Chapter 48: Just Friends!
(In the Ice Cream Shop)
Ren, Kyoko, and Yashiro browsed the flavors available with much enthusiasm from the fairy-loving young lady
Kyoko: How can I choose just one?!
Yashiro: the flavors are quite interesting
Ren smiled and said: why limit yourself, get as much as you want!
Kyoko looked at Ren and asked: are you serious?!
Yashiro covered his face in agony and thought (This Idiot! … how can he say that?!)
Ren: Sure … I'm sure you can taste a few flavors before choosing … you can have more than just one, … don't worry about it!
Kyoko didn't look too happy hearing that … as much as she was grateful to him offering to buy her whatever she wanted … she was more concerned about how much she was willing to eat … taste testing might be a good idea, but it could backfire if she couldn't choose a flavor … moreover she knew Ren wouldn't mind spending his money on her, but she was still uncomfortable with the thought of that because she firmly believed Ren was careless with his spending
Yashiro noticed Kyoko's hesitance, and almost lost it … he was aware of Kyoko's focus on her weight … despite being at a healthy weight, it's hard to maintain such weight if she ate high-calorie desserts at night
Ren also noticed Kyoko's expression and quickly tried to understand what it meant … but before he could say something, Kyoko spoke up
Kyoko: I don't know … we shouldn't eat too much, and I'm afraid that I won't be able to choose one if I tasted multiple flavors
Ren: you're not wrong, sometimes tasting a few options can make it harder to choose one, but it could also help narrow the options to some extent … perhaps you want to try something new, or do you prefer to go with something familiar?

Kyoko froze for a second trying to decipher what he meant by that … she knew that Ren wasn't the biggest fan of sweets so it would make sense if he didn't eat all of his Ice cream
Kyoko looked at Ren and then said: but you should pick something you'd like to eat!
Ren: I'm not picky, … I'm ok with anything
The older lady who was managing the store looked at them, and waited … she didn't really follow any shows, so she didn't recognize them at all
Kyoko: maybe I will taste test a few flavors while we wait for Maria-chan to arrive
Yashiro: good idea
(In Saena's Apartment)
Yayoi: because I truly consider you family!
Saena wasn't sure how to respond to that, but she was truly grateful to Yayoi
Yayoi: so, tell me, how can I help you?
Saena: well, …
Saena ended telling her up everything in order, so she could explain her train of thought and why she was in her current situation … including the accident and the sudden confession
Yayoi: I see … Let me ask this first! … are you happy?
Saena: happy? … well, yes … you can say that …

Yayoi: right, he's also her lawyer… wait, so that means brother knows him?
Saena: yes, … he's aware of our relationship … we did tell him about it because we wanted to ensure we didn't break any rules … he approves of it
Yayoi: I'm glad to hear that, if my brother trusts him, then he must be a good person!
Saena smiled and said: I'm glad to hear that …
Yayoi: I'm not doubting your trust, I'm just saying that the more people know about him and have a good opinion, the better
Saena: your right … I do think that it was a big mistake for me not to tell anyone about that person, … I unconsciously sabotaged myself
Yayoi: I don't think its personally your problem, it's a natural thing for us Japanese to lead a private life outside of work, … besides, unfortunately, your parents were no longer there, which may be one of the reasons you couldn't disclose it to anyone

Yayoi: anyhow … go on, what did you want to ask me
Saena: well … I'm just unsure about how to go about things with him … I do think we are open and honest with one another; I just feel like this isn't a question I can simply ask him
Yayoi: what is it?
Saena shyly and hesitantly asked: do men like it … do men like looking at women's … clothes … and under … garments?
Yayoi: that's an interesting question, but I'm afraid I can't answer it well … because it all depends on your partner
Saena: so, I do need to ask him?
Yayoi: hmm, there are ways around it … you can check and see how they react or respond by testing things … like wearing different styles and seeing how they react to it … if they compliment you on what you are wearing … something like that!

Yayoi: your too concerned with appearances and looking presentable, which isn't all that bad, and I understand where you're coming from … but I think you should take it positively because if nothing was said then everything will be ok … you told me that guy liked you for a long time, so I don't think he will mind if you weren't as presentable as you'd like to be for once, especially if you weren't going too far … but, I do think you should talk about it
Saena: about undergarments?
Yayoi: no, about intimacy!
Saena: we did, we decided not to do it right away … and take our time …
Yayoi: that's good, so he wasn't expecting things to get that far either, and so he shouldn't expect anything, or have anything to say … if he likes you, he won't care too much about how you look … he might just overlook it … say, do you not dress up at all?

