I want to warn anyone reading this story that due to school starting I may not be writing as much as I used to, but give me time and I will update I don't plan on ditching this story ever. I will update when I can.
Also I am starting to revise, review, and correct the starting chapters because yes I did reread them and some of them have errors I can't ignore, so I will be updating as I correct chapters.
Gabriel's point of view
It had been a two weeks since Chief Stoick had returned to the village, an uneventful two weeks. Dragon training was still underway, but with no Nightmare it was any ones guess on when the final test would be. The villagers were still cautious of us, and us of them. So we helped around as much as we could, while not meddling to much in their affairs. After most of the dragons raid damage had been completed there was little to no reason for us to go to the village anymore.
It was early in the morning the sun barely rising over the horizon. I took in a deep breathe of salt water holding it in my longs for as long as possible until exhaling. I felt the boat shift a little under my feet, but with the ice setting in soon I knew that these movements would become less and less. 'Captain needs to decided what to do soon' I thought, suppressing a shiver as the cold air blew, sinking lower into my fur coat. 'If we don't leave soon we will be stuck here till spring' I thought, staring out to the open ocean. No matter how much our relationship with the Vikings have improved I doubt anyone would be pleased with a long-term stay. 'Halla would' a voice in the back of my head thought. A small smile spread across my face, as I thought about the little dragon tamer.
"That would defiantly be worth staying for" I muttered to myself leaning on the ships rails.
"What would be worth staying" A voice said to the side of me. I didn't jump knowing that there were only three people on this ship that could sneak up on me and hearing that this voice was masculine with an accent it could only be one person.
"Sneaking up on people isn't nice Eagle." I say, not bothering to turn around and face the dark skinned warrior.
"Never said I was nice," he says chuckling walking over to my side leaning against the boats side. "What has you up this early?"
"Just thinking is all" I say with a shrug
"Wouldn't be thinking of a certain chief's daughter now would you" he says with a grin.
I snapped my head to look at the grinning man. My eyes narrowed at him. There were two ways I could go about this. I could deny it and make up an excuse that he wouldn't believe anyways or I could try to give a minimum amount of the truth as possible cause lets face it coming completely clean is not an option. "Maybe I am, is that a problem?" I said a challenge in my voice.
Eagle gave another chuckle shaking his head "ahh young love." It took all my focus to keep the red out of my face.
"It's not like that," I say with a sigh. 'Eagle was always trying to play matchmaker with me.'
"Then what does it look like" he asks, raising an eyebrow at me. "You defend her, you believe in her, you are there for her, you spend all your time with her," he lists casually "is that not young love."
"No, its not" I says, looking at Eagle who was wearing a do tell expression. "Its appreciation." Eagle said nothing so I continued. "I appreciate who she is, and I want her to be her. She wasn't made to be a Viking and I want her to know that it's okay not to be. I think she can do great things by just being her."
"Your appreciation sounds a lot like love to me." Eagle says with a shrug.
"You think two people staring at each other for a moment could be love," I muttered, thinking back to all those love at first sights Eagle claims happen in taverns that we pass.
"Don't sass your elders boy."
"Where is the rest of the crew?" I asked, trying to branch us away from Halla.
"Somewhere" is all Eagle says "Although I know Claudius and Claudia went to go see Halla for morning training." He says nudging me.
"Isn't it a bit early" I say rubbing my arm his elbow is too bony for a light nudge.
"The girl insisted, she's training a lot more, but then she goes off disappearing into the woods." There was a pause; I wasn't taking the bait "The same woods you disappear into." Not going for it. "Both of you are gone for a long amount of time." Don't look at him. "People are starting to talk?"
"What about?" I snapped only to cuss inwardly; I went for the bait.
"Just that you two are getting close is all" Eagle says with a smirk "Why is there something specific they should be saying."
"We just talk Eagle, that's all."
"About what?"
"Just stuff."
"Hmm"
"What are you hoping to find with all these questions?" I ask. It was no surprise that Eagle was asking these question, he always like to know what was going on with everybody. However, this wasn't his casual line of questions, he was searching for something.
"I hoping that the rumors are true"
"Please enlighten me on these rumors."
"Captain and their Chief don't get along very well everyone knows that. If we don't want to get stuck here for all of winter we will have to leave soon."
"What does that have to do with Halla and I?"
"If we leave, what happens to Halla?" Eagle asks,
"She stays here and we leave" I answer no hesitation.
"Would she?" I open my mouth to answer yes, but something stops me. "You said it yourself she isn't a Viking, she's not appreciated. Why stay? Why remain in a place where no one wants you when she can-"
"Come with us" I finished, something tightening in my chest.
