes raised. To have someone this precious say such things about him. "Kamui…"

"I know that must seem…." Kamui begins, feigning a smile, but he can't finish. Violet-blue orbs shiver, pained emotions take over, and lips start trembling. Quickly, he finds arms around him, being scooped up into an embrace.

"No, I thought it was incredibly sweet," Subaru insists, kissing soft lips again. Lost in the embrace, so many comforting moments of closeness take place. Kamui is allowed just to be, and feel, no questions asked, nothing demanded of him. Giving in to the kindness, he lingers, curling up into the embrace, and cuddling as he needs.

"I'm going to get some water... " Kamui manages to say once he gathers himself, how many moments later? He is unsure, but the red puffy circles around his eyes tell him it had been a lot. Of course, his boyfriend never once held a complaint, certainly, he'd wait there all night with him if needed.

"Just to clear my head…" Speaking calmly enough Kamui gets up to his feet, gesturing to a drinking fountain. Crying like that felt draining… He was needing a little break.

"Would you like me to go with you?" Subaru calls out, weary of leaving Kamui alone.

"I won't be long… I just need to clear my head… Unless you want to come? " The offer lingers and ordinarily an offer which would be taken without deliberation.

Subaru sensed his love needed a little time and space to breathe and clear his head on his own, for a few moments. While planning on doing this another day, this was an opportunity for Subaru to ask an important question….

"So long as you are alright…I'll be waiting here for you… and ah I do… have some things I'd like to say to your mother…" Subaru smiled so tenderly then.

"To say to her…" Kamui repeats the words quizzically, raising his eyes. "Alright then…" He shrugs, lips turning up, not fully getting it but deeming this special to his lover. So he steals a tender kiss before rising to his feet. "I'll be back in a minute…" His most precious person was talking with his beloved late mother… he was truly lucky.

Even if there wasn't a typical way to receive an answer…. Subaru deemed it appropriate to 'ask' his lover's closest and most precious family member for her blessings.

"Hello… Miss Magami, Tohru…Ah, My name is Sumeragi Subaru, as you've heard from Kamui." He introduced himself, shakily. It's something he'd done countless times, but this felt so different, his nerves kicked in. As though he were at a formal meeting with his lover's family.

"Be… Before everything, you should know how much your son means to me." Subaru begins with a long breath, fondness overwhelming inside. He couldn't fight that smile rising, for the world. "He is absolutely my everything…" The stirring in his chest only further validated the words.

"Kamui is perfect as you know, so kind-hearted, beautiful in every way conceivable. … and has saved me in a way I could spend a lifetime and never truly begin to repay… I'm not... I feel no one on this earth is truly worthy of your son… but…" Swift enamored and powerful emotions rolled over his body, he could feel them swelling from his eyes. "Even still. No matter. My heart will never let him go. "

"I should thank you… for bringing such light into this world. I love your son more than anything… and so I'd like to ask…." Subaru pauses, voice going a little hoarse. His hands curl in at his side, overwhelmed. He bows his head in front of the resting place.

"I may not be able to get a vocalized answer… but I still felt it right to ask for your blessing…."

Now would be the moment. Closing his eyes, another deep breath, Subaru asks with every bit of sincerity, his entire being.

"I hope to work up the courage to propose soon… Please, I am saying this in hopes to have..." Or perhaps even feel. "Your blessing to marry, your son…Kamui has brought me so much happiness in a world of pure agony…He taught me how to love again, and I will promise to take care of him for the rest of our lives. Kamui is so…." Subaru opens his glossy eyes upon emitting the last words. The new waves of tears well up not falling but enough to blur his vision. "So incredible…" Though his voice grows weak and a little cracked… he continues.

"I promise I will give my all to make sure Kamui lives a life of happiness. I want to bring Kamui into my family so he won't feel alone… and give him everything his heart desires… To make any and all his dreams come true… so please even if we can't communicate … I hope to receive your blessing, and promise I'll do everything I can to make him happy… "

After the words were expressed, Subaru left a bittersweet sigh. He turned around, expecting to see his lover walking in. The idea he would eventually propose was no secret… and he doubted Kamui would object to asking for a blessing, especially after his lover professed Subaru was the person he loved.

Though selfishly, Subaru knew himself… even if circumstances were different… there was some objection, he would never give Kamui up… happily eloping with him if need be… Kamui is worth everything.

"Subaru you…. " Kamui cries out, holding a hand over his lips, knees going weak. 'So that's what you wanted to ask…'

Subaru stands up, spreading his arms and allowing his love in.

Kamui rushes in, heart wildly going off, and lunges right into the embrace. Never in his life would he dream he could be this lucky to be enraptured in such love."You're so….wonderful…. I…I love you and I…"

'I must have fallen in love with you all over again.'

