Chapter 64
July 20th – 50th Day of Confinement
It's been weeks since the appearance of the Third Kira and it looks like my feelings about Ryuzaki were on point. He's been questioning Light and Misa every day; the same thing over and over and I'm shocked that after so many days no ones snapped…However, they look awful; at this point they have got to be reaching their limits. As for Ryuzaki though, he hasn't come back around to see me…I've gotten a few texts and we've talked but it's like he's gotten obsessed with Light being Kira, which he was, but the key word is was. We can't prove it though and I just think his frustrations would be better off used as fuel to find this newbie than just badger Light with the same questions every day. He's wasting his time on them…they can't remember anything and they're powerless.
Maybe he just hasn't realized that yet or maybe he just can't come to terms with it…I should talk to him, explain to him my theory again, tell him about the new data I've gathered…I don't have much but I can tell you that this Kira is in Japan, and local for that matter…Most of the names of his victims were criminals who's names and faces were broadcast on local T.V stations. It's a start at least…there isn't really a definitive pattern like there was with Misa and Light though…the only pattern is that isn't one…He's killing indiscriminately, even if they are only accused of the crime…and I just cant shake this feeling that there's something I'm missing…a piece of the puzzle that will reveal the full picture…If I could see that, than maybe I could see what motivates this Kira…Why did this person choose to become Kira? What drove Rem to pick this replacement? Is the Third Kira's goal to act as a diversion, so that we'll be forced to release Light and Misa? Or is there something more too it I'm just not seeing yet? I need another set of eyes regardless of how obsessed with Light Ryuzaki is right now…I should just talk to him because doing this on my own, wracking my brain, is just going to get me nowhere, and I'll end up with a headache.
I slide my chair back and stretch. My back pops a few times and the pressure relief feels good. I have my earpiece in, so I press the button to connect to Ryuzaki and wait for the click that lets me know he's accepted my call. "Hey, Ryuzaki, can I talk to you for a minute?" The lines quiet but I hear another click a minute later as he turns on his mic.
"Yes, Suzuki what is it?" His normal voice comes through, I listen to see if I can hear the others but even if I can't it doesn't mean they can't hear me.
"Alone…" He's smart enough to know that means I might mention some sensitive information, like the Death Note or the Shinigami.
"Just a moment then." The line goes quiet again and I lean back interlocking my fingers behind my head. I spin the chair slightly, my legs feeling restless and thankful for the movement. It comes to my attention that I'm alone, and that Watari must have slipped out while I was working on something.
Hmm, Watari's gone again…that old man disappears constantly, and I never know where he runs off too. Does he go back to Ryuzaki and brings him treats?
"Alright, only I can hear you. What is it?" His tone comes off slightly irritated.
Hmm, he sounds upset. I wonder if someone said something to him…or maybe the case is getting to him…What could be going on over there? He might have a camera to this room and the confinement rooms, but I don't have one for home base…
"Before we get to that; are you alright, Ryuzaki? You sound…off…" I wish I could see him again…I'm starting to miss him…and maybe if I knew what was bothering him, I could make it better…
He sighs deeply. "It's just the case…I just can't figure out how to prove that Light is Kira…and it's…infuriating." He sighs again making my heart squeeze.
I wish I could just give him a hug…
"That's actually what I wanted to talk to you about. If you'd allow me to play Devi's advocate for a minute…" I pause to let him think about it.
"I'm listening…"
"Let's start with what you just said…you 'can't figure out how to prove that Light's Kira'; but that's just it, Ryuzaki, he's not Kira anymore. You can't prove something that isn't true, so you might as well be banging your head against a wall…"
"That's what it feels like…" He mumbles but I still hear it, and it makes me smile.
"At this point Light and Misa aren't Kira anymore and as much as I hate to say it, that means they're innocent, and I use that term very loosely, because they don't have memories of their crimes. That doesn't mean I won't bring the hammer down when they do get their memories back, it just means that I feel like our efforts are better utilized elsewhere…like tracking down the Third Kira. I haven't been able to find out much, but his victims are mostly Japanese and when I cross referenced that with local T.V station broadcasts I found that most of the names matched up, so he's likely in the local area as well. Other than that though, he's killing indiscriminately…I feel like it's a start but I can only do so much Ryuzaki…I need your help on this, I need your head in the game…in the right part of the game. I can't have you obsessed over Light while this Third Kira runs rampant…You and I both know he was Kira and he facilitated all those murders, we know he used Misa for all the poor girl was worth; and for now, that should be enough…You should take your frustrations and use them as fuel for tracking down the Third Kira so we can get our hands on this Death Note that creates these murderers or at least gives them this power…maybe then, we can use it to put Light away. It's one thing to say he's Kira, it's another to match his fingerprints or writing to the pages…then even the Chief would have to believe us…" I pause and give him time to process.
"Alright, I see your point, but what do you want to do with Light and Misa? You know I can't just let them walk around out on the street. It's too big a risk that this Third Kira would communicate with them, regardless of if they have their memories or not…"
"That's a good point…but I'm sure you've thought about it before, otherwise what's the point of the facility I'm in? You had to be planning to move everyone here and make it home base eventually…and why not utilize Light at the same time? Move everyone here, and convince this Pure Light to help us, he's dying to help anyway. He wants to prove that he's not Kira, so why not let him help us track down the new one? We'll have to keep him on a tight chain to make sure he doesn't interact with the Third Kira before we do, but I don't see the harm in putting him to work…As for Misa…I guess she's have to live here too…" I trial off thinking about how Misa could fit into all this.
