**Trigger warning: There is a mention of rape and it is discussed later on in the chapter. It does NOT involve Kurt or Blaine.**
August 2020 (Month 7 – Week 1)
"I. Don't. Care. I don't care, Kurt! You can make them have little purple dinosaurs on it and I still won't care."
"Thad? You invited Thad to the wedding?"
"He was a Warbler! What did you want me to do? 'Everyone can come but you, Thad. Sorry'?"
"He's in love with you."
"URGH!"
Kurt scowled. "29 days, Blaine. This wedding is happening in 29 days and you won't help with the stupid napkins."
"I don't care. Do you know what I care about? The fact that the nursery isn't painted, the cribs aren't put together, the fact that there are not one, not two, but three high profile cases going on at the office." Blaine said. "Also the fact that my father is still looming around somewhere because I know Bob's scary, but he isn't that scary. So excuse me if I'm not freaking out about white or ivory napkins when they are pretty much the same thing!"
"You know as well as I do that they aren't the same thing!" Kurt exclaimed.
"I'm a little more concerned with the office being so busy that we may have to cut our honeymoon short."
"Good thing we're just going to amusement parks!"
"By the way, I know we're planning a better, Kurt approved trip next summer but I find it very rude that you keep acting like I'm childish."
"WE'RE HONEYMOONING IN LATE SUMMER AT DISNEY WORLD AND UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, BLAINE!"
"I bet you didn't even get the coffee."
"We never drink coffee here anymore. Oh my God."
Were they even really arguing about the same thing? Were they even really listening to each other? Why did their spats end up so jumbled together? None of it even made sense, really. And Kurt, for one, knew he was just spitting stuff out from the top of his head but where was it coming from?
And why wouldn't Blaine take ten minutes out of his day to do wedding planning?
So what if Kurt had changed his mind six times so far. It was their wedding, after all, and it had to be perfect.
"Blaine, I want to talk about the stupid napkins and the table cloths and the freaking chairs! Can you please help me out here?"
"Let's just bring metal fold out picnic chairs! God!"
"Why would you invite Thad?!"
"Why would you invite Brittany and Santana? Have you talked to them in five years?"
"They were in glee club!"
"SO WAS THAD!"
"They're in love with each other, not me!"
Blaine leaned until his head was on their kitchen island and let out a strangled groan.
Not the pleasurable kind from sex either.
Although at the moment, sex could probably make him feel better.
And sex with Kurt made everything better.
Especially frustrated sex.
"Oh God." Kurt shook his head. "What are we doing? How can we get married and raise two humans if we can't decide on a napkin color?"
"WHITE. DO THE WHITE. I SAY IVORY, YOU SAY WHITE. I SAY WHITE, YOU SAY IVORY. SO TELL HER YOU WANT WHITE OR I'M TELLING HER YOU WANT PICNINC TABLECLOTH CHECKERED BLUE AND WHITE!"
"That won't go with the tablecloths!"
Blaine looked at him, blinking rapidly, before bursting into loud laughter.
"It's not funny, Blaine!" Kurt snapped.
"Won't go with the tablecloths." Blaine gasped from the floor which he was now sitting on, up against the island he'd thrown himself over moments earlier. "That won't go with the tablecloths."
"Blaine!" Kurt raised his voice but was not quite yelling. "Stand up!"
"No. I can't."
"Why not?" Kurt asked irritably.
"Because I think I hurt my wrist."
Kurt walked around the island and looked down at him.
"Won't go with the tablecloths. What color are the tablecloths?"
"BLAINE!"
"I'm sorry! You give me too many options and sometimes I just answer so you'll let me pee or eat or sleep. Okay?" Blaine rubbed his face.
"Did you really hurt your wrist?" Kurt sighed.
"If I say yes, will you get the ivory napkins?"
Kurt's eyes narrowed as Blaine pushed himself into a seating position and then stood.
"You don't want the ivory so go with the white."
"Fine." Kurt snapped and then scoffed. "Picnic table checkers."
"You're acting crazy." Blaine gave him a look.
"And you aren't? You basically called Bob, then David and then Wes freaking out about putting the cribs together when the twins won't even be here until the end of October. Why did we get two again? Jake said we only needed one."
"I don't know. I got mouse click happy, I guess." Blaine shrugged. "Might I add, none of the three of them helped me."
"Because there's nearly three whole months until they'll be born."
Blaine sighed.
"Thad. Really?" Kurt gave Blaine a look.
"What?"
"Did David invite him to their wedding next year?"
"No."
"What about Wes? Are they ever going to actually get married?"
"No and yes… in that order."
"So why did you?"
"Because I'm too nice. Brady's boyfriend is coming too." Blaine looked thoughtful. "They're really cute."
"Brady's boyfriend can come. Anyone in Bob's family can come. It's Thad I don't want to come."
"Fine. Call him and tell him he can't come." Blaine stood, shrugging a shoulder.
"Oh no." Kurt shook his head. "Nice try."
"I'm not doing that and if you don't want to, then… he's coming?" Blaine said, shrugging his shoulder. "Plus… you said you checked everything against the list. How did you not realize his name was there?"
"I don't know!" Kurt said irritably as his cell phone began to ring. He sighed and rejected the call.
"Who was that?"
"Dad… so probably Melody wanting to talk about that boy again. Oh God." Kurt groaned, tilting his head back and looking at the ceiling. "You are never bringing a homeless boy into the house again because all day she wants to talk about him and I just can't take it. I cannot handle a preteen girl crush right now, Blaine."
"But it's so cute… and I think he had a crush on her too." Blaine looked thoughtful. "Maybe I'm the matchmaker."
Kurt glared at him.
"After all, your success with Mercedes and David pretty much tanked." Blaine shrugged one shoulder.
As usual when Melody called and Kurt rejected the call, Blaine's phone began to ring.
"Don't. You. Dare." Kurt glared at him.
"Hey, pumpkin!" Blaine said enthusiastically. "How are you?"
Kurt grabbed a kitchen towel and threw it at Blaine's head—only barely missing.
They did not have time for this.
But did Blaine care?
Nooo. Of course not.
Good throw, Blaine mouthed. But not good enough.
"Just for that, I'm picking ivory."
Blaine gave him a thumbs up.
"Fine. Then white."
Blaine gave him a look and then another thumbs up.
"God, you're literally killing me." Kurt groaned, sitting at the island and glaring in his general direction.
"The word 'literally' in this scenario would mean I am in the act of killing you and I'm not." Blaine said impatiently. He then said into the phone, "I'm glad you appreciate my humor, Mel."
Kurt rolled his eyes.
"Mellie, I would let you talk to your brother but he's being a bit of a—well, I wasn't going to use that word but, yeah."
Kurt's eyes widened.
"We'll call you back."
"What did she call me?"
"I don't know." Blaine said, sitting and moving Kurt's laptop in front of him.
"What are you doing?"
Blaine held up a finger since Melody still hadn't let him off of the phone, saying something in response to what clearly had to be about the boy that had stayed with Kurt and Blaine for three weeks while a custody situation went through the court—although it was pushed through pretty quick given the situation and the fact that Blaine worked with lawyers with all the connections.
Because, really, a kid with an abusive father? Was Blaine going to let him just sit in some shelter for three weeks when "God-Knows-What" would happen? No chances with what Blaine had gone through with his own shitty dad.
Blaine had pulled his sweet, puppy face and had convinced Brian's judge (who happened to also love Blaine—did anyone in law not?) to let him take in the boy.
And sure, the boy been cute and actually super sweet once he got past thinking they were 'faggots' because his parents had sucked in the worst kind of ways… he'd actually bonded a lot with both of Kurt and Blaine by the end of it.
And, yes… Kurt had been super upset about Blaine bringing him home at first (mostly because Kurt got the brunt of the attitude in the beginning) but then he bonded with the boy who was three years older than Melody… and maybe he couldn't quit thinking about him now. Wondering if the adoptive parents were treating him well. And Kurt may or may not have checked his phone multiple times throughout the day (even at work) to make sure there weren't missed calls from Ryan.
Just maybe.
"Blaine Wyatt Anderson." Kurt snapped after bringing his attention back to the task at hand.
"Don't worry. I'm off of the phone with your darling sister and my BFF. I've already submitted it all to the wedding planner."
"WHAT?!"
"Ivory napkins, the chairs that were more comfortable, and the China you liked. Already submitted so can we go have angry sex or something?" Blaine's voice was cheerful… which may or may not have annoyed Kurt in that moment.
"Please tell me it wasn't the one chairs—Blaine, you didn't."
"Great. I didn't. So you don't want those, so I'm clicking the others. And now it's done." Blaine smiled sweetly. "By the way… this is why Wes and AJ haven't gotten married yet. They had a meltdown last June and neither of them have had the energy to discuss it again yet."
"I can understand that. Too bad we're one month out. By the way, we need the final headcount so you need to message all of your Warbler buddies since half of them haven't RSVP's."
"Yeah I'll try to fit that in between taking my pre-bedtime pee and putting my pajamas on." Blaine sighed. "They're your Warbler buddies too."
"They freaking loved you so much you got every single solo, Blaine. You're closer to them so you call or text them."
"But there are three I don't remember and I'm afraid they'll bring something up and figure out I don't remember who they were." Blaine winced. "I'm horrible."
"It was so hard having all of those boys love you, wasn't it?"
"Says the goober who saw me for the first time and looked like I was a life size walking cheesecake."
"We don't have time for this. We also need to go to the venue and decide how we want the flowers to be."
"That's what the florist is for! Let her figure it out!" Blaine laid his head on the island, fake crying. "Is it too late to elope?"
"If you want to be out $50,000 no."
"$50,000?!" Blaine rose his head up, his hazel eyes wide.
"You said no budget… remember? Blow off money on the wedding and the rest of your inheritance goes into accounts for the twins and baby number three whenever she makes an appearance. You also said you didn't want to hear about the pricing." Kurt said. "And that's… not including the venue itself."
"I am not going to have a panic attack. I am not going to have a panic attack." Blaine said to himself.
"No worries. We're going to Harry Potter World and Disney World for the honeymoon, Blaine. Saving tons there." Kurt said. "Did you know Marcy and David are taking two weeks to travel in Europe?"
"I'm aware because we get to watch Ollie." Blaine said.
"Wait, what?"
"I told you." Blaine yawned. "Worst case scenario, we throw him in with Bob. There are so many kids, he'll never know. Adrian and I discussed this in length today."
Kurt stared at Blaine, not even blinking.
"What?"
"What if we get married and end up hating each other? We can't even pick napkins."
"Uhm, we did. I already submitted it."
"You know what I mean, Blaine."
