~Season 1, Episode 2:
Leader in Doubt, Part Two~
The Troopers shuddered in shock and awe. Over the past hour or so, they went all out in their sanctioned matchup against a highly trained army robot. Even with the amount of effort, they stood no ghost of a chance against Combax.
Devastated by the loss of their powers, anxiety clouded over the minds of Ryan and Kaitlin. It hadn't been long ago they had been gifted with specially enhanced equipment designed to defend themselves from the volatile forces threatening their world. Just the thought of the unthinkable that could happen would unfold right in front of them.
"What in the world just happened? One moment we were on a roll. Next thing you know, he just ate us up like cold turkey," Ryan said.
"That robot wasn't joking when he claimed he was undefeated in his sport," Kaitlin said reflecting back on their battle from earlier. "Part of me thinks I just woke up from a nightmare."
"One thing I don't get is even with all of our weapons in our disposal, how is it we couldn't defeat him? I mean, it's bad enough they confiscated your Virtualizers," J.B said clearly frustrated from the end result.
"You shouldn't give up hope. Thankfully, you still have yours intact," Horatio reassured.
"I'll say," J.B sighed with relief. "To think not only were they going to strip away our powers. They nearly went as far as trying to destroy us at every cost."
The professor spoke up. "Combax demonstrated a sample of what he can bring to the table. There's a saying that goes along the lines that 'when all seems hopeless, we shall live to fight another day'. There was no way I could afford to have them annihilate you three. To transport you guys back from Virtual World was a blessing. Both realities are in a dire need of protection which is why it's important the VR Troopers are here to maintain balance of power."
"Even if we're unable to transform, the only way we can get our powers back is to book him a rematch. J.B is the only one with a Virtualizer who can take on Combax," Kaitlin pointed out.
"She's right. Where we're at now, Grimlord is only one step closer to remove us from the equation. The last thing I want to think about is what he'll do once he has all of our Virtualizers," Ryan said. As tensions rose, the trio has one shot to undo a situation that may impact their duty to protect their world from potential peril.
"I don't get it. When they went all 'Max Headroom' and hijacked the satellite feed, don't you think we could have gotten a say when it came to issuing his challenge? I feel like there is something they aren't telling us," J.B said laying out his grievance on that regard.
"When it comes to the Mutant Empire, they sometimes tend to orchestrate their plans on such short notice," Horatio continued. "Grimlord is a creature who will not tolerate defeat even if it means resorting to dirty tactics. Either he gets his way or condemns those who defy his authority."
"Knowing what happened last time, I wonder if I will be able to defeat Combax. Even in a 3-on-1 contest wasn't enough somehow," J.B added stirring up a range of emotions that concerned his peers.
"Look, it doesn't matter how all of it went down. What does matter is that we have to make sure he doesn't obtain more power than he already has. This is a risk we're going to have to take," Kaitlin said.
"Is it me or are you're starting to sound more like a leader around here?" Ryan wondered.
"Hey watch your mouth would you?" J.B defended Kaitlin.
"Guys cut it out. This isn't like you two to be going at it," Kaitlin tried to reason with her teammates.
"This is Grimlord we're talking about. As far as I'm concern, a leader should encourage their teammates to try their best to do better at their job," Ryan vented.
"Just for the record I'm working on it," J.B said getting into Ryan's face.
"Enough both of you," Professor Hart chimed in to break up the argument. "It's silly enough to witness two grown adults behaving like children. Right now we need to worry about regaining the Virtualizers and away from the Empire's hands."
"The professor has a point. At this rate, we can't waste any more time arguing about 'who's the leader'. The main thing that matters is if we all agree on the most effective option to get us out of this slump," Kaitlin agreed.
"Even without our powers, how the hell are we going to be able to contribute? Unless J.B has something in mind," Ryan wondered glaring at the face of his teammate.
"Look, this is getting ridiculous. Combax was a credible opponent we weren't even prepared to go up against. If he's able to beat multiple competitors all at once, he won't have any problem facing one opponent in the ring," J.B said venting his frustration on the subject matter.
"There has to be some kind of strategy you can use to beat him," Kaitlin said as she expressed her concern towards J.B.
"Thing is I've never dealt with this kind of pressure before. You guys came so close to be destroyed. I don't want to fall in the same trap as we did back there." The Silver Samurai Trooper felt the strangle hold to witness another similar incident.
"J.B," Kaitlin muttered.
"I need to clear the air for a bit. Besides I wouldn't want to do something I'm going to regret," he told her.
"J.B wait," she attempted to reach out but Ryan insisted to leave him be. Plagued with pessimism, J.B walked out of the discussion with indignity.
"I may not be acting like it but I want to support him too. Right now he just needs to clear his head," he said.
"He hasn't been himself lately. To think it's been a crazy time for all of us would be an understatement," Kaitlin burbled before letting out a sigh.
Meanwhile, Professor Hart got onto his dashboard inputting data from his keyboard to contact the booking committee.
"I can tap into the satellite from our reality that can transmit our signals to the Virtual World. Let's just cross our fingers and pray they'll respond," he said. Within a few seconds, the transmission would prove successful when an anonymous figure cloaked in white armor dressed in a purple robe appeared on screen.
"Well hello my fellow humans. I never thought I see the VR Troopers in their regular forms after that hellacious fight from earlier," he said.
"Who are you?" Ryan asked.
"As the chairperson of the Virtual Combat Federation, it is I, Vexor who is enthralled to get in touch with you at this time," the creature provided them with a formal greeting. "I've been replaying the match as it unfolded. Your Troopers really gave Combax the challenge he was looking for. The instant he annihilated you in front of the audience, it's a no brainer who the superior competitor truly is. The fact you had the gall to somehow escape your demise has me baffled."
"It's one thing to accept defeat. But to go as far as destroying us is pushing the envelope too far," said Kaitlin.
"You may be living in a world filled with laws that determines which actions are deemed legal and illegal. But when it comes to the Virtual World, especially when it comes to my fighting league, one competitor lives and their opponent shall perish," Vexor elaborated.
"I'm afraid you're doing a disservice by sacrificing your own talent just for the sake of financial gain for your brand," Professor Hart spilled out his take on the manner.
"Don't you dare question how I operate my company," the creature argued. "The VCF has spent all of their efforts to provide them with the most entertaining show week in and out. Truth of the matter is the Committee could have sentenced you Troopers for life in the Virtual World. Just imagine having them adapt to an environment filled with terror among everyday violence."
Ryan counteracted. "You are one twisted freak and I don't mean that as a compliment."
"I hate to admit that's what all of my critics tell me," said Vexor taking a hard glance at the gang. "I've noticed you're missing a teammate. I suppose he's feeling remorseful know how disappointed he is of you two."
Kaitlin stepped up. "J.B is a lot stronger on the inside than you realize. Don't jump to conclusions to a person you don't know about."