Timing

The idea of Subaru eventually asking him the question seemed inevitable. It did make Kamui feel ridiculously happy, but lately on edge. Just knowing something would happen…. But never knowing when it would occur.

He heard what Subaru had professed to his mother. The words touched his heart. And it seemed like… the way Subaru held his hand, and kissed his fingers more thoroughly meant something.

'Perhaps… I should propose too? ' Kamui shook his head unsure what to do in this situation. 'Am I getting ahead of myself…?'

Popping the question didn't come up anytime after their vacation. Maybe Subaru planned on taking his time to ask, after getting or asking for Kamui's mother's blessings.

It was never an urgency for them before, relationship titles were nice but what mattered most was being close. Yet, since he knew this proposal that would eventually happen… anticipation started eating at him.

Kamui nearly lost his breath in anticipation. When his lover kneeled, but only to tie his shoe. Or moments like now when Subaru reached for his hand, at a soft beautiful beachside restaurant. This place reserved for them was so luxurious and beautiful that it held a perfect view of the ocean and the constellations above.

"Kamui," Subaru's arm stretched across the silk-covered table. His long fingers curled over to clasp over Kamui's fingertips. Gentle fingers were brought to warm lips, every tip and knuckle kissed lavishly. Lowering the hand down, he didn't break their hold, instead clasping for Kamui's palm to rest upon his own.

The back of Kamui's left hand was indeed the target of affection. Truly, the younger man swore he saw Subaru glance over his ring finger with a hint of anxiousness.

"I love you so much and…" Subaru began in another of many moments, what felt like a pivotal moment. Kamui's heart stopped, his emotions were wild and ready to burst up. He finds himself almost rising out of his seat. "It's a shame it's our last night here… have you been enjoying the trip?"

"Oh…!" Kamui felt guilt letting a hint of disappointment drop on his face. He quickly shook it off, shaking his head. 'Maybe he changed his mind… or probably has another place planned in the future… it's fine I can wait…' He mentally walked himself through the possibilities.

"Yes, I love being here with you," Kamui smiles with sincerity, heart still racing and expectant. "Thank you…" He leaned across the table, their lips meeting. Their privacy was granted, behind a bouquet of roses centered on the table.

It hadn't been on their trip to Okinawa. But that hadn't made their final evening lacking in intimacy or romance. Not by a long shot… pressed up against the walls, shower tiles, dresser, and bed at various angles…

There was no shortage of love that evening. Nor is anything amiss. It just wasn't the right timing… and Kamui would learn to relax with that, although anticipation made it difficult.

'I never dreamed I'd live to see a day where I could get married…' Not since he was a pure naive child seeking to become Kotori's bride… The recurring thought flew through Kamui's mind.

'But now that I know it's a possibility….' Kamui reflects further, biting his lip. "I can't help but want that…'

Declaring to the world they were so deeply in love and devoted. To be surrounded by their loved ones… to one day call Subaru his Husband… Kamui drifted off with a dreamy sigh. He rests his head on his lover's shoulder, traveling back to Tokyo. 'Subaru has to know my answer anyway...'

For now, he would wait, albeit with an eager emotion. Kamui didn't want to spoil Subaru's potential plans by asking the question first…but he wanted to give back something.

Subaru leaned his head to the side resting on the crown of Kamui's head. So sweetly, he kept their hands linked and on his lap.

'You make me so happy Subaru…' At the least, Kamui wanted to plan for gifting Subaru a ring, very soon.

-Sakura -

Nightmares. To think of such soft pink petals, such beauty could be the cause of destruction and heartache.

Frighteningly, the soft colorful petals began to break. The entire scenery changed to pitch black. The only source of light beginning to glow is that of the fatally beautiful Sakura tree.

"Why am I here…?" Subaru asks looking around, to see the setting even more peculiar. On the road beside it, the world itself seemed to fade to black.

"Is this your way of calling me?" Subaru asks, approaching the tree. Extending his arm, he places his palm flat on the trunk trying to understand. And yet…

There is only more mystery added. He sees a quick flash, of a blurry cloaked figure. Going on guard, Subaru begins deciding upon spells that may be needed to use to keep the visitor away, while keeping the tree safe. His eyes raised, stomach-lurching, this didn't seem right.

His first thought, despite knowing of his fate was- "Seish-" Subaru started, feeling a sharp stab against his chest… For his mended heart's sake that was not the case. No there was something different here. This 'person' holding an aura like no one else… but yet even seems familiar.

"Who are you?" He calls out walking towards the mystery figure with caution. When he comes closer, the light of the cherry tree illuminates the figure's face.