Eagle shakes his head "When she can come with you." I open my mouth to deny it, but my tongue seems to have failed in constructing words. "I like the girl, she is definitely one of a kind, but I do not care if she stays or goes, but Captain does and I think so do you." He turns to look at me and for a moment I feel like I'm the little boy he found passed out from starvation on the side of the road. "I don't care one way or another, but I do know this." He places his hand on my shoulder "she makes you happy, and that is something I do care about." We stand there for a moment no one really saying anything, until he ruins the moment by ruffling my hair like a damn child. "You've been through a lot Gabriel, the skriker made sure of that." I bit my tongue we never talk about the skriker, not ever, not on the anniversary of my family's death, never. Flashes of my brother soaked in blood cross my mind, but I can still slightly hear Eagles voice " and although you joke and smile it never reaches your eyes, but when you're with her" He shrugs his hand still on my head "you seem truly happy." He drops his hand to his side sticking one in his pant pocket as he steps back "Maybe you should talk to her about it?" He says walking away. "Claudius should be done kicking her butt by now."
I was left alone with my thoughts, flashes of Halla and my brother starting to overcome my mind. I shook my head, this was ridiculous we were just friends with one hell of a secret. Not liking where my thoughts were going, I went to my room grabbed my bow and arrow and headed to the woods. It was about time I got some training in to.
'Pull, breath, aim. Pull breath, aim' I thought as I fired my arrows at the makeshift targets. I smiled as I heard the satisfying thud of my arrow piercing through wood. SNAP. Grabbing an arrow I turned ready to fire. I was almost disappointed I didn't shoot. Standing in front of me was none other than Ash, the perfect Viking.
"You mind putting that thing down?" He asks, tightening his grip on his axe.
"Do I have to?" I asked back already lowering my bow.
"What are you doing here?" He asks, moving his axe to rest on his shoulder.
"Drinking tea while playing the lute, what does it look like I'm doing." I hadn't meant that to be so harsh and by the raised eyebrow Ash wasn't expecting it either. I always made sure to be calm and playful when dealing with Ash because it made him even madder.
"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the boat." Ash says trying to be casual. I roll my eyes, Ash wasn't casual, he was direct and pushy he didn't know how to act like anything other then a Viking.
"Dragon training over I'm assuming or have you realized the error of your ways and just given up." That sounded slightly more playful, but the edge was still there. Curse Eagle now my whole mood has shifted.
"Over" Ash says his eyes narrowed "Just came out for extra practice so if you don't mind-"
"Right the extra practice to try and keep up with Halla."
Ash's eyes narrow, his shoulders tenses and for a moment I'm glad that I have such an effect on a strong warrior, even if he is a brat at times. "I always practice after training."
"Why? It doesn't look like it's doing you any good?" I should have expected it, I should have seen it coming, and yet I was shocked when Ash's axe landed in the tree trunk closest to me.
"Your right" He says walking over to me. "I missed," He says, pulling the damn thing out of the tree, his face inches from mine even though I was slightly taller than him. There were two ways I could play this, one make a snarky comment and back down walk away or two make a snarky comment and start something. 'Why does number two seem so tempting?' I thought tightening my hand on my bow.
"What's going on?"
Both Ash and I turned to look at our new arrival and I couldn't stop the sigh that slipped passed my lips. 'Of course it was Halla' I thought, my hand twitching.
"Yeah Asha what is going on?" I asked, turning to the Viking, putting the ball in his court.
"Nothing Halla, Gabriel was just leaving" he says through a clenched jaw.
"Really?" She asks, hands on her hip.
For some reason I wasn't satisfied with Ash's answer, 'one time I'm looking for trouble and I can't catch a break. ` "Yeah Halla, I've had enough training for today." I say, walking past Ash, thumping him with my shoulder. I could tell that Ash and Halla where both staring at me.
"Great, than you can come with me." Halla says, sounding excited as she takes my wrist. I could hear Ash grumble to himself, but I didn't care.
"Sure where to?" Based on Halla's sly smile I knew exactly where we were going. "Right" I said, "lead the way."
We walked in silent for a while; Halla probably making sure that Ash wasn't following us "So do you want to tell me what really happened?"
"Don't know what you mean?"
Halla gave me her really looking "are you seriously going to try and lie to me. Do you want me to have Toothless eat you?"
"Pfft you wouldn't do that."
"Don't test me," she says, her arms crossed, but I knew that she wasn't serious. "Besides I want to know if Ash was giving you any trouble?"
"Awe are you going to defend my honor if he was"
"I'm serious what trouble were you getting into?"
"Trouble? Why would you think that?"
"Ash doesn't seem to like you very much, and I may have sharpened his axe not to long ago."
"Don't worry about me Halla, I can take care of myself."
"I know" she says, "I would rather not have to patch you up though."
I snort, "I could take him." Halla gave me a look, "What?"
"You alright?" she asks, stepping out in front of me.
"Of course" I say going around her "Why so you ask."
"Your being…." She waved her hand in front of her "aggressive."
"Me aggressive never" I say continuing to walk.
"I'm serious"
"So am I," I say snapping.
Halla humphed " You know what if your gonna be in a mood maybe its better you don't come." Would never say it out loud, but Halla looks like a chipmunk with food in its mouth when she's upset. Is she even aware that she puffs her cheek when she's angry?