"I suppose that's fair enough," Vexor complied. "I'll tell you what. Let me speak with my staff members and evaluate the situation. Not just the match itself but any trace of suspicious activity involving both parties involved heading into the bout. I'll be sure to contact you in the coming days and we can sort this whole mess out."
"I find it funny how you stated your world doesn't follow law regulations compared to ours," Horatio called him out. "If that is the case, I had every right to call back my team. Maybe you should let your folks know when to install a device that prevents us from teleporting out of battle."
The chairman blushed. "I must admit it's no wonder why they refer to you as a professor. Our technicians have been hard at work to structure a bio dome that prevents competitors from any means of escape. The next time around, we won't make that mistake."
"...And we won't make that same mistake as long as we come to a compromise," said Ryan.
"I suppose what proposal are you suggesting I may ask?" Curiosity loomed within Vexor's head.
"As far as settling the score is concerned, it's a little thing we like to call a 'rematch," Kaitlin chimed.
"I had a hunch you would mention that," said Vexor. "After all, competition brings out the best in our fighters. Like we've discussed, I will get in touch with our staff and see where we go from there. We will notify you when the time is right." Vexor ended the speech on a more objective take on the circumstance.
"We'll look forward to it," Ryan told him. The feed would cut to static leaving the three to come down to their own reactions. "Well that was quite a Face Time chat was it?"
"I wouldn't mind a sense of humor but this is a serious matter we're dealing with," said Professor Hart.
"Do you think they'll even consider from the way you pulled us out from the stadium?" Kaitlin wondered with curiosity.
"Grimlord won't stop until we're removed from his hit list entirely. Two of your Virtualizers are with him but we still have enough in our arsenal to turn the corner around," the professor reassured.
"But that's IF they'll grant us a rematch," Kaitlin clarified on that regard.
"J.B is our last hope of defense. He'll be ready," Ryan said. Kaitlin closed her eyes in prayer that with the burden of emotions weighing above his shoulders, she believes in his ability to overturn a new leaf.
Inside the Virtual Dungeon, Grimlord congratulated Combax on his latest victory. Holding cups at hand, the Empire coincided with a celebration filled with champagne beverage.
"Excellent work Combax. You've managed to give the VR Troopers a taste of our medicine, taking away the most valuable devices in their arsenal. I could not be any happier than to give credit where credit is due," Grimlord stated.
"A pleasure it is," Combax said. "The Virtualizers of both the Red and Blue Troopers are now in our hands. Unfortunately, the Silver Samurai managed to keep his intact. Talk about cowardice wouldn't you agree?"
Grimlord was amused upon hearing his response. "Those Troopers may have been defeated but they refuse to accept their demise. I'm going to have a word with the chairman of the board and demand them to formally hand over the remaining Virtualizer. I will make sure they realize they aren't as superior of a force they claim to be."
"They may have put up a fight but I get the feeling something seems very off," Combax added. "The Troopers utilized their most powerful signature weapons against me. As formidable of a team they were, their performance in the match just wasn't on par for some reason. If you claim that the VR Troopers are a cancer to the Virtual World, how is it I managed to defeat them with ease?"
Grimlord tried his best to hide the truth. Despite his attempt, however, Combax would suspect a high trace of suspicion lurking from his face.
"Nonsense, you went all out to show them that even at their best, you're one step ahead of the trio," Grimlord commented. "When General Ivar and I were in talks of recruiting you, I was quite skeptical. Some of my key lieutenants made their mark in the promotion training our recruits into the competent warriors I've grown to admire. It took an extensive period of time before I appointed them to carry out our mission as we expand our mutant pecking order. Based from your performance, it has brought to my attention that I underestimated all the effort that you put your body through."
Combax contemplated on Grimlord's comments seemingly on the fence where he stood in the mutant hierarchy.
"I know you mean well. But let me say that for the record I don't like it when folks like you tend to keep things under wraps," he ranted. A scuffle began to develop between the soldier based robot and the Wizard of Darkness. It was there in which a horde of mutants intervened in time to prevent the altercation.
"What is going on?" Emerging from the double doors, General Ivar stepped in to restrain them both.
"It seems your boss may have predetermined my victory against the VR Troopers. Unless he proves his innocence, let me beat some sense to him until he confesses," Combax shouted threatening to provoke him.
"How insensitive you are to accuse me of orchestrating the result. The rules were loose and underhanded tactics were legal. Fact of the matter is even as they're adjusting to their new powers, you defeated the VR Troopers in front of a jam packed crowd," Grimlord defended himself on the matter.
"May I have a word with you?" Ivar advised. As the members of the Empire continued to socialize, he and Combax took a moment to take their conversation outside of the throne room.
"I don't think I elaborated to you more about this. Grimlord doesn't tolerate it when people defy his orders," Ivar warned him.
"The VR Troopers' days may be outnumbered. But it's very clear Grimlord is telling me something I don't already know," said Combax.
"Enough with the excuses, I convinced Grimlord to recruit you for the reason being that you are without a doubt the most ruthless combatant the Virtual World has to offer," Ivar argued.
"So what I'm getting is that you're willing to defend that nimrod given the way he's treated his comrades?" Combax prolonged the bickering much to Ivar's temper.
"You're complaining over nothing. You've managed to accomplish what was required and he was very impressed. Simple as that," General Ivar said.
"General, you were an inspiration to me the day you took me under your wing. When I was brought into the Virtual Combat Federation, it was our partnership that opened the gateway into combat sports," Combax confessed. "I owed my success to you for shaping me up to be the most competent fighter. But I refuse to work with an arrogant fool like Grimlord, and I don't want any part of it end of story."
In the midst of what seemed to be a heated conflict, Colonel Ice Bot approached the mutants to follow up on their status.
"Pardon me but shouldn't you be inside celebrating with the rest of our crew?" He wondered.
"Let us have a moment," Ivar insisted. The Colonel nodded as he returned to the throne room.
"Please Combax and think about what I said. Our army is continuing to expand its empire throughout the Real World. Think about what you can contribute to the mutant race once we enslave the human population? Let Grimlord be your guide to help maintain stability in our expansion for an even better world." General Ivar elaborated continuing to use his influence as far as his apprentice's judgment is concerned.
"You heard me once and hear me out again. I don't want any part of it," Combax reiterated. Just when he prepared to leave, Zelton peeped out from the double doors to inform them of some breaking news.
"You guys need to come see this. Someone would like to have a word with you, Combax," Zelton provided with an update. Ivar and a reluctant Combax stared at each other briefly before complying with the order. They would reenter the throne to find the Mutant Empire gathering next to the monitor screen.
"Commissioner Vexor, how are you this evening?" Combax greeted him.
"I have spent the past few hours trying to process that bout from earlier," he said. "I just got in touch with the professor responsible for the creation of the VR Troopers. The way he chickened out of the post match stipulation, they deserve every right to be punished. This has brought me to my attention that upon further review, I have decided to sanction a return bout between Combax and the Silver Samurai."
As they overheard the response, the entire clan went livid. Neither one clamored the decision that had been made.
