"Gentlemen, as Fantasia's most trusted men in the coastguard, it is my honor to introduce you to my nominee for Minister of Justice, Judge Claude Frollo," Charles Charming announced to Norrington, Smith and Phoebus in Norrington's office just before the celebration.
"It's an honor to make your acquaintance, sir," Norrington extended his hand.
Pheobus and John Smith followed suit.
"I'm sure you will find that our men here at the coastguard are working hard to protect the shores of Fantasia," Norrington added.
"Good," Frollo sternly responded. "Tell me, Norrington, how is that Sparrow situation?"
Phoebus gulped. His body temperature rose. Whenever Sparrow's name was mentioned, he grew more nervous that he would be found out for helping them smuggle goods. Charming on the other hand, grew angrier at the sound of Sparrow's name. Not only was Sparrow a criminal but he held Charming's most beloved secret as leverage. He hoped that with Frollo in charge of justice, that would help alleviate the situation and make business harder for Sparrow.
"Yes, the bane of Fantasia's existence, Captain Jack Sparrow. Norrington has assured me that he received intel on his operation not too long ago. Is that correct?" Charming interjected.
Norrington paled.
"Yes. Yes I did. And I believe we will get more cooperation from this source that will lead to the downfall of Captain Jack Sparrow."
"Good. It is my most fervent wish as Minister of Justice to see that every last one of those filthy disgusting pirates are brought down. One. By. One."
Frollo's response sent chills through Phoebus. He understood law and order. He made a living protecting and serving. But Jack was only trying to get by like the rest of them. Frollo's ominous tone was unsettling to him and he did not feel right about his nomination.
"Mine too, sir." Norrington responded.
"Well Mr. Frollo and I must be heading to the pier."
"Ah yes. Duty calls for trivial appearances. It was a pleasure to meet you, gentlemen."
The three men of the coastguard nodded in agreement as Frollo followed Charming out of Norrington's office.
"Well that went well. It will be nice working with someone who takes criminals seriously," Norrington said sitting back in his office chair, seemingly pleased beyond measure.
John Smith and Phoebus looked at each other skeptically.
"I'm just going to say it. There is something a little off about Frollo," Smith said.
"Thank you. I thought I was the only one," Phoebus added.
"Nonsense, men. He just takes his job seriously."
"A little too seriously, if you ask me. We should be careful in our dealings with him, James," Smith suggested.
"I think you'll be singing a different tune when we finally catch Sparrow."
"And that's another thing, James. What intel did you supposedly receive and from what source? You told me Angelica didn't reveal anything substantive," Smith asked.
"I'm working on it. I'm working on it."
At the pier, Angelica and Meg were setting up tripods and scouting vantage points to capture today's celebration in pictures. Angelica could actually assist for this celebration because she wasn't performing.
"Do we want any shots from the northern side of the pier or is the lighting best in the center?" Meg asked.
"I think we can each be on either side and have a stationary in the center."
"Perfect. Hopefully this one is a little more thrilling than the last."
"Oh what? You don't like pomp and circumstance for a candidacy announcement."
Meg laughed and rolled her eyes as she began unfolding a tripod.
"So I talked to Aladdin last night," Angelica began knowing that she had to tell someone.
"Really? How'd that go? Are you guys going to get back together?"
"We want to. I really want to. And he told me why he's been avoiding me."
"Let me guess, he felt threatened by Sparrow?"
"Well yes and no. He said he felt that my reaction to learning about Jack and my sister meant I still loved him."
"Well do you?"
"I don't know. But I do know that I'm ready to talk to Esmeralda."
"Praise gods! Except now I owe Jasmine twenty bucks."
"What do you mean?"
"We had a bet at how long the Teach Standoff would last. I bet it would be longer. I know how stubborn you both can be."
She laughed.
"Well thanks for the encouragement, Meg."
"Hey, I knew it would happen eventually, you can give me credit for that."
Angelica rolled her eyes and put a lens on her camera and began walking toward what she had deemed her side of the stage. Guests were already starting to arrive. She saw The Jungle's take seats in the front row. Adelaide Norrington was already there with her butler, Edgar. Phoebus Swann's parents Rodger and Anita had arrived. Adam Beastman had also arrived, escorting his grandmother Marie and cousin Sophie.
As they took their seats, Adam grew paranoid.
He hadn't seen Anya at all this morning. He hadn't spoken to her much since the last event at the pier. She had become a little more elusive and distant. He had assumed that since the Pearl was back in port that she was probably catching up with her friend Will Turner, much to his chagrin. He didn't want his sister consorting with criminals. He hadn't said anything because she had known him for so long but once Charming took office, he was going to have a talk with her about it.