"We're stressed out. You've got two designers who literally won't stop offering you jobs. We have no idea where my dad is because the police lost tabs on him. We are getting married in twenty nine days. The twins will be born at the end of October or the beginning of November. Not to mention I have a huge trial in December that Tammy Jo has told Bob I'm not qualified for yet five times. In front of me. And what are we going to do about the fashion shows once the twins are here?!"
Kurt covered his face, whimpering.
"Plus… who is going to stay with us when they're born? Everyone's offered but who is going to do it? What if they change their mind, nobody helps us, and they die because we are incompetent humans?" Blaine took a deep breath.
"They aren't going to die." Kurt laughed.
"I can't uninvite Thad." Blaine said.
"I know. I just wish you hadn't invited him in the first place." Kurt sighed. "The way he looks at you makes me uncomfortable. You aren't a piece of meat."
"Honestly there will be enough people that we probably won't even see him." Blaine said. "I can't believe we just fought over the wedding again."
"We didn't fight over the wedding. We fought over you saying I slammed down a piece of paper. How do you slam papers, Kurt?"
"Uh… the way you did it. Want me to demonstrate?"
Blaine narrowed his eyes. "Yes. Please show me how you slam paper, Kurt."
"Fine." Kurt went into the living room and came back with a bill. He then quickly placed it on the table.
"Uhm…?" Blaine stared at him.
"That's slamming paper!"
"Doesn't slamming generally… make a 'slam' sound? Like slamming a door? Or… you know… any sound at all?"
"I don't like the name Michael, okay? Please can we just take it off the list?!"
"What do you mean? You're the one who suggested it, Kurt!"
"I know but I changed my mind! I also don't like Joshua either."
"That was going to be the other one's names!"
"I know!" Tears filled Kurt's eyes. "I can't handle this! It's too many things at once!"
"Hey, hey, hey." Blaine jumped up and rushed over to him. "No. Calm down. We're okay."
Kurt nodded, his hand over his mouth.
"It's okay. We… We're stressed and we're venting but it's okay. We're okay." Blaine said, touching his face. "We'll find different names and I'm sorry I… slammed a sheet of paper… although I don't understand how one slams paper."
"We fought about ice cream yesterday, Blaine."
"Sedutto's ice cream is so much better, Kurt."
"No. Grom's is." Kurt's lip trembled. "And I'm so sick of pizza!"
"Shh." Blaine looked him in the eyes, his hand rubbing up and down Kurt's arm. "We're okay."
Kurt nodded and wiped his eyes, taking a deep breath.
"I think we both need to put off wedding planning—"
Kurt opened his mouth to protest.
"Until the weekend." Blaine continued. "And on Saturday morning we'll get everything figured out and turned in for good. We'll never have to do it again."
Kurt sniffled. "That's not enough time. I don't know what to do."
"Look… you know as well as I do that everything is taken care of. Now we'rejust nitpicking it so it'll be 'perfect' but the thing that will make it perfect is us actually showing up."
Kurt let out a laugh and wiped his eyes again, nodding.
"You know it's true. It's fine. We'll keep going back and forth between napkins, table cloths, chairs, and China until this weekend when it's due… and then we'll have a little less than a month until we attend the best party ever, hopefully get giddy drunk, get Taco Bell on the way home and I have another surprise idea for you on the way home, too, actually… and then we get to be married!"
"I know. I do." Kurt let out another deep breath.
"What else?" Blaine tilted his head, squeezing Kurt's hand.
"I don't know. I'm still anxious being here alone." Kurt wiped his eyes again. "We don't know where your dad is but he hurt Danny last night. He hurt a kid."
Blaine felt himself getting angry all over again—like he did every time he thought about it since finding out the night before.
"How do does a grown man break a kid's leg? What kind of person throws a kid across a room? And why was your dad trying to grab a two year old from her mother?!" Kurt continued when Blaine didn't say anything.
"I know it doesn't make it better, but I did talk to Alex today. Danny is super proud of himself and is loving all of the attention from Mia's parents." Blaine said. "I also sent him an Amazon gift card for eBooks. I don't know how people can read on those screens like that. It gives me a headache… but he shared his library with me and I am pretty sure he's already ready more than I have at this age."
"I'm really glad he's doing good and that he's well ready. But…" Kurt took a deep, shaky breath. "I just… Blaine, your dad is nuts. Your father literally broke Danny's leg last night and the police couldn't find him. He's crazy. What is he going to do to you if he finds you alone? I literally can't sleep more than two hours at a time because I'm so worried about you. I don't care what he could do to me. I just need you to be okay because he's done so much to you already and I just can't handle this anymore. He needs to leave you alone!"
"Is this why you're really so anxious?" Blaine asked gently, frowning.
"A bit part of it." Kurt admitted. "He keeps getting so close and who knows if he went back to Ohio. The last time we saw him, he went to Alex's first and then our place. Remember? He's scaring me, Blaine. Before I was pissed and annoyed but the more time that passes, I get more and more scared."
Blaine frowned.
Was he nervous?
Of course.
But Kurt was obviously a lot more effected now than he was before… and Blaine was not okay with that.
Not at all
They were getting married soon.
This was supposed to be the happiest time of their lives. Married, babies on the way.
And of course, Blaine's Dad.
That was the simplest, all-encompassing was to say it. Just Blaine's Dad.
"Let's call Matt or see if they'll come here. You know they keep offering and we've only done it a few times. It'll make you feel better… plus, school hasn't started back for him yet." Blaine frowned and watched Kurt closely, his hand running up and down Kurt's arm to soothe him. "If it makes you feel better, he's a good shoot. He's only shot twice and killed them with one bullet."
"Why would that make me feel better?" Kurt looked at him, horrified.
Blaine, who had looked down at his phone as he was talking, looked up. "They're on the way."
Color returned to Kurt's face and he nodded, glancing in the corner of the room where several huge boxes were leaned against the wall with baby furniture waiting to be put together.
"I think you need to turn your work phone off for a few days. Let them leave voicemails. Marc has your personal number and he usually calls that one anyway." Blaine said gently.
"We're getting married in less than four weeks and I get nervous if I don't hear from you ever two hours, Blaine."
"I'm fine. At this point I'm numb to it."
"Yes. That's what is freaking me out even more!"
"Kurt, my love, you have a retired officer who was in SWAT training courses on the way. There are two police cars outside of our house and three officers patrolling this neighborhood. We have cameras and a new security system. Not to mention we've got Bob down the street who is paranoid and goes out once an hour to make sure nobody is creeping around. He says he's just taking Miles on little walks but I know him."
"I would almost feel better if Bob stayed here than Matt." Kurt laughed a bit.
"Why?" Blaine looked at Kurt like he was crazy. Because Matt was literally in SWAT training courses.
"Because he is your Mama Bear and he is ready to fight. You know he is. It would actually make my week to see Bob beat the crap out of your dad."
Blaine looked down as he got a text from Adrian.
Here.
"Matt and Adrian are here. Do you feel better?" Blaine asked, hearing the door unlock—because they'd given Matt a key seeing as sometimes he even came when they weren't home just so Blaine's dad would know someone was there often even in the middle of a work day… also, even if it wasn't Kurt and Blaine.
"Hey, Kurt!" Matt came up behind him and wrapped an arm around his shoulder, smiling brightly.
"Thanks." Kurt said, letting out a little sigh of relief.
"Hey, we brought some food too." Adrian came in after Matt. "Pizza anyone? Don't worry, Kurt. I brought pasta too."
"I love you, Adrian." Kurt sighed.
Finally, someone else who wasn't obsessed with the craze that was New York City pizza.
(He wouldn't admit he, Alec, and Eric had gotten plenty of pizza their first two years, though, of course.)
"Oh my God. Can I put that furniture together?" Matt gasped.
"I will pay you." Blaine's eyes widened.
"No. It's fun! I like to get angry because it's stupid but when I figure it out I feel better about myself. It's a real confidence booster." Matt chirped, going over to the boxes. "Where do you want them?"
Adrian gave Kurt a look when Matt and Blaine walked out, both with big boxes.
"Thank you." Kurt said, getting a piece of pizza and going to sit on the couch.
Adrian came with him but didn't get food. "I get it, you know? With my ex and all."
"Does it get easier?"
"That goofball up there makes it easier but I still get nervous if I'm home alone sometimes." Adrian admitted. "I know Matt's silly but he was really good at what he did and I think he's still going to always be an officer and 'protector of the people' at heart. I saw him take a guy taller than Bob and twice as big as Bob down in five seconds flat once. I used to visit him at the station when I'd gone a couple of days without seeing him. This guy at the station broke away from the guy trying to admit him… I worry a lot less now after seeing Matt take the guy down by himself."
Kurt smiled at him and nodded, letting out a deep breath. That did make him feel better.
"They'll get him. Don't worry."
"How, uhm…"
Adrian tilted his head.
"With your ex still out there… how do you even do it? I can't imagine feeling this way for years."
"You know, sometimes it's rough and I'm overly paranoid but other times I don't even think about it." Adrian confessed. "It's been three years which is the longest it's ever gone, though, so I know it's coming. I'm sure the last name change threw him off or something but he'll be back eventually… I just really hope Matt is there when he shows up."
"Sorry to bring that up. I just… I really hope Matt's here when it happens too." Kurt frowned. "For both of us."
"Don't apologize!" Adrian said. "I'm the one that even brought it up… and I've been thinking about it a lot lately too, actually… Matt's going to Cambridge for two or three days for kidney tests and I'm kind of nervous about it… This might actually be the longest I've been away from him since everything with his kidney, actually."
"You can stay here with us… you know, if you don't mind a child abusing lunatic possibly showing up." Kurt laughed a bit. "Plus, Bob's four houses down."
"Yeah, if Bob gets a hold of him I don't think you'll need to worry about seeing him again." Adrian said.
"Why?"
"Well you know how took two people holding Bob back when his dad showed up at work that one time? He almost got free a couple of times too." Adrian said.
Kurt nodded.
"Well I told Matt and e told me that when Bob was 21 he beat the crap out of Sarah's dad."
"What?" Kurt's eyes widened.
"Yeah. Matt's Dad and Bob are pretty close friends." Adrian nodded. "Bob wasn't arrested or anything because Sarah's mom wouldn't let him press charges. They had a newborn and everything."
"Why did he do it?"
"He told Matt's dad that her dad is pretty abusive towards her mom, her, and her two younger brothers. They took the youngest boy in from fourteen to eighteen, though… and they all try to get her mom to leave." Adrian said. "Long story short, I'm sure Bob would love a go at Blaine's dad."
"How bad did Bob... hurt him?"
"Well he definitely went to the hospital." Adrian said. "It sounds like they're from a pretty small town, though. Matt said the police were probably more than happy to let the guy not press charges."
"Do you like Bob?" Kurt asked.
