Chapter 65
July 23rd
It's been three days since the Chief left confinement and Ryuzaki still won't tell me his plan…He says that we'll be able to watch it all go down; but hasn't told me what it is. He just keeps saying he's going to test Light and Misa one more time and that after this we'll be able to be together. He says the building is done and we'll be moving the task force there. I'm happy, but I have a bad feeling about all this…why won't he tell me the plan? Unless he knows I'd be opposed to it and doesn't want me to try and stop him…
. . .
"Suzuki…Ryuzaki's voice comes through my earpiece as I flip through files on my counter/desk, trying to make sense of this mess. I've been pulling all-nighters and only taking power naps since the Chief left. It's not like Ryuzaki told me to or anything, I've just been too nervous to sleep…guess it's finally catching up to me. My organization goes down the shitter when I'm tired.
I slap down some papers I was looking at and rub my eyes. "Yeah Ryuzaki, what is it?" I pinch the bridge of my nose and look up at the screens as if they'll show him to me.
"Are you doing alright?" His voice is concerned and comes through normal, as he doesn't use the modulator on me. I sigh and drop my hand from my face lazily.
"Yeah just really tired…I haven't been sleeping…this case has me all worked up. I'm stressed and worried…and just tired…" I sigh again.
"Oh, I see…well after this is over, we can be together, and you'll be able to rest." I smile at how 'matter of fact' he says it, such confidence.
"I hope so…I don't know how you do it…So, did you just wanna check on me or…"
"Could you please bring Miss Amane to the garage? It's almost time. Also, no blindfold or foot chains. Just cuffs behind her back for now." I stand slowly a pit forming in my stomach.
Something bad is about to happen…
"You got it…" I snatch my keys off the counter and make my way to Misa's room.
. . .
The door opens with a creak and Misa looks in my direction, but with the blindfold on she can't see me. "Hello? Who's there?" There's a slight panic to her voice, but it's only ever been me in here so it strikes me as weird that she would think someone else would come in. "Suzuki, is that you?"
"Yeah Misa, it's me." She signs in relief and I walk over to start to undo her bindings; feet first, then the straps across her chest.
"What are you doing?" Her tone turns excited, but her guards still up.
"You're getting out." She gets even more excited and starts to wiggle in the chair, making my job a little more difficult.
"Really?! So, I'll get to see Light?!" I undo the final strap and help her stand. She stumbles slightly but I catch her, and I can only imagine how numb her legs must feel.
"Yeah, maybe." I give a noncommittal answer, not knowing Ryuzaki's plan.
"I'm so excited! I've missed him so much!" As she fidgets excitedly, I undo her straight jacket, until all that's left is her blindfold.
She wrings her wrists and shakes out her hands. I hook a finger in the blindfold and take it off in one simple movement. She squints at the light; but is beyond excited. "You weren't lying! I really am getting out! I can see!" She jumps around and gives me a big hug and I'm shocked at first, but then she lets go. "Oh, I'm sorry, I was just so excited I couldn't control myself." I shrug.
"It's fine, I understand. C'mon." She nods and we head toward the door. I pick up a pair of cuffs on the way out and clip one over her wrist, but leave it hanging. She looks at it confused.
"What's this for? I thought I was free…"
"You will be, but Ryuzaki has one more test for you. Also, he wants your hands behind your back in the car, but I don't see a reason for it right now." I give her a smile and she calms down.
"And if I pass this test, I'll be able to see Light?" I shrug.
"Dunno, it's up to Ryuzaki." She nods, a look of fierce determination in her eyes.
"Alright, I'll do it. I'll do anything if it means I'll get to see Light."
I thought you might say something like that.
I opened the door to leave and to my surprise Watari's waiting on the other side. He's holding a towel and what looks to be a bundle of clothes in a bag. "Watari…" His name escapes me in a confused whisper.
"Ryuzaki thought Miss Amane might want to freshen up. He instructed me to bring her a change of clothes and inform you to show her the showers." I trade a confused look with Misa, but ultimately shrug and take the bag and towel from Watari.
"Alright, message received, I guess…" Watari nods and walks off toward the door to the surveillance room, but you have to go through there to get to anywhere; there are no camera's in the bathroom, I made damn sure of that. So, it's not like he's gonna spy on us.
