Chapter 38
The Strongest Team
Fairy Tail Guildhall
It's been some days after the Harvest festival and the Fairy Tail guild is in full swing to appease the master to select them for the upcoming S-class trials.
It's the perfect day with a clear sky and gentle breeze when the guild doors were banged open to reveal a familiar blonde mage.
Everyone was surprised by his sudden appearance. He wouldn't take this long for any job especially after he became an S-class mage. But this time, he was out for very long.
"Laxus, what happened?" Makarov asked in worry. He hadn't seen his grandson in months and that worried him as he doesn't go that long on a job.
"Nothing." Laxus shrugged off the old man's concern and started walking toward the second floor of the guild.
Everyone knew something was wrong as Laxus seemed to lean towards one side for support and that means either 2 things. He took a job that was way over his head or he seriously pissed off someone.
All the people present knew which option they needed to choose and kept quiet while the master, who was still concerned for his grandson looked at him in worry.
'There is something wrong. Did someone beat him that badly? He didn't even take any big jobs. Just. A few A-class and an S-class.' Makarov thought deeply.
Generally, he would know where Laxus is all the time as the blonde lightning mage likes to leave his signature wherever he goes. But this time it's too quiet.
He didn't know whether to laugh or cry as this might bring a change in Laxus's attitude or it might push him over the edge even faster.
'I knew he was too arrogant to fight pops.' Sirius thought with an internal smirk. After seeing the match, he was very much satisfied. The lightning blonde got what he deserved.
'I didn't think it would take him 2 months to recover. You did well, Tou-chan!' He cheered and turned to the guild doors as Laxus climbed the stairs.
The guild doors burst open and in came a smiling chain mage with the well-known widely smiling blonde boy.
"Loke, Naruto! Welcome back." Natsu and Gray greeted after which they promptly headbutted.
"Thanks, guys. Didn't I say my reputation went up well?" Loke said with a charming smile trying to keep his cool.
"Yeah, yeah. Now let's report to gramps and rest." Naruto nudged and Loke nodded and walked towards the observing master. Loke gave his report and was about to leave when the doors opened again.
"Ah, Loke. Here you are. I thought I lost you in the forest." Naruto, the original said as he walked with Kagura.
"Oh, I was here for a while. How were your journey and your jobs go? I did mine perfectly and was enjoying the last few days." He said with a shining smile.
"Hmm, I heard it differently. But anyway, I want you here. Looks like she has something to say." Naruto said, turning to Kagura expectantly.
Kagura was still in her strict face and didn't notice what Naruto said which made the blonde nudge her with his elbow and send her into the spotlight. After being pushed, she cleared her throat, trying to remove the embarrassment she is feeling.
"I have decided to join Fairy Tail." She said sternly when all the eyes in the hall turned to her at once which made her nervous. She was practising this for some time now.
The Guild went silent at that. They didn't expect this. Though Naruto had a knack to bring prospective members, they didn't know he could woo those who didn't want to join as well.
"Did I hear it correctly, Gray?" Natsu asked the surprised ice mage. Gray looked around.
"Looks like it, Natsu. Everyone is like us. So she decided to join." Gray replied, forgetting to call Natsu how he used to call.
Though it may not seem like much to an outsider, to Fairy Tail and its Guild members, everyone is a family. They care for each other and protect each other, together.
That's the founding principle of the guild which was still maintained strongly by Makarov, the 3rd Guild Master. Knowing that a strong mage like Kagura not joining and potentially leaving the guild didn't appeal to them.
So her decision to join, which was not possible till now as the deadline she gave Makarov will end soon, came as a surprise. They all welcomed it wholeheartedly though.
"A New MEMBER!" Cheered Natsu.
"Let give her the mark," Makarov said and brought the Guild stamp. Kagura moved forward, showing her right hand.
"Purple with black outline on my right arm shoulder." She asked and Makarov took the stamp.
"Naruto, come here." He asked and as the blonde approached, he gave the stamp to the blonde. Naruto looked at him, confused.
