Chapter 1: What's your favorite scary movie?
Miguel was standing at the bus stop. In just a few minutes, the bus would arrive and he would be off to Mexico. He needed to find his father, discover who he really was. Miguel was getting more and more anxious every minute, so it was no surprise that he jumped a little when his phone rang. Miguel knew he had to ditch his phone, but he still hadn't done it yet. He knew that it was probably his mom or sensei calling him. Miguel decided to look at the caller ID and was surprised to see that it was an unknown number. Miguel picked up.
"Hello?" Miguel asks.
"Hello." A deep voice says on the other end.
"Um, who is this?" Miguel asks.
"Someone who is very interested in you." The voice says.
"Sorry, but I think you have the wrong number." Miguel says before hanging up. As Miguel put his phone away, he couldn't shake the strange feeling he now had. Something about that guy's voice made him feel uneasy. A little while later, the same number calls again. Miguel reluctantly answers. "Hello?" Miguel asks.
"Don't hang up on me. I just wanna talk." The voice says.
"Yeah, well you can bother someone else." Miguel says. He quickly hangs up and this time, blocks the number. A while after that, a new number calls. Miguel was getting frustrated at this point so he picks up. "Is this the same guy?" Miguel asks.
"Why did you block me?" The voice asks.
"Because I don't have time for this shit." Miguel says.
"Well, it looks like you have plenty of time." The voice says.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Miguel asks. For some reason, that anxious feeling he had increased. Miguel looks around, trying to see if anyone was watching him.
"What's your favorite scary movie?" The voice asks. Miguel decided to play along so that maybe this guy would leave him alone.
"Um…I don't know. I don't really watch those things." Miguel says.
"Come on, you have to have at least one." The voice says.
"Uh, I guess Saw was okay." Miguel answers.
"What about slashers? You like any of those movies?" The voice asks.
"I mean…I'm not sure. Everyone gets killed off so it's hard to care for anyone." Miguel admits.
"Have you seen Stab?" The voice asks.
"I've heard of it." Miguel says. The voice doesn't respond for a while.
"Do you feel safe at that bus stop…Miguel Diaz?" The voice says. Miguel's eyes immediately widen. Miguel quickly hangs up and blocks the number. Miguel was looking around, trying to see if any of the Cobras were planning on jumping him. The bus couldn't get here soon enough. Suddenly, Miguel gets a text on his phone. Miguel looks down and sees that he was sent an image. Miguel opens his phone and is shocked by the contents. It's a picture of the front door of his apartment. Miguel then receives a text from the number.
"I can't wait to see what the insides of your mom and grandma look like." The text reads.
"What the hell do you want from me?!" Miguel texts back. Suddenly, the number begins calling. Miguel quickly picks up.
"I want to play a game. I'm going to ask you some questions about scary movies. You get them right, and your family gets to live." The voice says.
"That's not fair! I don't know many scary movies!" Miguel shouts.
"Question 1, what was the nickname given to the killer in Stab?" The voice demands. Miguel sighs in relief as he knows the answer.
"Ghostface." Miguel says.
"Correct. Question 2, who was the killer in A Nightmare on Elm Street?" The voice asks.
"Freddy Krueger." Miguel responds.
"Correct. Time for your final question. Who was Jason Voorhees's first victim?" The voice asks. Miguel begins panicking.
"How is anyone supposed to remember that?" Miguel shouts.
"I do. You better give me an answer within the next 10 seconds." The voice demands. Miguel panics and doesn't know what to do. Miguel then snaps out of it and quickly begins looking up the answer. Eventually, he finds it.
"Alice Hardy! She was the final girl from the original movie." Miguel shouts. There is a small pause before the voice speaks again.
"Sorry, but you didn't answer fast enough. I guess your family has to pay." The voice says.
"No! I answered all your stupid questions! You better leave my family alone!" Miguel shouts. There's a long pause. "Hello?!" Miguel shouts. Miguel is horrified to see a new picture pop up. The person behind the camera is holding a knife and is now even closer to the apartment door. This had to be a prank right? It was just Cobra Kai messing with him. Miguel then gets yet another text. However, it wasn't from the mysterious number. It was from Eli.