"He can definitely be a dick and I didn't for, like, three or four years." Adrian admitted. "Ryan taught me how to gauge his moods, though, and that's helped. It's so funny with Blaine, though. He could be slamming papers, Blaine come in not knowing what's up, and he'll treat Blaine completely normal."
"Do people… think it's weird?"
"Honestly half of the new people think Bob's his dad and the others don't pay attention to anything. Anyone from CMJ in Cambridge knows all about Blaine's dad from the whole camp thing so they're super okay with it… Plus, apparently he's usually in a better mood when Blaine is around which makes everyone in the immediate area happier." Adrian laughed. "The office is kind of… like… you don't know everyone but the people you do know get close. It's weird but also kind of cool."
"I always worried about that a bit but didn't want to bring it up or make Blaine worry." Kurt confessed after hearing Matt and Blaine laugh loudly at something.
Adrian gave him a look. "You know Blaine. Only an insane person wouldn't like him with that dopey smile and silly laugh."
"So… I heard you two drunk made out once."
Adrian's eyes widened. "He remembers?"
"Yep." Kurt laughed.
"He totally fell asleep. I was so offended for days." Adrian shook his head. "Sorry about that, though."
"We weren't together." Kurt shrugged and smiled.
"It never would have gone anywhere anyway. We are way too alike." Adrian laughed.
Kurt smiled again and fell silent.
Adrian took a sip of his water.
"You can stay with us when he's gone, you know?" Kurt asked. "Matt. Or we can stay with you?"
"No. It's okay." Adrian smiled. "I'll be fine but thanks."
"Want to go watch them build furniture?"
"Don't you mean attempt to build furniture?" Adrian hopped up. "I'll be so disappointed if they're already finished."
"Ha. No worries there if Blaine's involved. It took him six days to put together a utility cart from Ikea when we first moved in together." Kurt led Adrian upstairs. "We actually got 2. I put the first one together in twenty minutes but he still wouldn't let me help…. The one he did is even lopsided if you look close enough. He of course 'doesn't see it.'"
Adrian let out a loud laugh.
August 2020 (Month 7 – Week 2)
"So." Wes said a week later, joining Blaine and David at a table in the back of a restaurant.
"Oh God." David said. "That never leads to anything good coming from you. You are not the 'so' person."
Blaine yawned, covering his mouth. "Sorry. Kurt wants to change the reception tables again and kept me up until 2:00 weighing the pros and cons between farmhouse tables versus round tables. It literally had to be in last weekend. I don't know why the wedding planner hasn't dropped us yet. I would have five months ago."
"Uh… because it's Kurt Hummel." David said. "Even I've heard is name and that's saying something."
"So, I apparently have really, really, really bad luck." Wes said, ordering a beer when the waitress came to get his drink order.
"You have bad luck at 3:00 on a Saturday?" Blaine asked.
"No. As of, like, 5:00 yesterday… There is a 1% failure rate within five years." Wes said.
"Failure rate of what?" David looked confused.
Wes bent down and pulled a long sheet of paper out of his bag. He then slid it across the table.
"Oh shit!" David gasped.
"Wait! You?!"
Wes pointed to his last name on the sonogram.
"Wait. You're… sure?" David said. "Right?"
"Pfft. Like we're awake enough to have sex with each other and with someone else with Scarlett running around like a banshee all day. I feel like I need to buy my mom a car or something because apparently I was like that too." Wes sighed. "I mean I'm going tomorrow to make sure I'm fertile again because apparently the vas deferens can grow back or reattach themselves… and usually within five years… and we're within that range. But I know Alicia would never cheat on me so it's really just a formality."
"How did you even… know?" Blaine asked. "Seeing as that… wasn't supposed to be an option?"
"The first tip off was her not getting her period two months in a row because it's like clockwork even when she's not on birth control… Second, she's been super bitchy over the most random things like paper towels and their level of… comfort? Whatever the hell that means. Third, she's been super freaking emotional. Literally Matt was talking about this penguin at the zoo that lost its baby and—"
"And Fiona the Hippo. She bawled at the thought of them taking her away from her mom." Blaine said. "Speaking of, did you guys hear about the flamingo that had to be put down?"
"Oh, she has! I can tell you that much. She's very upset at that kid and started crying and then was saying stuff in Spanish and it's usually not good when she's saying stuff in Spanish." Wes sighed. "Lastly, though… peanut butter. I mean honestly we knew before she even went to her lady bit doctor. We really just wanted confirmation."
"At least Scarlett is starting preschool later this month?" David asked.
"Yeah. I guess." Wes sighed a bit. "That shit hurt too and it didn't even work. Think I can sue, Blaine?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's probably something in the contract about them not being liable for that." Blaine laughed. "But… how do you feel about being pregnant again?"
"At the moment I'm irritated but mostly just because I went through that pain for nothing." Wes admitted. "Obviously we're keeping the baby but there's a reason I got snipped, you know? We didn't even want one and now we've got two… Honestly, Alicia's legitimately upset and not just annoyed. I'm just annoyed I was in that excruciating pain and spent all the money for fucking nothing. If she'd stayed on the pill it would have been less likely to happen."
David frowned.
"In a few days I'm sure I'll be excited but I think we're both in shock right now." Wes took a big drink of his beer.
"AJ's upset, though?" Blaine frowned.
"Yeah. Honestly, as soon as Scarlett went to bed last night Alicia bawled for like three hours. I feel horrible. She's so tiny and being pregnant was rough on her the first time without an almost four year old to chase around. Plus, she got morning sickness really bad with Scarlett so I know it's going to get worse." Wes groaned. "March 2021 Chang family of four."
"Wow." Blaine's voice was soft. "You two need to go ahead and get married."
David burst into loud laughter. "If anything will push it, surely that will."
They could tell Wes was trying to maintain a straight face but he did smile. "Yeah. Can we just go after you two, Blaine?"
"Sure. Why not? Just don't tell Kurt." Blaine laughed.
"Are you going to get married, though? You two have been engaged for… like… well, several months before Scarlett was born." David laughed too.
"You know we started to plan it again and it ended with Alicia in tears but we've also just been too crazy busy to worry about it since then." Wes admitted. "I mean… my parents want Chinese culture… hers wants Mexican culture… and… I mean, let's be real. My grandparents were born here. Alicia became a citizen when she was, like, four. Her last name is Johnson because her family wanted an American last name. I don't know what in the hell we're going to do because it's more important for her family because they are from there, they don't just have family history there. We don't freaking care. Honestly, I would be fine with going to the courthouse but we suggested that and both of our parents flipped out."
"Wait. Is Spanish her first language?" David looked surprised.
"Yes and her second language is LSM. Third is English and fourth is ASL." Wes said.
"Damn. All of this by what age?"
"Eight or nine."
"Woah." David's eyes widened.
"She's super smart." Wes said. "I do better on tests but she is so much smarter than me. She just gets nervous during exams and makes silly mistakes… one reason why I flubbed the last final because she deserved Valedictorian a lot more than me."
"And I barely passed French…" Blaine's eyes were wide.
"Well you and Kurt spent most of your tutoring French kissing." David pointed out.
"That's true." Blaine nodded. "But congrats!"
"Thanks." Wes smiled and then shrugged a bit, looking at the sonogram pictures again. "It'll all be fine. We just need to… let it sink in and come up with a plan… and, yeah. Get married. I was looking up the traditions online and… I mean, Mexican traditions weren't too crazy but my family would not be okay with a money dance. My mom is sticking to the 'good luck' days whatever that means. Also, it's bad luck to come into contact with a pregnant woman on the wedding day in Chinese culture so what the hell do we do there? Temporarily remove the baby and put it back in?" Wes threw his hands in the air. "Alicia wants to just shotgun wedding it and I'm kind of leaning towards it too."
"No! I knowfor a fact that AJ wants a wedding ceremony. She and Adrian have talked about it." Blaine said. "Even if she said that, she's downplaying what she wants."
"Yeah. Girls are all for the white dresses and wedding parties." David said. "But if you all do a court thing, you better let us know because we want to be there!"
"Yeah don't pull an Adrian and Matt." Blaine said and then got a worried look on his face.
"Oh, she figured it out. He forgot to take the ring off once." Wes shrugged. "Don't tell Adrian, though."
"Okay, good." Blaine let out a relieved sigh.
"When are you proposing?" Wes gave David a look.
"Next Saturday when my parents have the kids." David said. "If she doesn't ruin it for herself… again."
"Why don't you tell us this stuff?!" Blaine exclaimed.
"Well mostly because I just had the idea three hours ago." David shrugged. "Wes' news kind of trumped mine."
"You've had the ring for a year and a half. It's about time." Wes laughed, seeming a bit perkier.
"She keeps ruining it for herself!" David exclaimed. "I'm not going to give it to her when she's expecting it. I literally have arranged it six times but she figures it out and gets super excited and then I'm like 'nope, sorry.'"
"You should just do it in the middle of the ER." Blaine joked.
"Because that's romantic amongst the diseases, guts, and blood. Her mother would kill me… My mother would kill me… Eric would kill me. All the nurses are, like, obsessed with us in the ER. Even the straight male ones." David sighed. "When it finally happens and we go back into work, it'll be madness."
"What are you going to do?" Blaine asked excitedly. "How are you going to do it? Where? I need answers, David!"
"The botanical garden. She drags me there all the time and, honestly, she'll probably suggest it which works out super well for me because she'll not expect it. She won't go there with the kids anymore because Ollie swallowed like four pebble rocks last time." David laughed. "Which obviously was my fault… I'm supposed to hold the baby and watch the toddler while she eats M&M's and takes pictures. Okay."
"Oliver is my sprit animal." Wes laughed. "And Marcy is my favorite—second only to Alicia, of course."
"If Ollie makes it to eighteen, I may or may not be surprised. He's taken to drinking out of the toilet so I just… what? It's not like we have a cat or dog so where'd he get that?" David shook his head. "If he wasn't clearly half black I would think he was Wes' child."
"I resent that statement." Wes pouted. "Scarlett quacks in public now. If someone says something to her in a store she'll just start quacking but also walking like she's a chicken. And we're bringing another one into the world?"
"You two have very weird kids." Blaine said. "I hope mine are normal."
Both David and Wes burst into loud laughter.
"What?" Blaine scoffed.
"Between you and Kurt, your kids are screwed." David laughed.
"That is so rude." Blaine pouted. "Although we're still basically using Matt as a bodyguard so it could be true."
Both David and Wes frowned.
"They still haven't found him?" Wes asked.
"No but David's dad actually saw him in Westerville. Nick gave me a head's up too but who knows how long he'll be there." Blaine sighed a bit. "It's really upsetting Kurt. I feel so bad that all of this is happening right before the wedding but at least he has that to take his mind off it?"
"How do you feel?"