"How is that possible? It was very clear that Combax managed to one up the Troopers at every chance they had," Colonel Icebot said somewhat confused by the unexpected verdict.
"The committee of the VCF and I spent an extended period of time discussing the issue. The Virtual Combat Federation is a brand whose core values are to appease fans by providing them the best entertainment possible. Without them we wouldn't be in existence," Vexor explained.
"It serves them right. We all know what they witnessed and there is no other proof to justify it," Grimlord said angrily.
"If you would listen to me for what I'm about to say next, we would get somewhere," Vexor argued. "Going back to our fans, they were very impressed with the performance between opposing competitors. After giving plenty of thought, we made a decision to give it another go. Combax will step foot in the same stadium one more time against the remaining VR Trooper. Shall your client prevail, you would have fully obtained their Virtualizers and the Troopers will be no more."
General Ivar volunteered to respond. "Combax and I have worked together in the past. Let us take on the Silver Samurai and put an end to his misery."
"That won't be necessary," Vexor told him. "While I wished to have included you and Decimator to make it 3-on-3, I was testing to see how capable you were against multiple opponents. Considering Blue Hawk and Red Sheriff are exempt from the grudge match, it's safe to say I was very impressed."
The fumes started to boil as far as Combax's patience is concerned.
"I've had enough with screwy shenanigans. I don't need the Mutant Empire to help fight my battles. If this means they plan to hand in the last Virtualizer then so be it," he stated much to Grimlord's disdain.
"You're making a big mistake," the Wizard of Darkness rejected the robot's attitude.
"According to VCF regulations, an important guideline in our policy is that neither party shall get into contact with the other in any way shape or form until the fight takes place," Vexor continued.
"Combax was with us the entire time. He wouldn't have confronted with the Troopers prior to their eventual match," General Ivar claimed.
"The committee has spent monitoring surveillance in the Real World and the Virtual World," Vexor replied. "We stumbled into bits of footage with the Skug soldiers you sent out to dish out the VR Troopers. Any outsider affiliated with the competitor shall be penalized and would settle a series of 2 round matches to determine the winner. Since these factors were beyond Combax's control, we made it an exception. However, if you dare try to plot a scheme like this again, you will be barred from entering or participating in any VCF event that takes place."
By shoving him to the corner, Combax began to provoke General Ivar in a scrutinizing manner.
"Did you even doubt for a second I did not stand a chance against the Troopers? I've spent my time challenging the best competitors that this organization has to offer. How in the world could a soldier stab me in the back and make it seem like I could not fight my battles?" Combax shouted demanding for a retort. "Answer me!"
"Leave Ivar out of this conversation," Grimlord stepped forth to his defense. "I urged him to deploy the Skugs. That would have hindered their ability to compete even in their armored forms."
"You realized going into this mess would have gotten you to face such consequences," Vexor warned him. "If the Trooper wins, you'll be forced to hand over the Virtualizers back to his respective teammates. However, if Combax triumphs, the rest of the Virtualizers belong to you as long as they're not under the hands of the Mutant Empire."
On behalf of the announcement, Grimlord did not take the stipulation kindly on the manner.
"You may have been smart enough to keep tabs on our activity. Even if he wins, the best thing to come out of this will be the day the Troopers seize to disband by default," he stated. "Planet Earth will fall under our ruling before you know it."
After contemplating on something he'd like to convey, Combax proceeded to respond.
"I've been hesitant to say this. Just as I'm going into my hundredth match, I would like to propose another stipulation. If I were to lose in the upcoming match, I will retire from in ring competition altogether," he offered with a request.
"You wouldn't dare!" General Ivar exclaimed with disapproval over his student's decision.
"I'd rather take my chances and prove to my fans and the Virtual World I am the best damn fighter around. You sure as hell aren't going to change that," Combax scolded him.
"Don't speak to your general like that," Ivar said.
"'Was' your general," Combax counteracted with an attempt at clarification. "It's been a long day. I should go and get some rest."
As Combax exited the throne room, General Ivar tried to reason with his apprentice but walked away in disgust.
"I'll be watching you from the sidelines, and the committee will ensure neither member of the Mutant Empire interferes in the bout. Don't you dare defy me," Vexor said. Upon conclusion of the live feed, the transmission signal screen faded before turning static.
"Just when we thought we were making progress, that imbecile had to get in our way. The Silver Samurai Trooper will be gone before you know it," Grimlord said clenching his fist that enveloped into a glowing red.
The night swept cold feet for J.B Reese. With his teammates' powers stripped away at the hands of the Mutant Empire, part of him felt accountable for what happened. He took a glimpse from his phone reflecting on the dissension that ensued within the team. He sent out a text message with the intention of making amends. Despite good intentions, she had yet to make a response.
J.B sighed. He leaned his back against the corner of his bedroom wall. Since becoming a Trooper, the overwhelming burden of dealing with his commitment as a leader had placed him in a position he hadn't been in prior. He glanced at his photo gallery consisting of the images he took alongside Ryan and Kaitlin. It was the still frames that reminded him of the memories they cherished and the adventures they experienced. For as long as he knew them, he did not want to perform any action that may sabotage their friendship.
J.B headed over towards his desk, switching on the desktop of his computer. As he got onto his internet browser, he scrolled over to his social media profile page, clicking on the video chat tab. Using his mouse, J.B clicked on Tao's name as displayed on the contacts menu. While connecting to a server, it was a matter of time before Tao managed to get in touch with his apprentice.
"J.B, it's so good to be hearing from you. How have you been?" He wondered.
"I've been through a lot today, and I just thought I come up on here to check up on how you were doing," said J.B.
"I am doing well. This is my last night staying at this hotel. It's a bit mess as you can tell from what's behind me," Tao replied. "Is everything okay back at the dojo?"
"Things have been smooth sailing despite some bumpy roads along the way," said J.B.
"Bumpy? Judging from that tone of voice, I suspect you're not feeling well," Tao observed from his somber behavior.
"The students are getting better at every class session. Lately, I've had so much going on outside of my teaching that I can't seem to control my humility," J.B stammered trying to clear the air on his problems.
"Don't hesitate J.B San, go on," Tao said.
"I've been pushing my students too hard I even had them jog during a heat wave. Some group of thugs attacked us along the way. Luckily, we managed to take them out," J.B confessed leaving his Sensei astonished by the news.
"It's not a good impression hearing such unfortunate news," Tao told him. "It wasn't easy enough when it came to my Karate training. The day I became a certified instructor, I've had difficulty disciplining my students. I may have been educated but doing the real thing took time to adapt. Impostor syndrome crept up to me."
J.B brought up a question. "What decided you to keep trying?"
"As much doubt that was planted on me, Martial Arts was more than just the techniques. When I was in college, I majored in philosophy. I spent a good portion of my time reading about some of the famous figures that reminded us how beautiful society can be. From Socrates to Gandhi to a Martial Arts legend like Bruce Lee, philosophy was what got me into studying Karate," Tao elaborated. "The point is that knowledge can be an effective way of providing expertise to those willing to learn. Everybody learns at a different pace. Don't expect every student to perfect a lesson overnight. Patience is the key to all good things that will eventually come in life."
