A/n: I know it's been awhile since I last updated this story. For folks who have read this chapter and are rereading it again, I've made some additional edits in terms of word phrasing and sentence structuring. The unintentional longevity of this chapter had me notice repeats of excessive word usage (i.e. smiled, thereafter to name a few), so that has been proofread and replaced with their appropriate synonyms.
On a side note, in case of confusion, be sure to read the VR Troopers (2020): When Worlds Collide origins saga before starting this story. As always, enjoy.
The past month had been a roller coaster ride for the ages. What had been a get-together of three lifelong friends would find them thrust into combat against an unbeknownst vile faction seizing to control their reality. In an effort to combat against the likes of Grimlord and his robotic army, Ryan Steele alongside J.B Reese and Kaitlin Star would be introduced to a set of gold pendants known as Virtualizers to become a group of fearless warriors clad in multi-colored armor. Co-created by the minds of Horatio Hart and Tyler Steele, the three of them would become the defenders of virtual reality: VR Troopers - a hybrid of human and machine.
From J.B's POV:
"Leadership – the action of leading a group of people or an organization" Simply put, it is a quality trait in which one is appointed to bring unity to their team, striving to be the best they can possibly be. Leaders inspire others to follow a certain path in their life.
For as long as I've spent performing Martial Arts, it took an extensive amount of time and investment to better understand my craft. When my Sensei promoted me to be a Karate instructor at the Tao Dojo, it was a reward of the effort and commitment I spent pouring my heart into since I was a little boy. As grateful as I've been with the opportunity bestowed upon me, that wouldn't be the only thing weighing on my shoulders. Since Grimlord and his minions invaded the Real World, the war between humanity and mutant supremacy has escalated in a fever pitch. But they aren't the only ones in the picture.
With the VR Troopers here to ensure the protection of innocent lives, it's been a big responsibility than we could have ever imagined. Being a 'good' leader requires effective decision making, empathy towards their companions, and strategic thinking that would benefit the team in the long run. As I've demonstrated before, I realized how vital it meant when it came to teaching Karate to my students. Just recently, I was appointed the role as leader of the VR Troopers. You would think even with my expertise in leadership I would carry the load for my team. But I'm talking more than just running a dojo. This is the fate of Mother Nature hanging in the balance. I've denied this to myself repeatedly but even a leader has his doubts, and that was an ordeal I had to experience.
~Season 1, Episode 1:
Leader in Doubt, Part One~
Inside a privately sanctioned laboratory operated by Horatio Hart, the trio underwent a training simulation equipped with a VR head gear and a pair of gloves. Clad in their respective Troopers suits, Ryan along with Kaitlin and J.B navigated through the dark corridors at a Detention Center.
"Troopers, I received some disturbance over at the food court. More Skugs have infiltrated the building," Professor Hart informed them from their communication speaker.
"There's not enough time. We have to diffuse the bomb before this whole place collapses," Ryan said.
"Ryan has a point. We have to act quickly," Kaitlin concurred. Just as they waited for a response, déjà vu struck at it again.
"Look, hear me out. As long as the timer keeps ticking, it comes down to a final verdict," J.B said self aware of the circumstances at a dire situation.
"Crap, this is like what we had to deal with at my father's lab," Ryan alluded to an incident they experienced prior.
"It'll be best if we all split up. Kaitlin and I are going to free those captive from the Skug soldiers. That leaves you Ryan. Use the map on the icon screen and navigate to the location where the bomb may be," J.B instructed.
"Ugh I hate splitting up," Ryan whined as he sighed subsequently.
"We'll do our best to evacuate the detainees. Contact us when you're finish and we'll regroup," Kaitlin ordered him.
Ryan nodded. The team went along their separate ways performing their respective objectives needed to diffuse the bomb.
By the double doors leading into the cafeteria, J.B and Kaitlin stood across from one another observe the Skugs' treatment towards the detainees. The level of fear and hopelessness were apparent among those involved.
"Okay, on my mark you try and hold off the Skugs for as long as you can. I'm going to stealth my way and take out any last one of them in the way. I'm going to direct everyone out of the cafeteria safely as possible," he instructed to her.
"Never thought I'd demonstrate my improv skills in a VR simulation," Kaitlin joked before changing up into a more serious tone. "Just be careful out there."
To that end, J.B worked his way around the area evading each foot soldier in his path. He even resorted to using whichever self defense move he needed to thwart them off. The remaining Skug stood in front of them unaware of his presence. Utilizing this opportunity to his advantage, J.B knocked him out head first onto the salad bar. As the Skugs remained oblivious of his presence, he proceeded to direct a group of hostages out of the area undetected.
Kaitlin continued to taunt the Skug soldiers doing everything in her power to keep them distracted. The more she continued to play decoy, the easier of a chance they had in succeeding their objective. When it came down to the wire, it seemed everything went accordingly in their favor. This sign of momentum would not last for long. As a detainee dropped a family heirloom on the foot of a Skug soldier, he took immediate notice of J.B along with the rest of the hostages accompanying him. It was there in which he ordered the rest of its teammates signaled the fire alarm.
"Damn it!" J.B exclaimed. The Skugs began to resort to physicality assaulting many of the detainees that remain hostage. From the get go, J.B retaliated taking out the gold headed foot soldiers daring to threaten them. As he could resume focus, another Skug prepared to ambush him when a firing laser shot from Kaitlin laid him out.
"How about we teach these bozos a lesson?" Kaitlin said prompting J.B to pull out his laser blaster.
In the control center, the Skugs monitored the activity that transpired from their surveillance screen. On cue they exited out of the room preparing to forge an attack on the intruders.
"Let's show them what we got," J.B commanded. He and Kaitlin went in on offense wiping out each Skug that dared to destroy them. As time is of the essence, they took full advantage utilizing their blasters to good use. The emphasis of teamwork proved effective for the impervious couple. With more Skugs coming in on the aid, J.B and Kaitlin had to resort to one desperate tactic that can save them.
"Would it be captain obvious of me to say that we're outnumbered?" Kaitlin wondered panting from her helmet.
"We've been through this before. Don't let the odds get in the way of your confidence," J.B encouraged her. The Skugs surrounded the two Troopers cornering them at every direction possible.
"Whatever suggestions you have now is the time," Kaitlin said. Anxiety began to boil her mentally with just moments to spare.
"Kaitlin, on a count of three we'll fire our lasers directly at these Skugs. Get behind me and when I say three, we'll pull the trigger at the same time," J.B ordered.
"Here goes nothing," Kaitlin abided taking a deep breath to concentrate on her aim. Simultaneously, they timed their cue all of while the Skugs continued to draw closer towards them. When the timing came, they fired their blasters at the foot soldiers in clockwise rotation.
"Alright we did it," J.B shouted in joy.
"Let's catch up with Ryan and see if he managed to track the bomb," Kaitlin insisted. With a nod from J.B, they tracked the coordinates of their friend's location looking to regroup the team as a whole.
Ryan took this moment to configure the wires in their respective outputs. With each attempted variation, not even he could decipher the mechanism.
"Come on Ryan you can do it. You only got five minutes remaining. Take deep breaths," he mumbled proceeding as followed. The more he failed, his patience would deteriorate drastically. A sense of built up frustration coming from his voice was already apparent.
"It's no use. What the hell am I supposed to do?" Ryan shouted much to his annoyance. Suddenly, he began to pick up a signal coming from his teammates.
"Ryan, how much progress are you making?" J.B asked.
"I'm trying to diffuse the bomb here on the rooftop. At this rate, I could use some help from MacGyver," Ryan responded. In the midst of all the tension, a sudden occurrence came when a laser fired sparks that erupted from his suit.
"Ryan, are you there?" Kaitlin chimed in on the communication.
Ryan slowly pulled himself off from the ground. He looked around to trace the creature responsible for his attack. With no sign of its presence, the Trooper summoned his Lightning Saber in preparation.
"I'm fine. Whatever that was, the Skugs aren't the only ones running the asylum," he responded. Ryan looked at his surroundings to detect any unusual sightings. The instant he noticed a laser beam firing towards him, the Trooper dodged out of the way in no time. Making its presence known, the creature happened to be a Cicada based robot clad in black and brown texturing with sharp claws and a pair of wings that provide extensive flight ability.
"I guess I've got an obstacle on my hands," said Ryan. He swung his saber towards the insecticide but every attempt failed to land. The creature retaliated striking its twin needle attack directly at him. Once more sparks ignited from his armor suit as Ryan fell back on the surface.
The creature confronted the defenseless Trooper crawling out of harm's way. Ryan resorted into using his laser blaster to shoot down the creature. He followed it up with a series of Karate kicks to the best of his ability. Even with his expertise, it would not be enough. The Cicada built robot lashed back utilizing its sharp twin needles once again to annihilate Ryan.
