Chapter 36: Confessions
(Saturday– Press conference)
Early in the morning, a press conference was organized by the police and the media to report on the developments in Kyoko's case
The Chief police stood in front of the cameras and bowed apologetically
The media started taking pictures, while others video tapped or live streamed the whole thing … in the same reporters stood by and waited for their chance to ask questions
The police chief then approached the stand, and started by saying: I would like to apologize to everyone who has been affected by the unfair investigations that were completed by a couple of people within the police force … we have been working behind the scenes to bring down the people who abused the powers granted to them … they choose to follow their desires, instead of enforcing the law, and their actions affected many lives … I'm very sorry (he bowed down again)
A lot of people and reporters where confused by that statement … but they knew to wait for an explanation, before throwing their questions around
The police chief stood back up and said: We will be revealing more information in that regard very soon, as we will be reopening investigations in all the cases those shady detectives handled, to ensure that no one innocent is being punished for something they have never committed
He opened a file that was in front of him, and said: Today, we have an update of the case of Kyoko, from LME … Mogami Kyoko-san
Reporters looked at each other, then opened their notepad to write down their notes, while their camera crew filmed and took pictures
The police chief: We have been investigating this case for a while, and during that time, a new investigation was opened because there was a sudden change to who was handling the case
He continued: Luckily, this case helped us unfold the big schemes going behind the scenes, and we were able to bring down all the people who tried to cover up this crime
One reporter couldn't help himself, so he yelled asking: What do you mean by a cover up?!
The police chief: patience, please … I will explain momentarily (he flipped a few pages) then started talking again, saying: The main assigned detective in this case was replaced by another detective a few weeks after being handed the case … The new detective had disregarded the reports and statement given to him, and was doing his investigation in his own way, ignoring all the rules and protocols we abide to, as members of the police force
He looked and said regretfully: That's where the cover up started
Everyone was surprised, yet equally outraged … some were thinking "Is it safe to trust the police" … "Are they sure they got rid of all the rotten apples?!" … "who ordered this cover-up?!"
The police chief: I understand your concern, there has been reports about wrongdoing, and it took time to collect all testimonies, as dirty people usually resort to do dirty tricks to cover their tracks, they got away with it for a while, but we are committed to uncovering all those actions, and cleaning our forces from the people who abused their powers … we are going to ensure that the law will be served to those who broke it, no matter who they are!
An eager reporter asked: what's the cover-up about?!
The police chief smiled stiffly, then said: I will start with what the new detective of the case has done … former detective, Okabe-san accepted money as a bribe, to ensure that the real culprit behind Mogami Kyoko's poisoning will remain in the shadows, the person who switched the detectives also received a bribe to ensure Okabe takes the case and deals with it accordingly
He continued: Instead of looking for the person involved, they decided to choose a scapegoat to take the fall for what happened
Everyone was shocked … they looked at each other, some in disbelief that things like this actually happen, as some thought that those types of things only happen in dramas
The police chief: They senselessly listened to the people providing the money, and let them choose the scapegoat, allowing them to also forge evidence to ensure the success of their scheme … little did they know that we were following them every step of the way, while simultaneously, investigating the same case to ensure the real culprit is caught in the end
He took out a picture of the note, and said: This is the fake evidence they tried to use
One reporter shouted: wait! … are you saying the scapegoat they tried to use was the victim, herself?!
