NATURAL SCIENCE—A Ghosts of the Future AU Fanfic
(A bit of warning: This is not a story for the faint of heart. I was deeply inspired by reading Evan Stanley's masterpiece, "Ghosts of the Future" to make this particular story. It can be found in its entirety on her DeviantArt page, should you wish to read it. However, given the severity of the contents within said fan-comic, I felt like I needed to "take the limiters" off to better keep with canon. Therefore, I warn you that if you are turned off by extreme violence and disturbing content that this story is not for you. I have plenty of stories that are safer, trust me. :) Hold on tight folks, it's going to be a bumpy ride...)
Prologue: BIRTH
"Wake up."
A being that was once a mere mote of life persists and grasps for existence, vision coalescing and wavering, as it wrenches itself out of a pool of glowing green liquid. It wrestles for some sort of feeling or memory, yet it knows at the very least that it indeed exists...
Coughing heavily, the matted fur of this creature clings to it's skin, coated entirely with a oily substance akin to some sort of amniotic fluid. Coming to rest on a surface, it curled itself into a ball and shivered as a curious warm rush of air blew over its naked body. Colors are the first to return to mind as she... Yes, she looked over her light brown features which gave way to pitch black around the heels of her paws and hands. Bringing those hands up to her massive ears, she felt up to the poms at their tips.
She was...a female cat of some sort. Looking over her body, the slightly pronounced breasts and the curvature of her body was all she needed to come to that conclusion. Pulling at her skin, she could surmise that she was still quite youthful, as no wrinkles or imperfections could be felt. Lynx was the first thing that popped to mind in regards to her exact species, as the curious liquid slid off her body and pooled itself on the warm metal surface she lay upon.
Her vision finally coalesced, as the walls of the room shifted from an hallucinatory haze to solid plating and alloy plated surfaces, all bathed in emerald glow... Another thought soon followed as she looked upon rows of metal walls and doors leading to unknown passages, all dimly lit by pulsing lights across their sides. Rising to her feet, that thought was given voice at long last as it echoed through the silent chambers...
"Where am I?"
A clawed hand swiped across the air, bringing up a series of holographic displays, as a upbeat tune filled the otherwise pitch black room where this being resided. Backlit green eyes scanned the readouts with a gleeful focus as both hands ran across the screen, zooming a map of the area in on a curious blue dot. It pulsed steadily, moving slightly forward at a sluggish pace. In the glow of the monitor, another lynx's face looked on with bemused curiosity.
"Ah, there you are. Don't go too far... I'll be right there." As it finished its sentence and turned to walk back into the darkness, a mouth housing pronounced white fangs twisted into a anticipatory smile.