"I've got to stop that bomb," he grunted struggling to catch his breath. Just when he was about to meet his doom, it would take a group of familiar friends to even the score.
"Ryan," Kaitlin shouted. Along with J.B, they approached their fallen comrade to check on his condition.
"Thanks you guys," he replied expressing gratitude towards his teammates.
"What in the world is that?" J.B wondered.
"That creature really means business," Kaitlin said observing the creature from up close. In unison, the VR Troopers summoned their blasters firing numerous shots at it. The Cicada robot let out a shriek sending out an enormous sound wave that penetrated the audio coming from the Troopers' helmets.
"Good lord that noise!" Kaitlin shouted covering her ears in the process. As the shriek died down, the insecticide used this opportunity to lay out the trio in short order.
"This is the worst time to be dealing with this bug brain," said J.B. The trio resumed battle each having a share of. Unfortunately, this came with the expense of their health bar being depleted from their meter. This gave an opportunity for the creature to unleash a series of laser beams that blasted the VR Troopers back onto the ground.
"There just isn't any backing down from this insect," Kaitlin said clearly frustrated by the result.
"Only one thing left that comes to mind." Ryan retrieved his Lightning Saber that he dropped prior channeling enough energy needed to unleash his finishing attack. The delivering blow proved to be a success in the destruction of the Cicada themed robot.
"Take that tin head," he muttered beneath his helmet. Unfortunately, the celebration wouldn't last when the timer from the detonator reached zero. As the device went off in front of them, the simulation concluded thereafter. The gang would immediately find themselves back in the lab feeling some slight dizziness from the machine's aftereffects.
"Dude I was so close. That freaking Cicada monster had to get in the way," Ryan whined removing his visor helmet in the process.
"Not bad, it's a slow start but we're getting there. With plenty of training, you three will eventually get the hang of this simulation," the professor provided them with a bit of critique.
"That stealth portion in the mission was brutal. Having one of the detainees alert the Skugs just when we had momentum derailed us like that," Kaitlin commented upon reflection based from the simulation.
"Those foot soldiers were on par compared to the Skugs we fought in this reality," J.B said.
"The level designed in that training requires more than just pure physicality. It requires strategic thinking to evade those soldiers on guard," Horatio clarified.
"Good point. If only that creature hadn't distracted us, we would've diffused the bomb right then and there. Splitting the team up was a mistake," Ryan ranted holding his head in frustration.
"Look, at the end of the day, we gave it our best shot," Kaitlin spoke up. "That simulation was something I didn't quite expect to be so hard."
"I suppose you're not going to count what happened at the Expo awhile back?" Ryan argued much to Kaitlin's intolerance of her friend's attitude.
"Hey just because I haven't had plenty of fighting experience doesn't mean I'm useless," Kaitlin defended.
"Guys," J.B chimed in to prevent any animosity between his teammates. "The number one thing we need to be concern about is our ability to coexist as a team. Right now arguing would be the last thing weighing on our minds."
The professor agreed. "J.B is right. Crossworld City will fall in shambles if neither you three can remain civil. We have to make sure to coordinate our attack properly," he said.
"From how that training went down, it's pretty clear we're going to need a leader," Kaitlin went on for the record.
"I think we're already looking at him," Ryan said turning his focus towards J.B.
"Come on guys. I had to play mediator to make sure you two got along," J.B hesitated to comply.
"As a longtime psych professor, it's important to have a strong sense of leadership who can get their students to listen accordingly," Horatio commented.
"It sounds fair enough. If one of us is going to lead, we'll all have to agree on something," Kaitlin said.
"What do you suppose we should do?" J.B wondered.
"Simple, we do this the old fashion way. Let's say it all comes down to a game of rock, paper, and scissors," Kaitlin said throwing out a suggestion she offered.
"I'm game. This should be a piece of cake," Ryan said cockily.
"Remember what Tao said to us when we were kids? 'Confidence is wise but it's not wise to be overconfident'," J.B provided Ryan with some friendly advice.
"How could I forget?" Ryan remarked. To that end, the Troopers gathered extending out their arm for a game of rock, paper, and scissors. Following a series of different combinations, it would be a matter of time before J.B managed to outdo Ryan and Kaitlin with his scissors prevailing over their paper.
"Talk about a landslide effort," Kaitlin commented upon review.
"Come on now that was just luck," J.B said denying the end result.
"That was a fair and square play. It seems J.B will be taking the mantle as leader of the VR Troopers." Horatio said as it boiled down to a final verdict.
"And to think this game wouldn't be much of a challenge. So much for my big mouth," Ryan replied regretfully in regards to his cocky nature.
"We'll here for you J.B, every step of the way," Kaitlin reassured.
"One other thing I need to address from you three." Professor Hart directed the Troopers over to the viewing screen displaying an image of handheld devices colored in red and blue.
"As you recall last time, I had been working on these devices to make sure the VR Transmitter are fully operable. They will come in handy even during the most difficult challenges." From the screen, a sample model is shown with a diagram that contains the key functions on the device.
"Is it a physical item we should have at all times or is it automatically encoded in our arsenal?" Ryan asked.
"Although I originally intended to provide you with such, I realized with today's world of technology that your phones are reserved for that purpose. In your virtual forms, the Transmitter is implanted as part of your suits' data that you can use to communicate with each other during battle," Professor Hart explained.
Kaitlin observed the model on screen while coming up with a conclusion. "No offense but it looks tacky."
"I've been experimenting with the device for some time now. But I can assure you it will all be worth it in the end," Professor Hart said with an optimistic look on his face.
While the Troopers utilized this time to reflect on their training, the sounding ring tone came echoing from Ryan's back pocket.
"Let me guess. You have errands to run to?" Kaitlin wondered.
"My mom sent me a text. I need to stock up on more paint supplies by the hardware store," Ryan informed them.
"Take it easy out there Ryan," J.B said as he along with Horatio and Kaitlin watched him exit the laboratory.
"Well what do you know? I have a lecture coming up in a brief bit. I'd better grab my things from the house," the professor said.
"We don't mind lending you a ride. That way you wouldn't have to spend money calling an Uber," Kaitlin insisted in lending him a hand.
"Thank you for the offer but I just got off the phone with my wife. She'll be on her way here soon enough," Horatio said otherwise.
"It's fine. We just thought we do something noble for you," J.B said showing his endorsement towards Kaitlin's offer.
"You two have been so kind," Horatio provided with a compliment.
"Thanks Professor," Kaitlin said. Along with Horatio, the couple prepared to exit the lab living off their normal day as usual.
Over in the Virtual World, a grueling battle ensued inside a stadium with a capacity crowd on hand. A soldier themed robot clad in camouflage outfit with military based boots fought off a number of combatants per match. This was in the midst of an exhibition round - a tune up match to showcase the talent that the league had to offer. Finishing the opponent off with its signature Laser Rifle, the crowd stood in ovation cheering for their hometown combatant. The winning combatant raised its arms in celebration of a job well done. Meanwhile, this gave the commentator their cue to announce the fallout from the match that went down.
Excuse me ladies and gentle bots. Combax has done it yet again in his undefeated streak of a miraculous 98-0 record. Talk about destroying the competition here but who can stop this creature? We're near that milestone of 100 wins. It's not a question of if but WHEN that will happen, but talk about a miraculous effort from both fighters. Thank you for watching and have a great night everyone.
By the sky box located on the upper deck of the crowd, Grimlord alongside General Ivar served as spectators observing the action unfold. Giving their first impressions, the Wizard of Darkness realized the potential coming from the winning combatant.
"General Ivar, you really brighten my day bringing me here. It's not very often I would be feeling so lively in this world," Grimlord complimented him on that regard.
"I'm very flattered your master. Combax is such a great friend of mine I even trained with him when we started out in training camp," Ivar mentioned.
"It's quite a solid showing of his. I suppose you know anyone working in the promotion that could send us his demo reel?" Grimlord said on behalf of his request.
"A colleague of mine should have it enclosed as an attachment file to transfer over to Icebot's computer. We can take a look at them when we get back," Ivar offered.
Zelton arrived inside the room to check on the action that had reached its miraculous conclusion.
"How disappointing, I missed it all. How did Combax do?" He wondered.
"That shouldn't even be a question. Once again Combax has shown to be a valuable candidate for our group," Grimlord stated in response to the warrior's comment.
"I wouldn't doubt that for sure," said General Ivar. As Combax passed through the aisle and backstage, the mutants stood up from their seats preparing to leave the room.
"I believe this would now be an appropriate time to have word with him," Decimator insisted. Along with Grimlord and company, the army proceeded on out of the Skybox, navigating their way towards the concession stands. As expected, a horde of fans gathered around Combax asking for autographs pertaining to the infamous fighter. Robotically built body guards were present to ensure his safety through the overcrowded patrons in attendance.
