Chapter 9: New Job
I woke up today early in the morning to start doing some sword training, but I was too distracted, completely stuck in my thoughts. The reason for that was that the dreaded event that I was waiting for finally happened. Asia had been excommunicated from the church two days ago. I was on a job for the past four days, and when I came back, I heard a lot of people gossiping about this incident.
I didn't even know how to react because I definitely didn't want to get involved with her at the start, but as time passed, I unknowingly got attached to her. I at least wanted to give her a last farewell before she left, but I guess I can't do that anymore. We probably won't meet ever again, so all I could do was wish her well in my mind.
Now that she has left, there is less chance for me to get directly involved in the main plot, so I guess I'm partly grateful. Still, I'm 16 now so there's only a year left before the main story is going to start. All I have to do is to avoid Xenovia, focus on training, and maybe find a chance to leave the church later on.
After I finished up with my sword training in the morning, I was going to meet up with Sister Anna. I haven't seen her for almost a year because of how busy both she and I were. I took a shower, put on a white shirt and black pants, and headed out to meet her in front of the Vatican.
I saw her standing at the entrance, still wearing the traditional nun outfit that she usually wears. As soon as she saw me, she smiled and waved at me.
"Yo, how's it been?" I lazily waved back.
"I've been pretty busy training the new recruits. So, how are you doing, Mr. Executor?"
"Hah? What's with that name?" I looked at her in confusion.
"That's what people have been calling you recently, you know. Looking at how many jobs you've done in a short amount of time, it's only natural." She informed me with a bright smile.
"Seriously? It sounds very dumb," I told her in embarrassment.
We laughed a bit, and after a short pause, she asked again.
"So, how have you been recently?"
"Well... it's been the same old routine of completing jobs," I replied with confusion.
"You know that's not what I'm asking. You're worried about Asia, right?"
"Hmm… Well, I can't say I'm not sad, but there's nothing I can do about it right now," I smiled bitterly
'Or more like I don't really want to get more involved.'
"I... can't exactly disagree with that. BUT I'm sure she'll be fine. She is very capable after all." She tried to reassure me in her own way.
"I hope so."
…
I hung out with Sister Anna the entire day, just socializing and listening to her gossip. Most of the things she said weren't really relevant, but I did hear some interesting information that piqued my interest.
One was about how a genius exorcist called Siegfried left the church and disappeared a year ago, and the other was about the excommunication of Valper Galilei, which happened many years ago.
It was quite interesting to hear her experience with Valper Galilei because she had seen him around quite a lot in the Vatican when she was younger. Everyone believed that he was a kind old man, but it turned out to be completely wrong after people found out about his cruel experiments.
Personally, I found the topic very intriguing. It just told me that not everyone's character is as it seems from the outside. Of course, that is just common sense, but even then, some people fail to understand that.
A whole week passed with me just continuing to keep training. I didn't want to rest even for a day; the more I trained, the more I honed my skills, which is what I believed. My little week-long break suddenly came to an end, and I was called to the bishop's office again.
It was for an emergency investigation mission in the city of Sighisoara in Romania. A lot of people suddenly and mysteriously disappeared throughout the week, and no one knew anything about it. The church suspects that this was a case involving the supernatural, but no one was certain.
"That's why your job is to investigate the strange happenings that have been happening," the Bishop explained with a serious face.
"Yes, I understand," I responded without hesitation.
Doing all these missions over the years might have changed me a bit. It's weird because taking these kinds of dangerous jobs no longer makes me hesitate. Of course, I feel bad when I kill other beings, but it is something that is necessary, so it had to be done. I've gotten very good at putting on a mask and suppressing my feelings so that I can finish my job more efficiently.
After taking the mission, I left the office and immediately set out for my destination. Usually, it would take me a couple hours if I took a plane, but I had another method now. I learned some basic knowledge about teleportation magic that I picked up in one of my jobs, so it greatly shortened my travel time. I had already been to Romania before, so I knew the location, so all I had to do was set up a teleportation circle to go directly to the city.
On this clear night, the moon shone brightly over the city. As usual, like in every job, I found myself patrolling the streets and looking for anything unusual.
Walking around in the city made me a bit nostalgic. This place greatly inspired the city of Trifas from Fate. As a major weeb who liked anime, this was a monumental moment. Even though my face didn't let out any kind of emotion, in my heart I was slightly excited like a fanboy.
It took a moment to calm myself down before I started to pay attention to my surroundings more.
That's when I noticed something was really weird.
The night was quiet. Too eerily quiet.
It felt like I was walking in the middle of a completely silent forest. Normally in a city, there would at least be some little noise or action that would make it seem more active, but instead, the city seemed dead.
'Perhaps people are afraid to go out at night due to the recent deaths?'
With the city being this empty, surely there's something shady going on somewhere. The thought brought a frown to my face.
I had already circled the city once, and I was going to head back when a figure suddenly appeared in the alley behind me.
