Author's Note: Day 4 is...Casey!
The wind was knocked from Casey's lungs when he hit the ground and de-morphed. "Oof," he grunted. Unfortunately, the monster didn't give him time to morph again. The beast was on Casey when he was only halfway to his feet. He grabbed the red ranger by the front of his shirt and hauled him to his feet.
"Take this, Red Ranger!" the monster yelled, throwing Casey like a rag doll.
Casey landed in a pile of debris from a half destroyed building. Luckily most of his body took the brunt of the fall. However, it was still painful and it didn't protect his head. The back of his head hit something solid, sending a wave of pain and nausea through his body. Casey laid there, stunned in pain for a few seconds, staring at the sky. Slowly, he patted his body, finding some blood on his side and one of his legs. Still very slow, Casey sat up, wincing as the motion sent another wave of pain through his head. A warm sensation cased him to touch the back, wincing in pain at the slightest touch. His fingers came back with a thin layer of blood. 'Ouch,' he thought. 'I think I need a hand.'
After a moment of searching for his solar morphers, Casey thankfully found them right next him, and snatched them up. He put them on and opened the communication channel. Before he could say something though, he heard his team.
"-right, ugly!" Theo was saying. "It takes more than a couple hits to take out our red ranger."
"In fact, we're insulted you'd suggest otherwise," Lily agreed.
Casey shut off the communication channel. After a moment of hesitation, he swallowed, then slowly pushed himself to his feet. 'That's right,' he reminded himself. 'I'm their red ranger. I'm their leader. I'm not a cub anymore.' Once he was standing, he stumbled a little, but regained his balance quickly. 'I won't let my team down.' He took a deep breath. "Jungle beast, spirit unleashed!" Thankfully, the initial power surge of morphing drove out most of the pain. His senses, which were normally slightly heightened, cleared to their normal levels and the pain dulled to an annoyance. At that moment, Casey saw the monster get giant. He took another deep breath. "Call to the beast inside, free the tiger!"
A surge of energy pulled from his body, almost taking Casey off his feet. He powered through though and leaped into the air. He landed in the cockpit of the Megazord between Theo and Lily.
"Where you been, Casey?" Theo asked.
"Just catching a quick cat nap," Casey joked. "Now let's get this guy."
Thankfully, the fight was short, mostly due to the assistance from Dom and RJ. When he was back on the ground, Casey was tired, but not abnormally so. However, when he de-morphed, he nearly fell from the sudden exhaustion that hit his body. It was like a weight trying to drag him down. Casey stumbled a few times, but managed to get his feet under himself again.
"Are you ok?" RJ asked in concern.
"Yeah…totally fine," Casey replied as he stood. "Just a little tired."
"Are you too tired to finish your shift?"
"No! No, I'll be fine. Think I need to change my clothes though." He gestured to the small splotches of blood on his current uniform. "Customers probably won't appreciate this."
"Hmmm… You never know," Lily shrugged as they started walking. "Maybe customers will take pity on you and give you extra tips."
"Or assume RJ's beating him in the back," Dom joked. RJ swiped at him, but the white ranger dodged, causing him to run into Casey. Casey stumbled and fell on the ground, sending a new wave of nausea through him when he hit the ground.
"If anyone's beating Casey it's clearly you," Theo said to Dom, stopping briefly to grab Casey's arm and haul him back to his feet. "Come on, Strong Tiger. Let's get back before Fran murders us for leaving her alone for so long."
As much as he appreciate the hand, the sudden change in position sent another wave of nausea through him. Casey swallowed back some bile. 'I can make it,' he thought. 'The rest of my shift isn't that long. I can make it. I have the strength of the tiger.'
By the time they got back to Jungle Karma Pizza though, Casey felt like like a strong tiger and more like a sick cub. 'But I'm not a cub,' he thought stubbornly as he changed his clothes. Bending over to put on his pants caused him to end up on the floor, staring up at the ceiling for a minute. Once everything stopped spinning, he struggled into his shirt.
"Casey!" Dom yelled from the bottom of the stairs. "Let's go!"
"Coming!" Casey sighed and took a deep breath before forcing himself to his feet. He slipped his shoes back on, then grabbed his apron and hat out of his hammock. Thankfully, his hat hid the dried blood on the back of his head. In the adrenaline fueled after moments of a battle, none of his teammates had noticed, but he was pretty certain a customer might. "It's just one shift. One shift. How hard could it be?"
