This is my second published Mcrollins fanfic! Please let me know how I can improve it and if you like it! FYI: I started writing this before the finale. REMEMBER I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THESE CHARACTERS!
Thank you so much for all the comments and follows for this story. They motivate me to continue writing more frequently. I already pre wrote some of the next chapters, I just need to edit them a bit. Please be patient with me as I am a full-time student.
Chapter 2
After a 6 hour flight, they landed in Honolulu.
"Wow mom the island is so pretty."
"It looks the best from above. Grab your bags Caroline, we need to head to baggage claim to get the suitcase."
They got their bag from baggage claim and headed to the car rental and rented a car.
"Wow, I can't believe they still have this kind of car. This is the same model as the car I had when I was here all those years ago. It's even the same blue."
"I guess the islands are really calling you mom."
"Caroline, before we go to the resort, I need to stop by somewhere to visit a friend."
"Who?"
"Uh, Steve's son, John is the one who called me yesterday. Steve is in the hospital again."
"What do you mean again?"
"Well as Danny always said, he's a danger magnet. He got shot at work. He's the head of the task force still."
"Doesn't he worry about his health?"
"That's why John called me I guess, he wanted to make right for his dad because he knew Steve would never put his pride aside."
"How do you know where Steve is?"
"After he called he sent me texts through his phone. After we landed I asked him what hospital and the room number."
"I understand why you need to visit him mom. You're very caring."
"I'm sorry, the first thing we are doing is going to the hospital. After the visit, we are going to go to the resort, then we can relax and swim."
"I love you so much mom."
Catherine drove to King's Medical Center and parked in the parking garage.
"Wow mom, you can see the ocean from the highway, it's so beautiful."
"Just wait until we go to the resort."
They walked through the lobby of the hospital and headed toward Steve's room. Catherine could see that his door was closed. She peaked through the window on the door and John spotted her.
"Dad I'll be right back."
John opened the door and closed it behind him.
"Hi John, I'm Catherine and this is my daughter Caroline."
"Hi Caroline, I'm sorry I had to ruin your birthday trip."
"It's nice to meet you John, don't worry, you didn't ruin anything. Mom I'll wait out here so you can talk to him."
"I can wait with you out here with you, Caroline. How about we go to the waiting room so we can sit and chat I guess."
"Sounds good with me. Thank you for your kindness John."
Catherine opened the door, but didn't walk in right away.
"John?"
Catherine walked in slowly and leaned against the door frame.
"Hey sailor."
"Catherine."
"I guess I could've called you. I just didn't know what to say so I just figured if I just came in person then it would just be..."
Steve wanted to get up to hug her, but he was stuck to the iv machine.
"Steve, don't try to get up."
"I missed you, Cath."
Catherine walked toward the chair next to his bed and reached out for his hand. Steve held her hand and kissed it.
"I missed you too, sailor."
They stared into each other's eyes for a while. The silence between them spoke a thousand words.
Meanwhile…
John and Caroline sat next to each other and it was very awkward. There was a long period of silence between them.
"Hey Caroline, how old are you going to be since this is your birthday trip."
"I'm turning 16 in two days."
"I guess happy sweet 16!"
"Thanks John. How old are you?"
"I'm actually turning 17 in two months."
"So you're a junior right?"
"Yea, you're a sophomore right?"
"Yea, I think it's cool how we are so close in age. You can teach me things I never got to do in Coronado."
"I would love to teach you, do you have your driver's permit yet?"
"Not yet, my mom actually doesn't have much time to teach me and my dad, he's in the military with his own family, so no one can teach me."
"Well, I'm sure my dad would love to teach you, he taught me how. Although, I believe I'm a way better driver than he is."
John and Caroline laughed at his comment.
"Hey Caroline, just out of curiosity, what happened to your dad? You don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to. I can tell you my story, if you want to hear it."
