Chapter 57
June 1st
I sigh with my head resting in my hand. I can't get the Chief out of my mind. Why he would want to confine himself when he could be helping us? Why he would risk his health again? I know having your son accused of being a serial killer must be rough…but to endanger yourself-well nevermind…I guess technically we're all doing the same thing; the Chief just wants to change a hotel room for a jail cell…
I glance up as one of the monitors 'ding'. The camera down in the garage is picking up movement, I search the many screens in front of me 'till I see a car pulling up to a toll box. Across the screen a red banner flashes; it says, 'Verification required'. I turn around to get Old Man Watari's attention, he's boiling water on a hot plate on the other side of the room.
"Uh, Watari?" The Old Man turns and notices the screen, coming over to speak into one of our mics.
"Please state your name and reason for being here." I watch the screen as Aizawa sticks his head out of the driver window and talks to the yellow box, which I assume is a two-way speaker.
"It's Aizawa, I've got Light with me." Watari taps a button on the keyboard and the security bar in front of Aizawa's car lifts, letting them pass through and out of the camera's view.
Watari's kettle whistles and he turns to continue what he was doing and to pour himself some tea. I yawn as I lean back in my chair. "Miss Matsui?" I glance back and he's holding a tea cup. "I'm going to double check the confinement room; would you mind going topside and fetching Light Yagami?" I groan inwardly. "That is, if you remember how to get up there." I push up to a standing position with a grin.
"I mean I totally feel like a mole because of how long we've been underground, but I remember the way." He laughs and sips his tea.
"Excellent, please bring him straight here." He hands me a key-card. "You may or may not need this." I take the card and slip it into my back pocket.
"Alright, be back soon."
. . .
After a bunch of twists and turns and endless corridors I find the right elevator to take me to the garage, surprisingly enough I didn't need the key-card. I sigh as the elevator 'dings' and the doors open to reveal Aizawa, Light, and Ryuk, each looking their very own brand of miserable.
"Hey guys." Aizawa gives me a head nod and pulls out a set of keys.
"Hey Suzuki, Light you ready?" He gives the keys in a weird sort of hand off and I pocket them. I assume they're the keys to Lights cuffs. "Ryuzaki only wanted me to come this far, so I'll be heading back now." He places a hand on Lights shoulder then glances at me. "Nice seein' ya, Suzuki." I nod as he turns to leave.
"Yeah you too Aizawa…" He leaves and I lead Light into the elevator, Ryuk hesitates, but follows reluctantly.
The doors close and we head down, I can see Ryuk in the reflection of the door, he looks around uncomfortably. "Man, I hate elevators…always so small and confined…and normally so crowded." Light shows no sign that he heard him, and I don't either.
The elevator slows to a stop and 'dings' signifying we've reached our floor. The doors open and I lead Light and Ryuk back through the twists and turns and endless corridors back to the observation room.
As we enter, the first thing I notice is that all the monitors have gone black and that Watari is sitting in his chair still sipping his tea. When he notices us, he stands, leaving his cup behind. "Ryuzaki gave me specific instructions so if you're ready, I'll take you to the confinement room." Light looks at me then back to Watari and nods. I have nothing to say to Light. Watari motions for him to follow and he does the best he can with his hands bound behind his back until the old man gently takes him by the arm and leads him away. Ryuk glances back at me but follows Light without a word. When they leave the monitors turn back on as if someone was waiting for them to leave and turned them on remotely. It wouldn't surprise me if that someone was Ryuzaki and he was watching me right now.
I walk over to my chair and pop-a-squat as I watch Watari lead Light on the monitor. His room is much different than Misa's, it looks like an actual holding cell with a cot, sink, toilet, and bars across the front creating two separate areas. My eyes rove the monitors and lock onto Misa. She's no longer strapped to a refrigerator dolly, but to some sort of chair. Her head hangs low and if she's sleeping, poor thing's prolly exhausted. I sigh and go back to Light's cell, he's in there now, and I can't see Watari from the angle. Light's sitting on the cot, Ryuk stands behind him.
"Suzuki?" Ryuzaki's voice comes through the speaker catching me off guard. "I have some unfortunate news." My heart immediately starts to pound in my chest. "Chief Yagami…I wasn't able to convince him to stay at the hotel with us. He became so adamant that at one point he even asked to be pulled from the task force. I was able to convince him that a move like that would be premature…even though you and I know the truth there's no evidence to support it. I used that to change his mind enough to where he doesn't want to quit anymore…but I fear there is no changing his mind regarding the confinement…I'm sorry." My heart drops to the floor.
No…
My vision begins to blur, and I cross my arms as if somehow, it'll hold me together. I want to say something, anything, but the words just won't come.
"Aizawa is on his way with the Chief and I've already tasked Watari with the preparations for the Chief's room. I know how concerned you are, so I've changed the terms of his confinement. He will leave his phone on, keep in contact with the outside world, and if Light asks, he's still with us. The Chief will also be kept up to date on the case and we will be monitoring his health as the confinement goes on. Plus, his room will be made as comfortable as possible. You'll be there on that side and I know you'll do your best to keep him comfortable…So maybe we can talk him into changing out the cell for one of the extra rooms in your hall. He'll have only changed bases to be closer to his son at that point."
I know he's trying to make me feel better, but I just can't get the image of the Chief having a heart attack again out of my mind.
"We're a team…some days I even feel like we're a family…I just don't understand…how this could be allowed to happen." I hold myself tighter and hear Ryuzaki sigh.
"Suzuki…" His voice is soft, but tired. "I wish I could hold you, tell you everything will be okay…" Surprised by his confession I look up.
"What…?"
"As much as I hate all this; sending you there, being apart, Amane being locked up in such a way, Chief Yagami demanding to be confined…they're all events we have to endure to catch Kira-or rather, make Light confess…and I know it's painful for you because you're stuck right in the middle of it, but you need to stay strong, the way I know you are…I wouldn't make you do this if I didn't know you could…" A tear escapes and slides down my face shaking me out of my shock. I wipe it away and put an escaped piece of hair behind my ear, steeling myself.
"When can I see you again?" The words flow out without my consent.
"Hopefully soon, but it depends on Light and Misa. The faster we get a confession the quicker we can get this over with. I'll try to figure out a way to come down there, but we both know that we still need to focus on work…" Silence creeps in as I'm not sure what to say next.
"Man," Ryuk's voice catches my attention and I look at the monitor for Light's room. "I wouldn't wanna live in a place like this…" I sigh trying to get back into work mode.
"Ryuzaki, Ryuk the Shinigami is with Light in the cell."
"And the other one hasn't returned?" I shake my head.
"No, not yet. And without Rem there Misa is now effectively a civilian, she has no record of Kira, the fact she was the second Kira, this Death Note Ryuk told me about or anything else regarding the case. As far as she's concerned, we kidnapped her." Ryuzaki sighs.
"Alright, keep me updated…" I nod and turn toward the door as Watari finally returns.
"I will Ryuzaki…"
And hopefully Rem will come back and give us something to work with…
Sorry about the wait guys i know i said i'd have the chapter up quick, but my computer had a Windows 10 update that got screwed up and corrupted my whole OS and i was without it for 2 days while Geek Squad rebooted the OS...on top of that my iphone 6's LCD wire is loose and that keeps making my screen go out which is nice -_- So now that i have my computer back it would be a good time for commissions, i can also make T-shirts if anyone has always had a Death Note shirt they wanted to buy but was never in store.
