Chapter 25: Sisters

A/N: NSFW

Jane and Maura: June, Present Day

Jane paused outside the bathroom door. All four kids were at school, and they still had another two hours before they were going to meet Cailin for lunch. Jane could hear Maura humming off-key in the shower through the closed door. It had only been a little over 36 hours since they finally took that next step, crossing the line they had been dancing around for so long, yet Jane couldn't get enough. All she wanted to do was spend all day in bed exploring this new aspect of their relationship.

Unfortunately, they hadn't had time to talk about what all of this meant. She knew this was real – that this was it for both of them. She didn't have any doubts about that, but if there was one thing she had learned over the past seven years it was how important communication was. Therefore, she was pretty sure they needed to sit down and talk about this before they continued to fall into bed together.

On the other hand, the pull to live out one of her fantasies was incredibly strong. Besides, the shower wasn't the bed, right?

Jane stripped her clothes off, dropping them in the hamper in the closet before she slowly opened the bathroom door. Maura was facing away from her, letting the water run over her face. Jane paused to watch her through the glass for a few moments before she stepped into the shower behind Maura.

Jane reached out, gently placing her hands on Maura's hips as she leaned forward to place a soft kiss on Maura's shoulder, but before her lips met skin, Maura jumped violently. Jane instinctively gripped Maura's hips harder to keep her from falling, but this seemed to be the wrong move as Maura roughly pulled away from her and spun around.

"Jane!" Maura gasped, her hand flying to her chest to cover her rapidly beating heart.

"I'm sorry," Jane said quickly, taking a step back and holding her hands up. "I didn't mean to scare you. I just…I…" Jane stumbled over her words. Jane's eyes were wide in a mixture of surprise and fear.

"Jane, no, it's okay," Maura said, tentatively stepping towards Jane. She gave Jane a soft smile before gently placing her hands on Jane's hips. Jane let her hands fall to grip Maura's upper arms. "I just wasn't expecting you. I guess I'm still jumpy after everything." Even if she couldn't help it, Maura felt bad for jumping away from Jane. She still wasn't used to sharing space with anyone other than a toddler, and she wasn't used to not having to constantly be on alert for threats.

"I'm sorry," Jane said again. "I shouldn't have…"

"No, Jane, you should have…I'm glad you did," Maura cut her off. Maura leaned up on her tiptoes to give Jane a gentle, loving kiss. Jane let her body relax into the kiss, and a rush of arousal shot through her body when Maura closed the distance between them, pressing their bodies together.

Jane wrapped her arms around Maura's shoulders as she ran her tongue across Maura's bottom lip. Maura instantly responded, her own hands roaming over Jane's back as she parted her lips, taking Jane's tongue into her mouth. She let out a low moan, and her hips bucked involuntarily against Jane's as their tongues slowly danced together. Maura felt a rush of wetness between her legs.

"You said you wanted to try one of my fantasies," Jane panted out as Maura sucked roughly on her earlobe before moving to place open-mouthed kisses down the column of her neck.

"Mmmmm, and what exactly is your fantasy?" Maura asked seductively as she continued her trail of kisses down Jane's shoulder, across her clavicles, and up her other shoulder.

In response to Maura's question, Jane swiftly grabbed Maura's ass and lifted her. Maura shrieked in laughter as her legs automatically wrapped around Jane's waist and her back was pressed against the wall.

"To watch you come by my hand while droplets of water trail over your beautiful breasts," Jane whispered into her ear.

Maura groaned loudly and thrust her center hard against Jane's abs. "Fuck, Jane," she moaned as Jane's long fingers wrapped around her breast and squeezed roughly. Maura's head fell back against the wall, her eyes fluttered closed, and her lips parted as she let herself get lost in the sensations bombarding her body.

Maura's entire body twitched when Jane's hand moved to give her other breast equal attention while her tongue drew tantalizing patterns on every inch of Maura's skin that she could reach.

Jane let her hand trail down Maura's body, enjoying the twitches of Maura's muscles in the wake of her touch. She ghosted her fingertips down the outside of Maura's thighs and back up the inside, ghosting over sensitive skin. Maura groaned when Jane skipped where she wanted her most. Her fingers burned across Maura's skin as the moved up her flat stomach to circle hardened nipples.

"Jaannneee," Maura whined as she ground her center against Jane as hard as she could, but she needed more. She needed Jane's fingers between her legs. "Stop teasing."

Jane chuckled as she captured Maura's lips in a bruising kiss. Maura's gasp broke the kiss when Jane's fingers finally made contact with her swollen clit. Jane wasted no time, working Maura up quickly as she circled, tapped, and pressed against her clit.

