Chapter 39: "I will Always Protect you"
(That Night – Setsu and Cain's Room)
Kyoko looked at him, looking pale, then said: Am I going to disappear?!
Ren: that's never going to happen! … ever! … (he held her hand) then said: it's just a nightmare!
Kyoko nodded … she then tried to get up
Ren: water?
Kyoko nodded
Ren: stay, I will get it for you …. (he got her a bottle of water, opened it) then said: here
Kyoko drank some water … then handed the bottle back to Ren
Ren noticed that she was shivering, so he asked: are you cold?
Kyoko: I'm scared, Kuon … what if it happens … what if they keep going after me and make me disappear for real?
Ren: not on my watch! … I will never allow it, neither will your mother, or Todoh-san, even the president and Yashiro! … will be there to protect you… no one will let this happen! … trust me when I tell you that I will protect you with my life!
Kyoko nodded while biting her lip nervously
Ren said softly: hey … I know it's scary, not knowing their next move, but I'm sure we're ahead of them … we have the law by our side, and if they dare to break it again, they will be punished!
Kyoko: Thank you Kuon … I'm glad you're here because I always feel safe by your side!
Ren smiled and said: you can count on me …. (he sat beside her) then said: I'm not leaving your side!
Kyoko laid her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes … trying to get back to sleep
Ren held her hand in his … stroking her knuckles with his thumb, as she fell asleep
After 5 minutes, Ren laid Kyoko down to sleep comfortably, but didn't leave her side … he sat on the floor next to her bed, still holding and stroking her hand gently … he tried to turn off his phone, but clicked on the wrong button, so music played once again
Ren decided to give in and listen while he stayed by her side … the first song that played was nothing special … but the song that played next bought him so many emotions
As he listened to the words carefully, he fell in love with the song more and more … he looked at Kyoko's sleeping figure, looking peaceful and comfortable … and lovingly said: this might be our forever song, Kyoko!
Kyoko didn't really hear him but smiled as she was comfortable and felt safe where she was
Ren saved the song to a new playlist and added the other song he liked earlier … he smiled happily and decided to listen to more, hoping he can get more options to show Kyoko one day … thinking (maybe one of these, would become "Our Song")
(The Next Morning)
Kyoko woke up feeling much better … she knew her day was going to be nerve-wracking as she decided to meet the Tragic Marker cast, but knowing Ren will be by her side made her much more confident
She sat up and looked at his bed, but he wasn't there … she then tried to get up, but almost stepped on his back
Ren had fallen asleep at some point, and since he was next to Kyoko's bed, he slept in a sitting position, but over the rest of the night, he had laid down on the floor, because he wanted to stay next to her
Kyoko tried to wake him, but he wasn't really getting up
Ren was too tried since he spent all night, and early hours of the morning listening to music and adding to his playlist that he changed the name to "Our forever" playlist
Kyoko: Ren! … wake up … Cain?! …. Kuon?!
Ren was slowly waking up, but hearing his real name made him open an eye and say in English: ya?
Kyoko: wake up!
Ren sluggishly opened both his eyes and realized where he was sleeping … he sat up and said: sorry, I must have dozed off!
Kyoko: you shouldn't sleep on the floor! … not for …
Ren interrupted her saying: don't … please don't tell me not to do things for you! … besides, it's not that I'm uncomfortable or anything … I wanted to stay by your side and that's what I did!
Kyoko felt bad but didn't want to argue with him, so she said: thank you, but please put your comfort first!