J.B smiled taking his feedback to heart. "Now that reminds me why I agreed to be taken under your wing."
"Another thing I've learned is that even if you've reached to where you've fully understood Karate, the road doesn't stop there," said Tao. "When it comes to being a team leader, it takes that one person to encourage others and motivate them to push forward enough in reaching their full potential. It's that sense of good mentorship that will have a positive influence on them. The road may not be easy but the thing with patience is it takes time to fully realize our craft and the way we approach them. Life will have its ups and downs. At the end of the day, I have confidence that you willpower your way out from the well."
Having acknowledged the profound words coming from his Sensei, J.B couldn't help but choke up.
"Thanks Tao. It's been hard but I could definitely have handled it better. I just hope that they forgive me even despite my attitude," J.B said expressing gratitude towards his Sensei.
"Never expect the worst. You have my sincere gratitude and confidence to figure this one out," Tao concluded while looking at the time on his computer.
"Is everything alright Sensei?" J.B inquired.
"I wish we could chat longer but my flight takes off first thing in the morning. I'll let you know when I'm making my arrival," said Tao.
J.B nodded. "It's been a pleasure talking with you. Take care Sensei."
"You do the same. See you soon." With the conclusion of their chat, they went ahead to disconnect their feed from the video.
J.B reflected on his mentor's life lessons. In doing so, he grabbed his phone once again to check for any recently received text messages. With a lack of response, he dialed her phone number but received nothing but a voicemail. Utilizing that feature to effective use, he proceeded to follow through with the phone call.
How are you Kaitlin? Listen I know you're angry at me and rightfully so. I admit I went off the deep end. But I didn't mean those things I said. I love you Kaitlin, and you deserve to be treated with upmost respect. I should be confessing to you in person which brings me to this. Meet me at the lake outside of the professor's house tomorrow morning. I look forward to seeing you there.
Meanwhile, Kaitlin exited from the showers tucked in with a pink bathrobe worn around her body. She took notice of J.B's message as indicated from the menu on her phone. Kaitlin took a moment to listen to the details he had addressed. She closed her eyes to alleviate her nuisance with him from earlier. Upon conclusion of the message, Kaitlin proceeded to text back to notify her availability. While the past week may have been rocky for the couple, all it boils down to consist of their desire to reconcile.
While the sun ascended that following morning, J.B stood along the shoreline next to the lake ahead of him. He took this moment to appreciate the beauty that Mother Nature had created since the beginning of time. From plants and trees blowing like spring fever to birds chirping from a distance, the scenery alone downplayed his pessimism plaguing his judgment. It wouldn't be long when Kaitlin parked her car along the granite trail next to her boyfriend's Honda.
"Hey Kate," he replied providing a bit of a warm welcome to her. "I know it's pretty early and all. How are you feeling?"
From the front seat, Kaitlin provided a Styrofoam tray consisting of two coffee beverages on the sides.
"For starters, I managed to get ourselves some coco latte to start the day. It definitely helps stimulate your motor functioning," she said.
"That's really sweet of you to do something like this," J.B complimented to her girlfriend. He grabbed the beverage along with a wrapped straw that came along with the order.
"You're certainly welcome," Kaitlin responded to his appreciation with sincere politeness.
"Listen, I admit I've been acting a bit of a jerk the past week. I'm not one to be apologetic but that's what happens when you feel the weight of the world hanging on your shoulders," J.B said owing up to his confession.
"Easy for you to say," said Kaitlin still displeased from the display of rudeness J.B had given to her prior.
"Kaitlin, the way I've been treating you was selfish and idiotic. It was out of character for me to act the way I did back in the lab. I'm sorry," he attempted in issuing her an apology.
"J.B, you went off the deep end. That attitude you had back there was completely uncalled for. If we're going out there on the field, we need to work as a team, and for that to happen, we need a leader capable in doing so," Kaitlin said.
"I know, and I'm willing to give it another go," J.B pleaded. "After that stunt Combax pulled out on you guys, I'll make sure to get our win back and have your powers restored."
"I want to believe that too," Kaitlin continued to prolong the conversation. "Knowing how powerful he is, it's not surprising the way he manhandled us. It's a good thing he didn't strip away our powers entirely."
"I couldn't believe that myself," J.B concurred setting aside his coffee on a nearby picnic table.
"J.B, whatever it is you're going through, I'm right here. Don't let our differences get in the way of our duty," Kaitlin said reassuring her partner.
"Ever since I became a Karate instructor, there are just so much expectations weighing on my shoulders. Running a dojo is one thing but leading a team to war is a whole other story. I don't want to let anyone down," J.B ranted.
"J.B," Kaitlin's concern over her partner's well being shifted the needle in terms of her reaching out for support.
"I've never expressed my emotions to Tao or Ryan the way I do to you. One thing is for sure. Being thrust in a war to defend reality has more weight than working on your daily chores," J.B said. "Grimlord may be an antagonizing figure in the franchise. But witnessing him in our world and not some fictional realm is just, freaky. I never thought I would have a bigger responsibility that involves taking out an outside force threatening to destroy our turf."
"It's our responsibility as well," Kaitlin retorted. She stood across the lake beside J.B taking a glimpse at the massive body of water ahead of them. "Remember when we went canoeing you saved me from drowning right at that very spot. I accidentally dropped my sketch pad that I was so eager to get it back. I felt like an idiot that I nearly cost my life just because of one minor accident. Next thing you know, I woke up along the shore to find the first person standing was, you."
J.B spoke up. "It was the first time I gave anyone CPR, and I never thought our relationship would blossom from here on out."
Reflecting on their past, the couple laughed in hindsight.
"As corny as it sounds, maybe fate wanted us together," Kaitlin speculated on the matter.
"I can't stress this enough but I really appreciate you being here," said J.B elated with joy. Kaitlin wrapped her arms around J.B. Her eyes remain glued towards his that ignited her compassion and desire to be around him.
"J.B, you have been the most amazing person I've met. Even when I've doubted myself, you would be the flashlight to this dark shroud we're in. I couldn't have had a better trainer than the person who sees the good in people," she empathized. "You are not alone. We can defeat him powers or no powers. It's our call to action that can make a difference even for the better."
"I must have lent out more of those books to you than I realized," J.B recalled from the day he handed out his stash of martial arts collection to Kaitlin.
"I don't want our world to be succumbed to terror and violence. But we can try our best to make sure we keep everyone safe as possible," Kaitlin continued. "You'll make a great leader. Ryan, Professor Hart, even I believe what you can be capable of. It all comes down to trusting in your confidence to leading the team."
J.B's eyes glimmered absorbing her kind words to heart. "I guess it's one of those rare cases where the teacher learns from the student. Thanks Kaitlin."
