Arriving in Seattle it's cold and wet. We arrive at my Uncles place. "Serena! Hi." My Auntie Lynn greets. "And this must be Colby, lovely to meet you."
"You too." Colby smiles.
"Come in, please."
We follow her into the lounge room, where we find my uncle. "Uncle Allan." I greet and hug him tightly.
"Hey kiddo." He smiles. "This must be Colby?"
"Correct." Colby answers. "Lovely to meet you."
"You too, I don't think I've ever seen this one so happy." he addresses. "You've already been approved in this family."
He chuckles. "I'm glad. I'm planning on sticking around for a while."
I blush and smile up at him. "Why don't you two put your stuff down and we can chat?" Allan suggests.
Today is the day of my trial. Today I get to finally tell my side of the story and put Adam away for good. I'll no longer have to live in fear anymore. Colby, my mum and Nick, my Uncle and I arrive at the courthouse and we walk into the courtroom and I see everyone that I love here supporting me. My cousins, my friends, my bosses, my work colleagues, Phoebe even showed up. All these people flew in to support me, I'm so thankful.
I approach the table on my side of the room and Vince comes over with my lawyer. "How are you doing?" He asks.
"I'm good, ready for this to be over." I respond.
"It will, they will have no defence." My lawyer Alice reassures.
"What will most likely be there defence?"
"They are going to try and turn it into him having a mental issue, but there is no medical evidence to confirm that." She responds. "They might even try to ask you personal questions that aren't relevant to the case, just be truthful and yourself and everything will be fine."
I nod and take Colby's hand and he squeezes it and kisses my head. "I'll be right behind you." He whispers.
Everyone slowly takes there seats and the court room is now full. On the other side of the room is Adams family, who I haven't even dared to look at. About ten minutes later two guards enter the courtroom and bring in Adam in hand cuffs. I was told not to engage in any eye contact with him, so I turn to face Colby who's behind me and he mouths "love you."
I send him a small smile "love you too."
Minutes later the court bailiff arrives. "Please rise for Judge Erickson." He orders. We all rise and watch as a good looking man in his mid 30s walks in and approaches the bench and takes a seat behind it. The bailiff stands to the side and hands Judge Erickson the case file. "Case 415; Smith v Bright. Please be seated, the press have been brought in." He concludes and steps away.
Judge Erickson opens up the file and reads the case. He looks up from the file and glances over at me, then turns his attention to Adam. "Councillors approach the bench." Judge Erickson orders. Alice stands up as does Adams lawyer and they approach the bench. "Reading over the case, I'm going to give your client Mr Williams one chance to take the deal the prosecution have offered."
Mr Williams looks at him uneasy. "I have talked to my client and he stands on wanting this case to go ahead, my client is wanting the jury to hear this."
I turn to look at the jury and there are six people seated. Some are shaking their heads in amusement.
Judge Erickson looks at Mr Williams in shock. "Does your client, understand that if this goes to verdict and he loses he's going to jail for a longer period than offered."
"Yes, he does."
Erickson looks over at me and looks at the case again. "Well I hope for your clients sake, your defence is truthful. Be seated." Erickson finishes. "Prosecution you're starting statements."
Alice stands and I look up at her as she makes her way to the middle of the court room and stands in front of the jury and judge Erickson. "My client is here today to get her life back. She's a hard working wrestler that works for World Wrestling Entertainment where she travels all year round from city to city, country to county, putting on a show for her loving fans." Alice begins facing the jury. "As a wrestler in a organisation like WWE she is put on a platform where she is noticed. She goes out of her way to be there for her fans, but when she is off the clock that is when she can be herself. Serena Elizabeth Smith." Alice continues. "My client has worked her entire life to do what she loves, and half way through the year in 2013 the defendant with intent, pushed my client off a top rope making her fall to a concrete floor landing on her neck which caused her to break her neck and dislocate her shoulder." Alice announces. "She was out of action for nine months, nearly paralysed because of the defendants obsession with her. " Alice adds forcefully. "It took nearly a year of surgeries, therapy and training to get back to her dream, now I want you here today as the jury to find the defendant guilty; for stalking, for attempted murder, for injuring nearly paralysing my client and lastly breaking a restraining order on my client and put this man away, as he is a danger to my client." She finishes and walks back to the table and faces Judge Erickson. "Judge Erickson I will now like to call my first witness."