Sandwiched between a flock of fans, General Ivar stood across from Combax before signaling for his attention.
"Combax, long time no see," he said startling his former apprentice.
"Ivar, it's so good to see you," Combax replied exchanging a series of formal handshakes. "I am flattered to see you all here in attendance tonight. Being the reigning Virtual World Champion just shows how far I've come since I started competing in this sport."
Zelton spoke up. "You talk about progress? You're on the verge of reaching a milestone record as far as being undefeated is concern. Not a lot of fighters have the kind of fortitude that you do."
Combax responded using his humble voice. "Well I am very amused by your words. At the end of the day, I have to hand it to my training coach and lifelong friend who inspired me to be the best I can be," he said eying directly over to General Ivar.
"What a pleasure indeed. But after how impressive you were in that ring, we thought we could take this moment to grant you a special offer this evening," Ivar commented.
"Interesting, what kind of offer did you have in mind?" Combax asked as a result of a lack of clarity.
"Where things are going with the mutant expansion into the Real World, we've come across some setbacks that may prohibit us from immigrating," Grimlord stated. "Just recently, a group of metal armored fighters injured one of our comrades claiming to be the protectors of Virtual Reality. But they have awoken from their slumber to eradicate mutants like us from stepping foot into the real world. My army of robots has been scouting brute fighters to destroy the triad known as the VR Troopers."
Combax took as much thought into this to realize the consequence should he go through with the deal. "You expect for me to accept this offer and fight by your side? Is this the reason why you were in attendance to begin with?"
"The Mutant Empire would be honored to include a soldier patriotic in a sense of one who fully embraces their inner individuality. They're not ashamed to accept their heritage, figuring out their place in the world while preserving their family tree throughout the course of time. They fight the good fight willing to stand by his comrades to the bitter end," said Grimlord.
"What do you suppose I get in return if I were to defeat these so called Troopers?" Combax continued to inquire on that regard.
"The VR Troopers contain a special device that is responsible for them transforming in the first place," Grimlord elaborated. "If you were to successfully put them in their place, you will be handsomely rewarded with three Virtualizer pendants. Whether you wish to volunteer is up to you."
"When it comes to competing in the squared circle, I tend to fight my battles with honor and dignity. I am all in for new challengers, even if it means facing each one of them," Combax told him.
"Each of them you say? You may as well be facing the Troopers simultaneously at once," General Ivar clarified.
"If they insist on wiping out the mutant race, they have no idea what I have in store for them," Combax said turning his focus towards Grimlord. "Let me put this into simple words: I accept."
After giving much thought, Combax complied with the deal. Grimlord and Ivar responded with sincere gratification.
"Welcome to our family old friend," said General Ivar extending out a hand for which the soldier themed robot accepted in exchange.
"Zelton, send the Troopers a warning message on Earth. Make sure you trigger the button on the transceiver to let them know about their awaited fight," Grimlord ordered handing him the electronic device over for his lieutenant to use.
"Very well your majesty," Zelton abided.
"The VR Troopers may be around to protect their reality. Once they meet their opponent, they will be sorry that they messed with us," Grimlord mumbled leaving an evil smirk on his face.
As they got settled inside the Crossworld Café that afternoon, J.B and Kaitlin decided to dine in for their lunch break. They took a moment of their day to reflect on their day so far while waiting to be served.
"Oh finally, I haven't had a chance to eat anything since I woke up," Kaitlin mumbled with sheer relief.
"I offered you half of my bagel during breakfast yet you turned it down," J.B said taking a brief sip of water from the table.
"It wouldn't have been a problem if you hadn't told me to hurry out of the house," Kaitlin provided with an excuse.
"Look, I didn't want to be late. I mean seeing my students waiting outside of the dojo when its cold is terrible as it is," J.B defended. Despite his effort, this didn't sit well with Kaitlin.
"Um J.B, it's about sixty one degrees here in California. It's not to the level of cold here as it is compared to certain areas in the country," Kaitlin said.
"I guess that happens when I wake up at 4 AM without doing my daily jog," J.B sighed feeling somewhat stressful based on the past few hours.
"J.B, don't be so hard on yourself. We'll do better next time," Kaitlin reassured.
"I know," J.B replied doing his best to maintain his humility. "It seemed like we were on a roll back there. Having to deal with the crappy A.I from the detainees really affected our pacing."
Kaitlin chuckled. "I guess that's what happens when you're playing video games so constantly. Anytime I watch a Twitch streamer come up short in a level, nine times out of ten they end up breaking their controllers."
"You have a point," J.B said. "In all seriousness, this isn't some game that you play for fun. We're dealing with the real thing here. Now we're Troopers, there's more weighing in our shoulders now. As long as Grimlord continues to churn out his army to destroy the city, people will be out there depending on us.
During their conversation, a waiter approached them by their table to take their order.
What can I get for you today?
J.B and Kaitlin glanced at their menus respectively to make a decision.
"Let me have a rice bowl of veggies with Teriyaki chicken," J.B said before taking a sip of water from a cup.
"I'll have some Spaghetti Pasta and some garlic bread as a side dish," Kaitlin requested. The waiter thanked them while the couple handed over their menus as instructed.
"Look, we'll do fine. That simulation is just a practice run just to help us adapt to the armor suits. The first time we transformed, I had a hard time familiarizing myself with the inventory menu," she continued.
"You didn't do too bad back at Steele Labs," J.B critiqued with a positive response.
"I know for a fact I can do better," Kaitlin said. As the conversation drew to temporary silence, J.B glanced at his Virtualizer worn around the collar of his yellow shirt.
"Just looking at this makes me wonder how prepared are we going up against Grimlord and his army," he said contemplating on where they stand in the war against the mutant race.
"We did manage to put up a fight against Decimator. Even Ryan destroyed Ballistix after the crap they put us through," Kaitlin listed some notable contributions to support the impact they've achieved thus far as VR Troopers. "I have to admit. That training sure was something back there was it?"
"Well," J.B responded trying to come up with the right words. "To be fair, none of us knew what we were getting ourselves into. Whatever creature we dealt with from the rooftop prevented us from diffusing the bomb. We'll have to be aware for whatever tactics they throw on us."
"No kidding," Kaitlin said taking out a book from her backpack. "I've been reading up on those Karate books you lend to me awhile back. I'm glad I looked them over before I considered joining your dojo," she said.
"I wouldn't have forced you to join if you didn't want to. I'm just thrilled you were interested to begin with," J.B concluded.
Failing to admit her shyness, Kaitlin's face blemished red.
"Thanks for believing in me J.B," she provided him with a compliment.
In the midst of their discussion, a food server approached the couple to provide them their ordered meals.
"Thank you," Kaitlin said with a flattering remark. "It's just bizarre with everything since Ryan lost his father. One moment we're having a get together at a gaming convention only to have our brains nearly fried. Next thing you know, we're armored fighting warriors with a bigger responsibility on our hands," she recalled.
"Talk about that sense of shared feeling," J.B said. The couple put their discussion on pause looking to dig into their meals. While preparing to feast, a ring tone startled J.B. Kaitlin ignored the call as she consumed her lunch. J.B observed his text message sent from a familiar acquaintance. Just the ecstatic expression upon his face caught Kaitlin's attention.
"You seem happy," she said watching as her boyfriend stared at his phone.
"I just got a text from Tao. He just made it out of Japan and is on his way back to Crossworld," he explained to her.
"I've seen bits of his Social Media but I never had the chance to meet with him in person," Kaitlin said. "Do you know when his flight should be arriving here?"
J.B scrolled through his series of text messages shortly as he prepared to respond.
"He didn't give me a set date but he said sometime by the end of the week," he said. "If you're not busy, we can pick him up by the airport and you two can interact. If not you can stop by and meet with him during your next seminar."
"Now that I can do," Kaitlin smiled. The Crossworld Chronicle reporter came to a compromise. The couple raised their cups of water before following up with a toast.
Ryan exited out of a local hardware store carrying a bag of tools that he purchased. As he loaded his purchases inside the backseat of his truck, he overheard a terrifying scream coming from the parking lot. The Blue Hawk Trooper hurried over to the scene to come across a customer standing next to an unconscious victim.
"What happened?" He wondered.
"This whole thing was crazy. I was just on my way to my car when I accidentally tripped on something. Next thing you know, I noticed a dead body lying next to me," they replied.
"Did you spot the suspect responsible for the attack? Could you describe what he or she looked like?" Ryan interrogated spewing out a series of questions connected to the crime scene.
"I don't know. There was no one here when I stumbled into this corpse," they answered with honesty to the best of their recollection.
"Listen I'm going to get some help over here. Just go ahead and call for emergency," Ryan ordered. Suddenly, an image of Grimlord appeared on screen projected above the entrance doors.
