I do not own Danny Phantom or Extreme Ghostbusters. Those are owned by their individual companies. This is a sequel to Unclogged Graves.
Danny could not believe how philosophically different the Ghostbusters were regarding ghosts and spirits. While his parents had a shoot-first-and-dissect-what-you-can attitude, Prof. Spengler took a more scientific approach to study and fighting the ectoplasmic beings. Though granted, he still studied any ectoplasmic samples he had.
All this was learned as the ghost boy watched as the resident ghost, Slimer, would fly around doing mud and tasks like eating and generally hanging around the people inside. This annoyed the Extreme Ghostbusters, with Garrett threatening the slimy ghosts if any of his food was eaten, particularly the candy bars he always had on hand.
Egon and Janine acted kinder to the spirit, with the latter sometimes acting motherly. The scientist would study any slime left behind but treat Slimer like a friend.
Danny was slouching on the couch, trying to wake up after last night. While he was no stranger to ghost attacks at night, neither were the Ghostbusters. They had calls coming in till midnight. The one good thing about the ghost boy's ghost sense was that it was silent.
And the siren.
"You gotta admit, that siren was loud, but it sounds...iconic, if you ask me," Jazz said, sitting next to her brother. She glanced at the boy, seeing him doze off. A quick pat on the shoulder fixed that. "Scared they might detect Danny Phantom?"
"Hard to say," Danny said, glancing at Slimer, who was in the kitchen rummaging around. The green blob seemed intent on scarfing down everything edible, except for the green vegetables, ironically. It was amusing to watch as he phased through the floor, leaving slime trails. "I think the actual ghost would set any of the PKE meters off."
"Wow, I can't believe you memorized PKE," Jazz teased, getting up and going to the window. She looked outside and marveled at the streets of New York. No one person looked the same as they walked by. This city definitely had more variety and entertainment than Amity Park, a fact the girl wanted to explore.
"Alright, kids, time for a lecture," Janine said, walking over to the two. She adjusted her glasses before gesturing for the siblings to follow. "I know you two are the only ones, but we still have stuff for you to do. Now, Egon is going to show you around while explains how everything works."
The teens blinked as they went downstairs to the entrance from yesterday. After the events of yesterday's introduction, they had forgotten that they were here to learn.
Danny was particularly invested, more about hearing facts that didn't have the words catch, dissect, or tear apart molecule by molecule in them. But a part of the ghost boy was concerned about the radar equipment scattered around the firehouse. While most of it seemed like antiques, his muscles tensed in guarding fear, wondering if any of the equipment could detect his powers. If there was any silver lining, it was that said abilities were camouflaged in human form.
Sitting down on nearby chairs, the Fenton siblings were seated next to Egon at his desk. It was a part of the entrance designed for work, stationed behind Janine's section. They watched as the man dusted off his computer before turning it on and bringing out some books.
"Sorry about the mess. To be honest, I still had doubts anyone was coming," Egon said, opening one of the books.
Jazz opened a notebook, enthusiastically taking notes before Egon started lecturing. Danny smirked, knowing his sister's excitement was getting the better of her as he sat down, resting his head on a hand. While he was glad to be out of school and away from Dash and every horror high school had to offer, he wondered if it was the best idea. His father had given many lectures about ghost hunting, but he always found it boring.
And from the way Egon spoke, it could probably be like another lullaby to him.
"Now then, let's start with Halloween and the heightened incidents of ectoplasmic invasions, possessions, and other supernatural phenomenon. now while we celebrate Halloween and dress up, At this time of year, ecto events occur have always occurred more frequently." Egon went to a chalkboard, much to the surprise of the teens. Who uses chalk anymore? "Through our history, stories of dirties and laughter their beings worshipped with a sacrifice have appeared. Given ectoplasm's adaptable and Marlee able element, it could be presumed that some being scan posses an ability to phase through different existential frequencies allowing them to—"
Danny was shocked to hear this. Not the information, but that he basically signed up for a college-level lecture. Part of him wished to be back home, not sure he could handle this class. But a glare from his sister told him to take things seriously as the others came down.
Eduardo passed the turn sitting down with a magazine as Roland took the time to inspect the Ecto-1. The mechanic was quiet as he did a quick once over of the engine before closing the hood and wiping the vehicle's chassis, making sure it shined with cleanliness.
Kylie sat next to them, much to Danny's surprise. He gave a passing glance as he saw the goth girl staring intently at Egon and the lecture. It was like she was processing everything he was saying and understanding it. Danny was surprised, seeing how she seemed only a few years older than him. While he may have come from a small town, in comparison, he never knew someone to be so studious. He decided to ignore her as he went back to the lecture.
"—and so, I suspect that it is at this period in the year that gateways into the ghost world appear, causing spikes in ectoplasmic energy and spectral phenomena."
"Ghost Zone." Jazz was abrupt.
"I'm sorry, what?" Egon stared at the orange-haired teen.