"I don't know. Part of me is terrified and wants to look around every time I take a step, part of me just wants him to do whatever he's going to do, and part of me just wants to punch him." Blaine bit his lip. "However, every time I see him I have a panic attack. The only reason I didn't last time was because it all happened so fast that my mind hadn't properly caught up before Kurt was punching him."
"No." Wes said. "It was probably because your dad didn't have time to say his usual speech before Kurt punched him. If you could just block his words out when he talks…"
"Easier said than done, I guess." Blaine shrugged. "Our wedding coming up in a little more than two weeks and the twins being born not that long after…"
"I WON THE BET. PAY UP, WES!" David suddenly gasped.
"What? Are you serious? You want $600 when I just found out I'm responsible for another mouth?" Wes sulked, grabbing his wallet. "I've honestly been carrying the cash since February but was hoping you'd forgotten."
"Shouldn't make bets if you don't wanna pay up. These two are so predictable." David shrugged.
Blaine looked at David. "You're really taking that money?"
"Blaine, this bet has been in place since the day you met Kurt and serenaded him with Katy Perry. By the way, if that song isn't played during your reception I think all of the Warblers may die. I'm surprised they haven't tried to arrange a performance."
"Oh my God." Blaine groaned. "They can't. Bob won't let me live that down."
"Does he let you live anything down, though?" Wes asked, tilting his head.
"Actually… no. He'll probably start journaling about me like David." Blaine sighed.
"Maybe he'd like to read my journals." David said thoughtfully. "Marcy spent her last day off of work reading them. I got so many texts when I was at work and she had a list of questions written down for when I got home."
Blaine covered his face and the other two could hear him groan into his hands.
"I'm going to win the next one, though." Wes pointed at David, very used to seeing Blaine like that.
"We'll see." David shrugged.
"What is it?" Blaine asked, lowering his hands.
"Well you've gone over, what, two years without a car accident?" Wes asked.
Blaine shot him a look.
"My bet is you're going to get into one… on your way to the wedding venue… on your wedding day." Wes said cheerfully.
"Yeah, he tried to get more specific too but just no." David shrugged again.
"How… specific?" Blaine looked between them.
"Red car on that intersection four blocks down." Wes said. "And you'll have to wear someone else's shirt because yours will get bloody."
"Don't jinx me!" Blaine's eyes widened.
"It wasn't a big deal until the blood?" David looked amused.
"Uh, yeah, because Kurt is all bent out of shape about the pictures. Honestly he should be glad he got more than five good ones out of the engagement shoot because I am not a pretty crier." Blaine frowned.
"So…" David said. "How do you feel about taking the plunge?"
"I'm excited but kind of anxious for it to be over. I want things to go back to normal so we can get ready for the boys and spend time together without having to worry about colors and tables and glasses. I'm also super excited to see the Warblers… the ones I remember." Blaine cringed. "Oh my God!"
"What?" David's eyes widened.
"Last Saturday we had a meeting with the wedding planner. Kurt bailed and made me go alone with Rachel Berry! Hudson. Whatever."
Wes put his head on the table, letting out a loud laugh. "Did you suck her face again?"
Blaine chose to ignore Wes' comment. "God I should have just let her change everything for payback. Let's have a unicorn wedding. Or maybe we can just all act like we're in glee club again—no, Wes. Don't even take that as a serious idea."
"But… I could find the gavel." Wes looked up. "Oh my God. We could do Somewhere Only We Know! Or… Or… When I Get you alone!"
David threw his head back, laughing loudly.
"I will literally kill you all and then Kurt will kill me. He specifically asked for that to not happen."
"What about right before the first dance?" David asked and then gave Wes a weird look. "You stole your gavel?"
"Come on. Nobody loves that thing as much as me. I should have gone into law so I could be a judge and slam it every day."
"Yeah, they don't really do that very much." Blaine said. "They usually just yell. If you can't control a courtroom without a gavel, you shouldn't be a judge."
"No law talk. Back to my gavel and Kurt killing us. We could do it before the first dance."
"You can't because we aren't having any first dances." Blaine said calmly.
"What?"
"Neither of us have moms." Blaine gave him a weird look.
"Kurt can dance with Carole and you can split the time between our moms." David said.
"No. We already decided no mother son dance and no first dance."
"You two aren't going to have a first dance?!" Wes asked.
"No. It's just… I don't know. We decided together that when everyone leaves, we'll have our own dance alone after everyone leaves."
"You are not cleaning up after your own wedding, Anderson." David scoffed. "No. You two are going before any of that. I am holding the gifts at my house and I'll bring the cards in case there's any honeymoon money or gift cards in them."
"You all should totally dance to Blackbird." Wes gasped.
Blaine and David both gave him horrified looks.
"Fine then. Don't judge me. It's sentimental. Why not Your Song by Elton John? Throw in some gay?"
"Yeah and we'll walk out to Hedwig's Theme." Blaine scoffed. He then giggled. "Could you imagine Kurt's face if that started playing?"
"You've got to do a first dance, Blaine. Seriously." David said. "You two will regret it. Kurt's all about being the center of attention and, trust me, it's the last time you two will be the center of attention because when those twins come knocking, you guys are cliff notes."
"Oh my God. Serenade him with Do Ya Think I'm Sexy. Please." Wes gasped.
"You're nuts, Wes." Blaine sighed. "I have to get back to work, though. Matt's coming over later than usual tonight and I want to make sure Kurt isn't home alone. If I don't finish my paperwork for tomorrow's arraignment, I won't beat him there."
"Blainers is all important and always leaving us." David sighed.
"Don't even. You've bailed on us five Thursdays in a row." Wes said. "Not cool, Daviel."
David rolled his eyes.
"Okay. Well, Wes, congrats. David if I don't see you before Saturday, good luck. Tell the women and children I said hello." Blaine stood and grabbed his messenger bag. "Also, please, no Warbler performances. I'd like to make it to wedding sex, okay?"
As soon as Blaine was out of earshot, Wes grinned. "Warbler performance?"
"Hell no. Any time you pull one on Blaine, he pulls one three times as bad on you." David shook his head.
Wes sighed as his phone started to ring. "See you later, David."
"Bye, Wes!" David said and pulled out his phone since it had started to ring as well.
August 2020 (Month 7 – Week 3)
"Oh my God. It's done."
Alec, who had already made it to the coffee shop he and Kurt usually hid at on their too-long lunches, looked up.
"Everything is paid for and, as of yesterday, there is nothing else to do!"
"For the wedding?"
"Yes!" Kurt said excitedly and then added, much less cheerful, "We still have a lot to do before the twins get here but I think my parents are coming up early for the wedding. Well, my dad and stepmom I guess."
"Your dad is so funny." Alec laughed.
"I think Dad and Carole are more excited than Blaine and me at the moment… then again we're in wedding madness and all they have to do is show up."
"But now that's all you've gotta do too!" Alec grinned.
"It's like the calm before the storm." Kurt looked thoughtful. "We were pretty anxious until Friday and now we're not even really freaking out about the wedding."
Alec gave him a look.
"Okay, so, we are but not quite as freaked out? I'm kind of afraid Blaine's dad will show up and try to sabotage the whole wedding." Kurt admitted.
"The venue as security and with your status, they've tripled it. I don't think you need to worry about that." Alec said. "My work had a Christmas party there two years ago and even with barebone security, they were checking ID's even if they'd already let you through before."
"That makes me feel a lot better actually." Kurt let out a little sigh of relief.
"So. Work. You think you'll have everything done by next Thursday when you're time off starts?"
"I should have everything done Monday and the other built in days I'll just critique other people's stuff for something to do." Kurt shrugged.
"What about Blaine?"
"He says he's good on time. "Kurt nodded, smiling. "He's trying to get all of his work stuff wrapped up. His last trial is next Thursday. Assuming it doesn't turn into a multiple day thing, he'll spend the Friday through Wednesday getting all of his paperwork taken care of and as of Thursday we're both off work until the 13th."
"Eric and I should get married again so I can have a week off." Alec laughed. "I am so sick of work. Oh my God. My trust fund looks really good right about now."
"Right?" Kurt sighed. He then added, "Not that I have one."
Alec laughed again. "So, how does it feel? A little over a week and you'll be Kurt Anderson-Hummel."
"It feels like this has been eleven or twelve years in the making." Kurt beamed. "I can't wait. I can't wait to be married and to have the twins and to do normal life with him until we're old and gray… okay, I can wait for that part, actually."
"Are you all doing bachelor parties?"
"No. I mean, Wes and David are trying to talk him into a sleep over the night before but I kind of hope they don't do it. It doesn't take much alcohol to get Blaine tipsy and after he's tipsy, it's not long before he's drunk." Kurt looked thoughtful. "Maybe we shouldn't have alcohol at the wedding."
"It doesn't take you long to get tipsy either. Me either."
"As Eric let us know two years ago when he had to pick us up." Kurt laughed. "Didn't he have to leave work?"
"Yeah and then he locked us in the break room and then David took us home when he got off." Alec laughed. "Eric was so annoyed because the nurses talked about how cute we were for days."
"Yeah. David told me that."
"You lived with him then, didn't you?"
"Yes. I don't think he told Blaine, though… he did say I was much easier to take care of than Blaine is, though… which makes sense because Blaine is a hyper, adorable, stupid, hilarious drunk."
"I can see that. I wonder if he'll get drunk at the wedding."
"He probably would if my Dad left early but there's no way he'll miss a minute." Kurt said and then grinned. "It's literally next Saturday. Oh my God. I don't even know what to think or do right now because I'm so excited. I haven't been able to get real sleep in four days because I keep thinking about how everything is falling into place and how we're going to be daddies soon."
"Your follow up appointment is today, right?"
"Yeah, it's at 2:00 so I'm actually probably not even going to go back to work. Marc is off this week anyway so I've literally just been looking up baby stuff online all day. Oh, and tomorrow I think I'm going to find a bunch of recipes for Harry Potter treats to give him on the plane."
"You guys are too adorable. It's really not fair."
"I need to quit smiling or I'm going to get wrinkles. Ugh." Kurt groaned. "So, what's it like after the I do's?"
"Well we lived together for more than three years so it didn't change much except now I lose my ring and freak out twice a week… and Eric finds my ring twice a week and gives me the 'I spent too much money on this ring for you to lose it' look." Alec said. "Also, when one of us isn't in the mood for sex, we'll complain about the other not fulfilling husbandly duties."
"We never really have that problem."
"Then you're good to go! Don't worry. You'll hear people say stuff will change but nothing really has for us." Alec shrugged. "The only thing that will change is you two will get to be the most adorable daddies in the world. I can't wait for your twins to be born. Eric can, though."
"Why?" Kurt laughed.
"I keep bugging him for a baby. Can I just play with your twins a lot?"