The police chief confirmed: Yes … they tried to point the finger at the victim, using the situation that was unfolded in the news, trying to make the victim into someone who was solely seeking attention, no matter who they hurt, even including themselves …
He sighed, before continuing: They thought they could get away with this, but we caught them red handed, and through their actions, we were able to find the real culprit behind that incident
Reporters were more then intrigued to hear the story, as something like this is huge, as would garner lots of attention from the public
The police chief: The story is as follows … Person A, posted something online, which upset person C. Person C offered to help person A, as they are a follower of Person A in a specific website… Person B supplied some basic information to person C, who took the information, and used it to devise their horrible plan
He continued: Person C ordered the chocolates from their favorite store, and got the poison, … then ordered their private chef to remake 12 of the 24 chocolates in the box, inserting the poison in them. They then sent the chocolates to our victim, Mogami Kyoko, disguised to be a gift from the staff.
The police chief picked up a picture of the notes Kyoko received with the chocolates, then said: This is the notes she received … they were hoping that Kyoko would eat the chocolates and die, which will ultimately force the studio to find another actress for the role, in that case, they wouldn't do another audition, but they would seek the actress who came in second
A reporter: Who is that person… I mean actress!?
The police chief: in this case, it's Person A, with person B being their manger … we won't be releasing their names, as we are still looking into this matter further … they have yet to receive charges, therefore this matter will be dealt with privately until further notice
He continued: We learned that Kyoko-san asked some of her coworkers if they got chocolates too, as it was a surprise to get them, she confirmed that two of her coworkers got chocolates on a different day, and so she assumed hers just came late, … but we verified that the type and the method they got their chocolates were different
He took out a picture of a half-eaten chocolate piece then said: Kyoko-san went on her way to meet her mother about person A previous actions towards her and was seeking legal advice on the matter, … As Kyoko was unaware of the plan against her, she ate, and shared her chocolate with a co-worker, and manger … all three of them ate the safe ones at the time, thankfully
When she arrived at her mother's office, she quickly took another piece and left the rest in the car … as she waited to meet her mother she ate the other half of this chocolate piece… and collapsed shortly after … she was found by her mother and her co-worker, who performed CPR until help could arrive … The police took this chocolate piece, as well as the box, … the lead detective talked to everyone, including her mother, her co-workers, staff, manger, and anyone they can think off … they also perused person A, who seemed to have left the country a few days prior … However, short after, the lead detective was removed and replaced by Okabe-san, who also received a bribe a few days later, including the forged evidence
He continued: Luckily for us, they weren't careful with covering their tracks, and they made a few mistakes along the way, including spending the money they received as a bribe … We followed the evidence and money trail, which lead us to the cover-up that was ordered, and who was behind it all!
The police chief took out a picture of the car, and said: this car is the one that delivered the money, and as you may notice, not everyone can afford such car … this car led us to trace the money, as It was wired from one account to another … we also found the chef who made the chocolate, learning he got fired days after the incident
He continued: After reviewing all the evidence, the motive, and alibies, we concluded that Tanaka Hitomi-san was the mastermind behind this crime … In this case, she is person C!
People and reporters looked around, as they did hear about her arrest … some reporters have reported on it, in front of her school, but now they know why she got arrested