"Oh, god, Jane," Maura whimpered as Jane drove her higher and higher.

Jane pulled her face away from Maura's molten skin to watch Maura's face as she thrust two fingers deep inside, her thumb never letting up pressure on Maura's clit. Jane's eyes remained glued to Maura. Maura's breasts bounced in time with her thrusts against Jane's hand. Jane's eyes followed the trail of water droplets as they dripped down her cheeks, neck, and breasts, but her favorite view was watching the pleasure evident on Maura's face as she rode Jane's fingers hard.

"More. I need more," Maura gasped out, and she let out a strangled scream when Jane added a third finger, curling hard against that perfect spot inside of her.

"Shit! Damn! Fuck! Jaaaannnnnnneeeee!" Maura's scream bounced off the walls of the bathroom as her body froze. Her orgasm barreled through her like a freight train as her thighs clenched hard around Jane's waist and her fingers dug into Jane's skin.

Jane wished she could stay in this moment forever. Watching Maura come apart in her arms and feeling her pulsing around her fingers was the best thing Jane had ever experienced.

Maura's body went limp, and she had to push Jane's hand away. It felt like every nerve ending in her body was on fire. She whimpered slightly when Jane shifted her body, causing her sensitive clit to brush against Jane, but she let Jane pull her into her arms. Maura's weight was now resting against Jane's chest rather than against the wall of the shower. Maura let her head fall to Jane's shoulder as she recovered. A shiver ran through her body when Jane lightly kissed her shoulder. She wrapped her arms around Jane's shoulders as Jane turned them so that they were under the full flow of the shower.

"I think you're gonna kill me," she mumbled against Jane's shoulder. The rumble of Jane's laughter against her body sent a shot of arousal through Maura, causing Maura to involuntarily tighten her grip around Jane.

When Maura had finally gained some of her energy back, she lifted her head so that she could rest her forehead against Jane's. "That was…" Maura laughed lightly when she couldn't come up with a way to end that sentence.

"Beautiful," Jane finished for her. "You're beautiful when you come." Jane gave Maura a soft kiss on the lips, which Maura eagerly returned despite the blush that had just overtaken her at Jane's words.

"I think I can stand now," Maura said as she let her feet drop back to the shower floor, but she still leaned against Jane, holding her close. Maura reached up and pushed the wet curls off of Jane's face, letting her hand cup Jane's cheek. Jane leaned into the touch. "I want to return the favor, but I'm not sure…"

Jane cut her off with a kiss. "Later," she whispered against Maura's lips.

"Mmmm," Maura hummed. Maura wanted to stay like that, in Jane's arms, forever, but they had already been in the shower for a long time. If they didn't run out of hot water, their skin was definitely water-logged. "Wash my back?" she asked, reaching for the soap.

"Definitely," Jane said with a smile, "and that's a favor I'll let you return now."

Maura rolled her eyes at Jane's cheesiness as she turned to give Jane access to her back. They both quickly finished their showers. Maura's heart swelled with love when Jane held out a towel for her before getting one for herself.

They moved around each other seamlessly as they got ready for lunch, sharing soft kisses and shy smiles each time they passed each other.

Maura: June, Present Day

Jane was ready well before Maura, and she found herself watching the other woman go through her morning routine. It felt so natural to share their space, like they'd been doing it forever.

Maura's smirk when she walked out of the bathroom ready for the day told Jane that she had been caught staring. Maura walked over to where Jane was sitting on the edge of the bed, stepping in between her legs. She rested her hands on Jane's shoulders as she leaned forward to give Jane a kiss. Jane's hands instantly gripped Maura's hips, trying to tug her closer.

Maura giggled and stepped back. "We can't," she said. "We have to go."

Jane pouted but let Maura pull her to her feet anyway.

Fifteen minutes later, they were on their way to lunch. The closer they got to the restaurant, the quieter Maura became. Jane tried to keep the conversation going, but Maura was responding with shorter and shorter answers as she stared out the window. Jane pulled over a few blocks away from the restaurant.

Maura looked around quickly. "What are we doing?" she asked, confused.

"Maura, look at me," Jane said gently, and Maura turned in her seat to make eye-contact with Jane. "I know you're nervous, but it's going to be okay. First of all, I'm going to be with you the whole time, but second, there aren't going to be any surprises. I promise. I wouldn't do that to you again. I thought I was doing the right thing, but I realized I was wrong, and I'm sorry. And maybe most importantly, Cailin doesn't feel the same way as Hope does, okay?"

