Chapter 37
Grinding Sword and Chain
It's been 3 weeks since the day Naruto took Kagura, Loke and Sirius to train them and they are doing well.
Naruto didn't hear anything about his and Laxus's spar from the guild, so he assumed the blonde lightning mage didn't speak about it to anyone.
That's to his benefit as well, as he doesn't need to deal with the guild and mainly the Master. Naruto knew how pissed off Makarov would be if he knew of this so he decided to not see a gift horse in the mouth.
Kagura's training was coming along nicely and she has the gall to mock him into teaching her how to control her magic. Naruto had to train her ground up in it and it was fun. He was surprised by her progress though. He didn't expect she could become that strong in just 3 weeks and appreciated it.
Flashback
"Why run around? Are you afraid that one of the attacks will connect?" Kagura mocked as she tried to hit the fast-moving blonde.
"Heh. You are a decade too young to hit me. Try your best and we will see." Naruto replied and that pushed her to change tactics.
"Gravity Magic: Earth," she called, creating an unbearable downward pressure on Naruto, trying to lock him in place and attack him with her sword drawn.
Naruto used his Earth Style to lighten his weight and when she was about to strike, moved. The attack damaged the area he was in and left a large slash.
But before she could react, he was behind her, with his sword on her neck. "Surrender," he called and Kagura sheathed her sword.
"That's a new move you didn't show me." She pointed as she turned.
"I didn't expect you to use your Gravity magic as well. Why do you stick to one spell? Why not use the various ones I taught you?" He asked curiously.
"I don't want to use them unless needed. Archenemy is more than enough." She strictly said and moved to a tree to rest.
"Thank you for the training. It is very enlightening and beneficial." She thanked and closed her eyes, sitting in the shade.
"What should I say? I'm impressed or keep it up?" He asked rhetorically but didn't get any reply.
Flashback End
Her attitude and the way she took things changed to some extent, being in the hyperactive blonde's company for 3 weeks non-stop, but she still sticks to that no-nonsense strict persona.
While her training was going on well, Loke didn't stop his pestering and Naruto decided to deal with it once and for all. That match was entertaining to the blonde and Sirius.
Few days Ago
"Really? You will allow me to train with Kagura?" Loke asked with heart eyes as Naruto gave in to his pestering.
"Yes, but on one condition." He said with a serious face which made the celestial spirit raise an eyebrow in suspicion.
"I am not the one who came up with it. It's her suggestion." Naruto shrugged. Loke nodded resolutely and Naruto continued.
"She wants to have her peace and doesn't want you pestering people if you lose," Naruto said, trying in his best imitation of Kagura's stern face.
Loke knew Kagura couldn't say that many words in one go, but against all odds, he believed and agreed to it. He resolutely walked in front of her.
To the side, both father and son sat, waiting for the match with excitement. They wanted to see how Kagura dealt with Loke and vice versa and so they sat on a tree to the side and watched with bated breath.
"Ok, yielding or knocking out the opponents ends the match. Begin!" Naruto said from the tree.
Immediately, before Loke's mouth could form any words, a downward pressure fell upon him. Though he stood strong at first, he couldn't bear it.
"Chai-Chain Dome," he wheezed, his chains forming a dome around him. But much to his dismay, his chains didn't help. Due to the chains being made of much thicker material, they buckled to the gravity and increased the force on him.
"I can, can do it!" Loke pushed himself, using his Ring magic this time, creating a Twister in the affected area. To his elation, it worked.
A blast of wind was sent towards Kagura and it didn't show any signs of stopping, not even buckling under her pressure. So she pulled her sword and slashed towards the Twister, dispersing it harmlessly.
"Yield," she said, pointing the tip of her sword at Loke's neck only for a chain to pull her towards him.
"Binding Chain Prison," Loke called, his chains forming around Kagura, restricting her movement and binding her hands. Much to her dismay, they are so fast that she didn't have time to swing her sword to generate a shockwave.
"Chain Kunai," Loke called, creating a Kunai out of chains and pointing it towards Kagura's neck. But he forgot something, his chains are binding, but they don't affect users' magic.
And so when he was reaching her neck, a strong gravity force pushed him backwards, taking him through trees and releasing Kagura from her chain bindings.
"Damn, that was hard. I didn't expect her to master her Gravity magic that well." Naruto said from his perch on the tree.
"Really? She didn't practice her magic till now?" Sirius asked.