Only five minutes into his shift though, Casey was starting to doubt his decision. Normally he didn't mind the chaos and noise of the pizza parlor. On the contrary, it energized him. He loved it. Today however, he was only working for ten minutes before the dull pain in his head started pounding. Over the course of his shift the pain slowly started creeping its way forward from the back. Casey was forced to smile through the pain, only allowing himself to grimace when his back was turned. The constant movement jarred his head. A few times, he had to stop, leaning on the counter when he got too dizzy.
"Casey, are you ok?" Fran asked, concerned.
"Yeah, I'm fine, Fran," he replied.
"Are you sure? Because you look kind of pale."
"I'm alright. Just tired. It's been busy."
"Oh, I know."
The room finally stopped spinning, so Casey took a deep breath and continued working. Unfortunately, the pounding in his head was only made worse by all the noise. People talking, plates clattering, little kids and babies screeching. Everything seemed to be dialed up to 11.
"I- I'm sorry," Casey apologized to a customer, blinking away the pain. "Can- Can you repeat your order?"
"One Gorrilla-Gorilla Pizza and a side of cheesy bread," the man replied impatiently. "You do speak English, don't you?"
"Uh…right. Sorry, sir. That'll be right out." Casey walked away, furiously scribbling on his notepad. He slapped the ticked on the window, then turned around. 'Uh…what do I need to do now… I…uh… I think I have a table waiting for drinks? Yes, waters!' Casey quickly made up some waters and carried them over to the table he'd just been at. "Here are the waters you asked for, sorry for the wait."
"Well, I definitely think you owe someone an apology, since we didn't order waters." The man glared at Casey. "We asked for lemonades."
"Lemonades… Right… I'm sorry. I'll get those for you as soon as I can."
The man grunted. "And don't think you're getting a tip after this."
'Of course not,' Casey thought, irritably. After a few mental gymnastics, he figured out which table had the waters. Thankfully, they were a bunch of teenagers more concerned with each other than him. Casey went back behind the counter to get the lemonades, only to be waved over by Dom.
"Casey!" he hissed through the window, waving to the red ranger.
"What's up?" Casey asked, briefly closing his eyes against the pain.
"What's this order?" Dom held up the ticket.
"You can't just read it?"
Dom frowned and looked at Casey, puzzled. "Read it? Case, it's just a scribble."
"Oh…uh…" Casey ground his teeth as he focused, but the pain was making it hard to think. "It's….Gorrilla-Gorrila pizza."
"Thanks."
Casey took a moment to steady himself, then finished getting the lemonades. Unfortunately, his hands shook as he grabbed the glasses and split some on the table. "Ahh…sorry." He grabbed the towel from his apron to quickly wipe it clean. "Your pizza will be right out." As he walked away, the room swayed, causing him to nearly stumble into Theo.
"Whoa, watch it," Theo warned him.
"Sorry, Theo." Casey made a beeline for the counter so he could lean on it. He just barely made it, leaning on it heavily; praying the room would stop spinning. 'I can make it. I can do this. Come on, Casey, pull yourself together. Do you want them to start thinking about you like a cub again? Like child?' Casey took a deep breath, then opened his eyes again. His head still pounded against his skull and the loud noises were like knives piercing his ears. But he pushed through, forcing himself to keep working. Thankfully, the constant stream of customers seemed to have slowed down. He finally had an empty table for the first time in what felt like hours. Clearing the table was especially painful because every clink of cups, silverware, or plates made him cringe.
'Were getting through it,' Casey told himself. 'We're getting through it. Just keep going. You're the red ranger. You got this.'
"Order up, Casey!" Dom called.
Casey had to bite the inside of his lip as he carried the pizza. He was so tired that his arm shook. In order to not drop it, he had to set the pizza down before talking. "Here's your Gorilla-Gorrila, pizza. Enjoy."
"Excuse me," the man said, grabbing Casey's arm before he could leave. "Aren't you forgetting something?"
"Huh?"
"Jesus, our cheesy bread. Idiot."
