Chapter 35: Baking Cookies
(Friday – Saena's apartment)
Kyoko woke up early, and started preparing breakfast for herself and her mother … she let her mother rest as much as needed, hoping she will recover soon
Around 30 minutes later, Saena woke up and joined Kyoko for breakfast
Kyoko: Good morning
Saena: Good morning
Kyoko smiled and said: have a seat, breakfast is ready!
Saena nodded and sat down, she then said: Thank you, as always
Looking at her mother who hasn't touched her food yet, Kyoko became a little worried, so she asked: um … are you … ok?
Saena: I'm fine … don't worry too much!
Kyoko: your hand, is it hurting?
Saena: not much, … I have some medicine and will be taking it after breakfast
Kyoko: ok … I remember when I broke my leg, it took a while to get the cast off … I know how uncomfortable it can be

Kyoko: I understand … I was too caught up with my mission to take Ruriko's role away, that I risked a lot on it … but I'm glad I didn't get the role! … I don't like being toyed with at all!
Saena: toyed with?
Kyoko: Well, at that time, … we didn't get along, Tsuraga-san and I …
Saena nodded and said: you two came a long way … that's good, he's a good person
Kyoko smiled and nodded, then said: shall we eat?
Saena nodded and started eating silently
Kyoko: you're not going to work, right?
Saena: I won't … I need to figure out how to get around without using my left arm

Kyoko: yeah, people should work hard for what they want … cheating is never the answer!
Saena: people cheat in everything they can! … sometimes it works, while other times it could cause disasters
Kyoko: how?!
Saena: well, I'm not sure you heard about the building that collapsed nearly two years ago
Kyoko: oh, it was around the time I arrived in Tokyo, … I saw it on the news!
Saena: apparently, the person who built the building cheated on the inspections, and wasn't using trustworthy material, so when the building collapsed, he tried to run away, because he knew once they investigate they will know that he cut corners to build the building within the deadline he was given, instead of extending it … around 12 people died, and that's all on him
Kyoko: how did he manage to cut those corners?!
Saena: he bribed some people, … just like with your case, people think bribing will get them out of trouble, … but, it's a crime, to begin with
Kyoko: ah! … that's terrible!
Saena nodded: yes … Tokyo isn't as magical as they claim it to be … it's full of terrible people, so be careful out there!
Kyoko: I will!
They finished eating and Kyoko insisted on cleaning up on her own, reminding her mother to take her pills instead
When Kyoko finished, she went to get changed
Saena sat down on the couch and looked at the TV, thinking (what am I going to do today?)
Kyoko left the bedroom, ready for work … she sat down to put her shoes on, and said: I'm sorry I didn't bring Remi … Tsuraga-san was busy and I didn't want to bother him … I know you're fine, but I hope you're not lonely!

She open the TV … she switched channels, not finding something interesting enough … but then a channel caught her attention … it was the cooking channel, as the guest chef announced she was making her famous Chocolate chip cookies
Saena put the remote control down and watched, thinking (maybe this will give me a clue)
After watching for some time, the guest chef started shaping her cookies and said: it's important to put all your effort and love in the cookies … because you want people to feel all your love and efforts when eating it … baking your cookies with love will give you the best result
Saena was perplexed … she thought (those foreigners always talk about love, … does love actually have a meaning to them?! … love this and love that … love is too overused!)
Tired of hearing about loving everything … she attempted to change the channel, but then the guest chef said: now we bake the cookies for around 12- 14 minutes … we want them to be golden brown, which is just perfect
** The show **
The host: oh, … sometime I undercook my cookies, … it turns out gooey and unappetizing, how can we avoid that
The guest chef: the timing has to be perfect, you have to watch them thoroughly so they don't undercook … but also don't leave them in there for too long, because they can burn
The host: I see, so went my timer goes off, I check on them, instead of taking them out right away!
Guest chef: exactly … you know, baking cookies reminds me of many things in life, … including my love life!
The host was surprised, so she asked: how so?!
Guest chef: you know, I didn't find my husband right away, I went through many trials of love affairs … I dated older guys … one younger man … a divorcé … even a virgin!
The host: wow! … impressive! … you had quite the experience! Bahahaha

