Volume 4-2 EX: Picking Up The Pieces.
The doctor arrived and was currently examining Ruby and her condition making sure that she was well enough to move. The doctor performed some of the basic trials of health in which she passed easily.
"Alright Miss Ross. Follow my finger without moving your head if you please." The doctor said holding up a finger as he slowly moved it side to side. Her eyes followed the doctors finger no problem before stopping as he made his final diagnosis.
"Well doc. How is she?" Raven asked.
"Well she's perfectly healthy that's a good thing. However I recomend her getting some excercise. Staying in bed for three days is not healthy for anyone." The doctor said.
"Very well. I'll make sure on that." Raven said.
"Oh I'm sure you will no doubt about that. Now if you'll excuse I must be leaving." The doctor said as he left the room.
"Guess I can finally get out of this bed." Ruby said as took off the covers and got out of bed.
"I'll let you change into something more fitting." Raven said as she left the bedroom to give her niece some privacy as she went downstairs.
Tai was waiting at the bottom of the stairs for her as he looked up.
"So I take it went well." Tai said.
Raven nodded "Yeah. Everything went well. Other than she's going to need to excercise for a few days to get herself back in shape. Probably more after using her silver eyes." Raven added.
"Yeah I remember when Summer used it for the first time. She didn't have any strength in her afterwards." Tai said.
"Well... Ruby's different. I'm sure she'll bounce back from this. Besides she'll need something to eat first." Raven said as she went back into the kitchen to make something up for Ruby. Though it seemed that Neo had the same idea as she was already in the kitchen making up some breakfast for Ruby with Yang waiting for her sister at the table.
"Thinking ahead huh." Raven said to Neo as she had a plate of eggs ,toast, and a glass of milk for Ruby.
"So Ruby's okay." Yang said in wonder.
"Yeah she's fine. Other than the fact she'll need to build her strength back up for about three days. That is something I can put both you and possibly Mercury on to help her with." Raven said as she looked around noticing that the two of them were gone.
"Where are they anyway?" Raven asked.
"Oh Emerald said about helping dad with his garden and Mercury is making sure no grimm are around." Yang said.
Not long they heard footsteps coming from behind her seeing Zwei zip past her heading straight for Neo rubbing his head at her. Ruby wasn't wearing her normal attire but decided on a more casual outfit.
She is now wearing a simple black sleeveless shirt that showed off her toned arms and simple blue jeans with her basic shoes. Around her neck is a silver chain with her rose emblem on it.
Yang was first to hug Ruby as she embraced her "Yang c'mon you just hugged me like twenty minutes ago." Ruby said trying to wiggle herself free from her older sisters grasp.
"I know but everyone was rather worried you know. Even had Zwei scared you know." Yang said before removing herself from Ruby.
"Now c'mon you need to eat." She added as Ruby went to the table with putting the plate in front of her.
"Oh thanks." Ruby thanked her as she dug into her meal for a moment as if something was bugging her and Raven knew just what that was.
"I know your sad right now Ruby. Especially about what happened to Beacon and Vale. Everything is such a mess right now that everyone is being effected by it." Raven replied.
Yang scoffed "Yeah everyone but stupid Atlas." Yang said.
"Yang don't start." Raven added slightly glaring at her daughter.
"It's true." Yang said as she pulled out her scroll and brought up an article she found and showed them.
"In light of the events that happened in Vale that was caused by not only the White Fang but the Atlas military and their robotic soldiers. However in asking for questions to this by General Ironwood he proclaims that it was more than likely the terrorists or Roman Torchwich that had hacked into their machines. He also has no further comment on the current arrest of Rina Trill other than that Remnant would be better off without this inconvience." The news lady reported as Yang ended the article.
"Okay that does sound like Atlas only worries about themselves." Ruby added more importantly Neo crossed her arms angrily about the part mentioning Rina about being an inconvinence.
"Even if you have a point Yang, everyong else is going to be affected by this. I won't be surprise if their is an embargo on dust coming and going from Atlas soon." Raven replied.
"Yeah I mean someone on the council will have to approve that." Yang said.
"Unless your part of the controlling the dust routes yourself then the council won't be able to say anything." Raven replied.
Neo didn't want to hear anymore of the conversation and decided to head outside probably to blow off steam which didn't go unnoticed by Yang and Ruby.
"Um... is she going to be okay? She seems rather ticked." Yang added.
Raven paused a moment before speaking "Well... let's just say a lot of things happened to her that shouldn't happen." Raven replied.