"I am you…" Pulling off the hood of a coal-black coat, he unveils himself. A spitting image of Subaru appears in front of him, just like looking in a mirror. The only difference being the other Subaru was almost entirely cloaked in darkness. His attire consisted of solely coal-black color from head to toe. The light in his eyes nearly disappeared, dimmed out, and seemed hollow.

Subaru leaped back, reaching towards his side. He holds out the ofuda, placing it between his hands, and charging it with energy.

"I'm not going to fight you…" The figure holds a hand up and laughs. His laughter even is cynical and yet seems so lost. "I only wish to talk to you."

"To talk…" Subaru seems unconvinced. Still, he continues keeping himself at a distance. "Why do we look so…"

"I am your darkness…" The 'other' Subaru returns. Bitterly he glances down as light begins to glow beneath the tree. "Or rather the darkness that could come over you. A possibility among countless in your path of lights.

The light turns to a disturbing crimson red, and several figures too distorted to make out, lie beneath.

"So many sacrifices…" Subaru notes, finding the raw scent of blood dizzying. He holds a hand up over his mouth to keep from breathing in more. "What is this…"

His shadow self laughs bitterly and shakes his head. "This is your potential…"

Emerald and gold eyes widened at the words. Subaru turned his gaze away, closing his eyes. This isn't reality… He tells himself, it couldn't be. "But… this isn't the path I've chosen for myself. I won't become like him."

A sense of assurance and pride came from Kamui's smile. All those reassuring words, and promises to stay by his side, to be his light, it kept him going. "I have someone important to me, I must protect and keep happy… he's saved me from ever becoming like him."

"For him? " His other self doesn't miss a beat, his smiles seeming so hollow. "Kamui~"

Subaru turns back at the first syllable of his beloved name. His protective nature kicks in, eyes becoming icy, glaring. "What do you know about Kamui?"

"Ah, that's quite a scary look there…" Lifeless eyes rolled back, mocking the true Subaru. "Such devotion…protecting what matters most. Your predecessor also held love… protected you…"

Subaru winced at the words, the memories, that kind-hearted person he believed in for so long. Now, he knew better, taking a chance to breathe before reacting. "My love for Kamui is different… I won't lose myself and make him unhappy… he's given me so much… so I won't ever go down that road,

"Kamui is quite incredible but tell me….With darkness inside of you…" For some reason, his tone begins wavering. The mocking, bitter voice turned more…lonely. "Do you truly believe you deserve happiness with him?" He questions before seeming to dissolve, a series of cherry blossoms travel to the wind.

"Wait!" Those last words haunted Subaru's mind, causing him to jolt up out of bed. He looked around the bedroom feverishly, catching his breath…

A dream… A nightmare. His own fears manifested into all of that. If that curse took over him if he hadn't been healed by Kamui…would he truly become that person? So hollow…pained and devoid of hope.

He never could imagine feeling worthy of such love… nor happiness… after his loved ones have suffered so much. Worthiness may not be there…but still he'd much rather die than deny himself the one person who gave his world hope again.

' I can't stay away from the person I love…even if I don't deserve Kamui…I'm still wishing for my own happiness, to always be with him.'

"Subaru!" Kamui cries out, shattering the despairing thoughts within an instant.

This wasn't just about his happiness anymore…Kamui's happiness….and his own were intertwined. He could never deny Kamui a chance to be happy… even if he didn't understand how someone so incredible could love him this deeply.

"What's wrong?" Kamui bolts up to a sitting position. He cradles Subaru's cheek in his right hand. "You…. You're crying…"

"Just a… dream…" Subaru meant to say calmly, but the flood of emotions… the fear of losing himself took over. He fell into his lover's slender yet strong embrace.

Kamui's heart squeezes, stomach sinking on seeing his beloved so torn up. "Shh...Subaru…I am here with you…. Do you want to talk about it?"

Always so patient, compassionate, and loving.

'How did I ever get this blessed?' Subaru reflects, fawning over his lover.

Comforting… assuring those arms entangle and tighten over Subaru's back and shoulders.

Subaru lets himself fall apart completely. He collapses, weight dropping into Kamui's chest causing them both to fall back to the mattress. Every tear that's shed Kamui brushes away, and every word of doubt and fear becomes overpowered by a sincere "I love you."

So Subaru lets himself go, feeling everything so deeply. His eyes continued to rush with a stream of emotion, pain, longing…and so much fear. Completely bawling, emotions spilling out as images of the short yet painful dream take place.