"Sorry. Sorry. I'll go…see about that…" The room started spinning again, especially since Casey had to spin around so fast to face the man. He stumbled a little, then had to stagger back as a young child darted right past his feet. Casey's breath caught in his throat as the pain in his head spiked. Completely unnoticed by him, when he'd stepped back, his hand hit a pitcher of water which spilled on the table and clattered onto the floor. The noise was like an ice pick being hammered into his head. He grit his teeth as the noise seemed to grow even louder. The lights were too bright, forcing him to squint. When he got to the counter, neither Dom or RJ was at the window, but he really didn't want to yell. So he went into the kitchen. "Dom… You- You forgot my cheesy bread."
"Cheesy bread?" Dom asked, back turned to Casey. "You didn't tell me you had an order of bread."
"No… Dom- I- There was a cheesy bread…" Casey grunted as another spike of pain hit him and the room spun. He stumbled and caught himself on the table. "I need it… Customer's…. Angry…. Called me….an idiot… I'm just doing my best…" He closed his eyes and forcibly rubbed the heel of his hand against his forehead, trying to relieve the pain there.
"Wait, Casey," RJ said, stepping around the fridge door, "did you just say a customer called you an idiot?"
"Huh? Did I?" Casey was so confused. 'Why did I come in here again?'
"Dude," Theo said, coming into the kitchen. "What the hell, Casey? You just left that mess and made me clean it up?"
RJ look between Theo and Casey, the latter of which looked very pale and lost. "Casey that's not like you," he said. "Are you feeling ok?"
" 'm fine, RJ…" Casey replied, waving his hand at RJ (or the general direction he thought RJ was in). " 'm fine… Just… need… I- I need…" Casey stood up straight and the world tilted. He tried to grab something, but only managed to grab a bowl of dough. The bowl flipped over, spilling dough and flour on the table and floor. Casey didn't have time to react though, because his legs gave out and he blacked out before he even hit the floor.
RJ felt like he was watching Casey in slow motion. As soon as he saw the red ranger's hand hit the bowl he moved. Despite being the farthest one from him, RJ moved quick enough to catch Casey before he could hit his head off the floor. "Casey?" he said, shaking him a little. "Casey?"
"What happened?" Dom asked, running over with Theo.
"I don't know. Theo, you've been on the floor with him. Did he seem off?"
"I- I don't know…" Theo replied, suddenly ashamed to admit he'd been too busy with his own work to notice what was going on with Casey.
"Hey, what's that?" Dom asked. Casey's hat had fallen off, giving them a good look at something on the back of his head. "RJ, is that blood?"
RJ's heart almost stopped when he saw the red tinge to Casey's light hair. "I- I think so." He swallowed. "Casey must've gotten hurt in the battle."
"Didn't that monster say he took Casey out?"
"Must've hit his head…" RJ took a deep breath, then took control of the situation. "Theo, tell Fran to take your tables. Lily should be back from delivery soon, so she can take Casey's place. You're back here now. Dom will be back in a few. Dom, help me get Casey upstairs." Theo nodded and ran off to tell Fran about the position changes while RJ and Dom awkwardly carried Casey up the stairs.
"Geez this kid is long," Dom muttered. "You gotta stop feeding him, RJ."
"With the frame he has? No way." When they made it up the stairs, Dom started moving toward Casey's hammock, but RJ shook his head. "Let's put him in my room." They carried Casey into RJ's room and set him down gently on the bed. "Thanks Dom, can you grab me a bottled water and the first aid kit before you go back down?"
"When exactly do we get worried about him waking up?"
RJ frowned. "Let's not focus on that for now." He sat on the edge of the bed and gently turned Casey's head to the side so he could inspect the wound. When he started probing it though, Casey moaned. "Casey?" Casey's eyes fluttered and he threw himself toward the edge of the bed. Before RJ could even talk, Casey vomited. He threw himself back on the pillows, once again unconscious.
At that moment, Dom walked back in and his eyes widened. "What happened?"
"Just give me that stuff and go back downstairs." RJ took the water and first aid kit, then shooed Dom away. Moving as gently as possible, he turned Casey head again, then wet some gauze to lean the wound. This time, Casey stayed unconscious as he worked. 'Thank god the wound is already closed,' RJ thought in relief. 'Ranger healing is a hell of a thing. This must've been a hard hit. To have a wound like this…Casey probably didn't have his helmet on.' RJ suddenly felt sick at the thought of how much this must've hurt when de-morphed. 'How did none of us notice?' Satisfied Casey wasn't bleeding to death, he set to cleaning up the vomit.
