Chapter 40: Aftereffects
(At Viride General Law Office)
Todoh: we can't sit and wait … I will call him!
But the moment Todoh picked up the phone he got a phone call from Yashiro, so he answered not wasting a second, asking: hey, you spotted that car?!
Yashiro: no, I didn't see it… however, I'm calling to report that some people tried to abduct Kyoko-chan!
Shocked, Todoh freaked out as he asked: what?! … what happened?!
Saena was alarmed, so she asked him: put him on speaker, please!
Todoh got up and said: let's go somewhere more private ... give us a second!
It was nearly lunchtime, so many of the meeting rooms were unoccupied … so they borrowed one, and once Todoh closed the door, he put the phone on speaker, placed it on the table, and sat with Saena … then asked: can you tell me what happened

Todoh: is she ok?!
Yashiro: well … she's shaken by what happened … but otherwise she's ok … she did sustain some slight injuries when she fell, due to them trying to stop her from running away
Anxious, Saena asked: where is she right now?!
Yashiro: she's with Ren! … we won't let her out of our sight!
Saena: so, the police are aware of what happened?
Yashiro: yes … I was told they would contact you soon … perhaps they are busy trying to catch the last guy on the run!
Saena: alright … thank you for letting us know … please keep her safe!
Todoh: did they say anything … or did you notice anything unique about them?!
Yashiro: well, … the guy I fought off seemed shady … he had some sort of snake tattoo on his arm
Saena: snake tattoo?
Todoh: maybe some gang from that rotten black market … or Yakuza
Yashiro: do you think that old lady is behind it?!

While Yashiro was contacting everyone from the president, to Todoh-san and the police … He stayed outside for a little while to watch if the car ever followed them … he was still on the phone the whole time
Ren and Kyoko sat in his dressing room … Ren didn't want her to be alone at any time and kept her as close as he possibly can
Ren had requested the first aid kit, and bandaged Kyoko's injuries she sustained when she fell down … it was only minor and she insisted she was fine
One of the staff members came in and gave them 2 bottles of water and delivered Ren's first photoshoot outfit
Ren thanked them, hanging the outfit, before handing Kyoko an opened bottle of water saying: relax, and drink this …
Kyoko: thank you
Worried, Ren asked: are you feeling better now?
Kyoko nodded, then drank some water … she sighed and said: I'm ok … you don't have to worry too much … and … Thank you for saving me!
Ren: I will always be there to protect you! … I promised I will and I will keep that promise as long as I live!
Kyoko smiled and nodded
Ren: so, … what did you want from the pharmacy … I can get it for you after I'm done here!

Ren: did you know, … my father bought those products for my mother all the time!
Kyoko raised her head in surprise, asking: he does?!
Ren nodded and said: yes, and he took me with him every once in a while, … he told me that there is no shame in doing so … even Ric … Tina once had an emergency, so we ran to the grocery store and he got her what she needed, including chocolates and ice-cream
Kyoko: chocolates and Ice cream?!
Ren: yeah … apparently, she loved eating those at that time of the month!
Kyoko: I see … so, in the US, it's normal for men to buy those products?
Ren: yes, … I personally believe that there is no shame in doing so, … if it's needed, then I would get it for you … just tell me what you need and I will get it!
Kyoko wanted to decline, but at the same time, she wasn't going to go to the pharmacy with either of the guys because she thought it would be too embarrassing … she didn't want to turn him down either, because he was being thoughtful

Kyoko wanted to say something else, but a knock on the door made her halt any attempts to say anything … she had wanted to say that he looked great in anything, but decided not to in the end

Ren posed for another 2 minutes, before being ushered to his room for the next outfit … he looked at her, but when he saw that Yashiro was with her, he smiled and left … he came back 3 minutes later … and stepped back on set
Kyoko couldn't help but fall for him all over again … she thought (he looks extremely handsome, … maybe even … no Kyoko! … don't be impure!)
Her angel appeared with her mouth covered by her devil, who said: just admit it! … don't listen to her! … you can't be pure forever! … falling in love is normal and it's completely ok to think of impure things!
Her angel fought back, pushing the devil away, saying: hold tight to your resolve!
Kyoko listened to her devil, saying mindlessly: he looks sexy!

Ren was finished with his second outfit … so he went to get changed once again … but it took longer this time because they wanted to style his hair for this one
Kyoko got up and said: I forgot my water!
Yashiro: ah … do you want something else to drink … there is a vending machine in the hall
Kyoko nodded and said: then I will go get something … do you want anything?
Yashiro: I will come with you!
Kyoko: it's fine … you don't have to follow me everywhere … I'm going to be ok!