"Who?"
"My client, Serena Elisabeth Smith."
"Serena approach the bench please." Judge Erickson orders.
I slowly stand up from my seat and walk out in front of the jury and make my way to the seat next to Judge Erickson. The bailiff approaches the bench with a bible. "Miss Smith repeat this oath after me. 'I swear that the evidence that I shall give, shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God.'"
I place my hand on top of the bible. "I swear that the evidence that I shall give, shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God."
"Please be seated. " Judge Erickson encourages.
I sit down and look out at the court room avoiding the right side of the room. I turn and face Alice and focus on her as this is what she told me to do. Alice moves away from the table and approaches the bench. "Miss Smith, can you please tell the jury your story, the whole of it, as you have never been able to due to your recovery, this is your chance to explain to the jury, what it was like for you."
"Objection, she is supposed to be asking questions." Mr Williams objects.
Judge Erickson frowns and looks towards Alice. "Miss Federson an explanation please."
"My client has never had a chance to defend herself, she has never been given the chance to put the defendant away for what he did, my client lives in fear because of him. My client wants to finally be able to walk down the street by herself, she wants that man put away, the only reason he is out in the first place was because he never had a trial and somehow Miami jail ran out of room. My client wants this to go down in court so she can move on."
Judge Erickson thinks about it and nods. "Overruled." He disagrees. And turns to face me. "Please Miss Smith, take your time."
I send him a small smile and turn to face Alice. "Serena, please, tell your story." Alice urges.
"I was born here in Seattle on March 20th 1989 to William Keith Smith and Karen Elisabeth Smith. I'm an only childhood and was loved by two amazing parents." I begin.
"In your files it says that you lost your dad at a young age, can you tell us about that?"
"Objection, why are we asking about something that isn't about this case?" The defence objects.
"Judge Erickson, for the jury to understand what my client went through certain things happened in her life that made her where she is, this has important relevance." Alice assures.
"Overruled." Jude Erickson exclaims. "Defence if you are going to object find something worthy to object to, at this rate you don't have a case." Erickson warns and Mr Williams nods and sits back down and whispers something into Adams ear that I briefly notice but turn my attention away. "Miss Smith continue please."
"I lost my dad at a young age. At a time in a teenagers life where I needed him." I reply. "He was my best friend, my protector and at fourteen I lost him and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss him."
"After your father died, your life took a turn for the worst correct?"
"Yes, after he died my life changed. My mother was heart broken so she turned to alcohol to numb the pain."
"So your mother was a alcoholic?"
I turn to face my mum and she nods. "Yes she was. And thinking about it now, she was trying to live a life without her best friend and her protector."
"And what made you leave that environment?"
"I had enough. I was 16, I was starting high school, I was supposed to be living life like a normal teenager, but I wasn't." I explain. "I was caring for my mother and I snapped. I found her passed out and unconscious and I took her to the hospital, and I just couldn't take it anymore, so I left."
"And that's where your relationship with the defendant began."
"I wouldn't say relationship, but yes, that's when I came into contact with him."
"Judge Erickson, I would like to ask the witness some questions if I may?"
Judge Erickson turns to face Alice and me. "Prosecution will you allow it?"
I nod. "My client is an open book your honour, she will answer whatever question comes her way."
Alice takes a seat at her desk and Mr Williams approaches me. "Miss Smith going off what you just told us, your father passed away, your mother was an alcoholic and you had a troubled life, tell me did you ever seek help for your troubles?"
I turn to face Alice and she nods for me to answer. "No I didn't. I didn't know where to go." I answer.
"Surely, a teacher or a friend could have helped you."
"They could have, but I didn't know who to trust and honestly looking back on it, I'm glad I didn't, because what I went through I would never wish on my worst enemy, they didn't care about me, like they wouldn't of listened." I defend. "I had no one and at the time I was okay with that."