The police chief: We also arrested her father, politician Tanaka-san, who learned about his daughters' action, but instead of doing the right thing and reporting it, he tried to cover it up, by turning the victim into the scapegoat for his daughter's sake… he also forged evidence and paid a number of people some bribes to do the job he requested
One reporter who used to support Tanaka's political work, said in disgust: He claimed to be the politician to ensure that Justice is his number one concern, yet he tried to cover up a crime and blamed the victim?! … what a fraud!
The police chief finished his main talking points, mentioning they tried to arrest Kyoko while she was staying with her injured mother in the hospital, and the was Okabe's plan to catch his victim when they were most vulnerable, assuming people around her won't focus on her because her mother was hurt. He did mention that Okabe failed to get an arrest warrant, but tried to arrest Kyoko regardless
At this point, reporters were officially allowed to ask their questions, and they insisted on knowing who person A and B were, and why Kyoko was meeting her mother regarding person A
The police chief explained that person's A and B tried to hurt/kill Kyoko previously, on the day she won the audition, as they tried to throw her off the 3rd floor
People were outraged and demanded to know those people are, but the police chief remind firm on not disclosing the names until charges are delivered
The police chief also mentioned that person A is under investigation for multiple crimes/incidents, and he couldn't release anything until they get the findings they are after.
People were still unaware who came second, so no one really figure out Kimiko's name
More reporters asked their questions, and most of the matter were cleared to the public … The police chief tried to assure the public that the rotten apples were all removed and that they won't get away with their actions, and that more news was to come in the future.
(In the Grand-Jewel Hotel)
Kioshi and Anna watched the news conferences and finally understood what they witnessed in the hospital
Anna: I'm glad they found the person behind this, and bought all the bad people down with them!
Kioshi: yeah … Although I wish she didn't have to suffer so much! … being blamed for something she was the victim off!
Anna: At least her case helped catch those shady people, and that might bring more of their wrong doings and help others!
Kioshi: what were the police doing all this time?! … why did it have to be her case?
Anna reasoned: because of the cover-up, possibly?! … they can assume as much as they want to, but when something is as clear as bribes being sent, they can easily get a good start to bring the bad people down
Kioshi: true!
Anna: what worries me more, is that Mogami-san was in the hospital
Kioshi: that was all my mother doing, wasn't it?!
Anna: I can't say that's true … maybe the news got to her, but I heard that on Tuesday, a Drunk driver caused the accident … I didn't see any pictures, so I don't know, but I heard that at least 16 cars were involved
Kioshi: A drunk driver?! … what the hell is a guy doing in a car after drinking … he's not supposed to be driving! … how did the Bar allow him to leave with his car keys!
Anna: He could have been drinking alcohol at home for all you know
Kioshi: I really hope she's ok … I don't want that girl to lose her mother … they shouldn't suffer anymore!
Anna: with the news that came out on Tuesday, I could understand how that would affect her mentally … she could totally lose her job!
Kioshi: I'm going to have a word with my mother!
Anna: I don't know how effective that would be!
Kioshi: she could've gotten Mogami-san fired again … and … she might have died
Anna: why would you think she would care exactly?! … if Mogami-san is no longer in the picture, don't you think that would make her feel overjoyed … since Kyoko would lose her one and only parental figure … and the custody could go to you since she's still a minor!
Kioshi: your right … she would be happy if Mogami lost her job, so she won't be able to provide for them … and if she had died, then she would fight for custody and could get it easily!
Anna: It terrible to assume that, I know … but that's how she made us feel, and think … since she doesn't care about anything but her!
Kioshi: I might actually have to tell my dad about this
Anna: I think you should … the sooner the better!
Kioshi: should I call him now?

