Chapter 41: Sangria Twist
(In Saena's Apartment)
Todoh stayed for dinner, and helped Saena prepare it … after they ate, they cleaned up and sat down, to work on the Morizumi case
After Hitomi Tanaka was arrested, Kimiko refused to come back … knowing what would happen if she did … even her parents couldn't convince her to come back and put an end to the matter
Todoh tapped his pen and said: what about, increasing the punishment suggestion … we can't impose anything, but we can threaten her, that if she doesn't come back, we will increase our recommendation, with possible asking for 25 to life … sadly the law won't allow her to be tried as an adult, so we need to focus on the type of punishment we can ensure she receives
Saena: I agree with you on that, … Even though we have all the evidence, Tanaka Satomi won't be tried as an adult either

After work, Todoh-san and Saena decided to go out for an early dinner, knowing that Kyoko would be busy all-day
After having a nice dinner at a nearby restaurant … they got back into the car, heading back to Saena's place
As much as he wanted to go on his own, he wasn't sure she was ready for that … and not that he was planning to do anything in particular … he thought (I need to figure out how to be frank when it comes to romance … but in the same time, pay attention to her and her ques!)
As he was driving, he got a call from the building manager, asking him to come, as soon as possible … as there was a leak in the apartment above his, and they needed him to let them in, so they can ensure that no major leak happened … they needed to find the issue before it got worse if any
Todoh looked at her, unsure if he should go to his place, or drop her off first
Saena: you shouldn't make them wait! … I don't mind coming along!
Todoh: are you sure? I don't know how long this would take!
Saena: it's fine … really!
Saena was secretly happy that they got a chance to go to his place, without having to ask … she did think that she needed to be more honest with him, but at the same time, she was still feeling awkward about the intimacy part of the relationship
Todoh turned around and drove back to his place instead … he was also secretly happy for such a situation to happen, hoping it might break some ice that accumulated due to their awkwardness when it comes to getting close in a physical way
They acted normally around each other and enjoyed each other's company, but they both thought that something needs to change, because it didn't feel too different than just being friends

As he parked the car, they both head to his place, and found the apartment manager standing there, looking apologetic, … he bowed, apologizing for interrupting their time … but stressed it was important to prevent any major issues in the future
Upon opening the door, they found the ceiling dripping … he looked at the manager who paled fearing the worst might be happening indeed

After the manager and his crew left … Todoh and Saena were left alone to deal with the water splatters … Saena didn't complain at all, instead, she offered to help … so they cleaned up the kitchen, and with their joined effort, they finished in no time

After spending the majority of his time with Saena … he finally came back home … as he approached his apartment, his neighbor approached him and said: I'm sorry that my daughter interrupted your time with your lady … she didn't mean to!
Todoh looked at her and said: it's fine, as long as she doesn't do it again … it's annoying!
The Neighbor: well, … she can't help it, you're a great guy, and she's attracted to you

He was overjoyed by today's progress and hoped to taste her lips again soon … as he never felt so connected to someone like this before. He smiled as he slowly slipped into a deep slumber

Kyoko woke up, like every morning, and made breakfast … as her mother still couldn't do much with one of her hands in a cast
She had noticed that her mother seemed much happier lately, and thought maybe this time he mother will be happy for real
She looked down at the breakfast as she remembered that her mother was meeting that old lady, and grumbled … she was afraid that this old lady would hurt her mother and Todoh-san again … she knew she had limited power to prevent that … but she was willing to figure something out, even if it was joining the meeting herself
Saena joined her and helped as much as she could
Kyoko asked: you will meet the doctor soon about your hand?
Saena: in a week and a half, yes … I'm hoping I could replace it with a brace

Saena: excuse me?! … how am I to blame, when I had nothing to do with it … you're the one who dealt with those shady people, and didn't pay them for their illegal services!
Nanami: if you didn't have your lawyer's brother come after me, and arrested those people, I wouldn't be in this situation!
Akemi: that's nonsense!
Saena: you hate me so much that you want to blame me for anything and everything! … I didn't send anyone to you, … you broke the law and were caught, so you only deserved to be pursued … what happened with the shady people is not related to me at all … stop trying to blame me for things I have no power over … please get to your topic!
Kioshi: I would like to report that her purpose of coming here isn't available anymore
Nanami: Hey! … even if I didn't get what I request, I still came here for my meeting!