"Stamp her. You changed her mind. So the credit goes to you." Makarov said with a smile and Naruto stamped happily. That day, Kagura Mikazuchi became the official member of Fairy Tail.
A celebration was thrown in her name and everyone enjoyed it except for 2 people. A blonde lightning mage and a white-haired Take Over mage. They both stood afar, looking at 2 different persons in loathing.
Unknown of anything plotting against them, the 2 in question happily enjoyed the party and Kagura even fought Natsu in a friendly spar.
Unknown to many members of Fairy Tail, the number of jobs Naruto is doing and not destroying the area he goes to has got them a lot of money in rewards. Makarov was quite happy to see the guild having some money on its own.
Usually, all the money for Guild maintenance comes from the Magic Council for normal guilds though the Council has yet to use that power as leverage to regulate the guilds, Makarov has no doubt it's a matter of time.
As a Guild gets recognition, the Council's leverage and regulation of the Guild decreases and the Guild works on its own, taking care of the management and maintenance in general.
Fairy Tail has stood on its legs from day 1 and Makarov is very proud of that. He doesn't want to go beg them for money for all the destruction his children cause as it cuts the reward amount already.
Though if they can't link any evidence to the Guild, the Magic Council usually pays the money if it was caused by magical means that's why they want to get rid of all Dark guilds as they usually go around destroying things.
Because of Naruto's intervention, the Guild has amassed sizable funds to maintain and take care of itself for months without jobs and Makarov is proud of that as they couldn't gather this much in guilds history.
That's why he wouldn't object to any job Naruto wants to go on as it only brings more money unlike some of his children who don't have any sense of the destruction they cause.
It's not like he doesn't like that. He can do better without the unnecessary destruction and the subsequent costs as most of their rewards go into repairing the damage. With that thought in mind, Makarov wistfully looked at his children as they welcomed their new member. He is pleased that they managed to save another soul from falling into the darkness.
Next Day
Kagura's welcome party went well and like all parties, it ended up in a guild brawl this time, Makarov was happy to pay the damages and happily enjoyed it with his children.
Kagura felt like a big burden was relieved after being stamped with the mark. Though she didn't know why. It felt like the mark has given her some relief and she liked the feeling.
The purple and black outlined mark suited her well and was also complemented by many about her choice of colours. She was also given residence in the Fairy Hills girls' quarters.
As she didn't know about it, Levi, explained about the quarters and what they are like. From what she understood,
Fairy Hills is Fairy Tail's female dormitory, where most of the female guild members live including Erza and Levi. She was given a tour of the place as well.
Fairy Hills is a large and mildly imposing building composed of bricks. It consists of a central, elongated section at whose sides sit two wings protruding outwards, with the one to the centre's right acting as the main entrance, which takes the form of a double door with a pyramid-shaped upper part topped by a similarly pyramid-shaped roof, held up by wooden beams.
Enforcing the multitude of standard bricks on the edges and marking rectangular sections in the central part are larger, lighter bricks lined up in vertical rows, with light beams instead marking sections horizontally.
Sitting in front of the entrance, held up by two pillars composed of stone and bricks, flanking the pathway leading to the building, and each topped by the sculpture of a stylized Fairy Tail symbol, is a large, mildly arched sign reading "Fairy Hills" in sober, elongated dark characters.
Though Kagura liked the idea, she felt comfortable around her current residence in Naruto's and declined the offer respectfully and decided to find somewhere near to live.
She reached Fairy Tail, no longer awkward or guilty to go there as a feeling of familiarity and love came over her after being accepted. She didn't see Naruto anywhere and went to the only known person in the guild.
"Loke, where is Naruto?" She asked the lion spirit who was talking with Cana, a new girl she came to know animatedly. Upon being addressed, Loke turned to see Kagura and almost jumped on her.
"What can I do for you, beautiful?" His playboy side overcame him and he asked in a sing-song voice.
"Where is Naruto?" she asked again, not minding his antics.