Saena and Todoh spend most of their time here, after finishing work … they spent time working on their case, cooking and eating dinner, and watching a tad bit of TV
But nothing else happens… nothing intimate … nothing worth mentioning
Todoh didn't mind spending all his time with Saena, in her place … and as much as he wanted to hold her and kiss her, … he held himself back … he had already given her his word that he wouldn't do anything at her place
But at the same time, he didn't want to be the one to suggest they go to his place … as he didn't want to seem eager for intimacy, and he wanted to ensure that Saena didn't consider him a pervert … so he held back his desires and spent his time with her happily … he valued their time together, no matter what they did

Saena: indeed … it felt slow in the beginning, but … time does flow faster when you're busy with other things

Kyoko finished packing all her things … and double-checked the room before they check out of the hotel for the last time
Ren: I'm sure we got everything … we didn't have much, to begin with
Kyoko: umm … Cain, I have a question
Cain: what is it?
Kyoko: those clothes that you bought … what do I do with them?
Cain casually answered: keep them!
Kyoko: but, I don't normally wear those types of clothes!
Cain: then, throw them away if you don't need them!
Kyoko: I can't possibly throw away something that is in good condition!

As Cain closed the door behind him, they both felt sad because it was officially over, their stay in this room as Cain and Setsu
They both walked away, riding the elevator down, and got into the car that awaited them outside

At around 5:40, Cain and Setsu arrived … and were welcomed by director Konoe, who was glad to see Kyoko there as well … he took them to their private room and said: here, you can put your things and get changed if you want
Setsu: Thanks!
Cain nodded and went to set on the couch
Director Konoe: I will call you when everyone has arrived … we're waiting on 3 more members of the cast
Cain nodded but said nothing
Setsu sat down next to him, … they looked at each other and smiled

As Setsu and Cain sat together at a table, they had just finished their food … Manaka came over and said: Can I have a word with you, Setsuka-san?
Setsu looked at Cain, who nodded to her … so she got up and walked away following Manaka … she felt nervous wondering what Manaka wanted to say
Manaka took Setsu to an empty corner, and said: here is fine?
Setsu nodded, saying nothing
Manaka: I kept thinking about the time we met the other day, and I got to say, I understand why you didn't talk to me then … I just hope I didn't make you feel bad or anything, I know I said some things about you, and I'm sorry

Ruto escorted Kyoko out of the building secretly and into his car … and then drove her home
Ren took off his Cain disguise and returned to the party, … he reentered the party venue when the interview finished broadcasting the reveal … and he was reintroduced to the crowd attending the party

He gazed into her eyes, begging for permission … the last thing he wanted to do is something that will upset her and break the rules he suggests they set … so he made up his mind …
As they stared at each other … Todoh raised his hand, and softly touched her shoulder … his hand slowly moved to her face, … he tucked some of her hair behind her ear tenderly, before cupping her face
Saena didn't move back or away … she was surprised he made a move and wasn't sure what he was about to do … but she didn't mind … she gave him the chance to express his feelings
He took a deep breath, then leaned in … he softly pressed his lips on her forehead, landing a soft, light kiss with so much affection and appreciation … his lips lingered ever so slightly before pulling away …
He stepped back giving her space and said: Good night, Mogami
Saena blushed and nodded … feeling a bit overwhelmed by what just transpired
He opened the door, and said while smiling: See you tomorrow …
As he moved to close the door behind himself, he heard: Good night, Todoh
His smile widened as he nodded to her, before closing the door
He stood there, and didn't leave right away … he was happy that she didn't protest or get upset, and hoped that his feelings reached her … he then slowly walked away
Saena Stood near the door in a daze … she didn't know how to feel about what just happened
A surge of emotions came rushing to her mind, along with long lost memories she buried away since she started working … she buried those feelings away when her mother passed away … leaving her to be all alone
She remembered how her mother use to comfort her by kissing her on the forehead after being bullied about her eyebrows by her peers and teachers
She remembered how she used to be kissed good night as he mother put her to bed when she was 7 … that all stopped when she had turned 12 … reaching the difficult teenage years where physical affection is frowned upon, and even causes embarrassment when it comes from the parents
She reached and touched her forehead, trying to figure out how she felt … she was happy, to say the least, but there was more than just that
No one had kissed her in such a way since her mother … even "Misonoi" never kissed her there
She recalled a memory …
Her parents were never physically intimate in front of her … Her father never kissed her mother's lips right before her, or even hugged her … they even refrained from holding hand when she was around
But, … her father always kissed her mother's forehead before leaving for a work-related trip … she never understood why he only kissed her mother there … and she never understood the meaning behind it … she also never understood why it left her mother in a great mood, making her smile until he was to return
Now that she had experienced such a kiss from her partner, it made her realize what it meant … and why her mother looked so happy and content
That kiss was nothing explicit … but it made her feel happy … appreciated … loved and honored … she felt so much affection from it … but it was comfortable … it was satisfying enough that she wasn't in need for more
There was something behind this type of kiss that made it feel so special coming from her partner … she was aware of his feelings for a while, but now she was sure of them
She leaned her back on the wall, next to the door, and smiled happily, feeling elated by her new-found feelings and experience
(Saena's apartment building – first floor)
As Todoh walked out of the elevator … he smiled happily … he had spent all his time with the woman he loves … she was getting a little more comfortable being around him … She didn't seem to mind what he just did, which is all he wanted or needed … he was content with that
He looked up to see a familiar figure entering the building, so he greeted them, saying: Kyoko-chan, welcome back ~
Kyoko smiled and said: Good evening, Todoh-san
Todoh: how was work?
Kyoko: It went well … better than I expected! … I'm very happy it ended on such a good note!
Todoh smiled and said: I'm happy for you! … that's great to hear!
Kyoko: leaving already?

