Dustin sighs as he locks up his ship and heads into the town of this terra, looking for the explorer's guild. He hopes he can sell the scrap he salvaged and maybe get paid for the pictures he took of the creature he had seen with Cyclonis.
Luckily, he didn't need to go far to find one in Cyclonia territory. He heads in and sees it seemed to be like a tavern layout. On a bulletin board seemed to be job listings. Most likely for ships looking for crew, Dustin figured as he made his way over to the bar. "Come back in a few more years if you are looking for a drink kid," the bartender says, looking at him.
Dustin smiles. "Nah. I want to find some crew here," Dustin informs, before showing his membership card.
"I see," the bartender says, setting down a glass and bringing out a form. "Please fill out what you are looking for, and we will see if anyone is available," the bartender says, seemingly figuring out Dustin was new to this.
Dustin takes the form and looks it over. 'Number looking for…hum?' Dustin thinks as he mulls over the question thinking on how much his ship can handle. 'Depending on the amount for food, and equipment…taking space into consideration…two. I got to thank dad for teaching me stuff like this,' Dustin thinks as he writes the number. 'Now…they should be specialized…a gunner would be very helpful, seeing as Cyclonis gave me two cannons for my ship. The other…someone who is strong and a veteran sailor would be ideal,' Dustin thinks, writing it down on the application form and hands it in. It was only later he realized he only put gunner for one and not veteran sailor and gunner.
Dustin waited for hours to see if any results came up. None came, so he retired to his ship, thinking this could be a bust. Only to find that the next day, he had a hit for a gunner, and they were on the terra as well. Dustin is skeptical, though. This long if they had a good list and…why is the pay considered small here? That has to be an error in paperwork if Dustin is reading the amount correctly.
However, he didn't want to look a gift sky shark in the mouth, so he headed back to the guild to see what his call-out had caught. He steps into the building and finds it almost the same as last time. With a few different patrons here and there while half were still drunk off their asses or sleeping. Dustin hopes none of them is the intended new crewmate.
"Ha! Four! Pay up!" Dustin hears and looks to see some card games going on. And the one calling out the win is a raptor with a very crude knife stabbed into the cards on the table. The other humans and wallop groan before sliding over their crystals and money over to him. This raptor doesn't even look large and in charge. He does, however, seem to possess a smaller build than the ones his father faced, and even his spines are shorter too. The raptor then growls and turns to see Dustin staring at him. "What? You want to lose your crystals and money also?"
Dustin scoffs and walks away to not deal with the trouble, especially this early in his flight alone. The raptor spits to the side as everyone at his table grumbles and leaves to let him enjoy his spoils. Dustin sighs as he steps up to the counter and taps the bar table. "Dustin. The ship is The Last Crux. I was told there is someone who can join me," he asks the bartender.
"Round call for those looking to join The Last Crux!" the bartender calls.
"That be me!" the raptor calls excited as he stands and holds his knife up before realizing who would be the owner standing at the bar. "Oh…"
"Fuck," both curse.
"Really?"
"Seriously?"
"Redo."
They both said their lines together each time and made it seem like a small comedy. To which even those that lost at the last card game laughs to the side where the raptor can't hear.
"He's a new one from his terra. Just off his first hunt and now has to find one himself. He figured this way would be fastest and get a payout of it," the bartender explains, idly sorting his glasses.
Dustin sighs. "Alright…how much experience do you have at being a gunner, and how much do you have at sailing?" Dustin asks.
"I can shoot easy. Sailing…not so much," the lizard grumbles a bit annoyed at getting this guy.
"He already signed up, correct?" Dustin asks the bartender.
The bartender gives a sharp nod as he wonders if this will be the fifth disagreement this week.
"Right…any hits for the other one?" Dustin asks.
"Yeah, but it's from the branch from terra Wallop. You will have to head there," the bartender informs.
'For once, I am thinking of rushing there if this raptor is too hot-headed,' Dustin sighs and massages the side of his head. "Okay. Come on, man. Let's get you settled in," he offers while turning and walking away.
"His name is Viper," the bartender informs.
"Viper. Shall we?" Dustin asks, offering his hand out.
"I guess I did sign up for this," Viper says, walking over and grabbing a spear.
Dustin slowly closes his hand as he notices the spear is also crudely made. Almost as if the weapons were crafted by an inexperienced hand…did he make his weapons for his 'hunt'? "The ship is this way," he says, leading him back to his ship. "There are a few simple rules to follow. Anyone can do it if they know why not to. Such as with me, you better make sure you carry a parachute at all times."