She stopped at a show, where a guy gave some girl a flower he picked from the garden, the girl was overjoyed and she ran to her friend to boost about that
Her friend called the guy cheap for not getting her a bouquet from a flower shop instead
The girl however insisted that the amount of flower or price didn't matter because the thought is what counts … the guy gave her a pink flower, which was her favorite color, and although it wasn't wrapped nicely, she got the message … he liked her and he was thoughtful enough to pick a color she liked
Saena turned off the TV and thought (This isn't good!)
She got up and went to the kitchen where she saw that Kyoko put her flowers in different vases … she gave them water and put them in neatly
Saena sighed and remembered
** Memory**
After Takarada left her hospital room, she sat alone for a little while until Todoh came back
Todoh came in with a small bouquet of yellowish-white and whitish-purple Irises … he looked at her awkwardly and said: I know it's late … but here
Saena looked at him with a puzzled expression … she looked down, and said: you didn't have to
Todoh looked away and said: I want to …
Saena froze in her place … not knowing what to say … or do
Todoh put them on the side table, and spotted a new bouquet, … he looked at it and was a little confused
Saena: Kyoko's boss came … he bought them
Todoh: I see … everything alright?
Saena: yeah … he said a few things that puzzled me, but … everything is fine otherwise
Todoh: like?
Saena: I'd rather just put that aside … I don't want to think about it
Todoh: as you like …
Saena: thank you …
Todoh looked at her and asked: for?
Saena: the flowers … and everything else … "thank you" isn't sufficient enough to show how much gratitude … (she paused to avoid saying something that could be misleading) so she just said: I'm grateful … for everything
Todoh smiled and said: no problem … don't mention it!
Saena felt guilty … he was very thoughtful and she couldn't bring herself to express how grateful she felt
Todoh: do you have a favorite, flower?
Saena: not really, … I never really thought about it!
Todoh nodded and said: I see
They sat in silence for a few moments … it became really awkward, until the nurse came in to give her dinner, and chatted about the police coming … that broke the awkward atmosphere between them and opened a line of discussion, where Saena could ask about the specifies, and Todoh was able to tell her about his whole plan in full detail

She sighed heavily thinking about the shows, Takarada's cookie analogy, and the flowers
She gave up and went to bed to rest
(In Kyoto)
Satoshi arrived at his parents' home, and pet the cats who greeted him on the way to his father's office
He said: excuse my intrusion!
Happy, Midori said: you're back! … how are you?!
Satoshi: I'm good!
Midori: did you bring Susumu with you?!
Satoshi: he refused to come, … he's still busy with work
Midori: he hasn't come since last year! … is he some slave to work for all this time?!
Akira: let him … he's stubborn and a workaholic!
Midori: No! … That's why you collapsed! … I don't want my son to collapse too, he's still young!
Akira: what is he doing, is work really keeping him busy?!

Akira: Oh, … he did something bad?
Satoshi: He was involved with Okabe trying to cover his daughter's crime, with money!
Akira: what a Fool!
Satoshi: tell me about it! … I was enjoying myself while arresting him!
Midori: how is he … Susumu?

Sho went inside and slammed the door shut, leaving the girl alone … with the old man
Kyoko: hey … ummm … excuse me! … you shouldn't be sleeping here! … if you need to rest, you can come to the ryokan to get a room!
The man didn't move at all and Kyoko felt a little unsure … she went around to look at the man closely and saw blood … so she said: blood! … he's bleeding … he's not asleep, is he!? … I need help Sho-chan!
However, she was ignored
Yayoi's voice was heard saying: what are you doing? … video games again?! … Where is Kyoko-chan?!
Kyoko said: You can't sleep here mister … you need to get up to get help … someone might hit you on the road!

Satoshi: who's this?
Midori: If I remember correctly, her name was Mogami Kyoko, … her mother was in Tokyo at the time, so we waited to hear from the Ryokan owners when she returns, but they never contacted us
Akira: has it been 10 years since?!
Satoshi smiled and thought (That's her as a child?! … she grew up wonderfully!)
Midori: She's such a sweet and good-hearted girl … and silly too!
Akira: Yes, I was told that she picked up all the fruits while the adults called for help … she got two bags, one for the fruits that were still good, and the other for the spoiled ones
Satoshi: how thoughtful!