Kamui threads his finger through his lover's soft hair. Listening to the haunting images of Subaru's nightmare. "Those were fears coming out… that's what I think Subaru… you worry so much about what you could be and don't give credit for the person you are. These were his thoughts but not reality. I know you…"

"Kamui…I…" Subaru holds doubts, cuddling closer. He wants to believe in what Kamui sees in him. "I never want to hurt you. I couldn't live with myself if I did and I- "

"Subaru…" Kamui shushes him, leaving kisses on the top of his head. "You won't hurt me. Your heart is so kind Subaru… I know you give your everything to those you love."

Even if it was selfish or he didn't… deserve someone so… perfect. This time around he couldn't…. Wouldn't deny himself a chance or happiness.

"I love you the most…" Subaru expresses, eyes teary but feeling free. "I will give you everything Kamui… anything you need I promise I-"

Silencing with tender kisses… they fell into the moment. In a world for just the two of them where gentle touches spoke volumes. Subaru leaned up to pin Kamui's hands to the pillows as he kissed him with everything he could muster.

Their love ran far too deep to ever give in to fear. Yet… while sleeping, Subaru cuddles his beloved ear on the small chest listening for the heart's melody. "Kamui, do I truly deserve happiness…? "

"Of course… you…" Kamui shakes his head, disbelieving that someone this wonderful could see himself in a distorted light. He would always remind him. "You deserve the world and even beyond that… If anyone decided who 'deserves' happiness…and tried to take it away from you. I'd defy everything to make sure you would always have a chance to feel happy."

"Kamui…" Subaru breaks in his voice, waterfalling emotions beneath his eyes.

"… I'm never letting you go." Kamui promise, peppering little kisses then places a hand on Subaru's neck. A long lavished kiss is given as they longer. "I love you, Please, just let me care for you tonight."

-Eternally -

True to his word, Kamui spoiled his boyfriend. Caring for him, giving comfort relentlessly. It went beyond the evening. Waking up in Kamui's arms, being held, comforted like no other felt like a dream.

And it was that night Subaru knew…. There may never be a perfect time to ask this question that would only bring them closer, whether for different trips, the anniversary, holidays… In his heart he knew, he wanted Kamui to be a part of every aspect of his life, to show the world his devotion.

With assistance from Kamui's friends, he would have his lover brought out of the house for the day. Or just long enough to set things up.

It wouldn't be the most luxurious or fancy but it would be made with love. He was quite certain, Kamui would prefer that anyway. Nothing too over the top, and with privacy… this would make a moment just for the two of them.

'I love you,' An incoming text message popped up, as though to further steal Subaru's heart… his everything all over again.

'I love you too, I hope you have fun at your movie and the mall.'

Subaru responds with that feather-light softness. He had a feeling Kamui was suspicious. The young man did like his time with his friends, but the invite and Yuzuriha's insistence may have been over the top. Still, Kamui went along with the plan and the sudden invite from his friends.

'I'll let you know if it's any good… if it is we should watch it together next time… and if it's not I think we could still make it a memorable movie date~"

The playful and suggestive words left Subaru flustering. They shared all too fond memories, in the dark movie theater, cuddled up in their corner becoming lost in sweet touches and varying degrees of kisses.

'Part of me hopes it's terrible now…' Subaru blushed with a sweep of red across his cheekbones. Still, he couldn't hide his delight… his lover was always thinking of him, planning more dates…

'That sounds perfect.' Subaru replies with a simple yet decisive response. He knew his boyfriend would approve.

With that, and getting Yuzuriha and Keiichi on board for ice cream. Subaru could estimate he would have at least until sundown. Still, he needed to get started. Slipping on his coat, he holds shakily to the doorknob and breathes calming breaths.

'This is finally happening…' Today would be the day.

Rushing out to the store to run errands, he purchases some essentials for Kamui's surprise. He holds the knowledge his sister had told him ages ago, about what would make for a 'perfect romantic evening'. Hee also recalls a few times flipping through TV channels and witnessing a few 'romance tips'. Besides that, he goes off on things he knows Kamui loves… all his favorites…

Time. Time seemed to rush past the next Meetup. This time Kamui

The eternal Spring weather on campus made for a nice break from outside.

Those present in the group sat at the picnic tables, a board game spread out in the center. Something so simple but much preferred to be bonded over.

"So who is going to get the lovebirds?" Karen teases, pointing her long manicured finger towards the couple finally approaching.

Subaru and Kamui were already snuggled up, arms looped together, hand in hand, fingers laced lovingly. There was an even more amorous air about them, as they took an extra long time to get to the park. Every little place on campus that held memories, led to them sneaking off, stealing kisses, and recalling their time here. A peaceful bubble, amongst all the chaos, allowed the pair a break from their usual world.

Oblivious to the world outside them having just gotten engaged days prior. To be fair, making it out this far was no small feat when they barely made it out of the bedroom.