"Of course not." Kurt joked. "With how it goes, we may even give you one."
"Oh, Eric would love that." Alec said. "Did you see the new picture that was posted?"
"Oh God. Do you follow that tag too?" Kurt groaned.
"Yeah." Alec held out his phone.
Kurt took it, seeing his high school graduation photo. "Ugh."
"Oh, it's cute."
"Doesn't mean everyone needs to see it." Kurt glanced down at his watch.
"Gotta go see those babies?"
"Through a screen for now but not for long." Kurt hopped up.
"Text me pictures of the pictures."
"I will. See you tomorrow!" Kurt smiled and left.
…
"They never keep us back here this long. She's been back there for an hour."
Blaine, who had just typed a text to Bob saying he was going to be a lot later than he thought, looked up. "Did she say she'd had a regular appointment yesterday? Why is she coming two days in a row anyway?"
"I don't know. I guess it was tests?"
"If it was tests, why are we here today?"
"I don't know." Kurt took a deep breath. "Do you think she cancelled yesterday?"
Blaine took a deep breath himself, not answering.
They both jumped up when their usual tech came out, calling their name.
"Is everything okay?" Kurt and Blaine asked at the same time when they entered the room where Quinn was. Her stressed facial expression did not help.
"Okay." The doctor said once they made it to the bed. "First of all, I don't want you to freak out because this is not uncommon. Your twins are not identical meaning they don't share the same placenta."
"Okay but what's wrong?" Kurt asked, looking at Quinn.
"We are pretty far into the pregnancy and the twins are not identical, meaning they do not share a plancenta." The doctor repeated "Twins should grow at the same rate and at around 30 to 32 weeks, it begins to slow down."
"Okay?"
Blaine could see Kurt's father coming out—Kurt was getting impatient.
"Baby A is growing at a normal rate but Baby B's growing… has slowed."
"Why?" Blaine asked.
"Sometimes there will be an unequal distribution of nutrients. It's Type 1 so we're going to keep an eye on him. We'll have weekly ultrasounds to monitor both of their growth and to make sure that it doesn't progress to type 2 or 3."
"Type 2 or 3 of what?" Quinn asked.
"IUGR which is short for intrauterine growth restriction. Simply put, there may not be enough room for Baby B to grow at the same rate as Baby A. There is no need to freak out yet, though, because there is time for this to get better." The doctor said.
"Worst case scenarios?" Blaine asked. "Stillbirth, disabilities, or prolonged time in a NICU." The doctor said. "But—"
Tears filled Kurt's eyes and he covered his mouth.
"But." She said again. "What we are seeing now does now indicate this as a possibility. We have a waiting game scenario right now. Measurement wise, he's about 3 pounds small for his age and the other baby is about one pound too big which means Baby A is, like I said, getting too many of the nutrients. You should know we did a cord flow test and it's perfect. There is no sign that he's in distress and his organs are doing well. Right now we just have a smaller baby than we'd like."
Kurt took a deep breath when Blaine squeezed his hand. "What do we do?"
"We're about 32 weeks so we're going to start having weekly ultrasounds so we can keep an eye on his progress. If we see anything worrisome, we meet twice a week." She said gently. "It sounds scary. I know it does. Right now I just urge you to know that this may not be a big deal… but I also want to make you aware in case it worsens."
"This is why we take the measurements every time. So we catch it in the beginning and we have. "His abdomen is about two weeks behind, his femur and humerus are about four. His head is right on track, though, and his organs are healthy."
"Best case scenario, what happens?" Blaine asked.
"He'll be born healthy but a little smaller than a usual twin and he'll still be able to go home with his brother within 36 hours." The doctor said. "I do want to be very proactive with this, though. All of us are going to have a meeting with the neonatal doctors from the hospital of your choice. I deliver frequently at Mount Sinai and Lenox Hill but if you have another preference, we will get with that hospital and see what their doctors think."
"Which is better?" Kurt asked, looking worried.
"I personally prefer and my children were born at Mount Sinai on Levy. One of the head doctors there now actually has a father who created a heart surgery tool that has saved millions of his lives and his son is the top peds person there although he works between two departments. He's really good and pretty much lives there. They'll pull him off the other department, though, for the birth." She said. "They're neonatal, peds, and ICU departments are one of the best in my opinion."
"Eric Davis?" Blaine asked.
"You've heard of him?" The doctor looked surprised.
"He's a close friend actually."
"If you're uncomfortable with that—"
"No." Kurt and Blaine said together.
"So are we comfortable setting up a meeting with them sometime this week?" She asked.
"I'll clear whatever day I need to." Blaine said when Kurt looked at him.
"Okay. I will make some calls and be in touch with a time, then. We'll meet here for ease sake." She said as Quinn sat up.
"Can you guys wait for me?" Quinn asked. She almost never did, so they knew she must have been worried.
"We'll be outside the door." Blaine said and walked out of the room without a goodbye. He did hear Kurt say it, though, so that made him feel a little bit better.
"Fuck." Kurt took a deep breath, willing tears not to fall.
"I'm freaking out." Blaine admitted, his hands shaking.
"Me too." Kurt nodded.
They waited in silence for Quinn to get dressed and come out. All three of them walked out together, still not speaking.
Finally, Quinn spoke. "I am so sorry, guys."
"No." Blaine shook his head quickly. "We all heard them. They said it may not be—it might not—"
"I've been doing everything I'm supposed to. Not eating what I'm not supposed to, eating stuff good for the baby, taking the vitamins." Quinn sniffled.
"This isn't anything you did!" Kurt grabbed her hand and squeezed it.
"I know. She said a risk for it happening is multiples." Quinn nodded, wiping her eyes. "I just feel bad because I can't do anything to stop it, you know?"
"Stressing isn't going to help anybody. Especially the babies." Blaine said. "We need to try to not worry. I mean… we know Eric and he's really good. David's basically high right hand person with kids so that means Eric and David will be the ones with both babies."
Quinn nodded.
"David is so good that the hospital offered him a lot of money and made a position for him. They took him back from one of the best pediatric offices in the city." Kurt said.
"Yeah and David is very straight forward. Eric too. They won't sugarcoat anything but they also won't make it sound better than it is." Blaine told her. "Not that I'm saying the OBGYN will but David's my brother."
"Did they tell you anything else when we weren't back there?" Kurt asked.
"No. Just the same stuff. I tried to ask what would happen if the baby doesn't keep growing but it sounded like she wanted me to ask the two guys you all know."
Blaine pulled out his phone, typing out a text.
Can I come see you?
At the hospital. Why?
IURG?
IUGR you mean?
One of the twins might have it. Can I see you when you're off?
I'll text you. Marcy's home if you want to call her now, though.
Blaine put his phone in his pocket, feeling frustrated.
He knew David couldn't help it and didn't expect him to drop everything. Honestly, he was surprised David had seen his text so quickly since he was at work.
He really didn't blame David at all.
He just wanted someone to make him— all three of them— feel better.
"What did he say?" Kurt asked.
"He's at work. He said he'd text me when he could but we could ask Marcy."
"Marcy works in the ER. Not with the children." Kurt groaned, leaning against his car.
Quinn grabbed Kurt's hand, putting it higher up on her belly. Baby B was kicking—and it was just as hard a Baby A's kicks were.
Blaine came over, putting his hand there as well and letting out a relieved sigh.
…
"But they said it could be just fine?"
"Yeah but they were talking about early births and how they'd have to have a team there for each baby and we have to go for weekly ultrasounds and I just—we're getting married next Saturday and I would rather see my dad every day for the rest of my life to just have them both be okay. What if only one lives? Or both die? Or—"
"You have got to quit jumping to worst case scenario, Blaine." Bob looked him in the eyes.
"This is worst case scenario."
"No. This is very far from worst case scenario." Bob shook his head. "This is something that may noteven materialize into a problem. There are two full months left and he could continue growing at a healthy but slower rate. The reason they're doing it every week is to monitor it. It happens to 25% of twins. You just told me that. That's a big percentage, Blaine."
"Yeah but—"
"But nothing. You're going to a doctor every week so they will know what is going on and what they need to do to help the babies." Bob said calmly.
"But—"
"Look, Blaine. Sarah and I have had five children."
"Okay?" Blaine looked at him impatiently. "What does that have to do with the twins? This morning it was a normal pregnancy and now it's been elevated to high risk."
Bob gave him an amused look.
"What?" Blaine asked impatiently, checking his phone to see if David had texted him for the millionth time since getting to CMJ and making a beeline to Bob's office.
Really, he was lucky that Bob would drop anything for him because he'd seen and heard Bob turn several people down when working on stuff. If it wasn't Brian, Blaine, or Adrian he 'much preferred schedule meetings.'
Any time Blaine was in panic mode, though, they did this. Left wherever they were. Went to a restaurant or a park to get away and talk where nobody else could hear. And then Bob did the dad thing—something Blaine was still getting used to, honestly.
But still. Blaine could feel bad about being sassy later.
"So, I can tell you that four out of my five children were high risk pregnancies." Bob said, his voice still calm. "Active high risk pregnancies. We are talking the worst case scenario."
Blaine looked at him as though he were confused.
"When Sarah was pregnant with Charlie she got Preeclampsia, gave birth at 33 weeks, and Charlie didn't leave the hospital for two and a half months. Luckily it was summer break… With Brady Sarah got, like, Epilepsy. Who the fuck even knows that happens?" Bob was counting on his fingers. "We're talking middle of a conversation, drops down to the floor, full on seizures multiple times a week. Honestly nothing will ever scare me more than seeing her drop like that did every single time."
Blaine stared at him, eyes wide.
"With Sam she went into early labor four times and ended up in the hospital for a week at a time each. He ended up being born three weeks early and was completely fine after but it was also a rough c-section delivery—because Sam tried to come naturally I don't know how many times and they had to stop it but it comes down to it, they try to induce her, Sam won't come and they have to do a c-section because when they're saying he's gotta come he won't freaking budge? I still tell him when he develops games and makes good money, he's gotta pay me back for all of those hospital stays."
Blaine rolled his eyes, although he was starting to feel a little better.
Which usually—okay, always— happened when they had their talks like this.
"She had gestational diabetes with Emily. Worst fucking four months of my life and hers. She really likes her sugar, Blaine. And the later in life, after 40, considered high risk pregnancy without any other issues? Smooth as can be. Judging by all of that you'd think Miles would have had serious issues but nope. Just got a rough infection two weeks after he was born but other than that, smooth sailing. Do you get what I'm saying?"
"The more times you get pregnant, the better your chances are?"
Bob gave him a look. The look. The 'I'm annoyed but trying to be nice because I love you and I don't know if we're there yet' look.