The young blonde corresponded with an affectionate ray of light beaming from her soul to his. As their eyes gazed like an undying flame from a campfire, she closed her eyes while presenting a passionate kiss that set J.B's heart rate skyrocketing in a sense words could not express. The sweetness of her candy coated lips overpowered the necessity for him to resist. For as much fog that surrounded them, they would soon approach an open door that led to their exit of despair. Upon their flash of intimacy, they received an incoming transmission coming from Ryan.
"Hey Ryan what's up?" Kaitlin said pulling up her cell phone.
"Guys, you need to come see this," he responded.
"We'll be on our way." Kaitlin affirmed. The couple gathered their belongings from the picnic table before riding off to the site of the professor's laboratory.
Minutes elapsed shortly as they arrived at their destination. They would soon approach with Ryan and Professor Hart while they gathered around.
"Thank goodness you guys are here," Horatio said.
"What's going on?" J.B wondered.
"The committee is going to get in touch with us just as the rematch gets underway. It's a virtual meeting about what to expect heading into the rematch, you know pre made stipulations," Ryan explained to them.
J.B remained oblivious in regards to what has happened since he walked out of the lab in disgust.
"Long story short but Vexor is in charge of the operations surrounding the fighting promotion. He is looking to speak with us before you compete," Kaitlin explained to him.
"You make it sound like I'm getting a referral by a school principal," J.B said.
"Sometime after you left, we got in touch with the VCF committee regarding about our actions back in the stadium. Even though the way our match ended in chaos, they were willing to give us one more chance to invoke a winner take all grudge match," replied Professor Hart.
"Last time I checked, Combax's deadly arsenal had us nearly destroyed," said Ryan, "That is of course J.B is up for the challenge."
"Look, I know lately I've been a pain in everyone's ass," J.B admitted. "That doesn't mean I'm not committed of being a team player. I'll do anything to make it up to you guys even if it means costing my life."
"Unless if it's involving using good judgment, let's not think about the latter," Kaitlin warned them.
"This is our opening. When Grimlord sent out the Skugs to wear us out, it was his way of ensuring we wouldn't be on par with his new client," said Professor Hart. "I have your suit polished and fully charged for battle. There won't be any excuses for our mishaps."
"I've been waiting to get my hands on Combax. There's no way in hell he get a hold of all of our Virtualizers," J.B said cracking his knuckles.
"I admire your confidence. However, it's best not to get carried away. With Ryan and Kaitlin stripped of their powers, it's up to you to defeat Combax and retrieve their Virtualizers," the professor took caution into account.
"J.B before you go, I just want to apologize for how I acted. The point of me getting into your skin was so it can motivate you to be an effective leader. Turns out it didn't work out quite that way. For that I'm sorry," Ryan confessed.
"And I'm sorry from the way I treated you all. Since that training simulation, I haven't been thinking clearly about my actions. Being in charge to defend the world from evil may be a load of a responsibility. I realize now I have folks around me who have my back even at our worst days," J.B said turning towards his teammates. Kaitlin held J.B's hand reminding him of the notion that no matter what happens, she would have his back.
"Apologies accepted," Horatio affirmed. "I am very aware that being a VR Troopers has its risks. As adults, you have every right to decide if you're willing to be part of this task. That includes putting your bodies on the line to keep our reality safe. Each action you commit to has a consequence. Even if we make mistakes, we must keep moving forward by learning from them and embrace our flaws. What history has shown makes us mature from our predecessors and it's something Grimlord fails to realize."
Upon reflection from the professor's remarks, the Troopers took matters to heart. An alarm startled the gang as they began to receive an incoming transmission from the VCF headquarters.
"I guess it's about time," Kaitlin said taking a deep breath. Professor Hart keyed in the appropriate buttons on his dashboard to open up a three way simulcast consisting of them alongside Combax and Vexor.
"It's a pleasure to have you all here at this time. The bout between Combax and the Troopers was one of the more anticipated match ups we've had in quite some time. To recap, if the VR Troopers were to lose, they would not only forfeit their Virtualizers over to their opponent. As punishment from last time, they will be subjected to be confined in Virtual Reality for life. Unfortunately, one of your parties involved did not live up to the end of their bargain. Only two of those three devices were obtained. Upon further review, we at the Virtual Combat Federation have reached a verdict to come up with what we feel is the best solution. A grudge match will take place between the Silver Samurai Trooper and Combax. The winner will walk out with all 3 Virtualizers intact and leave unhinged. Shall one of you lose will be forced to be sentenced into a death penalty live for everyone around to witness," Vexor addressed to the two parties.
"You VR Troopers may think you're in the right. It doesn't change the fact you three were cowards teleporting out of the battlefield. When I get my hands at your so-called leader, it'll prove that you are in no way above my league," said Combax.
"We'll just see about that," J.B replied.
"Will your actions live up to your word? I would hate to fall under the same predicament you went through," Combax spoke with intimidation.
"It appears we're all on the same page. In this rematch, we must have a decisive finish. There will be no shenanigans or parlor tricks to evade the inevitable. When it's all said and done, we will determine who is without a doubt the overall better fighter," Vexor elaborated.
"I may have screwed up before but I can assure you all of my doubts are put to rest. I'll be ready for you Combax. No excuses whatsoever," J.B said with reassurance.
"As the event gets underway, you two should be in tip top shape for battle. Have any final words before you two head out," said Vexor.
"We've already made ourselves clear Commissioner. There won't be any delaying necessary," Combax clarified on the matter.
"Then it's settled. The anticipated bout between Combax and the Silver Samurai Trooper will commence in a moment. Good luck and may the best fighter prevail," Vexor addressed. With the conclusion of the formal brief meeting, the live feed went abrupt static.
"Hey man this is it. You're the best chance we have left. Make it count," Ryan said making amends with his longtime companion.
"Judging from his demeanor, Combax will go all out to ensure you are put to rest. Trust your instinct and it will all work out in the long haul," Professor Hart reassured.
"The professor's right. Don't let your guard down J.B. Just remember no matter what happens, we have your back." Kaitlin said as she leaned her body towards J.B. Together they embraced pursing their lips sealed for another subsequent kiss. "Go kick his ass."
J.B nodded. "You damn right I will."
With the much needed comfort, it was now or never. J.B headed over into the same chamber pod that brought him over to the Virtual World. Tucking himself inside the pod, he signaled for Kaitlin to seal the hatch. J.B took a deep breath while easing tension away from his body. With a confident expression on her face, Kaitlin gave him thumbs up to signify a gesture of good luck.
From backstage, J.B opened his eyes to find himself standing behind the curtains at Spielban Stadium. Automatically clad in his silver armor suit, his heart raced with anticipation of the long waited rematch. Just pass the curtain he could overhear an overwhelming amount of cheers roaring from the stadium. As the ring announcer introduced his name, J.B wasted no time than to walk through the aisle. To no surprise, a unanimous audience displayed their jeers at the VR Trooper.
This is it, the moment you've all been waiting for - a grudge match to determine the fate of these two combatants. As the match gets underway, it doesn't appear the crowd is pleased to see the Silver Samurai out here this evening. It is very surreal ladies and gentlemen but tonight winner takes all."