"Naruto? I heard he went to the Magic Council. He had something with them." Loke shrugged and Kagura prodded which made Loke explain Naruto's relation with the Magic Council and his position as one of the Council's Hunters which was well known by now, leaked by the Magic Council.
"Hey Cana," Gray greeted as he walked in, shirtless.
Cana nodded negatively which made the ice mage look at himself and noticed the lack of clothes.
"Come on, not again!" Gray exclaimed, and started searching for his lost clothes.
"What do you mean by she is in his team? No. She is with us!" Natsu walked in the same way, heatedly arguing with Happy, who was floating beside him.
"Not aye, sir. Natsu!" Happy said in discomfort. He can't convince Natsu.
"What is stressing your fire brain cells about?" Gray asked, noticing the 2 bicker.
"I'm saying Kagura is my team. Happy doesn't understand that." Natsu said, not starting a fight with the Ice mage for once.
"Hmm, let's ask her. It's not like she will bite you." Gray said and walked towards Kagura.
"Hey, Kagura-"
"Which team are you gonna join?" Natsu asked enthusiastically, thoughts of challenging the purple-haired girl in mind.
"Team? I should join a team to be a mage?" Kagura asked, confused. Naruto didn't explain to her about this.
"Not necessarily. But usually, Team mages get high-paying jobs like how you did with Naruto in the last one. So that's why he asked that." Gray explained, in the middle of throwing an icy fork.
"Am I not considered a team member now?" Kagura asked curiously and everyone turned to her in surprise.
"So you mean you are on Naruto's team?" Macao asked, his eyes popping out and Wakaba's cigar hit the ground at that.
"Who is in his team again?"
"Naruto, Sirius, Loke and now Kagura." Macao counted and everyone's eyes widened as they turned to the only other strong team in the guild. The Thunder something. They didn't bother to remember the name.
"Master, the new strongest team is formed!" Cana said in surprise, her tone clear. They can't imagine the power such a team held.
"What?" Makarov asked, perplexed.
"Till now the strongest team we have is Laxus's and now that these 4 came together to form a team, don't you think they will be the new Strongest team?" Gray elaborated and which made Makarov thoughtful.
"Hmm, yes. Guess we have the new strongest team!" His face showed the joy he had as he raised his booze in celebration.
"For the Strongest team!" He cheered.
"For the Strongest Team!" Everyone chorused in cheers. Which the white-haired girl couldn't take any more.
"So you are the new member, eh?" A smooth voice asked and they all turned to see Mira standing there with a stoic face.
"Yes. My name is Kagura Mikazuchi." Kagura introduced and Mira nodded in acknowledgement.
"I want to see your magic. Care for a spar?" She asked in the most casual tone she could manage.
"Uh, I'm not sure if it's the norm, but why not?" Kagura agreed and with a nod, both of them moved to the back of the Guildhall, to spar. Unknown to Loke was very excited to watch the match.
"A spar between Mira and the new girl?" Natsu said in excitement.
"Shouldn't we take Masters approval?" Cana asked.
"Why bother? Let him do his work. It's just a spar. Nothing serious." Mira said and when they looked unconvinced, she went to the sober man, who was fully drunk and said something.
He nodded and Mira gave them a victory smile and walked towards them with a skip in her step.
"This calls for bets!" Cana said happily as she started circulating the news around the guild and collecting bets.
All of them moved to the of the hall, where spars generally take place and Loke started explaining the rules as he volunteered to become the proctor of the match and walked up to the middle of them to explain the rules.
"Ladies, the rules are simple. No high-scale damage and if your opponent yields, you win. Do you agree?" He asked in a straight tone, even though he want some much-needed action.
Kagura and Mira nodded. With a chop of his hand, the spar began, everyone, mostly grown men cheering the fight.
"Take Over: Satan Soul," Mira said, changing into her Satan Soul form, getting many cheers from a particularly excited orangette.
"Take Over magic, huh. I didn't fight anyone with that magic. Let's see," Kagura said, drawing her sheathed Archenemy into an attack position.