Misa's uncharacteristically quiet until we get to the showers and I lead her to the one that's a private room. "I get to shower by myself?" The surprise in her voice makes me look at her like she's stupid.
Does she think we're that perverted?
Yeah…I'll be just outside, in case you need anything, but yeah…" A giant smile overcomes her face. "You'll need to hurry though, and I'm sure when all this is over, you'll be able to take another one…but the faster you go the faster you might be able to see Light." She balls her fists still looking determined.
"Then I'll make sure to scrub really fast." I nod mentally rolling my eyes and leave her too it, taking the cuffs off her wrist and bringing them with me.
. . .
I twirl the cuffs around my finger lazily as the door to the bathroom opens and Misa steps out with a towel on her head. She looks clean and refreshed, I inspect the clothes that came from the bag. She's in a button up shirt and has shorts on underneath. I also notice she has fluffy flip flops on her feet.
Were those really in the bag Watari gave her? I wonder where they came from…
"I feel so much better, but my hair is still wet…I don't normally let it air dry…" She says it just as a statement and isn't really asking me, but I figure I might as well let her use my hair dryer. I sigh. It might be July, but I also can't let her leave with wet hair.
"C'mon, you can use mine." She smiles happily and I lead her to my room and when that's over I lead her up to the garage where, to my surprise, the Chief is waiting in a car.
I don't say anything as I cuff Misa's hands behind her back and help her into the car. The Chief and I make eye contact for a brief moment and his eyes are completely focused and fiercely determined. I can't help but wonder what's going on inside his head. I tap on the roof of the car and step back without a word, the car pulls away slowly and I watch them leave for a second before heading back to my post.
On the way back I pass Light and Watari. Light also looks like he got the privilege of a shower. His hair is clean and seems longer than it was when he first came here. His eyes are clear and show no hint of Kira's corruption. He's wearing a button up and jeans. He doesn't say a word and neither does Watari, we pass in the hall silently as I continue my journey, still wondering what this test might be.
. . .
As I enter the surveillance room, I immediately notice a change in the screens. The ones that had previously shown the confinement rooms are now off, but there are new ones showing the Chiefs' car and Misa.
What's going on here? Is this the test Ryuzaki planned? He did say we'd be able to watch it all go down…this has to be it, but what kind of test can it be if they're in the car?
"I never imagined Mr. Stalker was an old man." I hear Misa's voice through the monitor and look up, cringing slightly.
Does she still think she was abducted by a stalker fan? She saw me, she should have realized by now that the police put her in confinement. I know I told her who we were…and she was told that she was picked up because she was under suspicious of being the Second Kira…So why call the Chief Mr. Stalker?
"I'm not a stalker, I'm a detective." The Chief is stern in his response, but still looks focused.
"Oh, now I remember! That thing about me being the Second Kira…wait, that was all for real? There's no way you guys are the police…the police would never tie someone up like that. And what about Suzuki? Is she with the police too? She said I had to keep these cuffs on while I was in the car, but I don't understand why if you're gonna set me free…Also, who is this Ryuzaki everyone keeps mentioning, and what's this test I have to do so I can finally see Light?" Misa asks a million questions and I honestly don't blame her. All of this is very hush hush and kinda suspicious. Not only that, but if I was locked up for fifty days with no one to really talk to, I might come out a chatterbox too.
"Amane, be quiet." The Chief scolds her like he would his own child, causing her to sink down in the seat and pout.
It's quiet for a few more minutes, there's a camera facing the windshield and I watch as the Chief pulls into a garage, two people standing under the lights ahead of him. As he gets closer it becomes clear that it's Aizawa and Light.
Did Watari pass Light off to Aizawa?
The Chief stops the car while Misa fidgets excitedly in the back seat. Light's hands are also cuffed behind him and Aizawa brings him around to the drivers' side and helps him into the back seat. Neither the Chief nor Aizawa say anything to each other, Misa on the other hand…
"Light! I've missed you so much!" Misa fidgets as the Chief takes off again and I'm sure if her hands weren't bound behind her she's be all over Light by now.
"Misa, you're here too?" There's surprise in his voice mixed with confusion, he turns to his father. "Dad, what's going on?" Misa gasps shocked.