"Dude, did you see the news? A bus driver was found stabbed to death." Eli's text reads. Miguel goes on autopilot. He puts his phone in his pocket and begins sprinting towards his apartments. The adrenaline was pumping in his veins as he ran. Miguel eventually made it and began running to his apartment door.
"Mom! Yaya!" Miguel shouts as he bangs on the door. To his surprise, the door began to open. Someone left it unlocked. Miguel enters and finds the place to be suspiciously quiet.
"Mom? Yaya?" Miguel asks as he begins looking around. Some gut feeling told him that something was off. Miguel slowly opens the door to his room and sees nothing. Miguel turns to his mom's room and opens the door.
"Hello?" Miguel asks. Nothing. Not a sound. Maybe this was all a big prank. Just as Miguel was thinking this, a figure appears behind him and stabs him in the upper back. Miguel screams in pain and the figure rips the knife out. Miguel falls over and turns around to see someone dressed up as Ghostface. Ghostface attempts to stab Miguel again but Miguel kicks Ghostface in the chest. Ghostface stumbles back but doesn't seem to be too effected. Miguel stands up and yelps in pain. Ghostface runs towards Miguel, knife in hand, ready to stab Miguel again. However, Miguel kicks the knife out of Ghostface's hand and then pushes him onto the ground. The wound on Miguel's back begins to burn even more and Miguel drops down in pain. Both Miguel and Ghostface get up as both try to get to the knife first. Ghostface manages to pick up the knife and punch Miguel in the face. This punch was powerful and Miguel is forced to back up a bit. Did this guy know Karate? Miguel quickly delivers a roundhouse kick to Ghostface's face and then a spinning back kick into his chest. Ghostface collapses onto the ground and drops the knife. Miguel picks up the knife and stands over Ghostface. Miguel is about ready to unmask him before Ghostface headbutts Miguel. Miguel falls over and drops the knife. As Miguel is laying on his back, Ghostface gets on top of him stabs him in the chest. Miguel screams in agony. Ghostface then attempts to stab Moguel in the throat. However, Miguel grabs onto the knife, causing his hands to bleed.
"PLEASE! STOP!" Miguel pleads. Ghostface seems unaffected and continues to try and press the knife downwards. However, Miguel moves the knife slightly to the right and the knife goes directly into his shoulder. Miguel yelps in pain once again but is able to knee Ghostface in the chest and then punch him in the face. As he falls over, Miguel takes the opportunity to get up and run past him, the knife is still stuck in his shoulder. However, as Miguel jumps over Ghostface, Ghostface grabs one of Miguel's legs, causing him to fall over. Miguel falls onto the knife, causing the blade to sink deeper into his shoulder. Miguel screams bloody murder as Ghostface approaches him. He turns Miguel onto his back and rips the knife out. With the last of his strength, Miguel gets back on his stomach and tries to crawl away. However, Ghostface raises the knife and plunges it into Miguel's back. He stabs Miguel once more and then stops when sirens are heard outside. Ghostface quickly runs out of the apartment, leaving behind a devastating scene.
Later…
"I don't get it. Miguel told us to come to the skatepark right?" Johnny asks.
"Yeah, that's what he texted me." Carmen says. Johnny, Carmen, and Rosa had been waiting for Miguel for about an hour and half.
"I don't get it. Why would Miguel say he was leaving for Mexico, and then tell us to meet him here?" Johnny asks.
"I don't know. He said it was urgent." Carmen says.
"Something about this just feels…off." Johnny says. For some reason, he began to worry about Miguel. Just then, Carmen gets a call. Her eyes widen as she reads the caller ID. She quickly answers the phone.
"Hello? Yes?" Carmen answers frantically. That's when Johnny hears it. Carmen screams in anguish and despair. Johnny hadn't heard her scream like that since…Miguel got peralized. Johnny can feel his heart race.
"What…what happened?" Johnny asks with lots of nervousness in his voice.
"Miguel…he's…" Carmen begins to say.
"Please…I have to know." Johnny says.
"He's…he's in critical condition at the hospital! Carmen says with tears in her eyes.
"Why? How badly is he hurt?" Johnny asks.
"He was stabbed five times!" Carmen shouts before collapsing into Rosa's arms. The whole world begins to spin as Johnny processes what he just heard.
"No…not again…not again." Johnny says to himself before tearing up.