"Ghost Zone or that's what our parents call it," Danny clarified before muttering. "Not to mention the ghosts do too."
"Hmmm. Ghost Zone...I like it," Egon commented.
"That's probably one thing we can agree with the Fenton's," Garrett snarked quietly. Or not as silent as he thought, seeing Jazz glaring at him. The boy was not fazed as he just wheeled himself to the kitchen for a snack, providing Slimer didn't eat it. He was unaffected by the glare from Jazz as he stared back with a smirk. "Hey, if you want a photo, all you had to do was ask," he snarked.
Jazz gave a huff before walking away as Garrett chuckled. While the stubborn girl would get back at the boy, she'd deal with that later. She glanced at Slimer, who stared in hunger at the boy's snack and smiled wickedly.
The phone rang at the desk, echoing throughout the room as Janine walked over and answered with "Ghostbusters, we're ready to believe you."
As Janine spoke on the phone, everyone was quiet, writing on a notepad. The only noise was the sound of Garrett slowly chewing on his food. The phone was hung up as the secretary turned to everyone. "Something is happening at Times Square. It seems the billboard screens are coming to life."
"Sounds like a challenge." Garrett rubbed his hands together in anticipation.
"Sounds more like 3-D advertisement," Eduardo snarked.
"Whatever it is, let's suit up." Kylie ran over to the locker and put on her body armor. The rest of the team followed her cue as they got dressed, geared, and drove off in the Ecto-1.
Jazz and Danny watched with some awe as the group went off. The elder sister blinked a bit before going back to the lecture and studies.
But curiosity got the better of Danny. As the Extreme Ghostbusters left for another call, the ghost boy decided to follow, going under the excuse that he wanted to see New York City. While Egon saw no reason to deny the boy, Janine took a stricter role and told the boy to call if he got lost.
Nodding, Danny walked out of the firehouse and a couple blocks away before going into an alleyway. He hid behind a dumpster before transforming into Phantom and flying off, seeing no one around.
Unaware to him, a small green ghost was floating around the alley, scratching his head as he looked around for the next few hours.
"Egon, how could you let Danny walk out on his own?" Janine scolded, pushing the scientist back and away from his studies.
Despite the angry woman, Egon showed no retaliating behavior. He adjusted his glasses and stared at Janine. This seemed more of one of those disagreements that could come and go within seconds to him.
"Now, Janine, Danny will be perfectly fine in his own. Everybody walks around New York," Egon explained. He went around Janine and back to his studies.
"But not everyone knows New York. Who knows what Danny could get himself into." The woman sighed before walking away. "Which is why I had Slimer following him," she said, stopping at the door.
Before Janine could leave the room, the PKE monitors went off, beeping at a high rate as the two walked over. Egon was stern as he checked out the equipment, walking over to the phone with a scowl.
"These readings are among the highest I've ever seen. We must tell the others," Egon said.
Janine nodded, bringing out her cellphone. If there was one thing she was grateful for, the advances made in technology. Even when the gang left only seconds ago.
"Danny, what are you doing?" Jazz muttered to herself. She could tell her brother had gone ghost, flying around the city. While that made him safe from the natural dangers of New York, he still had to deal with the supernatural.
The sister could stare out the window and hope her brother would be safe. He didn't need more trouble, though part of her believed the Extreme Ghostbusters would ask first, then shoot maybe.
New York was unique from the sky. Everyone minded their own business, so nobody cared to check if a flying ghost boy was in the air. A blessing this was, but that was barely any of the ghost boy's concern. Listening for the siren, Danny caught up with the Ecto-1, going invisible as he came closer.
"Hmmm..." Kylie fiddled with the PKE meter. "Well thats strange." She jumped out of the way as a ghoulish liking Ferrari sped past her.
The red car did a couple donuts before stopping. It faced the girl, reviving its engines with a ghastly roar as the hood opened up to reveal a mouth of jagged teeth, veiny gums, and three forked tongues. Fire came from its exhaust pipes as it revved again, charging forward with a ghostly cackle.
However, Kylie was onto its game already, blasting her proton blaster as Roland joined in. The vehicle was slowed down for the girl before being pushed again Ed the side.
"You alright?" Roland asked.
"Yeah, just lift him up and I'll spring the trap." Kylie got out the ghost trap on her back. The two began lifting their ghost as Garrett and Eduardo were busy with their specter.
"When you guys are done there, how about helping us wrangle the rest!?" Garrett yelled out. Though wheel-chaired, the boy's disability did nothing to impede his work, evident as he went circles around a rotting panda.
The black and white bear snarled as its Glasglow smile showed off its uneven, jagged teeth. Some were Elsa negating out of its gums as it lunged and snapped at Garrett.
"Nice try, sucker!" Garrett fired a proton beam, ensnaring and immobilizing the ghost. "This is the last time I order Chinese take out," he quipped.
But the entrapment was stopped as Eduardo bumped into him, letting go of the panda. The boys stumbled backwards and glared at each other.