An older woman stopped and helped him, giving him clear directions to where he can find the bakery he was looking for
Meanwhile, Kyoko had picked the feminine pads and a few cremes, and some face wash … as she stood in line, she was approached by a familiar face

The big guy snapped and grabbed her arm … and pulled her

The big guy told the short guy to get the car ready … as their fourth partner was waiting nearby in their car
He tried to drag Kyoko but she resisted
The big guy warned: come quietly or I will have to use force!
Nakano understood what was going on, and seeing Kyoko struggle bothered her … so she ran towards them and swung her purse, hitting the big guy on his face … which allowed Kyoko to slip away from his grip
Akemi Nakano shouted: Run! … as fast as you can!
Kyoko didn't think twice and listened to the wise lawyer who helped her … as she tried to run off … the short guy grabbed her purse leading her phone to fly out … Kyoko didn't notice her phone, but was able to yank her purse out of his hands forcefully …before using her ultra-fast speed to run off!
The big man looked at Akemi with anger and said: look what you did you fucking hag!
The two guys ran after Kyoko but couldn't keep up, so they called the other two men who were standing as backup …
As she was running away, Kyoko missed her turn so she decided to turn on the next street and take the long way back, hoping she could lose them by then
The two extra men split up and ran on both sides of the street … Kyoko noticed the one running towards her … knowing there are two behind her … so she decided to cross the straight to avoid them … with only 5 seconds on the green walking light … she took the chance and ran as fast as she could
She almost reached the other side one she saw a bulky guy approaching her … she froze for a second trying to think of a way out … and decided to go back and outrun the other 3 … they didn't look strong enough or fast enough to stop her … but as she turned the bulky guy ran after her and dove in front of a car … catching Kyoko's leg in the process leading her to fall
Ren who missed a turn was trying to figure out how to work out the google maps … he looked up to see his beloved running in fear … and thought: what's going on?
He soon noticed the two men following her … so he sprang into action right away … running to help her … although he didn't know what was going on, he wasn't going to sit around and watch … he was going to save her even if she didn't need saving
He saw her trying to get away from the two men and noticed the third … and as she crossed the street he noticed the fourth… he saw her freeze up … and try to run the other way … but as soon as the bulky guy dove, Ren's expression changed completely …
He was no longer Ren … he wasn't Cain either … He was Kuon who was burning in anger
He ran as fast as he could and jumped up, … as he landed, he went into a kicking stance and landed a kick on the bulky guy who tried to get up after tripping Kyoko
The guy flew off hitting the car waiting to cross the intersection
The 3 others came soon after trying to snatch Kyoko while Kuon was busy beating the bulky guy … but unfortunately for them, Kuon already noticed them, and he gave them a hard beating … before grabbing Kyoko's arm helping her up, saying in English: I promised I will always protect you!
Kyoko recognized him right away … but before she could say anything … he scooped her up and ran off … one of the 4 guys got up and tried to stop him, but in the spur of the moment, Kyoko threw her shopping bag at him, making him stumble and fall … then she held onto Ren tightly, with her arms hugging his neck … He ran as fast as possible, and thanks to his long legs, he was able to outrun them easily… he reached a crowded street and entered it, blending with the people around them … Ren looked around for a good hiding spot, and found a narrow spot between two buildings … so he swiftly got in there and hid with Kyoko without anyone noticing them