Without thinking, Ren stepped off and ran towards Yashiro, demanding: where is she?!

Ren assumed she went to the restroom and knew that neither of them can join her there … so he returned to set and posed for a few pictures
He saw Emma-san approach Johan, and whispered something … he then nodded nonchalantly and said: alright … 2 more, and we will be moving on to our next set for a short while
Tony snapped more pictures, then said: we're done
Johan: alright, Ren-kun … go get changed … give him outfit #13, please!
As they moved to the neighboring set, workers got it all ready to be used
Johan: she canceled?
Emma: yeah!
Johan: so, what now?
Emma: I told you, I found a replacement
Johan: that's fast, even for you!
Emma: she was lurking here as a guest … she's perfect I tell you! … I'm sure she will do just fine!
A few minutes later, the make-up artist came out with a dolled-up Kyoko, saying: she's ready!

He stared at Kyoko as she walked behind Emma … she looked flawless … amazing … and drop-dead gorgeous … she wasn't any character … she was just "his Kyoko"
There was a sparkle in Ren's eyes … as he stared at Kyoko with intense curiosity
Yashiro could see that Ren was excited to see Kyoko … and thought (if he was any other guy, his jaw would be on the floor … he's really holding back, although I can tell he's already head over heels fallen for her!)
Emma ushered Kyoko to step on set … and joined her then said: I don't think you need any introductions, given you share the same manager!
Ren smiled, then slyly commented: I wouldn't mind being reintroduced to this beauty!
Hearing that, Kyoko turned beat red in an instant
Yashiro almost shrieked in shock … Ren was openly complimenting her … and Kyoko didn't freak out and ran off … this was indeed progress!
Emma looked at Ren, and noticed that Kyoko is all he was paying attention to, thinking (Is he into her?! … is his heart finally captured)
Kyoko looked at Ren nervously … she wasn't sure if he would be happy to see her on the same stage … she thought (am I interrupting his work?! …am I being rude?! … oh no! … am I imposing?! … I never considered that when I accepted the job)

Kioshi and Anna returned with their two youngest boys … as Hiroki was hanging out with Diana on almost a daily basis
As the boys entered their parent's room playfully running after one another, reenacting a scene from the live show they had just watched… Anna said: don't run!
Kioshi: I'm glad they had fun!
Anna: it's wasn't bad … I personally enjoyed it too!
Kioshi: that's great … I slept halfway… so I don't even know what happened
Anna: well, … as long as you took them and their happy … that's all that matters!
Kioshi: yeah!
Anna: we should ask Diana and mark to join us for dinner, tonight!
Kioshi: sure!
They suddenly heard a muffled thud, so Anna ran to see if it was either of her boys, but they were just fine

The ambulance crew put Nanami on a stretcher and carried her away …the police officer dragged the 3 criminals and asked Kioshi to leave as they looked around for evidence
Kioshi returned to his room, pale as ever
Anna asked: what happened … Kioshi?!
Looked up at his wife and said: they tried to kidnap Kyoko for my mom … they failed, and now she's unconscious … I don't know if she's involved
Anna was mortified … she said: what the hell?!
Kioshi: I'm going to go to the hospital and check … I will be back for dinner!

While the guys refused to talk at first, the weaker one of them finally talked confirming Nanami's statement, as they had approached her with the idea, to get more money out of her
But he did blame Nanami, as she didn't pay them for the camera installation and they got hit hard by that, so they used that to get more out of her
Satoshi did mention that Nanami gave them her account information, but her husband had declined to pay, as the payment was flagged according to his bank and secretary from the US
Todoh thanked his brother and hung up before looking at Saena
Saena: I don't feel any sympathy for her … I couldn't care less if she was hurt … although her involvement in this is indirect, she's still a part of it … if she had made sure the payment went through, they wouldn't have approached Kyoko … and although she never agreed to the plan, I'm sure she didn't hate the idea!

