"Are we sure we want to be doing this right now?" asked Cleo. "I mean why couldn't we wait until tomorrow when we could actually see where we're going?"
Ash glanced over to Cleo who was struggling to get over a rock in the way of the overgrown path he and Emma had taken earlier in the day. It was night now. It had taken Lewis some time to gather up all the supplies needed for a nighttime exploration of a magical island temple.
"You know Lewis wouldn't have been able to sleep," Emma responded. "Besides, with our luck, ignoring it will only cause us more trouble later."
"I didn't say ignore it! Just wait a few hours, what harm could that have done?"
"Yeah, 'cause we've never regretted saying those words before," Rikki quipped from behind her. She was bringing up the rear with Zane.
"I'm interested in how this thing was able to 'hide itself' as you say." Lewis pushed himself up a mossy stretch. "I doubt it was truly invisible, but if it uses some sort of light refraction, it could be like cloaking."
"Yeah, well I'm interested in why," Ash spoke up from the front. "Why did we find this now? Why was I the only one who sensed this thing? I mean I get my life is going to be weird now, but a magic invisible building?" He sighed and looked up when he felt Emma put a hand on his shoulder.
She offered him a bit of a sad smile, "We're going to figure this out. It's going to be okay."
He gave her hand a quick squeeze. "Thank you," speaking quietly for just her to hear.
She turned back to the path, "Hey, I think we're almost there."
Lewis jogged up to meet Emma, his pack of gear clanking around as he tried to get a better view of where she was pointing. Ash found himself a little behind them helping Cleo avoid a large palm leaf Lewis had absently let go of.
She looked up at him like she was apologizing for her boyfriend's behavior. "He's really excited."
They kept trekking in relative silence for a minute or so before Cleo said something, "You know, she's right."
He looked at her for a moment before she continued, "It's going to be okay. Maybe it's just another power, but you know, more subtle."
Her reassurance made him think of his first experience with his powers.
The girls had urged the guys into the water that morning, and with little surprise all three collapsed in the swells, a mess of arms and tails. He had looked down at his new appendage: A large shimmering tail with colors reflecting the deep blue hues of the ocean. And he loved it. He was terrified, absolutely. But he looked over to the two mermen next to him and saw expressions he thought probably mirrored his own: a bit of shock mixed with abundant glee.
The girls raced into the water too and the six spent the next few minutes having more fun than elementary aged children. They eventually split into pairs, and Emma showed him the easiest way to swim. Together they toured the incredible reefs around the island. He thought she looked so peaceful and happy there in her world before the realization hit that the ocean was now his world too. He then quickly reached for her hand, pulling her close before giving her a passionate and their first of many, underwater kiss.
But the guys powers, like the girls, did not end with their transformation. They all managed to pull themselves back to the beach and dry off, driven by curiosity over new powers. Lewis had grabbed a bucket from camp, which Cleo had used her power to fill with ocean water. The hope was to make it easier for them to focus.
"Who wants to go first?" asked Lewis.
"I'll go," Ash offered stepping up to the filled bucket. He thought about Emma, and how she could freeze something by forcing every molecule of the water to come to a halt. He took a breath and then copied her signature hand gesture only for nothing to happen. He tried again. Nothing.
He sighed, "It's not working."
Emma spoke, "Maybe try…"
"Here let me." Zane interrupted as he stepped forward. He took a breath and held out a slightly cupped hand, closed his eyes and moved his arm like he was scooping the water. And it worked! Zane opened his eyes to see that he was using his mind to hold a small water ball.
"Zane you have my power!" Cleo jumped up a little excited.
Ash watched Zane let down his hand and the water fall back into the bucket with a splash.
"If Zane can move water, I wonder if our powers are divided similarly like the girls," Lewis questioned aloud though more to himself. "I wonder." He thrust his hand toward the water in a two fingered point and gave it a slight flick. Suddenly the water in the bucket was frozen solid.
"That's cool man!"
"Literally!" quipped Lewis.
Ash turned when he felt Rikki's eyes on him.
"That means you probably have my power," she said, uncharacteristically gently. "Water gets hot because it gets agitated. That energy comes from you. I do it by putting my annoyance, frustration, whatever, into the water. But you Mr. Sunshine," she took a moment to smile, "don't really have a lot of that. Stop trying to do this how everyone else does it. Find your own way."
He nodded and closed his eyes and let his hand fall into a comfortable position. He imagined he was riding Rebel, holding onto his reins. He then snapped his wrist as though signaling the horse to move it. He opened his eyes to see the formerly frozen bucket of water now steaming.
"See you did it." Rikki nodded in encouragement.
"Hey! Look we made it!" His girlfriend's voice shook him out of his thoughts.
"I don't see anything," Zane called from behind him.
"It's invisible remember. But, get right up to it, you can feel it with your hands and kind of see it shimmering."
"How big is this thing?" asked Rikki from the strange line of them all now pressing up against the invisible wall.
Emma responded, "When we were here earlier it just kept going. We can tell it is a building though. We found an opening somewhere, but it was pitch black when we looked inside."
"That's why we needed the flashlights."
"Okay, but you said it was a temple earlier." Cleo pointed out as she tried to navigate around some vines that had caught her foot.
"We think so. Because of…" He paused trying to find the spot where he knew he'd find them, "Because of these." He gripped the unseen but marble-like stone beneath his hand as the group made their way toward him to feel the discovery.