"And that means what exactly?" Yang asked.
"While you and Ruby were still asleep me and Neo well sort of talked in a way. Through sign lanuage though was how she could talk me. She told me that she, Roman, and Rina were stealing to make a living but they weren't expecting to get involved in something far bigger than them." Raven started.
"And that includes what?" Ruby asked.
"Protection. Three people needed protection from someone I think you two already know about." Raven answered.
Ruby knew who she was talking about as she answered.
"Salem right." Ruby answered which got a confusing look from Yang.
"Okay... who's Salem?" Yang questioned.
Even Raven was hesitant about speaking about that woman as she knew just how dangerous this woman was and how far she would go. Raven sat down at the table before she explained.
"You ever thought where the grimm come from? Why they act the way they do? How they were even created?" Raven questioned in which the two of them shook their heads.
"Salem... is not just someone you idly talk about. Just speaking her name... still sends chills down my spine of just how... powerful she is." She added.
"So wait this one woman commands countless grimm. How is that even possible she would have to be some kind of witch or something right." Yang added.
"You're not wrong." Raven said as they got their attention.
"Imagine your worst nightmares coming to life and taking form into a woman who would want nothing more than to destroy all of humanity on the planet." Raven added. The image in their minds only made them shiver from just putting that to an image.
"That is Salem. I hope that one day you two will never have to see her. Trust me it's not pretty." Raven replied. The three of them were silent after a minute but Yang let out a breath before getting up from her seat.
"Well... I got things to do. You know trying to fix up an android girl and stuff like that." Yang said as she was heading out of the kitchen. Ruby immediately perked up from hearing this and almost knew who she was talking about.
"Wait. Penny is here on Patch." Ruby replied.
"Yeah. Em and Merc managed to save her body from Amity. Though she's currently deactivated and we're trying to repair her. Want to come help?" Yang asked.
Before Ruby could answer Raven spoke up again "Can I talk to Ruby a moment. She'll meet you in the workshop." Raven said as Yang nodded before heading out.
Ruby wasn't sure what her aunt wanted to talk about as she turned to face her.
"Is everything okay auntie?" Ruby asked curiously.
Raven sat down at the table before intertwinding her fingers together before she spoke.
"Do you remember anything that happened at Beacon? Anything at all?" Raven asked.
Ruby breath hitched for a moment not sure what to say on the matter. Though she jumbled through her memories trying to remember what had happened three days ago when she unconcious. Then something was coming to her before she spoke.
"During the attack... my team made it toward Vale and we separated to cover more ground." Ruby started recalling what had happened.
"I think Yang and Weiss headed with Pepper to cover a part of Beacon making sure it was evacuated. Me, Blake, and Iona went toward the front entrance after we got a call from Jaune that Pyrrha and Cinder were going to fight someone that was fighting Ozpin." She continued.
"Then when we got to the entrance... Fox and Yatsu... they stopped us from getting inside. Something about not wanting us to intervene but Yatsu said that they wanted... me." Ruby replied which made Raven fingers tighten.
"I got past them while Blake and Iona kept them busy. I got to the elevator but it was already destroyed so I had to take the stairs. It took me quite a bit before getting up their to the top of the tower but by the time I got up their..." Ruby paused a moment remembering the scene of Pyrrha falling from the top of the tower.
"It... happened so fast... next thing I know a bright light blinded my eyes and... I think that's when I past out." Ruby finished.
"Aside from Pyrrha. Did you see anyone else up their? Anyone noticable?" Raven asked.
Ruby went through her memories again trying to put something that she saw. However she then remembered something before the blinding light that she saw. To be more correctly someone she saw.
"Coco Adel. I saw her up their with Pyrrha. She... she's the one that killed her and Cinder." Ruby replied.
"So the leader of Team CFVY along with Fox and Yatsuhachi. They must be Salem's agents." Raven replied as she then cupped her chin.
"But what are they up to?" Raven asked herself.
However a curious thought came to Ruby's mind as she started thinking too about the events that happened at Beacon. More importantly the purpose of it all.
"I think they had their own agenda that we weren't aware about but they couldn't pull off something this huge of an attack on Beacon and Vale. My bet is that they had help." Ruby said as she pulled out her scroll and looked up an article about the attack and noticed something that confirmed her thoughts.
"Yeah take a look at this." Ruby said showing Raven.