Subaru gently reached for the flower petal that fell into Kamui's hair. The lilac color brought out more of the blue highlights amongst the silky black hair. He took the petal, threading it between his fingers, and pressed it upon his lips.

Kamui flushed, but closed his eyes, intent on accepting the incoming kiss. When those familiar lips brushed his temples and not his lips… he pouted slightly. The sulky young man reached behind his fiancé's neck to pull him into a lip lock. Soft laughter… gentle adoring words… truly lost in their own world.

Gradually, they made it out to the garden they were meant to meet at…some time ago.

"Hey love birds, we're over here!" Yuzuriha called out joyously, waving the couple over.

While not confirmed she had an idea as to what may have made them even more affectionate than usual. She did help with taking Kamui to hang out that day…

"Sorry, we are… a bit late," Kamui bowed his head, the smile on his lips showing he felt anything but rosy reddened cheeks.

"Nonsense, we're just glad to see you both." Thank goodness for Seiichiro Aoki. His genuine kindness and sense of oblivion to the pair's more mature activities kept them late. It saved the pair a series of embarrassing questions. At last from him…

Kamui and Subaru smiled, nodding as a silent thank you. They looked towards Arashi who in turn shared a polite silent greeting.

"Come sit down!" Yuzuriha practically leaped from the bench. Eagerly, she grasps Kamui's wrist, pulling him to sit down next to her. Subaru follows suit sitting down on the other side of his beloved.

By the time Kamui places his arm back down, a shimmer from the sunlight flashes near his left hand. Light reflects upon it, colors dancing, even brighter than before.

All eyes fall on the lovely couple.

"Ooh, has something happened between you two?" Karen's eyes shimmer with delight. She giggles, knowingly looking toward the pair. She definitely saw something there, and it didn't take long to guess.

"Well…" Kamui scratched his cheek, accidentally revealing the ring a second time.

"Oh my gosh!" And… Yuzuriha excitedly bounced in her seat, similar to. She sighs dreamily, a romantic at heart. Her fingers curl together and rest under her chin.

Subaru clasps Kamui's hand. Gazing deeply into each other's shining eyes for a moment they reach a decision, nodding.

"We do have news…" Kamui professes with a light dust of pink on his cheeks. He can't help the way his and Subaru's lips curl up helplessly. Beaming…. Entirely lovesick.

Sunlight brushes upon the diamond in the center, creating a beautiful prism of color. Surrounding the ring displayed gems of ruby, sapphire, amethyst, and emerald, which were embedded amongst the golden band.

The manner in which Kamui held out his hand so very proudly, made Subaru gush. His smile widened across his cheeks, eyes turning dreamy… drowning in a euphoric sense of love.

"We're engaged," Subaru murmured, so soft and sweetly, his eyes never leaving Kamui for a second. It had been more a private admission than anything, simply loving the sound of those words, telling them to his beloved.

Words weren't needed, but… hearing Subaru says the words so sweetly, made Kamui melt. Flustered, he hides his face in his lover's coat. It felt even more real, sharing their happiness and joy with the friends that loved them.

"Oh my goodness, if I didn't already know how crazy he was over you… this ring alone would say it all…" Karen exclaims examining the beautiful and quite extravagant ring. Perfectly crafted.

"Subaru has him as well…" Kamui reached for Subaru's left hand, smiling at the golden band with a rainbow of gemstones.

"Congratulations," Aoki spoke so kindly, patting Subaru and Kamui on the back. "I am happy for you both."

"Yes, congratulations, both of you on this…" Arashi bowed her head murmuring the words a bit awkwardly.

Nokoru hearing the former seal's celebration could no longer keep silent. "Congratulations! This only shows further proof of your undying love!" He expresses with a hand to his chest, acting dramatically. "This is wonderful news!." Cheekily he smiles, grasping a fan from his pocket, the words "I knew it" painted on the front.

"I always knew you two would come together like this!" Nokoru beams, his sky blue eyes glistening.

"I am happy as well for you both…I'm sure Nagisa would feel the same. " Suoh quietly gave his words or praise, referring to his precious person sweetly. He glances at the pair, lost in one another. . "You two really suit one another."

"If you need any tips on wedding cakes, I'll be more than happy to help~" Akira chimed in with his innocent and upbeat smile.

"This is amazing! Are you going to plan a wedding in Tokyo?" Yuzuriha excitedly chimes in. She takes her turn to gaze to sit by and admire the pair's beautiful rings

"If you do, you are welcome to have your wedding on campus. Whatever the style you prefer I'll make sure it's arranged." Nokoru offered, always showing such generosity.

"Ah…" Kamui scratched his burning cheeks. Subaru was fairing no better.

"We haven't planned that far ahead…" Kamui admits to this. And besides… there was still Subaru's family to talk to.