The trip to Wallop felt a bit long as before, which left Dustin to give Viper a quick tutorial on sailing and what to do in emergencies. To Dustin's surprise, Viper was very proficient with the cannons as on their way to terra Gale; they were attacked by two sky sharks, which allowed Dustin to pilot the ship as Viper managed to score a bullseye, killing one of the sky sharks. The other one made it on the deck where Viper fought and ended its life with his spear. The rest of the way, they were eating on sky shark meat. Dustin found they are chewy and delightful if they have been through a storm cloud a lot. Once at terra Gale Dustin went straight to the smelter and bargained with them. Viper sat back and watched as Dustin negotiated for a bit of cash and a few wind crystals.
After unloading all the scrap, they stocked up on a few provisions and set off again. From Gale, it took nearly three weeks to make it to terra Wallop. Viper was a bit surprised how hard it was to get to land on the terra. After being informed that they were there to pick up someone who accepted a job posting from the exploration guild did the Wallops finally let them land.
"Hard headedness. Got to love it," Dustin mumbles as he walks past the raptor. Viper stares out the window to an approaching group of wallops. The annoyance, in the beginning, has finally died down to something of a dull knock. Viper has shown his skills in being very useful for the crew, so Dustin can worry less about finding more crew members.
"Now, while here, leave your weapon on the ship and follow me. I have been here a few times, so I know a bit about the customs. We mostly want to get the crew member, get resupplied, and check and see what delivery jobs we can pick up from the guild," Dustin informs while shutting down the engines.
Viper gives a low growl that Dustin can barely hear, but he got the gist of. Dustin sighs and starts to let him follow down into the cargo hold and the ramp. Upon exiting the ship, the two crew members are approached by the wallop group. "Hello," Dustin greets, smiling. "We are here to make some deliveries and pick up a crew member."
"Papers," the wallop demands but stops when Dustin shows him his identification.
Dustin gives an innocent smile. "I believe everything should be in order. Heck, even your crew can grab your cargo already."
The wallop motions for those behind him to start doing that as Dustin and Viper head toward the local guild branch.
Viper slowly glances around the area and notes how the buildings look structurally stable. Viper doubts that a few cannon shots can take these down easy. And would be even tougher if the wallops kept reinforcing it. So he does not doubt in his mind that if it comes to it, anyone can be slaughtered by the wallops.
When they entered the guild building, Viper noticed that the bar area was mostly filled with wallops drinking. One group was chanting, "Chug, chug, chug," as one wallop seemed to be drinking a whole barrel.
Viper slowly raises a scaled eyebrow as he wonders if their new member is one of these guys. "He should be here somewhere," Dustin says out loud as he kept leading Viper around the place. Their path takes them between tables and sleeping drunk wallops, though rarer than regular bars. However, they both suddenly came to a stop, and Viper looks around to see if he spots their new crew member. "Rorack, I assume?" Dustin asks the one older wallop sitting alone and drawing on some paper in a table against the wall. His location is far enough away from the rest of the crowd.
The wallop, hearing that, turns to them and gets up. Viper felt his scales lock up as the imposing man rises above their heads. The two crane their heads and look up to the considerably massive wallop as they see some cuts on his face, his horn slightly chipped, and finally his hands having numerous scars all over them. "Who's asking?" The wallop's deep voice reverberates throughout the human and raptor's chest.
"Captain Dustin. The one you signed up with," Dustin informs, making Viper look at him in surprise as Dustin didn't seem as intimated like he was.
The wallop sighs and rubs his head with his hand. "Took you long enough. Now I know you have a fast enough ship," Rorack mentions, and that made Dustin smile to where Viper wonders if he entered a mad world for a second.
"You are experienced. I will need that. Our gunner here is very green when it comes to sailing," Dustin informs.
Rorack smirks down to the raptor, and he gives a toothy grin when he saw the tail stiffen up at his gaze. "Rorack. Your new quartermaster," he greets, holding out his burly hand to the lizard.
Viper gives a nervous gulp before reaching out and grasping his hand. "Viper."
"Now we need a job. Preferably a small delivery one that takes us to terra Mesa," Dustin says.
Rorack chuckles with a deep tremble. "There should be a few that are available. You can check with the guild master."
Dustin nods. "I'll go speak to him. Viper, lead our new member back to the ship and show him around," he orders before walking away.
Viper swings his tail to the side and looks to him with a dumbfounded look on his face. Rorack, while watching this, has an amused smile on his face. Viper then sighs and looks back to the wallop and then his clothing. It seems that Rorack went with scattered metal pieces on his shoulders and torso while having the same ragged stitched clothing everyone seems to wear though Viper does spot one with writing that was covered slightly under his chest piece.
"This way," Viper hisses and starts to lead Rorack away back towards the ship.