This is a message to all the folks gathering at this time. Not just one location but I also have the entire live feed scattered all across Crossworld City. Citizens, it has brought to my attention ever since making my arrival here on Earth, there would be a dramatic shift that will impact Mother Nature as you know it. Human beings watching this feed will witness the population skyrocketing to new heights never seen in this place. The Mutant Empire has orchestrated an expansion from the Virtual World into the Real World as part of an expansion where mutants are able to thrive in harmony. I can assure you that to protect you for your own good. In doing so, it would require a bit of 'cleaning up' once they make that successful transition. Either you humans join alongside the Empire into making our unified worlds a haven for Mutiny or shall perish at the hands of our cruelty.
Citizens of Crossworld City crowded the walkways monitoring the hacked news coverage unfold in their own two eyes. Each of them remained confused or concerned over the threatening message transmitted from the satellite feeds.
"Grimlord, you just don't quit do you?" Ryan spoke in a rhetorical manner. During the live hack, Combax chimed in on the screen to provide his input on the news.
For those tuning in at this time, I am a trained and fully armed soldier who has spent a decade competing in the squared circle, undefeated the very instant I first stepped foot. I thirst for competition. Whether it'd be a one on one contest or a gauntlet match where I take on multiple opponents at once, no matter the odds, I am invincible. I have fought for my people here in the Virtual World who has strived to keep the mutant race in unity. But I know for sure that when it comes to being clad in steel, there is no shame in being a robot. I'll fight for my people if my people fight for me. The Mutant Empire vows to make change. For that to happen, we must ban together and let go of our personal differences. Now as we expand into the new world of Reality, we can coexist with no need to start civil wars within the ranks of our race. It is time for a change, and that begins now!
The rest of Grimlord's army cheered on in the background showing their support in the latest of the creature's campaign. Meanwhile, citizens of Crossworld City among many households throughout the rest of the world watched in shock and disbelief. A hate group advocating for the destruction of humanity has left them worried over the potential outcome of the Real World. Could this be the end?
Before I close out my speech, I have a message to send out for the trio they call themselves the VR Troopers. If you're watching this right now, I am declaring a challenge to take on these self-proclaimed defenders of Virtual Reality. The event is held inside Spielban's Stadium located in the Virtual World filled with a capacity crowd of mutants excited to witness the action up close. If you win, not only will my winning streak be broken, but I will proudly retire as a fighter. But if I win, I will strip you away of the one thing that is responsible for their transformations: The Virtualizers! Be prepared for what's coming to you. I will defeat you with honor and that's how we're going to do it.
As Combax concluded his speech, the mutants cheered on once again. Grimlord stepped forward by the podium to finish off the ceremony.
I have awaited this for a very long time. For years, there has been a civil war within the ranks of our mutants fighting for survival in such a small world we had to share in. But that will no longer be necessary. With the mutant expansion in effect, we can all manage to coexist by acquiring a new place of settlement. When it's all said and done, the mutants will reign supreme and human as you know it will cease to exist. This is just the beginning.
The live feed concluded leaving nothing but static on the screen. The citizens of Crossworld City were left mortified based on the events that transpired. Ryan dialed the contact number on J.B's phone to get in touch with him.
"Hey Ryan, what's up?" He asked.
"It's bad news. I'll explain when we get over to the police station," Ryan answered before hanging up the phone.
From the Virtual Dungeon, Grimlord confronted with the soldier based robot congratulating him in completing their objective.
"Excellent work Combax. That message you sent to those VR Troopers should have them concern now they've accepted your challenge," said Grimlord.
"It's a pleasure to be serving you," Combax replied feeling appreciative on behalf of his support.
"You see Grimlord? There is no doubt in my mind he makes a fine built warrior," General Ivar spoke up.
"I had my doubts but I will admit I may have been wrong about him," said Grimlord. "The Troopers will pull out all the stops to ensure our army is put to rest. When you succeed, this battle in the arena is going to solidify you as the greatest fighter that has graced both realities."
"Humble me. I do not wish to use this as a means of praising myself," Combax replied.
"Master Grimlord, he is very opposed to letting the mentality of fame getting through to his head. Competition is great, and having him be open to obstacles is his way of continuing his will to fight," General Ivar took into account.
"What do you suppose I have to gain by retrieving those Virtualizers? Aren't you powerful enough to take them down if you wanted to?" Combax asked.
"What a nice set of questions you have," Grimlord said. "With your victory, it will signify a message that the mutants are a special group of species that have a place in life. I could be out in the field to do battle. But my soul could only sustain so much energy being inside of a human's vessel. Therefore my participation remains in minimal at best."
General Ivar chimed in. "You should be grateful to be collaborating with the most sufficient army of fighters this empire has ever seen. I, for one, am flattered to be representing your clan."
"I'm willing to give it my all. Let's take this fight to the next level," said Combax.
"Then a fight it will be. Make sure once you defeat the VR Troopers, take away their Virtualizers. We will make damn sure they don't interfere in our long term plan for mutant expansion," Grimlord ordered.
"I won't let you down sire," Combax said bowing to his new servant.
"Thank you for your time. Our fellow Skug soldiers will happily escort you to your room," Grimlord spoke in a formal manner. A pair of Skugs directed the soldier out from the throne room while navigating through the hallway.
"I'm grateful that you managed to recruit him into the fold," Ivar complimented.
"The world needs to realize that when it comes to battles, there are times when you have to resort into bending the rules. I need to acquire their Virtualizers by any means necessary. For that to happen, we must make sure the VR Troopers are at their most vulnerable," Grimlord instructed.
"With all due respect, this is not what Combax had in mind when he agreed to work with us. He will be dissatisfied if he finds out how he managed to defeat the Troopers with much ease," said General Ivar.
"I couldn't care less. Combax will have a massive paycheck on his hands when he puts an end to those meddling Troopers," Grimlord grunted. "When the time comes, navigate the target of those humans possessing the Virtualizers. We'll deploy the Skug soldiers to hold off the Troopers for as long as possible. By wearing out their energy, they won't be in full strength in time for their fight with Combax."
Upon hearing the response, General Ivar began to feel somewhat on the fence behind Grimlord's decision. As much as he'd do anything to take out the Troopers, the main subject concerning his companionship with Combax would be factored in.
"General, is there a problem?" The creature asked.
"No sir," Ivar said gazing at Grimlord with a straight face.
"Very well then," As their conversation concluded, the General exited the throne room leaving Grimlord in solitaire as of this moment.
"The VR Troopers may be around to defend their precious world. By the time Combax takes them out of the equation, I can finally resume my duty to expand my empire," said Grimlord leaving a sinister grin that lurked upon his face.
Accompanied by J.B, Kaitlin exited out of her red Mazda vehicle from the parking lot of the Crossworld City Police Headquarters. Upon entering the building, they find Ryan interacting with the victim providing thanks for his kindheartedness. As the conversation concluded, the couple approached their companion.
"Ryan, thank goodness you're okay," Kaitlin said relieved of seeing her friend safe and sound.
"I couldn't have word it any better," he said embracing the hug offered from Kaitlin.
"What happened just now? I tried to access the internet on my phone but the server crashed along the way," J.B wondered.
"Grimlord and crew managed to hack into the newsfeed. Apparently, they had a new recruit in their team to challenge us in a sanctioned bout this coming week," Ryan explained.
"What do you mean by a sanctioned bout? I figured he would orchestrate a plot to destroy the city by all means," Kaitlin said seemingly puzzled by the villain's motive.
"Did they mention the location exactly where we plan to battle?" J.B asked.
"It's at a stadium that is not part of this world but somewhere within Grimlord's realm," Ryan told them.
J.B and Kaitlin took a moment to put the pieces to the puzzle when it gave them the clue.
"The Virtual World," J.B implied.
"All I know is this sanctioned bout they've booked us in is being broadcast throughout both parallel worlds. They have a robot named Combax that's been undefeated over there since he debuted in the promotion," Ryan continued. He took a glance at a troubled family saddened upon hearing the news of losing a loved one behind. A police agent had approached them enough to provide them with comfort in the wake of an untimely tragedy.
"Dear lord. At the rate this is going, there's no way of knowing when exactly they will strike next," Kaitlin said having nothing but sympathy with the family.
"Judging from that look, there seems to be more that went on," J.B said observing the concern expression illuminating from Ryan's face.
"When they announced the match taking place, it also came with a stipulation," Ryan told him.
"Wait so does this robot wants to fight us head on? I mean, as opposed to attacking us when we least expected?" Kaitlin asked.
"I know, that's what surprised me to hear," Ryan empathized. "To think we're just getting off the ground as Troopers. Now there is another creature out there that may pose a threat to us, and I don't like the sound of that."
J.B took a moment to take in all of the information provided.