Saena: yes! … it's long overdue actually … I should've done that a long time ago!
Todoh: she went too far, so it's only natural that we would pursue her for damages!
Nanami: You said you wouldn't in our first meeting … yet here we are!
Saena: when I said that, it was meant towards your son, and his actions 18 years ago, … which apparently you were the mastermind of! … when you assaulted me, I considered that if I sued you, you would get worse, but perhaps I should've done so anyway … I'm going to fight against you since I'm done playing nice!
Nanami: playing nice you say?! … was it nice brainwashing that child to hate her own father?
Saena: you keep thinking whatever you want … you have nothing to prove I did so! … I'm tired of denying something when you won't even listen!

Saena and Todoh excused themselves … and followed Katagiri to his office, where they found Kyoko and Ren waiting … after speaking for around 5 minutes, … they agreed on letting Kyoko and Ren listen to the meeting and they set it up, before going back to their meeting
While they were away – after two minutes
Upset, Nanami angrily ranted: is this even legal!? … how could they leave in the middle of our meeting?! … who do they take me for?! … is my timeless important and valuable?!
Akemi looked at Nanami but didn't want to argue with her … she was done dealing with her and her devious ways
Kioshi: can you be patient?! … their boss called them for something!
Nanami: why is his "something" more important than our meeting?! … can't he wait until this is over?! … or somehow, we're here for a meaningless errand?!
Casually, Kioshi said: pretty much!
Nanami: what did you say?! … I'm trying to get you your daughter back, and you call this meeting meaningless?!
Saena and Todoh had just come back as Nanami finished her sentence
Kioshi: I told you that I didn't want her … if she didn't want to meet me, then I will respect that! … why bother her and her mother any longer … it's pointless really!
Nanami argued: No, it's not! … your acting like you don't care about your one and only daughter!
Kioshi: I care enough to respect her decision! … I know how hurtful my actions were, and I understand where she's coming from!
Nanami stressed: you missed 17 years of her life! … if you don't take her now, you will never get a chance to form a good relationship … once she's an adult, it will be over for you! … who else will walk her down the aisle when she gets married to a rich celebrity! … we can't miss out on the limelight!
Frustrated, Kioshi argued back: so be it … she has a life here with her mother and friends! … her whole life is here, and you expect me to take her away from all that? … from everything she has ever known, so she can live in a foreign country with pure strangers!? … we might be related by blood, but that's not enough … you can't just take away everything and replace it with people who don't know her … we're 100% different people and she's better off being with people who value her … then being with people like us! … I've done wrong to her mother, and I don't deserve a chance, so stop it already!
Nanami: are you saying you won't value her?!
Kioshi: is that all you heard?! … that very selective hearing you have there! … I never said I won't value her … but she's already valued by her family, friends, and fans … why take her away from all that!? … you might think it will be smooth sealing if you take her … but it won't … because we live different lives, and that's not going to settle well with her … I'm not doubting her ability to adapt, … but the main issue here is not respecting her own wishes and only listening to your own!
Nanami: I don't respect people who don't respect me!
Kioshi: how do you expect her to respect you after you tried to slander her and her mother?!
Nanami: if she couldn't live here anymore … she would come with us without any hesitation
Akemi: that's foul! … you can't end someone's life and force them to start anew somewhere else! … that's not fair for either of them!
Nanami: I don't care about your opinion! … keep it to yourself! … if you have nothing to say that is supportive of our case, then shut up!
Saena: treating your lawyer like that won't get you anywhere!
Nanami: keep your opinion to yourself … your lawless whore!
Akemi: Hey! … enough with the insults … get to your point, or we will end this meeting here!
Saena: those insults didn't get you anywhere last time, yet that's all you can think of!
Todoh and Saena sat down once again
Nanami: why was your boss asking you for?! … doesn't he know we're in a meeting?! … can't he have some respect for his clients!
Todoh answered casually: you're not our clients! … so, he doesn't need to respect you!
Nanami: I wasn't asking you! … shut your trap you freak!