"It sounds like you still have a lot of issues to deal with."
"Objection, her issues are not on trial here."
"Mr Williams might I remind you, your defence has been terrible, you are stepping over the line and you know it."
"No further questions." He mumbles and walks back to his seat.
Alice stands back up. "Are you okay? Do you need a break." Alice asks me.
"I'm fine."
"When you first came into contact with Mr Bright what did you feel?"
"I guess what a normal sixteen year old girl feels, he was goodlooking, my best friends older brother, who wouldn't want the attention from that."
"So you had a crush?"
"No, I just thought he was attractive."
"When did your relationship with Mr Bright change?"
I look down and start shaking my hands nervously. "Are you okay Miss Smith?" Judge Erickson asks.
I turn to face him. "I've finally come to terms with what happened to me, as I've only really let myself believe it, it's just hard to talk about."
"Do you need a break?"
"No I'm fine."
"Then please answer."
I nod and take a breath. I glance at my loved ones and stare right at Colby and he encourages me to continue. "My relationship changed with Mr Bright when he raped me." I announce.
All of the jury and Adams side of the court room gasp in shock. "Objection your honour, there is no evidence."
"Judge Erickson, what my client just announced is something she has kept with herself for years." Alice defends. "She hid behind a lie due to not having anyone by her side. She was a 16 year old school drop out with an absent mother, who would have believed her?"
Judge erickson considers both statements. He then turns to face me. "Continue Miss Smith." He encourages.
I turn to face Adams family and they can't believe it. The one thing that Adam wasn't on trial for was alerted, they know now they are screwed. I turn back to face Judge Erickson. "What Alice said is true. I hid behind a lie due to not wanting to believe it myself." I explain. "I was 16, living with my best friend, I had no mother at that point and my life was turning upside down. No one would've believed me, so I decided to pretend like it never happened."
"What happened after that?" Alice asks.
"Word got around town about my reputation, meaning I knew what I was doing, but how could I have known what I was doing, I was a virgin." I enforce. "I was passed out, I could barely walk, I couldn't fight him, but you know what now I can." I say forcefully. "Now that I'm a public figure, I'm using my story to help others, so they don't have to go through what I went through."
I face my loved ones and they all have tears in their eyes. "When did you start getting your life together?" Alice asks.
"Just after I was kicked out of the Brights family home. They couldn't handle my drama so they sent an innocent sixteen year old girl out onto the street." I respond. "My friend to this very day helped me out. She helped me by providing a roof for me to sleep under, she got me a job and from that moment on, I worked on my dream."
"And that was?"
"To be a wrestler."
"And when did that dream finally come a reality?" Alice asks.
"Early January of last year. I got signed to the developmental system first, but I got the call up end at the end of March. Soon after my debut on the main roster I got pretty popular."
"So you became quite popular quickly?"
"Yes."
"And your other fans did they ever get to close or cross the boundaries?"
"No, they are always considerate." I respond. "They always ask for photos, they never demand them, all of them respect when I need a minute."
"But one?"
"But one, yes, about a month or so after I debuted I started receiving gifts from an unknown fan."
"Like what?" Alice asks.
"It started of with anonymous letters, then turned to flowers then lipsticks."
"And where did you receive those gifts?"
"At the arenas we were at, in my hotel rooms and even at my apartment."
"That didn't seem odd to you?"
"Not until they started coming to my apartment. Which is secured, but somehow they got to my front door."
"And that's when you alerted your bosses, Stephanie McMahon and Paul Levesque?"
"Yes, I notified them when I received another gift box with photos of myself." I confirm. "There was pictures of me on the streets, from my social media, before I was even in WWE, I then knew something was wrong, so I told them about everything and I discovered I had a stalker."
"When did you start getting freaked out?"
"Probably when I found the gifts at my apartment and receiving photos of myself. It honestly started to scare me, I was uncomfortable in my own bed, I didn't feel safe."
"Yet your a wrestler, can't you defend yourself?"
"I should be able to, but when your guard is down and you're scared and they know it, you're powerless." I respond. "I may act tough on screen, but behind that is a real person that has fears, and someone can easily over power me if they caught me off guard."