Maura nodded and reached out to give Jane's hand a gentle squeeze. "I'm okay, Jane," Maura said, "but thank you. And thank you for being here, for coming with me. It helps – a lot."

Jane nodded and smiled before she pulled back onto the road. They drove the rest of the way to the restaurant in silence, but when they were walking into the restaurant, Maura linked her hand with Jane's. Jane flashed her a reassuring smile before pushing open the door. Cailin hadn't arrived yet, so they checked in with the hostess stand. Jane didn't release her grip on Maura's hand until they reached the table when she let go to pull out Maura's chair for her.

Jane gave Maura's shoulder a light squeeze as she walked around her to take the seat next to her. Maura took a deep breath as she placed her napkin on her lap. Jane kept throwing what she hoped were discreet glances over at Maura while she did the same.

"I'm okay, Jane," Maura said with a laugh, causing Jane to blush at being caught.

"Sorry," she said under her breath.

Maura reached for Jane's hand under the table, giving it a gentle squeeze. Jane smiled at her before something behind Maura caught her eye. Maura quickly turned around to follow Jane's line of sight until her eyes landed on her sister. She had forgotten that Jane had told her that Cailin was pregnant, and she hadn't been expecting the baby bump that was only slightly visible under Cailin's flowy shirt.

She remained frozen in place until she felt Jane gently guide her to stand. She watched as Jane and Cailin greeted each other with a friendly hug before Cailin turned her attention to Maura. Maura smiled nervously, unsure of what to say or do, but Cailin ended up making the decision for her.

"Oh my god!" Cailin squealed into Maura's ear as she pulled her in for a tight hug, and Maura had to admit that she didn't sound all that different from her twenty-two-year-old self. "I still can't believe it!" Cailin held Maura at arms-length as though checking that it was really her before pulling her in for another hug. Maura smiled when she felt a soft kick from the baby pressed between them. Cailin chuckled. "I guess he already likes his Aunt Maura," she teased, running a hand over her belly.

"You look amazing," was all Maura could think to say as she looked at her sister.

"Well, thanks," Cailin said with a laugh. "I already feel huge though."

Jane snorted from beside them. "Oh, come on, C. You look great. Do you remember what I looked like when I was about to pop?" she said dramatically.

"Uh uh, neither of you get to complain," Maura said with a laugh. "I carried twins, remember?"

"Touché," Jane said, still laughing. "Let's sit down."

"How have you been feeling?" Maura asked as they took their seats.

"Pretty good," Cailin answered. "Although, I get tired more easily, especially when I work long shifts."

"I know Jane told me, but I can't remember. How far along are you?" Maura asked.

"Twenty-two weeks. I actually finish my residency at the end of the month," Cailin continued. "And I negotiated a start date of January 1st for an attending position with my current department, so at least I won't have to be on the floor during my third trimester. I'm seriously lucky that they need a new attending so badly that they were willing to negotiate."

"Come on, they love you," Jane scoffed. "They'd do just about anything to keep you."

Cailin rolled her eyes with a look so reminiscent of Jane that Maura was starting to wonder how much time they had spent together over the past seven years.

"How did you decide on emergency medicine?" Maura asked, deciding to start with an easy topic.

"Honestly, nothing significant happened that caused me to have some epiphany about what I wanted to specialize in. I guess I just enjoyed my clinical rotation in the ER. I will admit that I like the adrenaline rush."

"Are you sure you're not related to Jane?" Maura teased. "But that's wonderful, Cailin. I'm so happy for you and so proud of you."

A slight blush tinted Cailin's cheeks, but she was saved from having to respond by the arrival of the waiter. After they placed their orders, Maura took a deep breath. "Well, I guess you probably have a lot of questions," Maura said.

Cailin shrugged. "Yeah, but you don't have to tell me anything you don't want to," she said slowly. "I mean, I'm just really happy to see you."

"Thank you," Maura said. "I'm really happy to see you as well. I think I'd like to just get everything out." Maura felt Jane's hand gently squeeze her knee. She placed her hand on top of Jane's and gripped Jane's hand tightly as she continued, telling her story again, just like she had so many times over the past week.

Cailin, for her part, remained quiet, letting Maura say everything she needed to say before asking questions.

"I can't believe I have another niece!" Cailin said excitedly as Maura finished telling her about Sophie.

"I can't believe I'm going to have another nephew," Maura responded with a smile.

"I can't believe I'm gonna have a kid," Cailin added, and Maura could hear the slight fear behind her words.

"You're going to be a wonderful mother," Maura said gently.

Cailin smiled weakly. "Thanks. I'm nervous, but I'm also excited," she admitted.