Midori gave up, saying: you're right … she's probably with someone new already, we shouldn't interfere just because her child helped us once … oh well …
Akira: keep an open mind, but, if he doesn't bring a bride by the time he's 50, he'd be a lost cause! … we will just arrange something then!
Satoshi: more like he's married to his job!
Midori: I don't like that … he's not going to work forever, at some point you need to retire … what is he going to do then!?
Akira: I have no idea … I just don't want to push him further away … he already lives far away and rarely calls or visits

Midori got up and said: are you eating dinner with us?!
Satoshi: sure! … I'll bring the family too

Satoshi: he deserves it … you spoiled him way too much, mom!
Akira: let's not make decisions when he's not here … we will discuss the matter when he comes home!
Satoshi laughed and said: I hope so … he'll probably take the first train back if you start talking about marriage and adoption! … anyway, I'm heading out, … I'll be back for dinner!
Midori: alright … take care!
Akira: that Todoh is a puzzle, I can't solve!
Midori: he takes after you
Akira: I'm no pervert!
Midori: not that … your both complicated thinkers who keep to themselves and like to be alone … he just takes the alone part way more seriously
Akira: I'm different, I'm married with 3 adult children!
Midori: sighed then said: never mind … I'll go cook … I will pray at new Year that Todoh will finally leave the single life behind!
Akira: maybe he's having too much fun!