"Yes. When I was teaching her about control, she mocked me into teaching her about her gravity magic and I taught. That's how I found out she had gravity magic in the first place." He explained.
"But it's a great improvement for Loke. I didn't expect him to withstand the pressure she put on him and attack her when she was close, which limits a swordsman's options." Sirius said in appreciation.
"You can say that again, he is going nuts and pushing himself far beyond his limits. I'm sure by the end of this, he will be at Natsu's level even without his magic." Naruto said and Sirius nodded in understanding.
"So what now?" Sirius asked.
"What else? Motivate her to stay in our guild at all costs."
"Is she that interesting?" Sirius asked with raised eyebrows.
'I shouldn't have let him train with Loke. Now I don't know what useless things that pervert has taught him.' Naruto sighed.
"You can say that. But most of all, if she goes alone, she will be stuck with that moody face and stern look." Naruto sighed.
"Yeah, they won't suit her." Sirius agreed.
"That's why I want her to stay. You can say she has grown on me with those crude remarks and taunts."
"Hmm, a possible girlfriend?" Sirius asked and Naruto turned to him sharply, his eyes bulging out of his face.
"What!?" He asked, shocked.
"I know everything now! Loke taught me everything!" Sirius said with a toothy smile and Naruto's eyes widened and suddenly tears formed in his eyes.
"I shouldn't have done it. I shouldn't have done it. My innocent little son was spoiled now. I should teach that good for nothing pervert a lesson!" Naruto thundered, hugging Sirius tightly.
"Stop with the dramatics, you! You wantedly didn't teach me anything! I knew it!" He yelled, pointing an accusatory finger towards the dramatic blonde.
"Father, how has it come to this? Where was the cute, innocent, good little Sirius I raised? Where did this crude, accusing and spoiled one come from?" Naruto looked up to the heavens and spoke tearfully.
"Stop it, Tou-chan. I don't this would be painful!" Sirius yelled, talking in his native language. Naruto turned towards him instantly and hugged him, ruffling his hair.
"It's just for fun, Siri. Don't take it seriously. And no. It's not like any girlfriend. I just want another lost soul like us to find a good place to live with good people around her.
What better place is there like that than our guild? Don't you think Gildarts helped us by bringing us here? We both found friends and caring people and a guild to protect. Didn't you observe how it changed you?
Take Loke, for example, he is one like us before we found him. Now he is happy with others. I want that kind of life for her as well. I can understand her quest for revenge.
But I know how far revenge pushes a person in my past with my teammate. It makes them disconnected from the world and live for revenge as their sole purpose. And once they achieve it, you know what happens?" Naruto and Sirius eagerly looked to continue.
"They lose their way. As the very purpose they lived for till then was gone. Only an empty husk of their former self will be left, killing the real self. That's why I don't want Kagura to take that path." Naruto explained. Sirius nodded in understanding.
Unknown to Sirius, Kagura is hearing everything standing at a nearby tree. Though Naruto knew about her presence, he decided to amuse her and explained what he wanted to. Now the choice is hers.
"Ah, I didn't think I could go on such tangents. Where are we? Ah, that useless chain idiot has corrupted my son!" He yelled and hugged Sirius again. Kagura peeked to see a clawing Sirius trying to get out of Naruto's grip.
'So that's why he is adamant about having me with him. I should think about it. I must agree, I learnt a lot from him. Maybe it-' she squashed that thought brutally and walked to her training clearing to practise. The match was over as Loke didn't return.
With Makarov
The diminutive man was trying his best to find something or anything relating to Kagura and her story, but to no avail. It's as if they were purposefully erased from the archives. That rose alarm bells in the old master's head.
'Who can do this? There is nothing here!' He yelled in his head.
"Searching for something, Maki?" An old voice asked. Makarov turned to see his old friend Yajima walking toward him with his perpetual closed eyes.
"Yes, Yajima. How are you?"
"I'm doing fine. Normal life of a Magic Council member." Yajima said as he approached Makarov.
"Searching for something?" He asked again, curious to know what his friend was searching for.
"Yes. I'm here to know something about one of our Guilds temporary members' case and anything reading to it."
"Another new member? How many have you joined this year?"
"It's quite new for us to get these many. But we got few, especially this one Naruto brought."
"Naruto brought? Doesn't he work alone or with this partner Sirius?"
"Usually, yes. But he was going on jobs with the new generation more now and brought this girl from one of them. She is dipped in revenge and wants to have vengeance against the wrongdoers of her village." Makarov explained with a sigh.