"Hey watch it!" Garrett cried, getting himself up.
"How about you move!?" Eduardo pointed to a giant ghost lady. She looked normal in comparison with her black t-shirt and blue jeans. In fact, she looked pretty.
"Pfft! Like she's so tough."
The lady lunged forward as her face split into thirds, revealing a mixture of floating eyeballs, teeth, innards, and cable wires as a sonic scream was let loose, knocking the boys back into Kylie and Roland, releasing the Ferrari.
"Ok, I stand corrected."
Danny flew in closer. He wanted to help. These ghosts were grotesque and uglier than anything Danny had ever encountered. It looked more at home in a horror movie than some of his other foes. But they were still just as deadly, if not more so.
"Wow, and I thought Spectra as a booger monster was gross. Then again, there was Gutchern," Danny commented, shuddering at the last pet. He had expected more shapely ghost forms he had seen back home. Maybe he could ask Egon about this when he returned. For now, the ghost boy went to help, remaining invisible to not alert the ghostbusters.
However, in doing so, Danny had entered the radar of the PKE meters.
"Woah, looks like our class C's just upgraded to a class A's," Garrett said, taking out his PKE meter. The readings on the spectrometer went crazy as the graph line waved rapidly. "Guess he's been taking his vitamins," he said, taking out his particle thrower.
Unbeknownst to all, someone from the rooftops had been watching. He watched from a distance with keen eyes as the ghosts attacked.
"Everyone scatter!" Kylie commanded as the group jumped out of the way. The ghosts rammed each other and snarled. They turned their backs on each other,
But the Extreme Ghostbusters were ready with proton beams charged and aimed.
"Ready?" Kylie cried.
"On three!" Eduardo said.
"Three!" the group spoke in unison as they fired, holding the specters in place as Kylie threw the trap and activated it. A light beam came and pulled the ghost into the container, sealing it shut with a snap.
"And once again, Time Square is safe for tourists to flock and buy authentic New York souvenirs," Garrett snarked as Kylie picked up the trap.
"Tch, you'd think the mayor would be grateful for this kind of help," Eduardo added with an equally snarky tone.
"Knock it off." Kylie brought the trap to the Ecto-1. She opened the back and placed it in a compartment, ready to be transported.
"Uh guy?" Roland held out a PKE meter. "If we caught the ghost, why do the scanners still pick up a class A ghost?"
Everyone got out their scanners, seeing that they were still active. The ghostbusters moved them around, tracing the signal back to Danny, who stepped back as he saw the group handle things independently.
The ghost boy gasped, turning around to fly away. But as he reached the sky, his neck was gripped tightly. He flailed in the air as he tried to pry the hand off. His squinted eyes opened slowly as he saw his captor.
"You!?" Danny cried. He glowed his fists but found his throat gripped tighter. His focus was back on getting out of the suffocating grip, but it was impossible to phase through. The ghost brought them through the rooftop, past the building and street, and below the ground.
As the two phased through the ground, a pair of ghostly goblins saw the whole thing. Their gruesome faces twisted with joy as they jumped up and down, guffawing as they flew away.
The PKE readings spoke as the lights flashed crazily. Roland started fiddling with his as the others stared in concern.
"Did the PKE meters just jump higher than the Empire State Building?" Eduardo asked in concern. He glanced at his fellow ghostbusters, who were looking around.
This was the first time the meters acted manically. And while the disorderly high ectoplasmic readings were not something to laugh at, the team searched for an answer.
"It's coming from below!" Roland cried out.
"Let's let's hit the subway!" Kylie pointed to the entrance as the extreme ghostbusters ran downtown the stairs.
And the Extreme Ghostbusters still got game. Even if Danny has ghost powers when you have ghost troubles, who ya gonna call?
Anyway, glad to have this chapter out. Next time we get to see our ghost from the beginning and maybe some lore that got me so interested in writing this fic
Special Thanks! to Jay The Average Fanboy for all his help!
Reviews:
RonaldM40196867: Given the more ghoulish looks from the series, the details will be more horrifying in comparison. Inspiration was taken from the movies and tv series, but I had this random thought and it just gave me a too much of a kick to ignore for this fic.
doctor3027: Given the science I'm using, and doing my best with, that maybe iffy. I say maybe cause I don't have everything down yet.
Luiz4200: Yep.
Jay The Average Fanboy: In order: Maybe. Still working on that. I can make a reference. Yes, in time. Most likely. Yes. Original. No. Maybe.
danifan3000: I'll have to look into that. Though Ghost Force won't be making any appearances due to conflicting natures in ghosts.
Mazamba: There's a reason why they won't.
Andrew Kynder Adams: Thanks. Kylie is only a few years older than Danny. Not all the ghostbusters are in New York.
Soggy Fysher Woods: Thanks! Egon wasn't teaching back then. I have something in mind for Eduardo's line. Nothing negative though, just humor.
Ironchef13(Guest): After. No.
