It was going to be a long trip home, but Scott and Evi couldn't wait to get back.

Scott told Lou, how her brother was also Evi's half-brother. He was the boy they had been going to be picking up in Denver, and the minute Will spoke about a little sister and their stories, they had made the connection.

"Why do you call him Sir, William? His name is Scott!" Lou informed innocently.

"I am. If you want to call me daddy, I agree," the man informed.

"Already? I don't know. What if in a few days, months or years you are fed up with us and send us away?"

"It won't happen William. We are your official guardians, it's the law, remember?" Scott reminded softly.

"But not for Louise!"

"I also adopted Louise, William. I could easily because she is your real sister and now I am your father. I can't go back and I won't. You're going to have to learn to trust a man in your life, and that will be me."

The child said nothing, thinking.

"Will, how was Lou's father with you? And with Lou?" Evi asked her brother.

"Did you say he beat you? Almost more than at the orphanage?"

"Will, in spite of what you think, all men are not violent. I am not, nor is my father whom you will meet." Scott declared.

Scott also spoke a lot about Samantha and Johnny. Lou was delighted to have an older sister and like a second older brother.

As the children slept, Scott and Evi kissed.

"We haven't been alone for a moment in days my love!" Evi whispered in his ear.

"Patience, we will be home soon."

"What are you thinking of my love? Evi asked.

"I was thinking about how to gain Will's trust."

"He already trusts you Scott. Have you seen how he looks at you with respect and admiration? He doesn't know it yet, that's all."

Scott had heard the boy almost say "daddy" but the child had held back, poor child. What had the men in his young life done to him? In time Scott hoped the child would trust him.

The journey on the train continued without incident.

For a second Evi thought about hiding what had happened from her husband, but she changed her mind. She knew what he was going to do and the children deserved it. So she explained the events.

Scott was furious! And the children were looking at their shoes.

"Eyes on me!" The man scolded.

The two children obeyed, the challenge had already disappeared.

"Daddy's waiting for you, Lou," William said.

Lou, fearlessly, crossed the room to join her new daddy and be punished.