"One of the vengeful ones, huh. It's a shame on the council. We couldn't stop another young girl from falling into revenge." Yajima admitted shamefully.
"That's not your fault, old friend. Seems like I can't find anything. I've been searching for 10 days and still can't find it. What's going on here?" Makarov said exasperatedly.
"Huh, it went missing? Let me ask one of the assistants." Yajima said and called one of the assistants to go through the archival records.
While this was going on, in another part of the Magic Council building, a blue-haired man chuckled at the futile effort of old men.
"They can't find it. I erased what little evidence that was left of the raid and by extension kidnapping." Siegrain smirked.
"Is it that important?" Ultear asked, sitting opposite him.
"Of course, I don't want their focus to shift to the Tower now and start another investigation. Until I can influence them more directly." He smirked, envisioning his plan coming into action.
"How long does it take?"
"Maybe next year at best. I just need to do a few things to remove them from office and we have a seat for ourselves." He said in a grandiose fashion.
"What did you decide on this Tobirama? That moron is changing many things in the Council and was granted a seat of office." Ultear said in concern.
"Once I get that position, I'll dispose of him. What he is doing doesn't affect us. So why bother till then? Be patient. Who knows, you might get accepted as well." He said with a widening smile and Ultear nodded.
She couldn't say that's the plan she was betting on till now. But Tobirama is a problem and she needs to deal with that guy one way or another.
That Evening
Fairy Tail Guild Hall
Everyone was present in the Guildhall as it was evening when Makarov came back in a sour mood. What he wants doesn't happen and he didn't find anything about Kagura or anything relating to the attack.
That's when the resident blonde boy wonder chose to talk to the master and approached the tired master.
"Gramps," he called and Makarov looked up to see the work of hope he had in the next generation.
"I want to take Kagura and Loke on jobs. Please stamp on these," Naruto said, extending a few hundred job requests. Makarov's eyes widened at the amount, but he tiredly stamped on all of them.
He knew it was normal for Naruto to go on many jobs at once and bring a lot of money to the Guild. He looked up at the smiling blonde.
"Ok, gramps. Take care of Sirius for me. I'll be leaving." He said and left with a tired Loke and eager Kagura. That surprised him.
He didn't see the girl this eager since the day she came here and during his taps on Naruto's training. 'Maybe there is still hope.' A stray thought came.
He doesn't like losing any of his children. After all, Fairy Tail is his family and every member of the guild is his child. If Kagura decides to leave, he won't stop her, but he wishes she wouldn't.
"Cana, give me some booze," Makarov said, approaching the Card magic user who was gulping a barrel.
"Maaster? You want maine?" Cana asked with a drunken drawl. Makarov silently poured a mug in the time she asked and started to drink.
"Something wrong, Master?" Erza asked from the side, waiting for the old man's response. He nodded negatively and she continued eating her cake.
'What's wrong with that place? Every time I go there, I get this bad feeling that they will do something bad.' Makarov thought, drowning in the booze.
With Naruto
"Ok, you know how we do this," Naruto said to Loke and Kagura who were looking at him as they reached the forests surrounding Magnolia.
"How?" Loke asked, perplexed.
"With Clones of course. Loke, take him with you while I go with Kagura." Naruto said, making a Wood Clone appear beside Loke. Loke's eyes reached his hairline at that.
"You come with me and send him with Kagura!" He said in a whining tone and Naruto nodded and they both changed spots. Kagura stayed silent to the side, observing everything.
"Here, these are your jobs and I want you to complete them as soon as possible. We will have a Harvest festival soon and I don't want to miss it." Naruto said, which made Kagura raise her eyebrows.
"What?" Kagura asked, surprised.
"The Harvest Festival is an event held in Magnolia Town. It is hosted by our Guild and it occurs once a year starting on October 15th. It was done to celebrate the good crop season and is followed for long.
There will be many competitions during the festival and it ends with the most popular event, the Fantasia Parade, a parade featuring the members of our guild, who ride on different floats and use their Magic to entertain the watching public.
It's a show of our power and our promise to protect Magnolia from anything with our magic. I heard it was awesome. I missed it last year as I joined just after the festival was over. After that many things happened and I was promoted to S-class mage. I don't want to miss it this year. So hurry. Don't take long." Naruto explained and Loke nodded.
Loke also heard of it from the many female acquaintances he had in and around Magnolia. The only part he wants to see is the Miss Fairy Tail competition and is secretly waiting for it. He nodded vigorously to Naruto.