"But we'll get there," Subaru assures, looking only into soft violet-blue eyes. He proceeds, linking Kamui's hand within his own. And For right now… they had a pleasant afternoon to celebrate.

Sumeragi

Their first trip to Kyoto, now engaged, had approached. Approval for Kamui to be with Subaru has been given upon meeting him. There wasn't anyone in the clan, by now, who wasn't aware of their leaders' newfound happiness.

And of course…there would be both Subaru's grandmother and his formerly distanced, parents who showed the most support. They were invited over, to share the good news.

"Hey…" Subaru squeezes Kamui's hand assuringly. "Don't be nervous, they love you." It's almost laughable at this point how direct his family had been with bringing Kamui in. If anything they'd be upset the two hadn't given this announcement much earlier.

"It's just…" Kamui purses his lips ducking, his head. There just are little things, like the way the clan members bow their heads upon meeting 'Master' Sumeragi. Subaru's world had been so different from his own. "You're incredible, you have so much strength to lead, such prestige… I'll be marrying the top Onmyouji in all of Japan and my background is…"

"That's an image…Trust me you are far more wonderful," Subaru stops him there with a finger to his lover's lips. "Your past takes nothing away, nor defines the person you are… the person I fell in love with… my precious angel."

The light that brought Subaru out of what could have been an eternity of ruminating in despair. Still, Kamui is a little worried.

"All you've given me. Even looking at - titles and prestige. You have more than enough of that…" Subaru is quick to stop himself before elaborating, being the true 'Kamui' didn't bring the most pleasant feelings.

He chooses his words carefully, "After all you've given the world, all you've given …" He pauses, stopping them in their walk. Turning in front of Kamui he grasps both hands. "Your value…it's immeasurable, you just are amazing, Kamui. My family adores you as they can see that in you as well."

"I guess but…" Kamui bites on his lip feeling a hand under his chin lifting him up. "Still I'm nervous.." Meeting his fiance's gaze, he stands on his tiptoes, their lips brushing.

"I think they are expecting this…" Subaru admits, lightening the air around them.

"That's true…" Kamui had heard the concept of ceremonies and matrimony more than once over the years together.

"I know countless of those in the Sumeragi clan who have been planning on a 'special ceremony' for a while now."

"I can imagine…" Kamui scratches his cheek, biting his lip slightly.

"'Come with me?" Subaru offers, voice adoring and enchanting like a fairytale prince asking to whisk Kamui away. To Kamui…it certainly didn't feel too far off.

"Of course." Kamui enters side by side with his lover. The traditional temple-style home approaches.

A familiar, young assistant to the clan opens the door. "We are so happy to see you both," She practically sings the words, this kind of meeting… an announcement… Certainly, she could put two and two together. "Everyone is in the back garden." She explains leading them down the hall.

Subarus' close relatives turn back to see the wooden door slide open. All eyes fall on the couple, seeming expectant and entirely joyous. The mood lifts there, nerves dissolving already.

"I'm glad to see you both are well," Lady Sumeragi speaks up, first and approaches the fair. For all the intensity she often displayed, she still could hold the most gentle expression, when it came to her precious family. "Come join us,"

She gestures towards a large table. Several tea cups spread around. The family attendant happily turned on her heel, "I'll make a fresh batch of tea, are you both fine with milk tea?"

"Yes," Kamui answers for himself and his partner. Nerves were settling in… maybe the tea could calm things down.

"Grandmother, mother, father," Subaru greets his family one at a time, bowing his head politely. "I'm happy to see you… and…thankful you all could meet today."

"We're so happy to see you two as well~" Subaru's mother grins, a manner so similar to Hokuto. She clasps her hands together and gives a tender look toward the couple. "It's so nice to see you both here," Subaru's father gives a similar sentiment, nodding his head.

"Sorry it took so long," Cheerily, the Sumeragi attendant slid open the doors, carrying a tray holding a steaming teapot. She begins filling the various floral cups with fresh tea before taking her to leave.

Bouts of silence and simple conversations emerge here and there… but there's a clear topic everyone became curious about.

"You may be wondering why I planned this visit, quite suddenly…."Subaru had to take a breath, nerves seeming to finally kick in. This was the moment.

"Subaru…" Kamui whispers, clasping his hand so tightly, pulling it to his lap. This was their moment.

The moment touches Subaru…drowning out his nerves with the sheer sense of pure bliss. He would have the privilege of marrying the beautiful man beside him.

"Kamui and I are," Taking deep breaths, he could do this. "Recently I proposed to Kamui and he said yes…" Subaru expresses, eyes lighting up with stars, admitting the latter words. He never thought the word, just three letters could ever make him feel so overwhelmed with joy.