"Let's see your swords destruction is more powerful than my Satan Soul's," Mira said her demeanour changed from calm to a bloodthirsty one as she charged toward Kagura.
"Gravity Blade," Kagura said, making a gravity-imbued downward slash with her sword towards the incoming Mira. Mira felt an unusual downward force against her, which for a second froze her in place.
This attack is a downgraded version of the original attack which was suggested by Naruto to conserve her magic and focus on the target alone.
Mira struggled for a second and used her Darkness magic Evil shower, continually bathing her body in darkness to escape the effects and continued her charge. Though the bullets fell because of the Gravity, she broke free of the hold.
Testing a hunch, Kagura tried it again and expected Mira to dodge but the Take Over mage took to the skies and escaped the effects completely.
"Heh. It won't work on me twice." Mira said smugly and sent Evil orbs toward Kagura.
"Evil Orb Barrage," she said, sending hundreds of Evil orbs towards Kagura.
Kagura tried slicing them, but after some time, seeing their number not decreasing because of the white-haired woman's relentless barrage, swung her sword in the air.
"Half Moon Slash," she said, sending a wide slash after slash toward Mira and making her dodge her attacks, this affecting the concentration of the darkness magic user and letting Kagura escape.
"You are good. Let's see what you will do when I take it close and personal," Mira said under her breath and charged toward Kagura, her hands crackling with electricity.
As Kagura used one of her Gravity attacks, Mira released the lightning built up in her hand.
"Lightning Magic: Bolt," she said and the bolt moved towards Kagura at lightning speed, which made Kagura unable to dodge the attack. But since her sword is made out of metal, it took the brunt of it. But this gave enough distraction for Mira to enter Kagura's guard and begin her onslaught.
"Explosion Punch," Mira said, gathering magic in her hand, unleashing an explosion when in close contact to Kagura.
Mira followed it with dozen more and though Kagura tried to hold them with the sheathed blade, the power they held was extraordinary and due to the fight being close quarters, it gave her a disadvantage.
"Not much of a hand-to-hand fighter eh," Mira said smugly, her hand charging with more magic.
"Satan Blast," Mira said, extending her arms and creating a swirling, disintegrating, spherical blast and sending it towards Kagura.
Being very close, Kagura can feel the destructive energy the attack held and unsheathed her sword.
"Slash," Kagura said, releasing a long silver arc of magic, releasing enough magic to make all the audience step back.
Both the attacks fought for dominance but Mira's superior strength and experience tore through Kagura's slash but it didn't have enough power to move on and dispersed soon.
"That's good. How old are you again? 13?" Mira asked in appreciation.
"14," Kagura replied stoically.
"You are strong for a 14-year-old. Let's see how strong you are." Mira said with a smirk and charged again.
With Loke
'They are going hard!' Loke cheered like a fangirl in his head. Though he wanted to cheer for Kagura, Mira's enticing magic is disturbing his focus.
Beside him, Macao and Wakaba also had similar thoughts but all of them managed to maintain a curious and neutral looks on the outside to not get kicked out.
"Yeah! Like that! That's a good one!" Natsu cheered on the sidelines, but far from the neutral-faced older men.
"Are you trying to kill me with your cheers? Shut it." Gray said, picking his ear as all the shouting of the fire dragon slayer is too loud.
"As if a brute like you know of anything about fighting," Natsu said, not stopping his cheering.
"What? I should say that. Shut it or I'll plaster it with ice." Gray said, his hands starting to release mist.
"Try th-" their conversation was interrupted by a string pressure in the area and all of them turned to still going spar.
Few Minutes Prior
"Darkness Stream," Mira said, extending her hand towards Kagura, who jumped back when Mira's attack almost hit her. Mira summoned her Magic Seal underneath her Kagura, where a multitude of large tendrils composed of dark energy started forming, which surrounded and enveloped the gravity mage.
"Gravity Magic: Earth," Kagura called, heightening the gravity around her. This strongly forced everything around her downward.