In the meantime, … Yashiro finished his call … he noticed a message from Todoh-san, so he opened it and read it … he then looked around, but he didn't see the car in question, so he overlooked the matter
He smiled at the thought that he got Kyoko an interesting opportunity and wondered if she was willing to take it, given it wasn't really an acting job
Suddenly, his phone got a text from Ren, with a pinpointed location … asking him to come to pick them up as soon as possible … he wondered if they both got lost and found each other … so he drove towards them as he hummed a nice tone, thinking that those two love birds met by chance on the street … making it seem like they can find one another wherever they go … concluding (they are meant to be together!)
Once he arrived, … he looked around but didn't see them, … so he got out of his car … when the big guy attacked him from out of nowhere
Ren noticed and shouted: be careful!
Yashiro saw the guy, and defend himself … he was thankful he took some martial arts growing up … so he used it to his advantage … He then said: Take it and leave!
Ren looked out, picked Kyoko up, and Ran towards Yashiro's car … Yashiro threw his key to them … and said: I will call you!
Ren nodded and Kyoko caught the key … she swiftly entered the car and climbed from the driver seat to the passenger seat allowing Ren to sit in the driver seat, close the door, and lock it … then drove away at the maximum speed allowed
Ren noticed a car that started tailing them, so he used his past driving experience from the US and drove recklessly … drifting from one street to another until he lost the guy … he then hurried and got into an underground parking lot before being seen by any of the 6 people going after them
At this point, the police arrived and arrest the 4 guys Kuon and Kyoko knocked out … another arrested the big man attacking Yashiro … while they chased the 6th guy who was driving his car like a crazy man, looking for his victims
They lost him … but since they got his license plate, they put a tracker on the car and worked effortlessly to find him!
Ren parked the car … and tried to calm down … his adrenaline was still in his system … as he stayed alert to his surroundings
Yashiro was let go by the police as bystanders raced to defend him, describing the attack he faced … and street cameras doubled down as proof
He contacted lory to tell him what happened
He then heard the police talking about a car that was following him, and recognized it was one and the same as the one Todoh has alerted him about … so he talked to the police and informed them about the matter, and he was told the person was on the run, and no longer following his charges
Yashiro raced to the underground parking lot, and found his car … he then approached It, but saw no one in the front two seats … he almost freaked out … but then noticed they were both sitting in the back seat, so he sighed in relief and used his spare key to access the car
He sat in the driver's seat and said: are you ok?
Ren: Are you ok?!
Yashiro: I'm am! … what about Kyoko?
Kyoko was still a little shaken but had calmed down since

Ren: let's get out of here first!

Nanami: don't you think the police will retaliate!

She hoped she could figure out a way to get them to bring Kyoko to her without agreeing to their terms … then turn on them and have the police get them … she would be the hero that protected her grandchild and would make Kyoko feel obliged to obey her and follow her back to the US

Todoh answered with a casual tone: I got your text …
Satoshi: scrap that … that car was just reported as stolen!
Shocked, Todoh asked: what?!