"For all the times I've been playing Metal Fighters, Combax was such a pain of a boss to beat," he said.
"If he really believes in fighting us fairly, why would he be working for Grimlord? This is the same guy that nearly killed everyone in the fire," Kaitlin pointed out.
"Yeah but the sad truth is my father fell victim from that incident," Ryan reminded them.
"The fact that some evil avatar would do what he did to him is beyond harsh. I need to refresh my memory and look up to find out more about what Grimlord is," Kaitlin said
"You could always try Wikipedia," Ryan suggested.
"FYI anyone could go up there and edit out information," Kaitlin said responding with a scowl. "I'm going to check out the gaming articles to see what I can scoop up. If I can get arranged a schedule to meet with Strickland about the creation of that character, that would work out great."
Upon conclusion from his interaction with the local family, Lieutenant Combs took notice of their presence as he confronted the trio.
"How are you three friends doing?" He startled them.
"Hey Lieutenant, we just came by to check up to see how Ryan was doing," Kaitlin provided with an excuse for their visit.
"To tell you the truth, I haven't been in this headquarters since my mom took me here for 'Take Your Child to Work Day'," Ryan said.
"Well I want to thank you sir for alerting us when you did. Your mother would be proud to know how much of a helper you are," the lieutenant complimented on that note.
"Believe me this isn't the first time I've done anything of that caliber," Ryan said alluding to a similar incident that involved a stolen wallet. "I'll make sure she knows I'm okay."
Lieutenant Combs overheard audio coming from his earphone.
"If you excuse me, it appears duty calls." Upon conclusion of that brief conversation, he headed off over towards the victim to provide a bit of interrogation in regards to what happened at the hardware store.
"Now that you mentioned her, how has she been lately?" Kaitlin asked.
"She's doing fine just keeping it low key. She hasn't gotten out of the house much after what Grimlord did to her," Ryan said. Just the thought of his mother's abduction haunted him.
"Yeah I don't blame her," J.B replied. "I've never experienced losing a loved one in that kind of manner. I don't want anything like that happened to my family just like what they did to your father."
Nodding his head, Ryan took a moment to appreciate the thoughts and prayers bestowed by his two childhood companions.
"What would I do without you guys?" He responded with a meek smile.
Taking a glance into her phone, Kaitlin went into her contacts menu to communicate with Professor Hart.
"We should contact the professor. We'd be better off conducting more research on what we're getting ourselves into," she said.
"Good idea Kaitlin," J.B responded sealing approval of this option. As the trio exited the headquarters, they headed over to their respective vehicles to set a course for their destination.
The Troopers arrived at the lab to provide some potential leads into the crime scene that occurred from the hardware store. Horatio gathered along with the three to provide them with the additional support they need.
"It's no surprise how Grimlord managed to hack into the newsfeed. The fact he and his accomplice threatened us to relinquish our powers is just goes to show you how ambitious he can be," said Ryan.
"I've hardly played any of the Metal Fighters games growing up. What could you tell us about Combax?" Kaitlin asked.
From the computer widescreen, Professor Hart pulled up the robot's profile from his database which displayed an image along with extensive information on his back story.
"He is an armed military built robot sworn to fight the good fight. Combax spent most of his life training in combat alongside General Ivar to thwart off opposing factions that swore to take over their land. Between mentor and student, they developed a mutual bond that has since been carried on to this day," Horatio explained. The professor continued to tap into the database unraveling more background information in regards to Combax and his affiliation with the promotion.
"Wait the Virtual Combat Federation? So he's been taking part in that company since he retired from active duty?" Ryan wondered with curiosity.
"The VCF is an unsanctioned fighting promotion consisting of trained robots competing for the ultimate grand prize: The Virtual Combat Federation World Championship. Throughout its existence, the VCF is considered by fans as a development brand to elevate skilled combatants as they are then promoted to serve as a member of the Mutant Empire. Notable mutants that have competed in the promotion include Combax, Zelton, Decimator, and Ballistix to name a few," Kaitlin recited the data displayed on screen.
"So Grimlord must have had ties with the federation? That must explain how he managed to recruit some of these aforementioned creatures," J.B said.
"Coming from a casual gamer, I don't remember how tough Combax was. Even on easy difficulty, he just knew exactly every move the player would make," Kaitlin pointed out.
"There was a magazine I read growing up about fans' complaints on the robot's AI difficulty. I read a thread on the game's message forum that many folks have tried to find glitches and cheats on a simpler way to defeat him. It took me over twenty tries to execute this trick and wear out his health meter," J.B commented on the matter.
"It took you that many attempts? I beat him after seven tries using no glitches what so ever. Granted he was a pain in the rear but still not as bad as folks make it out to be," Ryan said.
"Throughout his tenure, Combax has remained undefeated. Since his debut, he has racked up a record of 98 wins and zero losses. Although he had competed in one match that ended in a draw, he has yet to suffer a clean loss," Kaitlin continued to gloss through the details from his database.
"Knowing how formidable of an opponent he is, I'm not sure if even the three of us could stand toe to toe against him," J.B said taking into account of the data they could gather.
"Well this is quite reassuring for a leader to say," Ryan scolded. It was that instant in which tension began to fume J.B.
"Guys stop. This is exactly what Grimlord would want to see us as," Kaitlin intervened in attempt to reason with her teammates.
"We all need to play our part to stop these mutants by working as a cohesive unit," said Professor Hart. "I understand we're still getting accustomed to everything. Combax is serious business and it's going to take group effort and effective strategy to stop him."
"Yeah and factoring in the possibility of losing our powers. Next thing you know, our tenure as Troopers will be over before it began," Ryan said in frustration of the obstacle stacked in front of them.
"I won't let that happen as long as our heads are in check," J.B reassured.
"Professor, how do we get to the Virtual World? Grimlord mentioned that invitation of us traveling over there to face Combax," Kaitlin recollected from the transmission they watched from earlier ago.
"Before Tyler's absence, he and I have been constructing chamber pods that could be used to transfer one person from our reality into the Virtual World," Horatio explained. "This process would allow for your bodies to preserve as your minds are transferred into an astral plane far enough to reach the other side of the world."
"So we'll all be under some sort of coma as a result?" Kaitlin asked looking to clarify.
The professor nodded in response. "Think of it like an out of body experience. You three will remain in cryogenic sleep until you manage to return safely into the real world."
The trio gazed at one another pondering in regards to the scenario lied in front of them.
"We'll agree to disagree. Let's do what we can to rid us of this army built robot. When the time comes, we'll be ready to take him head on," J.B encouraged to his friends.
"I hope so," Ryan grunted. From there tensions rose among everyone inside the laboratory. As J.B and Ryan remain on rocky terms, Kaitlin couldn't tolerate to witness her teammates in the situation they're in.
Later that evening, J.B rolled back and forth tucking himself in bed. The day hadn't been all full of sunshine for the VR Troopers' leader. The more emotions that kept piling up on him, the higher his blood pressure intensified. J.B rolled back and forth in bed witnessing a dream sequence he wished he could escape. He spent struggling to deal with an alarming number of Skug soldiers in his path. It didn't help matters to see Ryan and Kaitlin fighting for their dear life shouting his name in desperation. The deck had been stacked which left the team backed into a corner. As they attempted to destroy the Silver Samurai, J.B's eyes lit up in terror. His heart pounded as if he witnessed this moment unfold up close and personal. Just to witness him and his comrades at their most vulnerable saw J.B's confidence at an all time low. It was that triggering emotion he refused to admit to anyone including him truly.
At the Tao Dojo the following morning, J.B monitored his students in the middle of their exercise. He glanced at everyone from the top row down ensuring they were performing the routine efficiently. Of the many students in attendance, Kaitlin followed suit maintaining focus from the exercise demonstrated by their teacher.
"Come on guys keep it up," J.B instructed. Unfortunately for them, they were on the verge of fatigue following the extensive workout.
"Great job everyone. Let's take a fifteen," he continued. The rest of his students took a brief intermission to give themselves a breather.
"Whew thank goodness. Are you sure that was a warm up or a drill disguised as a warm up?" Kaitlin panted placing her hands on her hips.
"This workout helps you control your physical reflexes and greatly enhances your cardio," J.B explained. "We'll need to have all the training we can get if we're going to stop Grimlord and his cronies."
"One thing is for sure," Kaitlin remarked taking notice of her boyfriend's demanding attitude. "Is everything okay? You seem to be acting a bit strange as of late."
"Let's say I had a rough night getting back to sleep," J.B said doing all he could to hide his true feelings.
"I know how much of a pain that can be," Kaitlin took to empathy.
"You're doing fine. Just need to make sure you work on your flow and you'll get the hang of that technique," J.B commented with his feedback.
