Yachi suddenly felt nervous at this exact moment. Why would the captain of the Nekoma's Volleyball team suddenly send her a message?
The next summer training camp are days away. Perhaps there was an important information regarding to the training schedules for the managers? But she could have heard that from Takeda-sensei instead.
So why?
Yachi was a little nervous to read the message but knowing that ignoring the message would be rude so she decided to see what was going on.
From: Kuroo Tetsurou
Hello Yacchan! Are you having lunch right now?
Oh – this was a normal message. Yachi replied to his message stating that she was indeed having lunch with her friends and asked if he needed anything from her.
It didn't take more than a minute when she received a reply from him.
From: Kuroo Tetsurou
Take it easy, Yacchan~ I'm just wondering what you're doing right now hehe. How is it going lately? Are you doing well?
Yachi blinked her eyes when she reads the message. Perhaps Kuroo wanted to just talk to her? Yachi typed her reply instantly.
To: Kuroo Tetsurou
I'm doing well, Kuroo-san. How about you? Is Nekoma back on the weekly practice again?
From: Kuroo Tetsurou
I'm doing okay but now that I get to talk to you, my day is better. And yes, Nekoma is back on the weekly practice. How's your team? Practicing crazy tactics again?
Yachi crinkled her eyes when she reads the first sentence but she hesitated to write a proper response to his questions. The fight from the previous days was still fresh in her mind. She typed down a positive response.
To: Kuroo Tetsurou
We're currently on a short break but we'll resume to our practice this week.
From: Kuroo Tetsurou
Ah is that so? I was hoping that you'd share me more of Karasuno's tricks before we see you all again in the upcoming training camp.
To: Yachi Hitoka
I can't promise you that, Kuroo-san. Even if I'm their manager, I cannot tell 100% what the boys are doing most of the time.
From: Kuroo Tetsurou
And this is why it's so tricky to go against you all. Karasuno is so unpredictable.
Yachi couldn't help but smile at his message, agreeing that the team can be described as unpredictable bunch. She typed another message to reply back to him.
"Who are you texting?"
Yachi jumps at the sudden voice that appeared near her, almost making her phone dropped to the floor.
"Woah – what a reaction." Hiyori grinned and tried to lean to Yachi's side to catch a glimpse of her screen, "Now I'm curious – let's see~"
"A-ah. J-just a friend." Yachi replied, feeling flustered all of the sudden and hid the screen away from her friends.
"A friend or a boyfriend?" Hiyori asked with a giggle.
Yachi couldn't help but feel her cheeks heated by that speculation. There was a feeling of shyness bubbling up from her stomach that made her flustered.
"Just a friend, I promise." Yachi replied with a huff.
Hiyori giggled behind her mouth while Mikoto rolled her eyes. "Stop teasing her. So – " Mikoto suddenly whipped her face towards Yachi and asked, "Who is it?"
Yachi scratched her head, feeling a little bit awkward to explain it. "Someone I met from the training camp."
"You mean the volleyball training camp you went in Tokyo? Oh! It must be a guy!" Mikoto suddenly huffed excitedly as her eyes twinkled.
"What's he like? Handsome? Tall? Charming? Cute?" Hiyori began to ramble off about any descriptions she could think off in that moment and Yachi felt dizzy all of the sudden.
Why was she suddenly being interrogated by her friends right now?
"He is…indeed tall." That was all Yachi could say.
Seeing Yachi wearing a pressured expression, Mikoto chuckles lightly as she leaned back. "Just tall?"
"He is…also…nice."
"So he's just tall and nice?" Hiyori tilted her head.
Yachi stammered before she tries to explain more about Kuroo. "Um…he's very considerate person….and very good in volleyball. He is a third year captain from the other volleyball team that we practiced with during the training camp."
"A third year and he happens to be the captain too?! Woah, your game is really strong, Yacchan." Hiyori commented in awe.
"G-game?" Yachi repeated in confusion by Hiyori's words.
Mikoto laughs lightly at Yachi's reaction and asked, "By the way, how was the training camp? You went for a week which was pretty long."
Afterwards Yachi began to talk about her experience in Tokyo as a first year manager for the volleyball team. She talked about the large school, the very dependable managers and the hardworking members from many schools who made her learn about various things with volleyball.
