Chapter 66

"Light…I'm going to kill you here and then kill myself."

What…?

July 23rd (con)

My heart drops like a rock, but before I can think I find myself running for the door. I can still hear them talking, but I can't make out the words. All I know is that I need to get to my car, and I need to find them. I need to stop this.

The door opens and Watari is there, standing in my way, keeping me from leaving. His hands are suddenly on my shoulders and he's speaking words I can't understand as I try desperately to free myself. I need to stop the Chief from killing his son. I look up at Watari, furious that he wont let me go, wont let me stop them; I see his lips moving but I can't hear a sound, my heartbeat is too loud, it's drowning out everything else. I fight to get around him, to have him loosen his grip just a little but I can't, he's stronger than he looks.

"Suzuki, stop!" A voice yells in my head and I do what it says, I stop right there and let the old man wrap his arms around me. "Just stop…" The voice sighs and is relieved that I complied. I don't know why I did but there's something familiar about it. "Just turn around, I promise, if they're as innocent as you say they are, then everything will be fine." My brain starts to calm down and I realize it's Ryuzaki talking to me through my earpiece. I take a deep breath and slowly do as he says, but I find that I've sunken to the floor, the old man along with me. I'm on my knees and I just turn my head to watch the screens.

"Dad! Misa's right! If we die here, we'll never uncover the truth! We should run away! The truth might come out, no, I'll find the truth while running!" My body is shaking for some reason, so I wrap my arms around myself defensively. Watari moves his hands back to my shoulders and having him there is somewhat of a comfort, despite the horror that I'm witnessing.

"It's too late Light…It's already been decided by those above me. You're dying either way. At least this way it'll be by my hand…"

What…?

The Chief pulls out a gun and aims it at Light who begs him to stop. "Stop! Dad! I swear I'm not Kira! If we die here, we'll fall right into Kira's trap! Please you have to believe me, can't you see what's happening here?!" The desperation in his voice haunts me to my very core. Without the memories and corruption of Kira, Light's just an innocent kid with his Dad pointing a gun at him. I don't want to watch anymore I want to turn away…

"Amane…Light and I will die here, but I have no reason to kill you. The police will find this car soon, and you'll be executed at the planned site…" Misa's too shocked to say anything, but Light's still begging for his life, for his father to see reason.

"L-listen Dad, if we were Kira and the Second Kira, then there's no way we'd let you kill us! There are no witnesses here, if we were the Kira's then-" The Chief aims the gun inches from Light's head, menacingly.

"Shut up Light!" It takes me a moment to register what Light just said, but when I do it all falls into place.

If they were still Kira, there's no way Misa would let the Chief kill Light. Ryuzaki is betting on that she'd use the eyes and kill him…but even in that theory she still doesn't have the book and her hands are bound…but only Ryuzaki and I know about the book…and since we have no proof that it exists we have to go on what we do have…The Second Kira needs only a face to kill…and if Misa was Kira, she'd kill the Chief right now…but that gun is real…they must be petrified.

Light and Misa both start screaming as the Chief continues to hold the gun inches from his sons face. "We're both murderers' son, so we'll see each other again in hell." The Chief pulls the trigger and I turn and bury my face in Watari's chest.

He pulled the trigger…he shot them…how could he…?

"A blank…?" Light's voice reaches my ears and I slowly turn around, they're both fine and I don't understand. The Chief lets out a relieved sigh and turns back around in his seat.

"Thank God…"

"Thank God? What do you mean, Dad?" Light's completely lost, and I don't blame him, I don't blame either of them. If it was me, I would have serious trust issues and probably a bit of PTSD after that little display.

"I'm sorry you two, this was the only way to end your confinement. I only agreed to this because I truly believed in your innocence." The Chief looks directly at the camera. "Did you see all that Ryuzaki? I did exactly what you said and I'm still alive."

Watari lets go of my shoulders and leaves the room. I'm still shaking a little but knowing it's all over I'm able to slowly calm down and stand. I retrieve my chair and sit back down, continuing to watch the monitors.

"Yes, brilliant acting. In that situation if Amane was the Second Kira, who can kill with just a persons' face, I don't think she would have let you kill Light. She would have used her powers to kill you before you pulled the trigger. The same can be said for Light; I believe Kira would kill his own father if he needed to. Its possible Light figured out it was all an act, but as promised I will end their confinement. Also as promised; even though Amane claimed they were tapes to send to an occult T.V show, we still have various pieces of evidence connecting her to the Second Kira, so we'll put her under surveillance." I let out a breath, trying to force myself to relax.

This is it, once this is all over, we're finally gonna go after the Third Kira…

"What?! You still suspect me?!" Before Ryuzaki can say anything the Chief steps in.

"Amane, you get to return to your normal life. If you're not guilty then you can just think of the surveillance as police protection." She takes this in and instantly accepts it.

"Oh yeah, since I'm not the Second Kira, I'll just pretend I've got some bodyguards."

"And Light, just as I promised you as well, I will work it out so that you and I will be together 24 hours a day, working on solving this case." Light's face…light's up, but mine does not.

Be with Light 24 hours a day? What's he gonna do? Join them at the hip?