I sigh "its nothing Halla really."
"You're lying"
"True," I say, really not wanting to discuss this morning with her "but if I promise to be in a better mood, will you show me what you wanted to show me."
Halla was silent for a moment and I was a bit afraid that she was gonna tell me to go back to the boat. "Fine" she finally says "but I'm really excited about this, so keep your sour mood to yourself."
"I promise," I say, putting on my best smile.
"Good" she says grabbing my wrist again. "Then let's go slow poke."
Needless to say I was surprised when Halla didn't bring me to the cliffs with the dragon. Instead we went further into the forest heading towards the mountain.
The more we walked, the better I felt. Halla and I falling into our usually groove.
"Alright dragon girl where are you taking me?"
"It's a surprise"
"Why do I feel this is a trap?"
"A trap for what?"
"I don't know, but a pretty girl dragging a charming young man deep into a dark forest its how a lot of fairytales go." I say with a smile. "It doesn't help that the pretty girl has dragons." It took me a moment to realize that I called Halla pretty…twice.
Luckily those comments went over her head. "What type of fairy tales have you been reading?"
I took a sigh of relief before answering. "All of them."
"Well here we are," She says, her voice getting louder with her excitement. I on the other hand was confused. I mean it was a great view of the ocean and in a few hours most likely a very beautiful sunset, but right now I was just looking at waves crash onto the island of Berk.
"What am I looking at?" I finally asked, only to find no one beside me. "Halla" I shouted, but nothing. "She really did come out to kill me," I muttered looking for her. "Halla" I shouted, turning towards the mountains. It was the only place she could be hiding.
"You don't need to yell," I swear as I jumped out of skin. Hallas voice coming from right behind me. 'That's not possible' I thought, slowly turning around 'There's a cliff…' turning around slowly my jaw almost dropped. Halla was sitting on top of Toothless flying a good ten feet from the cliff. A giant smile on Halla's face. "Well?"
I couldn't say anything. She was riding a dragon. Her inventions worked and she was riding a dragon. What the hell was I suppose to say, I couldn't express how impressed, amazed, or speechless I was. Which apparently being speechless wasn't bad, because Halla's smile grew even more. "Awesome right?" I could only nod. "We basically got the hang of this." She says, Toothless shifting underneath. "Well rather then explain it, why don't you just watch. Toothless is getting a bit restless." She says, and before I could reply she was taking off into the sky. I'm not sure how long Halla was flying, but it was amazing to watch. Toothless and her were in sync, every turn and loop was done perfectly, every climb was meet with a roar and a cheer, they were happy. It was like they never wanted to come down. Halla looked like she could stay in the sky forever and Toothless seemed more than happy to share it with her.
They flew until the sun started to set and if it wasn't for Halla peeking back at me every once and a while, I would have thought that they forgot about me. Toothless came close to the mountains, his strong wings slowing as he prepared to land. After Toothless had fully landed, Halla slowly got off of him scratching him behind the ears. "That was…" taking a deep breath "wow."
"It works, it all works" she exclaims her voice higher than normal.
"I had never seen anything like it and I've seen a lot of things." A flash of a skriker passed through my mind and for a moment my smile faltered.
"What's wrong" Halla asked, I blinked for a bit coming back from my nightmare daydream. 'When did Halla get so close' I thought, looking down at her.
"Your hands" I exclaimed, seizing them in my own.
"Huh" Halla looked at her hands "Oh, yah I need to wear some type of gloves." She says casually ignoring the frostnip on her hands. They were almost completely red and they felt like ice on my hand.
"Don't act so casual about this," I snapped, "you could get frost bite. Didn't you feel your hands get cold?"
Halla bit her lip "honestly no, I was to busy enjoying the ride, but now that you mention I can't feel my face that well." I looked at Halla's face; her face wasn't completely red like her hands. However, when you push Halla's brown hair out of her face you could see that her cheeks were a deep rosy red.
"Honestly" I said, not even thinking about it I pulled her into a hug, her face buried in my chest, her hands tangling themselves in my thick coat. "Always so reckless"
"I am not" is muffled.
"You keep telling yourself that," I mutter into her head with a smile. I could feel Halla start to squirm trying to pull away and I let her.
"Do you trust me" she asks, still in my arms, but no longer buried in my chest.
"Not really" I joke, only to see her start to pout. "Good your face is starting to warm up if you can pout." She glared at me. "You know I do." She grabbed both my hand and I tried not to shiver at the coldness.
"Enough to take you on a ride?" She says with a small radiant lopsided smile, her emerald eyes practically glowing with the setting sun.
"I-" she squeezed my hand probably already seeing my apprehensiveness
"Please" she asks, her smile growing just a tiny bit into a pout. That's when I felt it a flutter in my stomach, followed by a skip of my heart, and my lungs apparently not working. 'Shit Eagle was right.'
Should Gabriel be the first to ride Toothless? I'm curious what you all think.