This attack is different from her other attacks. As her other attacks can only affect the opponent or objects. While this attack affects even magic itself to bend to her gravity and this is the only attack she created.
It is the only attack she is very comfortable using and knows will work in many circumstances, protecting her from anything. And the most useful part is, that it doesn't affect her in any way. She used it on Marsh. That's how they all hid and chose the cowards' way to get Archenemy.
Mira was surprised to see her darkness stream disperse under the pressure and her smug smirk vanished.
"Soul Extinctor,"
"Evil Explosion,"
"Suppression Arts," Mira tried everything. She did her best to make the purple-haired girl kneel in front of her in exhaustion but to no avail.
Kagura is still standing in front of Mira, her sword on the ground, about to fall in exhaustion, but pushing on as a show of strength.
Kagura knew she can't push much more but wanted to prove she is not weak and all the time Naruto spent with her training isn't wasted and so she took Archenemy and stood again.
"Damn it. All you have to do is kneel. It will be over. Why are you stubborn!" Mira shouted in rage.
"I-I will not give up. Not Yet. He, h-he trained me to be better than this." Kagura wheezed out in gasped breadth. Mira's eyes widened at that.
She didn't like that sentence. She didn't like how close Naruto had been to her. She didn't like how she got so much of his time while he must be training her for the upcoming S-class trials. She didn't like this purple-haired girl at all.
"Well then. If you don't give up, I don't have any other option than to take this up a notch." Mira said and started to transform again.
"Satan Soul: Halphas," Mira said, her body engulfed in bright light, Mira's magic circles engulfing her and a few seconds later, revealing a new form. A new form that Fairy Tail members never saw.
Even Lisanna and Elfman were surprised by this as Mira didn't even tell them about this. They knew she had a stronger form, but not this strong. She avoided that topic when they brought it up and would say it's not needed now to dodge.
"Try to keep up," Mira said, her voice becoming more based. She started using the previous attacks. But the contrast was very easy to see.
While her normal attacks using Darkness magic and its variety are destructive while Mira is in this form, they are simply catastrophic.
Even a small blast has the power and destructive capabilities to destroy a small part of town and that didn't mean Kagura gave up. Far from it.
Kagura stood in her position, taking all the attacks head-on. She used her sword's destructive properties to their best and resonated with an equal level of potency to counter the attacks.
Her training with Naruto was very similar after all. Naruto's magic can be used either way and the blonde likes to make his attacks as eye-catching as possible, thus destructive. She can deal with this level of power as she was trained with it.
After some attacks, seeing the gravity mage is still standing, Mira had enough. She is not going to push this and wants to appear heartless and so she decided to end the spar with one last attack.
"Well, Kagura, I must agree you are strong, both in mind and body. I can't disrespect you with silly attacks anymore. If you withstand this, I'll give up." Mira said with a sincere smile and started charging her spell.
"Halphas Blast," Mira said, using her darkness energy and firing it towards Kagura.
Kagura knew the magic in the spell is something she can't defend herself from in her state. But she tried her best to use one of the slashes to escape.
"Slashing Form: Final Slash," said Kagura, releasing a large silver slash that tore through anything that came into contact with it.
Everyone around them watched in wonder, some with fear as they can't stop the attacks if they pass the sparring ring and come toward them.
When the 2 attacks were about to meet, a large flash covered the area, everyone thinking that the attacks met and braced themselves. But just as the flash came, it disappeared, leaving no trace of 2 attacks.
"Idiots, why the hell are you 2 using such destructive attacks here? Are you nuts?" Came the disappointed voice of a serious blonde who is looking at Mira and an unconscious Kagura in Mira's hand in disappointment.
"The spar ended. Now scram!" Naruto said with authority and no one dared to disobey and left to the Guildhall in a hurry.
"You are dismissed from doing any jobs for a month. And I'm not going to train you for the stunt you have pulled. Enjoy in peace." Naruto said, not turning towards them and moving into the guild hall.