The article read "Their were mulitple arrests that occured mainly the arrests of White Fang soldiers that aided the assault on Vale and Beacon Academy. The ring leader Adam Taurus is still at large."
"Hm... that would be the case. Though convincing the Fang to attack is an effort in its self to pull off. Especially if its a human trying to convince them." Raven added.
"Well it must've worked cause we saw a few of them trying to kill us before we got to the entrance of the academy. Plus not to mention they must've caused the destruction of the CCT Tower. Allowing only local communication to be used and not nationwide." Ruby said.
"Why aim for the tower? Dominance maybe?" Raven questioned as Ruby only shrugged.
"Who know's? Plus with Blake's ex-boyfriend still out their who knows what he could do." Ruby said.
Raven only blinked a few times but didn't even bother questioning about the ex part as she got a good idea how that part happened.
"For now all we can is lay and wait for the time being. Cause if the White Fang are involved more than likely they have another target in mind all things considered." Raven added.
"Really and what target would that be?" Ruby asked not knowing.
"Well my bet is that they want to take down the CCT Towers. Since they've destroyed the one in Vale. It would make since to go to Vacuo but given it's tercherous terrian and grimm they wouldn't risk losing more men. Atlas is out of the question since they don't have any means of air travel so that only leaves..." Raven paused a moment.
"Mistral." Ruby finished.
"Yes. More correctly Haven Academy. Though with the amount of arrest on their men their forces have dwindled a little. Maybe we don't have to worry about them for quite some time." Raven said as she got up from her seat.
"Now I think Yang said something about helping with Penny." She added which got Ruby's attention.
"Yeah I'll go see about that." Ruby replied as she left the kitchen and headed right outside toward the workshop. Now alone in the house Raven thought it be good to go find Tai and see what he was up too as Zwei found a spot on the couch and lay down and take a nap.
=RWBY=
Ruby practically sprinted to the workshop but had to stop herself so that she didn't run into the door. She opened said door and saw that Yang was already waiting for her but she mainly looked at the condition of Penny's body. It was all roughed up from the last fight with Rina as she saw some lacerations all around the body even though they were minor. Though Penny was currently deactivate as her eyes were closed.
Ruby walked over to her to fully get a look of the damage.
"I'm guessing you haven't opened her up yet." Ruby said.
"Nope. She's an android but I'm not wanting to screw up and break her so having an extra set of hands would help." Yang replied.
Ruby went over to her workbench and grab some tools along with a connector cable that seems to plug in to her scroll. Though it was trying to fing a connecting port on Penny.
Yang looked toward Pennys neck and she found what looked like a port to plug into.
"Ruby over here. You can plug your scroll into her here." Yang said as Ruby went over and did just that as first plugged the one end into her scroll before plugging the other end into the port.
Almost immediately her scroll came online as it began downloading Penny skemactics on her scroll. Half of her body was covered in red meaning their were problems in those areas.
"Wow... that's a lot of problems. Where do we even start?" Ruby asked.
"How about the leg than work our way up to the torso. Should be a little easier that way." Yang suggested. Ruby nodded as the two of them got to work on trying to fix up Pennys body hopefully without any problems.
About an hour into fixing Penny... there were already problems that they were trying to solve as they were still trying to fix the leg as Yang let out a frustrated sigh.
"How could fixing a leg be such a problem!? We're not even close to finding a solution." Yang said frustrated.
Ruby felt the same way as she was going over the components but as she was doing this she noticed something that was on one of the components that made Ruby groan.
"Yang... I think I found the issue. All of Pennys components are Atlas technology." Ruby said.
Yang came over to confirm what her sister was talking about as she groaned.
"No wonder we couldn't figure it out. Atlas tech is way too complicated." Yang stated rubbing her head.
"So what do we do now? If her entire body is Atlas tech then we're going to have a difficult time trying to fix her." She added.
Ruby looked at Pennys body trying to figure out what would be the best option. They don't exactly have the tools that would require to fix her at this point. The only option was to somehow get her to Atlas to repair her.
"I guess right now... their's not much we can do. If Pennys body is all Atlas technology then only someone from Atlas would be able to fix her." Ruby said.
"Yeah you got a point their. Can't do much without the tools." Yang replied.
Though that did give Ruby an idea as she grabbed her scroll that was still connected to Pennys neck. Ruby tapped her scroll as she figured that Penny's A.I. wouldn't be too badly damaged. So she decided to try to download Penny's A.I. to her scroll.
