Chapter 74

October 4th

Ryuzaki stayed the rest of the night but made sure to sneak back to the surveillance area in the morning. We had a good time together and some well needed rest afterward, but before we knew it we found ourselves back at our desk and back to work, our short reprieve, not long enough.

The screens show Misa as she gets ready for her movie shoot. Mogi, Matsuda, myself, Ryuzaki and Light are at computers working on different files, in that order, from left to right.

Matsuda sighs. "One less person…" My heart aches slightly and I give Matsuda a look but he ignores me and continues. "It's sad with such a large building. Plus, Mogi hardly ever speaks." I chuckle at his jab at Mogi. It's not like he's wrong, Mogi is the strong silent type, he does talk, but very rarely.

"I found another one." I look over at Light's computer and see multiple windows open. "September 10th, slipped and fell at his home and died from the resulting head injury. Junichi Yaibe, Iidabashi Division Manager for Otomo Bank. He was scheduled to take over as president next month and was widely known as the best man in the Otomo Organization. Not only that, but three days ago, the Otomo Bank Company Director, Tokio Yakoda, was caught embezzling. He hasn't been arrested yet, but if the recent pattern holds, he'll be killed by Kira or commit suicide soon...Otomo Bank is in crisis and at this rate, Yotsuba Bank will surpass them as the country's largest…"

I fold my arms as I listen. "Wow, that's some pretty rotten luck…"

"Bad luck or Kira?" Ryuzaki puts his thumb to his mouth, thinking. An image of him in ecstasy floats through my mind and makes me blush, but I quickly squash it.

"September 10th was a Friday, correct?" The Chief stands from the couch with a few papers in hand and comes over to stand between Ryuzaki and Light. "We've overlooked a simple thing. I reexamined our data and noticed that the deaths convenient to Yotsuba are concentrated on the weekend." Matsuda 'hmms' as the Chief continues. "Among the deaths in the last three months the accidental deaths were scattered at first, but now more and more have been Friday night and Saturday. This includes the three heart attack deaths we first noticed." The Chief pauses and Matsuda is impressed as per usual.

"Wow, great work Chief! Not even Light, Suzuki, and Ryzaki noticed that."

In my defense, I've looked at those charts for so long that the names and dates have all blended together at this point…

"How many times do I have to tell you, I'm not your Chief anymore." The Chief scolds Matsuda, but he's not phased.

"You'll always be the Chief to me."

Light looks at Ryuzaki and I. "The murders are being concentrated during the weekend…why?"

"That is rather odd…If these deaths are connected to Kira then that would mean Kira can kill by means other than heart attacks. If that were the case, then he'd spread them out randomly to make them harder to detect…is there a meaning behind this? Is this not Kira's work?" Ryuzaki ponders this new information, but I have another theory.

"Let's call this Kira, Kira the 3rd …If we separate them it makes sense as to why their M.O's changed. And maybe this Kira just isn't as smart as the others. Having his deaths concentrated on the weekend when previous Kira's killed throughout the week seems more like a slip up to me than an intentional change…the original Kira would never have made such a stupid mistake." They all look at me, and Ryuzaki 'hmms'.

"That's also a distinct possibility…"

"Regardless, this is a valuable find Dad, nice work." Light looks back at the Chief who smiles.

"I'm not going to take a backseat to you youngsters just yet. I need to pull my weight." Ryuzaki get's a serious look on his face.

"We're still not sure if Kira is in Yotsuba or is just using them…but we also have no proof he's actually involved at all…However we'll continue to operate under the assumption that this is the work of Kira and we will investigate Yotsuba thoroughly."

Mogi comes up behind us and sets a huge stack of papers between Light and Ryuzaki. "I've completed the Yotsuba Employee list, home and abroad." My eyes go wide.

"There's no way that many people work for Yotsuba."

"This is nearly 300,000 people, it's amazing that Mogi could complete the task so quickly, great work!" Light's extremely impressed with Mogi, and so am I.

"Actually, Mogi has been extremely efficient since the beginning." Ryuzaki adds this and I turn to Matsuda and I can just see the wheels turning in his head, but before I can ask him what he's thinking about, a phone rings.

He jumps, slightly startled. "Oh. That's my manager phone." He answers it as Light, Ryuzaki, and the Chief start going over the employee list. I'm the only one paying attention to him.