"Hmm, those are all good point and ideas, I think you're right. We can keep Light occupied as he 'helps' us find this Third Kira and by doing so be able to keep an eye on him. Then, as for Misa, I don't mind giving her a private floor. She should be happy being close to Light like that…unfortunately though she is a celebrity and if we keep her any longer we may have a riot on out hands…so she'll have to go back to work…Perhaps with a member of the task force in her crew. What do you say Suzuki, want to be Misa's new manager?"
"Hard no, Ryuzaki. Besides, my talents are more useful near you and Light where we can bounce ideas off each other and where I can see patterns that you might miss…Make Matsuda do it, he seems up to date with all the Pop Culture stuff anyway…I'm just a foreigner…or did you forget that?"
"Relax, I wasn't asking seriously. I've spent enough time away from you as it is, I don't want you away from Task force, babysitting…But regardless, we have a plan now. They'll be released, but I think that I'll give them one more test first…" I roll my eyes and try not to laugh at him saying she needs a babysitter.
"If you think that's really necessary…but at least no one will be confined anymore, the Chief won't come out until Light does and he's looking pretty rough…" My eyes travel to the screen where he's sitting in his chair, head hung low.
"I agree…but thank you, Suzuki, for that much needed reality check…I was beginning to get lost in the case and I feel a little better that I have a direction to go in…although I can't help but feel like we're also back to square one…"
"You're welcome Ryuzaki. I can't wait to see you again. You've been so wrapped up in work that I haven't seen you since that day…" My mind wanders to the sparring match when things got a little steamy.
"Oh? Do you feel like you need to let off some steam again?" His words and the way he says it turns my face bright red.
"S-shut up. Now that you've got a plan, don't you have work to do?" He laughs and it's the sweetest sound.
"Alright, I'll get back to work, I feel much better, thank you Suzuki. I'll see you soon.
"You're welcome Ryuzaki, I can't wait." I hear a disconnecting click, turn my mic off and look at the screens.
Man, everyone really does look terrible…
"Are you alright Chief Yagami? There's no need for you to still be confined." Ryuzaki's voice travels into the Chiefs cell and out through my monitor. It surprises me a little that it's unmodded as well, seeing as how anytime he talked to Misa he used the modulator.
"Ryuzaki, it's been over a month since Kira reappeared…I'm convinced Light's not Kira, you're the only one who needs convincing. I'm not leaving here without my son." The Chief sighs, looking exhausted and I can't wait for him to get out of here.
"Light, are you okay?" Ryuzaki's voice moves to Light's monitor and is now garbled, he must have turned the modulator on. Light's laying on his side, his hands bound behind him; he looks uncomfortable, but also too exhausted to let it bother him.
"Yeah, I'm fine…but Ryuzaki, the killings have stopped since I've been confined…and I've been thinking that must mean Kira knows what's going on here…using this line of reasoning-"
"No Light, the killings stopped because you're Kira." I fold my arms and watch the scene play out.
"No! I'm not Kira! How many times do I have to tell you?!" Light pleads for Ryuzaki to believe him…again…
"Amane?" Still modded Ryuzaki continues to Misa. She's sitting in the confinement chair with her head down; she must be tired.
"Yes…?"
"You don't seem too well, are you okay?"
"Are you and idiot? I've been here for weeks; how okay could I be?" Her tone is sarcastic to a fault, but she doesn't yell. It makes me laugh, but I try to stifle it.
Well you asked for that one, Ryuzaki.
"Ah, you have a point…" He sounds like he just got slapped.
"Please, just let me go…I miss Light…" Her voice breaks as it breaks my heart, and that smile I had disappears.
Soon Misa, soon. Just because that son of a bitch used you before doesn't mean the love you feel isn't real and doesn't mean that this Pure Light won't treat you better. You may have been a monster, but seeing you like this…I want you to go back to having a normal life…
"Chief Yagami…" I look back to the Chief's screen where Ryuzaki is back to using his normal voice.
"What?"
"I want to have a word with you directly. Will you return to Task force Headquarters?" He glances directly at the camera intrigued. "I will share my conclusion on this case. As Light's father, I want you to be the first to hear it…" The Chief sighs.
"Fine…"
"Suzuki…" My headset clicks and comes to life with Ryuzaki's voice almost instantly. I was kind of expecting him to ask me to get the Chief ready, so it doesn't startle me at all.
"Yeah?"
"Please go and release Chief Yagami, Watari will meet you in the garage and take it from there." I stand and stretch again, popping my neck as I turn it side to side.
"You got it."
. . .
I open the door to the Chief's confinement room; he stands and stretches when he seems me. "Hi Suzuki." I take keys out of my pocket and unlock the cell, letting the door hang open.
"Hey there Chief, ready to get the hell out of here?" He chuckles looking haggard but manages to wrap an arm around my shoulder.
"Only if when all this is over, I can bring Light with me. Do you know anything about what Ryuzaki wants to talk about?" He lets go and steps away, I shake my head 'no'.
"Can't say."
"I understand…" He sighs and stretches again; I hear a few popping sounds. I extend my arm through the door as an invitation for him to go first.
"C'mon Chief, the faster you get to Ryuzaki, the faster Light might able to get out." He nods in affirmation and I walk him up to the garage, eager for us to do some real work and catch this Third Kira.