"I promise to be there in time. Now let's see." He said counting the number of jobs he was given.
"And don't forget. I'm not going to help you one bit no matter how strenuous and hard the job is. I'm coming along just to see how strong you have become and help in case things go out of hand." Naruto said, which made Loke's counting falter for a second.
"Of course, I can defend myself and if need be, defend Kagura as well," Loke said with a boisterous laugh. He finally completed counting the job he was given.
"Ok, take care. See ya." The other Naruto said and started following Kagura, who already left them.
"Wait! Why the hell do I have 75 jobs to do?" He yelled.
"Only 75? I thought I gave you 100. Sorry. My bad." Naruto said with a sweet smile and added a few more into the pile Loke had. Loke's mind is in complete shock, but he couldn't reply. He walked half dead with other Naruto beside him.
"Wow. I didn't expect you to keep your mouth open for so long, Leo." Naruto said, which shut the celestial spirit's mouth.
"I'll kill you for this." He yelled, his knuckles turning white in his anger.
"Yes. Show that anger on those jobs and complete them. You don't have much time. Remember your promise. How does Kagura feel if she finds out you didn't complete your jobs?" Naruto nudged and that pushed the orangette off the edge.
"YEAH! I'M DOING THIS, BABY!" Loke yelled to the heavens and ran in the direction of his first job, Naruto following him.
With Kagura
"Why did I get only 50 jobs then?" She asked Naruto curiously.
"You counted them? Well, yours were A and B class once while Loke has more C and normal jobs." Naruto explained.
"So you don't want us attending the harvest festival?"
"I never said that. If you want to, you need to finish fast. That's it." Naruto said with a cheeky smile.
"You said you won't help us. Does that mean you won't teleport or transport me when the job is too far?" She realised and asked.
"Exactly. For all you know, I'm just a ghost. I'm going to watch from afar while you do everything. Take this as another method of training. But this time alone."
"How cruel. And I thought you were kind and forgiving."
"I have my moments," Naruto said with a shrug. Kagura nodded. What Naruto said had merit and so their journey began.
One Month Later
"I didn't think you were literally saying you won't help me," Loke said with a wheeze as he walked in the hot sun in a barren area in Fiore, trying to dig for water.
"What did you expect? Help when you ask?" Naruto asked rhetorically, from his perch on a nearby tree.
"At least some water when I'm thirsty." Loke gasped out, unable to maintain his balance.
"Don't play dramatics. You could have simply used your Twister or Chain magic to dig. Who told you to dig yourself, genius?"
"But, but-"
"I saw you trying for that girl. Is that the reason why you want to show your strength? By digging a well with your hands in a barren land?"
"Ok, ok. I admit. That's a foolish idea. Help me." Loke asked.
"No. Do it. You still have 20 more to do and the month has already passed." Naruto said with a disappointed sigh.
"What?! I didn't take that long. I almost did 3 jobs a day!" Loke yelled, horror-struck.
"You are doing this job for a day, genius. You didn't fully complete 3 jobs a day, but you are close. Come on, complete this already." Naruto nudged and Loke used his Ring Magic and dug the hole.
He used it again and again and reached the area where it was wet. With one last Twister, he was able to penetrate through a hard layer and water started coming out.
"Sweet water!" Loke said and gulped a few litres. After feeling refreshed, he stood and with the help of his chain as rope, climbed to the top.
"It doesn't matter if the Harvest Festival has started. I'm going back to the Guild only after completing all these!" He vowed and took the now completed flyer to be stamped.
'He is doing great. He decreased whining and is relying on his power and overall improved in using them and thinking well.' Naruto went through his assessment.
"Naruto looks like that girl is interested in you. Will you put a word for me?" Loke asked with a lecherous smile and Naruto got a tick mark at that.
It's one of the things he started encountering with the orangette. He started to rub off on him and Naruto began to notice how the remarks he made suited the person in question.
He shook his head, coming back on topic and smacking the bespectacled man for distracting him. From the day their journey began, Loke jumped on every opportunity to distract Naruto or just to make him laugh like him, like a pervert.
Though Naruto is trying his best to not fall for the trickery, he doesn't think he can control it for long. Only if he had the chance to test whatever the lion spirit is saying, he can give a strong counter.
With similar yet different thoughts, both of them moved to the next village, in search of their next job.