"I appreciate your advice," Kaitlin said. "Listen I know I shouldn't let personal stuff get in the way of all this. Between you and Ryan from the other day, don't let that get in the way of your teaching."
"And I suggest that you don't lecture your instructor on how to feel," J.B advised as a response to his student's remarks. Such a negative tone of voice coming from his mouth made it rather uncomfortable for Kaitlin to hear.
"It doesn't have to be this way," she said. Despite her good intentions, an attempt at reasoning failed to convince J.B's attitude otherwise.
"If you're dedicated to put as much time and energy learning about Karate, Tao Dojo is here to reinforce that philosophy. Nothing else," he said reminding Kaitlin of her purpose behind training in Martial Arts.
"I get that," she replied taking a brief pause to elaborate on the matter. "I just don't want to see you two get into a scuffle down the road. We've known each other for so long I can tell when you're not acting like yourself. Please J.B."
"That's Sensei Reese you mean," J.B corrected her. "Second of all, I'm doing what's best for our class. Just teaching them the importance of Karate and giving them the shot of adrenaline they need to keep practicing until they get it. While I don't mean it in a literal sense, the point of the matter is we're going to face challenges in our lives. Not in the battle field but internally also."
Kaitlin nodded. "I'm all in for constructive feedback. Just don't overboard with the cynicism alright?"
J.B got to the gist of things. "Look, it's already been hectic these past few days. Right now is not the best time to get caught up with our personal soaps. End of discussion."
The conversation would end abruptly as J.B spent the duration of his break secluding himself inside of the accounting office. With the door locked, it became apparent he needed time alone to reevaluate his mood.
As fifteen minutes were up, J.B returned to the mat directing his students their undivided attention.
"Alright listen up. So far you guys have been outstanding. It can be a hunger for those dedicated to work on their craft. No matter how fast or slow, we all move at our individual pace. But this is not to divide the line between superiority and inferiority. In order for us to keep our bodies moving forward, we need oxygen or the ability to breathe. We get most of our oxygen from the ocean. It's pretty basic of a fact we need plenty of that in order to survive. Trees use energy from the sunlight absorbing CO2 from the air and water in a process called photosynthesis. Who could tell me what happens next?" he elaborated as he approached the main entrance door. The students remained silent unsure of the answer. However, Kaitlin raised her hand looking to answer that question.
"The plants combine water and carbon dioxide into glucose and release the oxygen into the air?" She volunteered to respond.
"Good job, you see photosynthesis plays a factor for how we produce our food. For that to work there's one source on this planet we're in that needs it most, the sun," J.B continued. "Speaking of the sun, I hope you brought your bottles along. We're going to exit out of the dojo you entered and we are going to head up to Crossworld Forest and perform some laps. This isn't a race by any stretch. For us to stand together, we must work together to burn our calories but more importantly, to maintain a physical, healthy shape. Alright everyone let's head out."
Needless to say, J.B directed his students out of the dojo for extensive outdoor exercising. Kaitlin would be the last student to leave the facility observing the demeanor from her boyfriend's eyes.
"Kaitlin, are you ready?" He asked. Kaitlin stood still thinking about the way J.B acted towards her from earlier.
"Ready as I'll ever be," she said hesitantly. J.B locked the door from behind with his keys as he exited out onto the parking lot. Little did they notice that a drone was seen lurking from above the dojo, watching their every move.
The day rolled along. J.B performed a series of laps around Crossworld Forest along with his students. Passing by the many trees that surrounded them, it was an extensive exercise that took every ounce of resilience in their fiber. The humidity of the temperature played a significant factor in further exhausting everyone in sight. As a result, the Tao Dojo students including Kaitlin were drenched in sweat.
"Come on, let's keep moving!" J.B encouraged providing them with some support by clapping along.
"J.B, I'm not one to complain. We've been jogging for almost half an hour," Kaitlin said shedding light to the situation at hand.
"Just hang in there Kate. I went through the same drill when I started getting into martial arts," J.B replied. Kaitlin sighed overwhelmed and agitated based on his treatment among his teammate. Taking a glimpse at the rest of his Tao Dojo pupils, it was clear they were not benefiting from the activity.
"Excellent work guys, you can all relax now," he said as the students proceeded to grab some beverages. For awhile, Kaitlin had given J.B his fair chance to reevaluate his attitude. The more it intensified became a clear indicator she could not tolerate it any longer.
"J.B, what has gotten into you today? From the way you've been treating us, it's not like you to come across like a self-centered jackass," Kaitlin pointed out.
"Don't you dare throw a hissy fit at me," J.B snapped.
"How is that be possible despite the fact we're working our butts off? Because it's certainly not doing us any favors," Kaitlin argued taking her frustration towards him. "Look, I'm not one to vent at anyone even if it's my boss or in this case, my Karate instructor. But don't forget I am one of your students, and treat me as such."
"You don't understand," J.B said much to Kaitlin's chagrin.
"I'll do anything there is to learn. But not like this. Just because we're together doesn't mean you have to turn it into a boot camp. If that's how you envision it, maybe it was a mistake joining your dojo," she vented. As she walked off from him in disgust, J.B folded his arms conflicted over his unusually foul attitude. Though his heart may have been in the right place, it didn't help matters that his excessive workload has come with the expense of overwhelming his students. He couldn't believe what he had witnessed. At the same time, he felt he could've handled the situation better.
From the skyline, Air Striker surveyed the Crossworld Forest to navigate the location of the VR Troopers. Within moments of flying above the area, he takes notice of Kaitlin's presence as she gathers with the rest of her Tao Dojo classmates.
"Grimlord, it appears I've spotted one of them in sight," Air Striker communicated with his commanding boss on the whereabouts.
"Excellent work Air Striker," Grimlord replied. "On my mark, prepare to fire off the missiles. I'll send out the Skug soldiers to have them disguised as Karate students. Make sure that even if they fall short, the real purpose is to wear out the Troopers as much as possible."
"Affirmative," Air Striker proceeded on command.
Kaitlin stood within the shades beneath a tree. The day had been exhausting from the excessive heat wave around her. She thought of what she said towards J.B and how relentless of him to take advantage of his students continuing to devote their time learning about Martial Arts. Something seemed pretty off about him, she thought. The simulation they experienced at the lab would be a practice drill to prepare for any potential battles that lies ahead. With a flare of determination in her eyes, Kaitlin looked to put the pieces to the puzzle.
Just when she gathered with her classmates, it wouldn't be long when they overheard echoes of missiles shooting from above. Smokes shrouded the area they were surrounded. The students of Tao Dojo gasped for air unable to breathe.
Meanwhile, surveying miles from the explosion, Ryan jogged his way through the trail when he spotted large amounts of debris ascending into the sky. His face dropped in awe of what he witnessed.
"Oh no," he muttered rushing his way to the scene. By the time they cleared out, J.B and Kaitlin opened their eyes figuring out the attack that unfolded.
"What's going on?" J.B arrived outside from the welcome center to spot the location of the blasts as it occurred. As the debris dissolved, he hurried over to check up on his students.
"Is everyone okay?" He spoke with concern over the state of their condition.
"What was that?" Kaitlin wondered the same thing. She observed the heavens in search of the potential cause.
"Well whatever that was, it's gone now," J.B reassured. "Come on guys let's head back!"
Utilizing his leadership skills, J.B attempted to lead his students through the trails of the forest. While Kaitlin proceeded, the rest of the crew thought otherwise.
"Um J.B," she said leaving the couple suspicious of their command. Standing with their legs tucked together, the Karate students made an instantaneous transformation revealing themselves as the Skugs.
"These are the last people we want to confront with," J.B said. Getting into their fighting positions, he and Kaitlin fought off the foot soldiers taking out every last one they see. Even with the advantage, the Skugs refused to surrender.
"You've got to be joking," Kaitlin mumbled. The couple continued to defend themselves as each remaining foot soldier fought on. Combining with the grueling humidity, this immense weather played a factor in draining out their energy.
"Are you hanging in there Kate?" J.B spoke with concern.
"Barely," Kaitlin replied overwhelmed by her surroundings. Rinse and repeat she continued to hold her ground. However, the irresistible odds combined with the excessive heat greatly reduced her ability to battle at her full potential.
Kaitlin fell to the ground. Scorched with bruises scattered around her face, fear triggered her eyes. She could feel the beat of her heart intensified witnessing the possibility of death lurking towards her. J.B attempted to come to her aid but the foot soldiers circled him at every move. As Kaitlin remained cornered, Ryan took out the Skugs from behind rescuing her in the process.
"Are you okay?" Ryan asked lending her a hand.
"I couldn't be any better," Kaitlin said accepting his assist as she pulled herself up from the patched dirt. The fight resumed but with additional support from a friend enhanced their chances of triumph. While another Skug came approaching towards Ryan, she retaliated with a kick to its midsection for him to collide with its teammate. More of its comrades marched forth. By performing a double team kick, Ryan and Kaitlin managed to be one step ahead of their opponents' move. Much like with the previous pair of Skugs, they both disintegrated in an instant.