"I can tell you about it, I would also love to hear yours. Well as you know our parents have loved each other for a very long time. But my mom left your dad to work for the CIA. My mom hung out with a lot of her navy friends whenever she could. One of her best friends, Sydney has an older brother who is in the army. My dad was an army lieutenant, I'm not sure if he got promoted or retired. Sydney wanted to set my mom up with him. My mom tried to avoid getting together with anyone, but she eventually gave in. They dated for a couple of years and eventually got married. When my mom got pregnant with me she decided to quit the CIA and find a more permanent job. My mom always wanted to have more than one child, she found out she was pregnant the day my aunt Sydney called her to say that my dad cheated on their other friend, Kara. My mom kept it a secret from everyone, but me. When she was about 3 months pregnant, she had a miscarriage. A couple days after that, aunt Sydney called and said that aunt Kara is pregnant, but the father of that baby was my dad. My mom was already having the guilt of not being able to carry more children and the fact that my dad cheated and got someone else pregnant made her very depressed. I knew there was something wrong, although I was very young. My dad was in a foreign country while all of this was happening, but when he came home a couple of months later, the first thing my mom did was hand him the divorce papers. He didn't understand at first so my mom had him call aunt Kara. She was 8 months pregnant at the time, although it was my dad's baby, my mom was very supportive of her and helped her throughout the months. My mom was willing to split custody of me, my dad agreed, later that week he moved into aunt Kara's house and my parents got divorced. Apparently my dad and Kara used to be neighbors and were lovers, but my dad moved away and they broke up. So I guess that affair had brought them back together since my dad was already married to my mom and had me when she came back into his life. My parents fell out of love, I knew my parents never really loved each other. After my baby half brother was born, my dad married her. In fact I haven't seen my dad or my other siblings in a while. The last time I saw them was Christmas 5 years ago. Thinking about it now, I guess I kinda miss my dad being around and seeing my aunties."
"I'm sorry to hear that Caroline, I guess you can say we are in the same boat. Maybe one day in the near future you should try to call your dad, I'm sure he misses you. Maybe you could even see your aunties and siblings."
"What's your story John?"
"Well like your dad, my mom cheated on my dad a couple of times with this guy. He was my mom's best friend for many years, he was like a family friend. One day, out of the blue, my mom left the divorce papers on the table and a note. My mom basically abandoned our family. My dad signed them to make her happy. Later, we found out that she was pregnant and getting married to her best friend. My mom moved back to the mainland and my mom had me stay in Hawaii with my dad. I was 10 at the time. A couple of years went by and I could tell my dad was getting worse, with his pride and everything taking over, he sent me to live with my mom and her new family. My step father was nice, but he didn't really care for me anymore because he had his own children with my mom. I missed my dad a lot and worried about him. 2 years later I ran away, got on a plane, and moved back here. My mom and step dad didn't really look for me after I ran away. Ever since I've been trying to take care of dad and make sure he doesn't hurt himself anymore."
"You're a very sweet boy John, I can't believe your mom did that."
"Yea, actually my dad was surprised the day I walked into his office at the palace. He called my mom, but of course she didn't seem to care."
"I'm sorry to hear that John."
"It's okay, after that traumatic event, I never wanted to see my mom or her new family again. I don't really think about them that much anymore."
"You're very brave John, I admire that in you. I'm sorry you had to endure such traumatic events in your life."
"I'm glad we were able to talk Caroline, I'm sorry about your dad."
"Me too, John, I appreciate this opportunity."
Back in Steve's hospital room.
Steve finally broke the silence between them.
"How did you know I was here?"
"John, uh actually called me."
"Of course he did, that silly boy. I'm sorry for dragging you here."
"Steve don't say that. He actually called me right before we got on a plane to here."
"Who's we?"
"I planned a trip here for my daughter's sweet 16th birthday. She's actually in the waiting room talking to your son right now."
"Now I feel even more bad, Cath."
"Don't be like that Steve, it's okay, my daughter understood why we had to come here. Your son is such a gentleman, he already apologized for the inconvenience, but it really wasn't."
"When did you get in?"
"About two hours ago."
"So you didn't even go to wherever you were supposed to go?"
"It's okay Steve, we are here for a week."
There was a knock on the door. The door opened and the man stopped dead in his tracks. He was holding a tray of coffee.
"Hey buddy."
Who walked into the room?
Is Caroline and John going to become good friends?