(At Saena's Apartment)
Saena woke up a few hours later … she sat down and had lunch, which Kyoko cooked and put aside for her … then sat and tried to use her laptop once more … typing was tedious, and she got tired way too soon
She got up and sat down in the living room alone … then got up and looked out the window, to see that it started raining … she felt lonely and depressed … and the weather wasn't helping
She stared out the window while thinking about many things …she then looked at the time and saw that its 4 pm … so she sat down and took out some of her papers to work on them … if she couldn't type, she could still read
She spent nearly 2 hours in the same spot … going from one document to another, … taking a water break in between … by the time it was 6 pm … she thought about something and rushed out the door without thinking too much
She took a Taxi and asked them to take her to her desired destination
In the car, she thought her plan over and decided to not go through with it, so she told the Taxi driver to turn around
The taxi driver complained: we just arrived!
Saena looked outside and contemplated her plan once more … she thanked the Taxi driver, paid him, then exited the car … she walked a little under the rain while trying to keep her cast covered with her clothes as much as possible
She arrived, and went into the building, … the security guy recognized her, so he didn't question her, and let her in … a woman came after her and walked by her, clicking the elevator button up
They both entered the elevator … and the woman asks: which floor?
Saena looked at her but said nothing … she clicked the 4th floor and stood in the corner silently
The women looked at Saena and thought (is she new here?! … I hate it, when new women move here … more women mean more competition over the bachelors!)
Both women stood in the elevator silently … as it went up … it stopped at the second floor, but the person was aiming to go down, so he skipped the ride … the elevator stopped at the 3rd floor as well … The women were becoming impatient, so she asked: new here?
A nervous Saena looked at her thinking (why can't she mind her own business … I can't do this … I need to leave)
But by then, the elevator reached the 4th floor and both women exited … the women walked away first, feeling annoyed that Saena was ignoring her … she reached her mother's place and rung the doorbell
She looked at Saena as she walked by … and stopped at apartment number 48 … she stood there without knocking
The woman wondered: she knows Todoh-san?! … why!? … is she a friend? … she soaked and injured … is she some client?!
Saena looked down rethinking her reasonings … she tried to talk herself out of it, but … she knocked on the door and prayed no one would answer
However, Todoh was home, he said: give me a minute … (he walked to the door and opened it to see his unexpected guest)
Todoh: oh … hey!
Saena kept her eyes on the floor unsure what to say … she stayed silent rethinking everything
Todoh noticed that her clothes were soaked … he worried: were you out in the rain?!
She didn't respond and instead stayed silent … her mind was somewhere else, remembering things that were said to her … she wanted to withdraw, leave, but her body won't listen
Todoh: Mogami? … are you ok?! … do you want to come in?!
The women stared at the two … Todoh seemed to know her, which made her feel very jealous … Todoh never paid attention to her when she came over to visit her mother
(so why this woman?!) she thought
Saena looked up for the first time … she saw that he had just taken a shower, as his hair was still damp and messy, but he was dressed as if he was going somewhere, … so she said: I'm sorry, I should go
Todoh: wait! … I was going to come over, … but, if you want to talk here, we can!
Saena thought about it … her mind was telling her to go home at once … her heart was telling her to stay … with her mind and heart at odds … she stayed silent trying to make up her mind
Worried, Todoh made the decision himself and said: come in, to at least get dried, … I don't want you getting sick, … I will drive you home
However, Saena hesitated … she knew that she's couldn't back out if she was to enter his place
Todoh looked around, ignoring the woman who stared at them … he took Saena's hand and pulled her in gently, closing the door behind them
The woman was annoyed, … she thought (Is she important to him? … is that why he keeps ignoring all my attempts to ask him out?)
Saena didn't resist … she got in and took off her shoes … then stood in the middle of his place
Todoh wasn't sure what was going on with her, but he thought that she should dry herself so she doesn't get sick … he said: wait here …. (he went to his bedroom and took out a clean towel, then went out and handed it to her)
However, Saena didn't reach out to take it … she just stood there … unsure of herself and why she even came
Todoh open the towel and draped it over her shoulders … saying: you shouldn't get wet … especially not your cast!
Saena looked down with the last attempt to convince herself to leave
Worried, Todoh pleaded: Mogami … are you ok … talk to me!
Saena finally spoke up, saying: I hate you!
Todoh was taken aback by that for a second, but didn't question her … he knew she says that sometimes, and he didn't let that hurt him
Saena: I hate how you make me feel … vulnerable …
Todoh apologized: I'm sorry … that wasn't my intention
Frustrated, Saena said: I hate it … all of it! … the different and conflicting messages … I don't know who to listen to anymore … but it's always you … I always think of you first!
Todoh: Mogami … I … I shouldn't have said what I …
Saena: No! … what has been said is said and done, … no take backs! … you can't take it back … I can't take this back either … I hate all of this!
Todoh stood there quietly … unsure what to say
Saena: I'm conflicted … do I listen to my head, with reason, with pride … with knowledge and my memories that warn me from the unknown … or do I listen to the voice within me that is telling me to do what I want! … what I need … what I desire!
Todoh: you should listen to whatever makes you happy, Mogami!
Doubtful, Saena: what if it's neither! … I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel anymore, … I'm lost in the dark, with no way out!
Todoh: Mogami! … calm down, and tell me what happened? … what's wrong?!
Saena: I can't do this anymore … (she whispered) saying: I can't keep lying to myself!
Now, Todoh was getting frustrated, he wanted to help her but didn't know how … he didn't know why she suddenly came, but he was glad she didn't go to anyone else
Saena dropped her head in despair
Todoh asked: are you feeling sick, … look at me! … tell me what happened!
Saena looked at him, staring straight at him … one voice was telling her something while the other voice was telling her another … she was conflicted, and her eyes spoke volumes
Todoh wanted to hug her or comfort her, but he didn't dare put his hands on her without her permission … the last thing he wanted was to be pushed away and lose all her trust
Saena dropped her head once more, which confused Todoh even more … he thought (is she breaking down … did she get some email from someone … is it work … are they investigating her … did something happen after I left work?)
But before Todoh can voice any of those questions, Saena looked up once more before she grabbed his collar, … leaned in, and kissed him, giving in to her desires and listening to the one voice that spoke the loudest, her heart
Saena pulled away and looked down, almost regretting her actions … she wanted to apologize … she looked down in shame and tried to speak, but nothing was said
Confused but intrigued, Todoh called: Mogami?
Saena looked up and into his eyes with fear and a hint of shame
Todoh stared back at her … his eyes searched hers for answers … he wanted to know if this was reality or just a dream … because it was unreal, what just happened
Saena finally spoke, but she didn't apologize … she explained: I don't know how to deal with those emotions anymore … and I don't know how to thank you for everything you've done so far
Slightly disappointed, Todoh said: you don't have to do anything to thank me, just saying it is enough for me … I don't want you to push yourself to do something you don't want!
Saena looked down trying to collect herself
Todoh: Mogami … I shouldn't have confessed, I'm sorry … I
Saena: No … if you haven't confessed then I would be playing cat and mouse until the very end! … I don't want that … I prefer honesty, and you know that!
Puzzled, Todoh asked: cat and mouse?!
Saena: I prefer when people tell me the truth … stop playing around with words … giving me ideas and then shut me down … I understand why you do it … I get why you don't want to tell me and I'm thankful … but I'm also upset! … because you not telling me means you're not being honest, … or that I won't get it or admit to it if you don't spill it out loud and clear!
Todoh: I wasn't trying to play with you … I know you know that, but … I didn't want you to feel like you need to respond to my feelings … I didn't want to put that type of pressure on you!
Saena nodded then said: I admit, you telling me how you felt forced me into a corner, … but not in a bad way … I was running away from it, I knew it deep down, that something has to be there for you to care so much for so little payback… you refused to be paid for your service, and you helped us … me … much more then you think you did …
Todoh: Mogami … I …
Saena: let me finish … please … because if you say something, it might stop me from saying anything further … so please … let me say this