Yayoi: I really don't know if he just likes how Kimono look, or if he finds me attractive in them … he's a mystery

Yayoi: come to think of it … 3 years ago, I wanted to celebrate our 15 years of marriage, and I specifically went out and bought some attractive lingerie in his favorite color light blue, and you know what he did when he saw me in them?
Unsure, Saena asked: what did he do?
Yayoi ranted: he looked away and heaved a long sigh …before proceeding to take them off and threw them aside … I never heard him compliment the color, or how I looked in them … and when he threw them aside, I thought he didn't even want to see them … so I never did it again … I even threw it away because I felt so ignored … it's as if what I was wearing prevented him from seeing what he truly wanted to see … as if the lingerie was a wall between him and my body
Saena: oh …
Yayoi: so, I never tried to dress in those again since … nothing changed … we have our intimate times to keep our bond, and marriage together … sometimes it's to let off steam
Saena: so, it's not always romantic?
Yayoi: well, we do have days where we want to express our love … so it is romantic for the most part … but sometimes it feels like a chore … like when we were trying to conceive our idiot son!
Saena: I understand … I don't think my previous relationship had any actual romance … because it was all fake!
Yayoi: you never felt loved?
Saena: I would lie if I said I didn't enjoy it at times, but the more I think about it now, I feel like I was used for my body because that guy never cared about me … I assumed it was love, but it wasn't at all
Yayoi: and you were never trying to conceive …
Saena: never crossed my mind, … I don't think I was that educated on that subject, which is why I was truly shocked when I found out about being pregnant
Yayoi: well, our health education classes were terrible, so no wonder you didn't think of it as a possibility … our parents don't even teach us those things, much less mention them around us … I think my husband knew more about it then I did, when we first got together … and I truly felt stupid about it
Saena: why?
Yayoi: because I just thought we were having too much of it, and he said "well, we do have to produce an heir" … and I was like, "that's how we make a baby?"
Saena: I don't blame you … I assumed baby just happened after people got married … my mother once said people have babies at the right time, which is fate … that's all
Yayoi: honestly … I do think most men are more into it than most women … it surely has more risk for us women, because pregnancy is hell to go through … no wonder I only had one kid!
Saena: I can't agree more … despite my experience is very different than yours
Yayoi: I was thinking about it recently … I do regret not having another kid, despite all the difficulties … and although I know it's not too late, I still feel like it might be
Saena: were you considering having another child?
Yayoi: lately yes … with Shotaro being that of an idiot son who doesn't want anything to do with our business, we thought maybe the second time around would give us an heir that would take over …
Saena: would that work if it's a girl?
Yayoi: yes, because we can just adopt a husband for her … but I do want to make sure that if we do go through that, we raise the child differently, so they don't turn out like that boy!
Saena: I wish you all the best in the future, whatever you choose to do
Yayoi: how about you, are you thinking about having another child with your partner, if all goes well between you two?
Saena: No, … I never imagined having another child … and I don't plan to in the future … Kyoko did express that she prefers to be an only child for the rest of her life, which is comforting
Worried, Yayoi asked: how about your partner?
Saena: we never talked about it … I might know more than I can tell, but he has his reasons for not being married with kids already by now
Yayoi: I see … well, you should have that conversation at some point, just to be on the same page … and honestly, you need to agree on it, so whenever family get involved, you have a straight answer for them … you don't want anyone to play around and change his mind

Saena: for the most part … she did say she misread me in the past, but she has gotten better at it as of recently … she could tell why I act the way I do without much context
Yayoi: well, she's a smart kid after all! … you're so lucky to have her!
Saena: I have to thank you for raising her the way you did … she's a great girl indeed
Yayoi: we didn't do much, … I couldn't even raise my son properly … anyhow … back to our main topic

(In Todoh's Apartment)
Todoh sat down as he studied his case that he needs to present to a judge soon … he also had his other papers for Miyasaki Nanami's case, and Kimiko's case on the side … current case in hand was a walk in the park, and he didn't think he needed too much for it … but he did want to be careful with it because he owed that much to his client
As he finished organizing his material, his phone started ringing, so he picked it up and saw that it was his mother calling … he silently cursed himself because he forgot to call her back … so he answered saying: hello, good evening …
Midori: finally! … hi! … how have you been, I've missed you!
Todoh: busy … how have you been? … I hope you and dad are doing well health-wise!

He secretly thought (I already get plenty of that from Saena and Kyoko)
Midori: your so mean!
Todoh: I'm sorry for being a bad son, but that won't change … anything else?
Midori: come to think of it … I called you before, but you never answered, why is that?
Todoh blushed as he cleared his voice, then said: I was busy!
Midori: I called you after work hours!
Todoh: work never ends … let's just say that
He thought (I won't tell you I was busy with my partner)
Midori sighed then said: I just wanted to check on you, it won't hurt to give me a few minutes to reassure me!
Todoh: some tasks can't be paused …
Midori: reading material isn't much of a task that you can't pause
Todoh: sometimes I'm with people and I can't just answer the phone … I have meetings and other important matters … do you really think I only bury myself in paperwork?!