With Kagura
"Ha, ha. I didn't think A-class jobs were this tough." Kagura said with laboured breaths. She was in front of a bipedal beast which was terrorising the nearby village.
"What did you think? Everything will be a cakewalk?" Naruto asked, surveying the damage she had caused this time.
"I didn't expect you to complete all those jobs that easily," Naruto said approvingly. Kagura has completed her set of 40 jobs a few days ago and currently, they are on the 41st job.
Completing 40 A-class jobs in 30 days is not easy as some of them needed extended stay. First, she went through extermination once and completed them as soon as possible.
Naruto was amazed by her speed, which reached up to 2 A-class jobs a day when it was simple extermination and her planning was perfect.
She picked the close area jobs first and finished them first and moved to another area after that. They came as a big advantage for her as she only had 1 area left which has the majority of her 9 jobs spread.
"Looks good. What improvements did you observe in this month?" Naruto asked cautiously.
As she started gaining practical experience, she started to sync with Archenemy and was able to use it well. That doesn't mean she mastered it already though.
Naruto had a great plan to test her power and if everything goes correctly, he can test her with another one of his interested persons.
And the change in him also started affecting his stay with Kagura. More than often, he would observe some small details a little too closely just for the looks of it and he knew they were not gone unnoticed by the purple-haired girl. She kept quiet about it and Naruto liked it that way.
"Hmm. There are few. But the important ones I would say would be my control and bond with Archenemy. I should test it though. I don't think I can freely use it unless I want to destroy something badly." She explained to Naruto.
"Hmm, so you say these monsters are not enough to test yourself?" Naruto asked and Kagura nodded in affirmation.
"That's new. I never thought you were the cocky type." Naruto said with a teasing smile.
"You never thought many things about me. But I am confident in my abilities, that's it." She said neutrally. This is the next change he observed in her.
After travelling for a month together, she started talking to him frequently unlike before when she would just be quite to the side unless the matter is concerned with or about her.
"I guess this trip is more useful than expected," Naruto said with a smile and Kagura agreed.
"Let's go. I don't think Loke won't take long at the rate he was running." Naruto said with a smile and with a nod, they started to their next destination.
Meanwhile
Fairy Tail Guildhall
"Hey Sirius, where is Naruto? It's been long since I last saw him." Natsu asked the ramen eating jaguar who lazily turned to him.
Sirius started going on jobs with others to improve his relationship with them as he was free and made quite a few connections.
The one he liked the most was Levy. She was cute and liked to explain everything to him, unlike his good-for-nothing blonde father, who demand a more hands-on approach.
After the blue-haired girl, it's Cana for sure. She rarely goes on a job and the one she goes always had high rewards which makes his day all the better.
Though he does have a few thousands of Jewels with him, who doesn't like extra money and he also has few leeways with Cana as she is most of the time drunk.
He also went on a job with Mira's sister and brother who want to go on one but Mira is busy. He liked Elf-man and Lisanna. Elf-man is more or less like him but a little meek.
He didn't see Mira till now and thought she was on a job alone. Squashing all the thoughts, he turned to the Fire Dragon Slayer to answer.
"He went on jobs with Loke and Kagura."
"Huh, 3 of them?" Natsu asked, confused.
"Nah. Loke and Kagura we're the one who does the job while Naruto and his clone accompany them separately," Sirius explained and Natsu nodded.
Unknown to them, a certain female is also listening, just back from her training. She trained hard to improve her control of her power and to get a grasp on all the accumulated power. This made her crush the glass she was drinking from but showed no outward reaction.
"When will they be back?" Gray asked curiously, not noticing anything out of the normal.
"Well, from how many jobs he took, I'll say in a week or two."
"Just in time for S-class selections, I see. It would be a year for him and Erza." Macao said from the side. Cana, who was listening, got a gloomy look at that.
"Who do you think will be selected this time?" Wakaba asked.
"Me for sure. I am going kick that blonde's ass." Natsu proclaimed and pumped his fists high into the air.
"As if gramps would select someone like you," Gray commented offhandedly.
"I still have 2 months to go and you watch!" Natsu said, inching closer to the ice mage.
"Bring it on!"
"There they go again. And when I thought the Harvest Festival and Fantasia were peaceful this year." Makarov said from his stool at the bar table.
"It's not gooing to lasst loong Maaster. Erzza will be back soon." Cana said in her drunken stupor and Makarov nodded. Soon a guild brawl started, uninterrupted until the red hair knight stopped it with her iron foot and knocked everyone for their childish excuses.