Saena: He's my lawyer, and my co-worker … your question was general, so he had every right to answer your question!
Todoh: and whatever he needed us for, is none of your business!
Nanami: you're surely paying him with your ugly ass damaged body!
Angry, Akemi raised her voice saying: enough with those assumptions! … if you don't have respect for the people seated here, then leave … no one wants to do a meeting with someone who doesn't have anything valuable to say … if you are stalling with your insults, then this meeting is over
Nanami: if you don't want me to assume things, you shouldn't assume I have nothing valuable to say!
Akemi: wow! … you're truly shameless! … you expect people to bow down to you, and listen to your insults and assumption, yet, it's a red line when come to you?!
Todoh: if you don't want us to assume anything, then get to your point without using insults … we have other things to do next, so finish up already!
Nanami: you're the one who left the meeting while we were discussing things!
Upset, Akemi warned: last chance … say what you want, or this meeting will end now!
Nanami asked: them leaving distracted me … where were we?!
Akemi: you called me a foolish lawyer for not winning your case, although you had zero chances of winning! …. the law is clear as day, her mother has full custody and that won't change, as her father was never there!
Todoh: frankly, even if Mogami put his name on the birth certificate, it would have been the fake one, so he had no chance to claim to be the father … he would be pursued for fraud as he used an assumed name without registering it … he would be in hot water just for that!
Nanami: if you're saying what he did is a crime then what your daughter is doing is also a crime because her whole job involves acting like someone else by changing her name and even her appearance
Upset, Saena argued: Excuse me! … I will not allow you to take something precious to my daughter and make it into something sinister! …what my daughter does is a job that's called acting! … it's extremely different from what your son did … when he came to me with his sinister plan to steal my information he wasn't acting as a character, he was simply trying to deceive me!
Todoh: Someone who pretended to be someone else to steal valuable information that will help them win in a case against them can't be compared to an actor! … what he did is a crime! … don't take something pure and attempt to turn it into something disgusting like what he did
Nanami: It's the same thing … they both played characters at the end of the day!
Angry, Saena: how low can you go?! … are you seriously trying to compare a job to a crime?! … he might have successfully pretended to be someone else, but for you to compare them is something else … there will never be at the same level, ever … Kyoko does everything to do her best at her job, while he committed a crime because you knew you couldn't win the case without cheating … as a lawyer who studied law, I know there are laws against deception, fraud, and theft, but never was there ever a law that prevented actors from doing their job as entertainers!
Todoh: you can't even compare those two at all! … Kyoko-chan is a performer and a great actress who does everything legally! … don't you dare mix those things together, and claim they are the same
Nanami: I don't want you calling my granddaughter by her given name … never call her by her first name in front of me again … next time you do that, I will accuse you of being a pedophile!
Saena: it's not up to you! … he can call her whatever he wants! … she allowed him to call her Kyoko, so he will keep calling her the same way he always does! … mind your own business … you can't accuse him of such a terrible crime for doing something he's allowed to do!
Nanami: She's my son's daughter! … he should decide who can be close to her … he would never allow a creep like him to get close to his precious daughter
Todoh: your son is nothing but a criminal in our books, and your nothing different … the matter of the fact is that he followed you and committed a crime … you only won that case by cheating your way through for financial gain only!
Nanami: stop calling my son a criminal! … you're Exaggerating ( she pointed at Saena) then said: because she got emotionally hurt, … but in the end, your feelings being hurt doesn't even matters when it comes to losing our case along with millions of dollars … our money is more valued then your pathetic little feelings … and besides, if you actually liked my son in past, you would have let him meet his daughter even against her will … but you're a hypocrite! … you weren't hurt all that much because your feelings were just as fake!