Ren and Kyoko tried a few flavors that seemed interesting, while Yashiro stood next to them in agony
Kyoko: This taste's amazing!
Ren: couldn't agree more … the flavors work together very well
Kyoko: such an excellent combination!
Yashiro looked away as he felt like he was a third wheel to those two … although he knew they weren't in a relationship, and had yet to get a solid confirmation about Kyoko's feelings for Ren, he still felt like an outsider ruining a possible date
Ren: Yashiro, do you want to try this?
Yashiro thought (please pretend I'm not here and ignore me … focus on Kyoko!)
Ren: Yashiro?
Yashiro: I'm good … I already know what I want!
Ren: I see … so you're waiting for Maria to come before you order?
Yashiro remembered that Maria was also coming, so he sighed and said: sure thing!

The store owner: That's understandable, rose water isn't a popular ingredient in our cuisine … people actually find it odd, but I'm glad that people like this flavor … I never thought it would get this popular!
Ren: perhaps since social media became a big thing, people learned new things and became intrigued to try new flavors
The store owner: you're right! … social media has honestly helped me explore new flavors myself, and that alone helped our business grow and become successful … I owe it to my daughter, she's the one who introduced me to social media!
Kyoko: that's amazing! … you have such a great daughter!
The store owner: Thank you! … I'm honestly proud of her, she's a good girl! … I'm blessed to have such a daughter who is so helpful and supportive despite becoming a teenager … I've heard those years are so tough, but I'm lucky not to have a troublesome one
Ren nodded and smiled … thinking (my teenage years were dark, … I have nothing to say here)
Kyoko being a teenager herself smiled and said: I'm happy for you!
Yashiro spoke for the first time and said: your no different Kyoko-chan!
Ren nodded agreeing with his friend and manager
The store owner addressed Kyoko and said: you're just as young? … your mother must be proud
Kyoko: I try my best … I'm glad I have a good relationship with her!

The store owner agreed with Yashiro saying: I honestly find it hard to believe your one, you are so calm and collected, respectful and humble … I would never have guessed you're a teenager

The owner looked at the pair and said: I'm sorry! … you must be offended! … I don't often watch anything because I'm too busy with the business!
Ren: no worries, none taken … it's actually nice to be treated like normal people sometimes
Kyoko: I prefer it that way too … I don't mind people not recognizing me at all!
Feeling relieved, the owner smiled as she put her hand on her chest comforting herself

Kyoko: A friend recommended this place to me, so I thought I'd come to try it!
The owner: oh! … how nice of them to recommend our store!
The daughter felt a little silly asking the question … but was glad she didn't get scolded for asking such a stupid question … she never imagined she would meet any celebrities and especially not in their modest family business
Kyoko: my best friend and I love Ice cream … I'm really glad a friend recommended this place; I'm going to bring her over here when she's back … I'm sure she'll enjoy it as much as I did!
The owner: that's nice of you! … thank you … I'm glad you liked our flavors … we try to come up with new flavors, but we aren't always successful … sometimes we are behind and someone else would beat us to figuring out a new combination
Kyoko: I think it's fine because no matter how much we try, some people just think alike, … I think it would be cool if you come up with a similar flavor, but yours would be better … because even if the flavors have the same ingredients, the amounts differ, and that would make your recipe uniquely yours
The owner: you're not wrong … thank you for saying that … I'm always worried someone would accuse me of copying their flavors, so I do tend to stick to our most popular cultural flavors, so I don't get into much trouble … although recently even the west seems to be obsessed with our flavors … so I panic at times … but you put my mind at ease!

Hana: I still prefer Japanese Drama … but I like the different ideas they have!
Kyoko: interesting … I'm not really familiar with anything outside Japan, maybe a little of Sensei's work … but nothing else
Diana: you can try watching one if you'd like … Korean is different compared to Japanese, and I do find it harder to learn, so I stick with subtitles
Kyoko: what show would you recommend?
Diana: it depends on what you like, do you prefer comedy, action, Romance, or a mix of everything?
Kyoko: good questions … I never really watch much TV, to begin with … I watch sometimes just to support my friends … but I never thought about my preferences … I admit that I tend to like fairy tales
Diana: there is Cinderella and four knights … though its nothing like the Disney version
Kyoko: is it good?
Diana: hmm … my friend liked it … me, not so much … if you like princes and princesses then historic dramas might interest you, but they have a lot of violence and nothing like fairy tales either
Kyoko: then would come to mind when you think about a mix of everything?
Diana: let's see … one of the dramas I watch over and over again that had some comedy, romance, and action would be "Crash landing on you"