Holding out Kamui's left hand within his own he announces, proudly. "We are engaged."

Tears were streaming down his parents' cheeks nearly instantaneous to the announcement. Even the Lady Sumeragi, as composed as she was, seemed to be welling with emotion.

"Oh my…." Subaru's mother seemed overcome, stepping up and out of her seat. She rushes up and around the table, giving her son a hug. "That's wonderful news…"

His father was no less emotional. He exchanged partial hugs and shook hands with the newly engaged couple. "We couldn't be more thrilled for you both."

"You've brought such joy to our Subaru's life…. You must know you're already family to us Kamui…. So.. Thank you…" Being brought into a powerful, nurturing embrace made violet eyes shiver.

"Oh…Subaru is incredible, I'm thankful to become such a part of his life," Kamui was blessed beyond belief. He had Subaru… they could be in love, be together. In addition, To that overwhelming happiness… he couldn't help but feel it. He was gaining a family.

A feeling that went beyond words… after such a long time experiencing loneliness. The sensation is indescribable, Kamui smiles, awkwardly returning the hug, still not used to this… but maybe this could be a good change.

Subaru's grandmother remained quiet, allowing the parents to give their support first. She contently waited her turn.

Lady Sumeragi breathed out a pleasant little sigh. Her gaze focused on the couple as she maneuvered over, witnessing the matching rings as proof of their engagement.

"It's been quite some time. I knew this day would come and I am happy for both to finally come together like this…"

"Ah, thank you…?" Subaru returns politely albeit confused at the tone used. To be fair, she did predict this much… and likely expected them to have a ceremony some time ago… per tradition. Yet still.

"May you both have a lifetime together of happiness," She begins more vulnerable and sentimental. "Kamui please, I ask you to continue to care for Subaru, and Subaru you must do the same."

"Of course!" Kamui and Subaru responded at the same time, sharing soft bouts of laughter and becoming lost in one another.

"There is one thing…" Her eyes steeled with a certain firmness. Tension filled the room at how serious her tone came out.

"Yes, grandmother?"

"Of course, as the Sumeragi leader, it is an upheld tradition and expected of you to have an official ceremony here…" Lady Sumeragi mentions as though it were already a done deal. The honor and tradition this came with… it wouldn't be let go easily.

But Subaru and Kamui were too blissful at the approval. Happy to be together however they went along.

"I don't mind it… it's beautiful here." Kamui whispers to his lover fondly.

"We will greatly, keep this in mind," Subaru assures this much but wants nothing more than Kamui's happiness. They had time to find out what would work best, on their special day together…become husbands…

A word Subaru never thought he'd be able to call himself nor the one he loved…yet he made it.

Thankfully, his grandmother seemed pleased enough with that true consideration.

The moment afterward felt so light, celebratory.

Finally, Subaru's loved ones could see him reach this day, knowing he would soon be walking down the aisle with the person who brought his light back.

Truly Happiness

Wintertime sprinkled in what seemed like the blink of an eye. Snowflakes trickled down to set up for the arising holiday season.

Subaru and Kamui ventured out to the city, window shopping and looking towards the massive, decorative tree lit up in the shopping center.

They certainly passed by dozens of sweet couples.

'Perhaps, it would have been a better time to propose during the holiday…' He considers the idea.

Yet, while holding tightly to Kamui's hand, he notices the shimmer, the thin couple's ring and engagement, melded together beautifully into one. Memories of their anniversary and recent engagement surfaced in his heart's eye.

No, their engagement was perfect just as it happened…because it was theirs.

The evening continued to draw out colder weather, leaving many to retreat or return indoors to the mall.

Even while Subaru gave and wrapped up his beloved in his coat, he could see Kamui still shivering. Swiftly, he followed the route that would bring them home sonnet.

"Thank you," Kamui says abashedly, feeling an arm snuggly wrapped around his waist. being pulled in he cuddles up to his fiancé's side.

Returning home, they warmed up, taking blankets out to their couch, and cuddling up. Their cat happily joined in and stole her spot on the pillow beside them.

With Christmas fast approaching, Kamui brought in his homemade Christmas cake. A tradition built up from their first Christmas together as a couple.

Subaru gave such a modest request for a present. Meanwhile, Kamui took on the challenge to make a new and more exciting holiday cake each year. Happily, he accepted his beloved's help in the cleaning process.

Now, they were cuddled, sharing a single slice of strawberry cake. Make that a 'test' Christmas cake, before the real gift would be given on Christmas eve.

"I think it's so wonderful as is…" Subaru praises, parting his lips, whilst his beloved places a cake-filled fork upon them.

With no shame in sharing at this point, Kamui takes that same utensil to try for himself.