"When you finally found out that it was the defendant what changed?"
"All the memories I had from my teenage years came flooding back." I respond. "I was hiding behind a lie for so long, I almost wanted to believe it myself, but then he comes back into my life, when I was finally doing something for myself and bam he brings back all my fears, those horrible memories and it made me feel useless."
"On the case file it says that he is being charged for attempted murder, how did that come about?"
"I was here in Seattle, I had just finished Monday Night Raw and I was with my colleagues, Nicole and Briana Collace when I smelt gas in the car."
"You smelt gas?"
"Yes, car gas." I confirm. "I knew something was wrong and told the girls to get out of the car, and before I knew it we were running away and the car exploded."
"So you're saying that the defendant tried to kill you and your friends, so he was getting dangerous not to just you, but to your loved ones too?"
"Objection, no evidence has been found about my client doing that." Mr Williams objects.
"I actually have evidence." Alice alerts. We all turn to face her. "I knew that you would try to at least get out of that charge, so I did some investigating, and I found some interesting information on your client." Alice mentions. "The defendant coincidentally happens to be a car mechanic. He knows stuff about cars, not what to do, and what to do." She addresses. "Going off what my client is saying, the defendant was getting dangerous and sooner or later he was going to try and physically hurt my client." She continues. "He chose a moment when my client was with friends and had her guard down." She adds grabbing a remote that is aimed at a small flat screen. "I have a video of the defendant cutting the gas wire on the rental that my client was using."
Alice plays a video that shows Adam clear as day cutting a wire under the car and running away. Judge Erickson turns to Adam and shakes his head. "Just building more and more of a case against you Mr Bright."
"What else has the defendant sent you?" Alice asks me.
"He sent me live cockroaches a week before my first title defence. He was trying to physically and mentally hurt me."
"Why cockroaches?"
"They are one of my biggest phobias, and how would he know that? I was best friends with his sister."
"Talk us through when the defendant pushed you." Alice advises.
"I was in the middle of a championship match with Briana Collace, when I heard a commotion behind me. I turned my head and saw a figure jump the barricade and up onto the ring apron, and they pushed me off the top corner." I recall. "As soon as I saw his face I knew it was him. I was frozen in spot, it happened so quick I couldn't stop myself from falling."
"And you broke your neck and shoulder right?"
"I broke my neck and dislocated my shoulder." I confirm. "I had to have a neck surgery and a shoulder surgery to repair everything. I then had to attend rehab for seven months."
"When did you make your return?"
"Late February of this year."
"And did you have any worries that you would not wrestle again?"
"Yes, the doctors were constantly telling me how lucky I was to be walking, yet training."
"What are you hoping to achieve by being on trial, reliving all these horrible memories?" Alice asks.
"I want him out of my life for good." I declare. "For ten years he's been my biggest fear, and now I can finally overcome that. I honestly thought this was over, but then he showed up in Vegas and he knew exactly where I was and was trying to goad me, trying to get to me, but I showed him how tough I am, I showed him that even though I went through all of that hard stuff, I came out on top and he didn't." I say boldly.
"No further questions your honour." Alice finishes. "Our case is finished."
Judge Erickson nods. "Miss Smith you can go back to the desk."
I stand up walk out from behind the bench and walk back to my table. I make my way back to my side of the room when I hear a commotion. I whip my head around and see Adam leaping over the table lunging at me. Guards immediately grab him and restrain him. "Order, order, order, this case is finished. Your client clearly has a vendetta against the victim and has no chance in hell of being in a mental institution. I hearby call verdict myself and the defendant guilty for all accounts and sentence to life in prision." Judge Erickson announces.
Adam is glaring daggers at me as Colby who has jumped out from his seat stands in front of me. "I'm going to kill you Serena." Adam threatens.
"Get him out of here." Judge Erickson orders hammering the gavel. Guards take Adam away as Colby holds me tightly. Judge Erickson orders everyone to be quiet. "Miss Smith I'm truly sorry you had to relive your story."
I pull my head up and face the Judge. "Thank you, I'm glad it's over." I respond.
"You go out there and live your dream."
"I will."