In due course, the roaring chant of boos would subside. Combax made his approach down the aisle to a massive set of cheers to signify their support. The robot in camouflage armor entered the ring standing toe to toe with J.B.
"You made a big mistake refusing to comply with your defeat. Lightning is going to strike twice by the time this is all over with," he taunted.
"I may not have been at my full potential but I won't be making any excuses. Your reign on top ends here Combax," J.B responded with an insult of his own.
"Last time we fought, I humiliated you and your trusty friends in the worst way imaginable. This time, there is no escape whatsoever," Combax informed him. The lights flickered throughout the venue. A chain linked bio dome had been lowered while surrounding the perimeter of the battle field leaving the competitors and the referee present within the confines of the structure. Both combatants glared across from one another aware of the stakes at hand. The referee stood in between the two running down the rules of the match in play. J.B and Combax stood in their fighting poses anticipating for the sound of the ring bell.
The fight ensued. Each competitor wasted no time than to exchange left and right blows amongst one another. J.B threw his arm out for a haymaker punch but Combax reversed the move into a hip toss, taking him down on the canvas. He continued the assault with a string of punches that overwhelmed the earthling. J.B used his resilience to escape the submission hold.
"I'm just getting warmed up Trooper," the robot bantered.
"All of that trash talk is only going to get you so far," J.B commented. Once more, the two competitors went to blows as the capacity crowd roared on throughout the stadium. Combax pounced at J.B using a thrust kick but the Silver Samurai swerved out of the way just when it could connect. He blocked the leg countering back with a kick of his own to the back of his opponent's head. Combax staggered around on the mat while J.B capitalized among a series of stiff rights to the robot's torso armor. He finished the combination with an uppercut to Combax causing him to fly back first onto the ground.
Well take a look at this folks. The Silver Trooper has been pummeling fan favorite mutant Combax like a sand bag. He knows what is at stake and he'll stop at nothing to win this match.
As opposed to trash talk, J.B made no hesitation than to approach his opponent. Just when he picked him up, Combax swiped the foot of J.B tripping him back first on the canvas. The robot clad in camouflage gear went pound for pound mounting punches on the Trooper. The referee insisted for him to stop allowing Combax to step back on the damage. As he stared at the brutally beaten J.B, he waited patiently for the Trooper to get back up from the ground.
"You're not getting the better of me Combax," J.B muttered.
"It's no surprise. Since you refuse to quit, I may as well refresh your memory and bring out my trusty old friend." The soldier themed robot pulled out its signature knife looking to wear down his opponent. J.B held his ground dodging each of Combax's attempts. Each misdirected blast would reflect back all across the field as a result of the dome's firm formation. Using their reflexes, the combatants did their best to avoid being hit. The Silver Samurai brought out his laser blaster firing a series of direct blasts towards his opponent. Putting his knife to good use, Combax deflected each attack that came towards him. He struck back by laying damage onto J.B's armor leaving scratches sustained on his torso.
"You can keep up all you want. As unfortunate as it may sound you're just delaying the inevitable," Combax taunted continuing to get inside the Silver Samurai's skin.
"Like I haven't heard that before," J.B said.
Monitoring the action from the lab, Kaitlin alongside Ryan and Professor Hart monitored the battle unfold. Their faces evoked with concern over the physical well being of their comrade.
"This isn't good," the professor remarked.
"J.B has plenty of gas in the tank. That robot may be one tough son of a gun but he isn't going down that easily," Ryan said rooting for his friend to overcome the fight.
"Come on J.B, you can do this," Kaitlin whispered closing her eyes in prayer he comes out of this alive.
Cutting towards live footage in the stadium, the bout between J.B and Combax continued to wage on. The result of J.B's weapon prompted for Combax to counteract by using his laser assault rifle from their previous encounter. This course of action led to numerous explosives setting off debris shrouding the ring.
What a heated bout. It appears both competitors are pulling out all the stops as we speak. The performances shown by the Silver Samurai and Combax have been one for the ages. Take a look at the scorches scattered throughout their armor. The fight is far from over.
J.B panted. Beneath his helmet sweat trickled all over on his face.
"It appears your body is breaking down as far as I see. I wouldn't be surprised if you managed to have used up all of your strategies," said Combax.
"I'm far from being finished." J.B let off his weapon multiple times targeting the robot's left limb. He went on the offense with a high knee to the opponent's chin. Combax staggered around the more he struggled to maintain his balance. J.B leaped over his opponent for a Head Scissors takedown.
"You would do anything to retrieve something precious that belongs to your friends," said Combax.
"It's more than that. I'm willing to stand up for them even at their most vulnerable," J.B retorted, "And I sure as hell won't let your affiliation with Grimlord cause our world to fall under his influence."
The robot lowered his rifle taking a breather from the amount of physicality that just took place. "Your words speak just as loud as your fists. But let's see what our weapons can do."
Combax secured away his rifle to his holster strapped to the back of his body. Equipped with his knife once more, J.B enchanted the call of his Laser Lance thereby summoning his signature weapon.
"Now this seems to be a bit unfair," he said much to his dismay.
"Like they say, it's no holds barred," J.B recited Combax's lines from their initial encounter.
The combatants struck head on with their respective weapons intact. An exchange of cling and clang echoed throughout the venue. The roaring of the crowd signified their investment over the rematch that has escalated into a fever pitch. J.B managed to get the upper hand leaving Combax unhinged. He swung his lance towards him damaging the right arm of the soldier themed robot.
"You imbecile happened to lay damage to my arm? Very clever," said Combax wincing as a result of the pain he had to endure.
J.B combined his two blades into a lance channeling enough electric energy in preparation for the final attack. As he prepared to lunge towards his opponent, Combax tossed the knife, channeling energy from his non wounded arm to rupture the Trooper's thigh.
"Ah," J.B screeched clutching onto his injured body part.
"You may have inflicted me with pain. But no matter how dire the situation can be, I always have a trick up on my sleeve," said Combax. While approaching J.B, he pulled out the knife from the puncture of his opponent's leg.
"I don't know how long I can go just to see you suffer. I've said this last time that you've managed to pull off such incredible fortitude. It's ashamed because I expected a leader to be the best that your team has to offer. This doesn't appear to be the case for a combatant such as yourself." Combax continued to belittle the vulnerable J.B. With his entrusted knife, he plunged forward leaving singes all throughout the Trooper's armor. The soldier based robot pulled back his weapon with an alternate tactic in mind.
"Part of me would like to put an end to your misery. But your eventual death couldn't come without a final bang." Calling back his knife, he brought his laser rifle one more time. Looking to deliver the grand finale, Combax proceeded to lock in on his target.
J.B panicked. His heart raced in fear over the possibility of death lurking upon him. Just the thought of his demise being in vein may leave a negative impact the Troopers may not come back from. Where a sign of hope was bleak laid a glimmer at the end of the tunnel.