"J.B, these guys have a weakness. Knock them against one another and they should disintegrate," Kaitlin advised him.
"Right on," J.B said. Proceeding as followed, the Karate instructor took care of the remaining Skugs. Much like the rest, the foot soldiers met their inevitable demise.
"Whew that's the last of them," Kaitlin panted looking to regain her breath.
"Thank goodness you're here Ryan. Are you two feeling alright?" J.B asked.
"I was doing my daily morning jog when that explosion startled me," Ryan told them.
"Good thing you came. I hate to admit but those guys really packed a punch," said Kaitlin. While the couple successfully held their own against them, another Karate student of theirs alerted J.B to alert them of importance.
Guys, we need help!
J.B and Kaitlin followed the Karate student over to find the rest of his classmates roped around to a tree branch.
"What the Hell?" Kaitlin mumbled. The three would approach the scene unraveling the ropes binding the captives.
Thank goodness you found us. I was beginning to think we would be goners," one of them spoke up.
"It's a good thing we were here to help," Ryan said. "I'm surprised they didn't annihilate you when they had the chance to."
"Being the shape shifters they are, I have a feeling we were being set up," J.B said taking into account of the unexpected ambush.
"Yeah but my question is why?" Kaitlin wondered with curiosity.
"Hey guys are you alright? I saw that explosion back there," Emerging from the vast of the forest, Ryan confronted alongside J.B, Kaitlin, and the rest of Tao Dojo's students.
"Skugs impersonated as some of our students. Luckily, we took them out but that fight man," J.B said exhausted from a hard fought battle.
"Did you get a good look on who may have fired at us?" Kaitlin questioned.
"It was Air Striker, and my instinct says that Grimlord had some involvement in all of this," Ryan mentioned.
"Everyone, listen up," J.B commanded while directing his students with some undivided attention. "I know you guys are sweating out here. It's been an exhausting day. Stay fluid with as much water you can replenish. If you didn't bring any, there's a vending machine filled with beverages on up ahead. We'll head back to the dojo and call it a day."
Upon his orders, the gang prepared to leave the forest on foot. In doing so, J.B contacted the professor from his phone to notify him regarding the attack.
"Professor, one of Grimlord's creatures ambushed us in the forest. They sent out Skug soldiers to wipe out but we're fine," he said.
"Get Kaitlin and Ryan and meet me back at the lab. We can continue our discussion from there," Horatio responded.
"They're with me. We're on our way." J.B said hanging up his phone. The Troopers regrouped once more to discuss about the attack that went down.
"They may have gotten the better of us. Something tells me they don't want us in tip top shape," J.B said having a hunch based on Grimlord's orchestrated assault.
"He'll do anything to grab a hold of our Virtualizers," Ryan replied clearly frustrated. "We should really get some water. This humidity is too much to handle if we stick around for long."
"Good idea, I've had a long day," Kaitlin agreed looking around in hopes of finding some nearby vending machine. "Listen I'm going to grab something to drink and I'll meet you back."
"Sure thing," Ryan said. He watched as Kaitlin marched off with a scowl look on her face. Observing from her expression alone left Ryan uneasy in response.
"What's her deal?" He wondered.
"Like she said, it's a long day. Knowing how humid it is, I begin to wonder why I even consider this idea today," J.B said.
"Dude you're acting a bit strange. Even from the cold shoulder Kaitlin gave you, she seemed a bit peeved," Ryan remarked in regards to her behavior.
"I'm just doing my best to educate my students to perform to the best of their ability," J.B told him. "You and I have been training for as long as we've been friends since grade school. It was a lot of exercising and learning to better understand our craft."
Ryan took a glimpse at the students to find them socializing with one another.
"Look, I don't mean to argue. I may not be a Karate instructor, but all I know is when it comes to leadership, it boils down to having faith in your teammates. If I was in your shoes, but I would hate to have to lose my students due to bad mentoring or leadership for that matter," he went in on a confession.
"I have as much faith devoting my time teaching. They'll succeed in their own pace," J.B assured.
"I like to believe that too. Let's just say I'm looking out for a friend," Ryan said. He placed a hand on his friend's shoulder ensuring what he hope would be the best for his lifelong companion. J.B closed his eyes while reflecting every bit of advice bestowed to him by his teammates.
Later that day, the Troopers managed to regroup with Professor Hart at his lab. They took a moment to assess the situation in regards to the ambush from earlier ago. Coming off the heels of an intense bout with the Skugs, the trio began to question Grimlord's motives and his underlying suspicion of a conspiracy that may be plotting against them.
"That fight back there really drained us," said Kaitlin.
"We've only just got started as Troopers and we're dealing with a tough man contest. Let's hope we know what we're up against," Ryan said.
"Fearing the worst is the last thing on our minds. We should have the tools we need to defeat him." J.B spoke with overconfidence.
"Considering how much time we spent taking out Decimator, how prepared are we when we face Combax?" Ryan asked.
"For what I know, he does not tend to hold back even if it means going against his allies," Horatio responded.
"Wait what you're saying that by not holding back means he'll go as far as killing his friends in battle?" Kaitlin wondered somewhat puzzled by the professor's comment.
"I'm afraid so," he said. "When it comes to the Virtual Combat Federation, all competitors are monitored by the league commission to ensure the battles go as accordingly. When they're defeated, they're given a choice to either destroy their opponents or both competitors will suffer the same fate. But just like every fighter in the ring, he gives it his all in his matches, and there's no doubt in my mind he won't go easy on you three."
As anticipation continues to run high, the lights began to flicker around them. Over by the monitor, an image of Grimlord is projected on screen standing in the background of a locker room.
"Well VR Troopers, I hope one of my subordinates managed to send out this preexisting footage as we speak. In just a few hours, the bout between you and Combax will take place inside of a capacity crowd on hand. I advise you make preparations as far as strategy is concerned. Whatever method of transportation you have to get to the Virtual World, be sure to have medical insurance in handy. By the time the match ends, you won't be calling yourselves heroes much longer," he stated.
"He didn't have the audacity to leave us a live feed this time? Some mutant he is," Kaitlin said.
"Easy there tiger," Ryan replied insisting for her to calm down.
Grimlord continued. "The instant you three enter that very ring, there is no turning back. You either fight to live another day or he strips away your powers and expose the people operating behind those armor suits. Combax has trained very hard for this bout knowing what you three can be capable of. I hope your suits are fully charged. Because this will be the last time you will try and mess up with my plans."
Upon finishing his line, the feed cut to an instant static.
"He's really confident about this Combax guy. We should better get going," J.B instructed.
"Strap yourselves over to the VR pods. Your mind will be transferred over to the Virtual World as your physical forms remain here. Think of it as an out of body experience," Horatio advised directing the three over to the said equipment.
"You guys up for this?" J.B asked.
"It's not even a question," Ryan affirmed as did Kaitlin.
"I'll be monitoring your activity during the feed. Assuming this battle is no holds barred, I'll let you in on some techniques when necessary," Horatio guided them.
"Thanks Professor," Kaitlin said. The Troopers approached the chamber pods. Tucking their bodies inside the hatch, they laid their heads by the cushion seats, closing the pod doors. Professor Hart dialed the pass code on a keypad to reduce the temperatures inside the pods. With their eye lids shut and their bodies straightly aligned, the trio began to ease tension over themselves. By the time they awoken, they found themselves standing in the center of the ring - a clear indicator that they've arrived inside Spielban Stadium. The roaring audience of cheers echoed throughout the venue in anticipation for the upcoming match.
"Welcome VR Troopers, I've been looking forward to this bout for quite some time." Standing across from them lurked Combax as he confronted the metal clad heroes.
"So you're the creature Grimlord was mentioning to us about," Kaitlin presumed.
"Let's say I'm doing a bit of a favor for him. From what I've been hearing about you three, it doesn't help that the Virtual World banished you from history," said Combax. With the audience in support for the soldier based robot, his endorsement left the trio trying their best to hide their intimidation.
"I don't know what you're talking about. Considering whom you're aligning yourself with, having Grimlord and his creatures conquering our world won't bring long lasting peace," J.B stepped in to defend their credibility.
"How very sincere you are with your motivation speeches," Combax said continuing to belittle the team.
"You seem pretty confident laying out all the chips to prove you can defeat us. That won't be the case," Ryan assured.
"I admire your optimism. But let's see how we fare by the time the dust settles," Combax replied positioning himself in fighting stance. The VR Troopers followed suit as their match got underway.