Then out of the corner of his eye he saw Will Turner arrive and take a seat in the crowd with Jane Porter. Not Anya. His temperature rose. Sweat glistened from his brow. If Anya wasn't with Turner, then where was she? He grew worried that some how, some way, Derek Royal had gotten to her. He always made sure she had a tail on her at all times and none of them had reported that she'd been seen with Derek. He scanned the crowd in search of Derek but he only saw his man Rogers in the back of the crowd.
"Adam, dear, what's wrong? You look shaken," Marie asked.
"I just find it odd that Turner is here without Anya. Have you spoken to her today?"
Marie shook her head.
"No. But I'm sure she'll be along shortly. Mrs. Potts says she likes to sleep in on occasion."
Adam nodded.
"Sure, that must be it," Adam responded, temporarily reassured by his grandmother.
But Anya was not sleeping in. She was across the street in Mount Olympus Park having a secret meeting with her other new found brother, Derek and his candidate for mayor, John Rolfe. Another man, Clopin who Anya understood to be Derek's PR man for this campaign also met with them. While the three of them were talking logistics, Anya was so lost in thought about her earlier conversation with Will that she was not paying attention.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Rolfe's voice interjected her daze.
"What? Oh, sorry? Did you say something?" Anya responded.
"John was saying that it was nice to finally meet my sister," Derek said.
Anya smiled.
"Oh. I'm sorry. It's nice to meet you too, Mr. Rolfe."
"Please call me John."
"Now that we've made introductions, when is my cue?" Clopin rudely asked.
"Right. Well after Esmeralda performs, that's when you come in."
"Right on. They will think the show is over, but it's only just begun," Clopin agreed.
"Sorry, where am I during all of this?" Anya asked.
"You'll be sitting with your family. The Beastmans," Derek replied.
"Right. Got it. Thanks for the familial clarification."
"Well, we don't want Adam to get suspicious."
She heard Rolfe laugh.
"Derek, you didn't tell me your sister was so charming."
She looked up and he winked at her. She hated to admit it but she kind of liked it. It intrigued her.
"You're right. I didn't. Now let's go. The celebration is about to start," Derek instructed.
And the celebration was getting underway. In a short amount of time more Fantasians arrived. The pier was jam packed with people. A projector and screen was set up on the pier's stage to show a live footage cam of Kovu in his new habitat at the zoo. Ursula Jungle walked on to the stage to welcome everyone.
"Thank you everyone for coming to the celebration of the arrival of our newest lion, Kovu. He will join Simba's pride in a few days after he's finished his quarantine. We have also brought in new leopards and cheetahs to Pride Rock."
She pointed a remote toward the projector and switched live cams to the cheetah habitat.
"None of this would be possible without the help of our resident zoology researcher, Jane Porter! Thank you, Jane for all your hard work," she said as she gestured toward Jane. The crowd applauded.
"And of course thank you to Eric Shipman of Shipman Shipping for transporting these animals as safely as possible."
The crowd clapped for Eric who sat on the stage behind Ursula.
"And of course thank you to Cassim Abu and his team for ensuring our animals are secure in their new homes at Pride Rock."
She gestured toward Cassim, Aladdin, Flynn and the rest of their men at the back of the crowd.
Angelica made sure to snag a picture of Aladdin's proud face as he stood next to his father.
As Ursula continued in a speech about species survival plans and conservation, Anya scanned the crowd for Adam, Marie and Sophie. She knew that her tardiness would most certainly be noted by Adam, possibly causing suspicion but she didn't care. Derek had a plan and she trusted it. She made a beeline toward them and sat in the empty seat next to Adam.
"Where have you been?" he whispered.
"I overslept and I couldn't get my hair right this morning. Sorry."
He accepted her excuse but definitely with a grain of salt.
"Did I miss anything good?"
"Ursula was just thanking everyone involved."
"Oh good. So I didn't miss Charming's speech."
Adam furrowed his brow.
"I had no idea you were so interested in politics.
"There's a lot of things you don't know about me, Adam."
Her last statement made him wonder but he brushed it off as Ursula began to introduce Charles. He looked so handsome and debonair in a clean white suit. His black hair neatly combed. He strutted on stage with the perfect confidence of a political candidate. Adam was in awe.
"Good afternoon, Fantasia. It is my pleasure to celebrate with you today on the arrival of such beautiful and spectacular animals. But that is not the only reason we have gathered here today. It is my honor and privilege to announce my nomination of someone who I know will be tough on crime. He is exactly what Fantasia needs for the Minister of Justice. Please give a warm round of applause for Fantasia's next Minister of Justice, Judge Claude Frollo."