The instant that Combax pulled the trigger, J.B could barely dodged out of harm's way. He pulled himself up from the mat clutching onto his torso.
"How in the world is this possible?" The robot wondered.
"You may have pummeled me more times than I can count. I still have enough juice in this armor to keep on fighting," J.B said. By configuring updates through his data screen, this process allowed for him to recharge a portion of health from his VR suit. An aura of purple energy enveloped around J.B to indicate the power boost.
"Way to go J.B." Professor Hart along with Kaitlin and Ryan rejoiced back in the lab. Realizing what's at stake, this motivation would prove enough for J.B to turn the tide.
"Show me what you got," Combax said. They charged head on like an opposing group of football players playing defensive tackle. Combax tried to hold him off but the Silver Samurai managed to escape the clutches of his opponent. He held the robot around the waist lock lifting him belly up into a wrestling take down. With chain locks applied, they each countered hold for hold just shortly before J.B proceeded to apply for a triangle choke. Using all of his might, Combax lifted him up for a Powerbomb only to roll out of the move. J.B retrieved his Laser Lance, lunging towards the camouflage colored robot. While doing his damndest to evade the attack, he utilized the remains of his power to pull the lance away towards him.
"You don't have what it takes to destroy me!" He exclaimed. In a tug o' war, both competitors continued to draw the weapon away from each other like a sea saw levering the beam up and down. With his immense fortitude, J.B's momentum would allow him to gain the advantage he needed. He kicked Combax in the mid section as he staggered back on the mat. The ever fierce robot summoned his laser assault rifle once again firing energy beams directly towards him. One by one J.B deflected them with his Laser Lance. This scenario placed Combax in a predicament he could not escape from. Looking to take a moment to lock in his target, the Silver Samurai leaped from the ground soaring high as an eagle.
"I've got you where I wanted," he muttered with a grin.
Laser Lance Command, now!
As Combax fired the laser at him, J.B plunged his weapon as a catapult to deflect the opponent's attack back at him. Surprised by a dramatic shift in momentum, Combax failed to keep up the pace. It would be a matter of time before the Trooper retaliated with his finishing attack. Sparks erupted from the soldier's armor resulting of an explosion that fumed throughout the venue.
And just like that, J.B's dying will to survive proves eminent here tonight. If only we can get a look pass that debris, we may have found ourselves a winner.
When the smokes were cleared, viewers spotted Combax lying defenseless on the ring canvas. J.B stood tall taking a glimpse at the beaten down robot. After observing his condition, the referee raised his arms in an 'x' to indicate that he has in fact surrendered.
After 99 wins, the Silver Samurai has done what most fans had thought would be impossible. The streak has been broken! I don't know folks I am at a loss for words.
The crowd gasped in shock of what they were witnessing. Not only did their hometown hero loss his first match in the fed; But to come up short against a formidable opponent outside of their domain left everyone astonished.
"Alright Grimlord, I lived up to the end of your bargain. Hand over the Virtualizers back to me like you promised!" He demanded.
"I never wanted it to come down to this." Humiliated in defeat, Grimlord got on the microphone letting his announcement known to the public. "As much as I hate to admit, you may have defeated our most gifted fighter in the company. But defeat won't be enough to solidify your victory."
"Damn it," J.B sighed with the realization of the procedure that follows.
"Trooper, I demand you to follow post match protocol and destroy your opponent immediately," Grimlord ordered.
"I've already proven to you. I won't go as low as what the Mutant Empire had to put us through," The Trooper declined the offer to perform the task at hand.
"Listen to him. Do as he pleases," Combax insisted while remaining in pain.
The Silver Samurai pointed his Laser Lance at the near lifeless competitor. Despite a hard fought bout, he overcame what seemed to have been the impossible. This celebration would be more than just a victory well earned.
"I've learned in any form of Martial Arts, a winner comes out on top while maintaining pride and dignity. It's a code I believe in and I sure as hell won't turn my back on it," J.B said standing by his principle as envisioned.
"I didn't want my loss to end this way. Being undefeated may have demonstrated all of that hard work I've poured into. I knew there would come a day that a formidable opponent would surpass me," Combax whispered to him.
"This has gone beyond ludicrous. We're not asking you, we are demanding you. Do it!" Grimlord exclaimed as his face boiled in liquid.
"Please, I beg of you," Overhearing Combax's mutter, J.B turned away taking no pity over the fallen robot.
"There is no chance I will succumb to your need even if I have to take on the entire roster to do it," the Trooper refused to comply with their order.
"Well how unfortunate. If you have no intention then we may as well do something about it." Grimlord snapped. As the skies grew ominous by the hour, the creature raised his staff absorbing a ball of purple electricity from the heavens. J.B prepped his Laser Lance in anticipation of the attack. Taunting the Trooper to attack him, a sinister grin lurked beneath Grimlord's visage. Just when Grimlord proceeded to take action, Vexor emerged behind J.B's back aiming his tendrils directly towards him. In a last ditch effort, Combax shoved aside the Silver Samurai electrifying the already wounded robot.
"The Virtual Combat Federation raids talent all throughout the Virtual World," said Vexor standing alongside Grimlord by the barricade. "Combax was a hell of a talented performer. But like all performers, they are only as powerful as the next batch. This is what happens when our men fall short in battle."
"You've done a disservice to your own talent. Accepting defeat is nothing to be afraid of. But to kill off your best talent like that is pushing the envelope too far," J.B went on a tangent.
"Don't question my judgment. The Mutant Empire has established an elite army of mutants to fill in the void left behind by our comrades. We don't recruit those that defy or question our authority," Grimlord stated. By confronting the VR Trooper, he unveiled a pair of red and blue Virtualizers in the palm of his hand.
"I was hoping not to resort to this. Combax may have been destroyed but as far as you and I are concerned, this is war you cannot win. You and your friends are going to experience the worst case of destruction once your world falls in the clutches of the Mutant Empire. Maybe not tomorrow or next work but down the road, Reality will succumb to a period of anarchy and melancholy. We will meet again soon." Raising his staff once more, Grimlord created a portal that sent the Silver Samurai away from the Virtual World. By the time he escaped, J.B awoken to find himself inside the laboratory.
"J.B," Kaitlin bursts with excitement. Along with Horatio, she and Ryan approached him by the chamber pod. While remaining fatigued, J.B disclosed his fist to find their Virtualizers back in the right hands.
"Excellent way to go," Ryan celebrated with relief.
"I knew you'd do it," Kaitlin smiled congratulating her boyfriend in successfully securing the gold pendants.
A disgruntled Grimlord took out his frustrations among his colleagues as they congregated inside the creature's throne room.
"This is a disgrace. Combax may have came close to defeating the VR Trooper, but coming close is not going to be something I'll even tolerate," he dived in on a rant.
"He was a formidable recruitment we've had so far. But after the way you treated him, he had every right to leave our empire," said Zelton taking a glimpse from the scenario in an objective manner.