"You're gonna be great!" Jane assured her. "Seriously, you're great with the girls. You're great with all the kids actually."

"Yeah, but this is different," Cailin acknowledged.

"It is," Jane agreed, "but still, your aunting skills bode well for your parenting skills."

"So, I don't know how much Jane told you," Cailin said to Maura, "but just so you know, I'm not with his father. We're good, though. We already came up with a shared custody agreement. It's kinda complicated because fathers don't get automatic rights in Massachusetts if they're not married to the mother. I'll have primary physical custody from birth through the end of the year; then, starting January 1st we'll split time 50/50. He's a doctor, too. Mom and Jane agreed to help with childcare at least until he's six months old. Then, we'll made a decision about daycare."

"I'm so happy for you, Cailin," Maura said genuinely.

"His name is Oliver," Cailin added as she ran her hand over her bump. "I'm due in mid-October."

"I'm hoping he's born on my birthday," Jane said with a smile, causing both Maura and Cailin to chuckle at her enthusiasm.

"Which she's been saying since she found out I was pregnant," Cailin added. "I'm pretty sure if he doesn't come on her birthday, she's never gonna let him live it down,"

"Nah, I won't hold it against Oliver," Jane teased with a wave of her hand. "I'll just hold it against you."

"Gee, thanks," Cailin joked back, and Maura had to shake her head at them.

The waiter brought their lunches, and they ate in silence for a few minutes.

"So, you had lunch with mom on Wednesday?" Cailin asked.

"Yes," Maura said slowly.

"Wha-oh," Cailin said as comprehension dawned on her face. She glanced nervously at Jane. "I take it, it didn't go well?"

"No," Maura answered.

"I'm sorry," Cailin said quickly. "I shouldn't have asked. I wasn't thinking."

"It's okay," Maura said quietly.

"I've tried to reason with her. I don't feel the same way."

"I told her that," Jane said.

"Can we talk about something else?" Maura asked sadly. She didn't want to talk about Hope anymore, and lunch with Cailin had been going so well so far. She didn't want to ruin that.

"Yeah, sorry," Cailin said.

"No, you're fine," Maura said. "I just…"

"Hey, it's okay," Jane stepped in. "Emma and Finn's graduation was adorable yesterday, by the way," she said to Cailin. "They missed you, but they are super excited to have a super special lunch with their Aunt Cailin."

Cailin laughed. "In all honesty, I'm excited for our super special lunch, too," she admitted with a smile. "And I'm going to make it to a t-ball game by the end of the season."

"Oh, Sophie joined Harper's team," Maura said, happy to be able to add something to the conversation. "She loved it."

"Is she any good?" Cailin asked.

"She runs the right way around the bases, so that's better than like half the kids," Jane quipped.

"Chris still terrible?" said Cailin.

"Yeah," Jane snorted.

"You guys are terrible," Maura said, shaking her head.

"He's so cute, and he's such a great kid. But sports are definitely not his thing. He tries so hard though," Jane said.

"You're going to make him feel bad!" Maura chastised.

"I would never say anything to him," Jane said, sounding offended. "I work with him every week, and all I do is encourage him."

"Jane's great with all the kids," Cailin said. "She's a natural."

"I know," Maura said, and she meant it. "It's just…well, I was that kid. The one who didn't get sports. The one everyone made fun of."

"It's not the same," Jane said kindly. "We all love Chris. It's more like when I tease you…no, wait, that's weird…it's more like when I tease Cailin."

"Now, I feel bad for him," Cailin joked, and Jane responded by giving her a faux punch on the arm.

They continued to talk about the kids, eventually moving through stories about the family more generally. Before they knew it, they realized they had been there for two-and-a-half hours. Jane made sure to leave a very generous tip for the waiter as an apology for hogging his table all afternoon.

"We'll see you Sunday, right?" Jane asked as she gave Cailin a hug while they stood on the sidewalk to say goodbye.

"Yeah, I'll be there," Cailin responded as she turned to give Maura a hug. "Besides, burgers from the Dirty Robber have been my biggest craving throughout this pregnancy. Apparently, Oliver loves bar food."

Maura opened her mouth to tell Cailin the importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy, but Jane stopped her with a soft tug on her elbow.

They were parked in different directions, so Maura and Jane headed off to their car after saying goodbye. Maura instantly threaded her fingers through Jane's, and they walked to the car hand-in-hand. What they didn't notice was that Cailin was watching them with a knowing smirk. She may not know that they were officially together now, but she knew it was inevitable.

A/N: So, the next two chapters are already written (and kinda big storywise). I could probably be convinced to post them sooner rather than later. 😁