"Let me put it this way. At least you won't have to catch your own baby like Mallory's husband did. Big snowstorm. Literally two hours before anyone could get to her even after the baby was born. This was, like, fifty billion years ago in Maine with real country roads, but still."
"Oh, I bet she hated that."
"Yeah, I fucking did too because I had to help. I literally vomited eight times throughout the next five hours after Sadie was born." Bob looked sick to his stomach. "Word to the wise, don't get curious and look when she's pushing. Not that I had a choice since I was right there helping."
"You had to help deliver her baby?"
"Yeah because three fucking adult brothers but the fifteen year old boy is the only one that will help." Bob scoffed. "No wonder I didn't have sex until I was seventeen. On the bright side, I'm the favorite uncle. OH! Also, if you ever are present at a c-section and they put up that curtain and tell you not to look, don't do it. Yeah, I did because I thought I could handle it and nearly passed out. The most disgusting and terrifying thing I have ever seen in my whole fucking life. Childbirth is brutal! Women are fucking beasts."
"Now I feel sick to my stomach. Thanks." Blaine frowned.
"Yeah, me too." Bob sighed. "Still, helping deliver Mallory's baby was more traumatic. There are many things you don't want to see of your sister… the vagina is number two. Number one? A baby coming out of said vagina. And my freaking much older brothers running away. Ugh."
"Do you really hate your brothers?" Blaine titled his head.
"I hate everyone." Bob gave him a look. "You heard them in my house two days after my dad died. What do you think?"
"They are pretty loud." Blaine nodded and took a deep breath. "But I don't think you hate them."
"Listen." Bob said, turning so he was facing Blaine but not answering Blaine's original question. "There is literally nothing you can do but hope for the best and provide everything that Quinn needs. You're still going to freak out because I know I did twice a day at least but… but don't freak out too much until you have reason to. It could be smooth sailing and the baby just needs extra monitoring."
Blaine looked doubtful. "But they're putting together teams."
"When it comes to labor and babies, it's better to overprepare than to be caught off guard without back up. Doctors are always going to err of the safe side because it's literally what they are taught to do. Ask Charlie. Expect the worst case scenario and be ready for but hopefully you won't need it. Shit. Ask David. He's a real doctor"
"That's the good thing, actually." Blaine said. "Eric and David work with the babies and they'll be the pediatricians at delivery."
"Do you trust them?"
Blaine nodded.
"Then don't worry." Bob shook Blaine's thigh. "Plus, you know they'll be upfront… I know you'll worry, but… try not to."
"Wanna talk to Kurt too?" Blaine laughed.
"If you all want to come over tonight, I will gladly talk to him too." Bob nodded as his phone vibrated. He looked at it and sighed. "I've gotta go back. You coming?"
"Unfortunately." Blaine sighed. "To not-Boss-Bob. To Boss-Bob, nothing would make me happier."
Bob rolled his eyes and stood. "Back to hell."
…
"What's going on in here?"
Blaine and Bob had made it back to the office and were passing Adrian's office. Ryan, Brian, and three police officers were inside.
Brian gave Bob a look—Blaine couldn't even describe the look— and then came out. "C'mon, Blaine. Let's go to my office."
"What?" Blaine looked confused.
"Just do it." Bob's voice was urgent—the most 'like a boss' voice he'd heard geared at him yet.
Blaine looked in, seeing Matt. "Matt? I thought you were in Cambridge for doctor visits?"
"Blaine." Bob gave him a look—one he'd seen Bob give Brady and Sam when they were 'on his nerves.'
"I'll call you." Matt said, making eye contact. He did not look good.
Blaine looked at Ryan, who looked like he was going to be sick to his stomach and like he would rather be anywhere else.
"Come on." Brian nudged Blaine back down the hall.
"What happened? Didn't Adrian call in today?"
"He was a no call, no show." Brian said.
Tammy Jo, who wasn't even supposed to be there that day but always said hello to everyone, quickly walked past them without even a smile.
"What's going on?" Blaine demanded, pulling out his phone. "I will call him."
"He won't pick up, Blaine." Brian sounded impatient. "I know you're his friend but this is bigger than work, okay? There are police in his office."
"He didn't do anything."
"No, he didn't. Someone did something to him." Brian said and then his eyes widened. "Shit."
"No." Blaine shook his head. "There's no way. He's got a security system, he's got cameras. Matt just left yesterday morning."
Brian didn't say anything.
"This morning?"
"I shouldn't have said anything."
"But you did so you may as well just finish." Blaine gave him a look.
"You are spending way too much time with Bob." Brian sighed. "It happened last night."
"Okay but they aren't here until 4:00 if it happened last night? Why weren't they here when I got here earlier?"
"Adrian waited and didn't call Matt until around eight this morning… They were at the hospital for six hours doing the exam and talking to the police. That's why they're in his office so late in the day. They're trying to find out how he knew where Adrian lived and trying to make sure the office wasn't bugged or something."
Blaine turned right back around, going into Adrian's office. He then went and sat next to Matt, who was sitting in front of Adrian's desk.
"Blaine…" Bob said, an edge in his voice.
"Chad?" Blaine asked Matt.
"My dad's with Adrian now." Matt said. "I, uhm… I think we're going back to Cambridge for a few weeks. I don't know if… the wedding…"
Blaine shook his head as Matt took a deep breath, ignoring the look he knew he was probably getting from Bob.
That didn't matter, though. Right now Adrian and Matt mattered.
"I shouldn't have gone. I should have taken him with me." Matt said as the police officers stepped into the hallway after saying something to Ryan.
"Matt, you have to go to these kidney checkups." Bob said as Tammy Jo ruffled his messy hair. Blaine realized he'd never seen Matt with messy hair. Except the two times he saw him during his six week recovery.
"Will you… I'll get the money… I—" Matt took a deep breath, making eye contact with Bob.
"Don't worry about money." Bob said, shaking his head.
Matt covered his face with his hands, beginning to cry.
Blaine hopped up and bent down, wrapping his arms around Matt and whispering in his ear.
All he could think about was Adrian going back in after Preston had almost raped him. How Adrian had checked on him afterwards several times. And how he had a feeling that Adrian's ex had probably raped him before… and that was why he was afraid to really date. Why he'd tried so many times to push Matt away.
"Everything else is on hold if a trial date hasn't been set." Tammy Jo said. "And we'll send anyone from Cambridge that can help with anything, Matt."
"And we'll get his cases covered." Ryan said. "He doesn't need to worry about work."
"With pay of course." Bob added.
Matt nodded into Blaine's shoulder.
"Does… AJ…?" Blaine asked.
"Not yet." Matt pulled back and took a deep breath as Bob left to talk to the police.
Blaine looked at Ryan, who suddenly bent down and vomited into Adrian's trashcan.
"Okay." Tammy Jo said. "Come on. You go home. I'm not taking no for an answer, Ryan."
Ryan didn't protest, just wiped his mouth and walked out without a word.
Brian went over, grabbed the bag out of the can, tied it up, and walked out of Adrian's office.
"I don't know what to do." Matt looked at Blaine.
"Just be there." Blaine said as Bob came back into the office.
"Do you think he wants to talk now?" Bob asked Matt. "Or do you think he'd rather wait? What do you need me to do, Matthew?"
"Can you come now and… and if he isn't ready…?"
"Of course." Bob nodded.
"Did they find anything here?" Blaine asked.
"No. Nothing obvious at least. They may have another team come back tomorrow to double check. Brian's staying late so they can switch the locks on his office but I don't know how anyone could have gotten anything from here. You can't even get into personal information anymore since Martin updated everything after that intern and… Obviously, Adrian would know if the guy had shown up here. I can't imagine he wouldn't have told someone." Bob said.
"He would have told me." Matt's voice was soft.
"They're taking security inside and outside footage of the building from the last three months, though. If anything, maybe he would have followed Adrian home? This is such a huge city, though."
"Adrian is super paranoid about people following him. If a car follows him too long, he'll go far out of his way to lose them." Matt said.
Blaine frowned, looking down at his hands and twisting his engagement ring around his finger.
Because he didn't know that. Yeah, he knew Adrian had a bad ex… but honestly, it hadn't come up after he'd had that severe asthma attack when they were still in Harvard. Adrian didn't even talk about it after the three rape cases he'd taken—and he'd never seemed any different, either.
But he was still living like that? Losing cars if they were behind him too long? Taking rape cases when he'd been raped himself?
"How long has this been going on?" Bob asked. "Tammy Jo, Ryan, and I know bare minimum."
"They split up when he was eighteen or nineteen. He started undergrad at nineteen but still graduated on time." Matt said. "It had been more than three years and I thought… I don't know, he thought I was still an officer and was staying away, I guess? But I've always checked the cameras once a week and nobody weird was ever outside of the apartment. Nobody broke in until last night. I don't know how this happened. Oh my God. What did I miss? He didn't just get lucky and show up the first day I'm not home in a year two and a half years. Every time I was at Blaine and Kurt's, Adrian was with me. He doesn't like to be home alone and I left him here. I know the guy never got in the house before because I watched the cameras. And last night is all on tape! That guy did it and that camera was very obviously there. It's not hidden. He didn't care."
"You didn't know this was going to happen, Matt." Blaine whispered as Matt's phone started to ring.
Matt picked it up, stepping out into the hall. "Hey, I'm about to be on my way to you. Do you want anything?"
Blaine looked at Bob, who had a blank expression on his face—and that was something Blaine had never seen. Happy, amused, annoyed, mad, pissed, bored… never blank.
"Can you meet now? I can call Dad and figure out exactly where they are." Matt came back in. "He said now if you're okay with it."
"Yes." Bob nodded. "Wait up front? I need to talk to Tammy and Brian really quick but I'll come up and meet you."
"Will you wait with me?" Matt asked Blaine somewhat pitifully—it reminded him of when Adrian getting back from the hospital years ago and Matt had broken down, not knowing what to do.
"Yes." Blaine nodded and stood, typing out a quick text to Kurt that he would be on his way soon.
August 2020 (Month 7 – Week 4)
Quinn, Kurt, and Blaine walked into first weekly update the following Wednesday a week prior. Quinn was tightly gripping Kurt's hand because, honestly, she was as worried as he was.
It was all Kurt had thought about since their last visit. He'd only stressed himself out even more trying to Google it. He hadn't found much real information, but he'd spent enough time reading three year old message boards with mothers freaking out.
Of course, the same mothers never came back to say if their twins had been fine which had made him even more nervous.
"We aren't going to the usual room?" Kurt asked anxiously.
"Don't be alarmed." The tech smiled at him. "We did an ultrasound yesterday to prepare. We've got some doctors from Mount Sinai here. Dr. Gaines likes to be overly thorough sometimes but I'm sure you three are okay with that."