Todoh: So, you're saying that everything he did and all the damage he caused her, and her career doesn't matter because you were going to lose a few million dollars?
Saena: I don't care what she thinks … I'm actually glad my feeling for him weren't as real anyway, as I don't care to love someone who doesn't deserve me … because frankly, I deserve better!
Todoh smiled and nodded without saying anything
Nanami: humph, that's the lamest thing I've ever heard! … anyways, I'm sure you are sour inside because she followed her father's footsteps, instead of yours! … she got all her talents from him, and nothing from you … you must be seething inside that she's nothing like you!
Saena: I'm actually proud of her for choosing her own career and working really hard to achieve what she wants … you can't possibly compare her to him in any way, as they are worlds apart! … His actions don't make him an actor, and he would never be recognized as one either! … there is more to acting than just pretending to be someone else, mind you! … besides, she's not going around hurting people and taking their valuables, as he did!
Todoh: A fake name can't be compared to a character she created and nurtured … her job is more about bringing a character to life, and acting it out as she sees it … she does it in front of a camera, that captures the story of the characters and brings joy to the people watching it! … she can invoke happiness, sadness, frustration, and enjoyment, but that's all for entertainment purposes … while fraud is done to deceive the other party regardless of the motivation behind it … those two things can't be compared at all!
Saena: Stop taking something precious, that my daughter loves, and try to turn it into something evil! … she's nothing like him … and whoever told you that I wished she'd be a lawyer like me?! … I won't impose my dreams on her, so stop assuming things already!
Nanami: you don't know the first thing about my son! … he actually wanted to be an actor once, so how about that?!
Kioshi finally spoke up and said: Stop lying! … I was never interested in becoming an actor!
Nanami: what?!
Kioshi: I was interested in becoming a journalist, but you destroyed that dream so I can come back to you and join the company … if you think I don't know what you did back then, then think again!
Nanami: You're our only heir! … you had to join the family business and take over when your father retires! … you need to understand that! … besides, weren't you in theater?! … isn't that acting?!
Kioshi: I was never in theater, as it was never my interest! … I was in the journalism club!
Nanami: but, you're a great actor! … you were able to deceive her easily! … you can totally become a 5-star actor if you tried!
Kioshi: NO! I wouldn't … not only do I have no interest in acting, but I'm not good either … if you call that acting, then you know nothing! … we all act in some way or another, but that is different than her job!
Nanami: you just contradicted yourself … if we can all act, then so can you!
Kioshi: that's not what I meant! … you can act like you care when you don't … or act like your happy when you're upset … just the basics that everyone does … but her job is different, and sure I pretended to be someone else, but I wasn't doing it as a job or to put a smile on anyone's face! … what I did was terrible, and I will forever regret it!
Nanami: you put a smile on my face!
Kioshi: stop the nonsense already … please! … I'm tired of it all!
~~ knock on the door ~~
Nanami saw Katagiri enter and said: not you again! … stop interrupting our meeting … you …
Nanami froze the moment she saw her husband walk into the room … she was surprised that he came this soon
She then saw Anna walk in behind him, and so at this point, she felt betrayed
Saena and Todoh looked at each other and wondered what was going on
Katagiri: He has asked to join the meeting with his daughter-in-law, is that ok with you two?
Saena wasn't sure about that … but she was curious to see what he would bring to the meeting… if Nanami's reaction has anything telling about it, then things were going to be interesting
Todoh nodded without really caring
Kioshi: I had requested him to join, … please allow it!
Saena: we don't mind … as long as it doesn't take too long …
The man bowed to them, thanking them for letting him join … he then thanked Katagiri as he left the room to let the meeting resume
Once Katagiri was gone … Yasushi looked at his wife with a grim look on his face, then took a few steps toward her
Nanami: I wasn't expecting you to come so soon….
** ~SLAP~ **
A loud echo of the slap was heard, rendering the room silent for a good minute or so … leaving Saena, Todoh, and Akemi baffled … Anna horrified … and Kioshi shocked and terrified
Yasushi didn't stop there … he raised his hand again, and slapped Nanami once more