Frollo walked onto the stage to stand next to Charming. He nodded toward the crowd in gratitude but ultimately looked as if he'd rather be anywhere else. While there was some applause from the audience, there was most certainly trepidation that could be felt through the crowd. Cassim looked at his men in confusion. It was no secret how conservative and pious Judge Claude Frollo was at City Hall. Jack and Dimitri stood in the back of the crowd and looked at each other knowing that this could pose a problem for people like them.
"I thought you'd taken care of this?" Dimitri asked.
"Yes, well, I didn't expect Charming to nominate the likes of him to his cabinet," Jack responded.
The half hearted response from the crowd died down.
"Now," Charming shouted, "It is indeed time for some entertainment. Let us welcome the incomparable, Esmeralda Teach!"
Charming and Frollo walked off to the side of the stage to make room for Esmeralda's performance. Esmeralda entered the stage and she was in her element. Jasmine's late night sewing session had paid off. Her intricate red outfit was perfect as she began to dance for the crowd.
"God, she's gorgeous isn't she?" Dimitri commented to Jack.
He just nodded in response. Suddenly at a loss for words. Jack knew that she would be dancing today but he was not prepared for his reaction to it. As he watched her dance, he found his eyes followed her every move, every fluid motion. Her emerald eyes glowing with every pop of the hip and every step of her feet. He was positively mesmerized. He couldn't tear himself away from the sight of her as if this was the first time he'd seen her dance. Her performance had bewitched him.
His reaction did not go unnoticed.
As Angelica scanned the crowd with her camera during her sister's performance, her vision caught Jack standing in the back of the crowd with Dimitri. His deep brown eyes were entranced in a way that she had never seen before from him. The closer she looked that more she realized that he was not only attracted to Esmeralda but he was enamored with her. Jack never looked at Angelica like that. Even when he was begging for her to take him back, his eyes were never that enchanted by her. Esmeralda had bested her at something yet again.
Overcome with emotion she ran from the crowd toward the Waterhole Shops to get some air. It wasn't until she heard his voice that she realized she had tears streaming down her face.
"Are you okay, Ang?"
She looked up to see Aladdin standing there.
"Yeah. I'm fine."
"No you're not. What's wrong?"
She smiled trying to play it off.
"It's nothing really. It's just I saw Jack watching Esmeralda and before you get any ideas, I'm not upset because I have feelings for him okay?"
"Okay, then why are you crying?"
"Because she's better than me."
"What? No she isn't"
"Yes she is. She's prettier. She's a better dancer. And I saw Jack watching her and realized that he thinks she's better too. Everything I do, she can do better."
"That's not true, Ang. I'm sure she isn't as talented with a camera as you."
Angelica rolled her eyes.
"Okay, one thing."
"Ang, look at me."
He put her hands in his and pulled her closer to him. She missed being this close to him.
"From where I was standing, she pales in comparison to you."
"You're just saying that."
"No. No. I'm not. Why do you think I'm here? When I saw you in the crowd taking pictures, I couldn't take my eyes off you. You were so focused and intent. Then I saw you run off and I got worried."
"Oh, Aladdin. I miss you."
"I miss you too, Ang."
He brought her hands to his lips and kissed them.
"Esmeralda is not better than you, okay. In my eyes...in my eyes you're the most beautiful girl in the room."
The two shared a quiet soft kiss that had been long overdue.
While Aladdin became reacquainted with Angelica, Jack was still mesmerized by Esmeralda's performance. And when he took his eyes off her for one split second when she did a twirl, he noticed that he was not the only one enchanted with the fair Esmeralda. Judge Claude Frollo sat on the sidelines glaring at her performance. His nostrils were flared and he was fixated on her movements. He looked disgusted but intrigued. Something about Frollo's attention on Esmeralda didn't sit well with Jack. He'd seen looks like that before. It bothered him that it bothered him. He was Captain Jack Sparrow. He suddenly felt very protective of Esmeralda. He made a mental note.
As Esmeralda finished, the crowd cheered. She takes a bow and walks off stage. The crowd begins to disperse. Clopin surprises everyone with his appearance following his sister.
"Ladies and gentlemen, don't rush off! The show has only just begun! Please let me introduce Fantasia's newest mayoral candidate, Mr. John Rolfe!"
As John Rolfe confidently strode on to the stage following Clopin's introduction, smiling and waving, the entire crowd audibly gasped in shock.
"This should be interesting," Jack said to Dimitri, smiling wryly at the turn of events.
"Indeed, my friend. Indeed."
