Detectives and Decisions

She heard the irritation in his voice when he said. "It's not really for us to judge, is it," when Emily said. "He probably couldn't take the heat."

She'd never heard such a tone before and didn't have to see his face to know he was upset. She broke into the awkward silence with new info from the case. When she did make eye contact after the plane landed, he flicked his eyes away.

Detective LaMontange had intriguing blue eyes, and he flirted with her, which annoyed and pleased her. But they weren't hazel eyes that called out for help.

Yes, but was it enough?

JJ smiled at William LaMontange and said. "I'm flattered, but there's someone else, detective."

"Is there? Are you sure?"

Was she sure?

"Yes," she said.

"Then, goodbye, Agent Jareau."

JJ turned away from the detective and hurried out to the waiting SUV. She climbed inside and found the only seat available next to Spencer.

"Hi," he said.

"You ready to go home," JJ said.

"Yes," Spence said. "Are you?"

"Can't wait."

The old Spence peeked out from the haunted place in his beautiful eyes before shadows clouded over them.

JJ reached over and briefly squeezed his hand. It would take time, but someday the shadows would fade into a terrible memory.

She'd made the right choice.