"It was General Ivar's endorsement of him that convinced me to hire that incompetent soldier. He had the potential to be a valuable asset. Unfortunately, his pride proved to be a liability to our mission," Grimlord continued.
"Your master, the VR Troopers may be back in full force. But I can reassure that with the extensive number of weaponry equipment in our disposal, I will make it up to you," General Ivar said pleading not to punish him.
"How has the training been for your soldiers?" Grimlord asked.
"So far target practice has been going smooth. They've managed to get better by each passing hour. The VR Troopers may have their trusty hand weapons. But that's nothing compared to the heavy artillery that come from our battle fleets. The trio won't know what will hit them," Ivar provided with an update.
Meanwhile, Grimlord took upon himself to give the general his gratitude. "You and I may not see eye to eye. Combax was a hell of a fighter who had a different perception when it comes to competition. He could have enhanced our army tenfold had things went in our favor. But just so you remember, the Mutant Empire keeps moving forward and we will continue to recruit members who will stand by us just as we stood for them."
"I understand," General Ivar said.
"With that being said, I was very impressed with how Air Striker managed to eavesdrop on the Troopers. Perhaps we could run the ball with that and have him keep tabs on their daily lives," Grimlord suggested.
"That does not sound like a bad idea at all. I will rally my men to begin assembling our battle vehicles," said Ivar.
"Excellent, and for that matter, report to my throne in the coming weeks. The VR Troopers are going to face another challenge that will determine the weak link in their group. As soon as I take one out of the equation, their teammates will follow suit until they've been eradicated. Only this time we'll be the ones having the last laugh," Grimlord bantered.
"I won't let you down Grimlord. You can count on it," Ivar reassured to his boss.
"Let's pray to the underworld this plan works," Grimlord said clenching his fist that illuminated with a red glow.
In the midst of training, J.B monitored the students as they performed a technique he had demonstrated prior. The students followed his chain of command shouting every word on his mark. When it came down to the wire, J.B finished up their exercise just as their session concluded for the day.
Great job everyone. Before I go, there is something I need to address to you all," he said giving them his full attention. "The past couple of days, I haven't been acting like myself. It was wrong and disparaging to be treating you in a way that makes you feel unwelcome in the dojo. Even as your teacher, I am flawed just like every one of you standing here on this mat. It's not often I have students referring me as their Sensei. I refuse to think highly of myself. The point I'm trying to make is when it comes to life, we'll have our good and bad days ahead. I've learned it's important we maintain or control our humility without lashing out our frustrations towards others. That also includes your classmates and the folks that surround you where ever you go. I may not be able to undo the mistake I made. However, I can reassure that I can learn from them and that's why we're here. It takes years of practice to fully understand the philosophy behind Martial Arts. There's no easy way or shortcut for that matter. It's a natural progression, and for that to happen, we'll need to be on the same page. Let's all support each other the next time you enter this room ready to learn. Class, dismiss.
Coming off the heels of what appeared to have been a formal apologetic speech, the students approached their lockers to gather their personal belongings. J.B grabbed his water bottle by his rucksack preparing to consume the fluid.
"Now that was an inspiring speech you performed right there," Kaitlin provided with a compliment.
"Let's say it's a professional way of getting through to my students," J.B said in response to his girlfriend's remarks.
"Even yours truly?" Kaitlin flirted with the idea.
"Kaitlin, not in front of everyone here," J.B whispered, his face blemishing red. "But I know you mean well."
The couple giggled.
"If this doesn't make you feel comfortable, we could continue this chat inside the car," Kaitlin suggested.
"It's not necessary," J.B shrugged it off. "I just thought I want to say thanks for helping me get through my emotions. I felt like I was confined inside a gas chamber I couldn't breathe in."
"For the record," Kaitlin said, "Next time you go on a rampage, just be sure you know what you're getting yourself into. Anger isn't going to solve anything that comes in our way."
"I'll say," J.B concurred when complying with constructive criticism. "If there's one thing I've learned when it comes to leadership, maintaining a clear head will help us out in the long run. That mindset is going to be of some use once we face Grimlord. We could surely make the most out of it while we can."
With a face of buoyancy, she bestowed J.B with a mutual hug signifying her forgiveness towards the instructor.
"Hey guys I guess I missed out on all the fun." Stepping foot inside the dojo, Ryan approached his friends standing by the reception area.
"How have you been Ryan? We weren't expecting you just now," replied Kaitlin ostensibly surprised by his startling appearance.
"Let's say I can be full of surprises," Ryan said pulling out his friend's I-phone from his pocket. "In all seriousness, I just came by since you left your phone back at the lab, so I figured I turn it in."
"I was too excited to have our Virtualizers back I was beginning to wonder where I left it," Kaitlin appreciated the gesture. "Thank you Ryan."
Ryan exchanged his teammate's comment with an affectionate smile.
"We've all have quite the week. After the falling out I had with you two, I figured I owe you guys a gift of apology," J.B said.
"It's no hard feelings," Ryan reassured to him. "You've heard the expression of 'There's No 'I' in team right?"
"I'm pretty positive I've heard that quote a thousand times by this point," the Karate instructor replied.
By the desk of J.B's office, Ryan took a glimpse at a collection of picture frames still comprised of the trio as children. Such photos were filled with nostalgia over a lifelong period of time as friends.
"It's like everywhere I go, I'm reminded how close we've been. Folks come and go in our lives yet after all of this time, we're an unbreakable unit. Just the thought of that never seizes to amaze me," he said based on his observations.
"I know what you mean," Kaitlin empathized. Her participation in the conversation would be interrupted when she received a text alert sent from Woody. "It's my boss. I better get over to the Chronicle soon."
"You should go ahead and shower while you're at it," J.B advised.
"Funny because that's exactly what I was going to say," Kaitlin cleared up on the manner.
"What's the occasion?" Ryan spoke with curiosity.
"Another one of your father's coworkers set up a consultation for me to attend. I guess they're ready to come out of the woodwork," Kaitlin answered.
"Hopefully it all goes well," J.B assured to her.
"It was good seeing you two today. I should probably be out on my way and give you guys your space," said Ryan.
"Likewise Ryan," Kaitlin exchanged with a flattering remark. To that end, Ryan bid his goodbye as he departed from the dojo thereafter.
"Since I wouldn't dare to lock any of my students out, I'll wait by my office until you finish up dressing," J.B notified her.
"I'll make it quick," Kaitlin replied. She grabbed her rucksack by the mat before proceeding over to the women's locker room.
I was relieved. For the longest time, I struggled to open up about my doubts to those around me. It's scary sometimes to think about the fear of letting down not only ourselves but the people willing to support us no matter the mistakes we make. I've realized now I am not alone in this forsaking war against the Mutant Empire.
A good leader prides in confidence to support their teammates through thick and thin. At this rate, it'll take more than just an established defense force to protect reality from destroying mankind. I won't let Grimlord take that away from us. As long as the VR Troopers are around, the Empire will not get their filthy hands on our world, not by a longshot. If there's one thing I don't doubt, it can all be summarized in a single word: hope.