Throughout her conversation, Yachi was laughing with her friends about certain funny incidents she went through during the training camp. Yachi's phone was left on its own on her desk, untouched, as she continues to talk with her friends until the end of lunch time.
When she puts her phone away for her next lesson, she reads the message on the screen from Kuroo.
I can't wait to see you again Yacchan :)
When the time for the volleyball practice was around again, Yachi found herself going back into the regular routine. As usual, she was the first one to get to the gym after she changed to some sports uniform. She turned on the gym's light after she wore her sports shoes and head inside to start getting ready for the practice.
After bringing the volleyball cart out, she heard some members joining the gym as they arrive in several groups.
"Hello, Yachi-chan. You're early as usual." Kiyoko greeted as she entered with Sugawara and Asahi.
"Good afternoon, senpai!" Yachi greeted them with her own bow as she heads over to the court with the cart.
"It's good to see you again, Yachi-chan. Are you doing well?" Sugawara came and looked at Yachi to see if she wore any other injuries. She heard from Daichi that Yachi got hurt from Hinata and Kageyama's fight and he was worried that it'll bring her some difficulties during school and practice.
Instead, Yachi replied with her own beaming smile to the third year setter. "I'm doing well, Sugawara-san. What about Sugawara-senpai?"
Sugawara smiled and patted Yachi's head, "Doing great. Don't push yourself too hard, Yachi-chan."
"Osu!" Yachi replied with a salute.
"Yachi-chan, please help me prepare the drinks." Kiyoko called out Yachi to get ready for practice.
Yachi saluted to Kiyoko's order and hops to her managerial duties straight away. In a few moments later, the rest of the volleyball members came to the gym and started to prepare for practice.
She sees Tanaka who instantly asked her about her condition and if she was alright. When she made sure to him that she was doing fine, Tanaka added, "I'm glad you're doing fine, Yachi-chan but please don't get in between fights in the future. You'll never know what happens if you get hurt badly one day."
"Yes, Tanaka-senpai." Yachi replied obediently. She kept receiving these similar words from her other senpai ever since that day but she knew that they were looking out for her. She truly feels like she is part of the team when they look out for her like this and she knew that she has to do well for their sake as well.
Tanaka huffed with a smile before he patted Yachi's head and went on to the court to do some warm ups with the other second year members.
Eventually everyone came to practice and coach Ukai started to give them some instructions for the day and how they are going to have some major changes in focusing on what they need to improve.
Yachi sees Hinata and Kageyama passing by each other without saying a word and a prickle of hurt buried in Yachi's chest when she felt the discomfort of seeing her friends creating a wall between each other.
She approached Hinata slowly and called out to him. "Um…Hinata."
When Hinata turned around, Yachi suddenly found it difficult to talk to him. She wanted to know whether he was doing alright and if the issue between him and Kageyama can be solved soon.
However what came out of her mouth was, "U-um, I was wondering if you were okay….you and Kageyama were….um…"
Hinata couldn't help but melt at the adorable expressions, she was genuinely worried about him and it made him feel… warm inside.
"I'm fine." He spoke with such calmness with a comforting smile.
Seeing Hinata responding positively, Yachi felt herself smiling back in return. "That's good. Um…please let me know if there are anything else I can help you with."
Hinata couldn't help but chuckle at her offer. With her hands fidgeting to her shirt and her cheeks rounded with a slight pout. Her expressions reminded him so much of his little sister that he can't help but poke her soft rosy cheek with his finger.
"Everything is okay, Yachi-chan. Come on, let's do our best for practice today!"
Yachi's eyes brightened to Hinata's cheer and she nodded enthusiastically. "Okay."
On the other side of the court, Kageyama narrowed his eyes at Hinata and Yachi as they were talking with each other brightly. He unconsciously hit the serving ball harder than he intended and almost hit Tanaka who was on the other side of the court.
"Oi – watch where you're hitting, Kageyama!" Tanaka yelled in reflex as he pointed towards Kageyama with an annoyed expression.
"Sorry, Tanaka-senpai." Kageyama replied with a bitter expression, finding himself embarrassed after being irritated when he saw Yachi with Hinata.