As the bell rang, the trio started on offense laying hands on combat against Combax. J.B struck with a few fists followed up by an amateur wrestling hold. Combax fought out of it as both competitors return to their feet. J.B swung out a right arm but the robot countered it with a combination of overhand chops followed up by a Judo hip toss. Kaitlin and Ryan avenged their fallen leader striking back with their own series of punches. Combax retaliated countering every move attempted before taking out both Troopers in the process.
"We're just getting warmed up." Kaitlin summoned her laser blaster firing shot after shot at Combax. As a means of self defense, the robot dodged every blast that came at him. Combax approached the Red Sheriff swiping away the weapon from her hand. Utilizing this method to his advantage, he ensued to fire away the exact pistol used against her.
"Pulling that trigger against me was a mistake. You should have seen it coming," Combax said.
Ryan stepped up to try his luck. He resorted to a series of Karate Kicks to wear down the military themed robot. The blue armored Trooper used a laser blaster of his own setting off more shots towards his opponent. He followed it up as he leaped up in the air with an aerial kick to his torso. Combax kneeled on the mat taking a moment to regain his composure.
"You may have a lot of will. But this bout is far from over." The robot purged forth managing to receive the upper hand at Ryan. With an emphasis on weapon usage, he unveiled his laser assault rifle, firing numerous shots right at the Trooper. Ryan fell to the mat as a result of the enduring blows suffered at the hands of Combax.
"Ryan," Kaitlin cried lending her friend a helping hand.
"Thanks Kate," he complimented her with the support.
"Don't worry I got this." Resuming the fight, J.B went on the physicality landing some variety of kicks in hopes of weakening his opponent. He kicked the rifle away from Combax's hands resuming hands on combat once again. Juxtaposed with his courage and ambition, the Silver Samurai gave everything he had. However, even at his best, it would not be enough. As a skilled army fighter, Combax fought back on offense assaulting J.B with knuckle punches to the torso. The Silver Samurai stumbled along the mat as a result of the robot's heinous assault.
"If my Laser Rifle won't do the trick, my entrusted dagger will!" Combax pulled out the intended weapon utilizing its might to slash his opponent.
"J.B," Ryan and Kaitlin regrouped with J.B as he rolled on the ground.
"You three have plenty of guts but that won't be enough," Combax taunted the Troopers.
"We're not finished yet. It's time to bring out the cavalry. Lightning Saber Command, now!" Ryan grunted extending out his hand to reveal his saber. He swung his saber towards his opponent laying some damage to the robot. It seemed as though with repeated strikes to the chest that Combax's days may have been outnumbered. But neither of Ryan's attacks could faze him. Just before Ryan could deliver the final combo, the robot countered using the saber as leverage to dethrone the blue armored Trooper.
"Ryan!" J.B exclaimed. Checking over the condition of his fallen friend, he went all out on the undefeated combatant channeling his emotions coming from the Silver Samurai. J.B ascended above the mat attempting a flying thrust kick but Combax caught him by the leg. Seemingly having the advantage, J.B countered back with an Enziguiri blow to the head knocking Combax to his knees. He capitalized on the momentum using a Buzz saw Kick that caused him to stagger around the mat.
"Kaitlin and J.B wield your blasters together and shout the phrase 'VR Double Team Attack!'" Professor Hart communicated from their speakers.
"Kaitlin, are you ready?" J.B wondered. Kaitlin got up from her feet getting in position along with her teammate. With both weapons in hand, they prepared to fire out their latest signature attack.
"VR Double Team Attack" Chanting in unison, they fired their lasers at Combax lying back first on the ring mat. With the smokes scattered throughout the battlefield, it appeared as though the Troopers had prevailed in their bout. Unfortunately for them, this would not be the case.
"If you thought that was the end, you guessed wrong," he said walking pass the amount of debris that shrouded him.
"Damn it, it was too good to be true," Kaitlin mumbled furious by the end result. The impact behind the Troopers' signature attacks left a significant amount of singes all over his bulletproof chest armor.
"This guy won't tolerate defeat. But I'm not done yet," Ryan said charging towards his opponent before ascending from the air to perform one of his signature techniques. "Lightning Hand Command, now!"
As he could fully connect with the move, Combax dodged out of sight. Ryan called off his attack. All of a sudden, a smoke bomb was thrown on the mat creating yet another shroud of fog that surrounded the battlefield. The crowd watched in shock behind the vicious attack coughing up the smolder that scattered throughout the stadium.
"Where did he go?" Kaitlin wondered. The Troopers looked around in hopes of spotting their opponent.
"Troopers, can you hear me?" The professor contacted the trio once more. Static echoed from his audio speakers. Live coverage of the battle in progress would cut abruptly into black. Due to the unprecedented events that unfolded, Horatio would be unable to hear a response.
"He has messed with us long enough. Where in the blazes are you?" Ryan shouted clutching onto his Lightning Saber for self defense.
"This isn't like you Combax. Quit hiding and fight us head on!" Kaitlin demanded. The three stood clockwise from one another circling the area in search of the robot's presence. For awhile, not much progress had been made.
"Don't let your guard down guys. He could pop up at any moment now," J.B encouraged. Before they knew, they began to overhear shots of laser beams firing at every direction. By the time the noise settled down, all seemed silent for the moment.
The VR Troopers remained on guard. As Ryan turned around, Combax made his descent from the smoky heavens, damaging the Trooper's body armor with his knife.
"Ryan!" J.B and Kaitlin shouted in unison. They approached their fallen comrade to ensure his safety.
"Is that all you got? How about I demonstrate to you my method of a counterattack?" Combax placed his knife back in its holster. By retrieving his laser rifle from the ground, he fired his weapon repeatedly setting off numerous explosions that sent the trio flying to the ground.
"This guy is too good," Kaitlin mumbled struggling to crawl back to his feet.
"At this rate, we're going to need a bigger game plan to beat this guy," Ryan said in the midst of the beatings they've sustained.
"That does it. I'm not letting him get the better of us. Laser Lance Command now," J.B extended his hand summoning his Laser Lance in attempt to up one over the robot. Back and forth every physical blow they attempted on one another shook the entire stadium to its core. This meant pulling out all the stops necessary as the intensity ensued between combatants. As J.B prepared to seal the deal, Combax blocked his offense reversing it with a devastating haymaker punch. Such a devastating maneuver created a tear from the torso of his suit. Combax took advantage of this opportunity landing repeated knee strikes to his opponent's jaw. The more blows he sustained, the less of a chance J.B could afford to make a comeback. This gave the military robot the momentum he needed to finish off the match.
"You should learn better than to underestimate a hard fighting robot. Now prepare to witness the brute strength of my power!" Combax loaded his laser rifle inserting a set of gold caliber bullets loaded to his arsenal. While buying some time to charge, the trio wasted no time but to do everything they could to prevent him from pulling the trigger.
"We can't let him fire that thing. Guys ready?" J.B ordered prompting his teammates to use their laser blasters to counteract their opponent's attack. With the right timing and precision, both competitors fired their respective weapons. The Troopers used all of their might to deflect the blast back towards Combax. Despite their fortitude, the robot's usage of the rifle would prevail unleashing a ball of energy that wiped them off the ring mat. As a result, the announcer had no choice but to signal the ring bell.
"No," Kaitlin mumbled. Underneath her helmet lied a facial expression of shock and awe.
"That was pathetic. Even with that effort, I expected much more out of you," Combax said disappointed by the flow of the match. The crowd cheered in celebration as they witnessed their favorite standing tall in victory.
"This is not over." Despite what appears to be a decisive finish, J.B got up insisting on fighting back.
"J.B wait," Ryan shouted.
"I admire your fortitude Trooper. But a loss is a loss." In self defense, Combax set off yet another shot from his rifle. As it fired towards J.B, Ryan and Kaitlin intervened cloaking their bodies like a shield to protect their leader.
"Oh no," J.B muttered witnessing his teammates fall to their demise.
"We had a deal. Surrender your Virtualizers to me at once and I'll spare you," Combax instructed. While lying unconscious, the Blue and Red VR Troopers would revert back into their civilian forms, seizing this opportunity for Combax to retrieve the Virtualizers from their necks.
"Two down, one to go. Surrender your Virtualizer to me at once and I'll spare you along with your friends," Combax instructed. J.B panicked unable to fathom over the aftermath of their defeat.
"Troopers, preparing to abort the mission at 3...2...1" Having regained signal from the live feed, Professor Hart signaled initiating a sequence in which the trio would be transported out of the stadium and back to reality. The hatches opened in which allow for them to slowly step out of the chamber pods.
"Ugh what just happened?" Kaitlin wondered experiencing some fatigue from the simulation.
Ryan reached underneath his shirt collar to notice something important of value is missing. "Guys, my Virtualizer."
Kaitlin took notice having fallen under a similar predicament as her teammate. Only J.B was the exception to this as his Virtualizer remained around the collar of his neck.
