Chapter 3

Maya walked through the narrow corridor feeling quite nervous. She walked through to what looked like quite a spacious waiting room, with comfy looking chairs and a glass table in the centre. Decretive art hung on the walls and a stack of magazines lay in a neat pile on the table. Very modern Maya thought. The reception desk was located towards the back of the room, about 3 meters away from the door with an inscription that said Dr Carina DeLuca.

Maya walked to the reception desk and nervously tapped her fingers on the desk. The man behind smiled before politely enquiring, "Hi I'm Tim, do you have an appointment today,"

"Yeah, my names Maya Bishop I called yesterday, you gave me an appointment for 2pm," she said still tapping away.

"That's perfect, if you will take a seat, I will give you a heads up when Dr DeLuca is ready for you to go in as she's running a bit behind schedule today. Help yourself to a drink, there's water, tea and coffee over in the corner if your thirsty."

She walked over to the water dispenser and poured herself a cup of water before sitting down. Maya took another look around the room. She was the only person beside the receptionist. She didn't want to be here, but it was the only thing she could think of to try and get through what was getting to her. The nightmares, the loneliness. The amount of alcohol she consumes and the reasons for it. She had no stability or feelings. She just felt empty.

Looking up at the clock it had just turned 14:20pm. She should have been in already. But instead she'd sat twiddling her thumbs and nervously tapping her foot on the floor. Maya decided to get up and walk towards the window, which was open just a little, stuck on a latch. Fresh breeze poured through and calmed her a bit more. Thankfully she only wore a polo shirt, dark blue jeans and a light grey hoodie, anything thicker and she would have melted.

"Hey is there no aircon in this building?" she said standing by the window.

"Sorry about that, the maintenance guy has been working on it since this morning." Before he could say anymore the phone rang on his desk. The door to Dr Carina DeLuca's office opened, and a man walked past them and the reception, straight out the exit.

"Yes, I will send her right in," he put the phone down. "Miss you can go through now." Tim said with a smile.

Maya smiled back and then headed to the office door. She knocked and walked in closing it behind her. Turning back round to greet the Doctor she froze.

"Fuck," that's all that Maya managed to get out. Silently still, staring straight in front of her.

"Maya Bishop I presume, nice greeting by the way. Do you always say that when you book appointments with Doctors?" Carina spoke with her proud Italian accent before laughing a little and then stopped. "Please Maya take any seat you want in the room, sorry I'm running late. I was in a bit of an accident last night. So, I didn't get anything organised until this morning. What can I help you with?"

Maya sat on the chair closest to the door just incase she needed to make the big escape. She unzipped her hoodie and placed it neatly beside her, then spoke.

"Sorry about that. I'm not used to this." Pointing back and forth between herself and Carina.

Carina sat down with her notepad and pen, crossing her legs and then smiled.

"It's perfectly natural to not be used to this kind of situation. As a Doctor I have read your file, so I know bits and pieces of information about you. But its yourself mainly that needs to tell me what you want me to hear. And I mean it can be anything. For example, when you walked in, you froze and said fuck. Is there a reason you said that or are you just nervous?" Maya smiled, this woman was funny and beautiful. She didn't count on the Italian accent though, it made her even more attractive to the eye. Not to the fact that she had rescued her out that burning building last night. She thought to herself what would happen if I told her.

"Ok, so if you happen to have read my file, then you would know what happened to me a year ago. And as of right now I'm a lonely ass single woman with a hell of a lot of issues. I really don't get therapists. I don't even know why I made this appointment. And I think I'm going to stand as my back is seriously in pain just now." Maya stood up and breathed deeply putting her left hand on her back trying to massage it a little to lessen the pain.

She had been pacing back and forth for the last 20 minutes, and with everything she was saying out loud; Carina could tell Maya was getting more angrier with herself.

"Maya, we haven't got a lot of time left in your session today, if you want, you can book another appointment with me for tomorrow. If you like?"

Maya stood still, then sat back on the chair, "I get angry almost all the time now. I can't help it. I'm a risk taker, it's how I handle myself and it gets me in seriously bad situations. It's why I thought becoming a PI would benefit me getting back out in the big bad world." Slowly putting her hoodie back on she looked at Carina writing stuff down. Is she doodling and secretly not hearing a word I'm saying? Maya started getting angry again. "How do you do that? How do you deal with strangers coming in with all their issues? Surely you have issues yourself. I mean you said you had an accident last night, then you come in to work this morning and you don't even look like you have been carried out a burning building!"

Carina's head shot up from the notepad. Her face shocked and surprised.

"How did you know that?" Carina stared at Maya, waiting for a response.

Maya gazed straight back, suddenly realising what had just come out of her mouth. Maya headed towards the door, just as she was about to open it, Carina's hand stopped the door blocking her exit.

"I can explain ok, its not how it sounds honestly. I'm not a stalker or anything just to make that clear."

"Just spit it out Maya. How do you know what happened to me last night? Do I have to phone the cops or something?" Carina addressed tapping her fingers on the door she was blocking.

Maya walked away from the door and moved over to the window, with her back facing her she spoke very softly with her shoulders slumped.

"It was me. I carried you out that building last night." Maya slowing turned and came face to face with Carina, before storming out the office.