Kurt nodded, stepping in and seeing Eric and David, both in scrubs, laughing at something on Eric's phone. There was also another female doctor who was older than both of them, who looked like she was trying to not laugh as well.
"Hey, stranger!" Blaine waved, instantly feeling less anxious than he had seconds prior.
"They didn't tell us the name but I had a feeling it was you." David said as Eric answered a call, waving to them.
"No, she's paranoid. She doesn't need more. Just tell her to wait until I get back." Eric said into the phone, looking annoyed. "I mean, you can give her a Tylenol... Look, why don't you get a resident to help if you don't feel comfortable with that?"
David looked amused as Eric rolled his eyes.
"No. Look, just go help out at the free clinic, okay? I'll get Harry to do it. Yep. No, seriously. You take the clinic and have Jennifer take the ER shift. Thank you." Eric hung up and typed out a text. He then looked at David, clearly annoyed.
"Told you he was an idiot… sorry, chief." David shrugged and then sent the woman a look.
"It's not my direct report. I don't care what you call him." The woman shrugged.
"Sorry." Eric told everyone. "Don't be surprised if that nurse calls back five times."
"That wasn't a student? Why isn't the head nurse answering him?" The woman asked.
"Probably because the head nurse spends half of her day working on a schedule that stays the same every week." Eric said.
"The APRN?"
"Because she's doing everything the head nurse should be doing on the floor plus her own work… and she's pregnant." Eric said. He then added, "Again."
"Your girlfriend is pregnant again?" The woman looked at David. "Is this number three?"
"Yep. We're trying to see how many we can pop out before we tie the knot." David said, expression serious. "Plus, neither of us have off enough time to plan a wedding let alone get engaged… That's a whole other story, though. She always knows when I'm going to propose so then I don't do it."
"Give her the damn ring, Thompson. My God." The woman scoffed. "If you've got enough time to make a baby, you've got enough time to propose."
Both Blaine and Kurt nodded.
"Just don't do it in the ER please." Eric said. "When is she due?"
"Early January." David said.
"How old is your oldest?"
"We're going for a trifecta. Three babies in three years." David said cheerfully. "Our other best friend's fiancé is expecting too."
"What, did you three plan it this way?" The tech laughed.
"Nope."
"Well, whether she's pregnant or not, I'm going to talk to the Chief of Staff about that. You don't have time to be dealing with student nurses and student doctors. That is not your job and it definitely isn't an APRN's job either."
"Good luck with that. Almost everything is my job down there." Eric sighed as the tech put some pictures up on three different television screens. He then immediately laughed, seeing one of the baby's had one hand over his eye and the other over his mouth. "I feel like that right now, buddy."
The woman rolled her eyes at him and then got up to shook Kurt and Blaine's hand. "I know that you know these two, but I'm Eric's boss. Well, one of his two bosses. I'm the chief of Pediatrics which means I get to hear his antics half of the hours he works."
"Oh, you'd be lost without me." Eric waved his hand in the air. He then said more seriously, "She's the one that taught me before she started making the big bucks."
Kurt gave a nervous smile as Blaine said hello.
Eric reached over, grabbing the printed copies of the pictures on the screen and looking at the typed measurements. He then looked at Quinn. "How are you feeling?"
"A lot of morning sickness and my back is sorer, but otherwise pretty close to my first pregnancy." She said.
"Is Baby…Uh…" Eric looked at the picture. "B moving a lot?"
"Well, he's always moved less than the lower one but they both seem pretty active." Quinn said.
"Neither of them are breech so that is one less thing to worry about." Eric's boss said, sounding relieved.
"Would you… what's going to happen?" Kurt asked. "Sorry. I know those questions are important too but we're worried. Can we get that part over before the small talk?"
"Honestly," Eric's boss said, looking at the pictures on the screen. "At this point this looks precautionary. The top baby is smaller but not dangerously so. We potentially have eight weeks, maybe nine until delivery? So even if the baby is smaller, it doesn't mean he won't continue to grow. The biggest thing that would worry me is if he quits growing but he looks pretty good."
"If they weren't twins it would be scarier but there's only so much room for two babies." Quinn's doctor added, pointing on the screen. "The internal organs are good. He hasn't stopped growing. It has slowed."
"Will he catch up?" Blaine asked hopefully—he wasn't sure if he could ask questions, but… he was going to anyway. There was a reason Quinn, Kurt, and he were there right?
"No, he probably won't catch up. It doesn't work that way except in really random circumstances… if it ever does?" Eric shook his head. "But the big thing I would have been worried about is the main organs. However, they look healthy even if they're a little smaller. Organs can get bigger out of the womb. The brain looks good, the hearts look good, the lungs have time to get there."
"Sometimes babies are also just born smaller." Eric's boss added.
"When we checked yesterday his head is actually so big that it brings up his overall percentile." The tech added.
"The most pressing issue here is how long they will be stay put before they truly run out of room." Eric's boss looked thoughtful. "There's still room now but the lower baby is a pretty decent size which can further inhibit the smaller one. We need him in there as long as possible so he can grow as much as possible. Once it gets to a certain point, it can be more dangerous for the smaller baby to be in the womb if he's not growing."
"What happens then?" Kurt's eyes widened.
"If the environment isn't conducive for growing or if he's not getting the right amount of nutrients and blood, he has a better chance outside of the womb in an incubator so we can provide the care he needs and hopefully get him where he needs to be." Eric's voice was gentle. "I'm not saying that will happen, either. That is the worry with this and twins, though. Room is already tight with multiples and if he quits growing and we don't get him out, he could be stillborn."
Blaine looked at David to gauge his reaction— because, let's be real. It was Blaine's baby and he didn't think David would be able to manager a doctor poker face when it came to Blaine's baby. They were brothers. They both and Wes were the literal definition of brothers from another mother.
David's expression did not change which eased Blaine's nerves. He felt even better when David made eye contact and gave a reassuring smile.
"But it looks like cord flow is good so the assumption is he'll keep growing. I still want you to come weekly, Quinn, and if anything shows up or if he doesn't progress, I want you to come biweekly and I want one of us three from the PEDS department there to make a judgement call on the biweekly visits if that happens… and as we get closer to the due date, one of us three should be here still even if it's weekly visits." Eric said and then looked at his boss.
"I agree with that." She nodded. "I don't know why you're looking at me, though. This is all you."
Eric shrugged and looked at another report that was in front of him. "I think we should definitely have an emergency plan in place—one for natural delivery and one for a c-section delivery. I already know who I want for the teams so we won't need to worry about that extra step. I have a feeling the birth will end up being induced… I'm hesitantly tempted to set a date for four weeks out and six weeks out to ensure I have the right people working when it happens just in case something goes wrong. If Baby B is still doing well four weeks from now, we should do it in six weeks. I'm not comfortable waiting until the end of October or the due date in early November. David, you should take baby A and I'll take the smaller one."
"I was hoping you'd say that honestly." David admitted.
"Teams?" Blaine asked.
"Generally, you've got your OB, a labor nurse, an OB tech, a pediatrician and a nursery nurse. It's high risk so we'll have specialized care for both twins which is basically more help. At the very least, each twin has its own full team. If there's a C-section you get more people but ideally, that won't happen." Eric said.
"Either way we'll have a neonatal resuscitation team on hand as well." Eric's boss added.
"They'll be born in an OR just in case." David added too.
"Even if it's not a c-section?" Quinn asked.
"Yes. Sometimes it can get a little rough, so you don't want to waste time getting to an OR if the baby or you are in distress." Eric told her. "It would still be a vaginal delivery if at all possible."
Quinn nodded, looking relieved.
"What if you two aren't working?" Kurt asked.
"We both live by the hospital. We'll get called in but, like I said, I'd like to preschedule this out and try to avoid that mayhem. The more we can control, the better equipped we are." Eric said. "We do this a lot with twins and high risk pregnancies and it works well. If something does happen and Quinn goes into labor when we aren't there, David and I will get there."
"What if she goes into labor and you're with somebody else?" Kurt asked.
"Labor usually isn't quick. If we can finish where we're at, we will. If not someone else will take over for us." David said. "It's happened many times."
"So, what happens on the day of?" Blaine asked.
"Simply put, the labor nurse coaches Quinn through everything and I deliver. They hospital will have their teams waiting for the babies." Quinn's doctor said. "If there is a c-section, I will be the one to do it. We'll be prepared if we need to and we'll have the extra staff on standby in case."
"What happens when the babies are born?" Quinn asked.
"That depends on how they're doing. Usually the nurse or your doctor will clean them off and then put them on you for skin to skin contact. Right then one of us two will do an Apgar assessment which is just checking the heart rate, breathing, muscle tone, reflexes, and if their coloring is okay." David said.
"Assuming the babies aren't in distress, we'll wait about a minute and let you two cut the cord and then we'll take them to where we've got our stuff set up to do a more thorough exam, warm them up, given them a bath, check vitals, and all of that good stuff. Kurt and Blaine can each be with one baby and your doctor will get you all squared away like with your first pregnancy." Eric said. "And we'll tell you what we're doing as we do it, too… and then hopefully you won't see me too much after a couple of hours because he's the one that usually does the follow ups."
"If they're under 18, I pretty much see them all if they're added upstairs." David nodded. "… and sometimes they come and see me."
"Some people like to have photographers or videographers in there. We'd really appreciate if you didn't." Eric said. "With it being high risk, the less people in the way, the easier it is. Have them come when you guys are in a room with them if you want but it's probably not a good idea in delivery. You can bring your own camera back, though… after that, they'll get a second check over for the same initial things, we'll record weight and measurements, make adorable baby hand and foot prints, give you all five ID bands, and then they're yours. Well, yours in a designated room. They'll get a couple of vaccines within 12 hours and regular check ups until you go home."
"And... if they are in distress?"
"Then we get them out of it and start the process a little later." Eric's boss said confidently. "We'll have a really good idea going in because of the frequent checks so we'll be prepared for anything… Wait a minute! Does that say Anderson-Hummel?!"
Blaine bit back a smile and covered his mouth with his hand
"Are you… No, you're too young…" She looked at Eric. "Is that…? What's his first name?"
"Kurt." Quinn's doctor looked confused.
"A celebrity is having a baby at Mount Sinai?!" she gasped, looking at Kurt and Blaine. She then said, "I didn't know you had curly hair."
Eric gave her a weird look.
"You're the Kurt Hummel…. Wait, Anderson-Hummel? Are you married?"
"Next week." Blaine got the most adorable grin on his face.
"Celebrity?" Quinn's doctor asked as Kurt covered his face.
"How did you not know that? The admitting people talk about it every time he comes in." The tech laughed. "Craig has been dying to say something to both of them for months."
"I thought they just really liked someone's clothes?" The doctor shrugged and looked at Kurt. "Do you need me to sign a privacy waiver or anything?"