"Maybe… but I want to make it the best I can for you," Kamui blushes a soft pink, pressing his lips together.

"You always do," Subaru assures, securing an arm around Kamui's form and tugging him in close. Sighing in contentment.

"And I can use the practice," Kamui offers.

"You don't need to push yourself…"

"I know I'm just helping Akira Ijyuin and his top students with baking it but I want our wedding cake to be perfect…" Kamui bites his lip, his main goal being…"For you…" He loved the idea of playing a part in personally designing and aiding in all he would for their wedding day.

"I know I'll love everything you make," Subaru provides, kissing his beloved's temples tenderly.

"But still…" Kamui begins, lips curving to a frown.

"We have until June," Subaru assures.

"It doesn't feel like enough time…" Kamui lightly mumbles.

"It will be perfect," Subaru returns dreamily. "It's our day after all…"

Kamui leans up to kiss his lover tenderly. "There's already so much being set up in Kyoto…" The Sumeragi clan works together eagerly to provide a beautiful and traditional wedding for their esteemed leader. "So I want to do this much…"

Their official ceremony would be upon the Sumeragi estate, but with a celebration party at CLAMP school.

"You'll be perfect," Subaru deals his lips over Kamui's own. He rests their foreheads together. "So perfect, I almost can't wait. Hm, maybe we should run away together?"

"Subaru…." Kamui murmurs, eyes closing and falling into the moment. He nuzzles his lover's neck, breathing in his calming scent. At least until he hears a bemused yet incredibly fond.

"But I supposed then you wouldn't be...My beautiful June bride~" Subaru teases gently, eyes laced and drowning with such affection. This action learned a very light nudge to his shoulder.

"Subaru ~" Kamui huffs, lips curving up to a pout. He grumbles about the moment being ruined. He knows all too well how that story slipped. He ended up talking with Subaru about his early years… naivety as a child, spending time with Fuuma, and Kotori wanting to be a bride…There was no way he'd think of the something now, or wearing those princess-style dresses,...only in absolute privacy, for Subarus eyes only.

"Perhaps because…." Subaru begins, tapping a finger to his chin, as though contemplating. "We do end up telling each other everything…."

With such pure sincerity, slipping from his voice Kamui felt the pout melting off his face.

"That's because I love you…"

"I love you too…"

Their profession of love became eagerly followed by a series of sweet, lingering kisses.

Maybe there was no one path that would allow everyone to be happy. To be truly happy they would walk the road, ensuring Kamui and Subaru could live a life of happiness together and, at long last.

"Kamui…."

"Hm?"

"You make me incredibly happy," Subaru confesses the words with an endearing tone and such amorous eyes. "I can't wait to marry you…"

"I…." Kamui breathes, before feeling his world turn at such honesty. He connects their lips in lieu of a response, certain Subaru would understand their words. 'Feel the same. '

Perhaps the paths to their happiness had aligned long ago. Bound by fate, souls connected. To find true happiness….

I was hesitant to add in a little scene for their Okinawa stay. But I liked giving Kamui a little sense of closure in Kamui finding a few keepsake photos and a journal~ (I wish I thought of something earlier but well ended up being an epilogue idea…there is so much mystery to Kamui's life and family so maybe there was a reason he couldn't find those things right away…also I don't think Kamui could (understandable) bring himself to look back at his old home…the place likely being abandoned for some time. I left the journal-diary idea open-ended as I feel there are so many possibilities and likely a whole story that could come from Kamui's mother and her experiences before conceiving. I feel her love for Kamui and desire for him to choose happiness would be something pivotal~ Happiness and hope are key moments in this chapter, with so much despair in X too…Subaru and Kamui deserve the world.

Subaru and Kamui are rather introverted, and I see them as sharing their special moments in private. So their proposal was something so very intimate and between the two of them~ Subaru worked hard to convey his emotions into words, but whatever didn't seem enough in words could be included through touch, proposing in the privacy of their room~ Of course, everyone is quite happy and pleased with these two being engaged~ A whole marriage ceremony/planning I feel could be a whole other story, I can't quite decide on how it would go. I feel tradition within the Sumeragi clan to have a formal ceremony (especially for the leaders), but I could also see Kamui and Subaru being a desire to just elope… I hope you enjoyed this story and have a wonderful rest of your day!

All the likes, comments, and views make me incredibly happy, as I've written this overly long 'love letter' to the X/SubKam fandom. They are so dear to my heart and I hope to have more one-shots or maybe update a new story collection of one-shots I'll update now and again so I will be writing SubKam even with this story completed.

Ending a story that's been in my life for so long holds such bittersweet memories. But I am so happy to have written and completed a story much longer than anything I've written before, and about one of my favorite couples. Thank you all so very much!
