Allison POV
I fiddled with my wedding band, twirling it around my finger, listening to the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor hooked up to Luther. He was breathing, unassisted. And because of that, I could breathe again.
When Luther fell off that balcony, I was sitting in the den on a couch, talking to him as he rumbled around looking through a bookshelf up above me. We were laughing together. And then he lost his balance, and as he fell through the air, it was as if time slowed down. My heart dropped, I had thrown myself from the couch, and then he hit the ground. He wouldn't move. The blood. Have mercy, the blood.
Klaus had lifted Annie up off the floor and out of the room as a scream erupted from my mouth. Vanya rushed around, speechless. Diego called an ambulance. Then Vanya called Five. And I froze.
But that was all over now. My Luther was here with me, alive and breathing, all thanks to something miraculous. To Annie. She'd done nothing but placed her right hand on his chest, and then he'd woken up, as if he'd never been dead. I owed my husbands life to my niece whom I'd only met today.
His chest moved up and down, and the motion calmed me with every rise and fall. He couldn't die. No. He didn't even know yet.
I was going to tell him on Christmas. We would have all been at our family get together, gathered around the tree, stuffed full with comfort food, and I was going to spill the beans in some cute way. I hadn't figured out exactly how yet, but I still had twelve days to get it figured out.
I anticipated his excitement. He was going to be so happy. And when he fell, a terrible future passed through my mind. Going through it all alone. Luther never involved, gone. I was broken within seconds after he fell. And then, Annie came along, and when she revived Luther, she revived the hope for our future.
I placed a hand on my lower stomach, which had started to come naturally to me. I'd known for four weeks now. I was twelve weeks along, as explained to me by my doctor. I'd slipped away one day to go and get an appointment, not wanting to tell him and get his hopes up only for it to be a false alarm. But when the pregnancy was confirmed, I decided I would wait until a special time to tell him. How convenient, I thought, that it was so close to Christmas.
Vanya walked into the room, carrying a takeout box in her hands.
'Hey sis.'
'Hey. I brought you some food. I thought you might be hungry by now.'
I was starving, and nausea still lingered in my stomach from all the stress I'd been through. I can imagine stress like that is terrible on a baby. I knew I'd need to get checked out again to make sure it was okay.
'Thank you, that's really thoughtful of you.', I thanked her, as she handed me the white styrofoam container. I set it down on the bedside table.
'Can you believe this?'
'That he's alive?'
'Yeah, and the stuff with Annie? I mean, he was gone ... I can't imagine. I'm so sorry you had to see that, Allison.'
A moment passed in silence, and I nodded.
'It felt like I couldn't breathe. Like I was screaming, yet nothing would come out. I felt so utterly helpless.'
Vanya shook her head and folded her hands together as she pulled up a chair next to me, at the side of the hospital bed. Luther's heart monitor continued beeping steadily. I focused on it, and it soothed any anxiety I had left.
I opened the box of food. Ah, Chinese. Precisely what I'd been craving. Opening the plastic wrapped fork package, I dug it into the rice and took a large bite. Luther loved Chinese food too. Well, Luther loved every food. One thing about him that never failed to crack me up. Vanya sat by my side, silent as we both watched over Luther and I ate. I should tell her. I took a deep breath.
'Vanya?'
'Yeah sis?'
'I'm pregnant.'
She turned her head to me, a smile forming on her lips, stunned and in shock for just a moment.
'Allison, oh my gosh! Oh my- holy crap! I can't believe it, that's great!', she responded, her voice volume never changing but her tone reflecting her surprise. 'Since when?'
'Twelve weeks. But you're the only one that knows.'
'You mean Luther doesn't know?'
'No, I was saving it for Christmas. But I don't want to wait anymore, now.'
She smiled toothlessly. She looked so truly happy.
'I'm so happy for you, Allison. You're going to be a great mother. I know you will.'
I nodded, smiling, staring down into my rice. I was suddenly hit with a painful memory, and my expression sombered.
That's what Raymond had said. Gosh, he wanted to be a father so badly. He would gush and go on all the time, bragging about how I'd be the best mother, about how our children would be gorgeous and smart and bold. I'd wanted it as badly as him. But I didn't get that time with him. We weren't even married for a year. I loved Luther with all my heart, but remembering Raymond made that same heart ache.
'Gosh, what a day.', Vanya said, rubbing her temples.
'No rest for the Hargreeves siblings.'
'Man, we really can't catch a break, can we?', she asked, laughing very lightly.
'No. Never. I was starting to wonder how things were going so smoothly, and then Klaus showed up as a father.', I laughed.
'Holy heck, Allison, it was so hard to keep that under wraps.', Vanya said, her laugh picking up. Whenever Vanya laughed and smiled, it made me want to as well. It was infectious, and I was glad to see it, because she never did much of it when we were kids. 'And he told me over a phone call.'
'First phone call in four years and you announce you've got a kid out of the blue, what a Klaus move.', I poked. We both laughed loudly.
The others all came flooding in to the room, hearing the laughter and recognizing that it was safe to enter now. They saw us smiling, and smiled in return.
Might as well spill the news to them, too. We all needed a bit of a stress reliever right now.
'Well guys, looks like Klaus isn't the only one of us who's a parent, now.'
'Wait, what?', Dolores questioned, her enthusiasm giving me joy. I liked Dolores. She was good for Five.
'Allison, what do you mean?', Diego asked, narrowing his eyes.
'Wait, Allison are you-?'
'Believe it.', I answered them.
The room erupted in joyous banter, congratulations, and so many hugs. An hour ago, we were all sitting in silence fearing for our brother's life. And now, we were celebrating a new one.
Klaus gave me a tight hug, patting my head.
'Aw, now I'm not the only one of us that gets to be a screwed up parent!'
'Klaus!'
We all laughed, and shared a lighthearted moment. I could tell by all their faces, we hadn't felt so happy together in years.
And we were all gathered around Luther, celebrating relief, delightfully surprised by how our family was evolving. Klaus had a daughter, Five was with Dolores, and I had a baby on the way. Diego smiled like I hadn't seem him do in years, Vanya laughed and clutched hands with Klaus, who danced around the room, Five and Dolores stood happily together as he pulled her close to himself with an arm wrapped around her shoulder. And in that moment, for the first time ever, I believe the Hargreeves siblings were as perfect as we could possibly be.