"No but thank you." Kurt looked embarrassed.
He was quickly learning maybe he had liked his calm life more than he thought. At the same time, though, it was kind of cool.
"Okay, I want to block off time for a possible induction on September 27th and October 11th." Eric, who had pulled out his phone, said. "And check up appointments at the hospital those days just in case it happens. I do not feel comfortable going past October 25th which would be 2 weeks early… I don't think we'll make it that far, but if we do they'll be born that day."
"You're actually entering that?" Eric's boss asked.
"Oh yeah. I do it all of the time. Thinking ahead makes my day go smoother, which then makes his day go smoother." Eric said, pointing at David.
"I like it when I don't have surprises." David nodded, smiling brightly.
"Great, so… I feel comfortable with prescheduling those. If it doesn't happen, there'll still be plenty for people to do." Eric said.
"Uh, yeah. They can help me." David said.
Eric's boss—who by proxy would have also been David's— looked at him. "Do you not have enough help?"
"Chief, none of us have enough help. I've barely got enough rooms for the kids there now and we've got triplets being flown in this evening." David said. "Unless someone miraculously gets better, I have nowhere for them."
"Okay. I'll get with the ER chief about Eric actually doing half and half… and I'll also get you more space. I'm going to get on that right now before those triplets get here, actually." She turned to Kurt, Blaine, and Quinn. "It was good to meet you all but know the twins are in good hands."
"Thank you." Quinn smiled before the lady left.
"Guys from a doctor and friend standpoint… don't worry too much." Eric said. "We've taken care of cases a lot worse than this and if it stays at this rate, everything will be okay."
"Should we not leave for our honeymoon?" Blaine asked. "We can stay if we need to."
Kurt, who knew how excited Blaine was to see Harry Potter World (or something like that) smiled.
"No. Go." Quinn's doctor said. "We'll do next week's appointment on Friday. I'll be in for paperwork anyway. Are you three okay to do it in the morning?"
"That would be great." Kurt nodded.
Honestly, he would have loved to see his babies again before leaving for a week.
"I have an appointment but you five can stay in here as long as you want." Quinn's doctor said before exiting.
"I have to go to work." Quinn stood and hugged both Kurt and Blaine. "I feel a lot better now, though."
"Me too." Kurt nodded.
"It was nice to see you again." David waved at her.
"And it was nice to meet you." Eric smiled and waved as well.
Seconds after she left, Kurt looked down at a text.
He. Is. SO. CUTE.
And another, Don't tell Puck I said that.
Eric put all the pictures into a manila folder. "I know you two have been pretty stressed but give it four weeks. Two months is a lot of growing time for babies."
"Really?" Blaine looked hopeful.
"Oh yeah." Eric nodded.
"So… are you going to kind of keep up with it?" Kurt asked.
"Well she delivers there all of the time so I see her pretty often. We'll chat." Eric nodded. "David sees her more than I do where I'm in the ER a lot too, but Dr. Gaines usually likes to do this once a month so everyone's on the same page."
David's pager buzzed and he waved before leaving.
"Okay." Kurt nodded, still looking stressed out.
"She'll update me, though. And if I see anything that she doesn't when she shows me ultrasounds, I'll definitely say something but I don't really know a whole lot about a lot of the in utero stuff. Once they're out, though, I'm your guy. David's killing it too. I'll actually be really sad when he goes back to an office." Eric admitted. "As long as Marcy keeps getting pregnant, though, he'll need that extra money."
Blaine laughed loudly at that.
"Have you seen worst case scenario with this?" Kurt asked.
"You're going to worry yourself the more questions you ask." Eric said. "But yes. I have. The difference in size started a lot earlier than in Quinn's pregnancy and we had back up plans but unfortunately knew we probably wouldn't get to use it. Again, the smaller baby struggled from much earlier. Your doctor is super cautious but, honestly, I wouldn't have called a meeting like this if it were me—again, not an OBGYN. I just know ultrasounds I see and plan for and what the outcomes I have are. It's always good to be prepared, though. I don't think you have to worry, okay?"
Kurt nodded.
"Swing by tonight if you want to talk more, though. I can pull out some books and we can look." Eric smiled. "I'd spend more time getting excited about next weekend if I were you, though. It's all Alec is talking about. He's so excited."
"Me too." Blaine grinned, causing Kurt to smile too.
"I'll see you guys later." Eric waved and left the room.
"Home?" Blaine held out his hand.
"Yeah." Kurt smiled and took Blaine's hand in his own. "Home."
…
"Hey."
Blaine, who had just opened the front door the next night, pulled Adrian into a huge hug. Several seconds later, Adrian returned it.
"How are you?" Blaine pulled back, looking at him carefully.
"Uh, good. We were at Bob's. Arraignment is in the morning." Adrian's voice was quieter than usual.
"Hey, Matt." Blaine smiled and stepped aside to let them in.
They could see Kurt on the couch, mostly asleep as Project Runway was on the TV across the room. His tablet was nearly falling off of his lap as usual when Kurt fell asleep working.
Adrian looked around although he'd seen the inside of their house multiple times. He startled a bit when Matt put his hand on his lower back to guide him towards the love-seat.
"Oh!" Kurt sat up straight, yawning.
"Hi, Kurt." Adrian gave a (clearly forced) smile and waved.
"Hey." Kurt frowned, coming over.
"I'm fine." Adrian said, looking between Kurt and Blaine. "I just, uhm…"
"Don't worry about the wedding." Kurt's voice was soft. "It's okay."
Adrian took a deep breath, tears filling his eyes. He opened his mouth and closed it a few times.
"We were hoping it would be okay if we could come to the ceremony and not stay long after." Matt said.
"I just… I don't want to stand up there and ruin the pictures or give my speech." Adrian said, sniffling. "But I love you two and I really want to see you get married. Can I just… sit and watch like other guests?"
"That's fine!" Kurt said quickly. "But if it's too much…"
"It isn't. I just… don't want to be in front of a bunch of people right now." Adrian sighed. "I don't really want to be around anyone right now honestly. I mean… you know what I mean. Maybe?"
Blaine nodded, frowning.
"I want to support you two." Adrian said. "And I love you guys. I want to see you two get married. Blaine, you're one of my best friends and I love you to death, Kurt."
"We love you too." Kurt said. "Look… if you want to come but not stand up and give a speech, that's fine. But if you'd rather not go, we understand."
"I want to come." Adrian nodded and then added, "I need to come. I'll be there."
Kurt smiled and nodded.
"Can I use the restroom?" Adrian asked.
"Of course." Blaine nodded.
Matt waited until the bathroom door closed before sighing.
"You two don't have to come." Blaine said, looking at him. "Seriously."
"He really wants to. I told him it wasn't a good idea." Matt admitted.
"Is he okay?" Kurt asked.
"He's not sleeping much but his doctor gave him some medicine to help this morning." Matt shrugged. "He's obviously upset but my whole family is law enforcement, so my parent's house is the perfect place for him right now."
"Do Adrian's parents know?" Blaine asked.
"No. His twin sister does, though. She may come see us the weekend after next… I've never met her before but Adrian seemed better after talking to her. Uh… video chatting and signing with her, I guess?" Matt bit his lip.
"He's taking some time off work, isn't he?"
"Not officially but Bob and Ryan told him he should at least take a couple of weeks. My brothers are going to come and pack up some of the stuff in the apartment because Adrian won't step foot inside it." Matt hesitated. "He hasn't even told AJ yet. I guess she's pregnant and freaking out? And honestly, you and she are usually the ones I go to, Blaine. I don't really know what I'm doing or what I'm supposed to do."
"Give him a couple more days." Blaine said gently. "But AJ needs to know. She helped him through it last time and she would want to be there now."
"Yeah." Matt sighed.
"You two can stay here tonight if you want." Kurt said. "We still have the extra bed set up in the guest room."
"He wants to go back to Cambridge, but thanks." Matt forced a smile. "He feels safer, there… I can't believe this happened the one time I am gone overnight since we've lived here."
"Do the police know how he found him?"
"Yeah. His dad gave him the address. I have never wanted to beat up a person so much in my life." Matt took a deep breath when they heard water running from the other side of the apartment.
Blaine stared at Matt, eyes wide.
"Listen." Kurt said. "If the wedding is too much, please don't push it. We want you two there but Adrian's mental health comes first."
"We will be there." Matt promised. "He's made up his mind so he won't change it… We probably won't stay too long after the ceremony, though."
"That's fine." Kurt nodded.
"His dad?" Blaine whispered.
Matt nodded as Adrian came back into the room. "You ready to head back to Cambridge?"
"Yeah, I guess." Adrian nodded, pulling his sweater around him tighter. "Sorry your numbers won't be even up there."
"Don't." Blaine shook his head, going to hug him.
Adrian hugged him back and forced a smile when he pulled away. "I guess I'll see you guys next Saturday when you get married?"
"God. Next Saturday. It's eight days away." Kurt said.
"They go by quick." Adrian gave another smile and then hugged Kurt. "Don't stress too much, okay?"
"Get some sleep." Kurt hugged him back. "You look exhausted."
"It's kind of weird how we were talking about everything a couple of weeks ago, isn't it?" Adrian sighed. "Think I jinxed it?"
"No." Kurt's voice was soft.
"C'mon." Matt said, coming over and putting his hand on Adrian's lower back. "We'll see you two next Saturday, okay?"
"If you come early enough, come get breakfast with us." Blaine said. "Me, Kurt, Wes, David, and his brother Finn."
"We'll try but I don't think we'll be early." Matt said, forcing a smile. "You all have a good night."
"You too." They said together.
Blaine locked the front door behind them and looked at Kurt.
"Bob's going to get this guy, right?" Kurt asked after several seconds.
"He said he was going to 'nail him like Jesus on the cross.'" Blaine nodded. "So, yes. He takes all the rape cases to heart and he personally knows Adrian so he's more pissed about it than usual. He was on the phone all day with police departments in all four states the PPO is under, getting records and files sent over."
"Won't the guy say it was consensual like before?"
"Before it wasn't on tape with audio." Blaine frowned.
"Bob watched it?"
"I'm assuming he did since arraignment is tomorrow. If this douche sends this to trial and doesn't plead guilty, he'll wish he had." Blaine sighed.
"Do you… watch those?"
"I haven't had a client that had a rape on video, so no. If I ever do, I'll have to watch it."
"He watched the whole thing, start to finish?" Kurt's eyes were wide.
"Yeah. If it goes to court, they may show it too." Blaine nodded. "We should try to get some sleep, though. We're watching Ollie in the morning. Remember?"
"How do you just… talk about that and turn it off?" Kurt asked.
"Because we have to, I guess." Blaine shrugged.
Kurt frowned and nodded. "I love you, Blaine."
"I love you too, Kurt."