Yang noticed what Ruby was doing "What are you doing now sis?" Yang asked.
"Well... I figured that Penny has an A.I. system so I thought we could at least save that." Ruby added.
Yang smirked at this well knowing what her sister was trying to do "Well... give it a shot." Yang said with a smile.
With an affirmed nod Ruby tapped her scroll and began to download Penny's A.I. into her scroll as a progress bar appeared on her screen. Though it looked like it was going to take awhile for it to download.
"This could take awhile. Maybe an hour at best." Ruby said.
"Well how about we do some of those excercises that mom talked about. Then we'll come back and check on it." Yang suggested.
Ruby nodded setting her scroll near Penny's body so that it doesn't fall over as the two of them left the workshop as the download continued.

Outside the house Emerald was currently on her knees working on Tai's small flower garden as she was pulling the weeds around them very carefully to not hurt the flowers. Though she had a rather solemn look on her face as she looked at one of the flowers in Tai's garden. It was a rose flower but not like the traditional as the petals seemed to overlap each other in the center while also faning out on the outside.
Just seeing the flower did bring a few tears to Emeralds eyes but she quickly wiped them away and focused on task.
"Hey." Tai's voice rang out behind her as she turned and noticed he was carrying a tray with a glass pitcher of what looks like lemonade and two glasses on it filled with the liquid.
Tai carefully knelt down with the tray in hand as he was know on his knees right beside her.
"Thought you could use a drink. Made it fresh." Tai said.
Emerald took her glass meant for her and took a drink. It was rather refreshing to her as she sighed satisfied.
"Thank you." She thanked.
"Anytime." Tai returned her thanks with a smile before looking at his flower garden and was rather impressed at the work.
"Wow. Looks much better than it was. Nicely done." Tai added giving her praise.
"It was nothing really. I used to do this back at the oprhanage." Emerald said which did peek some interest from Tai.
"It was rough their huh? Never knowing if your going to be adopted by someone." Tai replied.
Emerald seemed to huff at that "Yeah guess so. Never really crossed my mind." Emerald stated.
"Okay... did you ever wanted to be adopted?" Tai asked. However she didn't answer him about it as she was rather relucent on the matter.
"Let's just say... it's rather complex. Something I'd rather not talk about." Emerald said as she continued pulling weeds. However Tai caught noticed that her gaze never left the flower she was staring at.
"You know that flower right there. That's one of the families favorite flowers. Its a Dark Night Hybrid Tea Rose. Every day I would come out here and make sure that it was well watered and groomed." Tai said as the red eyed girl stared at him.
"Yeah I know grooming a flower does sound rather strange but if you take care of it well enough it'll bloom just like that. Heck I actually proposed to Raven in front of this flower." Tai stated as Emerald only listened.
"And from what I'm guessing... this flower meant something to you too back at the orphanage huh?" Tai said as her eyes widen a moment before they drooped again as she nodded.
"This... was one of Cinder's favorites but she never really had a green thumb like how I did. So she asked me to help her take care of it from time to time. Eventually I taught her how to treat flowers and got the hang of it. She felt proud every day whenever she treated it like she felt accomplished. Then... when the fire came and burnt the whole orphanage down... she was devasted." Emerald replied before let out an angry huff.
"That was when we were taken to Salem and did her bidding. Our childhood... was gone." She finished.
Tai could only imagine what the three of them had to go through and what Salem did to them.
Emerald refocused on finishing weeding around the flowers as Tai decided to help her out not wanting to press it even further and not wanting to make her uncomfortable. Raven wasn't too far as she looked on at the two as it would be wise not to bother them. Though she wondered where Neo went to. Though she looked up and noticed a pair of legs hanging from the roof which gave her an idea.

Neo wasn't in a happy mood as she looked at her scroll reading an article about finding a certain airship that Roman was on.
"Reports are spewing in about the supply ship that was destroyed during the attack. However Specialists are saying that it the supply ship was destroyed via self detenation. The ship was in complete shambles when it was found along with what appears to be a body that atopsy couldn't identify. However the only thing that was recovered was a hat with a red feather in it. The owner of the hat can retrieve the item at the news station on the outskirts of Patch." The article stated.
Neo frowned at this as she knew that the hat belonged to her adopted father Roman as that was probably the only thing that was left of him. She would want nothing more than to have a piece of him with her to remind her of the good times.
"Kinda lonely up here huh?" Raven said behind her with made her slightly jumped seeing that black haired woman behind her as she leaned again the chimny.