The camera changes angles and it zoomed into different messages
Message: The fans are attacking me because I posted a picture of myself next to Koga-san!
Message: I don't think I can continue being an actress with all this hate and constant attacks on my physical image … sure I gained weight, but it was for a role in a drama! … I'm doing this under careful supervision, but people take it way too far with the shaming!
Message: I broke up with my girlfriend because my fans didn't approve of her … they bullied her so much that she couldn't take it anymore … my heart is broken!
Message: people are jealous of my success and that I filmed a movie alongside a famous celebrity! … they make me feel like I don't have the right to be around their favorite celebrities, … but how am I supposed to do my job?!
Message: I was harassed by people for my photoshoots … I don't make the rules, I only follow the instructions on the contracts I signed!
The camera zoomed in until the screen became all-white … then, a few internets and social media posts started raining down

Koga followed, saying: We have feelings and we have different types … I might like someone, but you might not like them … I'm grateful for my fans who support me, but, sometimes people take it way too far! … I would like to ask you to respect us, our interests and desires! (he also walked away following Ren)
Hikari (A famous singer) followed: I appreciate the people who like my voice, but to the people who don't like it, … just switch channels or something … I'm not forcing you to listen to me, but please be respectful! … because I'm going to keep making music for my fans!
Kana walked behind her, saying: We often need to keep the people we love a secret, and need to change our names to protect the people we love … we have a life, and not everything in our life should be public! … please respect our privacy!

The camera switches scenes to a room, … it had customs, make up and filming equipment's … the camera zoomed out to show all the idols together standing united

Koga then said: We in Showbiz want to keep doing the job we love … to entertain our fans and put a smile on your faces … but we also want to live our lives freely … Personally, I think the real fans are those who support no matter what they do or meet or love … unless they are doing something clearly wrong …
Kana spoke after him, saying: We might do things you dislike, but they make us happy … our feelings are as valuable as your … our opinions matter just as much as yours … so, let's make this a safe space for everyone

The video ended with pictures of behind the scenes, of people laughing together having a good time, whole others held hands with people they loved and cared about …. Finally, the screen went black and the logo of the campaign appeared … under it was the logos of the agencies that are participating in the campaign with a message saying join us!

Kyoko was deeply touched by the message, … and felt very grateful to Ren, because she knew that he was the one who came up with the idea … now his campaign was finally in motion
Saena noticed how happy Kyoko was after the campaign video ended … she thought (this might be very beneficial for them in the future)
Saena got up and excused herself to change and get ready for bed
At this time, Kyoko texted Ren and thanked him for his work on the campaign
He texted back: It's finally out?!

Kyoko finally texted, Good night … (then closed her phone … and smiled happily)
Her happiness halted when she heard a loud bumping sound … then a thud
She ran into the bedroom to see her mother on the floor holding her broken arm in pain, so she asked: what happened, are you ok?!
Saena didn't answer, because she was embarrassed … she was so dazed with her thoughts about dating Todoh, and the kisses they shared at his place … that she bumped her broken arm on the door frame on the way out to call Kyoko for bed