"Let's go, Matsui." I hear my alias last name come out of our speakers and look up at the monitors; Misa's on the phone, she must be talking to Matsuda.

They hang up a second later and Matsuda starts to walk away. "I'd like to help, but I gotta go." He seems bummed out.

"See you later Matsuda." I wave goodbye, producing a smile.

"Later, Suzuki." I turn back around to focus on what the others are doing.

"But, it would be difficult to increase our members now. I can't imagine many would quit the police to assist us." The Chief makes a 'hmm' sound, and I'm not really sure what I've walked into.

Ryuzaki shakes his head. "We can't use the police. If an officer came in saying he had quit, I'd assume he was a spy." He kiboshes the idea as per usual. "Watari."

The computer clicks. "Yes?"

"Can you call Aiber and Wedy?" I raise an eyebrow.

Aiber and Wedy? Who are they?

Watari seems just as confused. "Huh, I know their current locations, but do you plan to show your face to them?"

"We already have a level of trust between us and with a big case like Yotsuba, it would be complicated to have to contact them through you. I wouldn't be able to explain my thoughts as well."

The computer clicks again. "I understand, I'll get right on it."

Ryuzaki and I glance at each other at the same time and I can't control my curiosity. "Aiber and Wedy?"

He shrugs. "You'll meet them soon enough. I've worked cases with them in the past and feel as though they could be of assistance."

"Well, whatever, I guess."

Light takes a quarter of the stack of Yotsuba employees, so does the Chief and then I do, leaving another quarter in front of Ryuzaki. I sigh deeply and start putting the information into the computer wondering how much more fun being Misa's manager would have been.

Hi there, I have returned...let's see what i've missed.

Comments-

Little Sunflower1 - chapter 71 - this chapter was really lovely. You did a good job describing the feelings your character is going through. Man you're such a good writer.

A.) Awe thank you so much. It was actually a way for me to cope with some stuff that happened IRL...a friend of mine tried to end his life on easter and i found out that monday morning at work...i just remember being ok one minute and then the next minute i felt like my heart was going to explode and i had a mini panic attack in the break room. It hit so quickly it was like i had been hit by a wave, emotions just knocking my legs right from under me. He did recover and he's doing much better now, but it was...a week, maybe two that he was hospitalized...

cloudlessky - chapter 71 - i loved this chapter! the kittens part made my heart break cus i have rescued a couple of kittens before and saying goodbye to them after awhile was very hard. also i don't think it was ooc for suzuki to react that way, she's been through a lot and all of us break down after so much stress. can't wait to see what u have in store for the future chapters! 3

A.) Oh good, i'm glad my vent into a chapter seemed to work out in my favor ^^ i always feel like my characters are angry a lot because i tend to write when i have a serious emotion and it leaks into the story. I'm glad you're excited, stay tuned.

hateme101 - chapter 72 - so sad about the other kittens

A.) Yeah...i feel horrible but i thought it might make for a good story.

Little Sunflower1 - chapter 72 - awwww I love this chapter, I thought it was sweet. and I love cats so much so it made feel both sad and warm. I wanted to just gush on how I love your writing and work. This is what I needed to make my day better. Thank you for updating.

A.) So glad you liked it, a happy ending to a horrible situation.

Little Sunflower1 - chapter 73 - I love the way you wrote this, Although big question how the hell do you not get embarrassed wiring scenes like that, I would die of embarrassment writing this. Thank you for writing this wonderful chapter. I hope to read more, but no pressure, make sure to keep yourself well and that you can take breaks if need be.

A.) XD i do get embarrassed as i'm writing it, but after you write it out twice you get numb to it lol. I have a bit more and another chapter like his but worse coming soon, so everyone stay reading. I've been struggling with a lot of stuff lately...it's gotten pretty bad, that's why there's a break but...it should get better soon.

Look's like that's it for now. Thanks to everyone who's put up with my shit thus far. We're doing pretty good chugging along with the story, i hope to finish it soon. I'm just stuck on 77 and haven't touched it in a while...but i'll finish it in a bit. My thought was that maybe the story would wrap up by Chapter 90 and then have an alternate ending chapter, but we'll see what happens. Can you imagine, 100 chapters? That would be crazy. Well, see y'all later 3