"It's a great view up here am I right." Raven added.
"It's fine I guess." Neo signed though she still had a rather angry look on her face like she was plotting something.
Raven noticed the article that she was reading about "I'm guessing they found his body huh?" She asked.
Neo only nodded in response her hands slightly shaking.
"If you're planning on some kind of revenge or something then I'd forget it if I were you." Raven said surprisingly which got Neo to look at her.
"Don't tell me you weren't thinking about taking revenge on who did this. Trust me revenge doesn't do anyone any good even if you think its for the right reasons. You'll do something that you don't want to do. I don't think your the kind of girl that would kill someone would you." Raven said.
Neo glared at her angrily but deep down she knew that Raven was right. Roman always that they never kill unless it's absolutely nessecary.
"Though I get the feeling you want something that means something to you." Raven said.
Neo nodded as she pointed to the top of her hair like tipping of a hat as Raven got the message.
"Romans hat. Was that the only item recovered?" She asked. Neo nodded again.
Raven knew what she meant. She wanted a memory of Roman to stay near her.
"Well shall we go get it. The news station is on the outskirts and I'll take you out their and we'll be out in no time." Raven stated.
Neo thought about it for a moment but she then nodded as it would be nice to have his hat to remember him by. The two of them got off the roof top and started to head toward town to retrieve what belonged to Neo.
Meanwhile in a practice field Yang threw a punch at Ruby but surprisingly she caught Yang's punch as she threw one of her own only end up with the same result with Yang catching her as the two sisters were in a stalemate.
Mercury however was watching the both of them and monitoring their auras. Yang so far used up twenty five percent of her aura while Ruby had used up thirty so by aura count Yang was winning but just barely.
The two jumped away from each other to create some space between them. Almost immediately Yang lunged upward trying to see if her kicks would be more effective. Remembering what Pepper taught her she waited until Yang's leg got close and then she grabbed at Yang's ankle and under her knee as she tossed Yang over her shoulder causing Yang to hit the ground rather hard knocking out five percent of her aura.
Yang got up dusting herself off from the impact "Nice counter sis. Looks like Peps training really sunk in huh." Yang commented.
"Yeah I guess so. Ready for another go?" Ruby asked.
"Oh you know it. Let's see what else she taught you." Yang said getting back into her fighting stance.
Ruby readied herself as the two of them circled each other but this time it was Ruby who charged first leading with her left foot as she rushed at Yang. The two sisters traded blows with each other as they each managed to land a blow on the other.
Mercury was watching their auras closely as they both started to depleat. Though who's aura would run out first. The both of them threw a punch as Rubys fist connected with Yangs left cheek but Yangs fist also connects with Ruby's right cheek as Mercury winced at just from the impact as he looked at their aura levels.
Yang and Ruby fell to the ground after taking punches from each other breathing rather hard as they laid next to each other.
"Okay... now that hurt..." Ruby panted.
"Yeah... think for once my jaws going to be sore..." Yang panted as well.
Mercury walked over to them as he knelt down to them.
"Wondering who won that huh?" He asked.
"Duh. I totally won that round." Yang boasted declaring herself the victor.
"No way I had you. I won that ." Ruby countered.
Mercury only swet dropped "Actually... you both lost." He declared which made the two of the them sit up.
"What no way!? Let me see that!" Yang said as Mercury showed them on his scroll. Truth be told both both of their auras were both in the red even though separate by just a percent of aura it was considered a tie.
"We... tied." Ruby said completely baffled by this.
"Huh... guess that mean I'm going to need to do some training to if I tied with you sis." Yang added as she laughed a little but winced as she rubbed her jaw.
"Yeah that's sore." Yang said.
Mercury chuckled as he shook his head "Alright you two. How about taking a break?" He asked as they both nodded getting up from the ground and walked back to the house.
At the workshop Ruby's scroll was still downloading the A.I. from Penny as the progress bar was now at fifty percent and slowly climbing as it could still take sometime before it would be complete. Suddenly it jumped twenty five percent as it was now a three forths completed, then to eighty nine percent, before finally filling the progess bar to one hundred percent as her scroll began installing the A.I.
Her scroll then read 'Installation Complete' as two bright emerald eyes stared outside of the scroll wondering where she was.
F3: That ends chapter 2. Won't Ruby get a rather nice surprise when she gets her scroll. Also Neo and Raven heading to the outskirts to retrieve the hat belonging to Roman.