He opened his phone, connected it to the TV and called his father, while he sat down on his knees

Yashiro: don't thank me … Ren was been on the president's tail throughout the process, the only thing he didn't get was the release timing … but I think it worked out now, especially since soon you two will have to go for the movie premier and will be missing for around 2 weeks

All through the weekend, people got warnings, and had to agree to the new rules social media websites instated … forcing people to read them before agreeing
Kyoko spent the rest of her Saturday at work … she finished around 10:30 pm, and went home
She noticed her mother was a little disoriented, and wondered if her work was ok, but her mother told her she had nothing to worry about
Sunday went by peacefully … Kyoko had a full day to relax, play with Remi and help her mother navigate through with her broken arm
She did all the cooking, which didn't mind at all … she also helped her mother wash her back, as Saena had to keep her cast covered
Kyoko went to bed early, so she could go to work on time, then resume work with the "Lotus in the Mud" on Tuesday
(Next Week)
On Tuesday, Kyoko went to "Lotus in the Mud" Set, and personally apologized to Kurusaki, director Morizumi, her co-workers and staff … but they all brushed it off, telling her they were glad the media craze ended, and that no one is upset with her … they thought she did great in her interview clearing things up and keeping things private as such subjects should be
Koga refrained from teasing her because he knew she had a difficult time, and had heard from the police report that her mother was hospitalized … a few people asked, but Kyoko told them her mother was home and feeling better
She rejoined the cast again on Wednesday, and rearranged her schedule to meet with them to film her last few scenes on Thursday … she knew she might need to go back for reshoots later on, but she was done by the time Thursday night ended
On Friday, Kyoko had a day off to relax … she finally saw Todoh-san who came over after finishing work … Her mother had decided to go back to work the next Monday, so he came over to give her a few files she needed to go over
He suggested they go out to eat dinner, and they both agreed
(In the Restaurant)
Kyoko, Saena and Todoh arrive at a semi-fancy restaurant … they were seated quickly as it wasn't that busy
Kyoko sat facing both Todoh-san and her mother … who sat side-to-side
Saena looked over the menu and choose something easy to eat, Todoh choose a fancy steak, while Kyoko choose something not pricy … however she was convinced to choose something she liked instead of worrying about the prices
After all the orders were taken, the waiter left their table to get their drinks
Todoh looked at Saena, who nodded nervously
Kyoko noticed the silent communication going on, but she wasn't sure she should be asking anything
Although anxious, Saena started: Kyoko … we sort of have a topic we would like to discuss with you
Kyoko: sure … what is it?! … is it about the case? … or Morizumi Kimiko?
Saena: Neither … its …. (she looked down unsure how to break the news to her daughter)
Todoh looked at Saena, then said: I confessed my feelings to your mother, and we talked about that last week
Saena got some courage back and said: we decided that we wanted to date one another … (she bit her lip) then said apprehensively: however, … I want you to know that if you're not ok with it, then we won't … I don't want to ruin what we have now
Kyoko looked at them for a minute before asking: why wouldn't I be ok with it?!
Saena: I …
Kyoko reassured: I don't think you need to worry about my opinion, … I think it's great that your opening your heart again, to someone trustworthy like Todoh-san … I want you to be happy, so I won't stand between you two!
Saena: I still want you to know that you will come first … I have a responsibility to you as your mother … I want to ensure this won't bother, or hurt you!
Todoh: I promise that I won't take your time away … because I also thinks it's great you two are on good terms and I don't want to be the person who ruins that
Reassuring, Kyoko said: Todoh-san, you were nothing but supportive, and you were the person who helped me contact her again, … you can't possibly ruin something you helped fix!
Todoh: I'm glad I could help!
Kyoko: I'm very happy for you two! … (she looked at her mother) and said: I know Todoh-san cares so much, so I'm sure he will make you happy! … he told me that he liked you before, so I'm sure of it!
Todoh teased, asked: are you sure you're ok with someone like me?! … I did say some weird things that may have made you feel uncomfortable?
Kyoko: well, you only said them once, and ever since I moved in, and got to meet you more often, and I think I've grown to like you a lot! … you're a great person despite the weird things you say! … it makes you, you … and you're a good guy, who protected and helped both of us many times, so nothing will make me think your bad because I trust you!
Todoh: I'm glad I have your trust, and I will cherish that well … I will not disappoint!
Saena didn't know that Kyoko would be this supportive … she was happy, but still nervous to some extent
Kyoko: I support your relationship wholeheartedly!
Saena: thank you, … I also want you to know that we'll be careful, as we don't want you to be uncomfortable
Todoh: Yes, because your opinion matters to us!

The guy: Oi! … are you deaf or something?! … can't ya hear me!
Kyoko fondled with her phone, she knew she had 20 minutes before the train is scheduled to arrive
The guy became irritated, so he walked closer, invading her personal space, he grabbed her shoulder, saying: you might be a beauty, but you sure are rude! … being good looking doesn't mean you can ignore people as you wish!

The guy didn't know English well, since he slacked in school and was never interested in foreign languages … so he looked confused, but decided to walk away, because he knew that he couldn't stand a chance if he was to fight a large man like Ren

Kyoko smiled and said: hey!
Ren: since when did you have wireless headphone?
Kyoko: ah … Muse-sama gave them to me … she said it suits my image!
Ren smiled and said: you look amazing indeed!
Kyoko blushed at how straightforward he's being … she wondered if it was his disguise, or because he already confessed, that he feels freer to express his feelings … then she thought (does he like me when I look like this? … when I'm transformed? … or is because I'm Kyoko … I wonder?)
Ren: how do I look?!
Kyoko: I don't know if that color suits you! … I'm sorry!
Ren: I agree … however I choose it in particular!
Kyoko: why?
Ren: because I don't look good looking like this! … ha ha

It has been a tough month, and I'm sorry I didn't release a chapter earlier as my grandmother passed away earlier this month, and I wasn't in the right headspace to write, edit or post. But I'm glad I can come back and release a chapter on the 2nd year mark of this fic