As Tony ran around taking countless pictures … seeming more and more excited … he laughed as he said: this is pure perfection! … I can't get enough of this!
The music just gave a different vibe to the whole photoshoot, Ren and Kyoko were vibing together, while Tony danced around as he snapped pictures … leaving Johan and Emma to smile and nod to the songs being played
Yashiro who was supposed to be watching his surroundings, had his eyes fixated on his favorite couple … they looked perfect together … they complimented one another … and he too, couldn't get enough of it either … he fangirled from the sidelines, but then snapped to being a professional when he saw people approach the set from the corner of his eyes

Johan: I see … this is just the standard 5-year contract, … we are allowed, and are open to altering some of the rules-based on negotiations
Yashiro: but, I have seen this contract, but it never had item 2!
Johan: that's because she's a female … we have two standard 5-year contracts, one for each gender!
Yashiro: as I expected! … don't you think it's unfair?!
Johan: Well, this comes from the parent company … I understand why you are upset, but, you have to consider that pregnancy affects women in different ways, which can prevent them from doing their job!
Yashiro: sure, I know that … but I wouldn't think it's fair to put that in the rules, … you are basically saying that if she gets pregnant, you're going to terminate her!
Kyoko interjected: Yashiro-san, it's ok … I already signed a different contract that had the same rule!
Shocked, Yashiro asked: when?

Yashiro: It's ok to not have a child, but at the same time, I don't want you to lose your contract because of perhaps … "an accident" if it ever occurs … being terminated is my biggest issue! … Can't women return to modeling after having a child?
Johan: Well, many models quit after having children … and more often than not, their body changes, so … I guess this rule is to protect the model population we have
Emma: I don't know any models that have resumed work with us after having a child
Yashiro asked dryly: because they were terminated?!
Johan answered: maybe …
Ren: I know models who have returned to work after having children … Maria's late mother was one of them!
Yashiro: Yes! … your right! … Lina Takarada was a world-famous model

Yashiro went over it once more, before giving it to Kyoko, who successfully signed her first modeling contract
Yashiro got a copy of the contract and they shook hands at the end
Johan: before I forget … here! … (he handed Kyoko an envelope) then said: this is your payment for today's work … however, going forward the money will go straight to your bank account!
Kyoko accepted the envelope respectfully and bowed thanking them for the opportunity
Kyoko was also given 3 of the outfits she modeled in, and although she almost declined them, Yashiro told her to take them, as it's part of the contract … she would be representing the brand, so she should dress accordingly
Once the three of them left the office, Kyoko excused herself to the bathroom
Johan exited his office and said: Ren-kun … a word
Ren was taken aside and was given an envelope
Ren asked: what is this?
Johan gestured to open it
Ren opened the envelope to see a printed picture of Kyoko in the dress he loved … the next two pictures were of them together in a rather sexy position
Ren looked at him, slightly bemused
Johan: you're welcome!
Ren chuckled and thanked the man, who just waved and walked away
(In the Bathroom)
Kyoko took the bag with her as she needed it … she was eternally grateful for Ren's help
She opened the bag, and got what she needed … then used the bathroom
She then washed her hand and picked up the bag again, when she noticed something else in the bag
She opened the bag and took out the two boxes to find a small box, that had a bundle of snacks … she took it in hand and said: why is this here? … was he hungry?!
She then remembered what Ren told her about Ric and Tina and blushed in confusion, thinking (why?!)
She started feeling a different range of emotions … happy, excited, touched … and confused …
She stared at the snacks for a minute or so … then put them back in the bag, along with the two boxes, and left the restroom
As they walked to Yashiro's car … Kyoko stopped and asked about the snacks … and he embarrassingly explained that he didn't know what to get her, as she rarely ever snacked
Kyoko asked: then why not get chocolates?
Ren: I considered that … but the older women said it might hurt you because not all women react the same … and … I didn't know if you are open to eating chocolates since that incident
Kyoko was deeply touched by his thoughtfulness … he was very considerate, and compassionate
Kyoko smiled tearfully and thanked him wholeheartedly as he truly made her day ... she completely forgot about the terrible events with her mind full of the wonderful experiences she just had
Ren: it wasn't much! … (he reached out wiping the tear-off)
Yashiro proceeded to enter his car when he realized that his two charges weren't with him … he saw Ren touch her face, so he put on his glove as fast as he could, and snapped a few pictures, before hiding his phone in his pocket when they started advancing towards him
(In the Hospital)
Kioshi came into his mother's room and greeted her dryly
Nanami: Kioshi … my loving son! … thank you for coming
Kioshi stood at a distance, and didn't advance to hold her hand … he blankly asked: how involved were you?!
Nanami: what do you mean?!
Kioshi: in this kidnapping scheme … how involved were you?!
Nanami defended: It wasn't my idea!
Kioshi: I know that … but I want to know how you really felt about it
Nanami: you're asking, as If you don't know me?!
Kioshi: I don't … not anymore at least … so please give me an honest answer
Nanami: I didn't agree to their terms! … if that's what you are concerned about!
Kioshi: you didn't want to pay, or … you were against the idea, to begin with?

Raising an eyebrow, Kioshi: what?