"H…help…Mons…"
It was a man wearing a grey suit. He carried a broken staff in his hands, and his body was covered in huge lacerations that were slowly bleeding out.
From the moment I saw him, I knew that he wasn't normal at all. Even though he seemed to be human, I could sense that his magic power was much higher than that of an average person.
There were only two options here. Either I let him die or I help him. The second option, frankly, seemed much more troublesome, but it is probably the best choice right now.
"Y…you…please…he…lp…me"
He approached me while limping, with intense desperation written all over his face. Stumbling on a rock, he lost balance and fell onto the ground
Before he fell, I grabbed him and held him up.
"You, what happened?"
"T-That…Vamp…ire…Tepe—"
Before he could finish speaking, he passed out.
"Hey, mister, the hell did you say?" I tapped him on the shoulder, but he didn't seem to wake up.
"Haah… at least finish before passing out."
Sighing at my predicament, I took out some bandages and treated the man to stop his bleeding. Carrying him on my shoulder, I took him to the church nearby.
*Thud*
*Thud* *Thud*
I pounded on the door of the church. It took a few minutes, but someone finally opened the door and peaked out.
"Umm… I apologise for knocking on your door, but there's a serious emergency, so could you let us in?"
The person opened the door wider at my words, revealing a middle-aged woman in a nun's habit.
"Are you an exorcist from the Vatican?" She inquired seriously.
"Ah, yes, could you let me in? This guy is seriously injured; he might need some treatment."
"Yes, you can lay on the bed in the room at the back."
"Thanks," I quickly uttered before I swiftly carried the injured man inside.
The church on the inside was like every generic church you could think of. It was nowhere near the level of the buildings in the Vatican.
Finding the room in the back, I went in and put the man on the bed. The nun who lived in the church followed me in and looked at the man I brought skeptically.
"Now, who are you? She asked.
"Ah, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Tristan Beatrice, and I'm sort of an exorcist."
"Oh! You're the "Executor" right?" She opened her eyes in recognition.
"Haha… Have I become that known?" I awkwardly laughed.
"Yes, you're quite popular among the members of the Church, you know?"
"Is…that so? Are you also a member of the Vatican?"
"Oh…yes my name is Madalina. I used to work at the Vatican when I was younger." She introduced herself when she realized she had forgotten.
"I see, could I leave this man in your care for now? I have some urgent business right now. I'll be back in a bit."
"Uh, yes, that's fine."
I immediately cast a holy barrier over the man as a precaution that would only activate when someone malicious tried to harm him. It is hard to trust someone you just met, so this was just an extra layer of protection.
"I'll be leaving now."
I left the Church and headed back to the spot where I first saw the man. Instead of waiting a few days for the man to wake up, I thought it would be a better idea to check out the area where I spotted the guy.
I checked the alley from which I saw him come out from and found that some magic residue was still left.
'Good for me, I don't need to look everywhere now.'
Grabbing a random stone on the road, I inscribed a rune that looked like a "B".
"Now go"
The stone glowed, and it came to life and slowly floated a couple centimeters above the ground. It approached the mana residue and immediately started tracking it. It suddenly sped up and glided on the ground, with me briskly following behind it.
Following the stone, I swiveled through different streets and alleyways and somehow ended up in a shabby and deteriorated area.
I caught up to the stone and saw that it had stopped in front of an isolated mansion. The building looked dilapidated, unlike the other houses in the city. It was surrounded by many dead trees and plants. The walls were covered with many vines hanging off the walls, which just gave it a more lonely and desolate feeling.
…
I walked up to the door at the entrance and kicked it open. What I saw inside could only be described as incredibly inhumane and horrifying. It is not something that a normal person can see without being traumatized or even going insane.
Sticky blood covered the floor and ceiling. There was blood with pieces of flesh stuck all over the wall. The blood seemed to be in a jelly-like form and wriggled around like it was alive.
"Sh*t! What the hell is this?"
I reached into the inside of my coat and pulled out the dagger I had hidden inside. Holding it in my left hand, I proceeded to walk inside.
'This is definitely the work of a vampire. The energy I'm sensing seems to be at least at the ultimate-class level of prana'
Analyzing the situation I walked past the living room to the room in the back. That was where I sensed an amalgamation of energy that seemed to be the cause of everything. As I kept getting closer to the room, the faster the blood started wriggling. It started moving in a rhythm, almost like a beating heart.
*Lub-dub* *Lub-dub*
The living room's sofa, round table, and chair were covered with the same disgusting, sticky liquid. The blood started to react more and more as I approached the door to the room. The beating got louder and louder.
*Lub-dub*
*Lub-dub*
*Lub-dub*
*Lub-dub*
Just as I touched the door knob, everything stopped. The entire house fell into silence.
'Damn, what is with this horror movie-esque situation?'
That was the last thought I had as I was thrown back by something slamming into me.