"What?! He's your dad? Oh no, I called him a stalker…I'm so sorry Light…" Everyone seems to ignore her.
"Are we finally clear? Are you going to release us?" Light leans forward in his seat. I find that I'm standing in the middle of the room, so I take a seat in my rolley chair and watch the screens.
"No…right now…I'm taking you to…your execution." I jolt up sending my chair flying across the room, my hands slamming on the desk.
What…what is he talking about?
I can barely breath as the Chief continues. "We're going to an underground facility which has been set up to keep your executions a secret from the public. I volunteered to take you there."
This…This isn't right, I told Misa she was getting out, that she'd be able to see Light…Is this Ryuzaki's test? My heart is pounding, and I try my best to calm down, but it doesn't work. Ryuzaki wouldn't do this, there's no proof and he knows it. He agreed with me, this has got to be the test, I just have to sit and watch, that's all…but it's so hard. This is so wrong, even if it's fake…
Naturally Light and Misa lose their minds at this news and I mean who wouldn't. If I was told I was getting gout and then told I was being executed, I'd freak too.
"Execution?! What are you talking about Dad?!" Light's voice shakes as he slowly loses his mind and control. Misa spews incoherent gibberish I can't quite understand but she's obviously freaked out.
"L has concluded that Light Yagami is Kira and Misa Amane is the Second Kira. He's declared, that once you two are executed, the Kira killings will end." The Chief's voice stays the same determined tone the whole time.
"What? I thought the killings had stopped…" Light's blindsided by this news, and you can hear the disbelief in his voice.
I don't understand Ryuzaki's plan…why is he lying to them? The killings stopped, but they started back up again…
"No, they never stopped." For a second the Chiefs voice goes cold, and it freaks me out a little.
"What? That's not what I was told…"
"L was probably keeping it from you to get a confession. That doesn't mater now though. L has promised that your deaths will stop the killings and the police and government have agreed; Kira will be eradicated in secret…"
"No way! Wait, Dad, you know I'm not Kira!" Light pleads for the Chief to believe him and I'm stuck watching them, powerless to stop this 'test'. My hands are still on the table and I'm standing, but I can't tear my eyes away long enough to get my chair.
"What are you thinking?! He's your own son!" Misa raises her voice in a vain attempt to talk some sense into the Chief.
"This wasn't my choice, it was L's. He controls the police now; he's solved numerous cases and has never been wrong, who are we to argue with him?"
This is one hell of an act…it feels so real…but the Chief…how could he agree to this? Light's freedom must be worth it…he'd do anything to free his son, even this horrible lie…
"Dad! You would believe L over me?! Your own son?" Light's starting to panic, he can't stop what's coming.
"L is even saying that if the killings don't stop after this, then he'll take responsibility and end his own life."
For a moment my heart stops and I can't breathe. My chest tightens at the thought of Ryuzaki's death, it breaks something inside me. It's not real, it's not real…but it feels so real…I can't breathe…is this all improvised? Why wouldn't Ryuzaki give me a heads up…why wouldn't he prepare me for this? I can't watch this…it hurts…
"L…what is he thinking?" Light tries to wrap his brain around it.
What is he thinking, indeed…?
"I understand that with the facts we have, this seems like a reasonable assumption but…this is all a mistake! L is making a mistake…How…How could he come to a conclusion like this? Why would he?! Something's wrong here Dad! This isn't like L at all! He's always solved his cases with hard evidence, so why this? Why now? Why would he let this case end like this?! It's not right! And I'm not Kira!" The car stops and I have no idea where they are, nothing looks familiar and I wasn't paying enough attention to the windshield to see where they were going.
What's going on…
"We're here…" The Chiefs voice sends a chill down my spine.
Something's wrong.
Misa and Light look around, neither knowing where they are. Misa speaks up first though. "Oh, you must be letting us escape."
"Where is this? Why did you bring us out to the middle of nowhere?"
"No one will see us out here." The Chief ignores them as he's in his own little world. "I've brought you here instead od the execution grounds…Light…" He turns around to face them. "I'm going to kill you here and then kill myself." My heart drops like a rock.
What?
Haha, I'm mean, I left you with a cliffhanger. That's alright though I just have to type the next chapter, it's already written. I'm just too tired to do it right now.