Light doesn't seem bothered at the part about being together 24/7, he's just excited to be working together. "You got it Ryuzaki, we'll catch Kira together!"

"Yes, I'm pleased to be working with you." He lied… "Chief Yagami, please bring Light and Misa Amane back to us."

"Alright Ryuzaki, we'll be back as soon as we can." The Chief starts up the car and drives away. The monitor turns off and I assume Ryuzaki did it from his side, but I hear a noise and turn around to see Watari holding a remote.

"Watari…what's going on?" My voice is quiet and I'm still trying to process what happened.

"Ryuzaki wanted me to bring you back to headquarters." He walks over and sets the remote on the desk.

"He did, why?"

"I couldn't say. Are you ready to go?" I do a little mental check of all my stuff.

Wallet, phone, keys, spybelt…I think everything I need is on me. Not like I won't be coming back here…

"Yeah, I think so…let's go."

. . .

Watari brings me to a new hotel and I assume they've moved headquarters one more time. He leads me up to the suite, both of us quiet. I walk in and Aizawa and Matsuda greet me with pats on the back.

"Suzuki! How are you; we haven't seen you in forever." Matsuda smiles, genuinely excited to see me.

"Oh, I'm fine, just a little peeved at Ryuzaki for not filling me in on the plan. Watching the Chief shove a gun in Light's face was a little much…" And by a little peeved I mean I want to slap the shit out of him…

Aizawa nods. "We weren't told anything at the beginning either, Ryuzaki filled us in as it was happening. I can't imagine how it felt to watch without any explanation.

Helpless, terrified, angry…need I go on?

"So, speaking of…" I look around not seeing Ryuzaki's black mop he calls hair. "Where is he anyway?" As soon as the question leaves my mouth Matsuda gets a shit eating grin.

"Oh, that's right, you haven't seen him in a while have you. You must be dying to at this point. When was the last time anyway?" He puts his hand to his chin as if he's trying to remember, but Aizawa butts in.

"There was that day when he just disappeared and didn't come back until the next afternoon." My face heats up. Busted… "Bet he was with you that day, while we slaved away over here."

"He was in a really good mood when he came back too, wasn't he?" Matsuda nudges me with his elbow. "C'mon Suzuki, give us the good, what did you and Ryuzaki do?" I push him back gently, my face on fire.

"I'm not telling you anything." I laugh and so do they.

"Don't worry, we were just joking. We missed teasing you and Ryuzaki isn't any fun." Aizawa claps me on the back. "After he called Watari he locked himself in his room. Matsuda and I are afraid to go in there, just in case there are rose petals everywhere." I didn't think my face could get any redder but somehow it does. I go from dusted pink to four alarm chili, in a matter of seconds. I make a break for it as Matsuda turns to Aizawa confused.

"Rose petals?"

. . .

I knock on the door to Ryuzaki's room, but no one answers. Remembering what Aizawa and Matsuda said I try the door anyway and find that it's actually unlocked. I open it slowly and call in, so I don't scare him. "Ryuzaki, it's Suzuki, I'm coming in…"

I walk into a room dimly lit by the glow of the setting sun. An orange haze covers everything including a bed with disheveled sheets, as if someone just recently got out of them. In the orange glow it doesn't take long to find the silhouette against the window, looking out over the city. Ryuzaki turns around as I reach the middle of the room. Emotions overwhelm me, love, anger, lust, sadness, confusion, enlightenment. I want to run to his arms and kiss him until we run out of breath, but I also want to slap him silly for not filling me in on the plan.

"Suzuki?" He turns and takes his hands out of his pockets. He starts to make his way across the room and when we meet, he put both hands on the sides of my face and gives me a passionate kiss. "I've missed you so much." I smile as my anger disappears into love.

"I missed you too." I move a strand of hair out of his face and tuck it behind his ear as the sun sets behind him.

"I didn't want the others to see us, so I waited for you in here." I nod.

"I figured." He looks me up and down.

"I want to apologize for not mentioning the details of the test to you…I wasn't thinking…there's no excuse." He looks away shamefully and any anger that had been left over, vanishes and I sigh.

"I was so angry, I wanted to storm in here and slap you…" I confess and turn to sit on the edge of the bed.

"But you didn't…Why?"

I smile seductively. "Because kissing you seems like a much better idea." He returns the smile and comes over, putting a hand on either side of me. He kisses my forehead first then slowly makes his way down, kissing my neck as we lean back, until I'm lying on the bed. His hand makes its way up my shirt and I find mine in his hair. We get entangled in one another and completely forget about the others, waiting for us in the other room. That is, until someone knocks on the door. We both freeze, Ryuzaki looks down at me and I stifle a giggle, he smiles and does the same.

"Yes, who is it?" He yells at the door and I try not to laugh as I'm practically under him at this point. He puts a finger to his lips and shushes me through a smile.

"Ryuzaki, Chief Yagami has arrived with Light and Miss Amane." I cover my mouth, so I don't laugh, Ryuzaki clears his throat before calling out again.

"Thank you Watari, we'll only be a moment." He slowly gets off me and stands at the edge of the bed with his hand outstretched. "C'mon Suzuki, our job awaits us." I take his hands and we walk together over to the door, beyond it lying the Kira Investigation, the Task Force members, and a future full of the unknown.
